Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the significance of waterfront redevelopment in the post-industrial city. The context for this analysis is the advent of post-industrial society - as evidenced by the economic, social and physical restructuring of cities. My objectives in undertaking this research are to gain a better understanding of planning issues in waterfront redevelopment; to examine the use of waterfront redevelopment as a policy tool for achieving community objectives; and to ascertain the broader implications of waterfront redevelopment in post-industrial society. My research is based on an extensive literature review, several interviews, and more in-depth study of selected waterfront projects. The significance of urban waterfront redevelopment is studied from three different perspectives: (i) the physical restructuring of cities in the post-industrial period; (ii) the experiences of various waterfront communities; and (iii) the case study of New Westminster, British Columbia. Waterfront redevelopment is significant in the post-industrial city as a public policy tool for achieving broader social and economic development objectives. Through the redevelopment of their waterfronts, communities have an opportunity to redress a range of social and economic issues. The social development potential is seldom realized, however, because redevelopment is primarily commercially-motivated. In theory, the urban waterfront has been reclaimed for all residents of the post-industrial city. The notion of public access and the creation of public amenities are fundamental principles of waterfront development. In practice, however, the benefits of a revitalized waterfront are not shared equally. As the waterfront profiles demonstrate, the nature of the waterfront land-use mix is generally biased towards high-end commercial development and luxury housing. The nature and form of new waterfront developments raises questions about elitism and equity in the post-industrial city. If some level of economic integration is not achieved, the waterfront will not have been reclaimed for all residents of the post-industrial city, but, rather - for the post-industrial urban elite.

This research contributes to the field of aerospace engineering by proposing and demonstrating an integrated process for the early-stage, multistate design of aerospace systems. The process takes into early consideration the many partially degraded states that real-world systems experience throughout their operation. Despite advancing efforts aimed at maintaining operation in a state of optimum performance, most systems spend very substantial amounts of time operating in degraded or off-nominal states (e.g. Hubble space telescope, Mars Spirit rover, or aircraft flying under minimum-equipment-list restrictions). There exist relatively few methods and tools to address this at the beginning of the design process. At one end of the spectrum is design optimization, but this typically concentrates on the system in its nominal state of operation, only infrequently considering failure states through piecemeal application of constraints. There is reliability analysis, which focuses on component failure rates and the benefits of redundancy but does not consider how well or poorly the system performs with partial failures. Finally, there is controls theory, where control laws are optimized but the plant is typically assumed to be given a priori. The methodology described within this thesis coordinates elements from each of these three areas into an effective integrated framework. It allows the designer deeper insight into the complex problem of designing cost effective systems that must operate for long durations with little or expensive opportunity for repair or intervention. Specific contributions include: 1) the above methodology, which evaluates responses in system expected performance and availability to changes in static design variables (geometry) and component failure rates, accounting for control design variables (gains) where appropriate, 2) the demonstration of the cost and benefits associated with a multistate design approach as compared to reliability analysis and the nominal design approach, and 3) a multilayer extension of Markov analysis, for translating single sortie vehicle level metrics into measures of multistate campaign performance. The process is demonstrated through three application case studies. The first of these establishes the feasibility of the approach through the multistate analysis of performance for an existing twin-engine aircraft. This analysis was enabled through the development of a multidisciplinary simulation based design model for evaluation of multistate aircraft performance. A medium-altitude long endurance unmanned aerial vehicle is designed in the second case study, first from a single-sortie, ultra long endurance perspective and then from a multiple sortie, mission campaign perspective. Finally, the third case study demonstrates applicability of the approach to a lower level subsystem, that of the lubrication system for a geared turbofan engine. Several major findings result from these case studies, including that: 1) multistate performance output spaces have distinctly unique shapes and boundaries, depending on whether formed through variation of component failure rates, static design variables (geometry), or a multistate combination of both, 2) a region of multistate performance results from the combined variation of failure rates and static design variables that is unachievable through the independent variation of either one, 3) small changes in static design variables may be used to significantly improve system availability, and 4) the general multistate design problem is one of competing objectives between system availability, expected performance, nominal performance, and cost.

The production of fashion garments has negative environmental and social impacts that can potentially be reduced through decisions made in the design process. This research explores to what extent Australian mass-market fashion designers consider environmental sustainability within product design. The study presents three case studies from different market levels, assembled through interviews with designers, along with an analysis of the Australian mass-market fashion industry. The project provides insights into the workings of the fashion design process within mid and high volume companies, and identifies opportunities and barriers for consideration of sustainability.

"The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting." - Sun Tsu from "The Art of War" Believed to have lived between 770 and 476 B.C In the age of code wars, have our lives changed for the better? Are we any safer than the bloody wars or the cold wars from the past? Is there any more guarantee now in a cyber age than in a kinetic age involving human forces? These are the types of questions that have little answers due to the secret nature of the operation. State-sponsored activities are commonplace. Whenever there is involvement by a state, the stakes are higher, and loss of life can never be ruled out. The objective of this thesis was to research historical cyber-warfare incidents from the past to current and map the relevant cyber-warfare data in a well-known framework called CASCON, which is a history-based conflict analysis and decision-support system. The CASCON-based analysis for cyber incidents revealed a larger picture of the world we live in and how easily that world could change. The information contained in this thesis is not meant to be conclusive, but a study of state-sponsored cyber cases using MIT's CASCON to map and categorize information for future learning about conflicts involving states. It is the purpose of this thesis to (a) research historical cyber-warfare incidents and (b) map cyber-warfare incidents into a framework.

The case-control design is one of the most commonly used designs in genome- wide asociation studies. When we increase the sample size of either the controls or, more importantly, the cases, the power of whatever test we use will certainly increase. However increasing the sample size, means that addi- tional individuals need to be genotyped and this implies extra financial costs. However, nowadays with the emergence of genetic studies, a large number of genetic data are available at low or no extra cost. Even though those data may not be completely relevant to the current study, they can still be used to increase the probability to identify true associations. Furthermore, additional information, non-necessarily genetic, can also be used to improve the power of a method. In this thesis we extend the case-control design in order to take ad- vantage of such types of additional data and/or information. We discuss three designs; the case-cohort-control, the kin-cohort and the super-case– case–control–super-control designs. For each of these, we present methods that are adjusted or modified versions of standard case-control methods but we also propose novel ones developed with those extended designs in mind. Ultimately, we describe how those methods can be used in order to increase the power of association tests, especially compared to similar methods of the case-control design.

Design processes and methods for product design are not as effective when products have a systems component. Products can have a systems component when they are within the context of a system, are a component of a system or are systems themselves. A review of relevant design processes and frameworks is followed by three case studies describing the design process of three products, one in each category mentioned above. These are: a solar powered assistance system for handlooms, a biogas generation system based on food waste from the city's waste stream and a virtual assistant and online platform for people with vision impairment in India. Learnings from these projects are used to propose a preliminary framework for designing for products with a systems component. This framework proposes that the design process cannot be codified and must be approached depending on the use case. Research, concept generation, testing and post-product launch should involve research which considers the impacts of the product and system at large and small physical and temporal scales. The framework reframes the design process in terms of the design experience and capabilities of the designer. The designer constantly cycles between understanding the system and creating solutions through different parts of the design process. The thesis defines the broadened role of the designer must be capable of abstract thinking, have subject matter expertise and possess technical and interpersonal skills, enabling them to take on a leadership role. It then suggests that further professionalization of the field of product and systems design is necessary given the rising complexity of socio-technological systems and suggests changes to the education system to cope with this. Lastly, it stresses that creativity and intuition are critical and the design framework sets the ground for creativity to generate great designs.

Housing is a critical national asset that underpins Australians’ economic,social and environmental well-being. On the one hand, a house can be a reflection of personal aspirations, world views, lifestyles and social and economic status, and collectively housing is a reflection of national and regional cultural values and standard of living. On the other hand, housing also significantly impacts economic, social and environmental sustainability at personal, regional, national and international levels. If housing,individually and collectively, is to become ‘sustainable’, we need to be able to define, deliver and evaluate a ‘sustainable house’ as a product, a process and a place to live. Very little is known about a sustainable house as an environmentally sound technology and as an integrated system. Little is known about the perspectives and experiences of end-users and their possible role in the diffusion of this technology into the market. The objective of this research was to investigate the complex nature of sustainable housing in an Australian context through an examination of the experiences of end users who are early adopters of contemporary, sustainable homes in subtropical south-east Queensland. The aim was to evaluate these experiences in relation to consideration of a sustainable house as a complex integrated system comprised of the product and its subsystems, the process of product design and delivery, the performance outcomes of the product, and the impact of the product and processes on the end-users. The results show that, for these end-users, a sustainable house embraces the collective and integrated aspects of environmental protection, resource management and social wellbeing. This product is an expression of personal and social identity and enables and supports its inhabitants in living sustainably. The urban context, regulation and multiple supply chain agents affected both sustainability aspirations and outcomes. The findings of the study reinforce the concept of a sustainable house as an integrated system that is centered on end-user goals and aspirations, specific building elements and subsystems, design and construction processes and practices, and the urban context. These interactions take place within the context of multiple supply chain agents. The performance outcomes of this integrated product are reliant on not only an integrated systems approach, but also on good communication and robust decision making processes between and amongst the multiple supply chain agents. These research findings have implications for the development and refinement of regulatory instruments and for strategies and measures currently used in the housing market. This study makes a substantial contribution to the field by providing new knowledge in relation to family experiences of the design and construction processes that resulted in the completion of their sustainable homes; their practices in the occupation of these homes; and the post-construction environmental performance of these homes. This new knowledge adds clarity with respect to how end-users define and value a sustainable house, and quantifies to some extent the impact that a sustainable house has on family economic, social and environmental sustainability. The current study modifies the conceptual framework for sustainability in the construction industry (Sev, 2008) by developing and applying a framework for defining and evaluating a sustainable house. Innovation diffusion theory is applied to a sustainable house as an integrated system and as an environmentally sound technology, utilizing the experiences of early adopter families to identify and evaluate market diffusion barriers. Building on existing knowledge about barriers to the diffusion of environmental technologies, this study provides clear characterization of the barriers early-adopter families face in seeking sustainable homes in the form of a Taxonomy of barriers to a sustainable house. The taxonomy provides insight into ways in which these barriers might be addressed by research, regulation and the market to enable more rapid diffusion of sustainable housing as a positive response to environmental, social and economic challenges.

Programs are not only a tool for the simplification or automation of everyday tasks; they also represent a significant time and money investment. A program's life may span years, or even decades, which creates certain risks for the stakeholders involved. To mitigate the risks associated with these legacy systems, software renovation can be undertaken. Software renovation can be described as a series of processes and/or tools used to modernize a legacy system, thereby preserving and maintaining the investment it represents while decreasing the risks associated with it. In this thesis, the focus is on renovation of software created by in-house development. A series of case studies will be examined to demonstrate basic renovation strategies, including the formation of goals for a renovation and exploring trade-offs between robustness, performance, and usability.

Nella nostra società il tema della sostenibilità dei prodotti e servizi è diventato sempre più rilevante. Conseguentemente le pubblicazioni scientifiche riguardo al sustainable design sono aumentate e con queste sono comparse anche diverse metodologie che cercano di fornire gli step e le fasi necessari per ottenere soluzioni sostenibili. Nel tempo il focus di queste metodologie si è spostato dal semplice realizzare prodotti con minori impatti ambientali al considerare innovazioni di livello socio-tecnologico. Nella review della letteratura proposta vengono identificate le caratteristiche principali che dovrebbe avere una metodologia per il design sostenibile secondo lo stato d’arte. In seguito viene presentato il PT, innovativa metodologia sviluppata dal Future Food Institute a partire dal 2019. I principali concetti su cui si basa vengono descritti e viene spiegato il processo che lo identifica composto dalle seguenti fasi: 1) Problem Framing 2) Ideation and Prototyping 3) Test & Analyze. La struttura del processo viene validata attraverso una comparazione del PT con il design thinking e con le metodologie sostenibili individuate tramite la review. In seguito viene trattato lo sviluppo del PT toolkit e viene presentata la sua versione finale ottenuta grazie ad una validazione esterna con esperti di design. A seguire un caso studio nato dalla collaborazione tra FFI e Ab-InBev. Il progetto si collega ai principi dell’economia circolare ed in particolare al tema dell’upcycling per un prodotto di scarto derivante dalla produzione della birra con lo scopo di utilizzarlo per realizzare prodotti alimentari nutrienti e sani. Una comparazione tra il toolkit e gli strumenti utilizzati nel case study viene presentata al fine di individuare gli step per la ricerca futura. Infine, una riflessione su come il ruolo del designer dovrebbe evolversi per diventare un facilitatore che guidi le innovazioni del presente verso un futuro più prospero viene proposta.

Jewelry designers might not be as customer-centered as Kotler recommend. Additionally, they are not constantly seeking to grow and make the most profit out of satisfying consumer needs better than competitors. However, it is imperative even for an individual designer to examine what the customers want and demand as well as think of a plan to satisfy this demand. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to create a guideline for a marketing plan for a beginning jewelry designers using jewelry designer Anniina Dunder as an example. A qualitative method was chosen for this study in form of interviews and observation. Moreover, secondary data was collected in order to gain a wider and clearer picture of the subject.

Based on this study an individual actor has every possibility to reach the desired level of profit in the jewelry market in Helsinki by designing and producing jewelry. Reaching this level of profit requires activeness, customer-centered view and productivity from the designer. Consequently, individual designers should start paying more attention to potential customers’ needs and wants even when designing collection jewelry and be constantly aware of changes in these wants in order to satisfy customers even in the future.

Abstract:
In today's highly competitive landscape, new product development strategies are imperatives for companies to create and sustain competitive advantages. The objective of this research is to develop an integrated approach to automate, or aid, the design problem solving process. An Integrated Design System (IDS) is proposed focusing on the parametric and detail design. In this system, generation and evaluation of new design problems occur quickly and easily by changing the inputs for the design model. The IDS provides an integrated platform to incorporate available application programs such as CAD and FEM tools into a single system. Four major frameworks, namely information handling, problem decomposition, design space characterization, and problem solving, are proposed and embedded in it to implement the product development process. The information handling includes five aspects. A naming protocol is devised to organize the historical design cases. A search algorithm is proposed to retrieve a design case. A system-generated report is used to distribute the design information. A constraint definition frame is presented to define the relationships between design parameters. Two schemas, information matrix and constraint tree, are developed to represent information in the IDS. A diagonal-centered decomposition scheme is developed utilizing a Genetic Algorithm to decompose a complex design problem. In addition to the conventional genetic operators, two novel genetic operators, unequal position crossover and insertion mutation, are proposed. To characterize the design space, two methods, Incremental Response Method (IRM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN), are presented. The IRM is derived from response surface method, while the back-propagated ANN is coded to be self-evaluated. The presented problem solving algorithm constitutes the solving mechanism of the IDS. Based on the assessment of the design objectives, all design parameters are given a priority index to facilitate the parameter selection. An independent recursive method is introduced in this algorithm to handle the design constraints. The case studies are performed on two design problems: a hard disk drive actuator arm and a shaft. The results show that the system can automatically align parameter values towards the objective values in a reasonable manner, and thus verify the feasibility of the embedded frameworks.

Abstract:
In the present thesis, the application of fracture mechanics in design and assessment of steel structures has been studied.The first case study concerns a ring-flange connection used in wind turbine towers. The flange is rolled from straight steel profile into a complete ring. Subsequently, at the ends of the ring are welded by way of electron beam welding. This weld providing the integrity of the ring-flange was designed against fracture. To avoid potential failure by fracture and/or fatigue, the fracture mechanics approach for engineering assessments (as described in the Swedish handbook for safety assessment of structures containing defects) was implemented to predict the maximum allowable crack size. Material properties along with the design stress and crack size are the three variables that must be taken in account in order to design a structure against fracture. To this end, toughness and mechanical properties of the weld metal were experimentally determined. The results confirmed that the material behaves in a ductile manner and the electron beam welding has a positive effect on material properties. The fatigue performance of the flange was examined using the fatigue load histogram experienced by the flange in its 20years lifetime. Detailed finite element analyses of the flange connection were conducted to determine stress distribution at the most critical location along a hypothetical crack plane. The stresses obtained from the finite element analysis were used to assess the fracture stability of the flange. The fracture and fatigue assessment results confirmed that the flange in question is susceptible to fatigue failure which turns out to be the governing criterion in order to define the maximum allowable crack size. Furthermore, a parametric study was carried out to investigate the effect of parameters such as crack eccentricity, material properties and crack geometry on the integrity of the flange connection.The second case concerned the maintenance problem of roller bearings of relatively old bridges. These tend to rupture and no satisfactory explanation exists in the literature. Two broken specimens were supplied by the Swedish Transportation Authority (Trafikverket). These were first subjected to fractographic examination to determine the crack initiation location. Afterward, Charpy, compact tension, tensile and chemical composition specimens were machined out of the broken roller pieces and the respective tests were conducted. The results showed a very brittle material but no deviations from the prescribed material properties that were set forth in the 1967 certificate of application (Zulassung) of the rollers in question. To explain the observed failures a mechanical over-stressing condition was sought. Two such over-stressing sources were investigated. First the Hertz contact solution traditionally used in the design of roller bearings (both DIN 4141 and EN 1337-4) is valid for an infinite length cylinder. At the edges of the roller contact zone, stress singularities of the sort appearing in the case of a rectangular rigid body indenting an elastic half-space are likely to appear: three-dimensional finite element analyses were conducted and a 30% edge stress increase was established. As a second source of over-stressing the imperfections of welded I-beams according to EN 1090-2 were introduced into the FE model including, as before, the girder end, the roller assembly and the abutment. A wedge-type imperfection between the lower flange of the bridge girder and the lower support plate of the roller can create detrimental stress concentrations even at values no higher than 50% of the EN 1090 limits. Finally, the effect of the contact stresses in the roller was examined with a linear elastic fracture mechanics approach. It was found that surface cracks at the roller edge may become unstable in Mode-II when traversing the limits of the contact zone as this is the area of maximum shear stress: daily thermal cycles cause such cracks to go through a full plastic cycle as they are forced to swing past both edges of the contact area of the roller. This causes plastic strain accumulation at the crack tip of even small stable cracks: this mechanism causes them to grow until they become critical. A fracture assessment diagram for one of the broken rollers was computed.

A gap exists between the fields of visual rhetoric and newspaper graphic design caused by three factors: the historic division between words as communication tools and design as artistic effect, the relative youth of visual rhetoric, and the recent evolution of newspaper design as a visual language. This thesis establishes one bridge between visual rhetoric and newspaper graphic design by defining the rhetorical function of newspaper graphic design. Using case study methodology, this report focuses on the rhetorical role of newspaper design in an attempt to further understand how people extract meaning from the newspapers they read. By engaging readers with various newspaper pages and requiring them to comment on their direct interaction with the content, this research illuminates the role of newspapers' visual elements by exploring the following questions: What role do visual elements (i.e. pictures, graphics, color) play in a newspaper reader's meaning making processes? How do page layout and the presentation of story packages affect a reader's understanding and opinions of the information at hand?

School leaders often contemplate implementing measures that will increase community and parent involvement in schools. There is a shortage of research that concisely takes school leadership through a process that details how to integrate parent and community input in a school transformation initiative and careful analysis of student outcomes. Within this study, I provide an in-depth look at one school district’s efforts to engage its community through strategic planning and mission and vision redesign. This process includes community involvement at every phase. For the purpose of this study, community refers to both community members who do not have children in the school system and parents of current students. In this study, I outline the inception of the transformation effort, the ongoing efforts to include community input in decision-making and campus implementation, and finally a review of the overarching impact on leadership, staff, students and community. Data collection analyzed in this study include assessment data, survey data, discipline data and walk through data collected by the school district.

Distribution system analysis and design has experienced a gradual development over the past three decades. The once loosely assembled and largely ad hoc procedures have been progressing toward being well-organized. The increasing power of computers now allows for managing the large volumes of data and other obstacles inherent to distribution system studies. A variety of sophisticated optimization methods, which were impossible to conduct in the past, have been developed and successfully applied to distribution systems. Among the many procedures that deal with making decisions about the state and better operation of a distribution system, two decision support procedures will be addressed in this study: phase balancing and phase prediction. The former recommends re-phasing of single- and double-phase laterals in a radial distribution system in order to improve circuit loss while also maintaining/improving imbalances at various balance point locations. Phase balancing calculations are based on circuit loss information and current magnitudes that are calculated from a power flow solution. The phase balancing algorithm is designed to handle time-varying loads when evaluating phase moves that will result in improved circuit losses over all load points. Applied to radial distribution systems, the phase prediction algorithm attempts to predict the phases of single- and/or double phase laterals that have no phasing information previously recorded by the electric utility. In such an attempt, it uses available customer data and kW/kVar measurements taken at various locations in the system. It is shown that phase balancing is a special case of phase prediction. Building on the phase balancing and phase prediction design studies, this work introduces the concept of integrated design, an approach for coordinating the effects of various design calculations. Integrated design considers using results of multiple design applications rather than employing a single application for a distribution system in need of improvement relative to some system aspect. Also presented is a software architecture supporting integrated design.

The future electricity grid is likely to be increasingly complex and uncertain due to the introduction of new technologies in the grid, the increased use of control and communication infrastructure, and the uncertain political climate. In recent years, the transactive energy market framework has emerged as the key framework for future electricity market design in the electricity grid. However, most of the work done in this area has focused on developing retail level transactive energy markets. There seems to be an underlying assumption that wholesale electricity markets are ready to support any retail market design. In this dissertation, we focus on designing wholesale electricity markets that can better support transactive retail market. On the highest level, this dissertation contributes towards developing tools and models for future electricity market designs. A particular focus is placed on the relationship between wholesale markets and investment planning. Part I of this dissertation uses relatively simple models and case studies to evaluate key impediments to flexible transmission operation. In doing so, we identify several potential areas of concern in wholesale market designs: 1. There is a lack of consideration of demand flexibility both in the long-run and in the short-run 2. There is a disconnect between operational practices and investment planning 3. There is a need to rethink forward markets to better manage resource adequacy under long-term uncertainties 4. There is a need for more robust modeling tools for wholesale market design In Part II and Part III of this dissertation, we make use of mathematical decomposition and agent-based simulations to tackle these concerns. Part II of this dissertation uses Benders Decomposition and Lagrangian Decomposition to spatially and temporally decompose a power system and operation problem with active participation of flexible loads. In doing so, we are able to not only improve the computational efficiency of the problem, but also gain various insights on market structure and pricing. In particular, the decomposition suggests the need for a coordinated investment market and forward energy market to bridge the disconnect between operational practices and investment planning. Part III of this dissertation combines agent-based modeling with state-machine based modeling to test various spot, forward, and investment market designs, including the coordinated investment market and forward energy market proposed in Part II of this dissertation. In addition, we test a forward energy market design where 75% of load is required to be purchased in a 2-year-ahead forward market and various transmission cost recovery strategies. We demonstrate how the different market designs result in different investment decisions, winners, and losers. The market insights lead to further policy recommendations and open questions. Overall, this dissertation takes initial steps towards demonstrating how mathematical decomposition and agent-based simulations can be used as part of a larger market design toolbox to gain insights into different market designs and rules for the future electricity grid. In addition, this dissertation identifies market design ideas for further studies, particularly in the design of forward markets and investment cost recovery mechanisms.

Abstract:
Large-scale genetic association studies are carried out with the hope of discovering single nucleotide polymorphisms involved in the etiology of complex diseases. We propose a coalescent-based model for association mapping which potentially increases the power to detect disease-susceptibility variants in genetic association studies with case-control and cohort design. The approach uses Bayesian partition modelling to cluster haplotypes with similar disease risks by exploiting evolutionary information. We focus on candidate gene regions and we split the chromosomal region of interest into sub-regions or windows of high linkage disequilibrium (LD) therein assuming a perfect phylogeny. The haplotype space is then partitioned into disjoint clusters within which the phenotype-haplotype association is assumed to be the same. The novelty of our approach consists in the fact that the distance used for clustering haplotypes has an evolutionary interpretation, as haplotypes are clustered according to the time to their most recent common mutation. Our approach is fully Bayesian and we develop Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithms to sample efficiently over the space of possible partitions. We have also developed a Bayesian survival regression model for high-dimension and small sample size settings. We provide a Bayesian variable selection procedure and shrinkage tool by imposing shrinkage priors on the regression coefficients. We have developed a computationally efficient optimization algorithm to explore the posterior surface and find the maximum a posteriori estimates of the regression coefficients. We compare the performance of the proposed methods in simulation studies and using real datasets to both single-marker analyses and recently proposed multi-marker methods and show that our methods perform similarly in localizing the causal allele while yielding lower false positive rates. Moreover, our methods offer computational advantages over other multi-marker approaches.

Understandings of, and objectives for, Interaction Design have been extended over the last few decades. Firstly, a single user-centred focus for Interaction Design is no longer regarded as adequate where any single central focus for design is now questioned. Post-centric approaches such as Balanced, Integrated and Generous (BIG) Design propose to achieve a broadened worth-focused content scope for Interaction Design, where worth is the balance of increasing benefits over reducing costs and generosity of choice. Secondly, there has been a broadened scope for disciplinary values in Human-Computer Interaction research, with the initial engineering and human science values of User-Centred Design and Human-Computer Interaction now complemented by the rapidly maturing creative field of Research through Design (RtD). Thirdly, RtD as a form of creative reflective practice does not have a sequential process, but needs parallel activities that can achieve total iteration potential (i.e., no restrictions on iteration sequences). Structured reflective tools such as the Working to Choose Framework may reveal this potential. An important opportunity remained that a complete challenging case study that integrated these domains (worth-focus) and tools (RtD, structured reflection) was carried out. The case study addressed the challenging social issues associated with supporting care circles of individuals with disabilities. It is original in completely tracking the combination of RtD with worth-focused Interaction Design, supported by established user-centred practices. The resulting research has made contributions through the tracking of the RtD process to: worth-focused design and evaluation resources; structured reflection; demonstration of innovative parallel balanced and integrated forms of iteration; and to future social innovation for disability support.

This thesis represents an instance of my engagement as a reflective practitioner to explore how access opportunities into a web design Discourse can be enhanced. The study is located in the Multimedia Skills subject which is part of the Certificate in Multimedia Technology at Cape Peninsula University of Technology. In describing student entry into a web design environment, insights into academic literacy practices within the multimedia and web design environment are provided. The theoretical concepts of Discourse, interest, intertextuality, literacy, acquisition and learning are used to ground the conceptual framework of the study, while an interpretative case study is utilized as research methodology. Using the notion of recontextualisation, how the professional Discourse of web design was appropriate into the curriculum of the Multimedia Skills subject and the Multimedia Technology programme is described. This analysis identifies a core identity distinction between web designers (who have a strong visual focus) and web developers (who foreground technical competencies) which is supported by the subject focus in the programme. The research considers two key data sources, personal websites and semi-structured interviews. These account for student performances in and meta-knowledge of the web design Discourse and reveal evidence of how Discourses were reflected in student design decision-making in their personal websites. The differential experiences of student access to the web design Discourse prompt the consideration of how learning and acquisition activities could be used in the classroom to facilitate more balanced performance and meta-knowledge expression.

Increases in the volume of data and the availability of compute power have driven a number of advancements in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and AI technologies and applications are getting a flood of publicity in the media. While four in five executives agree that AI is a strategic opportunity for their organization, only about one in five has incorporated AI in some offerings or processes, and only one in 20 has extensively incorporated AI in their offerings or processes. There is a gap between expectation and action, and we are still in the early days of enterprise AI adoption. This thesis explores the path enterprises need to take to close this gap and to build an enterprise AI capability, thereby realizing the full value of this disruptive technology. Through a literature review it proposes a seven component holistic framework that can guide enterprises through this journey. The framework is more 'wide than deep', and it is supplemented with five case studies that take deep dives into the real life journeys of enterprises from different industries. These stories provide a vivid illustration of best practices and challenges. The case studies cover Danske Bank fighting financial fraud with deep learning, Deutsche Telekom improving customer service with an intelligent digital assistant, General Electric deploying machine learning applications for monitoring workflows in the Industrial Internet of Things, General Mills automating insights for marketers, and Kaiser Permanente using state of the art Natural Language Processing techniques on unstructured triage notes to improve patient flow forecasting. Learnings from the case studies are synthesized into recommendations to aid practitioners on the road to enterprise Artificial Intelligence.

Firms compete based on their relative ability to renew as much as they do on their ability to extract profits from product-markets. Drawing from literature and case studies the research explores how renewal is affected in organisations. The main dynamics of the renewal process, and the issues and skills involved in its management, therefore, receive detailed treatment. Relevant data is gathered from a variety of primary and secondary sources. The research begins with an effort to understand the forces that trigger and processes that act to sustain decline in organisations. These findings are contrasted with a number of case studies that serve the identification of underlying characteristics and dynamics common to successful organizations. This comparison serves to uncover principles of successful organisation and that hold the key to renewal and sustained growth. The main objective of this research is to increase the understanding and awareness of the processes, problems and successful means of organisational renewal. Underlying is the concern to develop more formalised models and translate these findings into a useful conceptual framework as a basis and stimulus for further research and as a helpful guideline for management practitioners to handle successfully the problems of entropy and organisational ossification of their business.

This research investigates the role of design as a ‘functional leader’1 in multinational organisations, to drive innovation successfully at a strategic level. It involved a detailed case study of the innovation process, and practices within Philips Design, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, where design is a key function within the company but not yet recognised as a leading strategic discipline. Philips Design wanted design research to build an integrated map of its actual practices and correlate these with other corporate innovation practices, to help establish strategic recognition for their value. The doctoral challenge was to explicate the process and determine whether the findings have generic capacity to support the role of design as a leading functional discipline. The investigation integrates an iterative loop of; abductive reasoning of design thinking and inductive reasoning of management thinking in an action research cycle. The case study was an empirical enquiry, where the researcher became a ‘participatory observer’ at Philips Design, conducting one-on-one interviews for data collection and refining their analysis using a Delphi Technique. The contribution to knowledge has been generated by combining these research methods to represent data in a logical manner using visual mapping techniques to produce an explicitly defined ‘design innovation process map’ for Philips Design. Comparison with three other multinational organisations explored how each perceives the contribution of design and the different roles it plays in their organisation. Triangulation with a third party expert was also used to validate the findings. The correlation of the research with literature in the field explored the relationship between human behaviour, organisational culture and business innovation cycles and took this an incremental step forward by visually illustrating the conceptual relationship between different theories. The focus became understanding the reasons for the differences between the thinkers and the practitioners in a design team. Significantly, this led to it validating the theory of ‘Design Driven Innovation’ by Roberto Verganti (2009). The study contributes value to his theory of innovation by highlighting four gaps in its application in multinational organisations and demonstrates that design can share the role of innovation leadership with other important functions only if it has an explicit process that aligns with organisational brand values and communicates the value generated by design effectively to the wider team. Therefore, whilst the research has not been able to confirm whether design can lead an effective innovation process at a strategic level, rather it needs to share this role in multinational organisations, it has identified the major reason for this as the differences between design team thinkers trying to find viable options for the future and practitioners trying to defend the core business in their organisation, resulting in a gap between strategy and operation. The research has confirmed the conditions for design to act as a leading functional discipline and provided design practitioners with tools that can help in strategic decision-making. It is hoped this research will inspire design researchers to carry out further study on the topic to improve and develop knowledge and competency to support the strategic role of design as a leading functional discipline in organisations. Also, that business, strategy and marketing researchers will be inspired to generate theories that could link the strategic role of the design innovation process to strategies in their own fields. Finally, the research identifies the need for quantitative research to explain the qualitative conceptual relationships it has depicted between designer behaviour and organisational culture in the different innovation cycles that exist in multinational organisations.
