Abstract:
A multistage and generalised flotation model, suggested more than 30 years ago by the author, is considered in a wide aspect for the first time in world literature for reader’s attention in monography. The possibilities of its usage are shown in different directions of water flotation purification, sediment thickening and enrichment of minerals. We have shed a light widely on matters concerning new flotation equipment as flotation harvesters of KBS type and for special purposes, which are developed on the basis of flotation process multistage and generalized models. Perspectives and intensification ways of water purification flotation processes are pointed out. It is suggested for a wide range of readers, including researches, Higher education teachers, PhD students, Masters and Bachelors, Graduate students.

Eimanis, Mārcis. Usage of Double-Helical Propulsion Principle in Underwater Vehicles. RTU Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.7250/9789934227370.

Full text
Abstract:
The Thesis describes a new underwater vehicle propulsion type developed by the author. Flow and vehicle interaction dynamics are studied, and factors impacting the flow, control methods and the ability to move in other media (in addition to fluid) are reviewed. A geometry of the propulsion system was created by studying its hydrodynamic properties using special CFD software. A mathematical model for the control system was created. The dynamics of the underwater vehicle were modelled with the multibody dynamics modelling software MSC Adams, using the developed control system and the water resistance model developed with CFD software. Flow dynamics were combined with multibody mechanism dynamics using the metamodeling and numerical experiment approach. Numerical experiments in bulk or granular media were performed using the discrete element method, simulating the vehicle movement using the EDEM software. Within the framework of the Thesis, a prototype of the model was also created for observing the model behaviour in real-life conditions. High-quality and good fit results were obtained from the mathematical model and the physical prototype dynamics, proving the performance of both the new propulsion principle and the control system.

Garipzanov, Ildar. The Origins of Early Christian Graphic Signs. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198815013.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
The first two sections delineate the early history of the nomina sacra, staurogram, and chi-rho, from the late first to third centuries AD as well as relevant early Christian discourse on the symbolic meanings of certain letters and graphic signs, and show how the staurogram and chi-rho developed from utilitarian abbreviation signs into symbolic visual proxies for God and Christological concepts. The next two sections provide an overview of the use of graphic signs as protective seals among various religious communities, with reference to artefacts such as the Bruce Codex and votive leaves from Water Newton, and compare the early usage of more acceptable Christian signs with the concurrent culture of the so-called ‘magical’ characteres. The final section underscores that the early development of Christian graphicacy should be seen in the context of a general predilection for apotropaic graphic devices in the Imperial period, and in late antiquity in particular.

Rainville, Pierre. A signature of pain in the brain. Edited by Paul Farquhar-Smith, Pierre Beaulieu, and Sian Jagger. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198834359.003.0029.

Full text
Abstract:
The discovery of pain biomarkers has profound implications for both pharmacology and neurobiology; in 2013, in the landmark paper discussed in this chapter, Wager et al. presented a neurologic signature of pain based on human brain imaging performed in healthy individuals administered experimental heat-pain stimuli. Using advanced analytic methods based on machine learning and multivariate pattern analysis, Wagner et al. provide very convincing support for the idea that pain is encoded in a distinctive pattern of brain activity in one or several brain areas typically referred to as the ‘pain matrix’, which acts as a saliency detection system for the body. Although the usage of such tool to infer pain in patients poses major challenges and is clearly not indicated in medico-legal contexts, the study provides experimental proof of concept in favour of a pattern theory of pain as well as for a specificity theory of pain.

Johnson, Galen A., Mauro Carbone, and Emmanuel de Saint Aubert. Merleau-Ponty's Poetic of the World. Fordham University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5422/fordham/9780823288137.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Merleau-Ponty’s Poetics of the World offers detailed studies of the philosopher’s engagements with Proust, Claudel, Claude Simon, André Breton, Mallarmé, Francis Ponge, and more. From Proust, Merleau-Ponty developed his conception of “sensible ideas,” from Claudel, his conjoining of birth and knowledge as “co-naissance,” from Valéry came “implex” or the “animal of words” and the “chiasma of two destinies.” Thus also arise the questions of expression, metaphor, and truth and the meaning of a Merleau-Pontyan poetics. The poetic of Merleau-Ponty is, inseparably, a poetic of the flesh, a poetic of mystery, and a poetic of the visible in its relation to the invisible. This poetics is worked out across each co-author’s chapters in dialogue with Husserl, Walter Benjamin, Heidegger, and Sartre. A new optic proposes the conception of literature as a visual “apparatus” in relation to cinema and screens. Recent transcriptions of Merleau-Ponty’s first two 1953 courses at the Collège de France The Sensible World and the World of Expression and Research on the Literary Usage of Language, as well as the course of 1953–54, The Problem of Speech, lend timeliness, urgency and energy to this project. Our goal is to specify more precisely the delicate nature and properly philosophical function of literary works in Merleau-Ponty’s thought as the literary writer becomes a partner of the phenomenologist. Ultimately, theoretical figures that appear at the threshold between philosophy and literature enable the possibility of a new ontology. What is at stake is the very meaning of philosophy itself and its mode of expression.
