Abstract:
One hundred ninety-seven patients who underwent surgical repair for a presumed unilateral perilymphatic fistula were reviewed. Of those patients, 87% with vestibular symptoms reported complete or near-complete relief of their symptoms. Forty percent of the patients with sudden hearing loss had an improvement in their hearing levels. An analysis of several diagnostic tests revealed their sensitivity and specificity ratings. A review of the patients' operative records showed a marked disparity between the visual identification of an actual fluid leak during surgery and their postoperative outcome. This review supports the premise that at the present time, the patient's surgical outcome is the best way of documenting a successfully repaired perilymphatic fistula.

Abstract:
In 2004, city leaders in Washington, DC approved the construction of Nationals Park, in order to encourage Major League Baseball to relocate the Montreal Expos to the city. With public funding of the stadium exceeding $611 million, this became the most generous stadium subsidy in the United States at that time (Sports Facilities Reports, 2008). In this revealing action, city leaders clearly demonstrated their priorities by funding a project that primarily benefits visitors and corporate interests over the pressing needs of the city’s residents. Nationals Park is, thus, a spectacle, which, in David Harvey’s (2001b) terms helps to mask Washington’s ‘rot beneath the glitter’ (p. 140). Furthermore, and given the idiosyncratic political governance operating within Washington DC, this article utilizes a combination of Debordian and Lefebvrean theorizing in identifying and examining Nationals Park as a sporting edifice whose symbolic and aesthetic presence is rooted in the city’s pseudo-democratic aura, but whose socio-structural derivation and effects actively perpetuate Washington’s constitutional disenfranchisement and the locally iniquitous status quo.

Abstract:
This paper investigates several views along the George Washington Memorial Parkway, which runs along the Potomac River between Washington, DC, and George Washington’s home, Mount Vernon. It focuses on the role these views have had in transforming the banks of the Potomac into a landscape, and it compares them to a set of landscape paintings that reveal complexities in the ideology of landscape. These dimensions of landscape ideology are used to interpret the parkway as a landscape, a projection of certain values on the land. The paper concludes with a discussion of the values of this approach for the stewardship of visual resources.

Abstract:
The local political implication of Black maternal mortality raises questions about the extent to which city leaders, especially Black females, can influence policies to improve outcomes for Black expectant mothers. The case of Mayor Muriel Bowser, the second Black female mayor of Washington, DC, is examined to demonstrate the connection between intersectional identities and substantive representation through an examination of how she has attempted to reduce Black maternal mortality in the district. Data including press releases from her office, newsletters, accountability reports, and budget proposals are assessed. Other data including news reports from nonprofit organizations as well as local media are examined to provide a comprehensive understanding of how stakeholders in the community have reacted to actions taken by the Bowser administration. Currently serving her second term as mayor, Bowser has pursued actions that attempted to reduce this racial health disparity. Solutions pursued by Mayor Bowser have ranged from symbolic proclamations to substantive legislation as well as programs created through executive agencies as part of her administration. It is also worth noting that some of her actions appear to be in response to legislation approved by the city council. Bowser’s racial/ethnic, gender, and partisan identities strongly align with the actions she and her administration have taken to address Black maternal mortality in Washington, DC.

Abstract:
AbstractObjectiveThe Balanced Menus Challenge (BMC) is a national effort to bring the healthiest, most sustainably produced meat available into health-care settings to preserve antibiotic effectiveness and promote good nutrition. The present study evaluated the outcomes of the BMC in the Maryland/Washington, DC region.DesignThe BMC is a cost-effective programme whereby participating hospitals reduce meat purchases by 20 % of their budget, then invest the savings into purchasing sustainably produced meat. A mixed-methods retrospective assessment was conducted to assess (i) utilization of the BMC ‘implementation toolkit’ and (ii) achievement of the 20 % reduction in meat purchases. Previous survey data were reviewed and semi-structured interviews were conducted.SettingHospitals located in the Maryland/Washington, DC region, USA, that adopted the BMC.SubjectsTwelve hospitals signed the BMC in the Maryland/Washington, DC region and six were available for interview.ResultsThree hospitals in the Maryland/Washington, DC region that signed the BMC tracked their progress and two achieved a reduction in meat procurement by ≥20 %. One hospital demonstrated that the final outcome goal of switching to a local and sustainable source for meat is possible to achieve, at least for a portion of the meal budget. The three hospitals that reduced meat purchases also received and used the highest number of BMC implementation tools. There was a positive correlation between receipt and usage of implementation tools (r=0·93, P=0·005).ConclusionsThe study demonstrates that hospitals in the Maryland/Washington, DC region that sign the BMC can increase the amount of sustainably produced meat purchased and served.

Abstract:
The Washington, DC Metropolitan region is representative of a larger trend in regions across the country: an increase in economic segregation and inequality that negatively affects both the rich and poor. Regionalist scholars propose that taking a region-wide policy approach in areas such as taxation, transportation, and housing can buttress place-based initiatives to create a more sustainable solution. This paper describes current inequality dynamics in the DC Metropolitan region, discusses current approaches to poverty reduction, and then recommends Regionalist policies as viable alternatives. Regionalist policies and successes provide relevant lessons for the DC Metropolitan region in particular as ways to alleviate the problems of inequality.

Abstract:
This paper presents a cost-benefit analysis of a youth development program run by Urban Alliance, a nonprofit organization headquartered in Washington, DC that provides paid internships to under-resourced high school students. Although Urban Alliance served over 1,500 youth across four locations through multiple programs during the 2013-14 academic year, this analysis focuses exclusively on the High School Internship Program (HSIP) in Washington, DC. Using a sub-national perspective, the costs and benefits experienced by all residents and groups in Washington, DC are considered in the analysis. The status quo to which this program is compared is student nonparticipation in any similar program. Under the base case, the program is expected to yield approximately $19 million in net benefits. This study concludes that the program is efficient and should continue to operate.
