Abstract:
The prison officer is central to prison life, yet understandings of this role are limited. This thesis argues that the two overarching (and often competitive)conceptualisations of prison officers' work as custodial work or human services work are limited. Eight conceptualisations of prison officers' work from the correctional literature are identified - Para-military officer, Security Officer, Warehouser of prisoners, Public Servant /bureaucrat, Professional, Manager of Prisoners , Therapist and Case Manager. These conceptualisations are defined and related to one another by examining their construction through discourses of prison purpose and prison process (Adler and Longhurst 1994). The thesis develops the analysis of du Gay (1996) that organisations use discourse as a means of constructing work identities for their employees and the work of Halford and Leonard (1999) who argue that workers are active agents in this process and do not always take on the identity the organisation is seeking to promote. The thesis addresses three research questions How has the role of the prison officer been conceptualised by the South Australian Department for Correctional Services over time? How is the role of the prison officer currently conceptualised by personnel working within South Australian prisons, what influences the way the role is conceptualised and what purposes do these conceptualisations serve? To what extent have the new conceptualisations of the role of the prison officer, articulated by the Department for Correctional Services in the last ten years, been adopted by staff within prisons and what determines the influence of these new conceptualisations? These questions are addressed using qualitative research techniques of document analysis and semi-structured interviews. The thesis identifies that in recent decades the Department has emphasised conceptualisations of the role constructed from normalisation and rehabilitative discourses. Interviewees, forty-four working in three South Australian prisons, (both departmental and privately managed), conceptualised the work of a prison officer as complex and unique and identified three influential audiences for the performance of prison officers' work – prisoners, officers and their colleagues, and the Departmental hierarchy. Interviewees constructed the role of the prison officer in terms that would earn respect for the work from each of these audiences and manage the vulnerability of the officer as a worker and a prison officer. Half of those interviewed conceptualised the prison officer based on a Manager of Prisoners. Other interviewees, critical of the role within their prison, described it as a Warehouser and saw the competition between custodial and human services roles as irreconcilable. The thesis argues that Departmental discourse can be seen to have a significant influence on the conceptualisation of the prison officer’s role by those working within prisons, but that it competes for influence with the discourse of the other powerful audiences for the performance of prison officers' work – prisoners and other staff.

Abstract:
John A. Warden developed the Five ring model and the enemy as a system. These models where used as a tool to find the enemies weak points. These models proved useful in a conventional conflict, and where very effective during the planning and execution of Operation Desert Storm. In recent times Wardens theories has been a subject of a debate, stating that they have played out there role as an effect of irregular warfare. This essay is going to try to see if it is precision-guided munitions that save Wardens theories in the fields of modern air-warfare planning in irregular warfare.

Abstract:
De tre parametrarna är "enemy as a system", "center of gravity" samt "parallell attack".

Abstract:
Colonel John A. Warden III (USAF ret.) has since 1988 developed a theoryregarding how the enemy best can be defeated. His work is based on a deductiveapproach, i.e. one starts with the general picture and follows the trail down towardsthe smallest detail. The foundation of his theory is the enemy can be regarded as asystem which can be divided into subsystems. The process of determining centersof gravity is the central importance for the theory. The ultimate goal is to imposeour will on the enemy through parallel warfare and thus inflicting physical orpsychological damage to him. Warden credits new technology as a great enablerfor new opportunities. The empirical study consists of two cases, the Gulf War 1990-1991 and the IraqWar 2003. This study structures the basics concepts enabling the question to beanswered; Were both air operations in the wars conducted in accordance withWardens’ theory? The core element of Wardens’ theory will be used as variables inthe empirical study. This thesis will close with a discussion regarding the universalapplicability of Wardens’ theory. The discussion will also include the subject ofhow smaller nations with limited resources can apply Wardens’ theory.

Abstract:
John A. Warden III is one the most mentioned air power theoretic of his time.He has written a number of theories concerning air power and the best way to use this to win wars. The author of this paper gives a short resume of what he consider are the central thoughts in John Warden´s theories. These thoughts result in four factors; Enemy as a system, centre of gravity, parallel attack/concentration and finally air superiority. These factors are then being used to inves-tigate if NATO used Wardens theories during the Kosovo war in 1999.The reason for the author to choose the Kosovo war specifically is due to the fact that NATO during the war only used air power as an instrument to get Serbia´s president Milosevic to the negotiation table but also the fact that this would turn out to be quite a challenge for NATO.The conclusion is that out of the four factors only one is traceable throughout the entire operation, and that is air superiority. Regarding the other three factors they can only be found in parts of the operation.

Abstract:
Air power has shown its usefulness throughout many wars and has been an effective tool for military interventions during the last decades. How airpower should be applied has been a highly debated topic for as long as it has been around. However, its use in humanitarian interventions is comparatively unresearched. One theorist that have received a lot of attention is John Warden and his five-ring-model. The purpose of this thesis is to test Wardens theory in humanitarian interventions, in order to contribute with research on the use of airpower in humanitarian interventions. This thesis is a comparative case study examining two similar and successful humanitarian interventions, Operation Deliberate Force and Operation Odyssey Dawn/Unified Protector. Results show that Wardens theory can not explain the success of the use of airpower in the operations. There are however some interesting similarities between the two operations that could be the key to success in humanitarian interventions. Further research is required to investigate this conclusion.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Air power alone cannot hold ground and secure the population. How then can air power contribute to irregular conflicts? Robert Johnson states in his article Predicting Future War that air power have the potential to determine the outcome of irregular operations. Even though air superiority was achieved during the two battles of Fallujah in Iraq 2004 there is a difference in the outcome of the two operations, Vigilant Resolve and Phantom Fury. The purpose of this thesis is to examine if Warden´s theory The Enemy as a System and his Five-Ring Model can explain the variation in the outcome of the two battles using a comparative case study. Research findings indicate that the Five-Ring Model cannot explain why the second operation, Phan-tom Fury was a victory. The findings indicate that striking the most critical ring, i.e. Leaders, did not contribute to victory. Instead, results indicate that the most critical ring leading to victory in the second operation were Infrastructure. The main conclusion of the thesis is that the theory cannot explain the variation in the outcomes and that Warden´s Five-Ring Model cannot be applied to an irregular enemy and therefore needs to be questioned and further researched. The findings further strengthen earlier research stating that the most critical part of an enemy may not always be represented by Leaders.

Abstract:
During the last decades airpower has become a useful tool for military interventions. Earlier research argues that air operations during the first Gulf war proved that strategic bombing could be effective due to modern technology and precision guided munitions. John Warden developed a theory based on strategic bombing, where he sees the enemy as a system, which is illustrated by a five-ring-model. The theory is widely discussed in the modern airpower debate, and has also been criticized because it has not been proved in any large-N study. Therefore, this essay aims to test Wardens five-ring-model in a comparative case study where two modern air operations have been chosen for investigation. The two operations are Operation Deliberate Force that took place Bosnia, 1995, and Operation Odyssey Dawn/Unified Protector that took place in Libya, 2011. The two operations have many similarities but differ in the time it took to reach their designated goals. The results indicate that Wardens theory is not capable of explaining why the two operations differed in the time it took to achieve its goals. The operations did not act according to Wardens five-ring-model to a sufficiently large extent when other targets were more frequently attacked than the ones that Warden advocates to be the most effective. Warden states that his theory is very general and can be used for any opponent, but the results of this essay indicate that it may be to general to be able to explain the outcome of an operation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
John A. Warden’s theory the enemy as a system has been influential and attributed to large scale victories, such as Operation Desert Storm. It advocates offensive use of air power by parallel attacks on the enemy’s strategic center. While doctrines of small states are dependent and influenced by the military thinking of great power nations, its capacity and necessary priorities for the use of air power may differ. This study examines Warden’s theory through two cases, the Six Day War and the Second Lebanon War. Both relied on air power executed by a small state, Israel. The result show that Warden’s theory can partly explain Israelic victory during the Six Day War, but with substantial differentiations from the theory’s advocation of attacks on the enemy strategic leadership. The findings are ambiguous and neither strengthens nor weakens the theory. The analysis of the Second Lebanon War indicates that air power was insufficient in achieving strategic victory in the war against Hezbollah, even though the execution of the air operation had significant resemblance to Warden’s theory, thus weakening the theory.

The purpose of the survey is to test whether a smaller state can use deception to reduce the impact of an opponent who uses Wardens theory regarding the enemy as a system. The survey focuses on an opponent's target acquisition before an attack and the deception that might complicate the target acquisition. The survey presents a number of ways to implement defensive deception, both before and during an attack. To aid the survey a fictitious target acquisition within Sweden has been produced with the support of Wardens literature and with the support of other sources. A comparison is made between the identified vulnerabilities and existing vulnerability reports. The survey has shown that all the presented fictitious targets except one has some use of the defensive deception as presented. Furthermore the survey has presented credible targets in Sweden that an opponent might choose to attack if the opponent makes use of Wardens theory. The survey has shown several vulnerabilities in Sweden if the opponents makes use of Wardens theory.

Abstract:
This study intends to contribute to the understanding of air power theory by studying the contrasting theories of John A. Warden and Robert A. Pape onto a single case. Warden advocates strategic bombing, while Pape condemns it. The theories are applied onto the Israeli air power in the Six-Day War, a war which played an important role for air power and where air power played an important role for the outcome. Both theories are among the most discussed and criticized ones, including by the other author respectively. By thoroughly examining them onto the same single case, their generalizability is evaluated in relation to each other. The empirical data consisted of six descriptive works of the war, from which each event of air sorties was analysed and matched with the theories. The air sorties of each theory were then evaluated by occurrence and effect to the wars outcome, i.e. the contribution to the Israeli victory. The results of the analysis imply that Warden’s theory have a better ability to explain the success of the Israeli Air Force than Pape’s theory, but no major conclusions of their generalizability can be drawn. None of the theories where found fully sufficient to explain the case, i.e. some parts of the theories did not occur in Six-Day War according to the study.

Abstract:
During the Six-day war, Israel unexpectedly defeated four enemies and emerged victorious in only six days. This study attempts to examine how this was accomplished and the extent to which Sweden, also a small state, might be able to apply the lessons learned from Israel’s use of air power. To this end, the present study’s analysis draws on the theoretical perspectives of two widely known and acknowledged air power scholars, Robert A. Pape and John A. Warden. Their respective theories ”Coercion by Denial” and ”The Enemy as a System” on the use of air power seem in important ways to be in opposition to one another. However, study findings indicate that Israel combined elements from both approaches and neither theory can alone provide sufficient guidance for a small state. Therefore, the two theoretical perspectives were found to be complementary, where drawing on certain key dimensions of each could be the most favourable for a small state such as Sweden. In particular, the results of the analysis underline the importance of achieving air superiority. This study concludes that the uniqueness of each nation’s strategic context indicates the potential need for new theoretical insights, better tailored for small states.

Abstract:
John A. Warden III is renowned as one of the theorists closest to devising a new paradigm in air power. His praised theory about the enemy as a system has showed applicable on terrorist organizations amongst other areas. The most recent developed domain for warfare is the so-called “cyberspace”. There is an on-going debate concerning the importance and definition of this domain and furthermore what potential and challenges it withholds as a future arena for warfare. Some claims that a cyberattack can’t be seen as an act of war due to its lack of physical violence. Previous research show however a lack in application of theories within this domain. This thesis therefore aims to examine to which extent Warden’s theory of the enemy as a system could be applied to the cyberattack known as Stuxnet. Results show that Warden’s theory have some applicatory power on the cyberattack Stuxnet, although primarily in an indirect aspect. This study therefore shows an ability concerning the theory’s applicatory power on other areas than air power. The findings of the research regarding previous arguments about cyberwar also states that a cyberattack now could be seen as physical violent.

Abstract:

The U.S. Air Force Colonel John A. Warden III, has presented a theory that one can see the enemy as a system of systems to find his weaknesses. The theory is based on creating an image of the enemy through a predefined subdivision into subsystems consisting of five rings. This image must then be broken down into further sub-system consisting of the same five rings that eventually reveals the enemy's centers of gravity. This essay examines whether the Warden theory can apply to Al Qaeda

Abstract:
This essay discusses the similarities between USAF Colonel (ret.) JohnWarden’s airpower theories produced in the late 1980, and those of the USArmy Air Corps Tactical School (ACTS) formed during 1926 – 1935.Their relatively obvious resemblance would suggest that Warden in fact wasinfluenced by ACTS when he was producing his theories to such an extent, that his novelty would come in question. An analysis of the contents of the two theories is conducted in order to compareand evaluate the actual resemblance, following a discussion that clarifiesif one could assume that Warden is a copy cat or not. He is thoughfound to be so to a lesser and natural extent. On the other hand he contributesat such a degree with the work he offers that one has to say that he givesas well as takes. One can say that Warden fertilises the theories already presented some 50years before and, recycling the concept of centres of gravity and the importanceof strategic paralysis. He does though introduce the concept of parallelwarfare and takes the systematisation to the next level.• The most significant conclusions of the analysis wold be the following:• Warden utilises the same conceptual groundwork för his theories as didthe ACTS.• Both ACTS and Warden addresses an industrialised and known enemy, with a favourable structure to attack.• Warden introduces parallel warfare and aims ti incapacitate an enemy at amuch higher rate than did the ACTS• Warden also makes a science out of analysing and assessing an enemiescenters of gravity. As a tool for analysis, this essay has used one presented by USAF ColonelPeter Faber, found after evaluation to have been sufficient for the task.

Abstract:

Abstract:
During the last decades, air defense has been the core mission of the Swedish Air Force. This has come at the expense of offensive strike capability. However, this may be about to change. In the coming defense bill it is proposed that the Swedish Air Force will acquire cruise missiles during the 2020´s. With the aim of ensuring that this new capability will generate the maximal operational effect for the Air Force, this essay has examined how the current Swedish air doctrine,TR LuftOp 2017, views offensive strike operations today and how this possibly may change with the new capabilities offered by cruise missiles.  This has been done through a qualitative text research method where John A. Warden´s and Robert A. Pape´s theories of offensive air power have been used as the theoretical framework. The result shows that the Swedish air doctrine today closely resembles Robert A. Papes theory, with the exception of some signs of Warden´s thoughts. However, most signs suggest, and it is this essays conclusion, that the acquisition of cruise missiles probably will result in the Swedish air doctrine adopting more of Warden´s theory at the expense of Pape´s theory.

Abstract:
The Russian-Georgian war of 2008 drastically changed Europe´s and Sweden´s political climate.Russiashowed that it is capable of successfully completing complex campaigns including ground, naval and air assets. However, not much has been said about the theoretical framework and doctrine of the Russian military of today. Even less has been researched about Russian use of air power and applied air theory. Are air power assets still considered primarily as support of ground offensives or has the theoretical framework changed? John A. Warden III´s theory presented in The Air Campaign and The Enemy as a System have had a big impact on western air power use. HasRussia also changed its approach on the use of air power to include the theory of Warden? This thesis researches Russian use of air power in the war with Georgia 2008. The empirics are then compared to Warden´s theory of air power use to answer the question if Russia´s air power use in the war with Georgia 2008 was done in cohesion with what Warden suggests.

Abstract:
The conflicts in southern Africa during the second part of the 20th-century are today a piece of half-forgotten history that immediately invokes images of the South African apartheid regime. Under immense pressure from the outside world, South Africa fought a conflict against a communist force that enjoyed support from states such as Cuba and the Soviet Union. The conflict tended to rise and fall in intensity and during the latter part of the war; conventional operations were executed deep into Angolan territory in order to halt the enemy offensive. In this study the South African use of fighter jets are compared to John A. Warden III’s theories on how an air war should be fought. Wardens claim to fame came with the Gulf war and the following conflicts that used methods that spawned from his ideas on how airpower should be used. This essay examines to what extent Wardens ideas are applicable to the South African border war.  The analysis shows that specific events and operations correlate with Wardens ideas, however there are no significant signs of what might be interpreted as operations of the type of conceptual thinking that Wardens uses on the larger, strategic scale.

Abstract:
Airpower has shown its usefulness throughout many wars and was seen as a key instrument in the Libyan war 2011. However, the use of airpower and how it should be applied has been a highly debated topic for as long as airpower has been around. Two theorists, John A. Warden III and Robert A. Pape, have received a lot of attention and there is a debate regarding which one of these theorists has the best solution on how to use airpower. The purpose with this essay is to apply some of the two theorists’ ideas on the Libyan war 2011 and investigate their explanatory power in the conflict. To reach an answer, a case study has been used with a theory testing method which would further seek to contribute to the debate that exists between the two theorists. Results show that some parts of the theorists’ ideas have a high explanatory power in the conflict and some parts do not. As individuals, they cannot explain the whole war, but together their ideas have a high explanatory power in the conflict. Based on the ongoing debate that provides two different ways of using airpower, the conclusions suggest that a combination of the two theorists’ ideas might be the answer to how airpower can be employed in the best way for future operations. Further research is required to investigate this thesis.

Abstract:
The theories on how to use airpower as coercion are divided between those who advocate strategic bombing and those who advocate support for land operations. The purpose of this study is to analyze whether Pape and/or Warden´s airpower theories applied on Operation Allied Force can explain how NATO´s air force was used. The result shows that both the Warden´s Enemy as a system and Pape´s Denial strategy can partly explain the outcome. Warden´s 5-ring system is the only variable in the survey assigned with a high variable value; this is because the analysis shows that it is judged to influence the outcome extensively. Parallel attacks occurred at low frequency and have a low variable value. Pape´s theory occurred with high frequency in variable support for the ground forces, however, the analysis shows that no variable value from Pape´s theory received higher variables than the medium. The conclusion is that both theories can explain how NATO used airpower during the operation but to different degrees.

Abstract:
This paper examines if the Swedish Armed Forces describes its air forces from a revolutionary or evolutionary approach. The idea of revolutionary approach derives from the thoughts that air forces have changed the character of war while the evolutionary approach rests on the idea that air forces is a development of warfare just like the machine gun. The two approaches are represented by two theorists, John Warden as the revolutionary and Martin van Creveld as the evolutionary.  The writer has, by examining the Swedish Armed Forces doctrines and the Armed Forces plans for development from a revolutionary and evolutionary point of view, got an answer to the question. The examination shows that the Swedish Armed Forces describes its air forces from an evolutionary approach when it comes to integration into the Armed Forces and the focus in joint operations with its benefits. The air forces are also described from a revolutionary approach when it comes to air superiority and command.

Abstract:
The bombing of Dresden is one of the most controversial actions carried out by the allied air forces during World War 2. Some argue that Dresden was a civilian target, without strategic or military value. The purpose of this essay is to analyse Dresden as a target for the allied air forces using Giulio Douhets and John A. Warden IIIs theories of the use of air forces. This essay aims to investigate if and how one can justify Dresden as a military and strategic target by using Douhets and Wardens theories. The essay is conducted through qualitative content analysis and comparative analysis to compare the theories with case. The result shows how one can justify the bombing of Dresden using Douhets and Wardens theories.

Abstract:

Abstract:
To measure and evaluate the opponent’s and your own warfare capability is essential in all types of military conflicts. Swedish doctrine presents the column model as a tool for this. Given that the Swedish armed forces have undergone major changes since the column model was first introduced in the Swedish doctrines, it is possible that it doesn’t fulfill its role in the types of military conflicts that Sweden is now participating in. In this paper it is carried out a theory testing study of the model in order to study if it is still applicable in its existing form. The model is tested toward the theories of David Galula and John Warden which describes two types of military operations that the Swedish armed forces are or have recently participated in.The study shows that the factors included in the column model also are present in Galula’s and Warden's theories and that the column model still applies in its existing form. However, the model can be interpreted in a variety of ways and the importance of its constituent elements are different for different types of conflicts. To enhance the usability additional explanations about the model and the concept of warfare capability is needed as well as a clarification of how the physical, conceptual and moral factors are interdependent.

Abstract:
According to NATO Review, in 2013 it was estimated that over 97% of the world's telecommunications were transmitted via the internet and that this was a growing trend. This essentiality for communication means that information systems have become a natural target and point of attack in military actions and planning. This thesis aims to test the possibility to apply the theory of The enemy as a system and the concentric five-ring modeldeveloped by air force theorist Jon A. Warden III, to the cyber arena. To achieve this aim, the thesis presents a qualitative text analysis of seven different sources describing NotPetya. The targets and effects of the cyber attack are evaluated based upon the concentric five-ring model and the concept of parallel attack. The results of the analysis shows that Warden's theory is highly applicable to the case of NotPetya. This in turn could point to the theory’s applicability to the cyber domain and to strategic operations in cyberspace. However no major conclusions of generalizability can be drawn.

Abraham, Glenn J. "PRISONERS SERVING SENTENCES OF LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE: A QUALITATIVE STUDY AND SURVEY." UKnowledge, 2011. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/gradschool_diss/814.

Full text
Abstract:
This mixed methods exploratory study examined how adult male prisoners serving sentences of life without parole adapt to the probability that they will be incarcerated for the remainder of their lives. As a second element, state prison wardens were surveyed about their support for the provision of certain amenities to those serving life without parole and the extent to which they believed those prisoners presented a risk of future dangerousness. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 24 inmates serving sentences of life without parole at a high security prison in Ohio. Informants identified factors that made adjustment more difficult or which enhanced the ability to adapt. Some study participants expressed hope that a favorable court decision or a change in sentencing laws would lead to release from prison. A survey sent to 430 state prison wardens asked if they supported providing prisoners serving life without parole amenities involving access to academic and vocational education programs, special housing assignments, and special programs to enhance adaptation. Wardens were asked to rate the extent to which they believed those prisoners presented a risk of future dangerousness. Study hypotheses were tested to determine if factors related to wardens’ prior work experience as a correction officer or in a treatment position, opinions about the primary purpose of prison, experience as a warden of a facility that housed prisoners serving life without parole, level of educational attainment, and gender impacted support for amenities and perception of future dangerousness. Three different two-way ANOVA tests were conducted, each of which had a categorical predictor variable and moderating independent variables of educational attainment and gender. Several of the main effects did reach the level of statistical significance. A reported belief that rehabilitation was the primary purpose of prison and level of educational attainment were significant in predicting wardens’ support for amenities. Having served as the warden of a prison at which inmates serving life without parole were housed and being female were found to be related to a lower perception of future dangerousness.

Abstract:
In 2011, a coalition of member states in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization together with partner nations outside of the alliance cooperated against the Libyan regime led by Colonel Muammar Khadaffi. The primary goals of the operations in Libya were to protect the civil population from attacks by the Libyan regime, maintain the no-flyzone and arms embargo. The operations in Libya proved to be successful and many authors claims that airpower were the main key to the victory.John A. Warden III and Robert A. Pape have been mentioned in discussions about airpower and there have also been a debate regarding which theory that best describes how air power should be used. Some authors who have examined the Libyan war claims that the outcome can be understood with John Wardens theories while other claims that it can be understood from Robert Papes theories. This study aims to examine and try to understand the outcome of the air campaign in Libya 2011. Based on the accomplishment of air power in the Libyan civil war along with the debate between John Warden and Robert Pape the conclusion of this study is that the success in the war can be identified in both theories. John Warden’s theory about strategic airpower together with Robert Pape’s theory about direct support of ground forces seems to be the key factor that ended the war with a successful outcome.

Abstract:
A novel approach which has potential to improve quality of patient care on general hospital wards is proposed. Patient care is a labour-intensive task that requires high input of human resources. A Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) system is proposed which can go some way towards improving patient monitoring on general hospital wards. In this system vital signs are gathered from patients and sent to a control unit for centralized monitoring. The RPM system can complement the role of nurses in monitoring patients’ vital signs. They will be able to focus on holistic needs of patients thereby providing better personal care. Wireless network technologies, ZigBee and Wi-Fi, are utilized for transmission of vital signs in the proposed RPM system. They provide flexibility and mobility to patients. A prototype system for RPM is designed and simulated. The results illustrated the capability, suitability and limitation of the chosen technology.

Full text
Abstract:
Background One in ten hospital patients are unintentionally harmed by their healthcare management. Healthcare professionals are often blamed for making mistakes that could be prevented if all the factors influencing human performance were addressed by designing the system to be safer. Hypothesis This thesis is part of the Designing Out Medical Error (DOME) project, which tested the hypothesis that a multidisciplinary team of designers, clinicians, psychologists and business analysts working collaboratively could design interventions to improve patient safety in surgical wards. Methods & Results We used a combination of observational techniques including Healthcare Failure Mode and Effects Analysis to proactively assess risk in surgical wards. We focused on five high-risk processes: hand hygiene, isolation of healthcare-associated infection, vital signs monitoring, handover communication and medication delivery. Patients and healthcare professionals were involved at every stage and helped co-design a suite of concepts to address risk in these processes. We progressed two prototypes: the Respiratory Rate Recorder and the CareCentre® (a bedside work table containing equipment including alcohol hand-rub) to simulated and clinical trials. The trials demonstrated that the accuracy of manual respiratory rate measurement and the adherence of healthcare workers to hand hygiene guidelines was significantly improved respectively, thus supporting the hypothesis. Conclusion Multidisciplinary collaborations that engage with the teams, processes and equipment of the healthcare system can co-design safer interventions. Better design can influence behaviour and improve the performance of healthcare professionals. The DOME project demonstrates a successful method for others to follow.

Abstract:
My purpose with this Essay is to examine if the theories of John Boyd andJohn A. Warden III will stand a test of reality. I therefore look at theplanning, execution and result of The Battle of Britain in order to do this. The essay is divided into four different parts. The first part deals with theexpression Air Power, its basic characteristics, advantages and limitations. This part is meant to lead a non air force officer into the essay and make itunderstandable. The next part is an analysis of the theories and the thoughtsbehind them. After this the two parts is amalgamated in order to createknowledge and a comprehensive view of Air Power and its theories. Thethird part is the test of the theories. In this part The Battle of Britain isdivided into four different phases in order to create a good structure and apossibility for the reader to follow me in my discussions. The theories aretested by looking at preparation, carrying through and results in bothGerman and British behaviour. By saying this I want to stress that thepurpose with the essay is not to examine why the German campaign endedas it did or why RAF took the victory, nor is it a test of which one of thetheories is the better one. It is a test where I look at Boyd by examineRAF/FC planning, carrying through and results and Warden by doing thesame on Luftwaffe. The fourth part is a summing up, where the question ofthe essay is answered. In my answer I level criticism against the “five ring model” of JohnWarden. The remark I do concerns the idea of separating the political willfrom the people. I find this separation valid only when looking on adictatorship not a democracy. In this discussion I find that the targetingmodel affects the theory in the way that it only suits physical destructionbased on parallel attacks and not psychic breakdown. The theory of John Boyd passes without remarks.Having said this I discuss what these results tells us. I find that the essayproves the possibility to falsify a theory but that the result is valid in thiscase only. The main issue I want to point out with my result though is thatit can work as a springboard for further examinations of these theories. Ifother authors come to the same result as I, with their examinations made onother real events, the conclusion must be that the answers all togetherproofs that the theory limps. How many answers that must point in thesame direction I don’t know, the important thing is that the theories aretested, otherwise the risk is that they can be looked at as truths, which theyare not.

Price, Christopher Nicholas Turt. "Mr Ward's Commission : manners, musicians, and music at the Canterbury Catch Club." Thesis, Durham University, 2018. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/12660/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an extended examination of a lithograph, dated 1826, purporting to show a meeting of the Canterbury Catch Club—a musical society which flourished in the early nineteenth century. A very large collection of documents relating to the Club, now held in the Cathedral Library and Archives and the city Library, is used extensively to interrogate the print in order to assess what it tells us about the social, historical and cultural context within which the Club members and musicians promoted, performed and consumed the music which was, ostensibly, the Club’s raison-d’être. The thesis begins with an iconographical study comparing the image with other representations of convivial song of the period, and with contemporary written accounts of such evenings to be found in diaries and other literature, to ascertain how accurate it might be in its depiction of gentlemen at such an evening as this. After this, the archival evidence is then used to scrutinise, in Part I, that which is clearly visible; in Part II, that which is less clearly drawn—the musicians; and finally, in Part III, those elements conspicuous by their absence. Part I thus makes clear that the image is intended to assert the professional and socio-cultural identity of the gentlemen shown in the picture, by dint of careful composition and adherence to matters of dress, consumption, gender definition, and cultural association. Part II uses both Club and Cathedral records to investigate the extent to which the musicians employed by the Club may—as was often the case—have sung in the Cathedral Choir, and contributes to scholarship on this subaltern group of men by the use of detailed reference to hitherto unseen archival records. Part III—not for the first time in the thesis—notes the absence of women, whether as audience or performer, and then proceeds to a searching analysis of the musical repertoire itself, discussing the instrumental and vocal music which made up the programme of a Club evening, arguing that the musical taste evidenced here speaks volumes for the process of aspirational embourgoisement at work in this print and in society at large. This work is substantiated by extensive transcription, cataloguing and documentation of the Club’s archive and repertoire. Further reference is made to the clues herein about another aspect of Club culture noticeably absent from this print: the libertine revelry of the later evening singing. This speaks to a central point of the thesis: that this “after-evening” behaviour is a fascinating relic of the manners and mores of the Georgian period which gave it birth, offering Club members an opportunity to indulge in convivial behaviours which were unacceptable in more public environments. The thesis argues that the image is a telling assertion of socio-political identity at a turbulent point in British history, proclaiming an emerging certain social and economic status but also testifying eloquently to the continuation of an older, alternative, convivial culture.

Kohn, Denise Marie. "The Feminist Trollope: Hero(in)es in The Warden and Barchester Towers." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1992. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc500980/.

Full text
Abstract:
Although Anthony Trollope has traditionally been considered an anti-feminist author, studies within the past decade have shown that Trollope's later novels show support for female power and sympathy for Victorian women who were dissatisfied with their narrow roles in society. A feminist reading of two of his earliest novels, The Warden and Barchester Towers, shows that Trollope's feminism is not limited to his later works. In The Warden, Trollope acclaims female power and "woman's logic" through female characters and the womanly warden, Septimus Harding. In Barchester Towers, Trollope continues to support feminism through his positive portrayals of strong, independent women and the androgynous Harding. In Barchester Towers, the battle of the sexes ends in a balance of power.

Schofield, Derrick D. "Prison Leadership: The Relationship Between Warden Leadership Style and Correctional Officer Job Satisfaction." Diss., Piedmont International University, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/84508.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between Tennessee wardens’ leadership practices and correctional officer job satisfaction. Utilizing the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI), the relationship between correctional officers’ perception of the warden’s leadership practices and the LPI norms were examined. Additionally, utilizing the LPI, the relationship between self-ratings of the warden’s leadership practices and the observer rating of the LPI were assessed. Lastly, utilizing the Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS) and observer LPI, correlations were examined between the correctional officers’ job satisfaction and their perception of the warden’s leadership practices. Findings of this study showed lower correctional officers ratings of the wardens on the five LPI subscales than the inventory’s norms. In a comparison of the LPI wardens’ self-perception and the correctional officers’ observer perception, correctional officers rated the wardens lower than the wardens rated themselves. The overall ratings of the correctional officer Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS)were neutral. However, of the nine JSS subscales, the results identified the nature of their work and supervision as the most positive. Pay, contingent reward, and promotional opportunities were rated as the primary reasons for job dissatisfaction. Additional findings indicated a positive relationship between job satisfaction and each of the five subscales of the LPI.

Storm, Lize-Mariè. "Rehabilitation and (dis-)empowerment a discourse analysis of interviews with subjects variously positioned within the South African Correctional Services system." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/374.

Full text
Abstract:
The present treatise is an attempt to come to terms with the, by all accounts, dismal conditions that exist in present-day South African prisons by addressing these conditions as they are reflected in two interviews with individuals intimately acquainted with them, as well as by pertinent media-reports. The study is predicated on the belief that the most suitable methodological approach to a situation characterized by extreme conflicts and tensions in terms of power relations, is provided by (mainly Foucaultian) discourse-theory and the discourse-analysis that it makes possible. Consequently, after an introduction in which the present study is justified, followed by a theoretical section outlining the terrain of discourse theory and discourse-analysis, two chapters are devoted to specific discourse-analyses of interviews with an awaiting-trial prisoner in a South African prison and a warden employed at the same institution, with a view to uncovering the power-relations at stake here. While acknowledging that the implications of the insights thus afforded are not, strictly speaking, generalizable in a positivist manner, and that the power-relations brought to light by means of these discourse-analyses are highly specific, it is argued that various other studies pertaining to the South African prison system indicate that these powerrelations – more specifically the disempowerment of prisoners by the functioning of violently hierarchical discursive practices in South African prisons - are not restricted to the prison in question. In fact, given the SA Correctional Services’ stated policy of rehabilitation, it is striking that there is scant evidence of any such rehabilitation in the prisons concerned – at least in the sense of prisoners attaining a level of moral responsibility that would enable them to live as accountable citizens in a democratic society. In conclusion it is argued that the present state of affairs, far from being conducive to the stated goal of rehabilitation, actually undermines its realization, and that the social and economic inequalities in South Africa, exacerbated by the union between ‘democracy’ and global capitalism, are perpetuated and reinforced by the existing discursive practices in South African prisons.

Abstract:

Palmer, George H. "Stoep funerals : a Challenge to Pastoral Care." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/46080.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is concerned with how the black township church leadership mismanage their defunct members especially at times of funerals. In the absence of a pragmatic pastoral method of how to deal with defunct members when they die, the church has devised a church policy which adds to the already experienced pain and grief of mourners. The criteria in the policy stipulates that, if at the time of death, the member has become defunct with regard to: - Church attendance, - Dedicated giving ( tithing ), the person should be given a stoep funeral. The problem with this policy, is the manner in which it is communicated to mourners - cold and insensitive, loaded with arrogance and rigidity. Cases are not viewed on merit but mourners are being emotionally and spiritually destroyed by this practice. Stoep funerals have developed a negative stigma in the townships since everyone is aware of the punishment being meted out to the deceased. Because of their alleged dysfunctionality , defunct members gets treated like spiritual criminals by the leadership through the refusal of church funerals. Church funerals are reserved for those who are in good standing and who enjoy implacable status in the church in relation to the mentioned criteria. The priest is expected to conduct church funerals while the lay ministers are assigned to do stoep funerals. A stoep funeral is an embarrassment and it leaves mourners with feelings of rejection and shame, if not truamatization. The aim of this research is to assist the township church to journey with her defunct members in creating a model directed by scriptural truth from a perspective of African pastoral care.
