Abstract:
This collection consists of a critical preface and five linked short stories. The preface analyzes the usage of violence in literate and other forms of media, and specifically the ways in which literature can address violence without aggrandizing or stylizing it. The stories explore this idea through the lens of the lives of two young men, following them from boyhood marked by violence to adulthood crushed by the trauma of the American Civil War. Collection includes the stories "Dead Foxes," "Cow Pen," "Fatherless," "Woodsmoke," and "Brotherhood."

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of Lev Gumilyevsky's first collection «Stories from the Modern War» (Saratov, 1915), which touches on the topic of physical and moral mutilation of participants and witnesses of the First World War; the particular attention is paid to the representation of corporeality (including physical disability). The works have features of expressionist aesthetics that help to fully reveal the dehumanizing essence of war. The opening collection of the story «At Dawn» is analyzed in the most detail, as well as its first version, published on the pages of the Magazine for Women (1914) under the title «In the Trenches».

Save the Children, Civil Society Agriculture Network (CISANET), and the Institute of Development Studies, November 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ids.2022.077.

Full text
Abstract:
Malawi has made significant progress in improving nutrition outcomes in the past decades. Despite this, the rates of stunting and anaemia remain high and overweight and obesity amongst women is rising. Malawi remains one of the most committed countries to nutrition, ranking 3rd out of 45 African countries on the Hunger and Nutrition Commitment Index, but effective implementation of policies is still challenging. Progress is being inhibited by a lack of dedicated budget lines for nutrition at district level, over reliance on external donors, poor coordination and competing priorities for limited resources within sectoral budgets. The pandemic, climate change and the Ukraine war have disrupted food systems, increased prices of fuel, fertilizer, and food, and caused loss of harvest and livelihoods, threatening to reverse decades of progress. Positive and coordinated action is needed to increase financial commitment to food and nutrition security, ensure nutrition is prioritised in the nation’s economic and development agenda, and continue Malawi’s progress to reducing malnutrition.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the process of preparation and features of conducting interviews with persons who have fased traumatic experiences in war conditions. A comparative analysis of the typical interview and sensitive interview is presented, which allows journalists to comply with all requirements that would not harm interviewees and preserve the balance in the journalist-guest-audience triad. The essence of the new terminology that began to be used in Ukraine during the full-scale war – «journalism of trauma» and «collective trauma» – is revealed. Emphasis is put on society’s ability to experience and make sense of collective trauma through the stories of individuals told in sensitive interviews. Sensitive content is significant during the war, because through human stories and personal testimonies, the world gets an idea of horrors, so one can feel the fullness of this tragic stage in the country’s history. Russia’s war against Ukraine significantly changed the working conditions of journalists, because the need to cover tragic events (murders, rapes, shelling, destruction) forced media representatives to study new rules of communication. Sensitive interviews require more thorough preparation, often even contradicting the established rules that editorial offices have used for years. Reliving the trauma and strong emotions during such interviews can help society form a new experience if the interview is conducted properly, or retraumatize if the journalist has neglected important rules. Ukrainian interviewers gain this unique practice for world journalism every day, which makes scientific research relevant and necessary. Key words: interview; empathy; collective trauma; sensitive content; standards of journalistic creativity; war journalism.

Kitsa, Mariana, and Iryna Mudra. THE TOPIC OF WAR ON THE PAGES OF WOMEN’S ONLINE MEDIA (DUE TO THE RESULTS OF THE CONTENT ANALYSIS OF THE MATERIALS “UKRAINKA”, “4 MAMA”, “WONDER UKRAINE”, “SLUTCH.UA” AND “DIVOCHE. MEDIA”). Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, March 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2024.54-55.12162.

Full text
Abstract:
Main objectives of the study. Women’s online media make up a significant part of the Ukrainian media market. There are online magazines, online newspapers, online sites of printed women’s publications on the Internet, and there are those resources that simply call themselves sites for women, but by all indications we can classify them as online media. The content of women’s mass media is mainly characterized by narrow thematic content, gender orientation, light and positive content. But on February 24, 2022, Russian troops invaded the territory of Ukraine on a full scale, and the content of many Ukrainian women’s online media also underwent changes. The topic of war appeared in the content of online media for women. However, some women’s online media haven`t changed their content and main topics. The purpose of the study is to show how women’s online media publish war-related material on their pages. The set goal involves solving the following tasks: to find out how are women’s Ukrainian online media functioning in 2022-2023; select those whose pages contain materials about the war; to analyze military-themed publications in women’s online media. The subject of the research is materials related to the Russian-Ukrainian war in women’s online media (“Ukrainki”, “4 Mama”, “Wonder Ukraine”, “Clutch.ua”, “Divoche. Media”) for 2022-2023. The novelty of the study is that for the first time the content of women’s online media (“Ukrainki”, “4 Mama”, “Wonder Ukraine”, “Clutch.ua”, “Divoche. Media”) on the topic of the war for 2022-2023 was investigated. Findings. It was examined that the genre palette of materials is diverse, but informational materials still predominate. In terms of topics, the following prevail: social and everyday problems, psychological problems, volunteering, military, activities of showbiz stars during the war, migration (refugees), occupation, stories from life, news of events from the life of the country and the world. Keywords: women’s magazines, online media for women, Russian-Ukrainian war, content, topic.

Abstract:
A review of evidence was conducted to understand the trends and determinants of malnutrition and identify interventions and programmes that improved maternal and child nutrition in Malawi. While children are less malnourished than two decades ago, one in three children remains stunted (37%) and 63% are anaemic. Children born from younger and less educated mothers, or from poorer rural households are more likely to be malnourished. One in ten children are born with a low birth weight (< 2.5kgs), with nearly half of them stunted by age two. The main causes of malnutrition include recurring sickness, poor infant and young child feeding and hygiene practices and low use of health and nutrition services, influenced by a wide range of factors, including food insecurity, poverty, gender inequality and food taboos. Programme evaluations and intervention trials have shown mixed results but overall highlight the need to address the multiple underlying drivers of malnutrition, rather than focus on one intervention.

Full text
Abstract:
Covid-19 Responses for Equity (CORE) was a three-year, CA$25m rapid research initiative that brought together 20 research projects to understand the socioeconomic impacts of the pandemic, improve existing responses, and generate better policy options for recovery. The research, funded by the Canadian International Development Research Centre (IDRC), took place across 42 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. The Institute of Development Studies (IDS) supported CORE to maximise the learning generated across the research portfolio and deepen engagement with governments, civil society, and the scientific community. This publication celebrates the impact of that research, and highlights Stories of Change from seven of the CORE projects that successfully influenced policy, practice, and understandings of the crisis. Collectively, these individual case studies provide a narrative about the nature of research impact in emergencies and the implications for the design and delivery of future rapid response research initiatives. There are clear lessons around the importance of organisational reputation, and the value of co-designing research with decision makers whilst simultaneously taking a critical position. Every story here emphasises the need to understand political context and to explore the trade-offs between research rigour and the timeliness of evidence. Above all, they illustrate the value of flexible funding arrangements that enable local teams to respond to fast-moving crises. These stories demonstrate unequivocally the value of locally led research responses to emergencies with the right international flow of resources and support. CORE’s research teams were well-placed to bring together communities, civil society organisations, and governments to create a space for vulnerable and marginalised groups to discuss their lived experiences of the pandemic and bring these perspectives into policy conversations. Their success hinged on their hyper-local knowledge and their unswerving focus on providing real-time evidence to advocate for the wellbeing of affected communities.

Meteorological influences of a major dust storm in Southwest Asia during July–August 2018. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), November 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/45960.

Full text
Abstract:
Dust storms can be hazardous for aviation, military activities, and respiratory health and can occur on a wide variety of spatiotemporal scales with little to no warning. To properly forecast these storms, a comprehensive understanding of the meteorological dynamics that control their evolution is a prerequisite. To that end, we chose a major dust storm that occurred in Southwest Asia during July–August 2018 and conducted an observation-based analysis of the meteorological conditions that influenced the storm’s evolution. We found that the main impetus behind the dust storm was a large-scale meteorological system (i.e., a cyclone) that affected Southwest Asia. It seems that cascading effects from this system produced a smaller, near-surface warm anomaly in Mesopotamia that may have triggered the dust storm, guided its trajectory over the Arabian Peninsula, and potentially catalyzed the development of a small low-pressure system over the southeastern end of the peninsula. This low-pressure system may have contributed to some convective activity over the same region. This type of analysis may provide important information about large-scale meteorological forcings for not only this particular dust storm but also for future dust storms in Southwest Asia and other regions of the world.

"This study explored whether leaders’ thought patterns (specifically cognitive distortions) and emotion regulation strategies (specifically cognitive reappraisal, cognitive defusion, and expressive suppression) relate to their work experiences. Findings suggest that leaders’ cognitive distortions are related to their work experiences and that emotion regulation strategies can help leaders mitigate the effects of cognitive distortions. More specifically, the results of this study offer the following insights: • Leaders’ cognitive distortions related to all examined workplace topics (role ambiguity, role conflict, social support, perceived organizational support, job satisfaction, and burnout). • Leaders’ use of emotion regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal and cognitive defusion) mitigated the impact their cognitive distortions had on burnout, specifically. • Attempting to suppress emotional responses was relatively ineffective compared to the other two emotion regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal and cognitive defusion). These insights suggest that certain emotion regulation strategies may be helpful in ameliorating the deleterious effects of cognitive distortions on leaders’ burnout. The current paper provides an overview of the different cognitive distortions and emotion regulation strategies explored and includes advice on what leaders can do to more effectively notice and manage cognitive distortions that emerge during distressing situations.
