Stein, Emma Natalya. Constructing Kanchi. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463729123.

Full text
Abstract:
This book traces the emergence of the South Indian city of Kanchi as a major royal capital and multireligious pilgrimage destination during the era of the Pallava and Chola dynasties (circa seventh through thirteenth centuries). It presents the first-ever comprehensive picture of historical Kanchi, locating the city and its more than 100 spectacular Hindu temples at the heart of commercial and artistic exchange that spanned India, Southeast Asia, and China. The author demonstrates that Kanchi was structured with a hidden urban plan, which determined the placement and orientation of temples around a central thoroughfare that was also a burgeoning pilgrimage route. Moving outwards from the city, she shows how the transportation networks, river systems, residential enclaves, and agrarian estates all contributed to the vibrancy of Kanchi’s temple life. The construction and ongoing renovation of temples in and around the city, she concludes, has enabled Kanchi to thrive continuously from at least the eighth century, through the colonial period, and up until the present.

Abstract:
If pilgrimage is found almost universally across religious traditions, it has also, in modern contexts, become widely associated with places that have no specific religious affiliations or links to formal religious traditions. ‘Secular sites and contemporary developments’ describes a variety of themes and activities described as secular and nonreligious pilgrimages, along with other modern developments in which existing pilgrimage sites have acquired new dimensions and been reinterpreted in accord with contemporary trends, notably in the form of New Age activities. These include visits to the graves and homes of deceased celebrities, war memorials, places associated with seminal political figures, and itineraries relating to the search for cultural roots, identity, and heritage.

Abstract:
The chapter analyzes the place of pilgrimage in the Dharmaśāstra literature. It suggests that the mentioning of specific place names, the narratives of the places, and their merit distinguish the emergence of a textual tradition of pilgrimage. The topic of pilgrimage places and pilgrimage enter the Dharmaśāstra textual tradition fully only with the Dharmanibandhas, and the number of texts that treat tīrtha and tīrthayātrā as a subject of Dharmaśāstra is surprisingly small. Arguably, the inclusion of pilgrimage in the Dharmanibandhas was to infuse orthodoxy into a tradition that was to some degree driven by the economic benefits of the tīrtha priests. Further, their inclusion indicated that pilgrimage had become central to the economy of certain places. Another purpose may perhaps have been to establish rules and regulations to promote pilgrimage as a practice appropriate for Brahmans. Finally, geographical integration was probably also a factor.
