Abstract:
The Wana people of Morowali accept the experiences of pain, illness and loss and transform them into something positive: rituals that celebrate life, friendship and the community. Through fieldwork with the Wana people of Morowali, Central Sulawesi, Giorgio Scalici shows how music serves as a connection between the human world and the hidden world of spirits and emotion. By examining rituals such as the momago, the main Wana healing ritual, and the kayori, the funeral, this book investigates how music is used by the Wana to heal people, control emotions, reinforce the sense of community and to mark the cultural death of the community member. In this study, music transforms the pain of loss into a playful event that heals the community and assures its future. This book will be of interest to the wider academic study of religion, anthropology and ethnomusicology as it looks as at funerals as healing rituals for the community which lead the living and the dead through critical times.

Baker, Courtney R., ed. Slavery’s Suffering Brought to Light—New Orleans, 1834. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252039485.003.0002.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the abolitionist movement and the rise of physical sensation as a rhetorical theme. It interprets the term “image” in its post-nineteenth-century sense as identifying both the actual (“this really happened”) and the conventional (“this is what it looked like”). Although photography was not in place during all of the moments under investigation in this chapter, the clamor for visual proof is consistently evident. The chapter analyzes the Lalaurie affair of 1834—a scandal in which a white Creole woman named Delphine Lalaurie was found to have experimented on her slaves for her own wanton pleasure—to highlight a view of black humanity, as well as the power accorded to sight at this historical moment as a means to acquire knowledge. The encounters with the suffering bodies of enslaved blacks and the humane insight of these confrontations challenged core principles of slavery and, at moments, exposed the cracks in slavery's logic that would eventually lead to its abolition.

Abstract:
In late August 2015, international media outlets and cultural institutions reported that the Islamic State beheaded the Syrian scholar Khaled al-Asaad and destroyed the 1st-century CE Temple of Bel in Palmyra, Syria. The world was horrorstruck. Apart from the human tragedy, archaeologists and the international communities were shocked by the wanton destruction of ancient remains that had survived for millennia. However, warfare and ideological destruction contribute just a fraction of the ongoing devastation of our forebears’ traces. This book brings attention to the magnitude of the silent loss of cultural heritage occurring worldwide and the even more insidious loss of knowledge due to the lack of publication and preservation of original data, notes, plans, and photographs of excavated archaeological sites. Highlighting a growing sense of urgency to intervene in whatever way possible, this book provides readers with a non-technical overview of how archaeologists and other stakeholders are increasingly turning to digital methods to mitigate some of the threats to at-risk cultural heritage. This volume is a gateway to enhancing the scale and reach of capturing, analyzing, managing, curating, and disseminating cultural heritage knowledge in sustainable ways and promoting collaboration among scholars and stakeholder communities.
