Abstract:
This chapter provides an introduction to and analyses of relationships between music and dance in two dance practices from Western Europe: the first from early eighteenth-century France, the second from early nineteenth-century Vienna. The chapter introduces French dance notation and shows how it facilitates an analysis of the steps and music for a bourrée. The analysis offers insights into the musical grammar of the bourrée and the contribution that dance practice made to the construction of social relations in the court of Louis XIV. The second dance practice is that of the waltz, which had a prominent place in the social landscape of early nineteenth-century Vienna. Analyses of waltzes by Josef Lanner and Franz Schubert make clear the relationship between the music and steps of the waltz, as well as how composers adapted their music to the different social contexts within which the dance was performed.

Abstract:
In this interlude, the author reflects on her experience of dancing the last waltz of the evening with Leo, a retired physician who also happens to be her neighbor. She describes Leo as one of her favorite partners in ballroom dance. He has a somewhat unique, syncretic salsa dance style. As he and the author were dancing the last waltz of the night, David played a vocal number. She sang along, and Leo didn't seem to mind. The author claims that while dancing with Leo, she experienced a pleasurable moment of just disappearing, as is often the case when she smooth dances with him. She was awakened by the closing refrains of the song. As she moved toward him and they were poised together, they turned as one entity. They continued to turn together as the final cadence of the song sounded.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the development of pair skating. Skating with a partner of the opposite sex in which there is physical contact had its real beginning in England, bastion of combined skating. However, it was in the 1890s that hand-in-hand skating became fashionable and moved from the static confines of basic figures to continuous movement around a rink. The rigid English style still ruled supreme, but in that same decade the introduction of the first true skating waltz, which capitalized on speed and flow across the ice with partners in a true dance position, not just holding hands, dealt a death knell to hand-in-hand skating. The direction of couple skating changed rapidly and permanently when in 1895 the three-step waltz ushered in the era of ice dancing. As a competitive discipline at the international level ice dancing was many years in the future, but dances and steps from them provided from the beginning basic material employed in competitive programs for singles and pair skating.

Abstract:
Nearly a year after the fall of the Berlin Wall, East Germany was subsumed into the West German national structure. As a result, the distinct political systems, institutions, and cultures that characterized East Germany have nearly completely vanished. In some instances, this history was actively—and physically—eradicated by the unified Germany. This chapter works against the disappearance of East German culture by reconstructing the physicality of the walk across the border on the day of the opening of the Berlin Wall and two choreographic works depicting East German identities on stage. The initial re-creation of the choreography of a pedestrian movement provides a social, political, and methodological context that relates the two dance productions to the social movement of East German citizens. Both works take stances on the political situation in East Germany during and after the opening of the Berlin Wall in 1989, although one is by a West German artist, Sasha Waltz, and the other by East German choreographer Jo Fabian.
