Kaps, Klemens, and Andrea Komlosy. Zeitschrift für Weltgeschichte 22, no. 1 (January 1, 2021): 9–19. http://dx.doi.org/10.3726/zwg0120211.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article attempts to make three contributions. First contrary to the literature's critique of Wallerstein's world-system perspective, this article points out that Wallerstein has formulated a sophisticated class analysis. Second, this article argues that Wallerstein's class analysis is actually similar to Thompson's writings on class. Third, after pointing out the problems of the historical approach to class, this article utilizes the insights of Wallerstein and Thompson to develop a new class struggle analysis.

Abstract:
The article replies to the text of Immanuel Wallerstein published in PROKLA 133 (Dec. 2003), where Wallerstein argued that the end of American hegemony was imminent. Wallerstein’s reading of recent world history and his depiction of the trajectory and movement of social forces in the emerging world order is fundamentally criticised: His analysis is much too speculative and ignores fundamental and structural aspects of American power, including strategic capabilities, and their links to transnational political and class formations.

Stephens, John D., and Michael Wallerstein. "Industrial Concentration, Country Size, and Trade Union Membership." American Political Science Review 85, no. 3 (September 1991): 941–53. http://dx.doi.org/10.2307/1963857.

Full text
Abstract:
In his article, “Union Organization in Advanced Industrial Democracies” in the June 1989 issue of the Review, Michael Wallerstein advocated a model to account for cross-national differences in trade union organization rates. He argued that the size of the labor force provided the most important determinant of variation in union density. In this controversy, John Stephens takes issue with the operationalization of a key variable in Wallerstein's model—industrial infrastructure. Stephens reanalyzes the data using an alternative measure of this variable. His reanalysis supports his claim that in fact, the two variables yield results that are statistically indistinguishable. Wallerstein responds.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article examines the potentials of world-systems analysis (WSA) and uneven and combined development (UCD) for the history of nineteenth-century Habsburg Monarchy by critically engaging with Andrea Komlosy’s account of the Monarchy, written from the perspective of WSA. It argues that Komlosy does not provide a consistent WSA interpretation of the Monarchy’s history by trying to analyze the Monarchy as a world-economy in its own right, thus excluding geopolitical dynamics and the world-economy. Furthermore, core-periphery relations within the Monarchy are dealt with in a contradictory fashion. Crucially, the quite anomalous state formation is not accounted for. The problematic account of state formation, it is argued, is due to the limitations of WSA. By taking a closer look at the genesis of the Austro–Hungarian Compromise, the article claims that UCD is better suited for explaining state formation in the Monarchy.

Abstract:
By the turn of the 21st century the concept of globalization had earned its place in the social sciences and debate turned more squarely to the theoretical significance of globalization. Yet not all scholars were happy with the notion of globalization. Some claim that is merely a new name for earlier theories and concepts. Among those who reject new paradigmatic thinking on the current age is Immanuel Wallerstein, the world-renowned sociologist and ‘father’ of the world-system paradigm. This article is intended as an appraisal of Wallerstein’s œuvre in the context of the debate on global transformations in the late 20th and early 21st centuries and from the vantage point of the present author’s own critical globalization perspective. The first three parts summarize and assess Wallerstein’s theoretical system and his many contributions to macro, historical and comparative sociology, to development studies and international political economy. The fourth discusses Wallerstein’s assessment of the evolution of the world capitalist system in recent decades, including his views on the concept of globalization, and the fifth focuses on earlier and more recent critical appraisals of his work, including the present author’s own, in light of the recent transformations in world capitalism identified with globalization.

Abstract:
Purpose – Each day, many different people in different societies are striving within their daily work to advance society. Every society needs to create ideas for further development and in order to become recognised as developed. The purpose of this paper is to show how different cultures at different times created similar ideas and theories to develop their society. Design/methodology/approach – A comparison between the development theories of Ibn-i-Khaldun and Wallerstein's famous “world system theory” is undertaken to show that similar ideas of development were in existence even centuries before. Technically, seminar papers were posted and reviewed on an e-learning platform in order to reach such peer-reviewed assessment in a “Global Studies” curriculum. Findings – The paper shows that the similarity between all developed countries is a strong state and extensive economic activity in different areas among cooperative people. All of these three characteristics are measurable and visible in today's western societies, and also centuries before in other countries (the Golden Age of the Muslim World). Research limitations/implications – Limits to comparing the two development theories of Ibn-i-Khaldun with Wallerstein's world system theory arise because of the large gap in time and the big cultural differences between the authors of the two theories. There is, on one side, Ibn-i-Khaldun in the thirteenth century whose religion (Islam) played an important role in his development theory and on the other side there is a western author, Immanuel Wallerstein in the twentieth century. In Wallerstein's development theory, religion has almost no role. Another point is that Wallerstein's theory provides a guideline to almost all countries for reaching development but Ibn-i-Khaldun's target countries are the Muslim countries which were experiencing decline at his time. Originality/value – Unlike traditional approaches, the present analysis includes early scientific theories from non-European authors. Thus, one of the main objectives of “Global Studies” is fulfilled; namely a trans-disciplinary, globalised perspective.

The article summarizes the results of criticism of I. Wallerstein's model of peripheralization, carried out at different times by foreign researchers who used this model to interpret processes in pre-capitalist systems and societies. On this basis, the authors formulate a number of requirements for the subsequent development of a theoretical model of relations between the core and the periphery of the world-system approach of I. Wallerstein. The authors believe that the results of the study may be relevant for the analysis of societies undergoing a process of peripheralization in the post-Soviet space and, in particular, Russia.

This paper reconstructs the answers of Immanuel Wallerstein (1930-2019) on the tasks of strategic thinking, governance and action within the World Social Forum needed in order to achieve ?another world?. The main method used to achieve as much as possible exhaustive reconstruction of Wallerstein?s answers to the title questions concerning the strategic thinking, governance and action among the World Social Forum?s members, is the qualitative content analysis of 500 Wallerstein?s commentaries, from Commentary No. 1, published on Oct. 1 1998, to Commentary No. 500, published on July 1 2019, some three months before his death. This paper?s main aim is to induce like - thinking people within World Social Forum to carry on to best of their ability strategic thinking, governance and action within the WSF keeping in mind Wallerstein?s ideas on these themes, over two decades after the first meeting of WSF in 2001 in Porto Alegre and less than one year before the next WSF meeting in Mexico.

Abstract:

AbstractInHow the West Came to Rule, Alexander Anievas and Kerem Nişancıoğlu offer an alternative to both Political Marxism and world-systems analysis (WSA) by going beyond the nation-state as the unit of analysis in the former and the marginalisation of articulation and combination between modes of production in the latter. Their account also gives more room to non-European actors neglected in other interpretations of the rise of the West. However, I argue that their argument is much closer toWSAand that their critique of Wallerstein regarding Eurocentrism, the origins of capitalism and the role of wage labour in the capitalist world-system is problematic. Furthermore, Anievas and Nişancıoğlu do not offer a sufficiently rigorous definition of combination, leading to an overextension of the concept.

Abstract:
Since the death of Pierre Bourdieu, the leading contemporary sociologist of literature has arguably been Franco Moretti. Moretti’s distinctive contribution to the field has been his attempt to apply Immanuel Wallerstein’s world-systems theory to literary studies. Although Wallerstein traces the origins of the modern world-system back to the 16th century, Moretti focuses on the much shorter period since the late 18th century. This is also the historical occasion for the initial emergence of modern science fiction (SF). Andrew Milner has previously sketched out an ambitious model of the ‘global SF field’, which identified an original Anglo-French core, supplemented by more recent American and Japanese cores; longstanding Russian, German, Polish and Czech semi-peripheries; and a periphery comprising essentially the rest of the world. This article attempts to apply that model to the analysis of contemporary climate fiction.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This text is an attempt to lucidly present the intellectual biography and theoretical work of Immanuel Wallerstein, the main architect and exponent of world-systems analysis. Given that the entire Wallerstein’s work has been devoted to understanding the reality of the modern world-system as the fundament of every prudent action, this paper should simultaneously be read as a homage to one of the greatest names of the 20th century sociology, and as a reflexion on chaotic present and uncertain future of the world we live in. Having in mind his wide range of scholarly interests and a gargantuan oeuvre left as a legacy, we have selected four main topics discussed in Wallerstein’s work. After a concise review of Wallerstein’s intellectual biography in the introduction, the first part focuses on the methodological and epistemological postulates of world-systems theory. The second part discusses the issue known as the “long sixteenth century”, that is, the genesis of the capitalist worldeconomy, which is also the topic of the first volume of Wallerstein’s most important work The Modern World-System. The third part reviews the historical trajectory of antisystemic movements, from the Old Left in the 19th and the first part of the 20th century, to world revolution of 1968 as a turning point in their development, to modern varieties of these movements. The fourth part discusses the issue of rise and fall of the United States of America as a hegemonic power of the world-system.
