Abstract:
In "Discourse in the Novel," Mikhail Bakhtin tells us that "Every discourse presupposes a special conception of the listener, of his apperceptive background and the degree of his responsiveness." My study of Wallace Stevens's poetry examines Stevens's "conception of the listener"—in the form of his intratextual readers, their responsiveness, and the shapes that responsiveness takes—and attempts to formulate out of that examination Stevens's theory of reading embodied in his canon of poems.

Newlon, Courtney. "An Evaluation of Bull Trout Movement Dynamics in the Walla Walla River." DigitalCommons@USU, 2018. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/7361.

Full text
Abstract:
Bull trout are a fish species listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.Historically, they ranged from Northern California at the southernmost extent, into Canada at the northern most extent, and east into Nevada and Montana. Bull trout are highly migratory and require large, unfragmented habitats to persist and are thus highly susceptible to human induced land-use practices. The goal of my thesis was to obtain a better understanding of bull trout movement patterns in the Walla Walla River, Washington using complimentary techniques; Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT)technology and otolith microchemistry. PIT tags can be injected into a fish body cavity, similar to how pets are “chipped”, and as the fish swim through antennas placed in the river, their location and movements are be documented.Otolith microchemistry is a technique that is similar to analysis of tree rings. The otolith, a hard bony structure of a fish’s ear, develops over a lifetime and as the rings of the otolith are created the chemical signature in the water in which they live is recorded and can be compared to chemical makeup of water samples collected through the river system. Using these two techniques, I found that the age or size of a fish and the season are important factors to explain both a fish’s movements and where in the river a fish might be located at a given time. Knowing at what size, age and season a fish is attempting to migrate allows managers to provide the best possible river conditions (e.g., temperatures, flow) to allow for unimpeded migrations to occur and to foster conservation and recovery of bull trout populations.

Vinchesi, Amber Christine. "Assessing transportation impacts to alkali bees (hymenoptera| halictidae) and alfalfa seed production in the Walla Walla Valley." Thesis, Washington State University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3628892.

Full text
Abstract:

Alkali bees, Nomia melanderi, are native, solitary, soil–nesting bees commercially managed in southeastern Washington State. They nest in dense aggregations and are important pollinators of alfalfa produced for seed. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) proposed safety improvements to US Highway 12 through the Touchet– Lowden–Gardena alfalfa seed growing district, an area critical to alfalfa seed production. This includes northern realignment to accommodate a wider roadway and avoid impacting any towns. Relocation of the highway will bisect several N. melanderi nesting aggregations and alfalfa fields. The study has three objectives: 1) survey the population abundance of N. melanderi across the region by comparing two sampling techniques; 2) determine bee flight heights across roads; and 3) determine N. melanderi foraging range using transgenic pollen.

Regression was significant between the two population sampling methods. Mean emergence hole counts, mean prepupal counts, and the surface area of the nesting aggregations, were used to estimate the abundance of N. melanderi in each bee bed. We constructed a “vehicular bee sweeper” designed to capture insects at specific heights over the roadway. The majority of N. melanderi flew below 2.1 m when no other factors were considered, but environmental conditions like temperature and wind speed affected number and flight height of N. melanderi. To determine N. melanderi foraging distance, adults were collected from their nest sites, and pollen on their hind tibia was tested for the presence or absence of Roundup–®Ready alfalfa (RRA). The minimum foraging distance was 0.04 km and the maximum was 4.62 km. These distances suggest that N. melanderi will cross the highway for floral resources, increasing potential mortality.

Studying N. melanderi population abundance and flight characteristics allows us to understand the potential impacts of the proposed highway on bee populations and on alfalfa seed producers. The non–destructive quadrat method of sampling N. melanderi populations is robust compared to the destructive, labor-intensive, soil core method. Due to the low-flying nature and foraging distance of N. melanderi, vehicle strikes can be expected to cause mortality in bisected populations. Ultimately, recommendations will be made to highway designers to minimize and mitigate these effects.

Virtual currencies and mobile banking are technology advancements that are receiving increased attention in the global community because of their accessibility, convenience and speed. However, this popularity comes with growing security concerns, like increasing frequency of identity theft, leading to bigger problems which put user anonymity at risk. One possible solution for these problems is using cryptography to enhance security of Bitcoin or other decentralised digital currency systems and to decrease frequency of attacks on either communication channels or system storage. This report outlines various methods and solutions targeting these issues and aims to understand their effectiveness. It also describes Secure Bitcoin Wallet, standard Bitcoin transactions client, enhanced with various security features and services.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objective of this work is the fundamental physical study of individual isolated carbon nanostructures in order to address their intrinsic vibrational and optical properties and also to estimate and quantify the environmental effects. For these purposes, we synthesized individual single- and multi-walled carbon nanotubes by chemical vapour deposition method on dedicated substrates. The main aspect of the work involves the combined use of different experimental probes on the same individual nanostructures. We performed a complete structure analysis by electron diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy and the measurement of the Raman spectra on these individual nanostructures. Several important environmental effects were evidenced for the first time, e.g. the effect of mechanical coupling (van-der-Waals interaction) between the layers of double-walled carbon nanotubes leading to the change in the low-frequency Raman modes and the optical resonance conditions. Moreover the behaviour of high-frequency modes of double-walled tubes was also analysed and described. As a result of this work several experimental criteria for structure diagnostics of multi-walled carbon nanotubes were proposed.

Abstract:
Part 1, 'Introduction'. Begins with the chapter, 'General Background to Error Analysis'. A survey of the thesis is presented with a statement of the research objectives. Tbc chapter then goes on to demonstrate that error analysis was inspired by the generative linguistics movement of the 1960's which concentrated on the creative aspects of language acquisition. Generative linguistics was a reaction against the behaviourist-structuralist position. Error analysis itself was a reaction to the behaviourist contrastive analysis which held sway in the 1950's. To explain how error analysis first arose, an account of behaviourist psychology as pioneered by Skinner, amongst others, is provided, and its effect on second language learning is explored. Evidence is provided which contradicted behaviourist claims and supported Chomsky's mentalism which gradually superseded behaviourist theory in the field of second language acquisition. This eventually led to the idea of interlanguage being formulated by Selinker and a reappraisal of the significance of learners' errors by Corder. His ideas helped to lay the foundations of the error analysis movement which reached its height amongst EFL researchers during the 1970's and early 1980's. Corder rejected the idea that errors had only negative significance, being solely the result of the laziness of the learner or faulty teaching methods. Instead, he affirmed that errors were to be viewed in a positive light. This was so because learners progressed through processes of overgeneralization and regularization. Therefore, learners errors provided evidence, of their progress and could possibly reveal the 'internal syllabus' of second-language learners. Chapter 2 provides a survey of the language error literature from 1917 to 1995. Section I deals with written errors. Until the 196M the papers reviewed were mainly behaviourist in tenor. This was the case as their main purpose in identifying errors was the belief that they could be eradicated by the formulation of remedial exercises. From the 1950's, it was also believed that errors could be corrected by the devising of drills based upon the areas of perceived weakness. The language which received more attention than any other was English, both native and second language and as spoken or acquired by both children (hearing or deaf) and adults. Other languages surveyed include French, German, Russian, Spanish, Hebrew, and Irish. Section 2 of Chapter 2 gives a comprehensive survey of error analysis in Welsh. beginning in the 1980's. It was originally motivated by fears that the Welsh of primary level children who were fluent in the language (both native speakers and learners) was becoming progressively anglicized. This view was largely upheld by the research conducted and furthermore it was demonstrated that native-speaking children in Welsh-medium schools were assimilating to the interlanguage spoken by the L2 majority. Relatively little research had been conducted on the errors committed by adult learners. Gillian Evans of the Polytechnic of Wales had created a taxonomy of errors committed in the Adult Welsh 'O'Level but no research had been conducted on the errors of higher level learners. .I- Chapter 3 details the theory to be tested. It comprises a number of statistical hypotheses. These are as follows: (1) Welsh adult learners commit mainly local errors. (2) It is impossible to assign a cause to many of the errors. (3) Of the errors to which it is possible to assign a cause the majority are developmental. (4) There are more syntactic errors than lexical. (5) Women commit fewer errors than men. (6) Ile Welshness of the area where learners live does not affect the correctness of their written Welsh. The major hypothesis was that a longitudinal analysis of errors encompassing the Use of Welsh and Advanced Use of Welsh Written Tests would reveal a developmental pattern in the errors committed. Chapter 6 presents the results of the analysis. Approximately 135,000 words were analyzed, yielding some 14,000 lexical and grammatical errors. All the hypotheses were confirmed by these results. Ninety-six categories of error were created and the taxonomy was organized according to surface strategies as recommended by Dulay, Burt and Krashen. It was demonstrated that there was a general decrease in error frequency between Level 4 and Level 6, despite the hierarchy of written assignments. Chapter 7 comprises a detailed discussion of the results. It begins at the level of surface strategy and shows that the decrease in error frequency was evinced in each one of the surface strategies although the rate of decrease varied. It then goes on to discuss each error category in detail organized according to sub-samples (Use of Welsh, Advanced Level la, Advanced Level lb, Advanced Level 2). Firstly, Omissions of Major Constituents are discussed, followed by Omissions of Grammatical Morphemes. A new strategy is created to analyze the errors of Celtic languages, namely the Omission of Mutations, as they are syntactic errors but are neither major constituents nor grammatical morphemes. The chapter goes on to discuss the variation within the strategies of Double Marking and Simple Addition. However, Welsh departs from the universal pattern of error analysis in that no evidence was Found of Regularization Addition errors .Even so, examples were found of all three types of Misformations namely Regularization, Archi-forms and Alternating Forms. The last strategy to be discussed was the least prominent, namely Misordering, which included confusion of the normal and abnormal sentence order. The chapter concludes by revealing the rate of change in frequency of each error category. Fifty seven categories decreased between Use of Welsh and Advanced Level. Here the learners seem to be successfully internalizing the rules of the language items involved, with overgeneralization and language transfer being abandoned. This seems to represent the last stage of acquisition. Ile intermediate stage appears to comprise the seven error categories which exhibit no statistically significant rate change between the two examinations. These categories may well go on to decrease at the Post-A Level stage or fossilize. Lastly, 32 categories increased in frequency. These appear to represent the initial stage of acquisition, in which new language items (especially literary forms) have been introduced and overgeneralization has increased in the attempt to acquire the new rules. In this way, clues are given to the linguistic difficulties which learners experience during the Advanced Level course of study. It is hoped that the insights provided will assist those engaged in the formulation of a curriculum or syllabus for Level 5 and 6 learners Other practical applications of the research are discussed and the final chapter makes suggestions for further research.

Abstract:
As the use of mobile payment applications (apps) and electronic wallets (e-wallets)increases, so does the demand for a improved user experience when interactingwith these apps. The field of Human-Computer interaction (HCI) focuses onthe design, evaluation, and implementation of interactive computing systems forhuman use. One aspect of HCI is usability, i.e., the quality of the interactions witha product or system. This thesis investigates how an e-wallet can be designed to provide a high level ofusability by conforming to best HCI practices and by formative evaluation using aset of usability evaluation methods. The research process consisted of an initial literature study and developmentof a prototype, which was evaluated iteratively through Thinking-aloud-protocol(TAP) and a combination of performance measurements and questionnaire by achosen test group. By each iteration, the results of the performance measurements, as well as theverbal data improved. The most complex or difficult task, for the test subjectsto perform, was, according to the results, Pay via manual input. All goals wereachieved for all tasks except for the performance goal of a percentage of errorsbelow 5%. To conclude, it was clear that the test subjects had more trouble understandingthe concept of the e-wallet rather than navigating and completing tasks. Thedifficulties lay in understanding how currencies were stored and how transactionshappened. When developing this e-wallet we noticed that the most importantissue was to make new functions and concepts familiar to the user through relatingit to recognizable ideas.

Abstract:
Carabid beetles are found in a variety of Montana crops, although their impact on the food web is poorly known. To detect aphidophagy using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), carabids were fed a single aphid and allowed to digest for increasing time intervals. Aphidspecific PCR primers were used to amplify aphid DNA from carabid beetles. For the laboratory-fed beetles, PCR detection of aphidophagy decreased with longer digestion periods. Further, there were differences among genera in the proportion of fed beetles positive for aphid DNA at the tested digestion intervals. Field surveys of 273 individual carabid beetle gut contents, representing seven genera, found all genera surveyed in Montana cropping systems, except Microlestes and Pasymachus, positive for aphid DNA. Genera positive for aphid DNA were Calosoma, Harpalus, Pterostichus, Amara, Agonum, and Bembidion. The detectability of prey DNA in the context of predator size is discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
A general solution for the stress-deformation analysis of interconnected plates subjected to general loading conditions is developed. The solution is based on the assumptions of thin-walled plate theory and is limited to combinations of straight plates made of linearly elastic isotropic material. The principle of stationary potential energy is used in conjunction with series expansion for the displacement fields to formulate the equilibrium conditions and boundary conditions. In general, the differential equilibrium equations are coupled. A quasi-closed form solution for the displacement fields is nonetheless provided. The solution developed is successfully adopted to solve several example problems. Three of the problems involve individual plates, while six involve multiply connected plates. Comparisons with established finite element solutions demonstrate the ability of the model to accurately capture the behaviour with a remarkably small number of degrees of freedoms.

Abstract:
Drawing on Wallace Stevens' published poetry from 1923 to 1954 and various manuscript materials, this thesis sketches a portrait of the poet performing the particular task of putting an end to his work. As opposed to Whitman's ongoing process of revision, we want to emphasize Stevens' concern with finishing, not only the perfecting of individual poems but of the whole of his poetic output. The vague category of “late poetry” is therefore to be reexamined: from a neutral classification we want to reach a description of the final movement of Stevens' career as a contrived drama, the publication of The Collected Poems drawing the final curtain on poems which, as early as 1950, were concerned with endings and finitude, success and succession

Abstract:
With the rise of blockchain technology and cryptocurrency, secure e-wallets also become more important. But what makes an e-wallet secure? In this report, we compare different aspects of ewallets to see which alternatives are secure and convenient enough to be used. This report contains comparative analyses of different implementation for e-wallets. The problem area is divided into three smaller areas: Key storage, authentication, and recovery. These problem areas have defined criteria for what is considered good qualities in each respective area. The results show that for key storage, the best options are, Android’s keystore/IOS’ secure enclave, offline storage or a hybrid hot/cold storage. For authentication, the best alternatives proved to be BankID and local authentication through the phone’s OS. Good Recovery alternatives include recovery seeds that recover the whole e-wallet or using multiple keys for both signing and recovery. The proof of concept made for this project uses three different storage methods with the authentication methods for each one and with the possibility of recovery in case a key should be lost. The storage methods used are offline storage thought QR-codes, online storage with firebase and local storage with Android keystore or Secure enclave. Authentication is done with Facebook/Google sign in or local authentication.

Abstract:
The widespread use of smartphones and technological advances in near-field communication technologies are quickly transforming mobile payment systems. These technologies have made it possible for consumers to use their smartphones to pay for their purchases through various payments systems such as Apple’s iPay, MasterPass and V.me. These mobile payment systems, commonly referred to as mobile wallets, are designed to eliminate the need for consumers to carry multiple credit cards in their wallets, thereby making it more convenient for consumers to shop. Mobile wallets represent a major advance in mobile marketing because they are another major channel through which marketers can better reach and serve customers in a very personalized way. Realizing the potential benefits of mobile wallets for both marketers and consumers depends on the speed of adoption of this new technology. This study examines the factors that influence consumers’ decision to adopt mobile wallets. Drawing on the theoretical technology adoption and diffusion literatures, a model of the factors that influence mobile wallet adoption is proposed and tested with data collected from 530 respondents. The purpose of this study was to develop a new technology acceptance model by combining TAM with IDT and exploring the factors that affect people’s behavioral intentions to use Mobile Wallet. Based on our proposed model, we explored the relationships among three innovative characteristics with PU and PEU with subjective norm which affect individuals’ intention for using Mobile Wallet. The results of this study show that some factors significantly influenced people behavioral intention to use Mobile Wallet. The effect of the trialability on the perceived usefulness is supported in this study. Subjective norm and awareness are correlated with the users’ perceived ease of use in Mobile Wallet. The findings suggest extended model of TAM for the acceptance of the Mobile Wallet can help industry players who are looking to build public demand and increase usage of Mobile Wallet.

Abstract:
This research has significantly advanced the knowledge and understanding of the structural behaviour and design of vertical load bearing members of aluminium facades subject to wind actions, based on full-scale wind pressure tests and extensive advanced numerical simulations. It has shown that the design approaches used in the industry may result in either conservative or unsafe designs of vertical load bearing members, and thus developed improved design guidelines. Further, it has demonstrated that advanced numerical simulations can be used for economical designs of these facade members.

Full text
Abstract:
Single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were dispersed in mineral oil and epoxy resin. The magnetorheological properties of these dispersions were studied using a parallel plate rheometer. Strain sweeps, frequency sweeps, magneto sweeps and steady shear tests were conducted in various magnetic fields. G', G", h* and ty increased with increasing magnetic field, which was partially attributed to the increasing degree of the alignment of nanotubes in a stronger magnetic field. The SWNT/mo dispersions exhibited more pronounced magnetic field dependence than SWNT/ep and MWNT/mo counterparts due to their much lower viscosity. The alignment of SWNTs in mineral oil increased with rising nanotube concentration up to 2.5vol% but were significantly restricted at 6.41vol% due to nanotube flocculation.

Abstract:
The goal of this work was to apply an operable green façade wall system in order to analyze the benefits of vegetative surfaces in relation to hot arid urban climates. A second layer of information was also analyzed to provide an alternative to electricity. This method was used to actuate the operable green façade passively to enhance sustainable environmental strategies. Carbon emissions, temperature and relative humidity were evaluated in a hot arid climate on a kinetic green wall system physical scale model. Computer simulation provided insight to daylight, shading and solar irradiance within a mock up building. The results of these factors may be a useful tool to implement in building design for these climatic zones.

Full text
Abstract:

This thesis aims to develop a comprehensive methodology for capacity prediction of thin-walled welded aluminium structures. Through material testing, model choice and calibration, numerical simulations and experimental verification, a procedure and a combination of modelling techniques using shell elements were obtained for such structures.

Experimental and numerical studies were performed to investigate the structural capacity of quasi-statically loaded fillet-welded connections. The data of two other series of experiments were adopted from a previous study and were used to verify the modelling methodology developed in this study. These experiments are beam-tocolumn joints subjected to tension and welded members subjected to four-point bending.

In the numerical study, the yielding and work hardening parameters for the weld, HAZ and base material were identified through material tests in the current study and available data from previous experiments. Shell elements in LS-DYNA are used throughout this thesis. With relatively large elements, the numerical analyses were generally found efficient and accurate in prediction of ultimate load, but structural ductility was over-estimated. When using smaller elements, the results were seen to be mesh-dependent and fail to predict the structural performance properly. This problem was solved by introducing a nonlocal approach to plastic thinning in the HAZ and weld. Several case studies showed that mesh sensitivity was greatly reduced. Techniques of representing the thickness variation in fillet welds, contact between coarse and dense meshed regions were used and were shown to improve the analyses in terms of efficiency or accuracy.

A simple analytical method was introduced to compute the mechanical response of a welded aluminium sheet under uniaxial tensile loading. Despite certain limitations it predicts the performance of the sheet reasonably well. These analyses gave a rapid engineering assessment to the influence of HAZ modelling on prediction of the structural capacity of a welded connection, especially with respect to its ductility.

Abstract:
Mobile payments are an emerging trend and an alternative to traditional payment methods. Mobile payments involve the usage of the mobile phone to handle credit transfers during purchase of goods and peer to peer money transfers referred to as mobile wallet service, instead of depending on bank cards and cash. In this scenario, while the mobile wallet industry still being in its infancy there exist a few drivers of mobile wallet solutions aiming to create a de-facto standard in the mobile market. The major drivers of mobile wallets can be attributed to Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), banks and web based companies.   In this report we would compare the motive behind every driver’s intent to enter the mobile payment market and the challenges associated in providing the wallet service to the market and assimilate the similarities and differences that exist among them. The key technical aspect behind the comparative analysis involves a standard set of factors on which the analysis would be based upon. The results obtained from the comparative analysis emphasizes on the significance behind the origin of industry of each mobile payment driver. The results also enlighten the varied yet partially coinciding objectives of each mobile payment driver.   The approach adopted to conduct this research is primarily through analyzing different origin industry based mobile wallet drivers, and then generalizing the data based on the researched use case models. The comparative analysis performed is based on the generalized data obtained by studying the use case under each mobile payment driver. Further, to predict the future marketing strategy of each driver, ansoff matrix is employed to devise the roadmap. Finally the main objective of the investigation is answered, which is finding out the reasons behind the entry of different industry origin drivers into the mobile payment market and the challenges faced by them.
