Abstract:
Sustainability is quickly becoming one of the hottest topics among green conscious consumers, as well as managers looking to capitalize on the growth of such interests. Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, is currently marketing itself as a pioneer in sustainability, particularly in the retail industry. With innovations such as a Sustainability Index that measures the environmental and social impacts of products stocked by Wal-Mart, the company is currently marketing their efforts as being exceptional among “big box” retailers. However, few studies have tested those claims to determine if they are accurate. The purpose of this research is to gather data about Wal- Mart’s sustainability impacts and determine whether the marketed claims about sustainability programs are as far-reaching as the retailer claims.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the impact of a mega-store on the existing businesses in a specific area--Magazine Street in New Orleans. The potential mega-store is a 200,000 square foot Wal-Mart Supercenter that is part of the retail component of the St. Thomas housing re-development. The focus of this project is the retail competition that might be generated by this mega-store. Businesses were studied and placed into categories as either direct or indirect competitors to the mega-store. Previous research identified certain categories of store types that could be impacted (either positively or negatively) by the location of national stores in their communities. These categories were used to determine the impact that Wal-Mart might have on businesses on Magazine Street. Business owners were surveyed to determine how they thought they would be impacted. In the opinions of the business owners, the overall impact that a Wal-Mart would have on Magazine Street businesses would be negative. The surveys do show, however, mixed attitudes among the Magazine Street business owners toward Wal-Mart's coming.

Bin, Ali Mohamed. "The Islamic doctrine of Al-Wala' wal Bara' (Loyalty and Disavowal) in modern Salafism." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/9181.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the Islamic concept of Al-Wala’ wal Bara’ (Loyalty and Disavowal) in modern Salafism referred to here as WB. The research is divided into two parts. Part One introduces the phenomenon of modern Salafism and the concept of WB (Chapter One). It also demonstrates how the Quran, particularly its sixtieth chapter (Surah Al-Mumtahanah) and the concept of Millat Ibrahim (Religion of Abraham) play an important role in formulating the modern Salafi concept of WB (Chapter Two). Part Two discusses the realities and complexities of the concept. First, the concept in Wahhabism, whose adherents form the majority of modern Salafis, and whose tradition is believed to have influenced and shaped modern Salafism, is discussed (Chapter Three). The complexities of WB are described as the research recognizes the diversity or “spectrum” of the concept in modern Salafism, which ranges from what might be termed “very mild” to “very extreme” (Chapter Four). The research shows that one of the main reasons for this diversity is the different Salafi orientations or the backgrounds from which modern Salafis emerge. This is proven through analyzing the writings on WB by Salafis of purist, politico and Jihadi backgrounds – a specific categorization of modern Salafis used for the purpose of this research (Chapter Five). The analysis is conducted by mainly observing the role of WB within their intellectual systems. Through this analysis, it is concluded that a particular Salafi orientation has an effect on the style of writing and presentation of the concept by modern Salafis. This reflects the position of WB in modern Salafism as being fluid and multi-dimensional. The research then, aims to explore the centrality, breadth and complexity of the WB concept in modern Salafism, and proves that WB in modern Salafism is not static but flexible and dynamic. The significance of the research lies in the fact that understanding modern Salafi conceptions of WB is an urgent priority in the lives of Muslims today. This understanding is critical, as Muslims increasingly live as minority communities across the globe and WB has specific implications for whether (and how) Muslims can live with non-Muslims. The research concludes that the consequences of applying the modern Salafi concept of WB are serious – WB generally promotes a way of life that is insular and hostile towards non-Muslims and this, it might be argued, is at variance with more tolerant, inclusive nature of Islam.

Abstract:
This case study examines how Wal-Mart's global public relations activities have improved and are successful. Quantitative and qualitative triangulation methodology was used to create greater balance in the results. The case study illustrates Wal-Mart's success in both the use of advertising as a public relations tool, and its strong, improved media relationship building. Additionally, through the qualitative research, a list of suggested attitude and character traits was conceived. This study illuminates how the media, government and Wal-Mart are each able to control information and how each set and respond to the agenda in California. Study findings relate the use of advertising, law of least denomination, a "fair share" of product, and accessibility. Wal-Mart was unsuccessful with getting its message out through traditional media outlets, so it used advertising to enhance public relations efforts. The law of least denomination works! Wal-Mart challenges the capacity of all retailers to organize their own economic life. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Abstract:
Generating a phonetic transcription of the speech waveform is one method which can be applied to continuous speech recognition. Current methods of labelling a speech wave involve the use of techniques based on spectrographic analysis. This paper presents a computationally simple method by which some phonemes can be identified primarily by their shapes. Three shapes which are regularly manifested by three phonemes were examined in utterances made by a number of speakers. Features were then devised to recognise their patterns using finite state automata combined with a checking mechanism. These were implemented in the Wave Analysis Language (WAL) system developed at the University of Canberra and the results showed that the phonemes can be recognised with high accuracy. The resulting shape features have also demonstrated a degree of speaker independence and context dependency.

Nelson, Angela. "Assessing the Effect of Wal-Mart in Rural Utah Areas." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2011. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2779.

Full text
Abstract:
Walmart and other “big box” stores seek to expand in rural markets, possibly due to cheap land and lack of zoning laws. In August 2000, Walmart opened a store in Ephraim, a small rural town in central Utah. It is of interest to understand how Walmart's entrance into the local market changes the sales tax revenue base for Ephraim and for the surrounding municipalities. It is thought that small “Mom and Pop” stores go out of business because they cannot compete with Walmart's prices, leading to a decrease in variety, selection, convenience, and most importantly, sales tax revenue base in areas surrounding Ephraim. This shift in sales tax base is assessed using mixed models. It is found that the entrance of Walmart in Sanpete County has a significant change on sales tax revenue, specifically in the retail industry. A method of calculating the loss for each city is discussed and a sensitivity analysis is performed. This project also documents what has been done to assemble the data set. In addition to discussing the assumptions made to clean the data, explanations of area and industry definition exploration are explained and defended.

Abstract:
Wal Mart, which contains nationâ s largest private employers (1.2 million workers), sellers of retail goods($280 billion), and owner of corporate real estate(911 million square feet), is now locally and globally getting more dominant. Its simple but straight forward strategy is enough to make customers' pockets open and buy goods. However, these strategies are also getting bumped into the risks for high quality oriented markets which have been targeted for upper income class. Furthermore, on the reason that maintains enormously occupied box storage concept outside the town, Wal Mart is blamed for making the town more boundless and uncharacteristic as well as killing many retail shops in downtown. Architecturally. reconsidering Wal Mart to be more distinctively balancing to proper urban issues and practical designs is now more imperative than ever. Therefore, this thesis work will be new grope of possibilities of that Wal Mart can be futurally constructive being more friendly approached to the town and communities in a revitalization view of rural towns.

Bonakele, King Tembinkosi. "Entry of Wal-Mart into South Africa : a stakeholder management perspective." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/25419.

Full text
Abstract:
The growing importance of emerging markets in the global economy leads many multinationals (MNEs) to explore and expand into them. Saturation and slow growth in home markets, coupled with rising incomes in emerging markets, has also accelerated retail internationalisation. These markets are generally unfamiliar to the predominantly western firms, and they come with intractable social problems, where resultant stakeholder activism abounds. The purpose of this study was to investigate stakeholder management during entry of a retailer, Wal-Mart, into an emerging market, South Africa, in order to draw lessons that could be of use to other MNEs seeking to enter similar emerging markets. The method used for the study was a qualitative archival analysis that relied on publicly available sources, namely the regulatory bodies, parliament, press releases and the print media. The research found that the key stakeholders during the entry of Wal-Mart into South Africa were the government and trade unions. Government and trade unions were concerned that Wal-Mart’s entry would lead to an increase in imports and displace local producers, in turn worsening South Africa’s unemployment crisis. It was also feared that Wal-Mart would seek to change the existing labour regime in order to marginalise trade unions and lower labour standards. The research found that stakeholder management was poor and highlights the importance of integrating stakeholder management strategy into the broader entry strategy into developing markets.

Abstract:

The unwriten rules of personal communication (let's call them "howdy" rituals) occupy an amazing amount of company time".

The Rites and Rituals in the Corporate Culture of Wal Mart Supercenter. Study of case for the measurement of the Corporate Culture through the Rites and Rituals observed in Wal Mart Supercenter not. 2346 in Mexico

When is spoken of corporate culture generally this is confused with "philosophy", "Ideology" and including "identity" of business, is mentioned always as an inon material concept, represented only in the psique of the individuals of the business. The bibliographical revision to the respect, has helped us to discover what we consider an empty one in the cultural investigation of the organizations: the majority of the authors that speak of corporate culture center its attention in the cultural change being based for it, almost always in the Auditoría Cultural developed by Schein ..

In our investigation we intend to give to the corporate culture material character for it we consider necessary to believe that this can be measured or classified. With regard to its classification we have found already a tipology of the corporate culture and the elements that compose it. With regard to the measurement of the time that is invested in culture, of all the authors revised are few the ones that treat this theme: Tom Peters mentions that a 97% of the job man hours are lost in meetings, affirmation with the one that differ since a figure seems exaggerated and the same Deal and Kennedy that literally affirm: "The unwriten rules of personal communication (let' s call Rituals) occupy go amazing amount of company time".

With this investigation, we intend to undertake the theme of the corporate culture as a medible concept. The elements that compose the corporate culture are various (myths, legends, values, heroes, rites and rituals, etc.) we have determined to take alone one of them for complying with ours objective, thus, we have determined to base our investigation in the Rites and Rituals of an organization. With it, as already we have indicated previously, we intend to verify that the corporate culture can be classified and more still, measurement in numerical terms thanks to its elements, in this case, and as already we have mentioned it, we will utilize for it the Rites and Rituals.

Various retailers like Wal-Mart, Target, and Albertsons have announced their mandates asking their top suppliers to become RFID enabled beginning 2005. Meeting the mandate has become a sort of cost of doing business with Wal-Mart for suppliers. The objective of this thesis is to look for ways of meeting the mandate and preventing it from just becoming a cost of doing business with Wal-Mart. The thesis explores the various options available to suppliers and identifies the cost and benefit associated with each option and develops an evaluation methodology for the various options.

Lord, Laura. "Dialectical tensions between glocalization and grobalization for Wal-Mart in the United States." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2010. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/4561.

Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative analysis examines Wal-Mart managers' perspectives of the strategies that the U.S. corporation has implemented in order to increase its sales and profits at more than 4,000 stores in local U.S. communities. Two theoretical paradigms are specifically used: glocalization and grobalization. The former refers to cultural adaptation; the latter means standardization. The ultimate goal of the researcher is to identify the dialectical tensions between those two current forms of globalization. In-depth, face-to-face, qualitative interviewing of ten Wal-Mart managers in Central Florida allowed the researcher to actually comprehend managers' perspectives, gather fresh data, and construct a final product to enlighten readers on the current Wal-Martization of the United States. Throughout the data reduction process, four key themes surfaced as the most relevant to the initial research questions: (1) Awareness of Glocalization as Key to Success, (2) Grobalization Strategies Implemented, (3) Centralization as a Pattern of Grobalization, and (4) Organizational Socialization. Overall, it was found that Wal-Martization is a process that requires complex strategies and efforts to match the contemporary conditions of globalization. Meeting the needs of local Wal-Mart stores varies from one geographical location to the next. While, by definition, grobalization is a reversal of the meaning of glocalization, this study has revealed that part of Wal-Mart's phenomenal success is to be both grobalizing and glocalizing. Wal-Mart offers its customers the opportunity of consuming locally (e.g., Hispanic products, Mediterranean food), globally (e.g., universal U.S. merchandise), or both simultaneously (like products and traditions found in Orlando stores). In this sense, both glocalization and grobalization are effective for the successful Wal-Martization of U.S. communities.

The natural landscape is a depository of natural processes at work--water flows and erodes earth; winds blow and deposit sands. The earth's surface reveals former and current environmental forces, many of which take millennia to construct. Many times, however, human development interrupts these complex interactions between earth forces. Current development for the most part is completely blind to natural processes, which in the long term often creates exponential complications for the environment and human settlements. This thesis seeks to reveal natural processes at work in the environment through infrastructure elements and architectural form . As increasing pressure is placed upon undeveloped tracts of land in our rural communities, development proposals that work in conj unction with and not against natural processes becomes increasingly salient. Such development offers intriguing and challenging design opportunities in the context of finding a pragmatic middle ground between economically viable development and utopian ideals of environmental management. This thesis is a point of departure that programmatically seeks to offer a symbiotic relationship between seemingly disparate activities, specifically a Wal-Mart development and a department of natural resources complex. Issues of stormwater management and quality are explored through a water management system in a proposed commercial/retail development for the Wal-Mart corporation. A Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources administration office, water quality management research facility and an intersecting bike/recreation trail serve to elucidate the pedagogy influencing the direction of this investigation.

McGee, Paula L. "The Wal-Martization of African American Religion: T.D. Jakes and Woman Thou Art Loosed." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2012. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cgu_etd/70.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is an ideological critique of the New Black Church model of ministry, with T.D. Jakes and Woman Thou Art Loosed (WTAL) as a case study. T.D. Jakes is an African American televangelist who pastors The Potter’s House, a supermegachurch in Dallas, Texas. He is the quintessential example of a New Black Church pastor—a religious entrepreneur with several successful faith brands. WTAL is by far his most successful brand. Unashamed of his capitalist success, with an empire estimated to be worth $100 million dollars, Jakes says that it is occupational discrimination for him not to reap the benefits of the American dream. This dissertation identifies what has happened to the brand and Jakes’s ministry as “the Wal-Martization of African American Religion.” As a theoretical concept, Wal-Martization speaks to both the ideology and process that explains the generational differences between the New Black Church and the Black Church. It also is indicative of the branding and storytelling at every level of representation of the New Black Church. Jakes and New Black Church pastors are successful because they blur the lines between sacred and secular when they combine their vocations of pastor and entrepreneur. In this dissertation, I propose a cultural studies approach and a two-fold theological method for scholars to study these popular preachers. The method combines James McClendon’s Biography as Theology and Paul Tillich’s definitions of theology and theological norm from Systematic Theology. The method is a collaborative effort between the academic theologian and preacher. The scholar uses Biography as Theology to study the preacher (Jakes), and the second part of the method, Brand as Theology and Theological Norm, is where the scholar uses qualitative research methods to study the brand (WTAL). I define theologies of prosperity as contextual theologies of empire on a continuum that affirm it is God’s will and a believer’s right to obtain health and wealth by using Scripture and rituals like seed-faith giving and positive confession. Because these popular preachers offer adherents existential explanations for suffering (health and wealth), and prescriptions for liberation, I describe theologies of prosperity as theodicy and contemporary liberation theology. However, unlike traditional liberation theologies, these theologies do not have a preferential option for the poor. Instead, Jakes and other New Black Church pastors only offer adherents a pseudo-liberation. In essence, the stories of liberation that Bishop Jakes tells in his brands do not actually empower women, ideologically these stories only encourage women to stay loyal to his brand, become covenant ministry partners, and to buy more products. Jakes and New Black Church pastors are from the Second Gilded Age, they encourage women to pursue individual success within an oppressive system. Similar to Russell Conwell and other celebrity clerics from the First Gilded Age, Jakes and these pastors inadvertently blame the victims for their poverty and for not reaping the benefits of the American Dream, which according to prosperity preachers is available to all.

Park, Thomas Mun Su. "Transnational retailers and corporate real estate management : cases of Wal-Mart, Carrefour, and TESCO." Thesis, University of Reading, 2017. http://centaur.reading.ac.uk/74803/.

Full text
Abstract:
To enter foreign markets in unfamiliar countries and succeed, transnational retailers (TNRs) should focus on addressing various questions such as when, why, where and how to enter host countries in sequential staged processes: pre-entry, entry and post-entry (expansion and embedding stages). This study has following objectives: To identify the main factors and general strategies for long-term performances in different stages; To suggest differential strategies for catching-up with and overtaking indigenous retailers; To determine the reasons for exit and divestment of Walmart and Carrefour in 2006, and TESCO in 2016 from South Korea, and the reasons for the entries and losses of E-Mart and Lotte-Mart in China. This Ph.D. thesis examines and demonstrates the relationship between various selections and long-term performance of retailers in four chapters for verifying the study purposes. There still exists a lack of empirical research in the sequential corporate real estate (CRE) path of expansion in pre-entry, entry, expansion, and embedding stages. Chapter 3 aims to verify the relationships between LERs and time selection of retailers and stores, and discusses the time selection and late entrant advantages (LEAs). The survival of LERs and stores is influenced by the time selection in the pre-entry stage. Chapter 4 is analyzes the subject of market share influenced by the paths of CRE expansion of TNRs in the subsequent stage and identifies TNRs' reasons and motives to enter a host country in the entry stage. Chapter 5 verifies and analyzes how this survival is influenced by the location selection and CRE expansion in the expansion stage. The results of hypotheses testing in this study show the following relationship both survival long-term performance and CRE expansion of TNRs in the expansion stage. Chapter 6 has verified what influence that retailer's store choice paths have on the CRE values in the embedding stage and also determines the reasons for sample retailers' exit and losses from host countries. This dissertation has contributed to CRE path analysis and CRE expansion of retail internationalization theories in terms of OLI model and CREM. This work focuses on (1) CRE path analysis, (2) business decisions including those related to early or late entry into the market and channel strategy, (3) sequential CRE expansion: pre-entry, entry and store choice, expansion, settling and embedding stages, and (4) exit strategies. This study attempted to identify various aspects of TNRs' events and chapters added to our knowledge regarding international retail business expansion, survival of TNRs, and eventually how to catch up with indigenous retailers in the local markets. For overcoming their own disadvantages, retailers should choose, match, and focus on the most important selection factors: time, location, and management.

The focus of this study is to provide insight and additional understanding of the site selection processes employed by Wal-Mart in the United States. The research studies Wal-Mart from a national perspective and investigates the patterns of retail store expansion across the United States from 1990 to 2005. The study employs the use of a continuous Poisson model to check for significant clustering, and a single and multiple correlation analysis to identify the types of relationships that exist between retail stores and location. The results of the study make apparent several distinct patterns of retail store dispersion within the United States between the years 1990 to 2005.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis examines the productive and reproductive experiences of discount department store workers. More specifically, I investigate how female and male Wal-Mart employees reproduce and resist their spatial, social and economic relations, both inside their paid workplace, and outside, in their homes and community. I examine the history of discount department stores and workers; the role of place in influencing workers' experiences; the spatial, social and economic divisions of labor in the paid workplace, home and community; and specific acts of reproduction and resistance on the part of my co-workers. I used covert participant observation and informal interviews in order to learn about Wal-Mart workers paid and unpaid work experiences. I was employed for eight months as a part-time salesclerk by Wal-Mart. This enabled me to observe the various spatial, social and economic relations at work within the store, and it allowed me to hear about my co-workers' experiences outside the paid workplace, in the course of everyday conversations.

Extensive research work has been conducted on the topic of collaboration in supply chain management, but the more general topic of governance in supply networks has never truly been addressed. This research proposes to achieve three connected objectives. The first objective is to define the concepts of governance and supply network in a consistent and non value based way. These concepts have been, to some extent, clouded respectively by an extensive focus on collaboration and an indistinct terminology ("value networks", "supply networks", "value chains", "supply chains" and the less common "netchains"). The second objective is to study the case of Wal-Mart as a generally recognized governance best practice. The main focus will be on (i) the relation between the company's pricing strategy and its supply chain strategy, (ii) the enforcement of investments in supply chain technology throughout the network and (iii) the risks and benefits structure of the governance model. The third objective is to propose a practical framework for the study of governance in supply networks. This framework will be presented in the form of a roadmap for the study of other best practices in the field. It will then be retroactively applied to the case of Wal-Mart in order to confirm both (i) its validity and usefulness as a research tool and (ii) the intuition that the pricing strategy is, in the particular case, the critical enabler of the governance model for the entire supply network.

Abstract:
This research try to show that phenomenon islamic is not recent, because different political and religious movements existed with coming of islam. What is new is their forms of action and organisation that evolved with the time and space. Indeed, the majority of islamic movements evolvy towards the integration in the political system : they want to be like party. I want to show also that the islamic phenomenon is complex, because it consist of many dimensions : existential, spiritual and religious. My text include three part : the first part talk about typology of moroccan islamic. The second part is concerning their form of organisation, their structure. In the last part, my research take an interest in the different type of action

Abstract:

Abstract:
Al-Mas'udi (m. 345 956) is considered as one of the most eminent Muslim historians. His wide travels procured him with knowledge abundant and unequalled, which, combined witch his vast reading, gave his literary works very big scientific value. Especially, his method of writing the history is remarkable because it is essentially empirical. Our study is centered on the tanbib, but we had to examine thoroughly our present study based on the constant comparison between the tanbith and the muruj. These two books are inseparable because they enlight the contents each other. We are content in this opinion, of great importance, in order to approach the scientific world of mas'udi : his life, his works, his sources, the general characters of the tanbih compared with those of the muruj, his method of the tanbih as for the histories preislamic and Islamic, his Shiite thinking, his mu'tazilite tendancy, his profoundly religious feelings toward the non-Muslim religions. And then, we'll translate and annotate about one hundred pages chosen of the tanbih relative to the history of Islam

This dissertation paper is based on the decision of the Wal-Mart cases in respect to competition law, mergers and acquisition in Namibia. Owing to the fact that Namibian law is mostly derived from South African law, the exploration and analysis will be based on both Wal-Mart cases in Namibia and South Africa in respect of the subject matter with specific particularity on the significance of the court’s judgment to competition law development in Namibia. The paper will also contain an exposition of the High Court and Supreme Court’s judgment in Namibia as well as the judgment of the South African Court on the same subject respectively. This is aimed at providing an in-depth understanding of the approaches taken by the two courts with respect to mergers and also to derive guidelines from the interpretation of the court in South Africa owing to the fact that the court in South Africa has successfully and efficiently dealt with the same issues many times compared to the Namibian courts. The guidelines that will be looked at will be based on how the courts in Namibia and South Africa have applied and interpreted the provisions within the Act pertaining to statutory granting or refusal of mergers in the sphere of competition law with specific reference to the question of public interest. An analysis on the respective judgments will be provided.

Abstract:
This thesis presents an analysis of the potential of RFID-technology with a special focus on implementations at retailers. By analysing the RFID-roll outs of Wal-Mart and Metro the thesis outlines the necessary characteristics of a retail supply chain to successfully implement RFID. The changes in a retail supply chain as a consequence of an RFIDimplementation are summarized and a detailed comparison with the two case studies is given. It shows that Wal-Mart's and Metro's supply chain correlate to a great extent with the typology beneficial to a successful RFID-implementation. Nevertheless, a conclusion on the success or failure of the roll-outs can not be drawn yet. Future developments will very much be dependent on the widespread implementation of RFID in other companies and industries and on the acceptance by the public. (author's abstract)

Abstract:
The study Demographics of Central Indiana Wal-Mart and Target Stores for Analysis of Intended Consumers and Store Locations sought to answer whether or not each store chose locations based upon their demographic needs. Through the use of flow charts a methodology was derived and then completed using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Business Analyst software from ESRI. Data for income, age, education, distance, drive time, market penetration, city demographics and businesses were broken down into customer profiles, market analysis and proximity analysis categories. These were used to compile maps and graphs for final analysis. The data from the maps and graphs were then compared from one store to another and a conclusion was made about whether or not each store did a good job of locating near its average intended potential customers.

Abstract:

As India grows, driven by its success in information technology and services, there is another revolution waiting to happen in the Retail sector dependent on whether the Government of India can unshackle the various inefficiencies that are keeping this industry constrained. Retail in India is estimated at nearly US$ 400 billion and is growing at a CAGR of 9 percent (AT Kearney GRDI 2010). 96 percent of this sector remains un-organized and constitutes a workforce that have taken to self-employment for daily subsistence due to an overcrowded agriculture sector and lack of employment opportunities for lesser skilled workers in the manufacturing or services sectors. Food and groceries form nearly 60 percent of India's retailing followed by, among others, clothing and footwear at a distant 9 percent of retail. Despite the size of this market, retail and its food supply chain remains unorganized and inefficient. A lack of investment, technology and process control in the agriculture supply chain leads to tremendous waste accounting for nearly 25-30% of fruits and 10% of grains produced. Also, the related and supporting industries for food processing, cold chains and crafts remain nascent. In a grim reflection on the situation, a politician in India recently remarked that Indian consumers buy shoes in air-conditioned stores but food on the streets. Despite this scathing but accurate comment, the debate on whether to organize retail remains unresolved. This debate is further complicated by intellectual and political debate on the impact of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), by large international retailers like Wal-Mart, on the fate of small retailers. Interestingly, both these questions have been on the table of policy makers in India for more than 15 years and the Government has so far only allowed some FDI in 'single-brand' retailing and 'wholesale trading' of retail goods. While the incumbent Congress party led Government has voiced many reasons to organize retail and allow FDI in multi-brand retailing, public opinion in response to a discussion paper released by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) - Ministry of Commerce & Industry - has been negative. In my quest to decipher whether India should organize and allow FDI in multi-brand retail, I have analyzed all the opinions received by the DIPP. I posit that the data is skewed and not sufficient to form the basis of a policy decision. I have also conducted an extensive literature review on the impact of Wal-Mart on small retailers to understand the potential impact it can have on India. Despite the concerns, I conclude that this change can be managed to India's advantage and that opening of the retail sector to FDI is an imperative, not an option.

Consumption is regarded as a social encoder, a setting where identities are formed and reaffirmed. As such, the study herein intends to investigate the cultural and economic ramifications of the consumption phenomenon, with specific focus on the retail. The major goal was to analyze the consistency or inconsistency of the discursive approach upheld by retailing chain Wal-Mart, which is based on the principles of sustainability. Thus, the core theme of the study herein is the institutional discourse of retailing chain Wal-Mart in terms of its discursive approach towards sustainable consumption. Having the retail industry’s discursive practices as the object of study, and with Wal-Mart standing as one of the icons of consumption, we have strived to question the possibility of a real and concrete stake in sustainability, since the retail is so marked by the idea of programmed obsolescence. The study herein strived to find out to what extent Wal-Mart’s discourse, waging on sustainable consumption, may be viable, since the very nature of that chain, as well as its past relationships with its employees, suppliers and communities, all point to a different direction.

Motaouakal, Abdelouahad. "Al-Adl wal-Ihsan : an explanation of its rise and its strategy for social and political reform in Morocco." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/14880.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the rise of al-Adl wal-Ihsan in the early 1980s, its development, its attitude towards a number of Islamic and contemporary issues, and its strategy to take root in society and press for social and political reform in Morocco. The aim is to provide an account that reflects as far as possible what is perceived to be the true nature of al-Adl wal-Ihsan and, more importantly, to identify the factors behind its rapid growth and its ability to become the largest organized Islamic force in the country despite operating under an authoritarian regime and in an environment already populated by several Islamic groups. Drawing on the dialogic model of interpretation which entails, among things, presenting the Islamists’ ideas, experiences and arguments using their own terms and categories, this study has used a wide range of primary and secondary sources and benefited from interviews with a variety of people, including the movement’s founding leader, Sheikh Yassine, before he passed away on 13th December 2012, in order to achieve a better understanding of al-Adl wal-Ihsan. The major findings that come from this research demonstrate that al-Adl wal-Ihsan is a mere response, among others, based on Islamic sources and ijtihad, to legitimate demands of social, political and moral order. Hence, to exclude the moral and spiritual dimension from the analysis would not help to generate plausible explanations of the rise and nature of al-Adl wal-Ihsan or any other Islamic group for that matter. As for al-Adl’s rapid expansion, it has been found to be closely related to five basic factors: a charismatic leadership, an adequate organizational structure, a coherent theoretical framework, an appealing reform strategy and special emphasis on tarbiya [education]. Thus what becomes of al-Adl wal-Ihsan in the future seems to depend on its ability to maintain, if not to improve on what is deemed to be the source of its strength, which is a big challenge.

Abstract:
The present research is a critical, analytical and comparative study combined with the transcription of the whole Tunisian mâlûf’s musical corpus as it was transmitted in the 1871 work entitled Ghâyatu al-surûri wal-munâ ' al-jâmi‘u li-daqâ'iqi raqâ' iqi al-mûsîqâ wal-ghinâ (Perfect welfare and happiness through the refinement of the music and singing). This document represents a unique reference to a better understanding of the musical reality at that time but also a better comparative approach related to the different transformations of the Tunisian music during the second half of the 19th century at diverse levels among which there are the terminology, instrumentation, interpretation (performance) as well as the vocal and instrumental corpus

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Eng. in Logistics)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, 2005.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 184-188).
In support of the Supply Chain 2020 Project at MIT, this thesis identifies current best practices in retail industry supply chains, with a specific focus on mass merchandising and Internet retailing. Using a survey of current literature for context and industry expert interviews, this thesis assesses the current state of the retail industry and analyzes case studies of Wal-Mart and Amazon.com to illustrate retail supply chain best practices. Topics covered in each case study include supply chain strategy and business strategy linkage, operating models, supply chain design, replenishment and distribution processes, and ongoing supply chain improvement initiatives. Wal-Mart and Amazon.com are found to have very different supply chains in terms of structure and processes, based on their different operating models. However, there are many supply chain themes that are common among the two companies. Both case study companies have supply chain strategies, designs, and processes that clearly support their business strategies. Additionally, these companies tailor processes to fit specific product and demand profiles, collaborate extensively with supply chain partners, invest significantly in information technology, focus on operational efficiency, and leverage scale to facilitate competitive advantage through supply chain management. Based on the common and unique aspects of Wal- Mart and Amazon.com's supply chains, we provide recommendations for the potential transferability of Wal-Mart and Amazon.com practices within the retail industry and to other industries.

Abstract:
This inductive doctoral research aims to identify the socio-anthropological functions of western retailing. Inside a functionalist network in the Merton tradition, three cases have been studied with a semio-ethnographic instrument of observation and analysis : Mc Donald's, West Edmonton Mall and Wal-Mart. The findings suggest three socio-anthropological functions of retailers : structuration, inversion and magic

Nulsen, Susan, and n/a. "Combining acoustic analysis and phonotactic analysis to improve automatic speech recognition." University of Canberra. Information Sciences & Engineering, 1998. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20060825.131042.

Abstract:
This thesis addresses the problem of automatic speech recognition, specifically, how to transform an acoustic waveform into a string of words or phonemes. A preliminary chapter gives linguistic information potentially useful in automatic speech recognition. This is followed by a description of the Wave Analysis Laboratory (WAL), a rule-based system which detects features in speech and was designed as the acoustic front end of a speech recognition system. Temporal reasoning as used in WAL rules is examined. The use of WAL in recognizing one particular class of speech sounds, the nasal consonants, is described in detail. The remainder of the thesis looks at the statistical analysis of samples of spontaneous speech. An orthographic transcription of a large sample of spontaneous speech is automatically translated into phonemes. Tables of the frequencies of word initial and word final phoneme clusters are constructed to illustrate some of the phonotactic constraints of the language. Statistical data is used to assign phonemes to phonotactic classes. These classes are unlike the acoustic classes, although there is a general distinction between the vowels, the consonants and the word boundary. A way of measuring the phonetic balance of a sample of speech is described. This can be used as a means of ranking potential test samples in terms of how well they represent the language. A phoneme n-gram model is used to measure the entropy of the language. The broad acoustic encoding output from WAL is used with this language model to reconstruct a small test sample. "Branching" a simpler alternative to perplexity is introduced and found to give similar results to perplexity. Finally, the drop in branching is calculated as knowledge of various sets of acoustic classes is considered. In the work described in this thesis the main contributions made to automatic speech recognition and the study of speech are in the development of the Wave Analysis Laboratory and in the analysis of speech from a phonotactic point of view. The phoneme cluster frequencies provide new information on spoken language, as do the phonotactic classes. The measures of phonetic balance and branching provide additional tools for use in the development of speech recognition systems.

Liu, Chunhang. "Globalisation, value chains and firm-level catch-up in developing countries : the cases of Boeing, Wal-Mart and Coca-Cola in China." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2005. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/265476.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the recent changes in global business structure and the implications for catch-up at the firm level in developing countries through the case studies of Boeing, Wal-Mart and Coca-Cola and the impact of their activities in China. The case studies investigate the strategies of these fi1111S, the resulting value chain structures, and the patterns and impact of their activities in China. Data is collected from interviews with company management, value chain partners, and relevant regulatory bodies, supplemented by information from public sources. The research aims to contribute to the empirical work on multinational firms in relation to economic development and seeks to build a deeper understanding of the ways in which developing countries are integrated into the global economy. General observations of the three value chains include: 1) the industries have become increasingly concentrated at a global level due to large economies of scale and scope in activities such as branding, technology investment and systems integration; 2) all three finns play an important role in shaping value chain structures through planning and coordinating the activities of key partners; 3) the pressures for consolidation have "cascaded" down the supply chains tluough the firms' systems integration efforts, causing increasing concentration in high value-added segments of their supply chains. The value chain structures of the firms in China differ according to their strategies, as does the impact of their activities. A general positive impact relates to greater consumer welfare through increased product quality and safety and lower prices. Certain sectors have witnessed increased entrepreneurial activity, transfer of management and technical know-how, and enhanced factor productivity. At the same time, the "cascade effect" and local activities of the multinational firms have substantially increased barriers for the "catch-up" of local fim1s in the same industry.

Kim, Sook-Hyun. "A Comparison of Consumers' Store Patronage Between South Korea and the United States: Suggestions for the Marketing Strategy of the South Korean Discount Stores." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/31886.

Full text
Abstract:
Since 1997, the retail industry of South Korea has suffered a decline in sales due to the nation's financial crisis. Because of the increase of price consciousness, discount stores have become the stores most attractive to South Korean consumers. The purpose of this study was to (a) compare the differences between South Korean and the U.S. consumers in demographics, shopping orientation, perception of the importance of store and product attributes, and store evaluation, satisfaction and patronage in discount stores and (b) examine the relationships among the six variables. In addition, South Korean consumers' preferences toward the strategies used in the U.S. discount stores were examined to determine whether these strategies could be adapted to South Korean discount stores. The proposed model suggests that consumers' shopping orientation affects their perception of the importance of store and product attributes. Consumers' perception of the importance of attributes affects how they evaluate a store. Consumers' evaluation of the store then influences their satisfaction with the store. If consumers are satisfied with the store, they choose to patronize the store. A total of 234 participants recruited at Wal-Mart were included in this study, 117 from South Korea and 117 from the U.S. Results showed that there were significant differences between the two countries in participants' occupation, marital status, age, education, the perception of the importance of attributes in discount stores, and store evaluation and satisfaction. When the relationships between variables were examined, results showed that the proposed model is partially supported. When South Korean participants' preferences toward the strategies used in the U.S. were examined, they showed high preferences toward some strategies. The implication of the results were discussed.
