Abstract:
In the wake of an era of political and social turmoil, the Oxford Movement represented an effort to recover the Catholic and apostolic patrimony of the Church of England. It had its precursors and background context, but burst forth in 1833 as a potentially disruptive force, challenging contemporaries and provoking opposition. Although the personality and genius of John Henry Newman lay at its heart, the Movement proved greater and more enduring than Newman’s personal Anglican history and took on new life after his departure for Rome in 1845. As the Movement moved away from its Oxford origins to the parishes and wider world, it became increasingly problematic, especially in the context of the rise of Ritualism, as to who could be considered its genuine descendants. Yet the Movement also exercised a profound influence, developing many variations and permutations, and its legacy continues to inform Church life.

Abstract:
This chapter tests to what extent variation in political support over time is influenced by political events. Analyzing an event within the realm of “normal politics,” i.e. a policy decision in a local community to close down schools in an affluent Swedish municipality, the authors study changes in political support among affected citizens and non-affected citizens before decision, after decision, and after implementation. They identify four mechanisms that cause citizens to maintain political support even when faced with a policy decision that affects them negatively: procedural fairness, compromise decisions, fading memories, and constitutional arrangements for vertical division of power. The chapter explores to what extent each of these mechanisms mediates the effect of a policy decision on political support, and find that the partial recovery of political support among negatively affected citizens was mainly driven by compromise decisions and procedural fairness.

Abstract:
Recovery from disease was an event of profound religious significance in early modern England, because it was thought to be ordained by God. This chapter investigates the perceived impact of bodily recovery on spiritual well-being, and asks how patients and their loved ones reacted to the belief that ultimately it was the Lord who had raised them from the sickbed. It shows that across the Protestant spectrum, experiences of recovery were shaped by what can be called the ‘art of recovery’, a set of moral duties and devotional practices derived from Scripture, which were supposed to be performed in the wake of illness. These included resisting sin, cultivating ‘holy affections’, and joining together in collective praise. When patients succeeded in these duties, the joy of recovery was greatly multiplied, since it signified that their souls as well as their bodies were better; but when they failed, the happiness was undermined.

Constantinesco, Thomas. Writing Pain in the Nineteenth-Century United States. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780192855596.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book examines how pain is represented in a range of literary texts and genres from the nineteenth-century United States. It considers the aesthetic, philosophical, and ethical implications of pain across the works of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Harriet Jacobs, Emily Dickinson, Henry James, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, and Alice James, as the national culture of pain progressively transformed in the wake of the invention of anesthesia. Through these writers, it argues that pain, while undeniably destructive, also generates language and identities, and demonstrates how literature participates in theorizing the problems of mind and body that undergird the deep chasms of selfhood, sociality, gender, and race of a formative period in American history. Writing Pain considers first Emerson’s philosophy of compensation, which promises to convert pain into gain. It then explores the limitations of this model, showing how Jacobs contests the division of body and mind that underwrites it and how Dickinson challenges its alleged universalism by foregrounding the unshareability of pain as a paradoxical measure of togetherness. The book investigates next the concurrent economies of affects in which pain was implicated during and after the Civil War and argues, through the example of James and Phelps, for queer sociality as a response to the heteronormative violence of sentimentalism. The last chapter on Alice James extends the critique of sentimental sympathy while returning to the book’s premise that pain is generative and the site of thought. By linking literary formalism with individual and social formation, Writing Pain eventually claims close reading as a method to recover the theoretical work of literature.
