Abstract:
Waka have a special place in the heart of many Maaori. The waka that brought the ancestors of the Maaori to Aotearoa and Te Waipounamu are valued symbols of identity, both culturally and metaphorically. With the effects of colonisation the use of waka as a means of transport disappeared leaving it to re-emerge in the 20th century as a symbol of the revitalisation of Maaori society. Through the construction of waka-taua, ocean going waka and the emergence of waka-ama as a sport, Maaori have endeavoured to reclaim their association to the seas and waterways of New Zealand. This research is a case study of Tupuwae, a kaupapa Maaori injury prevention project using traditional Maaori concepts regarding waka and applying it to a contemporary context. Tapuwae have used this attachment of Maaori to different forms of waka to associate the message of not drinking and driving using purpose-built waka-ama in the southern part of Te Waipounamu. This research identifies some of the wider outcomes that come from a kaupapa Maaori project, but, more importantly it identifies some of the processes that are important in implementing such a project by Maaori living in Otago, outside their tribal boundaries. This research also raises questions about the theoretical underpinnings of kaupapa Maaori theory and argues that there are two threads to this approach, one from a critical theory informed approach and the other from a native theory approach. Key words:Waka, Community Action, Community Development, Kaupapa Maaori, Maaori Development, Maaori Advancement, Native Theory.

Lee, Soo Mi. "Princess Shokushi's poetry and its allusions to women's unseen narratives in the Genji Monogatari." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/4174.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to offer a scholarly approach to the poetics of Princess Shokushi, one of Japan’s most celebrated and influential female poets of the pre-modem era. Princess Shokushi is generally regarded as a poet of imagination, mainly because she wrote a number of passionate love poems despite her lifelong celibacy, imposed on her by her position as imperial princess. While some scholars conclude that Shokushi’s poetry came from her mastery of the traditional craft and a vigorous poetic imagination, others see her poetry as the personal expression of her innermost feelings and life experiences. Focusing on this controversy over whether or not her poetry is, in fact, based on real life experiences or merely invented—which some claim she did by exploiting the poetic conventions of the Japanese male poets of the day—this paper explores Shokushi’s distinctive poetic expression through her use of the literary technique called honka-dori, allusive variation. This research pays special attention to the poems that allude to The Tale ofGenii and reveals how Shokushi’s frequent allusions to this tale and its characters signal her profound interest in the story beyond the conventional literary trends of her time. Shokushi often refers to the specific female characters in her poems—Oigimi, Ukifune, and Lady Murasaki—, abandoned imperial princesses, whose lack of strong family support leaves them in close confinement deep in the mountains. By examining Shokushi’s poetry in the contexts of this narrative, ultimately, this paper will show how, in alluding to these female characters, Shokushi not only furthers her own image as an isolated imperial princess, but also throws light on these female characters’ inner sufferings, which are unknown to the male characters with whom they associate.

Abstract:
This thesis concerns the life-histories of the two contemporary Polynesian vovaging canoes from Aotearoa New Zealand. It documents the background, construction and voyages of Hawaiki Nui (1979 - 1986) built by Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell and Te Aurere (1992 - 1998) built by Hekenukumai Puhipi Busby. It also highlights the historical and cultural significance of waka for Maori and other indigenous Pacific peoples. Based on my field work as a participant in Maori voyaging between 1996 and 1998, I argue that this revival of waka voyaging reaffirms the cultural identities of contemporary Maori and other Polynesians. The case studies of Hawaiki Nui and Te Aurere confirm the ongoing significance of waka not only in Aotearoa New Zealand, but Pacific-wide. Contemporary Polynesian waka voyaging is historically significant as it revives unique Polynesian skills, such as traditional waka-building, navigation and sailing techniques. It is also culturally significant, as it reinforces central Maori (and Polynesian) cultural concepts, such as whakapapa (genealogy ties) and whanaungatanga (sense of belonging). At a time when Maori(as well as other indigenous Pacific peoples) are constantly negotiating and redefining their cultural boundaries within their respective socio-political contexts, Polynesian voyaging waka are reappearing as a strong symbol of Pacific Islanders cultural identities. As a symbol of a shared seafaring past they create timeless platforms for Maori and other Polynesians to negotiate the boundaries of their cultures.

Abstract:
Archaeologists of the oceanian area have perceived boats of islanders of the pacific as the way of displacement of ancient populations that they study. Now, before to be the instrument of a human society, the boat is the outcome of a production process brought into action by this society within the framework of its terrestrial area ; the boat is a subject of study that reflects ways of life and behaviors of societies, when they are at sea and especially when they settle, live and develop on a territory. This work has oriented, in an ethno-archaeological view, to a technological study that uses the operating process as analytic and descriptive way, so as to take advantage of the potential of information typical of the waka (term adopted in this study, that designates proto-polunesian -outrigger or double hulled- boats) for the comprehension of ways of life of the ancient polynesian society. After having established the operating process of the construction of a double hulled waka (tipaerua) and an outrigger one (va'a motu) of Tahiti, to the time of the contact with Europeans, the study has widened to a vaster geographical framework, including archipelagoes of oriental and western Polynesia. This approach puts in relief of questions of methodological order (limits of an operating process, definition of the technical act in Polynesia where the ritual is highly complementary of the action on the matter). More, the construction of the waka, and the waka itself, appears as a total social fact (defined by mauss). The ancient polynesian society reveals an efficient practice of the forestry and the forestry, implying an intimate knowledge with the vegetable environment, and beliefs associated. The determination of synchronic and diachronic constants and the obviousness of the fundamental part of the waka for the ancient polynesian society open new prospects for the theoretical and field archaeological research

Abstract:
In language revitalisation movements the main impetus and passion is often provided by adults who, as second language speakers, have gained fluency in their heritage language. As parents and teachers these adults often have vital roles in the ongoing transmission of the heritage language. This study is based on interviews with thirty-two Māori adults who have each made a strong commitment to becoming a fluent speaker of Māori. The study posited that the informants would have a strongly-held worldview which enabled them to engage with and maintain a relationship with the Māori language. This worldview is expressed through a range of metaphors, the four most frequent being: LANGUAGE IS A PATH, LANGUAGE IS A CANOE, LANGUAGE IS FOOD, LANGUAGE LEARNER IS A PLANT. The worldview articulated by these metaphors has a quasi-religious nature and draws on elements of New Age humanism, a connection with Māori culture and ancestors as well as kaupapa Māori (Māori-orientated and controlled initiatives). The source domains for these metaphors are traced through a study of various Māori sources from the 19th century through to the present day. This study shows how exploitation of these metaphors has changed throughout this time period leading to their current exploitation by the newly-fluent informants. The metaphors preferred by the informants were contrasted with the prominent metaphor LANGUAGE IS A TREASURE, the entailments of which were found to be more relevant to the experience of native speakers. The informants' experience also contrasts with the focus of language planners in that the informants are more focussed on how the Māori language is important for them personally than how they contribute to the revitalisation of the Māori language. These findings have implications for the revitalisation of the Māori language and have relevance for other endangered languages.

Mc, Nelly Kim. "Re-cycling her words : the transmission of narrative through poetry in the reception of Kenreimon'in Ukyō no Daibu shū within the imperial waka anthologies." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/52887.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the transmission of narratives and cultural memory through medieval Japanese poetic reception by examining how selections from one aristocratic woman’s memoir are borrowed, omitted, or altered in the cross-genrefication from poetic memoir to poetic anthology. I examine the medieval reception and re-presentation of Kenreimon’in Ukyō no Daibu shū (The Poetic Memoir of Lady Daibu, ca. 1220) within the latter thirteen of twenty-one Japanese imperial poetry anthologies of waka (jūsandaishū), compiled from 1234 to 1439. I focus on her reception within Gyokuyō wakashū (Collection of Jeweled Leaves, ca.1312), and Fūga wakashū (Collection of Elegance, ca.1346), as these two anthologies include ten and six of her poems, respectively, which is more than any of the other anthologies. Their selection of so many of her poems indicates a statistically significant interest in rehabilitating her as a poet. Lady Daibu (ca. 1155-1232) grounds many of the poems in her memoir within a context of love, civil war, and loss through a chronological prose narrative that describes the circumstances of the poems’ composition. I argue that the anthologies transmit narratives about her through their selection of poems, contextualizing headnotes, integration of voices, and structural choices in terms of where her poems are placed within the anthology. While the narratives created in this manner have some connection to Lady Daibu’s self-portrayal within her memoir, such as her romantic relationship with Taira no Sukemori (ca. 1161-1185), connection to the Heike clan, and intimacy with the imperial family, they frequently differ from her own story and each other. In other words, the historical narratives within the anthologies create competing cultural histories about Lady Daibu, the time in which she lived, and the focal point of much of her attention—Sukemori and the Heike clan, who lost the Genpei War (1180-1185). Through this, I focus on the gendered roles female poets occupy within the imperial anthologies in relation to love and lamentation. As all of the anthologies were compiled by men, this thesis also considers how women’s self-writings were reframed in a gendered discourse of men compiling canonical works.

Morrison, Laurie Elena. "Māori Women and Gambling: Every Day is a War Day!" The University of Waikato, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10289/2537.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was concerned with the health implications of new forms of gambling such as casinos, pokie machines and internet gambling for Māori women and their families in Auckland and the Bay of Plenty region of Aotearoa (New Zealand). It set out to discover what culturally appropriate services were available and the extent to which Māori women gamblers were utilising them. The literature documenting Māori perceptions of gambling shows that Māori women gamblers and their partner/whānau members and gambling service providers have been little studied previously. These goals translated into the following specific aims: 1) to study how Māori women problem gamblers, their partner or whānau members and key informants perceived gambling, what it meant to them and why they did it; 2) to investigate the consequences of gambling for Māori women, whānau and service providers in dealing with the effects of gambling; 3) to report on how these three groups dealt with the effects of gambling; and 4) to discover what helped to bring about positive changes for the three groups. All of the aims were achieved. A Māori approach (Kaupapa Māori), combined with a naturalistic approach to data collection, was adopted. Qualitative methods are most appropriate to use when working with some Māori, as there is a growing realisation that research with Māori needs to be interactive. A Māori research procedure modelled on the ritual ceremony of encounter (Pōwhiri) provided an appropriate structure for the development and presentation of the research process. The major focus was on the qualitative data obtained from semi-structured interviews in two locations - Rotorua and Auckland. The interviews were conducted with twenty Māori women gamblers, sixteen whānau members including partners and ten interviews with staff involved in services that provided help for problem gamblers. The three interview schedules were based on a number of broad themes and open-ended questions to obtain meaningful descriptive data. The interviews were audio recorded and used to produce transcripts that were then sent back to the participants for feedback. Qualitative data analysis was conducted on the returned documents. The findings from this study revealed major impacts of the women's socio-economic, familial and societal circumstances on gambling behaviour and its effects, which are areas of concern for mental health professionals and researchers. The mythical Māori canoes on which Māori voyaged from their place of origin (Hawaiiki) to Aotearoa, the Waka, provided an appropriate metaphor to present the interrelationship between the pull and push factors toward gambling, and its implications for society. This is illustrated as a spinning waka, Te Waka Hūrihuri. On the other hand, Te Waka Māia (courageous) demonstrates the relationships between the variables that help Māori women gamblers to cope and helpful strategies found to assist them to modify or stop their gambling behaviour. It is recommended that the government limit the proliferation of gaming venues and continue to encourage development of emerging Māori services. Moreover, a coordinated approach is essential, as Māori women gamblers, partners and whānau members need to heal together for positive outcomes for Māori health development in Aotearoa. The main implication of this study is that a wide range of further research into Māori and gambling is required. Recommendations on ways in which the current delivery of services in Rotorua and Auckland could be improved are: That the Ministry of Health purchase services that establish support groups for Māori people with problem gambling and their whānau, and That non-Māori provider services and organisations support the development of emerging Māori services. Heeding the outcome of this research should help improve New Zealand's existing health policy and capacity for Māori women's health development. It should also enrich our understanding of the adaptation patterns of Māori whānau member/s, and thus should have implications, not only for Māori health policies, but also relevance for the wider field of international cross-comparative research on indigenous gambling and mental health issues. Limitations of this study included a small, localised sample that means the findings can only tentatively be generalised to the wider population of Māori women gamblers. Nonetheless, information gained from the study contributes to understanding of the adaptation patterns of Māori women gamblers, their whānau member/s, and those who are trying to help them. It is hoped that the study will make it at least a little less true that every day is a war day for Māori women and their whānau trying to deal with the problem of gambling.

Jelbring, Stina. "A Decontextual Stylistics Study of the Genji Monogatari : With a Focus on the "Yûgao" Story." Doctoral thesis, Stockholms universitet, Institutionen för orientaliska språk, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-38006.

Full text
Abstract:
The dominant part of the research on the “Yûgao” (The Twilight Beauty) story of the Japanese eleventh-century classic the Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji) is philological and often excludes a general literary analysis. This story has also been related to Japanese and Chinese literary influences, thereby placing the text in its literary context. The present study is an attempt to relate it more to theories to which it has hitherto been unrelated and thereby formulate a descriptive stylistics in a decontextual perspective. This aim also includes a look at how the theories confronted with the “Yûgao” story may be affected. First I introduce the problematics of context versus decontext by means of a survey of metapoetical texts about the monogatari (tale, narrative) genre with special regard to the Genji Monogatari. Next I analyze the characters and the setting, primarily using a narratological method. This is followed by an analysis of the story’s themes and motives. Chapter 5 looks at compositional elements, while the starting-point for the succeeding chapter is the interpretation of the “Yûgao” story as more or less a fairytale, and thus not as advanced  a narrative as the latter part of the work. I shall, in contrast, argue that there are quite a few aspects of this story that do not fit into the model of the folktale. In Chapter 7 decontextualization as a concept turns from the story as such to address another concept, namely metaphor. Here the meaning of metaphor is expanded in order to include concepts that are not necessarily seen as such. Subsequently, I investigate the symbolic system surrounding the moonflower (yûgao) image. Lastly, the concept of decontext is taken a step further to survey how the genre of the Genji Monogatari has been transformed in the process of translation into the Tale of Genji. The main conclusion is that the “Yûgao” story combines tragic themes with comic motifs to build a symbolic narrative with characters hovering between roles.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to undertake a theoretical analysis of the dynamics of change in pre-Ngāi Tahu and Ngāti Māmoe oral traditions of Te Waipounamu to gain a deeper understanding of their nature, function, evolution and meaning. For the purposes of this thesis a framework will be established to classify changes to encompass different types of alterations made pre-contact and post-contact to authentic and un-authentic oral traditions. This model will analyse the continuum of change and will be applied in later chapters to pre-Ngāi Tahu and Ngāti Māmoe traditions to gain an understanding of the dynamics, evolution and construction of the oral traditions of Te Waipounamu. This study of the morphology of tradition will demonstrate they were never fixed but evolved alongside their communities as they adapted to ensure tribal identity and mana was firmly entrenched in their local landscape. A major component of this thesis will be analysis of Waitaha traditions centring upon three key questions; firstly who were Waitaha peoples, secondly, where were they from, and thirdly, were they, and do they continue to be separate social units? This thesis will contribute to this discussion by analysing literature concerning pre-Ngāi Tahu and Ngāti Māmoe tribal identities to ascertain not just who they were and where they were from but how their identities have been constructed and modified over time. Analysis will examine the role of oral tradition in establishing tribal identity and how Waitaha traditions were changed both pre and post-contact to suit the cultural, political and ideological imperatives of the time, providing an insight into how our ancestors perceived, recollected and constructed the past to suit the needs of the present.

Abstract:
Ngaromoana Raureti Tomoana is a painter from the East Coast of the North Island. In more than 30 years she has produced and shown a large body of work, like many other women artists concurrently juggling motherhood and artistic performance. Over approximately the last 10 years, she has formalized her education completing the Advanced Diploma for Maori Visual Arts at Toihoukura in Gisborne as well as a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters of Maori Visual Arts at Massey University. The artist, who identifies as an Indigenous Village Artist, is hardly known outside her local area of Northern Hawkes Bay, and, apart from a short feature in Mataora , a picture in Te Ata , and various catalogue entries, little has been written about her work. This thesis introduces Ngaromoana Raureti Tomoana and explores the notion of an indigenous village art. I incorporate feminist and postcolonial discourses into a political and critical engagement with her art, which addresses issues of village and land based cultural identity as well as race and gender. I argue that her work is politically motivated and important in the context of contemporary Maori art. Furthermore, based on a holistic world view, it simultaneously reaches out into the wider, global community. Intertwining local and personal history, her oeuvre is the manifestation of a female path and a female perspective, of identification with her village and beyond.

Boldrini, Lucia. "In Dante's wake : the Dantean poetics of 'Finnegans Wake'." Thesis, University of Leicester, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/35090.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis investigates how the theories of linguistic and literary composition of Dante's treatises and the poetics of ineffability of the Divine Comedy may be seen to provide the basis for (one of) the poetics of Joyce's Finnegans Wake. The polysemy of Joyce's last novel relies on Dante's literary-exegetical model of the four levels of meaning at the same time as it challenges it so as to show both its inadequacy for the modern literary work and, conversely, how its failings can be turned to the writer's advantage in the production of an original text. The multilingual idiom of the Wake draws from, at the same time as it reshapes, Dante's conception of the history of language and his theory of an illustrious poetic language, and the thesis shows how Joyce exploits these two aspects, turning them into a narrative framework for several episodes of the Wake and thematising their features in order to explore the function of character-roles in connection with the processes of artistic creation. Finally, Joyce's reliance on a pliable language for his evocation of the unfathomable dimension of the "nocturnal world" and of the unconscious is shown to be comparable to the poetics of ineffability that informs Dante's "vision" in the Divine Comedy. In this context, the thesis looks at such issues as silence, vowels / vocalisation, and the use of geometry to express the ineffable and / or the unspeakable. Joyce's use of Dante's works thus involves a constant reflection on the processes of writing and of literary composition as well as on the relationship between a modern writer and his sources, and the intertextual practice of the Wake is shown to be part of the "poetics in progress" that Joyce has been elaborating from his earliest to his last publication.

Abstract:
Currently the fashion sector has managed to position itself with greater strength and importance in the world and in Peru. This can be reinforced because Peru Retail (2019) mentions on its web platform that the fashion market could move around US $ 1,326 million (Euromonitor International). Likewise, it is important to recognize the important role played by users who decide to reinvent themselves by offering second-hand clothing following quality standards, this phenomenon is known as the second-hand clothing business. This project is based on the proposal of an intermediary web platform between users who have unused clothes or accessories in good quality and clients interested in acquiring fashion products with affordable prices, generating a process called circular economy. In this way, the operational and economic viability of the sale of second-use clothing and accessories through the “Wara” platform will be evaluated. The internet and the advancement in technology allow us to optimize the operations carried out during the different processes because our essential sales platforms are social networks. The global reach through online channels and the current situation are opportunity factors to implement an electronic business. The spread of the COVID 19 virus and the implementation of quarantines or states of emergency in different countries of the world have led to the confined people to carry out bedroom remodeling practices, store unused objects, but above all, closet cleaning. Given this, people worldwide and nationally in order to earn income carry out this type of organic sale. It is important to note the potential and constant growth shown by the fashion resale market, which is estimated to grow 20 times faster than the Peruvian retail market in the last three years, according to Global Data research indices for the Second Hand Report 2019 (Peru Retail, 2019). They associate this business model with the environmental impact, which has become more relevant in recent years. Regarding the financial structure of the project, it is essential to mention that the investment required to start operations is S / .6,029.24 and a financing of S / .50,000 to cover expenses and costs during the following operational years. The current situation does not allow the business model to be profitable due to the different limitations, which is why it does not show net profit in the projected 3 years.

Abstract:
This project takes a new approach to the treatment of Catholicism in Finnegans Wake, by looking beyond established theological and philosophical readings in order to focus on the intricacies of Joyce's engagement with Irish Catholic culture, c. 1850•1 939. This period accounts for the years of Cardinal Cullen's 'devotional revolution' in Ireland, for the formation of-the deeply conservative and Rome-centred religious culture into which Joyce was born, and for the emergence of a new Irish Catholic state following the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921. As my tide suggests, this thesis highlights Joyce's critique of the Church. Adopting a historicist methodology, and drawing upon extensive archival research, I consider how Joyce's sources-both textual and cultural-are transformed through his revolutionary aesthetic into a radical dismantling of Irish Catholic society. Topics considered include the following: the role of the artist-intellectual in the 'new' Ireland, as shown through the portrait of Shem the Penman; the nature and reach of Joyce's devastating anticlerical satire of Shaun; the difficulties faced by unmarried Irish Catholic girls, as embodied by Issy, and the impact of ALP's concerted attack on the material culture of Irish Catholicism, an act that is performed in defence of her husband. The final section of this thesis rums LO the historical complexities of Book IV. It attempts to articulate how ALP's closing monologue can be understood against the backdrop of a new dawn of conservative Irish Catholicism, and in relation to the decline of the Anglicized patriarch HCE.

Abstract:

The performance of a hot wire probe with three wires is investigated for two different flow cases. The wires are made of a platinum/rhodium alloy, and has a diameter of 5 micrometer. The three wires make a probe volume with acrossection of approximately 5 mm. A cosinus fit using the effective angle method gives a deviation of plus/minus 1 degree for a variation of yaw angle equal to plus/minus 20 degrees. First the probe was tested in a fully developed turbulent pipe flow, for Re_D = 10^5. Good results were obtained for |y/R|<0.8, both for mean velocities and turbulent stresses. Closer to the wall the mean flow gradient was to large relative to the probe resolution, giving large errors. The second flow case was a cylinder wake. A traverse of the flow at x/D = 10 was performed at Re_D = 3*10^3. The mean velocities and turbulent stresses was partly found to be in qualitative agreement with results found in litterature. The shear stresses uw and vw were however found to be unphysically large, this is belived to be due to the velocity gradient in the wake. Conditional averaging of the wake results with respect to shedding frequency was also conducted.

Abstract:
In this master thesis the meandering of the wake of a three bladed horizontal axis model wind turbine has been studied. Measurements have been conducted by the use of four hot-wire probes located at multiple nearby points in the wake at X/D = 1, 3 and 5 downstream the model wind turbine. The meandering has been studied based on the location of the tip vortices shed by the turbine blades. The experiments were conducted in the wind tunnel at NTNU at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering. The aim of the study was to see the effect on the meandering of the wake of the model turbine when placed in an incoming flow with turbulence intensity typical for atmospheric turbulence, compared to an incoming flow with a low turbulence intensity round 0.3 %. The atmospheric turbulence was generated by inserting a grid in the inlet to the test section in the wind tunnel. The grid generated a turbulence intensity round 5.5 % and integral length scales of Luuz = 3.1E-2 m and Luux = 6.5E-2 m at the position of the model wind turbine in the tunnel. The performance of the model turbine in both incoming flows was calculated based on measurements of the thrust and torque acting on the turbine in a free stream velocity of 10 m/s. The greatest deviation in the performance curve was found at the top of the curve; however the difference between the two cases was minor. Initial measurements with a single hot-wire probe was conducted in the wake of the turbine to locate the tip vortices. Based on these results, the location to conduct the multiple hot-wire measurements was decided. Already at this stage the effect of the grid turbulence was evident due to the smeared out energy in the flow in the wake caused by diffusion and mixing. The tip speed ratio (TSR) of the model wind turbine was 6 in the case without grid generated turbulence, and 7 in the case with grid turbulence during the final measurements in the wake. The effect of the change in TSR was evaluated, and it was found that new measurements were not needed. The normal stress based on the velocity measurements in the wake were phase averaged according to the position of the turbine blade using Matlab. When comparing these results with the normal stress calculated directly from the time series, it was found that the tip vortices had merged together or broken up at all measurement point except at X/D = 1 downstream the turbine without grid generated turbulence. Using power spectral density function (PSD) the observations were confirmed. The tip vortices was not equally distributed within the wake and were located 30°, 128° and 224° at respectively z/R =1.12, 1.15 and 1.20. Their diameters were found to be 1.8E-2 m, 1.35E-2 m, 2.7E-2 m in z direction. The location of the peak in the normal stress tended to meander a bit back and forth, mainly directed towards the rotor center, with a distance from 4.5E-3 m to 1.8E-2 m, and in the streamwise direction with a total distance of 6.17E-2 m. The tip vortices seem to meander individually within the wake, and not with the same distance.Based on the results and observations conducted throughout this study, new measurements should be conducted at a shorter distance to the turbine rotor to be able to compare the meandering of the wake for the two different incoming flows.

Abstract:
The argument of this thesis is that Finnegans Wake is a peculiarly appropriate text for an investigation of the academic discipline of English, and that the issue of readership is the best way to approach the Wake. The thesis, which is organised into three main sections, shows that both Finnegans Wake and the discipline of English Studies are similarly engaged in problems of defining audiences. The opening section shows that the Wake has long been seen as a limit to literature, and as a defining text of literary study. Reception theory proves unable to cope with a study of historical audiences. Finnegans Wake was written over a period roughly concomitant with the rapid professionalisation of English studies and underwent a loss of audiences except for its critical reviewers. The extended third chapter sets out in some detail the growth of English studies, both in itself and more specifically as a context for the name of Joyce in the 1930s and beyond. This also includes analysis of the passage of the Wake in university syllabi. The second section considers post-structuralist claims that the Wake disrupts or subverts the space of the academy. It analyses a wide range of poststructuralist and other reactions to the Wake, and proceeds to a study of inscriptions of readership in the work of Derrida, and explores Derrida's idea of audiences for Joyce. The third section presents two readings of key elements of Finnegans Wake. Analysis of the letters, and of some of Joyce's sources, stresses the important role of the professor figures, which is indicative of the extent to which Joyce's last work was influenced by the professionalisation of literary study. Textual analysis proceeds with the Four, who function as an internal interpretive community. A brief conclusion sums up the argument of the thesis.

Abstract:
This orchestral suite is based on an original narrative by the composer and each movement is written as though it were for use in a video game featuring this narrative. Taking place in an other-planetary city, Seraphyn Wake is a super-powered private eye who hides the fact that she is not entirely human from her bigoted clientele. She ultimately chooses to reveal her true nature to defend her city and faces the repercussions of that choice. These four movements begin her story. The first is the main title, serving as a musical signature to the game. Movements II and III feature level music that is utilized in various gameplay states, and movement IV relates directly to the game narrative as a scripted sequence. In gaming, a scripted sequence presents story-driven moments from within gameplay instead of through a film-like cutscene. This piece is approximately 16 minutes in duration.

Abstract:
Wake vortices pose a threat to a following aircraft, because they can induce a roll and compromise the safety of everyone on board. Caused by a difference in pressure between the upper and the lower part of the wings, these invisible flows of air are a major hazard and have to be avoided by separating the aircraft at considerable distances. One of the known constraints in airport capacity for both departure and arrival operations is the large headway resulting from the wake spacing separation criteria. Reducing wake vortex separations to a safe level between successive aircraft can increase capacity in the National Airspace System (NAS) with corresponding savings in delay times. One of the main goals of the Wake Encounter Model (WEM) described in this thesis is to assess the outcome from future reduced separation criteria in the NAS. The model has been used to test probable encounters in todayâ s operations, and can also be used to test NextGen scenarios, such as Close Parallel Approaches and reduced in-trail separation flights. This thesis presents model enhancements to account for aircraft turning maneuvers, giving the wake a more realistic shape. Three major airspaces, New York, Southern California and Atlanta, were analyzed using the original and the enhanced WEM to determine if the enhanced model better represents the conditions in todayâ s operations. Additionally, some analysis on the wake lateral travel for closely spaced runways is presented in this thesis. Finally, some extension tools for post -analysis, such as animation tool and various graphs depicting the interactions between wake pairs were developed.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on developing and examining the capabilities of a new in-house aerodynamic analysis tool, AeroSIM+, and investigating rotor-rotor aerodynamic interactions for two helicopters, one behind the other in forward flight. AeroSIM+ is a 3-D unsteady vortex panel method potential flow solver based on a free vortex wake methodology. Validation of the results with the experimental data is performed using the Caradonna-Tung hovering rotor test case. AeroSIM+ code is improved for forward flight conditions so that, the blades are allowed to move according to the rotor dynamics. In the simulations, blade airload prediction is seen to be sensitive to changes in vortex core size. Blade Vortex Interaction (BVI) locations differ depending on the relative position of the rear rotor with respect to the front rotor as well as on the forward flight speed. It was observed that the performance characteristics of the rear rotor alter depending on the relative positions of the rotors within the asymmetric wake flow field. The results of this thesis study such as the computed forces and moments on each rotor and the frequency characteristics of these loads can be also used in helicopter dynamics simulators.

Abstract:
This thesis discusses the solar wind interaction with the Moon and the formation of the lunar plasma wake from a kinetic perspective. The Moon is essentially a non-conducting body which has a tenuous atmosphere and no global magnetic fields. The solar wind plasma impacts directly the lunar day-side and is absorbed by the lunar surface. This creates a plasma void and forms a wake at the night side of the Moon.We study the properties and structure of the lunar wake for typical solar wind conditions using a three-dimensional hybrid plasma solver. Also, we study the solar wind proton velocity space distribution functions at close distances to the Moon in the lunar wake and investigate the effects of lunar surface plasma absorption and non-isothermal solar wind velocity space distribution functions on the solar wind protons there. Finally, we compare the simulation results with the observations and show that a hybrid model of plasma can explain the kinetic aspects of the lunar wake and we investigate the effects of the lunar surface plasma absorption and non-isothermal solar wind velocity distribution on the solar wind proton properties there.

Abstract:
In the present study, the mid-field vortex wake is investigated. For the most part, the results focus on the motion of a pair of co-rotating vortices prior to merger, both in and out of ground effect. However, in order to verify the experimental and computational methods, results for single vortices, counter-rotating pairs, and complex wakes are also presented. A method is presented which allows measurement of the time dependent motion of vortex filaments. This optical method interferes minimally with the wake and allows recording of vortex location and time-dependent motion. From the position and time information recorded, extraction of the amplitudes of motion, core motion, spiraling behavior, vortex strengths, and the principal planes of motion is possible. First, a single vortex is studied in order to establish a basis for comparison. The dye remains in the core and the motion of a single vortex is shown to exhibit a growth in amplitude with increasing downstream distance and strength. The core motion is shown to be minimal, remaining smaller that one core diameter. In addition, when the single vortex is forced to oscillate at a given frequency, the dye still remains in the core, even though the amplitudes of motion are large. The forcing frequency is identified easily against the background noise. Two four-vortex cases are then presented. The first case consists of filaments that spiral while in the second they scatter. These results are consistent with those shown in literature and show that the experimental method can be used for analyzing complex wakes. Pairs of unforced, co-rotating filaments are studied outside of ground effect. Many cases are presented, some for nearly equal strengths and others in which one vortex is much stronger than the other. As in the single-vortex case, the amplitudes of motion are shown to increase as the downstream distance becomes greater. The constant rate of spiraling is shown to increase as the vortex strength increases and vortex span decreases. Vortex span either remains constant or decreases with downstream distance depending on the vortex separation distance. The motion of the center of spiraling is shown to be minimal, similar to the motion of the vortex core in the single-vortex cases. The filaments are shown to sometimes oscillate along preferred directions, which is inconsistent with a theoretical model developed in 1975. A few cases are also presented in which the merger location is analyzed. However, these are visual investigations only, since it is not possible to obtain quantitative data for such cases with the experimental method available. The behavior of co-rotating vortices in the presence of forcing functions is then presented. The results are compared to the theoretical model developed in 1975 and those published after 2002. However, a direct comparison with analytical results is not possible due to the large scatter in the experimental data. Regardless, the experimental results show that the forced corotating vortices do have an unstable oscillatory motion with growing amplitude. The preferred direction of motion implies the presence of stationary waves. These results contradict those of the analytical model developed in 1975 but agree in nature with those published more recently. Ground effect is then considered for counter-rotating vortices, because there is a wealth of information on this topic in the literature. When counter-rotating vortices are near a ground plane, a lateral drift as well as a rebounding behavior is present. The counter-rotating vortices are shown to have a preferred direction of motion which tends to become parallel to the ground plane. The motion is also shown to have increasing amplitude, although this quantity is slightly reduced by the presence of the ground plane. In addition, ground roughness in the form of streamwise ridges has no affect on the vortex trajectories, within the range of downstream distances observable in these experiments. After comparing the results to those in literature, it is concluded that the experimental method is valid and can be used to study co-rotating vortices in ground effect. Literature lacks information on co-rotating vortices in ground effect. The results in this document show that co-rotating vortices in ground effect have a lateral drift as well as a rebound similar to those of counter-rotating pairs. The resulting motion is similar to that of leapfrogging vortex rings. Preferred directions of motion are present, although no trend can be established. In addition, the amplitudes of motion are reduced slightly by the presence of the ground, just as they are for the counter-rotating vortices. Due to the lack of information on co-rotating vortices in ground effect in the current literature, a comparison is impossible. Therefore, two simple computation efforts are undertaken in order to verify some of the flow features. Using a two-dimensional viscous analysis, limited to laminar flow, it is shown that when co-rotating vortices are placed near a stationary wall, a boundary layer forms on the surface and separates. The secondary vortex released by boundary layer separation leads to rebounding of the primary vortices. In addition to affecting the trajectory, the no-slip boundary also affects the time to vortex merger as well as leading to an elongation of the vorticity contours. Furthermore, this analysis demonstrates that making the strengths of the two vortices differ slightly does not affect the spiraling rate, surface boundary layer separation, or rebound. A second inviscid model is also used to study cases consisting of two vortices of unequal strengths. Having unequal strengths does affect the lateral drift of corotating vortices in ground effect. Also, the center of spiraling shifts towards the stronger vortex. However, the inviscid model shows that the vortex span is unaffected by difference in strengths.

Abstract:
This dissertation focusses on James Joyce’s use of Old Norse-Icelandic religion and mythology, as well as writing about pre-Christian Scandinavia, in Finnegans Wake. In the context of studies of the reception of pre-Christian Scandinavia, the Wake is peculiar in its concern with the meaning of the use of the past, as well as its famous difficulty. In the first chapter, which is an examination of these topics, it is shown that the use of the past is central in the dynamic poetics of the Wake. Building on the work of scholars such as Fritz Senn and Daniel Ferrer, it is argued that the key to interpreting Joyce’s use of Old Scandinavia in the Wake is engaging with the obscurity of the language of the text. The second and third chapters analyse Joyce’s use of Old Norse religion and mythology throughout the Wake. Joyce represents Norse mythology as conveying a cyclic conception of time. This ‘Norse cycle’ serves as a myth for the cyclic model of linguistic creation in the Wake, in which destruction, represented by Ragnarök/Ragnarøkkr, and the use of the past play central roles. Joyce’s intricate use of elements of Norse myth tends to fit into the outline of this cycle. The Old Norse gods Loki, Baldr, Óðinn and Þórr are made into manifestations of the male members of the archetypal family of the Wake, the Earwickers. Critics have always asserted that HCE is a ‘Scandinavian’ or of ‘Norse descent,’ and the fourth and fifth chapters analyse the meaning of these assertions in terms of the Wake. It is shown how Joyce built the character of HCE using racial constructs such as the ‘Aryan’ and ‘Nordic’ Scandinavian. It is examined how Joyce used a variety of techniques to blend biological and linguistic creation, providing a distinctive modern insight into the meaning of the reception of pre-Christian Scandinavia.

Abstract:
Aircraft wakes have been the subject of extensive research for several decades as it poses economic, safety and environmental issues. The wake is composed of powerful counter-rotating vortices that persist long after the aircraft has passed. In this thesis, the nonlinear dynamics of aircraft wake vortices is investigated through Direct Numerical Simulation. The aim is to explore the nonlinear effects on wake vortex behaviour and evaluate the potential for the anticipated destruction of the vortices through optimal perturbation. First the disruptive potential of the linear optimal perturbation of the flow is evaluated by applying it with increasing initial amplitude and observing the nonlinear response of the flow. With sufficient yet reasonable initial amplitude the linear optimal perturbation halves the life-span of the vortex pair by accelerating the loss of coherence of the vortices after the linking phase. Next the nonlinear gradient-based optimisation tool that was developed during the thesis is validated by reproducing existing results concerning a simple vortical flow: an isolated two-dimensional vortex. In doing so new nonlinear optimisation results are obtained and analysed. In particular it is shown that the 2D nonlinear optimal perturbation of an isolated vortex can induce considerably greater transient growth than the linear optimal. In some cases the nonlinear optimal causes a transition to a quasisteady asymmetric state, bypassing the natural axisymmetrisation process. The effect of the vortex vorticity profile on the optimal perturbations is also studied. Vortices with sharper profiles experiencefar greater linear perturbation growth, however the nonlinear growth is significantly inferior. Finally the nonlinear optimal perturbation analysis of the isolated vortex is extended to three dimensions. Although the 3D nonlinear optimals produce less growth than their linear counterparts, they can lead to quasi-permanent high energy states

Cahill, Clinton Barry. "Drawing the wake : how might illustrative drawing contribute a valid alternative reading of 'Finnegans Wake'?" Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2017. http://e-space.mmu.ac.uk/620999/.

Abstract:
The practical aspect of this research and this supporting commentary are intended to contribute to the understanding of James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake by applying a method of reading that incorporates drawing as a means of recording subjective visualimaginative responses to the text. The commentary provides a contextualised account of practical inquiry written from the perspective of a visual practitioner. The practical methodology involved annotated reading and mapping, and systematic observation and recording, through written notes and drawing, of visual impressions provoked in the reader. The primary source for the research was the subjective experience of reading documented in, and through, drawing practice. The project applies a conception of ‘illustrative drawing’ through a method of ‘reading-through-drawing’. Material outcomes and the experience of reading Finnegans Wake are discussed in terms of internal and external proximity to the text, privacy, silence, bodies, space, occupation, exchange, enactment and mimesis. The project is intended to contribute to the critical study of drawing as a means of illustration, to the visualisation of literature and its functions, and the relationship of these to the experience of reading. The illustrative intention of the research is in exposing the immediate effect of Finnegans Wake on the visual imagination in the moment of reading, tracing the manner of its occurrence and making this evident to others. The project demonstrates the integration of drawing into the work of reading a complex literary text. It also demonstrates how the reader’s endurance can be made visible in the accumulated trace of a reading practice that addresses and transforms the text by which it is fascinated and to which it returns. The project is situated within the broad historical and critical context of Wake studies and aligned with readings and illustrative visual responses to the text from outside literary scholarship. Its methodology is informed by phenomenological studies in reading and in drawing, and is applied through a qualitative methodology of reflexive, reflective illustrative drawing practice. It proposes that the body of practice can be viewed conclusively as inconclusive, drawn not in finality but as outcome, to date, of an illustrative drawing practice and pertinent method of inquiry into Finnegans Wake. It makes visible the co-production of contingent meanings by text and reader as an extrusion or extension of the literary work into distributed images.

Roughley, Alan Robert. "Finnegans wake as a deconstructive text." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/27520.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation considers Finnegans Wake as a deconstructive writing that exemplifies many of the textual operations that the French critical theorist Jacques Derrida attempts to define through his use of such "undecidable" terms and "non-concepts" as "difference," "dissemination," "trace," and "grafting." It argues that the Wake operates much like the "bifurcated writing" and "grouped textual field" that Derrida identifies as the only possible site for a deconstructive engagement of the terms and concepts of the Western metaphysical tradition, the tradition that Derrida terms phallogocentrism. The Wake has been an important text in the critical formulations of many contemporary theorists, and, as Derrida has recently acknowledged, his own theories of dissemination and deconstruction have been considerably affected by the Wake during the twenty-five to thirty years that he has been learning to read it. In drawing on Derrida's theories to analyze the Wake, this dissertation utilizes Derrida's terms to "re-mark" in Joyce's text, the disseminative textual operations that Derrida has marked as operative in the texts of the history of philosophy and in "so-called literary" texts like Finnegan’s Wake. In a certain sense, it renders unto Joyce's text that which has always already belonged to it. Drawing on Derrida's investigation of speech and writing, the dissertation considers the Wake's identification of itself as a fusion of speech and writing that requires a "speechreading" on the part of its readers. It supports this consideration by employing Umberto Eco's semiotic methodology to trace the network of metonymic lexemes by which the Wake identifies itself as a writing for the ear as well as the eye. Next it analyzes the Wake's tenth chapter as a chapter that exploits the formula 1+2+3+4=10 and produces a writing that operates as an arithmetical textual machine which problematizes the traditional concepts of presence and being and which also works towards dislodging the phallogocentric organization of writing with such hierarchically organized binary terms as male/female and central/marginal. In order to illustrate how the Wake disseminatively disrupts the binary terms by which phallogocentrism dominates thought, speech, and writing, the dissertation also considers how Joyce's text functions in an Intertextual relationship with some of the writings of Blake and Shakespeare. It does this by analyzing how the Wake dismantles some of the philosophical paradigms operating in the Blake and Shakespeare texts and takes important signifiers from those texts in order to set them to work as signifiers of signifieds that are radically different from those in the texts of Blake and Shakespeare.

Abstract:
With environmental concern growing in both affluent and developing countries, roof top ventilators, a form of natural ventilation requiring only wind energy to ensure quality air circulation and comfort is becoming a considered choice of many households and industries. Unfortunately, however, many of these ventilators have evolved through trial and error and the flow physics associated with these ventilators is barely understood. The present experimental project was, therefore, undertaken as part of UNSW- Industry collaboration program funded under an Australian Research Council Grant to explore whether the aerodynamics forces acting on these ventilators during their operation could be obtained. A commercial roof top ventilator supplied by industry was, therefore, tested in an open jet wind tunnel of the University of New South Wales and the results are presented in this thesis. A novel feature of this project is the examination of the suitability of ???the three dimensional wake traverse??? technique to the wake of rotating ventilator. This technique has so far been applied with limited success to the wake of lifting bodies of fixed wing configuration only. In the absence of adequate data in the literature on rotating ventilator, the aerodynamics force components obtained by this technique have been compared against force balance measurements. The results show that the wake traverse technique is capable of determining lift and total drag forces associated with the ventilator flow during its operation from the pressure and velocity information gathered downstream of a ventilator in its wake. Generally, from these data, the technique also allows isolation of the profile and induced components of the drag force. However, from the induced drag value, while it is possible to determine the lift force, it is however, found that a more accurate value of lift force can be evaluated using axial vorticity formulation. The availability of the above technique which does not require measurements on the test specimen itself, will aid in providing a cost efficient investigation of the aerodynamic forces and consequently the performance of a roof top ventilator.
