Abstract:
Purpose. The demand for cancer care has increased among aging North American populations as cancer treatment innovations have proliferated. Gaps between supply and demand may be growing. This study examined whether socioeconomic status has a differential effect on waits for surgical and adjuvant radiation treatment (RT) of breast cancer in Canada and the US. Methods. Ontario and California cancer registries provided 929 and 984 breast cancer cases diagnosed between 1998 and 2000 in diverse urban and rural places. Residence-based socioeconomic data were taken from censuses. Cancer care variables were reliably abstracted from health records: stage, receipt of surgery and RT, and waits from diagnosis to initial and initial to adjuvant treatment. Median waits were compared within- and between-country with the non-parametric Mann-Whitney U-test. Categorically long, age-adjusted wait comparisons used the Mantel-Haenszel chi-square test. Results. There were significant associations between lower socioeconomic status and longer surgical waits, lower access to adjuvant RT and to longer RT waits across diverse places in California. None were observed in Ontario. The two cohorts did not practically differ on access to surgery or on surgical waits. Compared with their counterparts in California, low-income Ontarians, particularly those in small urban places, gained greater access to RT, while high-income Americans had shorter waits for RT. Conclusions. This historical study contextualized Canada’s “waiting-list problems” with evidence on breast cancer care, where lower income Americans seemed to have waited as long as similar Canadians. Many more low-income Americans seemed to experience the longest wait of all for adjuvant care. They simply did not receive it. In contrast to stark American socioeconomic inequity, this study evidenced remarkable equity in Canadian breast cancer care.

Abstract:
Mutual exclusion is one of the mechanisms that can be used to solve concurrency problems in the operating system. In the operating system, there are resources that cannot be shared at the same time, such as printers. These kinds of resources are called critical resources. Programs that use critical resources are called entering critical regions/sections. Programmers cannot rely on the operating system to understand and enforce these limits. The mutual exclusion settlement process was submitted by several experts. One of them is Lamport with a method known as Lamport's Bakery Algorithm. The work process of Lamport's Bakery Algorithm starts from the buyer entering the store and receiving the sequence number. If there is a waiter who is idle (not being / will serve other buyers), then the buyer directly asks for service from the waiter. If not, then the buyer sits in the buyer's waiting area and waits until his turn. Shoppers who have finished being served out of the store and waiters who are idle serve the lowest numbered buyers who are waiting at the waiting place of the buyer

Abstract:
In spite of section 1(2) of the 1989 Children Act,* the time taken to conclude care proceedings has been getting longer year on year since the Act's implementation. The average length of proceedings in 2001 was about 47 weeks and a significant number of children are having to wait over two years for a court decision. Chris Beckett and Bridget McKeigue looked at a small group of cases where children have waited for over two years. In this article they examine the consequences for the children of this long wait in immediate terms, such as number of placement moves and assessments experienced, and in the long term as a result of reduced options and possible psychological harm. They then consider the possible causes of these long waits, identifying a number of factors but focusing in particular on the long and repetitive assessment process that seems to have typically taken place.

Abstract:
Abstract A core performance target for the English National Health Service (NHS) concerns waiting times at Emergency Departments (EDs), with the aim of minimising long waits. We investigate the drivers of long waits. We analyse weekly data for all major EDs in England from April 2011 to March 2016. A Poisson model with ED fixed effects is used to explore the impact on long (> 4 h) waits of variations in demand (population need and patient case-mix) and supply (emergency physicians, introduction of a Minor Injury Unit (MIU), inpatient bed occupancy, delayed discharges and long-term care). We assess overall ED waits and waits on a trolley (gurney) before admission. We also investigate variation in performance among EDs. The rate of long overall waits is higher in EDs serving older patients (4.2%), where a higher proportion of attendees leave without being treated (15.1%), in EDs with a higher death rate (3.3%) and in those located in hospitals with greater bed occupancy (1.5%). These factors are also significantly associated with higher rates of long trolley waits. The introduction of a co-located MIU is significantly and positively associated with long overall waits, but not with trolley waits. There is substantial variation in waits among EDs that cannot be explained by observed demand and supply characteristics. The drivers of long waits are only partially understood but addressing them is likely to require a multi-faceted approach. EDs with high rates of unexplained long waits would repay further investigation to ascertain how they might improve.

Abstract:
Smartphones, with their “pervasive presence” in contact with our bodies, have come to act as sensory prosthetics that mediate our experience of the city. They activate new possibilities of navigating the urban, such that we can find exactly what we want, rather than what has been placed before us. This article argues that smartphone technologies produce a more fluid engagement with urban space: where space is not so much “given” as “enacted.” In this context, notions of “legibility” take on new algorithmic and virtual forms. Thus, according to Hamilton and colleagues, where “the legible city waited to be read, the transparent city of data waits to be accessed.” Here, stable features dissolve as urban space becomes increasingly fluid and contingent, no longer limited by static patterns of inhabitation. Instead, how we move and where we move shift in accordance with the kinds of urban resources being activated at any given location, at any given moment, and in conjunction with the shifting vicissitudes of the crowd. In this context, the virtual (in its technological definition of cyber-enabled or -enacted space) mediates and activates the virtual (in its philosophical definition pertaining to the capacities of an entity that may or may not be manifested depending on context). The article considers the implications of this novel spatial mediation using an ontological perspective informed by complex adaptive systems theory, which considers forms and objects not as absolutes but rather as contingent entities activated through interactions.

Abstract:
Background The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of surgical delays on short- and long-term survival among colon cancer patients. Methods Adult patients undergoing surgery for stage I, II, or III colon cancer were identified from the National Cancer Database (2010-2016). After categorization by wait times from diagnosis to surgery (<1 week, 1-3 weeks, 3-6 weeks, 6-9 weeks, 9-12 weeks, and >12 weeks), 30-day mortality, 90-day mortality, and 5-year overall survival were compared between patients both overall and after stratification by pathological disease stage. Results Among 187 394 colon cancer patients, 24.2% waited <1 week, 30.5% waited 1-3 weeks, 29.0% waited 3-6 weeks, 9.7% waited 6-9 weeks, 3.3% waited 9-12 weeks, and 3.3% waited >12 weeks for surgery. Patients undergoing surgery 3-6 weeks after colon cancer diagnosis exhibited the best 30-day mortality (1.3%), 90-day mortality (2.3%), and 5-year overall survival (71.8%) ( P < .001 for all). After risk-adjusting for confounders, all wait times beyond 6 weeks were associated with worse 5-year overall survival (6-9 weeks: HR 1.10, 95% CI 1.06-1.15; 9-12 weeks: HR 1.25, 95% CI 1.18-1.33; >12 weeks: HR 1.43, 95% CI 1.35-1.52; P < .001 for all). Subgroup analysis after stratification by disease stage demonstrated that patients with stage III colon cancer were able to wait up to 9 weeks before exhibiting worse 5-year overall survival, compared to 6 weeks for patients with stage I or II disease. Conclusions Colon cancer patients should undergo surgery 3-6 weeks after diagnosis, as all surgical delays beyond 6 weeks were associated with worse 30-day mortality, 90-day mortality, and 5-year overall survival.

Abstract:
In this thesis, we consider two types of positional games; Waiter-Client and Client-Waiter games. Each round in a biased (a:b) game begins with Waiter offering a+b free elements of the board to Client. Client claims a elements among these and the remaining b elements are claimed by Waiter. Waiter wins in a Waiter-Client game if he can force Client to fully claim a winning set, otherwise Client wins. In a Client-Waiter game, Client wins if he can claim a winning set himself, else Waiter wins. We estimate the threshold bias of four different (1:q) Waiter-Client and Client-Waiter games. This is the unique value of Waiter's bias q at which the player with a winning strategy changes. We find its asymptotic value for both versions of the complete-minor and non-planarity games and give bounds for both versions of the non-r-colourability and k-SAT games. Our results show that these games exhibit a heuristic called the probabilistic intuition. We also find sharp probability thresholds for the appearance of a graph in the random graph G(n,p) on which Waiter and Client win the (1:q) Waiter-Client and Client-Waiter Hamiltonicity games respectively.

Abstract:
The advent of robotics and automation leaves few industries untouched. Today, robots assist in everything between production lines at automotive manufacturing plants to home cleaning. One area that remains relatively untouched by robotics however, is the restaurant industry. The purpose of this bachelor’s thesis was to develop a prototype designed to assist with one of the tasks a restaurant waiter faces - food delivery. In order to accomplish this the robot must be able to drive and navigate in a restaurant environment and deliver food, all the while communicating with both restaurant staff and guests. The project resulted in a differentially steered robot that navigates using infrared, radio-frequency identification and ultrasonic modules. An elevator mechanism was devised to present the food to the guests. The user interface consists of a screen and a keypad. The prototype was tested successfully on an oval track measuring 3 by 1 meters. The tests showed that such a robot could likely be implemented in most restaurant settings.

Abstract:
Repatriation is an increasingly significant issue in the museum world. It is concerned with the return of cultural artefacts that have been previously traded or sold into foreign countries or institutions, either at the behest of the indigenous people or the initiative of the institution holding them. This dissertation explores the role of repatriation in modern New Zealand museums and its role in furthering the often contentious relationship between Maori and museum staff. It has a specific focus on the excavation and repatriation of human remains at Wairau Bar in Marlborough. It critiques an unpublished history of the Bar written by independent historian David Armstrong, which was commissioned by Rangitane in 2009. My overall argument disputes Armstrong's portrayal of Roger Duff, ethnologist at the Canterbury Museum, as the leader of a surreptitious excavation who was consistently underhand and secretive in his dealings with Rangitane. I counter Armstrong's claims to demonstrate that Duff valued an open and transparent relationship with Rangitane and respected their cultural attitudes to ancestral remains. I conclude that these remain core values in both modern repatriation policies and museum relations with Maori. My contextual discussion draws largely on secondary scholarship and journal articles while my conclusions about Wairau Bar are largely based on primary archives and Armstrong's report.

Abstract:
This project focuses on balancing a drinking glass, to be able to transport it without the contents being spilled. It is designed with the aim of replacing a waiter in a restaurant or bar environment, but the technology itself could well be applied on mobile cup holders in cars or boats for instance. The core of the project is to study how and if it is possible to create a platform capable of balancing a drinking glass when exposed to different acceleration forces. This report describes one way of constructing this cup holder, with explanations of how the hardware has been designed and put together as well as how the software was written to make the components work together. The objective was to tilt the platform so that the acceleration resultant always was aligned with the z-axis of the sensor. The balancing part was divided in two separate systems, each controlling one rotation around two perpendicular axes. The rotation was controlled by two DCmotors, which counter forces that occur when the prototype is tilted and accelerated in different directions. To measure these movements, an IMU sensor containing both an accelerometer and a gyroscope was used. This sensor was placed in the center of rotation to increase sensor accuracy. To relate the input signal from the sensor to the output signal to the motors, a PIDcontroller was used. It was studied whether mathematical modelling or experimental testing provided the best method to determine the parameter values for this PID-controller. To test the performance, data about acceleration and relative angle to the acceleration resultant was gathered. This showed how high accelerations the system could handle, to evaluate if the system could be used in a restaurant or a bar environment. It also showed how much the platform was tilting in relation to the acceleration resultant, which determines if the liquid would stay in the glass. Additionally, a survey was created to gather opinions regarding robots in a restaurant or bar environment. The implementation is deemed possible and the survey showed that there is a great interest for this product. A clear majority answered that they would be attracted to a restaurant or a bar with robotic waiters. The study of three different ways to apply the derivative part of the PIDcontroller concludes that the use of the gyroscope was the best for this application, despite its inability to react on acceleration from linear motion. Experimental testing proved most time efficient to determine the parameter values for the PID-controller, but the non-linearized mathematical model of the system that is presented could well serve as a foundation to further improve this controller.

McCarthy, Henry Homer James. "The Nature and Origin of Saline Groundwater in the Wairau Valley, Marlborough, New Zealand." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Geological Sciences, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/2256.

Full text
Abstract:
In the Wairau Valley 40 km southwest of Blenheim, elevated salinities are present in the groundwater below a depth of approximately 15 m, to the north of the Wairau Fault. Saline water is present very close to the surface between the Southern Hills and the Wairau Fault. Highest concentrations are located in well O28/w/0219 with total dissolved solids concentrations approximately 31,000 mg/L. Only a few wells in the study area have intercepted the saline groundwater. A report by Taylor (2003) has identified the groundwater below the Holocene terrace surface is recharged from Southern Hills runoff, however the Wairau Fault has a significant impact on the groundwater flow on the south bank acting as a semi-permeable barrier to groundwater flow from the southern Hills streams identified by several spring which emerge on the fault trace. The scope of this investigation was to identify the extent of the saline groundwater in the Homelands area and to attempt to define the origin of the highly saline groundwater. Furthermore, to define the groundwater flow path below the upper terrace surface to recharge the Wairau Valley Aquifer. The Multi-Electrode Resistivity technique was used to define the extent of the saline groundwater. This shows the saline groundwater is ubiquitous at depth in the study area. The depth to the freshwater/saline water interface varies laterally in the resistivity profiles. A major control on the presence of the groundwater salinity is considered to be the permeability of the gravel. Gravels with a higher permeability are probably washed of any residual salinity that may have been present in the past. Investigations into the origins of the saline groundwater were completed using stable isotope analysis (¹⁸O, ²H, and ¹³C), hydrochemistry and age dating techniques (³H and ¹⁴C). Due to the complex chemistry a single source could not be identified, however two methods were identified as the most likely. This was evaporative concentration of fresh water in the Wairau Valley, or the upward migration from the Wairau Fault of formation water probably of seawater origin. The stable isotope data fits best with an evaporative concentration of freshwater within the Wairau Valley, however, ratios of chemical constituents are very similar to other formation waters found in other parts of the world. Stream gauging of streams on the south bank show no significant water loss in the reaches north of the Wairau Fault. Therefore, recharge must be crossing the Fault trace as groundwater. Boundary Creek looses all of its surface flow for most of the year upon reaching the valley floor. Bounday Creek has washed out sections of the Wairau Fault and Major terrace riser between Wr 1 and Wr 2 terrace surfaces. It is proposed that groundwater flowing in the gravels reworked by Boundary Creek is the major recharge source for the Wairau Valley Aquifer.

Ar ddiwedd y traethawd cynhwysir dau atodiad. Mae'r cyntaf yn cynnwys rhestr o eitemau na cheir mohonynt yn llyfryddiaethau David Jenkins, ynghyd ä detholiad o'r rhai mwyaf diddorol. Yn yr all atodiad ceir casgliad byr o lythyrau'r bardd ynghyd ag adysgrif o gyfweliad teledu rhyngddo ac Aneirin Talfan Davies.
