Abstract:
Māori conceptualisations of ancestral environs and its connections to memory often reside in the realm of whakapapa (genealogy) having originated from Papatūānuku and Ranginui (primordial ancestors and gods), their loving embrace, and their eventual separation that carved the space for nourishing lands and waters. These stories of whakapapa were passed down intergenerationally through many Māori creative expressions, including waiata (songs), haka (posture dance), pūrākau (stories), whakataukī (proverbial sayings), ruruku (sequence of incantations), and karakia (prayers). This has resulted in a genealogically and environmentally derived Māori music theory. The disruption of settler-colonialism aimed to sever whakapapa from the memory as being reflected in our ancestral environs and within the hearts of Māori. ‘He Whiringa Wainuku’ refers to the weaving of water elements on earth and sets the imagery for decolonising the interconnections of whakapapa, land, water, and memory through Kaupapa Māori methodologies and Māori creative expressions.

Abstract:
It is generally accepted practice that research writing should include a review of the methodology and methods designed to increase the chances of the discovery of new knowledge in the field of inquiry. However, in indigenous research, the over-reliance on Western paradigms and methodological frameworks can be problematic, because they do not consider the ontology and epistemology located in ancestral practices. By considering the Māori doctoral thesis: ‘Tangohia mai te taura’ (Take this rope), this article argues that a methodological approach for indigenous researchers must be extended to embrace many forms of knowledge, including Kaupapa Māori as an approach to scholarly research, informed by historical narratives, and knowledge based on oral repositories of experience that exist in indigenous waiata (songs), oriori (chants), karakia (prayers) and pūrākau (storytelling). As an extension of this, an indigenous inquiry that seeks to exhume lived experiences of injustice must also frame the genealogically connected, orally accounted experiences of communities as valued repositories of knowledge when designing a methodological approach to filmmaking.

Abstract:
The numerous iwi (tribes) and hapū (subtribes) of Te Tai Tokerau (Northland) have a long whakapapa (genealogy) of influential leaders that have made a significant impact on the Māori world and beyond. However, ruinous media narratives that focus without relent on poverty, low employment, inadequate housing, and lagging educational outcomes—particularly among Māori—continue to negatively impact the ways students from this region define their identity. This paper presents a number of strengths-based narratives—focusing on tūpuna (ancestors) from Te Tai Tokerau whakapapa—that act as counter-narratives to this rhetoric. The paper discusses how these narratives can be used as powerful pedagogical tools that enhance Te Tai Tokerau Māori students’ self-efficacy, aspiration, optimism, and cultural pride, presenting them as powerful agents of their own destiny. This paper draws on data produced from a Marsden-funded study—led by Te Tai Tokerau descendents—that has collected and re-presented multifaceted hapū/iwi-based narratives that celebrate Te Tai Tokerau distinctiveness, success, history, and identity. This wider study has examined, contextualised, and celebrated diverse characteristics recurring in Te Tai Tokerau pūrākau (genealogical stories), pepeha (tribal sayings), waiata (songs), karakia (incantations), televisual materials, and written histories.

Abstract:
When Leonard Cohen died in November 2016, many people the world over felt very sad and indeed bereft, at the loss of such a great artist, poet and songwriter. It felt, in Auden’s (1958) words on Freud’s death, another example of: For every day they dieamong us, those who were doing us some good, who knew it was never enough buthoped to improve a little by living. (p. 68) The title of this paper comes from Leonard’s 1984 song “Dance Me to the End of Love”, and has often seemed a powerful description of what a mother provides for her baby and what we as therapists provide to our clients. We try to help them “dance through the panic” and ultimately to feel safely gathered in — firstly with us, within the therapeutic relationship, and in due course within themselves. We provide a “promise of home”, or at least some hope for our clients that they might be able to find that individual sense of self within themselves and connection to others, which feels like “home”. Abstract:
Large-scale transformation and modification of landscapes have occurred across most catchments in Aotearoa-New Zealand (A-NZ) in the past 200-years (mainly mid-1800s to mid- 1900s). This has been mainly through large-scale removal of indigenous forest and draining of wetlands to a landscape dominated by urban settlement and highly modified landscapes. The expansive shift to pastoral farming and urban settlement, under a colonial settlement vision has increasingly led to detrimental cumulative impacts on ecological health. Environmental decline has been tightly linked to significant adverse impacts on Māori (the Indigenous people of A-NZ) wellbeing. For Māori, this has been out of balance and step with an indigenous-based vision of A-NZ. To understand how a Māori worldview can help drive transformation in the health of our catchments and their communities, we argue that an Ao Māori (Māori worldview) framing for catchment management is necessary with reference to three catchment case studies (Kaipara, Waikato, and Waiapu). These case studies were chosen because they provide tangible examples of resurgence in the use and understanding of mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) next to co-governance, co-management, and decision-making. In the Kaipara, the collaborative governance model ensured that all parties’ views were understood and factored into decision making and this has led to growing social equity and more sustainable relationships with the whenua. Similarly, in the Waikato, co-governance of the waterways has increased the efficiency and effectiveness of the process. Knowledge sharing and engagement has directly driven positive environmental outcomes. So too for the Waiapu, where increased hapū/iwi capability and capacity has increased social cohesion and implementation of targeted actions to mitigate climate change impacts. We explore how by adopting a holistic approach to environmental stewardship, and having intimate knowledge at place, Māori thinking has the potential to rejuvenate environmental management, emphasising the necessity of partnership-based approaches.

Abstract:
Abstract Mecyclothorax palikea, sp.n. is described from the vicinity of Palikea, southern Waianae Range, Oahu, HI, USA and is assigned to Britton's Mecyclothorax flavomarginatus species group. Cladistic analysis, based on 20 morphological characters and including several outgroup taxa, places Mecyclothorax impunctatus Liebherr of Molokai as adelphotaxon to the other eight species of the group, with subsequent speciation events successively isolating M. sharpi Britton of West Maui versus a clade of seven Oahu species. Phylogenetic relationships among the Oahu clade species posit three historical speciation events vicariating ancestors on the western Waianae and eastern Koolau Ranges. Mecyclothorax palikea is placed as adelphotaxon to M. carteri (Perkins), a species allopatrically distributed to the north in the Waianae, corroborating existence of southern and northern areas of endemism within the Waianae Range. Relative ages of the respective volcanoes housing M. flavomarginatus group species — Waianae (3.7 million years ago), Koolau (2.6 million years ago), Eastern Molokai (1.8 million years ago), West Maui (1.3 million years ago)—imply that ancestral occupation of Oahu by this group occurred subsequent to completion of the shield building phases of Oahu's two volcanoes, Waianae and Koolau. Diversification within the group on Oahu was associated with vicariance events that occurred within a terrestrial environment. Whereas all four species of the M. flavomarginatus group occupying Waianae Range habitats have been observed recently in nature, collection of M. flavomarginatus in 1906 represents the most recent record for any M. flavomarginatus group species in the Koolau Range, indicating the importance of conserving appropriate Waianae Range habitats in order to preserve representative biodiversity in this species group.

Abstract:
Education is an effort to foster and develop the human person both from the spiritual and physical aspects as well as gradually. In the learning process it is necessary to motivate students so that they can improve learning outcomes. One of the types of motivation is by giving reward. The purpose of this study was to analyze the understanding of teachers and the implementation of presenting awards to SDK Waiara students. The method used is descriptive qualitative by referring to the qualitative analysis of the data according to Miles and Huberman. The results showed the understanding of the SDK Waira teacher's understanding of the concept of giving. However, some respondents who were interviewed provided information that they had given rewards in class. An award that impacts students' attention in learning.

Abstract:
The link between dairy farm systems and cost of environmental compliance is not always clear. A survey of Waikato dairy farmers was conducted to establish the real (non-modelled) cost of compliance with environmental regulation in the region. Quantitative and qualitative data were gathered to improve understanding of compliance costs and implementation issues for a range of Waikato farm systems. The average oneoff capital cost of compliance determined through a survey approach was $1.02 per kg milksolids, $1490 per hectare and $403 per cow. Costs experienced by Waikato farmers have exceeded average economic farm surplus for the region in the past 5 years. As regulation increases there are efficiencies to be gained through implementing farm infrastructure and farm management practice to best match farm system intensity. Abstract:
Performance data, during the start-up period, are presented for constructed wetlands treating subsurface drainage from dairy pastures in Waikato (rain-fed) and Northland (irrigated), North Island, New Zealand. The wetlands comprised an estimated 1 and 2% of the drained catchment areas, respectively. Nitrate concentrations were high in the drainage inflows at both sites (medians 10 g m-3 at Waikato and 6.5 g m-3 at Northland), but organic N was also an important form of N at Waikato (37% of TN). Comparison of wetland inflow and outflow nutrient concentrations showed overall nutrient reductions during passage through the wetlands for NO3-N (34 and 94% for medians, respectively), TN (56 and 33%, respectively), and DRP (80%, Northland only). Median NH4-N (both sites) and DRP (Waikato) concentrations showed apparent increases between the wetland inlets and outlets. However, a mass balance calculated for the 3 month preliminary monitoring periods showed substantial mass removal of DRP (80%) and all measured forms of N (NO3-N 78%, NH4-N 41%, Org-N 99.8% and TN 96%) in the Waikato wetland. Monitoring of these systems needs to be continued through a range of seasons and years to fully assess their long-term performance.

Abstract:
The effect of litter (dead vegetation) on establishment of an autumn-sown grass-legume-herb mix was investigated in non-cultivable hill country in Waikato (2013) and in Canterbury (2013, 2014, 2015). In Waikato, increasing litter height increased establishment of sown species by over 3-fold when comparing establishment from herbicide-treated swards with 7 cm or 0 cm (bare ground) of litter (660 versus 190 seedlings/m2). Only perennial ryegrass and white clover established of the seven oversown species in Waikato and none established in Canterbury. In Canterbury, soil surface temperatures were reduced and soil moisture was greater under 7 cm than 0 cm of litter, resulting in a 20% and 50% increase in average soil moisture content on the north and south aspects, respectively. It was concluded that litter enhanced establishment of perennial ryegrass and white clover in Waikato but the ameliorating effect of litter on the soil micro-climate was insufficient to enhance establishment in Canterbury. Abstract:
SUMMARYThe first reported New Zealand-acquired case of murine typhus occurred near Auckland in 1989. Since then, 72 locally acquired cases have been recorded from northern New Zealand. By 2008, on the basis of the timing and distribution of cases, it appeared that murine typhus was escalating and spreading southwards. To explore the presence ofRickettsia typhiin the Waikato region, we conducted a seroprevalence study, using indirect immunofluorescence, Western blot, and cross-adsorption assays of blood donor samples. Of 950 human sera from Waikato, 12 (1·3%) hadR. typhiantibodies. The seroprevalence forR. typhiwas slightly higher in northern Waikato (1·4%) compared to the south (1·2%; no significant difference,χ2P= 0·768 atP< 0·05). Our results extend the reported southern range ofR. typhiby 140 km and indicate it is endemic in Waikato. Evidence of pastRickettsia felisinfections was also detected in six sera. Globally,R. felisis an emerging disease of concern and this pathogen should also be considered when locally acquired rickettsiosis is suspected. If public health interventions are to be implemented to reduce the risk of rickettsioses as a significant public health problem, improvements in rickettsial diagnostics and surveillance will be necessary.

Resulting from the examination of the type specimens of the southern African bee species originally described in the genus Osmia, the taxonomic placement of 19 species is formally established. The following combinations are formalised: Osmia atrorufa Friese, 1913 to Wainia (Caposmia) atrorufa (Friese) comb. nov.; Osmia ausica Cockerell, 1944 to Hoplitis (Anthocopa) ausica (Cockerell) comb. nov.; Osmia capicola Friese, 1909 (replacement name for Osmia capensis Cameron, 1906) to Capicola capicola (Friese) comb. nov.; Osmia flavipes Friese, 1909 to Afranthidium (Nigranthidium) flavipes (Friese) comb. nov.; Osmia forficulina Cockerell, 1921 to Hoplitis (Anthocopa) forficulina (Cockerell) comb. nov.; Osmia karooensis Brauns, 1926 to Hoplitis (Anthocopa) karooensis (Brauns) comb. nov.; Osmia mediorufa Cockerell, 1932 to Hoplitis (Anthocopa) mediorufa (Cockerell) comb. nov.; Osmia namaquaensis Friese, 1913 to Hoplitis (Anthocopa) namaquaensis (Friese) comb. nov.; Osmia natalensis Cockerell, 1920 to Wainia (Caposmia) natalensis (Cockerell) comb. nov.; Osmia neavei Cockerell, 1936 to Hoplitis (Anthoc- opa) neavei (Cockerell) comb. nov.; Osmia ogilviae Cockerell, 1932 to Hoplitis (Anthocopa) ogilviae (Cockerell) comb. nov.; Osmia ornatula Cockerell, 1932 to Hoplitis (Anthocopa) ornatula (Cockerell) comb. nov.; Osmia orthodonta Cokkerell, 1932 to Hoplitis (Anthocopa) orthodonta (Cockerell) comb. nov.; Osmia pachyceps Friese, 1922 to Othinosmia (Megaloheriades) pachyceps (Friese) comb. nov.; Osmia piliventris Friese, 1913 to Hoplitis (Anthocopa) piliventris (Friese) comb. nov.; Osmia reginae Cockerell, 1932 to Hoplitis (Anthocopa) reginae (Cockerell) comb. nov.; Osmia rhodognatha Cockerell, 1932 to Hoplitis (Anthocopa) rhodognatha (Cockerell) comb. nov.; Osmia similis Friese, 1909 to Hoplitis (Anthocopa) similis (Friese) comb. nov.; Osmia turneri Cockerell, 1937 to Hoplitis (Anthocopa) turneri (Cockerell) comb. nov. The following new synonyms are established: Hoplitis (Anthocopa) namaquaensis (Friese) = Osmia ausica Cockerell syn. nov.; Capicola capicola (Friese) (replacement name for Osmia capensis Cameron) = Capicola braunsiana Friese, 1911 syn. nov., Capicola aurescens Cockerell, 1932 syn. nov., Hesperapis turneri Cockerell, 1934 syn. nov., Hesperapis obscura Cockerell, 1934 syn. nov.; Unlike the statement in Michener (2000: 403) Osmia? capensis Cameron, 1905 is probably not a synonym of Capicola braunsiana Friese given its body length. The type seems to be lost and the identity of this species remains unclear. Hoplitis (Anthocopa) similis (Friese) = Osmia forficulina Cockerell syn. nov; Wainia (Wainiella) sakaniensis (Cockerell, 1936) = Heriades albobarbatus Cockerell, 1937 syn. nov., Heriades debilicornis Cockerell, 1940 syn. nov., Heriades perpolitus Cockerell, 1947 syn. nov., Heriades otaviensis Cockerell, 1947 syn. nov. The status of Wainia (Caposmia) elizabethae (Friese, 1909) spec. rev. as a valid species is restored. Hoplitis (Anthocopa) conchophila Kuhlmann spec. nov., Wainia (Caposmia) gessorum Kuhlmann spec. nov. and the male of Wainia (Caposmia) atrorufa (Friese) are described for the first time. A checklist and an illustrated key to the seven southern African species of Wainia is provided. Notes on known flower visiting and nesting of Hoplitis (Anthocopa) and Wainia are given under the relevant species.

Abstract:
Traditional marriage is actually a bond between men and women who are united through traditional marriage rituals by going through various stages in the custom, as a legal customary marriage process between husband and wife. Customary marriage is not only a bond between husband and wife, but involves the entire extended family of both parties, relatives and tribes or clans who are part of the members of the couple legalized in the customary marriage. Through traditional marriages, kinship and kinship relations are increasing and increasingly displaying a social relationship that creates a familial bond between the two parties. This kinship and kinship relationship is a sign that customary marriage is not only legalizing husband and wife but more than that, embracing the big family and the relationships in the social life of the community become full of brotherly bonds with each other. With traditional marriages that are structured in an area, it is proof that the community is able to maintain and preserve the value of the traditional marriage in social life and is able to provide education to the community and the younger generation to maintain the elements and values ??contained in the traditional marriage. In the midst of increasingly rapid developments, the role of indigenous peoples has become more active in maintaining the nobility of these customary values. Therefore, the participation of all parties in social groups is important because without the involvement of all parties from within the family, community, tribal/clan members, local government and customary stakeholder institutions as well as society in general in social groups, so that cultural heritage cannot be lost. only belongs to individuals but belongs to all people in social groups, because it is a sign and identity of every community in social life.

Abstract:
Populations of adult Sitona lepidus were sampled from five irrigated and five non-irrigated dairy pastures in the Waikato from November 1998 to April 1999. Under irrigated conditions, the presence of a second peak of adults with significantly more tenerals present provides evidence of a second generation over the summer months. The importance of the role of moisture in the development of S. lepidus was further demonstrated by the differences in the development of eggs in the calyces of sexually mature females. Egg development was significantly greater in females in irrigated pastures. Onset of rain after a dry period resulted in rapid egg development in females in non-irrigated pastures. These findings explain why the summer dry La Nina weather conditions in the Waikato led to farmer observations of a reduced impact of S. lepidus on clovers in Waikato pastures in 1998 and 1999.

Abstract:
A ryegrass breeding programme to improve the seasonal growth and plant persistence of perennial and hybrid ryegrasses in the Waikato began at AgResearch Ruakura, Hamilton in 2001. One approach was to characterise the genetic diversity of the naturalised populations within 26 dairy farms from different districts around the Waikato and Bay of Plenty (BOP) regions. Plants from 26 individual breeding lines were evaluated as single spaced plants over a 3-year period in comparison with three commercialised ryegrass cultivars. Principal Component Analysis was used to order the plant populations in accordance with the observed plant variables of seasonal growth pattern, tillering ability, leaf size and extension, and the incidence of crown rust. A hierarchical cluster analysis of the wild populations revealed two distinct plant groups. A mix of large leaf Italian Lolium multiflorum and hybrid plants were typical from the warmer drier areas of the BOP. The Italian ryegrass was prone to severe crown rust infection whereas the hybrids were more resistant. Shorter, narrow leaved and densely tillered plants with a high rust infection dominated the Waikato populations. Ecotypes that maintained high plant tiller density throughout the seasons had the best persistence. Plants that displayed an improvement in seasonal yield and tillering over the commercial cultivars were considered an important genetic source to develop new persistent cultivars for the Waikato and BOP regions. Abstract:

The book “The Tail of the Fish” was publised in 1968 and written by a Te Aupouri kuia, Matire Kereama (nee: Hoeft) of the far north of Aotearoa, New Zealand. I grew up with this book as my grandmother would read the stories to me at bedtime. Although my comprehension of each story was very vague and unrelatable to my life at that time, today, I find myself totally absorbed by the historical content and knowledge encapsulated in each chapter. I completed a Masters of Applied Indigenous Knowledge at Te Wananga o Aotearoa in 2017, entitled; Tales of the singing fish: He tangi wairua. I compsed twelve waiata (Maori songs) of which ten of the waiata was information extracted from ten chapters of the book. The other two waiata were composed specifically for my people of the Te Rarawa tribe, namely, Ahipara. This waiata is a dedication to Huirangi Tahana of the Ngāti Māhanga people of Waingaro Marae located 36 kilometers to the west of Ngaruawahia in the Waikato district.
