Crawford, Joel M. "Performance Practice of Brass Band Music of the American Civil War: A Perspective from Saxton's Cornet Band." UKnowledge, 2015. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/music_etds/53.

Full text
Abstract:
This project examines source materials, methods, and instruments required for creating an informed period performance of military brass band music from the American Civil War. The rapid development of brass bands in America combined with the volatility of the war meant that much of the development of these styles were not formally documented. To compound this problem an instrumentalist trained on modern instruments who plays on an instrument from the period will produce a sound highly colored and influenced by their sound concept on a modern instrument. Experience with the instrument and attention to their idiosyncrasies will offer the closest possible sound to bands in the Civil War era. This project examines primary musical sources as well as considerations on how to properly approach a period performance of brass band music of this era. Central to this examination is the author's training and experience as a member of the Civil War period performance ensemble Saxton's Cornet Band.

Abstract:
This study aims to understand and explain World Bank&rsquo
s changing approach to poverty since 1990. Established as a development institution and as one of the leading members of development community, the World Bank has nearly turned out to be a poverty alleviation institution especially from late 1990s on. This change is a reflection of a process in which the Bank shapes its approach to poverty not only in accordance with its own goals but also in the framework of what happens in wider social, economic and political spheres of which the Bank is a part as a subject that both shapes and is shaped by them to a certain extent. Consequently, a remarkable change is observed in the Bank&rsquo
s approach, and this process of change is investigated in this study in two sub-periods that are characterized by ruptures in continuity. The first period more or less between 1990 and 1997 is characterized by the Bank&rsquo
s neoliberal approach to poverty, which mainly assumes poverty as a complementary element of structural adjustment programs in countries they are implemented. The second period from 1997 up to present is characterized, on the other hand, by a &ldquo
third way&rdquo
approach to poverty which mainly assumes poverty-as-social-exclusion as an indispensable central element of a renewed hegemonic project. In this study, the traces of these ruptures and the continuity in the Bank&rsquo
s approach are followed through their reflections on Turkey by making a close reading of the Bank&rsquo
s documents about poverty in Turkey.

Wimmer, Ryan Elwood. "The Walker War Reconsidered." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2010. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2461.

Full text
Abstract:
In July of 1853, Chief Wakara's band of Utes clashed in a series of violent confrontations with the Mormon settlers. This conflict is known as the Walker War. Many complex factors contributed to this war. After some earlier violence between Mormons and different bands of Utes between 1847 and 1851, the Mormons continued their quick expansion settling on Ute lands. From 1851 to 1853 Mormon and Ute relations continued to decline as Mormons expanded their settlements occupying Ute hunting grounds. In addition to these land encroachments, new laws were enacted regulating trade between the Spanish and Utes by Brigham Young. The most notable regulation on trade prohibited the Spanish and Ute slave trade. All these trade regulations hurt the Ute economy, particularly the most powerful equestrian Ute band, the Cheverets led by Chief Wakara. In the spring of 1853 Governor Brigham Young ordered out the state militia to arrest Mexican traders and to capture Wakara for engaging in the slave trade. Wakara had previously established a friendly relationship with Young and had invited the Mormons to settle his lands in Sanpete. Wakara had become committed to peaceful relations and cooperation with Young and the Mormon people. Wakara remained true to his desire for friendly relations even after seeing his economic status undermined by Mormon settlers. Young as well was committed to staying on peaceful terms with the Utes. Their followers, on the other hand, had difficulties overcoming the cultural divide. After the murder of a member of Wakara's band in July of 1853 by settler James Ivie, Wakara's band waged a series of raids against Mormon settlements. Wakara himself, however, was not involved in the war and continually tried to sue for peace. The war has been mislabeled with Wakara's name; he was not really involved in the violence. Yet it was indeed a war. The war had a great impact on the Mormon settlers. Settlers abandoned their homes and had to move into forts. For the Mormons involved, this conflict was neither small nor inconsequential; it was a major disruption involving a great portion of the Utah Territory.

Abstract:
The research project uses still life as a means of exploring current events of violence and oppression. These events are represented through juxtaposing plastic toys with organic objects. The toys include a range of popular generic toys such as army men, cowboys and Indians and toy soldiers. The organic objects were selected for their relationship to the specific event being represented. The toys and organic objects were positioned to create interesting and logical compositions. Themes of the series include opposing objects and ideas pitched against each other such as plastic/organic, perpetrator/victim, violence/peacefulness and destruction/sustenance. Within each work the plastic toys take on the demeanor of the tyrant(s), whereas the organic objects adopt the role of the victim(s). The research project uses these themes to convey the message that violence is both a barbaric way of dealing with conflict and a senseless form of self-expression. I have used symbols and metaphors to build a visual language. For the language to be translated accurately a great deal of research has taken place into the appropriate still life objects for each work. Each work incorporates metaphors and or symbols for both the oppressor and victim within the event being represented. The studio outcome of this research project, Silent Bang, includes a series of highly detailed finished paintings of various scales. Silent Bang as a body of work is colourful and aims to be aesthetically pleasing in addition to conveying a powerful message that incites interpretation.

Naqvi, Iman. "The War on Tobacco: The Impact of Advertising Bans on Tobacco Consumption." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2013. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/732.

Full text
Abstract:
ABSTRACT This study provides an empirical analysis of the effect of tobacco marketing regulation on unit sales, in order to evaluate the effectiveness these laws in the United States. The analysis did not find a significant effect of tobacco advertising expenditure on unit sales. Examination of advertising expenditure revealed that tobacco companies substituted banned forms of advertising for other marketing strategies, leading to little reduction in total advertising expenditure and a limited effect on sales. Furthermore, it found an unexpected positive relationship between the 1971 Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act and tobacco consumption; the ban on advertising and promotion actually increased sales by over 88 billion units. Additional empirical evidence is provided from studies performed by Fight Ordinances and Restrictions to Control and Eliminate Smoking (FORCES) and Saffer and Chaloupka that show correspondingly inconclusive results. The paper then discusses several policy implications and subsequent recommendations that follow from these results.

Abstract:

In this master thesis I investigate how to make projects more efficient. I did my thesis at the airborne radar division at Ericsson Microwave Systems (EMW). Their projects often cost more than estimated and they also tend to last longer than estimated.

The airborne radar division wants to know why the final result, in most cases exceed the budget and time plan. Their goal is to learn from the experience in previous projects and to gather all that experience in an experience base.

They gave me the task to start the process towards an experience base. The theory I base my result and conclusions on is The Experience Factory. The Experience Factory is an example of an experience base that was developed primarily for software projects. I started investigating projects at the airborne radar division trying to find common denominators (factors). I found some factors that I believe have a major impact on the projects. The projects really have to rely on these factors to be able to reach the goal of the projects. These factors are the first step towards an experience base. Starting a process towards an experience base is a work that takes many years especially at a company of this size. My thesis is a start towards the goal and in my result I present the factors I found and in the conclusions I give suggestions for the continuing work towards an experience base.

Koehler, Maren. "Architecture as a Mediating Technology: The Bank Lobby in Post-war North America." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2019. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/21331.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis advances an understanding of architecture as a mediating technology. It examines the spatial history of the bank lobby, with a particular focus on the relationship between the dramatic shift in post-war North American banking practices and bank lobby design. The thesis proposes that the bank lobby provided a key space for articulating the financialisation of society during the post-war period. The study makes an original contribution to the history of bank design and offers a new analytical perspective on the lobby, suggesting it as productive spatial type for the attention of architectural scholarship. Drawing on materialist media theory, science and technology studies and critical theory, the thesis positions the bank lobby as a mediating technology that organises the reception and distribution of people, objects and information, while hosting and shaping social, climatic, aesthetic and financial interactions. This definition of mediation emphasises the operativity of architectural settings rather than questions of style and authorship. Situated between interior and exterior, between the inner workings of the bank and the public space of the street and between standards and protocols of governance and organisation, the lobby serves as a spatial intermediary that is defined by its threshold condition. Considering the operativity of the bank lobby in this manner the thesis contributes to existing scholarship on the historical significance of transit spaces, such as arcades and corridors. The thesis argues that such a perspective enhances our understanding of the role of the lobby as part of larger historical processes. The three decades following World War II represented a period of transition from national financial regulation and expansion to global finance capitalism. A focus on the architectural arrangements within financial institutions during this period of economic transformation provides a pre-history of what is commonly denoted as postmodernity.

Howell, Jennifer Therese. "Popularizing historical taboos, transmitting postmemory: the French-Algerian War in the bande dessinée." Diss., University of Iowa, 2010. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/683.

Full text
Abstract:
In addition to proposing a survey and subsequent analysis of the French-Algerian War in French-language comics, also known as bandes dessinées, published in Algeria, France, and Belgium since the 1960s, my dissertation investigates the ways in which this medium re-appropriates textual and iconographic source materials. I argue that the integration or citation of various sources by artists functions to confer a measure of historical accuracy on their representation of history, to constitute a collective memory as well as personal postmemories of the war, and to re-contextualize problematic images so that they and the hegemonic discourses they reinforce may be deconstructed. Moreover, the bande dessinée mimics secondary schoolbook representations of the war in both Algeria and France in its recycling of problematic images such as Orientalist painting, colonial postcards, and iconic images of war. The recycling of textbook images has the double advantage of ensuring reader familiarity with these images and of inviting critical interpretations of them. By exploring how the bande dessinée reuses colonial images as well as critical histories in predominantly anti-colonialist narratives, I seek to explain how this popular medium uniquely problematizes questions of history, memory, and postcolonial identity related to French Algeria and its decolonization. It is my contention that, because historical bandes dessinées frequently include or reference authentic textual and iconographic source material documenting the repercussions of the French-Algerian war on various communities, they represent a valuable resource to middle and high school teachers looking to enrich the state-mandated history curriculum. By using the bande dessinée in this capacity, educators exploit this medium as both a historical document (whose objective is to transmit knowledge of the past) and a document of history (which allows scholars to retrace the evolution of public opinion).

Abstract:

Boer-Mah, Tessa. "An adze to grind : lithic resource procurement and reduction of ground stone adzes from Ban Non Wat, Northeast Thailand." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2008. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/21934.

Full text
Abstract:
Trade contributed to the formation of complex states in Southeast Asia during the historic period (1st millennium AD). It is thought that the antecedents of trade developed from prehistoric exchange networks starting in the Neolithic (2nd-3 rd millennium BC). The extent of such prehistoric networks is not clear, however, ground stone adzes have been identified as goods that were exchanged. The aim of this thesis is to examine the procurement of lithic resources at Ban Non Wat, northeast Thailand and to determine whether adzes were part of an exchange network. This thesis emphasises the relationships between procurement, reduction and the form of ground stone adzes recovered predominantly from Neolithic and Bronze Age contexts. Previous analyses in Thailand have suggested that adzes were exchanged in the Neolithic as part of a pan-regional network, but further examination is required to support this. The results from Ban Non Wat indicate that the exchange of ground stone adzes was not as common as some scholars have proposed. The detailed examination of adze reduction in this study demonstrates that use of traditional Southeast Asian adze typologies, severely limits the analysis of adze assemblages. This thesis has developed systemic models of direct access and exchange to address the question of lithic resource procurement. Significantly, these systemic models provide a methodological and theoretical framework which allows systems of adze procurement to be identified within a singlesite consumption context. This framework does not rely on distributional data from numerous sites, as has been the case for many studies of exchange. Often single-site studies of lithic resource procurement have relied on the analysis of quarries. However, this study is exceptional because it deals with a consumption/occupation context. The results show that the majority of adzes at Ban Non Wat were acquired through a direct access system of procurement and that a secondary source of cobbles was exploited. The systemic models of lithic resource procurement were successful in identifying lithic resource procurement at Ban Non Wat, and could be applied to similar assemblages in other parts of the world.

Full text
Abstract:
The Mzansi bank account, launched in the latter part of October 2004, arose out of the financial services charter and is aimed at low income, previously unbanked individuals and households. Since its inception, it has been supported by the following financial institutions: Amalgamated banks of South Africa (ABSA), Standard Bank of South Africa (SBSA), First National Bank (FNB), Nedbank (essentially the four major retail banks in South Africa) and the Postbank (a subsidiary of the Post Office). This study investigates the performance of the Mzansi account from both the customer and supporting financial institutions' perspective The investigation's primary objectives focused on determining how accessibility to financial services (and to the account itself) may be improved for customers, determining what Mzansi customers needs are, and how the account may be expanded or enhanced to meet these needs. The secondary objectives concentrated on problems the supporting financial institutions faced: improving accessibility for customers (without too costly an investment in supporting infrastructure), differentiating the product and service significantly from other competing institutions, limiting product cannibalisation (where the Mzansi account is chosen over higher order retail bank products) and limiting overall costs of the account to ensure profitability. The research methodology consisted of a literature study and empirical research that in turn encompassed administering survey questionnaires to current Mzansi customers. The literature study focused on both national and international attempts at banking the unbanked, distilled common learnings from these attempts and ultimately described best practices with particular reference to improving accessibility to financial services and tailoring financial services options to meet the most critical needs of the unbanked market. The literature study also found that a definite business case exists for financial institutions - vii - willing to pursue this market, provided that the core value proposition was adequately adapted. Previous findings on how to avoid product cannibalisation, as well as how to differentiate products and services to entrench greater customer appeal completed the literature study. The empirical research encompassed the development of a survey questionnaire aimed at understanding five core research areas: the Mzansi customer profile (for a sample of one hundred and forty seven existing customers and transacting at Gauteng branches and outlets and evenly distributed across each of the supporting financial institutions), gauging how well customers understood their accounts, determining the service customers had received, understanding customer transaction and the value they attach to these transactions, and finally affording customers the opportunity to suggest ways in which the account may be improved. The questionnaire comprised both open and closed ended question (the latter questions used a five point Likert-type scale to determine scoring). The results, apart from compiling an overall demographic profile of the customer, showed that significant work still needs to be accomplished by the financial institutions to ensure customers understand their accounts and the various transactions and channels available to customers. AIM transaction for instance caused customers problems; to the extent that customers were willing to pay almost twice as much for branch transactions instead. The service received by customers also proved to be average, with more customer orientated demonstrations and a greater amount of time spent during the account opening procedure being seen as valuable ways to improve the overall service received. Customers valued cash withdrawal transactions the most, favouring the use of the branch channel. Customer needs were identified to be primarily credit based; with different credit facilities being required. Customer motivated improvements also extended to a greater range of free transactions on the account, improved - viii - interest rates on credit balances and some form of loyalty based discount on certain transactions. Practical ways suggested to improve access to the account included account proliferation techniques (where third parties may initiate the opening of an Mzansi account on behalf of a customer) and the use of mobile banking facilities. The product functionality was also recommended to be expanded to include limited numbers of debit and stop orders for the retail banks' offering, while a strong emphasis was placed on approaches to improving customer financial literacy by way of education programs that are community based. The later aspects were also seen as strong departure points that the supporting financial institutions could leverage to significantly differentiate their service and product offering. The objectives of the study were deemed to have been met, despite the fact that the study's geographical bias, customers possibly misrepresenting their income and possible translation bias.

Abstract:
The thesis is presented in alternative format, meaning that the results of the thesis take the form of three journal articles, each telling a distinct story within the subject matter, but collectively highlighting the sensitivity of bands to frictional and diabatic processes. Paper 1 is an idealised-modelling study with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, in which moist baroclinic waves are simulated from an initial zonally uniform mid-latitude jet on an f-plane at 20-km grid spacing, and the sensitivity of the resulting precipitation bands is explored. Paper 2 employs further WRF idealised-baroclinic-wave simulations and takes a simulation from Paper 1, after the cold front has formed, as the initial condition. A nested domain at 4-km grid spacing is inserted when this simulation is re-initialised to invesigate the sensitivity of finer-scale precipitation cores along the surface cold front. In both Papers 1 and 2, friction and latent-heat release enhance multiple banding at the two distinct horizontal scales, while surface fluxes hinder multiple banding. Paper 3 studies post-frontal snowbands over the English Channel and Irish Sea during extreme cold-air outbreaks in the winters of 2009-10 and 2010-11, via a climatology of precipitation-radar, sounding, and SST data, and real-data WRF sensitivity simulations of one such band over the English Channel. The observational and modelling results show that strong winds and large differential heat fluxes between land and sea were necessary to generate banded precipitation. Coastal orography and the land-sea frictional contrast aided the morphology of bands, but banded precipitation did still form in the absence of these influences in the sensitivity simulations. These three studies and the thesis as a whole highlight the role of frictional and diabatic processes in modifying various types of precipitation bands within baroclinic waves, and in generating bands that would otherwise not exist.

Full text
Abstract:
The study is a descriptive analysis using a case-study methodology that identifies the critical elements (methods, tools, processes, personnel, and practices) of adversary analysis identified as a red team and red-teaming. A red team is the adversary element of the analytic method of red-teaming. The study incorporates interview data with organization leadership, subject matter experts, and red-team developers from Department of Defense (DoD), Intelligence Community (IC), and Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDC) organizations. The study also includes red-team governance documents, red-team briefings, and discussions to first identify the concepts, analyze the critical design elements of the concept(s), and develop a fundamental taxonomy or classification of red-team approaches based on these artifacts. The study compares and contrasts four red teams that utilize groups of adversary subject-matter experts for common themes, differences, and best practices. The data collection builds on grounded theory—i.e., identification of the methods, tools, processes, and personnel as the organizations understand and develop their red teams as part of their red-teaming analyses to address gaps in understanding possible adversaries. The four organizations studied are the U.S. Army, Training and Doctrine Command, University of Foreign Military and Cultural Studies; a Department of Defense unified combatant command; the U.S. Naval War College (NWC) and its red-team detachment; and a Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) Homeland Security and Defense, National Infrastructure Simulation and Analysis Center (NISAC). Two basic types of red teams are identified from the data with a hybrid between the two among the variations of the red-teaming concept. Some of the other findings from the four red teams include a need to develop common terms and standards; a need to explain the benefits of alternative analysis to decisionmakers; a need to develop trend analyses on types of red teams requested by sponsors; a need to design methods to capture non-state actors; a need to include more coalition and foreign partners; and a need to immerse red teams more fully into the culture to be understood.

Abstract:

This paper uses 3 - month and 12 - month market Negotiable Certificates of ( I . Deposit (NCO) rates to test whether greater transparency by the South African Reserve Bank has reduced expectational errors in the money markets. It does so by comparing the relative differences (between the implied forward rates-as indicators of expected future spot rates-and the actual 'future'spot rates) between the period before greater transparency and the period after greater transparency. Empirical evidence for the sample period indicates that greater ransparency by the South African Reserve Bank co-incided with reduced expectational errors in the money markets. Thus, the implied forward rates after greater transparency may well have been better predictors of future spot rates than before greater transparency, although causality has not been proved.

Moore, III William. "Sharing All the Way to the Bank: A Neuroimaging Investigation of Disclosure, Reward, and Self." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/19656.

Abstract:
No neuroimaging investigation to date has considered the effects of social context on self-referential processing, despite the fact that the hypothesis that people engage different selves in different contexts has been with psychology for more than a century. To address this gap in the empirical record, a suite of three functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments was conducted in order to assess patterns of neural activity associated with self-referential (compared to non-self-referential) processes (Experiment 1), computational models of reinforcement-learning processes (Experiment 2), and social context modulation of personally relevant cognition (Experiment 3). I demonstrate that distinct patterns of neural activity in cortical midline structures and the mesial ventral striatum are associated with thinking about the self privately, sharing information about the self with a parent, and sharing with a friend. These differentiated disclosure responses (Experiment 3) are evident at the whole brain level and in regions of interest defined by functional activity in independent tasks of self (Experiment 1) and reward (Experiment 2). In addition to providing empirical evidence for contextually differentiated self-representations in the brain, this dissertation validates the use of fMRI paradigms designed to functionally localize self-referential and reward-related activity either independently or in conjunction, as well as distinguish components of ventral striatal activity unique to each task. Finally, I consider strategies for approaching future investigations of self and social cognition in terms of reinforcement learning.

Abstract:
The purpose of this interdisciplinary study was to explore whether it is possible to conduct a data-driven study using pattern recognition in order to gain an understanding of user behavior within a mobile bank application. This knowledge was in turn used to propose ways of tailoring the application to better suit the actual needs of the users. In this thesis, unsupervised learning in the form of clustering was applied to a data set containing information about user interactions with a mobile bank application. By pre-processing the data, finding the best value for the number of clusters to use and applying these results to the K-means algorithm, clustering into distinct subgroups was possible. Visualization of the clusters was possible due to combining K-means with a Principal Component Analysis. Through clustering, patterns regarding how the different functionalities are used in the application were revealed. Thereafter, using relevant concepts within the field of human-computer interaction, a proposal was made of how the application could be altered to better suit the discovered needs of the users. The results show that most sessions are passive, that the device model is of high importance in the clusters, that some features are seldom used and that hidden functionalities are not used in full measure. This is either due to the user not wanting to use some functionalities or because there is a lack of discoverability or understanding among the users, causing them to refrain from using these functionalities. However, determining the actual cause requires further qualitative studies. Removing features which are seldom used, adding signifiers, active discovery as well as conducting user-tests are identified as possible actions in order to minimize issues with discoverability and understanding. Finally, future work and possible improvements to the research methods used in this study were proposed.

Matly, Michel. "Bande dessinée et guerre civile espagnole : représentations et clés d'analyse." Thesis, Clermont-Ferrand 2, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016CLF20009.

Full text
Abstract:
This doctoral thesis analyzes the representation of the Spanish civil war in comics published in Spain and over the world between 1976 and 2015, i.e. about 350 comics and more than 7000 pages dedicated to the conflict. The specificity of the media as well as the size of the sample require investigating some theoretical issues such as the way comics communicate, transmit meaning and confront author's and reader's representations. This leads to propose a standardized method of statistical analysis build on the creation of topic-related lexicon and grammar for comic images, comparable to text data-mining. Results structure the corpus according to three main stable and independent dimensions: the degree of provocation of the reader (between only recording events and sparking thought, emotion or commitment), the legitimacy of the conflict (between a just fight and a mad war that no reason can justify) and polemics (two still opposed Spains). These results also point out significant differences and evolutions of the representation of the Spanish war, compatible with the conclusions of other works about the memory of the conflict based on different historical and cultural sources. Studied period can be divided into times of construction, crystallization and abandonment of a first representation between the 70s and the mid-90s, then of construction and crystallization of a second more polemical representation from the second half of the 90s to nowadays. Comics also show that some aspects of the war, such as violence towards civilians, the role of Catholic church, prison and exile, the place of the Republic during the conflict, are still inconclusive. Being both historical records and historic objects, comics inform us not only on the Spanish civil war, but also on the societies and times that remember it

We analyze the lending behavior of the commercial banks in the credit market at the local level by localities in Brazil for the period from 2005 to 2013. We use a high-frequency database from Brazil Central Bank of the main items of balance sheets of commercial banks and multiple banks with commercial portfolio. We used fixed-effects panel and non-additive fixed-effect quantile panel for a universe of 2,601 localities. We find evidence of poor credit allocation by state-owned banks after the 2008-2009 financial crisis for the non-earmarked credit market segment. The larger credit expansion, the deteriorating loan quality and the political targeted bank lending seem to be main determinants of such poor allocation.

Abstract:

Africa is a poor continent with many of the worlds least developed countries. The latest years the Swedish export to Africa has diminished, at the same time Sweden continues to be a big contributor of aid funds to the continent. However, trade in all its form contribute to prosperity in the trading countries which indicates that the trade with Sweden could help Africa to develop into a bigger and more important economy. Also, since trade increases a country’s welfare, both the Swedish and African societies could benefit from an increased trade between the countries.

By getting involved in public procurements in Africa the Swedish companies would get an economic security in the otherwise quite risky market. The public procurements could also mean a way to enter the market or to increase the market shares in Africa. This Thesis is focused on public procurements from the African Development Bank, mostly since Sweden is a big contributor in the bank but only a few Swedish companies has won contracts from the bank and also because many studies has not been made regarding their procurement process.

By using theories mainly from project marketing and networking, the market of public procurements in the African Development Bank, the process and the ways to succeed on this market has been studied.

It has been showed that the competition for the procurements from the bank is hard, and that the Swedish companies have not been successful. There are many underlying reasons for this, one of the most important being the fact that the Swedish companies have not even been interested in participating in the procurements since they find the market, the process and the bank to complicated. New possibilities are emerging on the market with the African Development Bank improving the efficiency of the procurement process, more lobbying being performed from the Swedish Foreign Ministry and also the growing African market, which makes this market more interesting and could mean new opportunities for the Swedish companies.

To improve the Swedish statistics in winning contracts from the bank the Swedish companies need to improve their networking to a great extent. Personal contacts and relationships are extremely important in making business in Africa and also when making bids on procurements from the bank. From the relationships in Africa, the Swedish companies can receive early information about upcoming projects in order to prepare the bid and market the company early. The Swedish companies must be more proactive in their marketing and visit Africa more often, as well as matching the needs with their offer to a better extent than today. It is important for the companies to have a long-term strategy when entering the African procurement market and not to resist too easily. Hard work and many resources will be spent before being awarded with the first contract and thereafter one success will lead to others.

Full text
Abstract:
Since their inception in African countries, structural adjustment has tended to cause more harm than help. This thesis aims to answer the question, in what ways have structural adjustment policies impacted Africa in general and Sierra Leone in particular? This question is highly relevant when it is considered that Africa is one of the poorest regions in the world and has experiences much conflict and suffering. In addition, much is known about the impact of structural adjustment in many African countries. However, little has been written on the impact of structural adjustment in Sierra Leone, especially in terms of the impact of structural adjustment on conflict. The hypothesis of this thesis is that the impact of structural adjustment policies has tended to increase poverty. Poverty has led to frustration and conflict in Africa in general and Sierra Leone in particular. In order to substantiate this hypothesis I have elected to focus on the years between 1960 and the late 1980s. The finding contained within this thesis show that structural adjustment policies may have led to a reduction of social services that include health, education and unemployment.

Johnson, Rebecca. "The 1996 Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty : a study in post Cold War multilateral arms control negotiations." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2004. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/663/.

Full text
Abstract:
A Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) had been on the arms control agenda since 1954, the subject of intermittent bilateral or trilateral talks that achieved only partial measures. The end of the Cold War provided renewed public pressure and political impetus for banning nuclear explosions. This thesis analyses the context and processes of the multilateral test ban negotiations that opened in the Conference on Disarmament in 1994. Combining participant-observation and contemporaneous notes with extensive use of documentary sources, unpublished materials and interviews, the study explores the dynamics of the CTBT negotiations in light both of regime theory and post cold war concepts of multilateralism, highlighting the role of civil society actors as well as states. Providing historical background and rich detail on the negotiating process from 1994-1996, the thesis examines the causal factors, strengths and weaknesses of the outcomes in four key areas: prenegotiations, scope, verification and entry into force. Focusing on the strategies and mechanisms by which actors with competing expectations and interests reached agreement, two types of convergence are explored: distributive, encompassing both imposed and managed divisions of gains and losses; and integrative, in which expectations of what would constitute an acceptable agreement are expanded or changed through cognitive strategies and the shaping of norms and interests. The thesis shows that whilst sharing a general objective of a CTBT, governments had significantly different views on what a test ban should encompass and accomplish, particularly with respect to broader concepts of nonproliferation and disarmament. While nuclear interests played a major role in determining a state's expectations and negotiating posture, other factors were important in reaching convergence. These included: knowledge and ideas; civil society engagement; norms and regime values; partnerships and alliances; internal policy cohesion or division; and the level of domestic and international political attention and support. By choosing to incorporate transnational civil society as a principal unit of analysis, along with states, the thesis contributes to a fuller understanding of how governments' calculations of what constitutes self-interest and security can be influenced and shaped, opening up alternative solutions for agreement than might have been initially envisaged.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the bands of the armies of the Confederate States of America. This study features appendices of libraries and archives collections visited in ten states and Washington D.C., and covers all known Confederate bands. Some scholars have erroneously concluded that this indicated a lack of available primary source materials that few Confederate bands served the duration of the war. The study features appendices of libraries and archives collections visited in ten states and Washington, D.C., and covers all known Confederate bands. There were approximately 155 bands and 2,400 bandsmen in the service of the Confederate armies. Forty bands surrendered at Appomattox and many others not listed on final muster rolls were found to have served through the war. While most Confederate musicians and bandsmen were white, many black musicians were regularly enlisted soldiers who provided the same services. A chapter is devoted to the contributions of black Confederate musicians.

Gillespie, Janet Patricia. "Was King John of England bipolar? : a medical history using mathematical modelling." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/12195.

Full text
Abstract:
BACKGROUND - Bipolar disorder has been postulated as an explanation for King John's inconsistencies of leadership and vagaries of character. Changes in activity, matching those in mood, are core features of the condition. METHOD - A measure of King John's activity was derived from his travelling itinerary. Change Point Analysis (CPA) was used to detect significant changes in that travelling activity and from them, to identify clinically compliant, high and low, activity time periods. The results were tested against an alternative mathematical model (Bollinger Bands™), three alternative parameters and two comparator itineraries (familial & non-familial). Using primary historical sources and published analyses, bipolar symptoms were identified and their temporal relationship to the ICD-10 compliant CPA periods evaluated. The influence of circumstances was also evaluated using primary sources and a representative sequential sample (1200-1204). RESULTS - CPA identified 83 periods of changed travelling activity. These changes were mathematically independent of the availability of the historical sources that underpin the itinerary. From these, 37 high and 22 low periods complied with current diagnostic guidelines and demonstrated descriptive and statistical similarities to those found in the bipolar literature. Analyses using alternative mathematical modelling and different parameters showed similar changes; analyses of comparator itineraries showed a possible familial trait. Of the 17 bipolar symptoms identified, all were found in CPA periods of appropriate polarity. Of the 23 sequential periods, 10 showed evidence of behaviour that was difficult to attribute to circumstances. CONCLUSIONS & OUTCOMES - The pattern of changes in King John's activity are highly suggestive of bipolar disorder with primary historical sources describing synchronous bipolar behaviour. This may alter our understanding both of King John and of Magna Carta. Change Point Analysis merits greater consideration when analysing time based data, as does the use of activity as an objective marker of human behaviour.

Abstract:
Restorative justice is a term used to describe an array of practices growing in popularity as alternatives to the formal criminal justice system. Although restorative justice theory and process outcomes have been studied extensively, there has been minimal qualitative analysis in this field towards understanding how and why these practices work. This gap in knowledge led Choi (2008) to describe restorative justice as a “black box”. This research seeks to illuminate the ‘black box’ through a qualitative study of experiences of some of the practitioners who guide restorative justice with ‘serious’ cases. These participants described a great passion for restorative justice and a commitment to reflexive practice. They were willing to critically explore their own experiences, the processes they work within, and the theories and ethics of this evolving field. Emergent themes included: The importance of the impact of crime, experiences illuminating the ‘black box’, the role of mentorship in restorative justice, experiences of witnessing stories, the importance of relationships and communities, questions of standards and standardization, and the misuse of power in restorative justice. A dominant over-arching theme expressed by all participants was a caution that as restorative justice moves towards legitimization it should do so ‘in a good way’ by honouring the values and ethics it was founded upon.

Institutions are crucial in reflecting the economic and political conditions of their time. This thesis analyses the features of establishment process of the Industrial Development Bank of Turkey (TSKB) in close relation with the World Bank and the activities of the TSKB in its first four years between 1950 and 1953. The arguments of Development economics and the dependency theory are utilized in the discussion. The main objective of the study is to bring out the link between the establishment of a privately owned development bank in Turkey, aiming to promote private industry, and the economic environment at the time, including the Cold War atmosphere affecting internal and external politics of Turkey. Moreover, it is put forward that the sectors chosen for credit allocation are compatible with the international division of labor of the time. That is, the TSKB has channeled international funds in a way aiming at Turkey&rsquo

This research examines the social relationships on the family´s context available in Rio Grande do Sul, a Captainship, after named the province of Rio Grande de São Pedro, in the locality of Rio Pardo, with a focus on women's situation during the military campaigns in the Banda Oriental (1811-1828). The border wars, typical in our space of study, and contributed to the formation / consolidation of South Rio Grande area, had influence in family formations due to the strategies and alliances established and constant military mobilizations of male troops, putting women in some positions that usually would be earmarked to male households components. By consulting bibliographies, funding requirements and Military Authorities of the Historical Archive of Rio Grande do Sul (AHRS), correspondences, petitions, letters, receipts of the Municipality of Rio Pardo (AHMRP), Varella´s Collection of documents and reports of travelers, We observed, in a qualitative manner, as the context of frontier and war have affected families in the region. We infer that the war situation did not allow the accommodation of family members into traditional social roles, since the absence of men because of the conflicts, has forced women to perform their duties. This research was conducted with funding Reuni/Capes and it is a part of the Integration, Policy and Frontier line research.
Abstract:
A metalsmiths ability to turn stone into metal and mould metal into useable objects, is one of the most valuable production industries of any society. The conception of this metallurgical knowledge has been the major catalyst in the development of increasing socio-political complexity since the beginning of the Bronze Age (Childe, 1930). However, when considering the prehistory of Southeast Asia, especially Thailand, it is noted that the introduction of metallurgical activity, namely copper and bronze technology, did not engender the increase in social complexity witnessed in other regions. It is suggested that the region is anomalous in that terms and concepts developed to describe and define Bronze Ages by scholars working in other regions, lack strict analogues within Southeast Asia. Muhly (1988) has famously noted the non-compliance of Southeast Asia to previous models, "In all other corners of the Bronze Age world-China, Mesopotamia, Anatolia, the Aegean and central Europe-we find the introduction of bronze technology associated with a complex of social, political and economic developments that mark the rise of the state. Only in Southeast Asia, especially in Thailand and Vietnam, do these developments seem to be missing" (Muhly, 1988:16). This "rise of the state" is associated with the development of hierarchy, inequality, and status differentiation, evidence for which, it is argued, is most explicitly articulated in mortuary contexts (Bacus, 2006). Evidence would include an intra-site restriction in access to resources, including prestige goods, and ranking, a vertical differentiation, often related to interment wealth. Thus the introduction of metallurgical technology saw copper and other prestige goods, used to entrench authority and advertise status (Coles and Harding; 1979). Such evidence has so far been absent in Bronze Age, Southeast Asian contexts. Accordingly, the usefulness of the term "Bronze Age" for describing and defining Southeast Asian assemblages has been questioned (White, 2002). However, the Ban Non Wat discovery of wealthy Bronze Age interments, with bronze grave goods restricted to the wealthiest, has furrowed the brow of many working in the region, providing evidence to at least reconsider this stance. Despite its obvious importance in shaping Bronze Age societies around the globe, and now, significance in Northeast Thailand, very little is known of the acceptance, development, and spread of tin-bronze metallurgical techniques during the prehistory of Southeast Asia. Only a handful of investigations of archaeological sites in the region have investigated the use of metals beyond macroscopic cataloguing. Utilising an agential framework, the Ban Non Wat bronze metallurgical evidence has been investigated as an entire assemblage, from the perspective of the individual metalsmith, in order to greater understand the industry and its impact upon the society incorporating the new technology. Furthermore, mortuary data is investigated by means of wealth assessment, as an insight into social form throughout the corresponding period of adoption, development and spread of metallurgy. The bivalent study of society and technology has shed light on the development of socio-political, and economic complexity during Bronze Age Southeast Asia, and in doing so, outlined the direct impact the metalsmiths themselves had on the supply, spread and functioning of their important industry. Variabilities in grave wealth, have been identified at Ban Non Wat. A further situation not previously encountered in Bronze Age Southeast Asia, is the restriction of bronze goods, in death, to differentiated, wealthy individuals. The existence of such individuals suggests that society during this period was rather more complex than regional precedents would suggest. I contend that it is the introduction of metallurgy, and in particular, the nature in which it was conducted that engendered these developments. Therefore, when considering the traditional course of developing social-political complexity during the Bronze Age, it now seems that Thailand at least, is potentially, not that anomalous.
