Full textThis thesis concerns the religious profile of the epic poem about Saviour’s Passion by Wacław Potocki ‘Nowy zaciąg pod chorągiew starą tryumfującego Jezusa Syna Bożego nad światem, czartem, śmiercią i piekłem’. The analisys leads to the verification of reliability of the thesis repeated in the subject literature about introducing crypto-Arian content to Potocki’s works after his conversion to Catholicism, especially to ‘Nowy zaciąg’. The fact that issue was usually connected with the question about the truthfulness of his conversion from Arianism to Catholicism did not foster the progress of previous academic discussions. The discussions concerned mainly the issue of the true identity of the narrator in Potocki’s religious texts written after the conversion: Catholic, Arian, crypto-Arian or maybe a person dęclaring his faith in God, however avoiding expressing affiliation with any religious community. In my research I did not introduce the question about Potocki’s faith as it is an unsolvable matter. His messiad was the subject of my interest not as a document determining his belonginess to any religious community but as an integral artistic work including certain ideological message. My research concerning the influence of Catholicism and Arianism on the poem required the closer look on the reflection of widely understood religious traditions in the text. I was especially interested in the references to their doctrines. To a lesser extent did I take into consideration the references to Catholic and Arian ethics, mentality, religious practices and advocated attitude of human and religious community towards God. The fragments of the messiad were compared with other texts bearing theological, antropological and custom ideas appropiate for those religious denominations: catechismus, postillographic works, polemic treaties, exegetic writings, works that represent modern pious considerations, miscitism and apocrypha. Identification above mentioned elements was supported by determination of their meaning in the analysed work. The dissertation consists of five chapters. The first one includes the short summary of information about Potocki’s conversion. Then it concerns the outline of his religious works, including especially the elements of Catholicism and Arianism in selected ones. These observations provide the background for the analysed messiad. Moreover, in the same chapter the scope of research on religious character of Potocki’s poetry was pointed out. Next chapters include the analisys of the way the issues (especially theological) were presented in ‘Nowy zaciąg’, which were the subject of discussion between Catholic Church memebers and Polish Bretehern. The second chapter is devoted to the image of Christ in the poem (I especially examined the question of His divinity, preexistence and incarnation) and to the image of the Holy Spirit that can be found therein. In the third chapter the issues of the Divine Economy occuring in the messiad were mentioned. Firstly, the thoughts on the original sin, connected with the Economy of Salvation but not strictly beeing in the scope of interest of soteriology, were followed trough. Then the chapter concerns the issues of compensation, redemption, exemplaric expression of Passion, human contribution in the work of redemption and the relations between God’s anger, justice and mercy. The fourth chapter deals with the references to the Eucharist introduced by Potocki in ‘Nowy zaciąg’. The last chapter concerns other issues mentioned by scholars as one of the criteria the messiad’s confessional character: the attitude towards the cult of Virgin Mary and saints, Potocki’s approach to introducing apocryphical motifs, statements about the relations between the faith, senses and mind, criticism of the chosen elements of the Catholic devotion and the clergy and also the opinion concerning the Church’s absolute truth. The conclusions includes the summary of detailed analysis, findings and postulates which can be researched further. The analisys of ‘Nowy zaciąg’ enabled to negate the thesis about the crypto-Arian character of Potocki’s messiad. It transpired that the way of presenting theological issues (including not only the creation of the represented world but also discursive parts mentioning certain theological problems) is deeply coherent and is concordant with the Catholic dogmas.

Full textThe subject of this dissertation is the analysis of a part of Wacław Potocki's poetry vocabulary. For the purposes of the study, a text sample of 3000 verses from three representative works of the 17th-century poet (Transakcja wojny chocimskiej, Ogród nie plewiony, Moralia) was excerpted. The three-volume edition of Wacław Potocki's Dzieła edited by Leszek Kukulski (1987) was adopted as the source for the study. A dictionary of the author's language is an integral part of the dissertation, bringing together all the collected lexis: Słownik języka Wacława Potockiego (SJWPot), Słownik frazeologizmów Wacława Potockiego (SFWPot) and Słownik kolokacji Wacława Potockiego (SKWPot). On the basis of the SJWPot entries a linguistic analysis was conducted at several levels: etymological, word-formation, semantic and lexicographical. The collected lexica was auxiliary subjected to register-descriptive, statistical, onomastic and comparative analysis. The adoption of a synchronic-diachronic research perspective has made it possible to point to certain preferences of Wacław Potocki in the creation of lexical units, as well as to draw certain conclusions concerning the entire medieval Polish vocabulary subsystem. The thematic structure of the collected material was examined using the method of lexical-semantic fields. The next stage of the research was a lexicographic analysis of the material, aimed at documenting several hundred SJWPot entries in representative dictionary studies. The search covered five dictionaries collecting Polish word resources from the Old Polish period to the beginning of the 19th century. The dissertation consists of five chapters, including two theoretical and three analytical ones. After a short introduction informing about the aims, assumptions and structure of the work in the first chapter, the author justifies the choice of the research topic, explains the criteria for the selection of the material sample and gives its scope, as well as presents the state of research into the works of Wacław Potocki. The next part of chapter one contains the characteristics of the epoch, in which the author of Moralia lived and worked, and a discussion of the most important concepts and terms associated with the Baroque. In this part of the work there is also a calendar of life and work of the seventeenth-century poet. The second chapter is entirely devoted to the description of methodology, directions and research tools used in the analysis of a selected fragment of the writer's language. The theoretical part of the work ends with a subsection entitled: Słownik języka Wacława Potockiego. Idea, struktura, zasady opracowania. The third chapter begins the analytical part of the dissertation and constitutes its most extensive fragment. It consists of two smaller subsections, distinguished on the basis of the results of the genetic analysis of the material sample. In the first part of the chapter a set of native vocabulary is presented, within which basic (non-derivative) words and words derived from it are distinguished. The first stage of the research was a structural analysis of the latter, consisting in grouping the vocabulary-motivated units according to types, categories and derivational techniques. In the second part of the third chapter, which was devoted to the characteristics of borrowings, the qualitative-quantitative data were placed showing the division of foreign lexemes according to the source of origin, the object of borrowing and the degree of their assimilation into the Polish language system. The fourth chapter presents the results of lexical-semantic analysis of the material, conducted with the use of the word field method. The fifth chapter deals mainly with the results of statistical research. In addition, the chapter discusses the results of lexicographic research, covering a specific section of vocabulary of Wacław Potocki's works. Conclusions from the conducted analysis are included in the conclusion. The dissertation ends with a list of abbreviations and designations used, an index of tables included in the main text of the dissertation, a bibliography including dictionaries and other sources and a two-part appendix in traditional and multimedia versions. The first part of the appendix consists of tables attached to the dissertation together with an index to them. The second part of the appendix, placed on an electronic carrier, contains three dictionaries collecting the lexicon of works of a selected author – SJWPot, SFWPot and SKWPot. As the analysis has shown, Wacław Potocki most frequently used words inherited by the Polish language from previous centuries, including a large number of units with indivisible vocabulary and the oldest origins in our language. Contrary to the assumptions put forward by scholars of the Polish language of the Middle Polish period, the author of Moralia did not overuse borrowings from foreign languages. Wacław Potocki turned out to be a traditionalist not only in his choice of native vocabulary, but also of foreign languages, and more often than Middle Polish latinisms, he used German loans in his poems, which were brought into Polish mostly as early as the Middle Ages. Like the vocabulary borrowed from other languages, these were mostly formal- -semantic loans acquired by ear and fulfilling a utilitarian function in the text. In contrast to the prose of Pamiętniki of Jan Chryzostom Pasek, Wacław Potocki's poetry turned out to be free of macaronisms, which, however, should be considered typical of poems written at that time.

Full textW rozprawie została omówiona estetyka i ideologia poematu "Wacław" autorstwa jednego z największych polskich poetów, Juliusza Słowackiego.
In present doctoral dissertation, esthetics and ideology of the poem Waclaw by one of the greatest Polish poets Juliusz Slowacki have been discussed. The poem was discredited by first reviewers, considered as a crisis in poet’s creativity which explains discontinuation of research on the poem. Author of the thesis decided to reopen the study on Waclaw, investigate the reasons of its creation and causes of negative reviews as well as analyze and interpret the poem. The main assumption of the thesis is that Waclaw is the evidence of significant transformation in Juliusz Slowacki, both, as a poet and as a man; that it is a manifestation of new quality of esthetics and view which transgress the frames of the era.
Takasaeva, Kyunney. "Jakuckie prace Wacława Sieroszewskiego w kontekście przemian świadomości narodowej Sacha (Jakutów)." Doctoral thesis, 2017. https://depotuw.ceon.pl/handle/item/2296.
Full textPrzedstawiona praca w zakresie ku lturoznawstwa pt.

Full textSo far, cabinets of curiosities have been studied mainly by researchers of Renaissance culture and literature, especially art historians dealing with the history of European collecting. This is understandable, because the age of curiosity was the time when the first erudite wunderkammers were created. In my dissertation, I assume that in the nineteenth century, and especially in its second half, the conditions arose for the re-development of this exhibition form, which in turn entailed its transference from an organising principle of aristocratic collections to the contexts of popular culture and literature. The aim of my dissertation is to describe and interpret the various manifestations of cabinets of curiosities in the literature and cultural context of the second half of the 19th century. I understand cabinets of curiosities as collections presenting a microcosm, the design of which is based on the belief that the universe is best represented by those things that are unique, rare, and peculiar. I argue that the interest in curiosities was a consequence of the values which permeated the cultural formations of the nineteenth-century and functioned so as to enable exploration and description of issues which seemingly neither positivism, naturalism nor scientism were capable of reflecting. I assume that "curiosities" is a functional concept, in the sense that it describes the viewer rather than the object. From this point of view I study both how nineteenth-century authors portrayed their epoch using this figure, and the kinds of stories we can reconstruct from examining curiosities. This work is part of the cultural history of literature both in the sense of its thematic scope and the diverse research instruments it deploys. Among the latter are tools used by literary studies, cultural studies, and the history of art. Works that inform the analysis include novels as well as short stories, travel descriptions, philosophical treatises, scientific and popular science texts, tourist guides and newspaper articles. Foreign literature provides the context for the Polish texts studied. 1 The structure of the work reflects various aspects of the circulation of curiosities in culture and literature. In the first chapter, I interpret travel texts related to real-life collections of curiosities. Their authors included writers (Józef Ignacy Kraszewski, Sygurd Wiśniowski), explorers (Karol Darwin, Konstanty Jelski, Benedykt Dybowski), and collectors (Michał Tyszkiewicz). I inquire into how they researched and described the curiosities they encountered, and how the exhibits they collected were related to tourist attractions (Dean MacCannell) and souvenirs (Anna Wieczorkiewicz). In the second and third chapters, I focus on the places presented in the literature (Elżbieta Rybicka) in which the curiosities were studied, exhibited and sold: scientific cabinets (including Sartor Resartus, Niewidzialny, Mistrz Twardowski, and Xiądz Faust, but also real Tesla, Szczepanik and Ochorowicz laboratories), private collections (including Cousin Pons, Pan Major, and The Spoils of Poynton) and magazines of curiosities (including The Old Curiosity Shop, Lalka, The Skin of Sorrow, and The Golden Bowl). I examine the texts from three basic perspectives: the practice, poetics and politics (Susan Pearce) of collecting, and the showing and watching of curiosities. In common with the collectors, I read the exhibits presented in the texts metonymically (Elaine Freedgood). While in the first three chapters I focus primarily on things, the last chapter is about human curiosities, exhibited in the cabinets that belonged to the metropolitan culture of attractions (from the panopticus to the spiritualistic séances). I examine the significances that have been attributed to human bodies in the various discourses in which curiosities were embedded (Anna Wieczorkiewicz). The interpreted texts confirm the widespread presence of curiosity cabinets in 19thcentury literature and culture, and a vivid interest in what is unusual, unknown, or invisible. The curiosities examined enabled and facilitated the introduction of that "uniqueness", characteristic of speculative fiction, to the realm of realism, thereby abolishing the sharp boundary between idealism and materialism, religion and science, fact and miracle; they became a catalyst for modernity. The presented collections tell their own stories about the nineteenth century, using the poetics of curiosities, which operates with specific means of expression, narrative construction, and textual forms. Among the stories from the literary cabinets of curiosities, there are those inspiring universal affinity, evoking melancholy and utopia, and embodying modern norms. At the same time, these stories are enmeshed in class, national and consumer discourses. Although by displaying curiosities, that which is to be considered normal is strongly signalled, normality nevertheless does not here assume an attractive guise. Contact with curiosities allows 2 emancipation from the rigid framework of bourgeois society and participation in culture created by geniuses and eccentrics: travellers, artists, explorers and collectors. In my dissertation, I show that the turn to curiosities takes place in a time marked by the rapid development of science and technology, and new discoveries that shake the existing paradigms and denature the current image of the world. Curiosities help this image to be sewn back together, creating a bridge between the past, modernity and the future.
