Abstract:
Abstract In Part I of this study, the Ural blocking (UB)-induced amplification role of winter warm Arctic–cold Eurasian (WACE) anomalies has been examined. It was found that the long-lived UB together with the positive North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO+) significantly contributes to the amplification of the WACE pattern. The present study examines how the UB variability affects quasi-biweekly WACE (QB-WACE) anomalies and depends on the NAO+ and North Atlantic conditions by classifying the UB based on a case study of a cold event that occurred over southern China in January 2008. A composite analysis during 1979–2013 shows that the QB-WACE anomalies associated with the UB that often occur with the NAO+ are strong and influenced by the North Atlantic jet (NAJ) and zonal wind strengths over Eurasia. For NAO+-related UB, the QB-WACE anomaly depends strongly on the location of UB, and the UB anomalies lag the NAO+ by approximately 4–7 days. The strength of the NAJ determines whether the combined NAO+ and UB anomalies exhibit a negative East Atlantic/West Russia (EA/WR−) pattern, while the region of weak zonal winds over Eurasia and the zonal extent of the NAJ dominate the location of UB. For southward-, eastward-, and westward-displaced UBs associated with a strong NAJ, the NAO+ favors the UB with a southward-displaced QB-WACE anomaly through wave train propagation like an EA/WR− pattern. Eastward- and southward-displaced UB anomalies induce similarly displaced cold anomalies with intrusion into southern China. However, for a northward-displaced UB, this happens without pronounced EA/WR− patterns because of a weak NAJ and is accompanied by a northward-displaced QB-WACE anomaly.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The Global Initiative for West, Central and Southern Africa (GI WACAF Project) is a partnership between the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and IPIECA - the global oil and gas industry association for environmental and social issues, to enhance the capacity of countries to prepare for and respond to marine oil spills. The GI WACAF Project was launched in 2006 and is jointly funded by IMO and eight oil company members in order to strengthen national oil spill response capability in 22 countries of West, Central and Southern Africa through the establishment of local partnerships between the oil industries and the national authorities in charge of oil spill preparedness and response at the national level. This paper will describe how the GI WACAF Project cooperates with local stakeholders in order to develop a structure for preparedness and response in the region, and to detail what are the challenges lying ahead in order to make this structure fully operational taking into account the changes in the region in terms of risk profiles, industry representation and national and regional governance. The analysis of the exercises organised under the umbrella of the GI WACAF Project in Congo, Nigeria (2011), Gabon (2012), Cameroon, and Mauritania (2012) emphasises the needs in terms of international cooperation, integration of response capabilities at the national and regional levels and the development of effective incident management structures. In conclusion, we will present how the GI WACAF Project has evolved in order to maintain its momentum for the continuous development of preparedness and response capabilities in the region.

Abstract:
The effect of density and time of emergence of the weed tropical spiderwort (Commelinabenghalensis) (TS) on cilantro (Coriandrumsativum) yield were determined in a field experiment in Citra, Fla. TS (0, 1, 2, and 4 plants per m2) emerged at 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 weeks after cilantro emergence (WACE) and allowed to grow with the crop for the remainder of the season. No significant yield loss was detected when TS emerged 4 WACE. Season-long competition with 1, 2, and 4 TS plants per m2 resulted in yield loss of 27%, 44%, and 65%, respectively. Cilantro yield was reduced by <10% when TS emerged 3 WACE or later, regardless of TS density.

Abstract:
Commemorating National Socialism and Communism from the perspectiveof 1989 often results in an uneasy conflation of Germanguilt and victimhood. When the events of 1933-1989 are presentedas one long authoritarian period, war and tyranny can easily be construedas external forces that simply befell the German nation. While memories of national guilt are divisive, memories of victimhoodunify and simplify an otherwise ambiguous past. The 1995restoration of Berlin’s Neue Wache is emblematic of this conflationof guilt and victimhood. As the central German memorial to all victimsof war and tyranny, the Neue Wache neither distinguishesbetween dictatorships, nor between perpetrator and victim.

Abstract:
An overview of Aboriginal education in the last two hundred years reveals that Aborigines have had a depressingly inadequate education, also marked by inequity of opportunity and participation. The developmental pattern of Aboriginal education has been characterised by four broad periods or eras related to specific government policies. These periods are identified successively as The Protection Era, the Segregation Era, The Assimilation Era and The Integration Era. The Protection Era began with the early frontier settlement of Europeans in Australia and extended until the 1860's. The Segregation Era marked the full development of Aboriginal reserves from 1860 to 1940. The Assimilation Era extended from the 1940s to the mid 1960s. Finally the period of Integration began in the late 1960s and gathered momentum in the 1970s. Throughout the periods of protection, segregation and assimilation very little effort was expended in the provision of adequate education for Aborigines. It was not until the late 1960s that concerted attempts were made to redress the many decades of neglect and apathy. Researchers uncovered glaring problems needing urgent redress. Aboriginal pupils persistently achieved very poorly in comparison with others and left school at an earlier age. As a consequence Aborigines left school lacking the knowledge and skills to compete with other Australians and had much poorer prospects of employment. In the early 1970s the National Aboriginal Education Committee and the state Aboriginal Education Consultative Groups, combined with support and funding from DAA, Commonwealth Education and The Schools Commission, were very influential in establishing programmes. In response to the growing numbers of Aborigines who were denied adequate schooling, three general types of adult programmes were developed: a) enclave/support systems; b) pretertiary/bridging courses and c) off campus centres. It was these programmes operating at WACAE that DEET commissioned me to evaluate. The existence of these programmes is the result of WACAE's prompt response to the need for redressing Aboriginal educational imbalance. The programmes developed following the commencement of the Aboriginal Teacher Education Programme at Mt Lawley College in 1973. The first enclave was established in 1976, external AEEC commenced in 1978 and G.E.C. in 1980, the first off campus centre was set up in 1983, and the Tertiary Preparation Course (internal AEEC) began operation in 1985. Commonwealth money has provided the financial basis for the programmes, but WACAE was the first institution in Australia to implement programmes and its achievement is significant. The terms of reference for this project required that the method of research should be through data gathering by means of interviews and examination of documentary evidence during a three week period in Perth. The evaluator consulted DAIS staff, students and, as particularly requested in the brief, Aboriginal community members. Findings revealed that WACAE's enclaves, on campus and off campus, have made progress towards educational equity for Aborigines, provide good support and are valued by students and Aboriginal community members. Aboriginalisation was found to be essential to maximum enclave effectiveness. Staff, students and Aboriginal community members would like to see increased Aboriginal representation, contract hiring of staff not being conducive to employment security or staff continuity. It is recommended that rationalisation of enclaves would achieve a more efficient pooling of resources. During the last thirteen years considerable amounts of external funds have been injected and it is recommended that WACAE take greater institutional responsibility for enclaves, using funds from normal Commonwealth sources, as distinct from special course funding. The existing staffing patterns and conditions of employment should be regularised in regard to salary, tenure, study leave, superannuation, etc. Such a measure is necessary to ensure staff continuity, security and inclusion in the power structure of the institution. WACAEs external pretertiary courses (AEEC and GEC) have achieved a small measure of progress towards equity of access and participation in education for Aborigines. The wide geographical distribution is significant in providing availability of courses. The courses are valued by Aboriginal community members and there is a need for external courses of this nature to continue in the future. However, progress towards equity has been extremely slow and time taken for completion of courses is unduly long considering the basic nature of GEC, and the fact that the courses are designed for completion in one year. The courses are preceived as enhancing employment performance and prospects as well as being preparation for tertiary study. There has been a shift in opinion regarding Aboriginal education during the 1980s towards the view that education should not be seen in isolation but in combination with employment and training. It is recommended that DEET take immediate steps to implement the Aboriginal Employment Development Policy in Western Australia, considering how best the benefits of external AEEC and GEC can be maintained and expanded. On the other hand, the Tertiary Preparation Course (internal AEEC) has achieved commendable results and is assessed as being worthy of increased resources and energy. Difficulty was encountered in efforts to determine exactly how DEET funding was used. It seems that this type of enquiry would necessitate the services of a qualified accountant. Enclave/support systems and pretertiary/bridging courses will be needed for some time to come. Many Aboriginal people stated that they envisage the time when these programmes will no longer be needed, 'when inequity of education has been addressed' and 'equality' achieved. Until this goal is reached the programmes will remain necessary. The achievement of the broad objectives of the AEDP, i.e. employment and income equity with other Australians and equity of participation in all levels of education, will see Aboriginal aspirations becoming a reality.

Abstract:
As a contribution to the understanding of partial melting processes in metamorphic rocks of semipelite composition, this work presents field data and metamorphic modeling. They were used as tools for the correlation between biotite schist and metatexites, which are rich in quartz and plagioclase, with garnet, kyanite, muscovite, rutile and ilmenite, both rocks are correlated to the St. Antônio unit, in the Andrelândia Nappe System, south of Minas Gerais, Brazil. From the rocks field descriptions, it was characterized as the main mineral assemblage kyanite + garnet + biotite + plagioclase + muscovite + rutile + ilmenite + quartz + leucosome with tonalite composition, in rock types ranging from the homogeneous schist to the proto-stromatic metatexite. The compositional banding was enhanced by the generation and limited segregation of leucosome, and its proportion is higher from structural bottom to top of unit. Samples of the main rock types were collected in three quarries, from bottom to top: IC01, schist with sparse in situ melting features that are limited to the granoblastic portions and idiomorphic plagioclase crystals in quartz veins; IC03, dominated by schist, at the base, and metatexite, on top, with wide distribution of patches, pockets and veins of leucosome with tonalite composition, in situ or in source; and IC07, characterized by the compositional banding, varying from schist to metatexite, in bands with thickness ranging from 1 cm up to 1 m, and either in situ or in source leucosome veins enhance the compositional banding, although some veins, patches and pockets truncate the main foliation. With the whole rock chemistry analyses it is evident there are no significant compositional differences between schist and metatexite. The generation of small volumes of silicate Na-rich liquid is compatible with tonalite leucosome, and residue rich in Fe, Mg and K, associated with accumulations of biotite at its edges, but has not changed significantly the bulk rock compositions. The similarity of the of rare earth elements patterns for both rock types indicates anatexis did not reach a high degree and dissolution and reprecipitation of ultra-stable phases, as monazite and zircon, did not happen, which is sustained by absence of potassium feldspar in leucosome. The pseudosection modeling and isopleths calculation result in similar topology for samples of IC01 and IC03. Plagioclase crystals of the three quarries present continuous compositional change, between An 15 and An 48, with progressively more albite-rich crystals starting from the ones that are enclosed in garnet, in schist, metatexite matrix, and leucosome. This increase in the amount of albite is also observed in crystals from IC01 to IC03 and IC07, respectively, direction which, in turn, decrease the compositional differences between crystals of the same sample and different textural sites. The compositional variation of muscovite allows separation in groups with different quantities of Na, suggesting a clockwork P-T path to the rock, and optimized thermobarometry applied to IC01 and IC03 results in temperatures of 750-850 ° C for the metamorphic peak from base to top of the unit, in high pressure conditions, higher than 8 kbar. This P-T variation, from bottom to top, characterizes an inverted metamorphism in the region and demonstrates the importance of the recognition of anatexis processes for petrogenetic interpretation of semipelite rocks.

Di, Lella Francesco. "Il Roman de Brut de Inghilterra. Tradizione manoscritta e tradizioni letterarie." Thesis, Sorbonne université, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018SORUL015.

Full text
Abstract:
The Roman de Brut, transmitted by thirty-three manuscripts – seventeen of which are complete – constitutes a fundamental text in Old French literary history. Setting aside the work’s fortune in the sphere of romance, this thesis concentrates instead on Wace’s role in regard to the evolution of French insular historiography and the modes of perception of the Breton era, a subject had been introduced ex nihilo only a few years prior by Geoffrey of Monmouth in his Historia Regum Britanniae. Specifically, the thesis aims to illustrate the consequences of such a process on the text’s manuscript tradition, by analysing certain choices pertaining to the organization of the codices by their scribes, specific variants, and other global re-adaptations. However, Wace’s oeuvre should not be considered as an isolated entity, but should rather be placed in the context of the vast complex of re-adaptations of Geoffrey’s chronicle that appear during the 12th to 14th centuries, and that should be understood as the expression of the same process. Thus, the manuscript tradition of the Roman de Brut evolves together with the convoluted knot of literary traditions that develop from the Historia Regum Britanniae: these do not only influence Wace’s text in its manuscripts, but are themselves shaped by it in turn. Starting from a codicological, stylistic, and ecdotic analysis of the Brut manuscripts, along with a comprehensive reflection on the entirety of Anglo-Norman chronicles on the subject of the Breton era, this thesis illustrates the various faces that the Breton matter has assumed within this production, and its journey towards affirming itself as the origin myth of England’s history

Abstract:
This thesis investigates issues of translation from French to English in post-Conquest England by means of a comparison of two Middle English romances and their respective French sources. The first part of the thesis will examine the relationship between the Roman de Brut, written by the francophone author Wace in the 12th century, and its English translation, La3amon’s Brut. The second part is devoted to a comparative study of French and English versions of a romance about Alexander the Great, the 12th century Roman de toute chevalerie, by Thomas of Kent, and its 14th century translation, Kyng Alisaunder

Abstract:
Since the beginning of the 18th century, the instability of the PrussianIGerman state has affected the shape of Berlin. Constant shifts in the boundaries of the empire as well as in its ideology have forced countless architectural redefinitions of the center of its capital. The decisions to preserve, renovate, or replace Berlin’s monuments have thus always been caught between considerations of their ideological impact and their effect on the body of historic docurnentation. Schinkel’s Neue Wache grew out of this tension. It was originally designed and subsequently renovated at significant points of change in German history: it was designed after the defeat of Napoleon and renovated after WWI, modified during the Nazi period, and substantially changed at three points after WWII: in the early years of the German Democratic Republic, at the height of the Cold War, and after reunification in 1993. Consequently, its architecture has always borne traces of history consciously transformed by the ideologies of the present.

Andika, B. "Characteristics of Facies Associations, Ichnofacies and Microfossils for Depositional Environment Interpretation of The Clastic Pulau Balang Formation, Samarinda." In Digital Technical Conference. Indonesian Petroleum Association, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.29118/ipa20-sg-12.

Abstract:
The Kutai Basin contains prolific reserves of oil and gas. The study of depositional environments is one of the goals of oil and gas exploration. The location of this research is situated in the Tanah Merah area, Samarinda. The objective of this research was to analyse outcrops of the Pulau Balang Formation exposed in the Tanah Merah area to determine the depositional environment. Site specific studies were conducted at 3 localities in this area; TM1, TM2 and TM3. This study combines geological mapping, measured sections, facies analysis, petrography, ichnofacies analysis and microfossil analysis. Geological mapping was carried out to determine the distribution of rock units and geological structures. Measured sections were used for facies analysis and the identification of sedimentary structures and ichnofacies. Petrography was carried out to determine the mineral content of rocks and microfossil analysis for palaeobathymetric environmental analysis. The geological structure of the study area comprises a NE-SW trending anticline and syncline and a left lateral strike-slip fault with E-W direction. The study area is entirely within the Middle Miocene age Pulau Balang Formation and can be divided into three facies associations. The TM1 facies association comprises strata interpreted to be deposited in a supratidal marsh and intertidal flat environment. The TM2 facies association comprises strata interpreted to be deposited in a subtidal, intertidal, and supratidal environment. The TM3 facies association comprises strata interpreted to be deposited in a shoreface environment. The petrography of the study area indicates that rock units predominantly comprise quartz wacke and lithic wacke. Two ichnofacies were identified in the research area 2, namely the Skolithos ichnofacies and the Skolithos-Cruziana ichnofacies and contain ichnogenera namely Ophiomorpha, Skolithos, Planolites, Thalassinoides, Paaleophycus. Microfossil analysis found benthonic foraminifera species including Nodosaria lamellala, N. radicula, Vaginulinopsis tricarinata, Lagena costata, Striatissima vaginulina, Bulimina lappa, Planularia auris, Quinqueloculina seminulum, Bolivina punctata and Lahena laevis. Based on the presence of these microfossils and ichnofacies, it is interpreted that the research area was deposited in a neritic-bathyal environment.

Abstract:
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a cardiac rhythm disorder characterized by rapid, erratic muscle contraction without concordant chamber motion. Given the rising prevalence of AF and failures of pharmaceutical therapies, clinicians have increasingly used radiofrequency (RF) ablation to electrically isolate the abnormal tissue [1]. A typical ablation procedure (PVI) electrically isolates the pulmonary veins (PV) by encircling them with lesions and has a 60% success rate [2]. More aggressive procedures have been proposed to increase the success rate, including wide-area circumferential ablation (WACA), which add more lesions without considering the functional impact of additional scarring [3]. The objective of this study was to develop a finite element model of a healthy left atrium, capable of simulating passive filling during ventricular systole, and explore the functional impact of ablation by simulating various scar patterns.
