Full text
Abstract:
Field studies were conducted at Aberdeen, ID; Ontario, OR; and Paterson, WA, to evaluate potato tolerance to flumioxazin and sulfentrazone. In ‘Russet Burbank’ tolerance trials conducted in 2000 at ID, OR, and WA, sulfentrazone applied preemergence (PRE) at rates ranging from 105 to 280 g ai/ha caused significant injury consisting of stunting, leaf discoloration-blackening, and/or leaf malformation-crinkling at 4 wk after treatment (WAT). By 12 WAT, injury was ≤5%. At 4 WAT, flumioxazin applied PRE at 105 and 140 g ai/ha resulted in injury, whereas 53 g ai/ha did not cause significant injury. At 12 WAT, no visual injury was present at the ID site, whereas flumioxazin at 140 g/ha was still causing injury in WA. Regardless of initial injury, Russet Burbank tuber yields at ID, OR, and WA were not reduced as a result of any flumioxazin or sulfentrazone treatment compared with the nontreated controls. In potato variety tolerance trials conducted at ID in 2000 and at WA in 2002 with Russet Burbank, ‘Ranger Russet’, ‘Russet Norkotah’, and ‘Shepody’ and at ID in 2002 with those varieties plus ‘Alturas’ and ‘Bannock Russet’, early season injury caused by flumioxazin or sulfentrazone applied PRE at rates as high as 210 g ai/ha or 280 g/ha, respectively, occurred, but variety tuber yields were not reduced compared with nontreated control yields. In contrast, at ID in 2001, early injury caused by flumioxazin or sulfentrazone applied PRE at 105 or 210 g/ha translated to tuber yield reductions of all six varieties tested compared with the nontreated controls. At WA in 2001, Ranger Russet tuber yields were reduced by PRE applications of flumioxazin at 53 to 140 g/ha or sulfentrazone at 105 to 280 g/ha, and Shepody total tuber yields were reduced by all rates of PRE-applied sulfentrazone. Russet Burbank and Russet Norkotah tuber yields were unaffected by either herbicide. Unusual heat stress occurring early in the 2001 growing season at both locations may have compounded the effects of herbicide injury and, consequently, tuber yields were reduced in 2001, whereas injury occurring in 2000 or 2002 during relatively normal growing conditions did not translate to yield reductions.

Abstract:
Objective. To evaluate the adequacy of protein intakes now recommended as safe for infants and toddlers. Methods. Subjects were recovering malnourished infants, age 5.3 to 17.9 months, length age (LA) 2.5 to 6.4 months, weight age (WA) 1.5 to 5.2 months, weight/length (W/L) 78% to 100% of National Center for Health Statistics data; and toddlers age 11.4 to 31.6 months, LA 6.1 to 17.9 months, WA 3.9 to 12.0 months, W/L 79% to 99%. Infants were assigned at random to formulas with 5.5%, 6.7%, or 8.0% energy as 60:40 whey:casein protein. The 5.5% was based on FAO-WHO-UNU safe protein and average energy for ages 2.5 to 6.0 months. Toddlers received 4.7% (recommended for 6 to 18 months), 6.4%, or 8.0%. Identical concentrations (weight/kcal) of other nutrients were maintained; intakes were adjusted weekly to reach, in 90 days, the 50th percentile of weight for a LA 3 months greater than the initial one. Results. Infants consumed 125 ± 11 (SD), 116 ± 10, and 126 ± 14 kcal and 1.7 ± 0.1, 1.9 ± 0.2, and 2.5 ± 0.3 g protein Kg-1· d-1; gained 2.4 ± 0.7, 2.9 ± 0.7, and 2.6 ± 0.5 months in LA, and reached a W/L of 105 ± 5, 103 ± 6, and 105 ± 5% of reference. Sum of four fat-folds (Σ FF) grew 13.1 ± 6.9, 10.4 ± 4.8, and 11.7 ± 5.3 mm to 32.5 ± 5.2, 31.7 ± 4.7, and 30.5 ± 5.5 mm; arm muscle areas (AMA) 57%, 51%, 70% to 1004 ± 109, 1017 ± 110, and 1004 ± 116 mm2, still low; arm fat areas (AFA) 93%, 66%, and 93% to higher-than-normal 598 ± 105, 610 ± 101, and 541 ± 116 mm2. Regression of intake on weight gain estimated energy for maintenance + activity to be 81.0 ± 7.5 (SEM) kcal · kg-1· d-1, and cost of gain (storage + metabolic cost) as 7.6 ± 1.7 kcal/g, with no significant effect of % protein. Toddlers consumed 107 ± 9, 103 ± 12, and 105 ± 10 kcal and 1.3 ±0.1, 1.6 ± 0.2, and 2.1 ± 0.2 g protein kg-1 · d-1; gained 3.3 ± 0.7, 2.9 ± 0.6, and 3.3 ± 0.7 months in LA; to a W/L of 102 ± 1, 102 ± 3, and 101 ± 4%. Σ FF grew 9.2 ± 4.0, 7.4 ± 4.3, and 6.0 ± 3.8 to 28.9 ± 5.2, 30.5 ± 3.7, and 27.0 ± 2.7 mm; AMA 31%, 33%, and 34% to 1121 ± 115, 1124 ± 110, and 1117 ± 120 mm2; AFA 53%, 44%, and 45% to higher-than-normal 578 ± 106, 636 ± 99, and 569 ± 68 mm2. Cost of maintenance + activity was 70.8 ± 3.8 (SEM) kcal · kg-1 · d-1, that of weight gain 9.7 ± 1.35 kcal/g, with no effect of % protein. Conclusions. Within age groups, there were no significant protein-related differences in growth. In both infants and toddlers, high-energy intakes resulted in mild obesity, with lean body mass still deficient. Protein intakes two SD below the means in the lowest protein/energy cells, 1.5 g · kg-1 · d-1 for infants and 1.1 g · Kg-1 · d-1 for toddlers, should still be safe for nearly all children of comparable biological ages.

Abstract:
Abstract. This study explores an approach that simultaneously estimates Antarctic mass balance and glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) through the combination of satellite gravity and altimetry data sets. The results improve upon previous efforts by incorporating a firn densification model to account for firn compaction and surface processes as well as reprocessed data sets over a slightly longer period of time. A range of different Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) gravity models were evaluated and a new Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) surface height trend map computed using an overlapping footprint approach. When the GIA models created from the combination approach were compared to in situ GPS ground station displacements, the vertical rates estimated showed consistently better agreement than recent conventional GIA models. The new empirically derived GIA rates suggest the presence of strong uplift in the Amundsen Sea sector in West Antarctica (WA) and the Philippi/Denman sectors, as well as subsidence in large parts of East Antarctica (EA). The total GIA-related mass change estimates for the entire Antarctic ice sheet ranged from 53 to 103 Gt yr−1, depending on the GRACE solution used, with an estimated uncertainty of ±40 Gt yr−1. Over the time frame February 2003–October 2009, the corresponding ice mass change showed an average value of −100 ± 44 Gt yr−1 (EA: 5 ± 38, WA: −105 ± 22), consistent with other recent estimates in the literature, with regional mass loss mostly concentrated in WA. The refined approach presented in this study shows the contribution that such data combinations can make towards improving estimates of present-day GIA and ice mass change, particularly with respect to determining more reliable uncertainties.

Abstract:
This thesis dedicated to the Kit€b al-Imt€‘ wa-l-Mu’€nasa of the classic writer Abu Ÿayy€n al-Tawž¡d¡ has for main goal to point out the encyclopedic characteristics of the work, through the complexity of its structure and the unavoidable dispersion of the content of the themes tackled – (complexity and dispersion) caracteristics being both typical of the chosen literary genre. Tackling such a specific work, shows through the singular nature of the text the importance of mutaqafa (the quest for knowledge) between the intellectuals and the IVe/Xe Bouyide era authorities. The study of the organisation and the structure of the nights periods of a work based originally on an oral exchange takes here a considerable importance, while carrying on a reflexion on the number of the nights, the mistakes or the omisions made by both editors Ažmad Am¡n and t Ažmad al-Zayn. A second part deals with the subjects discussed among the vizir Sa‘d€n circle and introduces Abu Ÿayy€n al-Tawž¡d¡ as a literary man with a knowledge encompassing a large part of the sciences of his epoch. The study of these subjects shows that the preocupation of the authorities was not limited purely to political affairs. It allows the classification of estranged subjects existing here and there in order to understand better the stake and the comprehension of such a rich and complex work. It offers, finally, the opportunity to read the work as a staging of the author. The presence of many translated quotes justifies the choice for the last axis of the thesis which in turn shows the great necessity of a future translation

Abstract:
This dissertation sets out to show the reductive character of identifying Abu Hayyân al-Tawhîdî's Kitâb al Imac wa-l-Mu ânasa as a simple encyclopedia of arabo islamic cultural life at the 10th century, because the work presents the question of language as a fundamental issue in the problem of the relationship of the intellectual to Buyid Power. Indeed, through this problem appear, in the Kitâb al Imtâc, lines of reflection related to what one can call, in the intellectual, the mastery of language, these lines are : the place of the intellectual in the court environment, in this case that of the Buyid princes and vizirs, his relationship with the fields of knowledge discussed within the enclosures of power, and, notably, logic and rhetoric, the establishment of an ethics of language through the promotion of prose as a major discipline of discourse. But this problem of the mastery of language by the intellectual in the environment of power is doubled by that of the role played by discourse in the structure of the Kitâb al Imtâc where one can wonder to what extent the polyphony of the speakers - a general feature of the book which is the object of particular emphasis in the passages devoted to language - corresponds to an organization of discourse proper to Tawhîdî and, therefore, constitutes a personal stand on the question

Abstract:
This thesis is a study of 'Abd al-Jabbar's theory of i'jaz al-Qur'an (the miraculous inimitability of the Qur'an) as expounded in his magnum opus, al-Mughni fi abwab al-tawhid wa al-'adl, part XVI, and in his other works which are related to the subject. The importance of these works lies in the fact that the author was an erudite scholar and a respected leader of the Basra School of the Mu'tazila, and also because his Mughni/ is considered by many as the Encyclopedia of Mu'tazilite philosophy.
As a Mu'tazilite, 'Abd al-Jabbar demonstrates the inimitability of the Qur'an in the light of both his doctrine of mu'jiza (the apologetic miracle of a prophet) and khalq al-Qur'an (the createdness of the Qur'an). This thesis argues that although his theory of mu'jiza is incredibly similar to that of the Ash'arites, 'Abd al-Jabbar's rendering of it and his main sources are not the Ash'arites but rather the "School of Jubba'i"
Besides demonstrating the Qur'anic inimitability through kalam, 'Abd al-Jabbar also discusses its unsurpassable nature, in terms of the Holy Book's literary uniqueness, fasaha. This argument is distinctly different from the theories of his predecessors. As such, the thesis examines his predecessors' and contemporaries' works on i'jaz in order to shed light on the peculiarity of 'Abd al-Jabbar's theory.

Abstract:
Jurisprudence is one of the most important subjects of Islamic Studies because it is the means of deducing religious categorisation of human acts and of deducing the rules which regulate human affairs in a just manner. This study attempts to define the nature of Islamic jurisprudence and its historical development as a discipline through the first seven centuries of the Islamic era and somewhat beyond; to produce a critical edition and to study one of the fundamental texts of Islamic jurisprudence: Bad' al-Nim al-Jmi' Bayna Kitbay al Bazdaw wa al-Ikm. This work is of great importance on account of its unifying influence but its text has never received a critical edition or publication. This thesis consists of two volumes, Volume One is written in English and is divided into three parts. Part One is confined to the history of Islamic jurisprudence from the inception of Islam, through the various stages of development and until the end of the seventh century al-Hijra (1300 AD). Part Two concerns itself with the development of Islamic jurisprudence where the main focus is to present a reasonably clear picture of the various processes that practitioners in the field of Islamic jurisprudence have followed in order to derive (new) rules. Finally Part Three deals, through a critical study, with the manuscript entitled Bad' al-Nim al-Jmi' Bayna Kitbay al Bazdaw wa al-Ikm.

Abstract:
In Sunni estimation, `Ali ibn Abu Talib is one of the four Rashidun Khilafat 'Rightly Guided Caliphs' who succeeded the Prophet. In Shia understanding `Ali was duly designated as his immediate successor by Muhammad. The varying understandings of `Ali are examined in four roles: as Wali [friend of God], as Imam [Leader], as Shadid [Martyr for God], and as Bab [Gateway to Spiritual Knowledge]. In the thesis `Ali ibn Abu Talib is examined as the bearer of many attributes some descriptive with others of a more esoteric nature. A significant term ascribed to `Ali is wali [friend/saint] of God. This is included in the distinctive three tenet Shi'a shahadah. The term and title Imam is used both for the Prayer Leader of a Muslim community and within the Shi'a tradition for the legitimate ruler of the wider ummäh. The concept of the Imam is examined for Shi'a understandings and the comparable idea of qutb pole, within Sufi influenced Sunnism such as the AN i- Sunnat wa jama'at. Within the Shi'a tradition there is a profound awareness of shahid martyrdom for Imam `Ali, and the majority of the succeeding Imams. This consciousness centres in particular on the death of his youngest son, Imam Husayn as commemorated in the month of Muharram and the 121hd ay - AshuraAli is acknowledged by both Shi'a and Sunni Sufi traditions as a key figure in the transmission of esoteric knowledge. A majority of Sufi streams trace their sources of spiritual knowledge to `Ali. A comparison is made between the respective understandings of `Ali's role in the Twelver Shi'a and Sufi expressions. With the development of British colonial rule in nineteenth century India, Muslim traditions found themselves in a new political and religious context as a minority. Movements emerged to create fresh Muslim identities by which to address this situation. Drawing upon a scholarly past tradition, Ahmad Raza Khan led the AN 1-Sunnat movement alongside other Sunni groups and the Shi'a tradition. Within British India, Muslim groups found themselves in rivalry and competition with each other for adherents and to some extent in rivalry with Christian missionaries and Hindu revivalists. Amongst the symbols used in the intra-faith conflict were the Prophet, `Ali and their family. An examination is made of the process by which religious ideas concerning `Ali have been transferred by the migration of Muslim groups from South Asia into the British context. Rivalry between Ah! i-Sunnat wa jama'at and Shi'a groups has continued in their use of `Ali as a symbol of their respective theological emphases. Critical reading of texts in English and English translation relating to the evolution of understandings of devotion to `Ali ibn Abu Talib amongst Twelver Shi'a and Ahl i-Sunnat traditions in the UK is addressedExamination follows of essential elements of devotion accorded to Imam `Ali and to the Prophet Muhammad, and the extent to which each mode of devotion has influenced the other. Parallels are examined between the two traditions regarding the sources of their respective understandings of `Ali ibn Abu Talib. Conclusions are offered from fieldwork and textual study in discussing possible common derivations of these models of devotion and understandings

Full text
Abstract:
The high cost and complexity of commercial illumination systems envisioned for soft x-ray projection lithography (SXPL) will require that their minimum replacement period is likely to be 6-12 months. For a laser plasma soft x-ray source, this corresponds to approximately 109 laser pulses. Given that a deposited film just 100 Å thick of a typical target element (Au, W, Ta, etc.) will reduce the reflectance of a multilayer mirror by an order of magnitude, it is clear that the contamination rate of condenser elements from plasma source debris must approach zero. In the present Sandia laser plasma source SXPL illumination systems, reflectance values of multilayer-coated plasma-facing optical elements are reduced by ~50% within 106 laser pulses. Clearly, large improvements in target debris production and/or mitigation are needed.

Abstract:
Data presented in this report are for both the public and private hospital sector and have been obtained from State and Territory Health Departments for specific ICD-10-AM codes relating to hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, ankle and spinal disc replacement. Data for each state are presented individually with the exception of data for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and Northern Territory (NT) which have been combined. Wrist replacement procedures for South Australia (SA) and Western Australia (WA) have also been combined due to small numbers. This report provides information on joint replacement for the financial year 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022. It also includes long term data from as early as 1994/95 which provides a national perspective on the changing rates of hip and knee replacement since that time. This Report is one of 16 supplementary reports to complete the AOANJRR Annual Report for 2023. Information on the background, purpose, aims, benefits and governance of the Registry can be found in the Introductory chapter of the 2023 Hip, Knee and Shoulder Arthroplasty Annual Report. The Registry data quality processes including data collection, validation and outcomes assessment, are provided in detail in the Data Quality section of the introductory chapter of the 2023 Hip, Knee and Shoulder Arthroplasty Annual Report: https://aoanjrr.sahmri.com/annual-reports-2023.
