Abstract:

A* is a best-first search algorithm that returns an optimal solution. w-admissible algorithms guarantee that the returned solution is no larger than w times the optimal solution. In this paper we introduce a generalization of the w-admissibility concept that we call PAC search, which is inspired by the PAC learning framework in Machine Learning. The task of a PAC search algorithm is to find a solution that is w-admissible with high probability. In this paper we formally define PAC search, and present a framework for PAC search algorithms that can work on top of any search algorithm that produces a sequence of solutions. Experimental results on the 15-puzzle demonstrate that our framework activated on top of Anytime Weighted A* (AWA*) expands significantly less nodes than regular AWA* while returning solutions that have almost the same quality.

Abstract:

Celem artykułu jest analiza search funds jako nowej grupy inwestorów na rynku kapitałowym w Polsce, która stanowi jednocześnie grupę potencjalnych inwestorów dla firm rodzinnych w obliczu braku sukcesji. W części teoretycznej artykułu zaprezentowana została istotność firm rodzinnych w Polsce oraz skala problematyki braku sukcesji. Przedstawiona została również geneza powstania search funds, ich charakterystyka oraz cechy, które sprawiają, że w teorii ta grupa inwestorów jest niemal stworzona dla firm rodzinnych, w których brakuje rodzinnego następcy. W części empirycznej przedstawiono studium przypadku transakcji sprzedaży polskiej firmy rodzinnej na rzecz search fund, która do końca 2020 r. pozostawała pierwszą i jedyną transakcją search funds w Polsce. W wyniku przeprowadzonych analiz wykazano, że sprzedaż przedsiębiorstwa rodzinnego na rzecz search fund powinna na trwałe znaleźć się w katalogu możliwych form dezinwestycji właściciela firmy rodzinnej w obliczu braku sukcesji.

<p>W artykule zostało podjęte zagadnienie diagnozy penitencjarnej jako elementu kluczowego dla projektowania i prowadzenia skutecznych oddziaływań penitencjarnych. Wychodząc od stanu postulowanego w metodyce pedagogiki resocjalizacyjnej i resocjalizacji penitencjarnej, poprzez aktualne rozwiązania praktyczne starano się wskazać możliwości i niedostatki modelu diagnozy penitencjarnej oraz zaproponować kierunek dalszych eksploracji. Opracowanie składa się z pięciu części. W pierwszej omówiono miejsce diagnozy w oddziaływaniach resocjalizacyjnych. W kolejnej podjęto temat diagnozy penitencjarnej z perspektywy aktualnych przepisów prawnych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem elementów sprzyjających indywidualizacji wykonywania kary pozbawienia wolności. W części trzeciej skoncentrowano się na aspekcie prognozowania jako jednym z zadań personelu penitencjarnego, aby następnie przyjrzeć się możliwościom, jakie stwarzają diagnoza penitencjarna i prognozowanie kryminologiczne. W podsumowaniu przedstawiono wnioski z rozważań, które zostały uzupełnione o propozycje mające na celu usprawnienie procesu diagnozowania penitencjarnego.</p>

Abstract:

Purpose – The main aim of this paper is to develop a CRIS systems search profile that would enable CRIS users to perform unified and semantically rich search for the records stored in the CRIS systems. Design/methodology/approach – Prior to the search profile construction, diverse representative types of the scientific research data store systems (CRISs, digital libraries, institutional repositories, and search portals) were analyzed versus available search modes, indexes and query types. Findings – The new SRU/W standard based search profile (CRIS profile) for the purpose of searching scientific research data was proposed, that supports search for all types of data identified through an exhaustive analysis covering all major scientific and research data store systems. Research limitations/implications – Constraints of the proposed profile could appear from the fact that data identified in analyzed systems do not comprise all scientific research data recognized by CERIF standard which, in turn, could call for the profile extension. Practical implications – Search profile has been verified on the data in the existing CRIS systems at the University of Novi Sad. The CRIS search profile enables unified and semantically rich search for the data stored in heterogeneous distributed scientific research data store systems. Originality/value – The new SRU/W-based search profile extensively supports the search domain of scientific research data in CRIS systems. Commitments to SRU/W and CQL standards enable interoperability among heterogeneous, distributed scientific research data sources.

We search for Standrod Model single-top-quark production in the W -gluon fusion and W* channels using 106 pb-1 of data from [Formula: see text] collisions at [Formula: see text] collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We set an upper limit at 95% C.L. on the combined Wg + W* single-top cross section of 13.5 pb, roughly five-and-a-half times larger larer than the standard model prediction. Separate 95% C.L. upper limits in the Wg-fusion and W* channels ae also determined and are found to be 13.5 and 12.9 pb respectively.

Abstract:

The question of a search in criminal proceedings is a multi-faceted one. It is an activity that strongly interferes with the personal, professional, public and private sphere of an individual. Hence the question of possible admissibility, reasons and effects of a search. A search is an act of evidence, a search, which is aimed at finding evidence or persons of significance for criminal proceedings. It is interesting to note that searches are carried out by the procedural authorities in relation to places associated with a person enjoying immunity. This problem will be analysed on the basis of the pattern of admissibility of a search carried out on a person with immunity connected with e.g. the office of the President of the Supreme Chamber of Control.

Abstract:

The purpose of the article is to present the rights and obligations of participants in the proceedings, a model of disciplinary proceedings against students, the functions of disciplinary proceedings and its stages in proceedings before the disciplinary ombudsman and the disciplinary commission. The author analyzes statistical data of disciplinary matters at the Jagiellonian University. The author indicates that this procedure is extremely formalized and it is very often difficult to hold a student disciplinary liability. In addition, the analysis of the rulings leads to the conclusion that the penalties imposed in this disciplinary proceedings are not detrimental to the accused.

Abstract:

The aim of the study was to assess changes in the area and structure of agricultural holdings in 2010-2016. An analysis was made of the changes in the number of farms of different sizes and their structure. The source of data was the subject literature and public statistics data. Research shows that area structure of farms in Poland, despite the changes, is still unfavorable, as small farms dominate. The previous legal regulations, which were aimed at creating from these farms the basis of modern, competitive agriculture in Poland did not bring the expected results. The area of farms and the percentage of large, economically strong units increases, but too slowly. This indicates the need to search for new, effective tools that will accelerate the pace of structural changes in agriculture.

Pathfinding is the problem of finding the shortest path between a pair of nodes in a graph. In the context of uniform-cost undirected grid maps, heuristic search algorithms, such as A ★ and weighted A ★ ( W A ★ ), have been dominantly used for pathfinding. However, the lack of knowledge about obstacle shapes in a gird map often leads heuristic search algorithms to unnecessarily explore areas where a viable path is not available. We refer to such areas in a grid map as blocked areas (BAs). This paper introduces a preprocessing algorithm that analyzes the geometry of obstacles in a grid map and stores knowledge about blocked areas in a memory-efficient balanced binary search tree data structure. During actual pathfinding, a search algorithm accesses the binary search tree to identify blocked areas in a grid map and therefore avoid exploring them. As a result, the search time is significantly reduced. The scope of the paper covers maps in which obstacles are represented as horizontal and vertical line-segments. The impact of using the blocked area knowledge during pathfinding in A ★ and W A ★ is evaluated using publicly available benchmark set, consisting of sixty grid maps of mazes and rooms. In mazes, the search time for both A ★ and W A ★ is reduced by 28 % , on average. In rooms, the search time for both A ★ and W A ★ is reduced by 30 % , on average. This is achieved while preserving the search optimality of A ★ and the search sub-optimality of W A ★ .

The article discusses J.M. Coetzee’s Diary of a Bad Year to argue that although the main protagonist’s views upon social, ethical, political, and scientific matters may be described as rather pessimistic, the novel still portrays artistic creation as a source of solace, hope, and a motivation for improvement in human life. The validity of the protagonist’s despondent outlook upon human life is undermined by the tripartite composition of the narrative, in which his opinions are questioned when juxtaposed with the alternative views voiced by the other characters. It is argued in particular that the story narrated in the novel reinforces the image of the positive role of literature in human existence. W poszukiwaniu nadziei w Diary of a Bad Year J.M. Coetzeego Niniejszy artykuł omawia Diary of a Bad Year J.M. Coetzeego w celu wykazania, że chociaż poglądy głównego bohatera na kwestie społeczne, etyczne, polityczne i naukowe można określić jako dość pesymistyczne, powieść przedstawia jednak twórczość artystyczną jako źródło ukojenia, nadziei i motywację do doskonalenia w życiu człowieka. Zasadność posępnego spojrzenia głównego bohatera na życie ludzkie jest zakwestionowana przez trójdzielną kompozycję narracji, w której jego opinie są podważane w zestawieniu z alternatywnymi poglądami pozostałych postaci. Tekst w szczególności dowodzi, że ukazana w powieści historia bohaterów umacnia obraz pozytywnej roli literatury w ludzkim istnieniu.

Weighted search was explored significantly in recent years for path-finding problems, but until now was barely considered for optimization tasks such as MPE/MAP and Weighted CSPs. An important virtue of weighted search schemes, especially in the context of anytime search, is that they are w-optimal, i.e. when terminated, they return a weight w, and a solution cost C, such that C ≤ w · C*, where C* is the optimal cost. In this paper we introduce Weighted Branch and Bound (WBB) for graphical models and provide a broad empirical evaluation of its performance compared with one of the best unweighted anytime search scheme, BRAOBB (won Pascal 2011 competition). We also compare against weighted best-first (WBF). Our results show that W BB can be superior to both unweighted BB and to weighted BF on a significant number of instances. We also illustrate the benefit of weighted search in providing suboptimality relative error bounds.

„Chcę żyć dla nieśmiertelności”. Fiodor Michajłowicz Dostojewski w poszukiwaniu Boga Fiodor Michajłowicz Dostojewski jest jednym z najważniejszych pisarzy chrześcijańskich w XIX-wiecznej Rosji. Jego prace rozwijają obrazy, typologie, wzorce myślowe i interpretacje egzystencjalne. W niniejszym artykule autor stara się podkreślić elementy wyznaniowe myślenia o charakterze egzystencjalnym, jakie są obecne u Dostojewskiego. Zaczynając od krótkiej prezentacji biograficznej Dostojewskiego, autor odkrywa chrześcijańską wartość jego przesłania, które zawsze zaszyfrowane symbolami w rzeczywistości reprezentuje cenne chrześcijańskie przesłanie i apologię w nawiązaniu do konkretnego znaczenia związanego z istnieniem egzystencjalnym. Pod tym względem ten wielki rosyjski pisarz mówi o ziemskim życiu, obciążonym osobistymi grzechami i namiętnościami, wyzwolonymi przez wiarę w Boga. Dlatego w niniejszym tekście autor podjął próbę apologetycznej perspektywy problemu wolności w dziele „Legenda o Wielkim Inkwizytorze”, rozdziału magisterskiego z jego arcydzieła Bracia Karamazow.

In this letter an Improved Cell Search Design using cyclic codes (Improved CSD) is compared with the 3GPP Cell Search Design using comma free codes (3GPP-comma free CSD) in terms of (1) hardware utilization on a field programmable gate array and (2) acquisition time measures for different probabilities of false alarm rates. Our results indicate that for an additive white Gaussian noise channel in a high signal-to-noise ratio the Improved CSD achieves faster synchronization with the base station and has lower hardware utilization when compared with the 3GPP-comma free CSD scheme under the same design constraints.

The issue of the article concerns the ideological foundation of the moral education goals formulated in the core curriculum of general education for the first stage of education. The analyzes undertaken are focused on the search for values indicating the presence of liberal and neoliberal moral assumptions in the Regulation of the Minister of National Education of 14 February 2017 on the core curriculum of pre-school education and the core curriculum of general education for primary school.

<p>W artykule zaprezentowano metodologiczną zasadność i konieczność zastosowania takiej analizy leksykalno-semantycznej, w której za podstawę przyjmuje się nie wyabstrahowane ponad- i pozakontekstowe definicje słownikowe, ale sposób, w jaki znaczenia kreuje dany (jednostkowy) użytkownik języka w faktycznych zdarzeniach mownych. Na podstawie opowiadań Jamesa Joyce’a ze zbioru Dublińczycy prześledzono niuanse semantyczne słowa woman ‘kobieta’, przyjmując, że w każdym wypadku są to wyrazy doświadczeniowych konceptualizacji samego Joyce’a, tych o podłożu wspólnotowym i tych jednostkowych. Chociaż niektóre ze stwierdzonych konceptualizacji przypominają wyidealizowane definicje, jakie leksemowi woman przypisują dla angielszczyzny okresu wiktoriańskiego słowniki, to dla pełnego zrozumienia woman w Dublińczykach należy uwzględnić wiele epizodów z życia Joyce’a oraz charakterystykę społeczno-kulturową jego czasów.</p>

Abstract:

The author analyses Hannah Arendt’s writings in search of inspirations for reflecting on the contemporary world’s problems in humanistic (school) education, finding such inspirations in the topics that interested the author of The Human Condition and in her perception of politics, citizenship and thinking as such. Koc’s thesis is that educational documents show a clear deficit of reflection on current challenges, often transnational, that need to be analysed from multiple angles. The article emphasises Arendt’s warningsabout non-thinking as an attitude conducive to totalitarianism, which should unsettle anyone interested in the concept of educating young people. Reconstructing Arendt’s axiology of citizenship and emphasising thevalue of journalistic texts as stories that uncover ambiguity and ask key questions, the author calls for a reconsideration of the nature of Polish language education in contemporary school.

In Search for the “National Features in Photography” Summary The main point of the paper is the interest of Polish photographers in nationalist ideas, which has long been one of the forgotten and overlooked episodes in the history of twentieth-century Polish photography. The issue appeared for the first time in 1931-1933, when Polish photographic magazines published a debate about revealing national traits in a photo. It was an aftermath of the idea of the national style in Polish art, promoted since the early 1920s in relation to the needs of the state that just became independent. The greatest authorities of the time took part in the debate, including Jan Bułhak, Józef Świtkowski, Jan Sunderland, and Antoni Wieczorek, who were the main theorists of the Polish photography in the early 20th century. Analyzing the problem, they reverted to various arguments, from purely formal ones, assuming a characteristic tendency of Polish artists to choose particular forms and types of composition (a view based on the theory of pictorialism), through thematic (referring to collective memory and the historical experience of Poles), sociological, and even legal (based on the ideas of Leon Petrażycki). The same arguments were often used later throughout the century. The paper presents the development and theoretical basis of the debate in the early 1930s, as well as later evolution of the concepts which, coined at that time, contributed to the theory of Polish photography in the 20th century.

Abstract In this work we investigate how to extract alternating time bounds from ‘focussed’ proof systems. Our main result is the obtention of fragments of $$\mathsf {MALL} {\mathsf {w} }$$ MALL w ($$\mathsf {MALL} $$ MALL with weakening) complete for each level of the polynomial hierarchy. In one direction we encode QBF satisfiability and in the other we encode focussed proof search, and we show that the composition of the two encodings preserves quantifier alternation, yielding the required result. By carefully composing with well-known embeddings of $$\mathsf {MALL} {\mathsf {w} }$$ MALL w into $$\mathsf {MALL} $$ MALL , we obtain a similar delineation of $$\mathsf {MALL} $$ MALL formulas, again carving out fragments complete for each level of the polynomial hierarchy. This refines the well-known results that both $$\mathsf {MALL} {\mathsf {w} }$$ MALL w and $$\mathsf {MALL} $$ MALL are $$\mathbf {PSPACE}$$ PSPACE -complete. A key insight is that we have to refine the usual presentation of focussing to account for deterministic computations in proof search, which correspond to invertible rules that do not branch. This is so that we may more faithfully associate phases of focussed proof search to their alternating time complexity. This presentation seems to uncover further dualities, at the level of proof search, than usual presentations, so could be of proof theoretic interest in its own right.

Born in Gateshead, England, on May 6, 1930, he received his bachelor's degree at Brooklyn College in 1958 and his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1963, studying under Carl Swisher. His teaching career at the New School began in 1962, and he served for a period as chairman of the political science department. His major work, Search and Seizure and the Supreme Court was published in 1966 by the Johns Hopkins Press. Other works followed. His students and friends valued his contributions to scholarship and his kind and gentle manner. The following are tributes by Michla Pomerance and Louis Fisher.

A direct, systematic, and well-controlled investigation of D2O-Pd electrolytic cells reveals neither neutrons at a rate exceeding 103 s −1 nor excess heat greater than 3% of the total input power generated during the electrolytic process in contrast to the cold fusion recently reported. No difference in the thermal energy outputs between two identical D2O-Pd and H2O-Pd cells greater than 1.5% (or 5%) of the input at 0.5 W (or 2.4 W) was detected. The negative results cannot be attributed to electrolysis-time (0–480 hours), Pd-electrode (cold drawn or cast) size (0.1–0.6 cm diameter × 3–5 cm), power input (0.1–8.5 W), electrolytes used (LiOH, LiCl, and DCl), or failure to deuterize Pd (PdDx with x≤0.6) within the limits cited in the parentheses. If the proposed cold fusion exists, it has to be induced only under some subtle and not-yet-determined conditions.
