Cherry, Myisha. State Racism, State Violence, and Vulnerable Solidarity. Edited by Naomi Zack. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190236953.013.3.

Abstract:
What makes #BlackLivesMatter unique is the implication that it isn’t only some black lives that matter, that is, not only the mostly commonly referenced male lives. Rather, the hashtag suggests that all black lives matter, including queer, trans, disabled, and female. This movement includes all those black lives who have been marginalized within the black liberation tradition, as well as in greater society. The movement highlights the ways in which black people have been traditionally deprived of dignity and human rights. State racism and state violence are sustained together. The law creates a “subrace” out of those whom white society fears and holds in contempt. This leaves not only black Americans, but all citizens vulnerable. A way to fight this form of racism is not only to create a solidarity among the oppressed members of the subrace but to create a solidarity with all members, in “vulnerable solidarity.”

Vanderschraaf, Peter. Justice as Mutual Advantage? Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199832194.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
Necessary and sufficient conditions are proposed for characterizing the general theory of justice as mutual advantage. Justice as mutual advantage has a distinguished history, but is thought to be false because according to this theory vulnerable members of society are apparently owed no benefits of justice. A repeated Provider-Recipient game model shows by example that justice as mutual advantage systems can require that the vulnerable receive benefits, refuting the Vulnerability Objection. Conditions for defining the community of inclusion in justice as mutual advantage systems are proposed in terms of salience. A justice as mutual system is defined as a system of conventions for sharing the cooperative surplus generated from compliance with these conventions that is Baseline Consistent or stable with respect to possible renegotiation in case the community experiences certain changes in their circumstances.

Abstract:
Chapter 5 turns to a more immutable element of biography that also defines the typical do-it-yourselfer: most are white, middle-class men and thus operate from a position of considerable privilege in society, including in public space and in interactions with authority. People of color and people from low-income communities, on the other hand, are heavily disincentivized from participating in activities that skirt legal boundaries due to common societal prejudices and inequality. Some informal urbanisms occur in communities worldwide (and among under-served communities in certain contexts), but members of legally vulnerable groups in American cities are less likely to break the law to make local streetscape improvements, even though their communities often need official investment. Interventions by privileged do-it-yourselfers and the cultural values they represent, while more appealing to authorities, can provoke unwelcoming receptions and unintended consequences in the communities they aim to improve.

Lew, Cheryl D. What do new neuroscience discoveries in children mean for their open future? Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198786832.003.0009.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the last decade, the number of neuroimaging and other neuroscience studies on the developing brain from fetal life through adolescence has increased exponentially. Children are viewed as particularly vulnerable members of our society and observations of significant neural structural changes associated with behavioral anomalies raise numerous ethical concerns around personal identity, free will, and the possibility of an open future. This chapter provides a review of recent research in the pediatric neuroscience literature, common pediatric decision-making, and social justice models, and discusses the implications of this research for the future of pediatric ethics thinking and policy. New research presents challenges to professional and pediatric bioethicist views of the moral future of children in pediatric healthcare and opportunities to examine anew notions of how to consider the developing moral agency of children.
