Full textThe clinical category of "difficult" adolescents has become ubiquitous in public action in France since the early 2000s. In this thesis, we explore this success as a case-study for contemporary changes in the social treatment of youth deviancy. We use two sets of empirical data: genealogical analysis drawn from a documentary corpus and ethnographic fieldwork conducted in an inter-professional network designed to treat difficult adolescents. We produce a clinical anthropology of mental health, relying on a framework based upon social constructivism tempered with interactionism and pragmatism. The category of difficult adolescents is organised by clinical expertise on subjectivity, inspired b\ psychoanalysis while distancing itself from psychiatry. It allows professionals in charge of youth to define, publicise and solve an emerging problem: new uncertainties in the public management of violent and deviant youth. It depicts a residual, interstitial population, located between the various institutions treating youth deviancy. Such a margin is fostered by the specialisation of these institutions and by the poor coordination capacities of local authorities and policy makers. This category operates by an extreme biographical personalisation. It reassigns adolescents to a profile of institutional treatment and makes professional intervention: meaningful. It coordinates various institutions, while preserving their specialisation. It solves the anomic dilemma of vulnerability versus dangerousness, protection versus autonomy, and care versus control. This clinical expertise has a unique ability in building consensus, insuring a pervasive and coercive moral authority. However, the ethical and social stakes in the care-givers' trouble and the cultural and political relativity of violence fall beyond this clinical scope. Thus clinical expertise performs care, which is both an affective experience and an attitude, embodying contemporary forms of public action

Full text@This research focuses on twenty-five adolescents who have been placed in a children's community home. The concept of narcissistic identity vulnerability is making operational with three notions of problematicy, systematicy and reactivity, in an essentially economic and psychodynamic perspective. They enable us to offer each adolescent an etiological, structural and risk diagnosis. We use a battery including: WAIS-R, Rorschach's projective test, Life Line and Genogram, the Family Test and its adaptation to an analysis of adolescents' representation of the institution. The results confirm the clinical interest of the concept of narcissistic identity vulnerability, particularly as we can integrate the physical, cognitive and behavioural dimensions, making it possible to take the complexity of the biopsychosocial functioning of the subject into account. The etiological, structural and risk diagnosis opens up interesting possibilities for clinical expertise as concerns juvenile offenders

Full textThis doctoral thesis focuses on the psychological and identity trajectories of adolescents and post-adolescents affected by the phenomenon of radicalization. The main objective of this thesis is to refine and broaden our understanding of the complex dynamics and individual and collective vulnerabilities that underlie the phenomenon of radicalization among adolescents and post-adolescents. The research is based on a psychodynamic approach that seeks to explore both individual and contextual aspects, shedding light on the multidimensional complexity of radicalization. The research methodology integrates three distinct qualitative studies to gather diverse perspectives. All studies were conducted using semi-structured interviews. The first study includes a thematic analysis of the trajectories of young individuals affected by the radicalization phenomenon and their families' perspectives on it. The second study focuses on the thematic analysis of the discourse of professionals confronted with the phenomenon of radicalization in their daily work. This study aims to enhance the overall understanding of radicalization. The last study reports an in-depth case study analysis of the journey of a young individual affected by radicalization. This study allows a more precise exploration of the underlying psychological, social, and identity dynamics, providing insights into the unseen forces that can push an individual towards radical paths. The results of this research show a link between the crisis of authority and the phenomenon of radicalization. They highlight that the radicalization of adolescents and post-adolescents goes beyond mere adherence to an extreme ideology; it is also a revealing symptom of deep vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities are tied to societal, familial, and individual dynamics characterized by a symbolic deficiency and a crisis of authority. The findings emphasize the need to rethink the structures of authority, taking into account the impact of transgenerational traumas and prompting deep reflection on the potential influence of media in the alienation of young people. It is a call for empathy, ethics, humanity, dialogue, and a critical and constructive analysis of the unseen forces shaping young people's identification in our hypermodern society

Full textMental health issues are common in adolescents and can have a lasting negative impact ontheir overall health. Several risk factors for depressive symptoms in this population are wellknown, such as being a girl or being bullied. School connectedness appears to be a protective factor in adolescents’ depressive symptoms. However, its positive impact among vulnerable groups remains unknown. This master’s thesis has three distinct objectives. The first one isto assess the influence of school connectedness on depressive symptoms among adolescents. The second is to see if its influence varies among vulnerable groups, such as girls, victims of bullying and those who combine these two vulnerabilities. The third is to examine the hypothetical relative impact whether public health interventions aimed at increasing school connectedness, eliminating bullying or eliminating the gender gap could achieve on significant depressive symptoms based on the associations found above. To answer these questions, datafrom COMPASS-Quebec’s 2017-2018 cohort of 17,367 students from 37 high schools in Eastern Quebec were used ( Chapter 1). The results suggest that the students’ reported school connectedness has a protective influence on their depressive symptoms and its influence appears evengreater among young people cumulating vulnerabilities, such as bullied girls. However, evenwith the highest school connectedness scores, this influence may not be sufficient in the mostat-risk students for depressive symptoms.

Full textThis study was completed in Hungary between 2014 and 2017. Hungary is considered a transit country for asylum seekers and unaccompanied minors. While the country's borders were strictly controlled during the communist era, asylum seekers began arriving in the country in the post-communist period and from the early 2000's, the number of asylum seekers has increased considerably. A parallel trend can be observed in the number of whom are hosted by Hungary. This research aims to identify how young refugees, most of whom arrived as accompanied minors, form their pathways of resilience in the difficult political context of Hungary. Trauma and resilience served as conceptual frameworks for this study, wich begins with a theoretical-clinical overview of aforementioned concepts. Thes are also challenged in the study. The author attempts to define the notion of resilience in the specific context of refuge. Given the fact that very little is known about the psychological wellbeing of young refugees in Hungary, this research qualifies as an exploratory study. For this reason, a Grounded Theory approach was use to gain data inductively from the analysis of 13 interviews, wich were completed with young refugees between the ages of 18 and 24. Furthermore, the study includes field studies and interviews completed with professionals working in the sector, as well as the summary of the participatory observation the autor took part in during the refugees crisis in Hungary [...]

Full textOur study concerns the precariousness, danger and violence among adolescents in the Hatikva neighborhood, situated in the southern suburbs of Tel Aviv in Israel; and the care provided for these adolescents by the Beit Ham institution by means of institutional psychotherapy. Here, precariousness rules over the daily life of the adolescent, who is yet a child: here, the child and the adolescent are confronted with precariousness in the most basic of domains, be it that of nutrition, play, development, family and societal climate, protection, space, and relationships. It is thus this relation of basic, structuring, cross-signifying relation, between whole and part, between necessity and legitimacy, which Is lacking or which is too insufficient to allow the verbal exteriorization of the adolescent’s own speech and demands, and thereby constitute support and remedy. Hence, our difficulty: violence and danger among adolescents are linked to the precariousness of the relationships. So it is this basic ”relationship of connection” (J. Lacan), this structuring cross-signifying relation between an utterance and the act of uttering itself, between “signifying material” (J. Lacan) and sense, between the existing organisation and a non-operating presence. Which makes it that numerous adolescents and children are confronted with a matching difficulty between physical and social space, with a psychic and social vagrancy, and with a difficulty to draw on and to resort to external support in order to face the ever-present violence and danger in their living environment. But in this case, it is this “political space” (H. Arendt), this relational space, this “significance of participation” (L. Lavelle) that are to be seriously questioned; or this “decisive cultural step” (S. Freud). But the situation is a critical one because the potential danger is very high for many of these children and adolescents. It is thus politics that these adolescents are directly calling out to, along with us: either the reliability of this guarantee of a common space for all, the right to a housing project, the right to acceptance and protection; or these fundamental, non-negotiable politics for the presence of a child or an adolescent in the world, that is to say, in this relational space, this connective space – cross-signifying – basic and structuring. What about this political existence of an adolescent and a child, whose unawareness is taken as expression, when the political prejudice, the “symbolic misery” (P.-L. Assoun) that so many children are confronted with in this region, no longer allow for this existential solidarity between a presence in the world and in the physical space, relationship and structure, or even this basic cross-signifying relation between presence and participation, between unity and continuity?

Full textWithin the framework of the study of written discourse, we have studied the development of argumentative discourse among 12 to 18 years old adolescents at shool. We have used the interest for detective novels and we have asked the subjects to explain why, among a list of clues, someone seemed more guilty than others. The objects of discourse i. E. The clues, the expression of logical relations and modalisation have been taken in account. They allow to evaluate each text as to the part of narration, description or argumentation. It appears that adolescents are not necessarily able to go beyond narration when setting up argumentative discourses ; but, when they have received specific teaching, and especially the youngest, they seem to argument more efficiently. In fact, most of their difficulties probably lay in the way they use and construct the significance of the objects of discourse
