This study suggests a comparison of literary works from Brazil and Australia in terms of their colonial and post-colonial experiences, using a model of the cultural interactions that characterise colonisation. This model offers a terminology for comparing cultural hybridism in different contexts by schematising possible relationships between the different cultural roots of societies that result from the colonial process. The three main influences identified are the indigenous cultures, the cultures of the colonisers, and the cultures of those transported to the colony against their will: African slaves, in the case of Brazil, and prisoners from the British Isles, in the case of Australia. This model is applied in a comparative analysis of the representation of these colonial and post-colonial relationships in two novels that deal with the formation of new societies in the Latin and British worlds: O Continente (1949), by the Brazilian Erico Verissimo, and Voss (1957), by the Australian Patrick White. The study demonstrates the analytical utility of the model and identifies a high level of morphological similarity between the cultural relationships represented in the two works.

Prado, Joyce Rodrigues do. "Revisão taxonômica de Aegialomys (Weksler, Percequillo & Voss, 2006) (Cricetidae: Sigmodontinae)." Universidade de São Paulo, 2012. http://www.teses.usp.br/teses/disponiveis/91/91131/tde-26102012-164746/.

Abstract:
Aegialomys is a member of Oryzomyini tribe that occurs through the open habitats, west of the Ecuadorian and Peruvian Andes, including the Galapagos Archipelago. This genus, recently described, consists of two species, A. galapagoensis and A. xanthaeolus. Nevertheless, additional information suggests there is one undescribed species in the Ecuadorian region. This fact, along with questions raised in the literature regarding the taxonomic status of Oryzomys xanthaeolus ica, and some reserves about Oryzomys baroni, has motivated a taxonomic review of this group. Within this context the present study describes the patterns of variation of the available samples, in order to characterize the taxa on morphologic and morphometric aspects; to describe the intra and interspecific variation; to assign the valid and available names to all valid taxa; and to establish the geographic distribution of each recognized species, and the kinship. In order to achieve these goals, I studied specimens housed at several scientific collections in the United States, England and Peru. Morphometric (univariate and multivariate statistical analyses) and morphologic (character-state frequencies) analyses were conducted in adult specimens, employing both sexes. The morphometric characters consisted of body dimensions and skull and molar measurements. Univariate normality was tested. At first, I present the genus taxonomic history and a systematic catalog with information regarding the type material of each nominal taxa. The distribution of Aegialomys in the continent is limited by Esmeraldas (Province of Esmeraldas, Ecuador) to the north; by the Hacienda Checayani, Azangaro (Depto. De Puno, Peru) to the south and west; and by the coast to the west. The genus is also found in a continental island close to the continent, Isla Puna, and inoceanic islands that form the Galapagos Archipelago. The morphometric and morphologic data revealed that the specimens examined are similar in some of their external, cranial and dental characters, independently of its geographical origin; however, I notice some variations related to the geography in characters like the dorsal and ventral color, lacrimal position, palate length, presence of anterocone flexus in M1, and presence of anteroconid flexus in M1. A pronounced addition in cranial dimensions is observed through north-south distribution, which revealed the existence of three distinct clusters: North, South and Galapagos of which the names A. xanthaeolus, A. baroni and A. galapagoensis was designated respectively. The samples of Galapagos exhibit morphometric and morphologically similarity to the South samples; however, an important character is shared among the individuals of Galapagos and North cluster, which is the presence of anterocone and anteroconid flexus. The distribution limits of continental species were consistent with the existing climate transition zone in southern Ecuador and northern Peru, where the climate changes from wet to dry, and also consistent with data related to the areas of endemism and barriers to the faunal dispersion reported for other vertebrate groups. The kinship among the species was established based on a morphological phylogeny, revealing that the continental species are more closely related to each other than with A. galapagoensis.

Van, Niekerk Timothy. "Transcendence in Patrick White: the imagery of the Tree of Man and Voss." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1004269.

Full text
Abstract:
This study represents an exploration of White's concept of transcendence in The Tree of Man and Voss by means of a detailed account of some of the key patterns of imagery deployed in these novels. White's imagery is a key mode of expression in his work, not simply manifesting in overarching religious symbols and framing structures but figuring in constantly modulated tropes continuous with the narrative, as well as in minor, but no less significant images occasionally susceptible to etymological or onomastic reading. While no attempt is made to provide an exhaustive exploration of the tropes at work in these novels, a sufficient range of material is covered, and its metaphoric density adequately penetrated, to highlight and explore a fundamental concern in White's work with a paradoxical unity underlying the dualities inherent in temporal existence. A useful way of approaching his fiction is to view the perpetual modulations of his imagery as the dramatisation of an enantiodromia or play of opposites, in which the conflicts of duality are elaborated and paradoxically - though typically only momentarily - resolved. This resolution or coincidence of opposites is a significant feature of his notion of transcendence as well as his depictions of illuminatory experience, and in this respect White's metaphysics share an essential characteristic, not only of Christianity, but a range of religious and mythological systems concerned with expressing a transcendent reality. Despite these analogies, however, the novels at hand are not so tightly bound to Christian, or any other, meaning-making systems so as to constitute sustained allegories, and hence this study does not aim to chart a series of correspondences between White's images and biblical or mythological symbols. Indeed, a criticism often levelled at White - with The Tree of Man and Voss typically figuring in support of this claim - is that he too rigidly imposes religious frameworks on his work. An extension of this view is formulated in the Jungian critique of White's corpus offered by David Tacey, who argues that White's conception of transcendence is consistently challenged by the archetypal significance of the images he employs, which point to a contrary process of psycho-spiritual regression in his protagonists. In a fundamentally text-based approach, this study explores White's use of imagery while taking biblical resonances and archetypal interpretations into account, and suggests that, though White's images are highly allusive, they are not merely agents of imported Christian, or other traditional symbolic values. Nor do they undermine the authenticity of his depiction of the spirituality of his protagonists, or obtrude on the fabric of the narrative. Instead, the range of his images are - though often ambivalent - integral to a network of mercurial tropes which articulate and constantly evaluate a notion of transcendence through inflections and oscillations rather than equations of meaning.

Wolff, David W. "Evaluation of anther-derived, inbred, and hybrid populations of Streptocarpus X hybridus Voss." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/45740.

Full text
Abstract:
The potential of inbreeding and selective hybridization, along with anther culture, for increasing homogeneity with 2 early flowering cultivars of Streptocarpus X hybridus was examined. A 'Concorde' and 'Mixed Nymph' genotype expressed inbreeding depression within 2 generations, characterized by a reduction in corolla, leaf, and peduncle size, as well as an increase in floral deformities (flower part fusions). Inbred populations contained individuals which resembled the parent cultivars for several morphological traits. Such could be selected by cluster analysis of important traits, for the development of inbreeding depression resistant lines for hybrid production of more uniform, seed-propagated Streptocorpus cultivars. Reciprocal differences were observed among hybrids of first-generation inbreds, suggesting that female parent selection is critical for certain ornamental traits such as corolla size and peduncle length. Plants were regenerated from anther-derived callus of ‘Concorde’ and 'Mixed Nymph'. The plants were found to be of somatic cell origin, but exhibited somaclonal variation for overall morphology. Variation for leaf variegation and morphology, days to flowering, flowers per peduncle, peduncle length and leaf area were observed among progeny of anther-derived plants, indicating that heritable somaclonal variation in Streptocarpus may be exploited for increased genetic diversity for cultivar development.

Harrison, Jen. "Incarnations: exploring the human condition through Patrick White's Voss and Nikos Kazantzakis' Captain Michales." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/671.

Full text
Abstract:
Nikos Kazantzakis' Captain Michales is a freedom fighter in nineteenth century Crete. Patrick White's Voss is a German explorer in nineteenth century Australia. Two men struggling for achievement, their disparate social contexts united in the same fundamental search for meaning. This thesis makes comparison of these different struggles through thematic analysis of the texts, examining within the narratives the role of food, perceptions of body and soul, landscapes, gender relations, home-coming and religious experience. Themes from the novels are extracted and intertwined, within a range of theoretical frameworks: history, anthropology, science, literary and social theories, religion and politics; allowing close investigation of each novel's social, political and historical particularities, as well as their underlying discussion of perennial human issues. These novels are each essentially explorations of the human experience. Read together, they highlight the commonest of human elements, most poignantly the need for communion; facilitating analysis of the individual and all our communities. Comparing the two novels also continues the process of each: examining the self both within and outside of the narratives, producing a new textual self, arising from both primary sources and the contextual breadth of such rewriting.

The genus Hylaeamys is considered one of the most complex and diverse of the Sigmodontinae sub-family. They inhabit in evergreen and semi-evergreen forest of cis- Andean tropical and subtropical lowlands and foot-hills from Venezuela and Guianas southward through the Amazonian and the Atlantic rain forest to Paraguay and northern Argentina. Actually seven species can be grouped within that genera but their number and distribuition remains uncertain, especially the number of species in the Atlantic Forest. Analysis of the geographic variation from this species is necessary and justify the relevance of this work. Qualitativy, quantitativy and phylogeographic analyses turn able to observe morphological and geographic variation patterns from different populations through the Atlantic forest. Morphological data corroborate the hypothesis that are two different species in this forest: H. oniscus at the São Francisco Northern bank and H. laticeps at the São Francisco southern bank from southern Bahia to Rio de Janeiro. This work shows that these species are phylogenetically closer to species from western Amazonian rain forest (H .acritus and H. perenensis) than the species that lives in the eastern Amazonian (H. yunganus), and the one living in the dry forests of Cerrado (H. megacephalus). For a better comprehension of the phylogenetically relations between Atlantic Forest species further investigation must be taken including a large number of specimens and collected localities.

Abstract:

Falls, Robert William. "Cambial and photosynthetic activity relations in untreated, wounded, and geotropically stressed white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench.) Voss) seedlings." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/30580.

Abstract:
This thesis reports results of a study of relationships between photosynthetic activity and developmental parameters, and cambial activity (wood formation rate), during and following the period of active wood formation in untreated white spruce seedlings, and in seedlings stressed either by extensive stem incisions, or by tilting. The approach involved the use of two non-destructive methods for measuring photosynthetic activity: chlorophyll a fluorescence using optical instrumentation, and CO₂ uptake using infrared gas exchange techniques. Photosynthetic development was examined by estimating chlorophyll a content from a specific fluorescence parameter (O-level), and by the relative occurence of specific chloroplast stroma and membrane (thylakoid) proteins using electrophoretic and immunoblotting techniques. Cambial activity was determined using digitized image analysis of prepared cross-sections of seedling stems. Several fluorescence parameters were strongly correlated to cambial activity in untreated seedlings during the period of active wood formation (in mid-summer). However, the correlations were severely diminished or non-existent when cambial activity was arrested (in late-summer and autumn). Correlations between fluorescence and cambial activity in stressed seedlings were not discernible at any time, suggesting that the induced stresses resulted in a substantial alteration in normal source:sink relationships. Carbon dioxide uptake measures, either uncorrected or corrected to estimated chlorophyll α content, were not measurably correlated to cambial activity in untreated or stressed seedlings at any time in this system. Chlorophyll α content estimated from O-level fluoresecence, was not related to cambial activity in untreated or stressed seedlings. The relative occurences of two enzymes and proteins associated with photosynthetic carbon fixation, i.e. ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (Rubisco) and Coupling Factor, did not appear to be influenced by applied wounding and geotropic stresses. In contrast to the strong correlations found between fluorescence parameters and current season stem vigour, pre-season seedling height and cross-sectional stem areas were not related to stem vigour. These results suggest that in unstressed white spruce seedlings, the measure of specific chlorophyll α fluorescence parameters, using the methods delineated in this study, offers an alternative and more strongly predictive means of assessing current stem vigour, than measures of seedling dimensions. The results of this study provide strong evidence for, and a degree of elucidation on, the anticipated but previously unestablished existence of a source:sink relationship between leaves and vascular cambium in conifer seedlings. This information should provide an initial foundation for the elucidation of non-invasive methodologies by which to assess stem vigour of white spruce seedlings, and to probe source:sink relationships in other conifer species.
