RIEDEL, ALEXANDER. "The weevil genus Trigonopterus Fauvel (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) and its synonyms—a taxonomic study on the species tied to its genus-group names." Zootaxa 2977, no. 1 (July 27, 2011): 1. http://dx.doi.org/10.11646/zootaxa.2977.1.1.

Full text
Abstract:
The genus Trigonopterus Fauvel, 1862 is briefly diagnosed. At present, four junior subjective synonyms of the genus exist: Idotasia Pascoe, 1871, Eurysia Pascoe, 1885, Mimidotasia Voss, 1960 (syn. n.), and Microgymnapterus Voss, 1960 (syn. n.). Trigonopterus vossi nom.n. is proposed as a replacement name of the secondary homonym T. submetallicus (Voss, 1960) nec T. submetallicus Marshall, 1921, and T. micros nom.n. to replace T. minutus (Voss, 1960: 327) nec T. minutus (Voss, 1960: 341). Idotasia nasuta Pascoe is designated type species of Idotasia. Lectotypes are designated for the following names: Eurysia fulvicornis Pascoe, Idotasia ebriosa Pascoe, Idotasia elliptica Pascoe, Idotasia inclusa Pascoe, Idotasia nasuta Pascoe, Idotasia scaphioides Pascoe, and Microgymnapterus minutus Voss. The type species of Trigonopterus, Eurysia, Mimidotasia and Microgymnapterus, as well as the five species included in Pascoe´s original description of Idotasia are redescribed: T. ebriosus (Pascoe), T. ellipticus (Pascoe), T. fulvicornis (Pascoe), T. inclusus (Pascoe), T. insignis Fauvel, T. micros nom.n., T. nasutus (Pascoe), T. scaphioides (Pascoe), and T. vossi nom.n.. Trigonopterus egenus (Pascoe) is recognized as a junior synonym of T. scaphioides (Pascoe), syn.n.. Trigonopterus oblitus sp.n., is described based on specimens labeled as paratypes of Microgymnapterus minutus. Douttia basimaculata Voss 1960 is transferred to Trigonopterus: T. basimaculatus (Voss) comb.n.. Trigonopterus insignis Fauvel is endemic to New Caledonia, T. fulvicornis (Pascoe) to Sulawesi; the remaining species treated herein are restricted to parts of New Guinea and Maluku. The record of T. egenus (Pascoe) for New Zealand is incorrect.

Abstract:
Abstract This article investigates one stage in the career of Dr. Wilhelm Voss (1896-1974) who was a chartered accountant, manager of the Reichswerke “Hermann Göring” and armament adviser to the Egyptian government after World War II. During the Weimar republic Voss was a respected association official and chartered accountant without a political background. Between spring 1933 and autumn 1934 he integrated himself fast and successfully into the Nazi regime. The article explores Voss’ actions, his motives and family background as well as professional points of contact to National Socialism. At the same time it reveals the difficult development of chartered accountancy as a profession in Germany around 1930 and attempts to professionalize the occupation by different individuals and organisations. This paper takes up new research approaches to the history of elites. The source material is evaluated on the four analysis levels of “authority”, “situation”, “profession” and “self-image”.

Abstract:
The Afrotropical species described as Trachyphloeini Lacordaire, 1863 were examined and their taxonomic status is revised. Atrachyphloeus Voss, 1962 is proposed as a junior synonym of Phaylomerinthus Schoenherr, 1842, Cathormiocerus africanus Hoffmann, 1965 as a junior synonym of Tapinomorphus sylvicola Voss, 1962 and Trachyphloeus pustulifer Voss, 1959 as a junior synonym of Platycopes tuberculatus Marshall, 1906. Atrachyphloeus convergens Voss, 1962 is transferred to the genus Phaylomerinthus Schoenherr, 1842, Trachyphloeus hardenbergi Marshall, 1923 and T. notulatus Boheman, 1842 to Glyptosomus Schoenherr, 1847, Trachyphloeus nanus Fåhraeus, 1871 to Pentatrachyphloeus Voss, 1974, Trachyphloeus pustulifer Voss, 1959 to Platycopes Schoenherr, 1823 and Trachyphloeus setiger Fåhraeus, 1871 to Phaylomerinthus Schoenherr, 1842. “Trachyphloeosoma” brevicolle Voss, 1974, “Trachyphloeus” brevis Boheman, 1842, “T”. nodifrons Hoffmann, 1968 and “T”. squalidus Boheman, 1842 are provisionally left in their current genera, but new genera for them will be described in future papers. The genus Phaylomerinthus Schoenherr, 1842 has been redefined and redescribed. Lectotypes for the following species are designated (current names added in brackets where different): Cathormiocerus africanus Hoffmann, 1965 (Tapinomorphus sylvicola Voss, 1962), Trachyphloeus hardenbergi Marshall, 1923 (Glyptosomus hardenbergi (Marshall, 1923)), Trachyphloeus nanus Fåhraeus, 1871 (Pentatrachyphloeus nanus (Fåhraeus, 1871)), Trachyphloeus notulatus Boheman, 1842 (Glyptosomus notulatus (Boheman, 1842)), Trachyphloeus pustulifer Voss, 1959 (Platycopes tuberculatus (Marshall, 1906)), Trachyphloeus setiger Fåhraeus, 1871 (Phaylomerinthus setiger (Fåhraeus, 1871)), “Trachyphloeus” brevis Boheman in Schoenherr, 1842 and “Trachyphloeus” squalidus Boheman in Schoenherr, 1842. Two paralectotypes of Cathormiocerus africanus Hoffmann, 1965 from Tanzania are described as a new species, Tapinomorphus franzi sp. n. All type specimens are illustrated.

Full text
Abstract:
Many numerical integration methods have been developed for predicting the evolution of the response of dynamical systems. Standard algorithms approach approximate the solution at a future time by introducing a truncated power series representation that attempts to recover an n-th order Taylor series approximation, while only numerically sampling a single derivative model. This work presents an exact fifth-order analytic continuation method for integrating constrained multi-body vector-valued systems of equations, where the Jacobi form of the Routh-Voss equations of motion simultaneously generates the acceleration and Lagrange multiplier solution. The constraint drift problem is addressed by introducing an analytic continuation method that rigorously enforces the kinematic constraints through five time derivatives. This work rigorously deals with the problem of handling the time-varying matrix equations that characterize real-world equation of motion models arising in science and engineering. The proposed approach is expected to be particularly useful for stiff dynamical systems, as well as systems where implicit integration formulations are introduced. Numerical examples are presented that demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

Full text
Abstract:
New variants of concern (VOCs) now account for 67% of all Ontario SARS-CoV-2 infections. Compared with early variants of SARS-CoV-2, VOCs are associated with a 63% increased risk of hospitalization, a 103% increased risk of intensive care unit (ICU) admission and a 56% increased risk of death due to COVID-19. VOCs are having a substantial impact on Ontario’s healthcare system. On March 28, 2021, the daily number of new SARS-CoV-2 infections in Ontario reached the daily number of cases observed near the height of the second wave, at the start of the province-wide lockdown, on December 26, 2020. The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 is now 21% higher than at the start of the province-wide lockdown, while ICU occupancy is 28% higher (Figure 1). The percentage of COVID-19 patients in ICUs who are younger than 60 years is about 50% higher now than it was prior to the start of the province-wide lockdown. Because the increased risk of COVID-19 hospitalization, ICU admission and death with VOCs is most pronounced 14 to 28 days after diagnosis, there will be significant delays until the full burden to the health care system becomes apparent.

Abstract:
A feasibility study was conducted, aiming to explore the potential effectiveness of UV/TiO2/O3 photooxidation technologies for simultaneous treatment of odorant and pathogen emissions from livestock and poultry operations. Several key parameters were tested in laboratory (US) and semi-pilot (Israel) scale conditions including: the effects of light energy dose (treatment time and light intensity), relative humidity and air temperature, UV wavelength, presence of photocatalyst (TiO2) and the presence of ozone. Removal and conversion of odor, target gases (sulfur-containing volatile organic compounds S-VOCs, volatile fatty acids (VFAs), phenolics, and ammonia), and airborne pathogens was tested. Up to 100% removal (below method detection level) of S-VOCs, VFAs, and phenolics, the overall odor, and up to 64.5% of ammonia was achieved with optimized treatment. Treatments involving deep UV band (185 nm) and photocatalyst (TiO2) were more efficient in removal/conversion of odorous gases and odor. The estimate of the operational cost of treatment was based on measured emissions of several odorous VOCs from full scale, commercial swine farm ranges from $0.15 to $0.59 per finisher pig. This figure represents significantly lower cost compared with the cost of biofiltration or air scrubbing.

Abstract:
Plants emit a bouquet of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in response to both biotic and abiotic stresses and, simultaneously, eavesdrop on emit-ted signals to activate direct and indirect defenses. By gaining even a slight insight into the semantics of interplant communications, a unique aware-ness of the operational environment may be obtainable (e.g., knowledge of a disturbance within). In this effort, we used five species of plants, Arabidopsis thaliana, Panicum virgatum, Festuca rubra, Tradescantia zebrina, and Achillea millefolium, to produce and query VOCs emitted in response to mechanical wounding and light cycles. These plants provide a basis for further investigation in this communication system as they span model organisms, common house plants, and Arctic plants. The VOC com-position was complex; our parameter filtering often enabled us to reduce the noise to fewer than 50 compounds emitted over minutes to hours in a day. We were able to detect and measure the plant response through two analytical methods. This report documents the methods used, the data collected, and the analyses performed on the VOCs to determine if they can be used to increase environmental awareness of the battlespace.
