A klasszikus német geopolitika kezdeti – a megalapítója, Karl von Haushofer által – legitimnek nevezett időszakában mélyreható tudományos polémia folyt az új tudományterület értelmezéséről és szellemtörténeti előzményeiről. E diskurzus a legújabb tudománytörténeti és -elméleti feldolgozásokban is hangot kap. A geopolitika tudománytörténetének lényeges része, jóllehet egységes állásfoglalás vele kapcsolatban napjainkig nem született. A vitára irányuló tudományos kutatások során kevés figyelmet szenteltek annak, hogy a klasszikus német geopolitikának – már a legitim időszakában is – volt egy bizonyos militáris jellege. E vonása nemcsak abban öltött testet, hogy vizsgálatainak egy része katonai és háborús témákra irányult, hanem abban is, hogy a geopolitikai szemléletmód új irányt jelölt ki a katonaföldrajz számára. A militáris jelleg alapján – a hadtudomány fejlődési folyamataiból eredően – feltételezhetjük, hogy Carl von Clausewitz katonaföldrajzi nézetei is a legitim német geopolitika egyik forrását adták. Ennek bizonyítását azonban nehezíti, hogy az egyetemes Clausewitz-kutatások nem foglalkoztak a német katonai gondolkodó földrajzi téziseivel. Így tanulmányunkban ezek főbb ismérveinek vizsgálata mellett a geopolitika megteremtője, Rudolf Kjellén és előfutára Friedrich Ratzel eszmerendszerét összevetjük a clausewitzi geográfiával. Célunk annak feltárása, hogy Clausewitz fő műve, a Vom Kriege szolgálhatott-e a klasszikus legitim német geopolitika egyik tudományos forrásaként.

Niespełna rok po amerykańskiej premierze na polskim rynku księgarskim pojawiła się książka, którą waszyngtońskie instytucje think tanks i prasa, zarówno specjalistyczna (od „Foreign Affairs” po „Kirkus Reviews”), jak codzienna (m.in. „New York Times”), zgodnie nazwały jedną z najlepszych i najważniejszych książek non fiction 2018 r., a wybitni eksperci – pośród nich Francis Fukuyama, gen. Michael Hayden (były dyrektor Narodowej Agencji Bezpieczeństwa USA oraz szef CIA) czy nawet Vinton Gray Cerf, uważany za jednego z wynalazców Internetu, i liczni inni komplementowali słowami najwyższego uznania. Oryginalny tytuł, brzmiący w języku angielskim bardzo celnie, a zarazem przewrotnie – LikeWar – co rozumieć można jednocześnie jako „wojnę lajków” i „nibywojnę”, przetłumaczony został bodaj nieco banalnie i mniej marketingowo: Nowy rodzaj wojny, dopiero druga jego część, podobnie do anglojęzycznej, doprecyzowuje, że chodzi o Media społecznościowe jako broń. W istocie jednak tytułowe sformułowania militarne – „wojna” oraz „broń” wskazują dobitnie na główny przedmiot analizy prowadzonej w książce, którą admirał marynarki Stanów Zjednoczonych i jeden z byłych najwyższych dowódców NATO, James G. Stavridis, zdefiniował jako najważniejszą analizę teorii konfliktu zbrojnego od czasów klasycznego Vom Kriege Carla von Clausewitza, skrojoną na miarę wyzwań XXI w.

Durante o exílio na Suíça, Vladímir Lênin não tinha muitas opções de ação além da leitura sistemática de obras clássicas e de missivas dos camaradas que ainda estavam no Império Russo. Em 1915, de posse da primeira edição de Vom Kriege, em três volumes, Lênin empreendeu leitura profunda da obra clássica de Carl von Clausewitz, comentando diversos excertos. O objetivo deste artigo é analisar a interpretação feita pelo líder bolchevique, a partir das anotações legadas à posteridade.

Author of Hermann von Boyen's biography, Friedrich Meinecke stated that the contributions of Prussian twice (1815–1819 and 1841–1847) Minister of War to the military theory were almost completely forgotten. Despite the existence of many thousands of manuscript pages, this opinion is still considered valid to this day. The chief architect of the Landwehr system was also the founder of the concept of the ‘defence system’, crucial to understanding Prussian military thought in the first half of the nineteenth century. This idea influenced, in my opinion, the way of thinking about warfare within the Prussian Army far more than the Carl von Clausewitz's Vom Kriege.

En el capítulo primero de su obra póstuma Vom Kriege (1832), el militar prusiano Carl von Clausewitz señaló que “si la guerra es un acto de fuerza, las emociones están necesariamente involucradas en ella” (Libro I, 1.3). Este enunciado estaba orientado a pensar las acciones y decisiones de los actores dispuestos a ejercer la violencia sobre grupos antagonistas, pero también adquiere sentido en la consideración de las experiencias sociales e individuales de quienes son derrotados en conflictos bélicos. En el antiguo Egipto, la iconografía se caracteriza por la habitual omisión de toda manifestación de emoción en los rostros de los personajes representados. Sin embargo, algunos indicios de reacciones emocionales pueden ser reconocidos, ya sea por la inclusión de inscripciones epigráficas o por las posturas corporales de los personajes retratados. El objetivo de este artículo es identificar en las imágenes de situaciones bélicas y posbélicas del Reino Antiguo (c. 2686-2181 a.n.e.) formas de representar la relación entre guerras y emociones, y en particular el sufrimiento humano involucrado en la actividad militar, y reflexionar sobre la concepción estatal egipcia acerca del impacto emocional de la guerra.

This paper is a summary of my 700-page very academic thesis, in Danish, to be published by Aarhus University Press (AUP). A shorter booklet based on it was published by AUP too (November 2014, 250 pages) and so were a number of shorter articles in English, French and German. In Luhmann’s systems theory and in sociology at large there is a missing link consisting in the lack of a sociology of war. A number of German systems theoreticians use Luhmann’s theory to fill that gap. Yet Luhmann (born 1927), who was a soldier and a prisoner of war from age 15-17, would not write a “Der Krieg der Gesellschaft”. The attempt to narrow this lacuna is indeed a heavy burden and a difficult task, in which it is decisive firstly to get the basic distinctions right about a second order observation of war as a conflict system – to be distinct from a military organisational system. This, I do by beginning with a reconceptualization of Carl von Clausewitz’ form analysis and self-description of war from Vom Kriege (1832). The central point is to observe the self-reference of war, or how war became war about war. Conflict is basically a problem of essentially contested communication. Once this historical self-reference established around the 17th century was in place, war became delimited by its structural couplings to religion, mass media (propaganda), finance, welfare for victims and veterans, law, politics and other functional systems. The costs of war increased, reconstituted and transformed modern society in a way that has formed a range of risks and – of course – neglected blind spots.

La Paz positiva está muy instalada en los Estudios para la Paz como un estado originario ‘bueno’ (del hombre, de la sociedad) que se ha roto, pero que se puede restaurar a través de la mitigación/eliminación de factores negativos, ya sean desigualdades, tecnología deshumanizante, instituciones corruptas, asimetrías de poder. Como si se dijera que lo negativo/mal es un accidente de la historia y, combatiéndolo con medios positivos (empatía, caridad, bienestar, empoderamiento, interdependencia económica, acuerdos internacionales, etc.), habrá que reencontrarse con el bien/positivo: idea de paz y sociedad futura libres de conflictos. Esta versión imperfecta no ha considerado la dialéctica de los opuestos en su pleno sentido, acabando por desterrar las concepciones que suscitan distinciones sobre la 'bondad' del hombre. Los tradujo casi solo en aforismos intimidatorios, difundiendo ambivalencia hacia la guerra. La teoría del contrato (Hobbes) quiere mostrar que el Estado tiene el papel de mediador y controlador de las tendencias egoístas y destructivas de los individuos; de esta forma es garante de acuerdos entre individuos para la seguridad mutua (propiciando así la idea de sociedad civil). La sociabilidad (Rousseau) se entiende como un acto secundario, no natural, inventado por el ser humano por miedo al otro y a lo desconocido, movido por pasiones en parte buenas y en parte negativas. En Vom Kriege (von Clausewitz) la guerra es una tragedia que conduce a un mal uso de la política: explicarla en sus matrices y técnicas tiene como objetivo elaborar estrategias para hacer tanto la guerra como la paz. Hoy el relato en imágenes de la guerra oculta su carácter trágico y realza la impersonalidad de los efectos, trastornado la compatibilidad entre medios positivos y negativos: suscita emociones fuertes que reducen las posibilidades de ritualización del conflicto, accediendo a la descarga de tensión a través de medios negativos (agresión, violencia, armas). Cambiando la narrativa: pensar la paz como un equilibrio conflictivo temporal encaminado a un ideal de convivencia; desatender el habitus de la indulgencia hacia la guerra; confiar el fin de la superación de la guerra a la noviolencia.

"Politische" Theorie des Krieges mag manchem als Widerspruch in sich erscheinen. So wird der Krieg heute auch in der Forschung gerade als das Scheitern aller politischen Bemühungen empfunden. Als etwas, das "nach" der Politik kommt. In Deutschland wird sich dem Thema Krieg daher meist von einem rechtstheoretischen oder einem ethisch-moralischen Standpunkt aus genähert. Ein rechtstheoretischer Ansatz kann jedoch nur darüber Auskunft geben, wann ein Krieg legal ist, der moraltheoretische, wann er legitim ist. Beides ist kaum geeignet, zu klären, welche Funktion der Krieg im politischen Prozess erfüllt. Die Grundlage dieser Arbeit ist die These, dass gerade derjenige, der Krieg nicht führen will, ihn stattdessen notwendigerweise denken muss: Um eine Vorstellung davon zu erhalten, warum Menschen Krieg führen und welchen Platz der Krieg in der Politik hat beziehungsweise welche Wechselwirkungen zwischen beiden existieren. In diesem Sinne hat niemand den Krieg so ausführlich gedacht wie Carl von Clausewitz (1770-1831). Bis heute bietet sein Werk "Vom Kriege" die einzige umfassende Theorie des Krieges. Ich bin der Ansicht, dass es für die Forschung ein lohnenswertes Unterfangen ist, zu prüfen, inwieweit Clausewitz' Ideen noch geeignet sind, die heutige Wirklichkeit des Krieges abzubilden und zu beschreiben; wo gegebenenfalls Anpassungen an die Gegenwart zwingend notwendig werden. Ich behaupte, dass künftige Ansätze zu einer politischen Theorie des Krieges adäquate Antworten auf die Grundfragen finden müssen, die bereits Clausewitz durch seine Ideen thematisiert hat. In diesem Sinne versuche ich in dieser Arbeit, wie Clausewitz den Krieg zu denken, um das diskursive Feld dieser Grundfragen vor dem Leser auszubreiten
To some, “political” theory of war may just appear as a contradiction in terms. In fact, war is often felt as the failure of all political efforts. As something, which comes “after” politics. In Germany, approaches to the topic of "war" therefore usually derive from a legal or an ethical-moral point of view. But the law only can tell, whether a war is legal or not, the moral point of view only, if it is legitimate. Both is hardly suitable to clarify, which function war fulfills in the political process. I will follow the thesis that he, who doesn't want to lead a war, necessarily has to think it instead: In order to get a conception of why people lead wars, what role war plays in politics or - to put it another way - what interdependency exists between the both of them. In this sense nobody thought war as in detail as Carl von Clausewitz (1770-1831). Until today, his book “On War” is the only comprehensive theory of war. I am of the opinion that it will be a worthwile endeavor for research in the field of polical science, to examine, to what extent Clausewitz' ideas are still suitable to illustrate and to describe today's reality of war; where adjustments to the present become necessary. I state, that future approaches for a modern political theory of war must find adequate answers for the basic questions on political theory of war, which Clausewitz brought up for discussion by his ideas. In this sense, I will try to think war like Clausewitz did - in order to spread the discursive field of these basic questions before the reader
