Abstract:
Vocational graduates' readiness for selecting careers is an important topic for vocational education research. Although there have been many studies on vocational student career selection readiness, there are only few studies on the roles of teaching quality, social capital, and psychological capital in shaping vocational students' readiness for selecting careers. This study aims to examine the antecedent factors of high school students' readiness for career selection which involve teaching quality, psychological capital, and social capital factors. This study employed the quantitative approach with ex-post facto design. The data were randomly collected from 279 vocational high school students in North Lampung-Indonesia by means of online questionnaires. SEM analysis was carried out in this study to see the effects among variables. The results show that readiness for selecting careers is influenced by teaching quality and psychological capital, as social capital does not directly influence student readiness. Besides, psychological capital is influenced by teaching quality and social capital. Then, social capital is influenced by teaching quality. Social and psychological capitals together mediate the effect of teaching quality on the readiness for selecting careers. The research findings present some implications for vocational education practitioners wishing to make further improvements.

Abstract:
AIM: Selection processes for vocational training are common and are intended to predict future examination performance (predictive validity). Comparison of selection scores with measures of competence during training can provide supporting evidence that both the examination process and selection process are valid and reliable. METHOD: Selection interview scores for vocational training in general practice were compared to summative examination scores eight months into training between 2003 and 2006. RESULTS: A moderately strong correlation (Spearman’s rho = 0.5) was found between selection interview scores and summative examination scores. CONCLUSION: The ability of a selection interview process to predict future performance in vocational training is highly dependent on careful design of both the assessment of performance and the selection process. The selection interview process of the RNZCGP compares well with international data. KEYWORDS: General practice; graduate medical education; professional competence; educational assessment; intake selection

Abstract:
The author of the article has presented the results of the analysis of national approaches to the implementation of vocational guidance work among young people for the selection of police specialties. On this basis the author has singled out problematic issues in each of the vocational guidance areas (professional information, professional counseling, professional selection and professional adaptation). A number of general problems of vocational guidance among young people has been considered. The author has emphasized the general and special shortcomings in the organization and conduction of vocational guidance in regard to professional choice in general and professions related to the service in the units of the National Police of Ukraine, in particular. The general shortcomings include both the peculiarities of the organization of vocational guidance (lack of a unified system of vocational guidance work, insufficient level of interaction between the participants in the process of vocational guidance, lack of an individual, differentiated and phased approach to each individual while implementing professional choice, etc.) and its content component (low level of awareness of children, parents and teachers regarding the existing social professional inquiry; improper attention to the motivational component of the profession selection, etc.). The special shortcomings include the following: lack of awareness among young people about the peculiarities of different specialties (an investigator, an employee of operational units, a district police officer, etc.); lack of opportunity to try themselves in different types of law enforcement activities within the framework of interaction, for example, between district police station, educational institution, school and parents; insufficient use of media opportunities to adequately cover various aspects of police activities. The author has emphasized the necessity of creating an effective strategy of vocational guidance and qualitative selection procedure, referral and enrollment of young people to higher educational institutions with specific learning conditions.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper proposes an intelligent system that can hold an interview, using a NAO robot as interviewer playing the role of vocational tutor. For that, twenty behaviors within five personality profiles are classified and categorized into NAO. Five basic emotions are considered: anger, boredom, interest, surprise, and joy. Selected behaviors are grouped according to these five different emotions. Common behaviors (e.g., movements or body postures) used by the robot during vocational guidance sessions are based on a theory of personality traits called the “Five-Factor Model”. In this context, a predefined set of questions is asked by the robot—according to a theoretical model called the “Orientation Model”—about the person’s vocational preferences. Therefore, NAO could react as conveniently as possible during the interview, according to the score of the answer given by the person to the question posed and its personality type. Additionally, based on the answers to these questions, a vocational profile is established, and the robot could provide a recommendation about the person’s vocation. The results show how the intelligent selection of behaviors can be successfully achieved through the proposed approach, making the Human–Robot Interaction friendlier.

Abstract:
This article tackles issues in vocational selection seen in extremis in selection for training for ministry. A literature review highlights problems of criteria and in models of humanity and God. It suggests a need for a systematic approach which will be psychologically, educationally, and theologically sound. Recent social interaction and attribution theories in occupational psychology of religion complement each other. They suggest an emphasis on the candidates’ developing understanding and acceptance of self, vocation, or God as “enablers” of a motivating faith. Selectors would listen to the candidate's understanding, try to “map” it, check its functioning, and finally assess. The theory links some old and new techniques to sound social psychology; locates selection and associated research in a wider perspective on selection, training, and development; and distinguishes empirical and theological concerns. It may be tested and improved as it links with wider disciplines.

Although the association between unemployment and offending is well established, relatively little is known about the impact of vocational education and training programs on re-offending, with much of the previous work in this area failing to control for, or correct, selection bias. This article reports the findings of a systematic review, which considers the findings of only those studies that have used experimental or quasi-experimental designs to evaluate vocational training and employment program outcomes for adult offenders. The analysis identifies key features, based on these studies, of those programs associated with the best outcomes and recommends selection criteria for those who are most likely to benefit from prison vocational education and training.

Abstract:
Research demonstrates that a pilot should have specific skills and abilities. Therefore, professional aptitude tests developed by AGAI are used to select the best graduates for the pilot profession. This research investigates the connections between pilots’ academic achievement, vocational selection, and careers. The sample comprises 52 subjects who started studying in 2009, 2010, and 2011. They were evaluated based on their maturity examinations, vocational selection, academic achievement, and professional career. We observed that the average scores for the pilots’ Lithuanian language, mathematics, and physics maturity examinations are statistically significantly higher (p < 0.05) than the average scores of Lithuanian school graduates. The vast majority of the enrolled students completed their studies and began work in their field of specialty. The academic achievement of those working as pilots (a person who has completed 5 years of pilot studies and works as a captain or first officer) differ in that their average scores in physical study subjects are statistically significantly higher. The graduates who received higher study scores during this study show a statistically significant frequency in their employment as pilots (2–4 quartile). These research findings show that academic achievement and vocational selection are characteristics of those who work as pilots.

Abstract:
Purpose – Retrospective studies of therapeutic community (TC) treatment for drug abuse found reductions in drug use, criminality, and increased work participation after treatment completion. These studies have also shown treatment benefits, even without completion, are correlated with days of stay in residential treatment. However, others have found that high rates of early leaving from TC treatment reduce the proportion of clients with positive outcomes, raise the total cost per treated client, and lower the treatment benefit-to-costs ratio. The purpose of this paper is to describe an experimental approach to raising the days in residential treatment using earlier vocational access for clients. Design/methodology/approach – The current study used a random assignment design to compare earlier integration of on-site vocational training in a vocationally integrated therapeutic community to off-site vocational training initiated after one year of residence in a traditional therapeutic community. Findings – The resulting data support the hypotheses that client expectations and early training in job skills increase rate of treatment affiliation, the proportion of clients having effective lengths of stay, and the rate of treatment completion. Research limitations/implications – Research limitations/implications include the difficulty of assuring unbiased selection and controlling treatment assignment and conditions. Practical implications – Practical implications of this research project are to support practitioners striving for longer, more effective lengths of stay, while at the same time attempting to reduce treatment time and increase effectiveness. Social implications – Social Implications of this project are to encourage social support for addiction treatment and emphasize the value of paired residential treatment and vocational education. Originality/value – The originality and value of this research project lies in the adoption of a working model at Phoenix House TC (in-house vocational preparation), which utilizes early in-house vocational education as a means to increase residential program participation, increase employment skills and prospects, and decrease overall length of treatment.

Introduction. The use of a competence-based approach in the practice of training a teacher of secondary vocational education is a part of the requirements for the learning outcomes in the federal state educational standard. However, real organisations do not use the possibilities of a competence-based approach for the selection and forecasting of professional development when improving the human resources potential. The competence model of a teacher of secondary vocational education can become the core of such practice in the system of secondary vocational education. The aim of the article is to substantiate the soft skill model of a secondary vocational education teacher in order to improve the human potential through the procedures of professional psychological selection and forecasting of professional success. Methods. In the course of the study, a theoretical and methodological analysis of the semantic and substantive content of the subject field of research that was relevant to the idea of competencies was used. In the empirical study, survey methods and the expert assessment method were used. Results. In the course of the research, a list of soft competencies of a teacher of secondary vocational education was identified and a sequence of development of a competence model for professional psychological selection and forecasting the professional development of a teacher of secondary vocational education was proposed. Scientific novelty. A separate group of soft competencies was identified on a sample of secondary vocational education teachers, aimed at predicting the changes in both the professional activity and oneself as its subject. Practical significance. The presented sequence of model development can be applied to other industries or types of activities. The presented model can serve as the basis for the development of selection and forecasting procedures of the professional development of secondary vocational education teachers. Funding. The article was carried out within the state task of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation “The System of Professional Psychological Selection and Forecasting of the Professional Development of Teachers of Secondary Vocational Education Based on the Concept of Soft Competencies” (applied research, № 073-00104- 22-01)

Abstract:
Given the importance of students’ judgement of the future rewarding character of studying for their willingness to deliver effort at school, we propose the concept of sense of academic futility to understand track differences in achievement. As research is inconclusive in this matter, this study examines whether negative attitudes such as sense of futility follow from track enrolment. Based on new and unique Flemish data of 4500 first grade secondary school students clustered in 119 tracks in 57 schools, gathered in 2012 and 2014, this study shows by means of multilevel analysis (HLM7) that students’ higher sense of academic futility in technical and vocational tracks versus academic tracks exists irrespective of background features and prior feelings of futility. Furthermore, it suggests a higher increment in sense of futility in vocational tracks compared with academic tracks, establishing the usefulness of this concept for tracking research.

Abstract:
This study attempts to identify the factors that affect the professional re-selection process and its dynamics. It also tries to create a specific assistance model to attend to the population in question. We have seen a growing number of university students who in crisis abandon the field of study they have chosen. This phenomenon requires close attention to the levels of student satisfaction and the quality of the link he has with the university. Over a five year period, 180 triaged re-selection cases, covering a wide spectrum of different courses, were analyzed and attended to (individually or in group) by a Vocational Counseling Service. Our analysis allowed us to detect the lack of elaboration in the initial selection process as one of the causes that lead students to abandon their courses. There is a clear need for public vocational counseling policies and for the creation of student service centers to deal with this phenomenon.

Abstract:
In this article, we analyze how the existence of alternative pathways to higher education, which implies different selection mechanisms, shapes social inequality in educational attainment. We focus on the Russian educational system, in which higher education can be accessed from academic and vocational tracks, but the rules of admission to higher education from these tracks are different. Access through the academic track is highly selective due to obligatory high-stakes testing, which determines secondary-school graduates’ eligibility to pursue higher education. The vocational track is generally less selective with regard to student intake and provides less restrictive access to higher education. We argue that this system has nuanced implications for social inequality. On one hand, transitions from vocational education to higher education can promote greater social mobility by offering an affordable and low-risk gateway to higher education for children from less-advantaged families. On the other hand, more-advantaged families might use the vocational track to higher education if their children face a high risk of failure in the more selective academic track. We test this conjecture and provide supporting evidence using data from the longitudinal survey Trajectories in Education and Careers.

Abstract:
The present data provide support for the reliability of the Multicultural Personality Questionnaire among a sample of job applicants (n=264). Factor analysis confirmed five factors: Cultural Empathy, Open‐Mindedness, Social Initiative, Flexibility, and Emotional Stability. Moreover, the data largely support the construct validity of the MPQ. Correlations with the Big Five were in the expected direction, and as predicted, Cultural Empathy and Social Initiative were both positively related to socially oriented vocational interests and Flexibility to artistic interests. Against our predictions, Cultural Empathy, Open‐Mindedness, and Flexibility appeared to be related to verbal intelligence. A comparable pattern of relations of the Big Five with intelligence and vocational interests was found. Finally, the MPQ scales predicted variance in an indicator of overall behaviour above the Big Five, supporting its incremental validity. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:
In vocational schools, the traditional evaluation approach of forming a double-qualified teaching team has the issue of an imperfect evaluation standard, resulting in low accuracy. Based on the ID3 algorithm, this research develops an evaluation technique for double-qualified teacher team construction in vocational schools. The characteristics of dual-teacher education are gathered, customized training plans are produced, and the selection mechanism for vocational school teachers is maximised based on the requirements of students’ vocational ability training. By calculating the information gain of each attribute, the ID3 algorithm is used to formulate teacher evaluation standards, and dimensionless post-data are comprehensively processed to design the evaluation mode of teacher team construction. Experimental results: the average accuracy of the evaluation method for the construction of double-qualified teachers in vocational schools based on association rules, as well as the other two evaluation methods, was 69.959%, 58.851 percent, and 58.744 percent, respectively, indicating that the evaluation method for the construction of double-qualified teachers in vocational schools integrated with the ID3 algorithm was more accurate.

Based on the theory of person-environment fit, non-cognitive predictors of job performance were studied in a group of information and communication technology (ICT) specialists. From various potential job and training performance predictors seven psychological attributes (personality, vocational interests, grit, growth mindset, self-efficacy, goal orientation and resistance to change) were chosen and tested as predictors of job performance ratings, as provided by either the supervisor or the study participant. The results indicate that grit, vocational interests, and resistance to change predict job performance in this group of ICT specialists. This study adds to the scientific literature of grit and vocational interests as non-cognitive predictors of job performance. Implications for practice include the recommendation of using grit and vocational interests in personnel management processes such as personnel selection or placement.

Abstract:
Introduction. Jordanian education system encourages students to invest their potentials to fulfill their needs, make their ambitions come true and achieve success in their lives. However, many students still face problems in determining their ambitions and vocational tendencies to attain their goals.Aim. This study aims to identify the degree of ambition level and its relation to the vocational tendencies among university students with respect to the common culture. It focused on two main domains, namely the ambition level and its relation with vocational tendencies.Methodology and research methods. A quantitative method was adopted to analyse the data. The study sample consisted of 500 male and female students studying at Al-Balqa Applied University (BAU) chosen randomly. The authors developed a study instrument which was divided into ambition level 10 items. Strong – Campbell Interest Inventory Scale was applied to examine the tendencies of vocational development. This scale consisted of 42 items divided into six domains.Results. The results showed there was a statistically significant positive relation between the ambition level and vocational tendency among BAU students. There were statistically significant differences at (.05 = a) in the ambition level attributed to the effect of the gender factor in favour of females. Also, there were statistically significant differences in the vocational tendencies attributed to the gender effect in all domains except the vocation selection domain. These differences were in favour of males in relation to the study materials domain, but in favour of females in relation to all the other domains as a whole. The vocational tendencies variable was considered a significant variable that increased the achievement of students’ ambitions.Scientific novelty. The study concluded that developing social changes require a high level of ambitions to cope with the continuous developments in different domains particularly the academic domain. Educators can develop students’ ambition level and identify vocational tendencies to excel in their own goals toward innovation and creativity in light of the common culture.Practical significance. The study draws interesting conclusions based on the analysis and discusses practical recommendations for key stakeholders. The Ministry of Education in Jordan should pay more attention to the vocational tendencies among students from earlier stages to direct these tendencies in appropriate ways that provide students with a good academic life leading to decent social, vocational and practical life that gets along with the common Jordanian culture. Besides, universities are recommended to focus on ways of developing the ambition level among students by raising parents’ awareness to set a good example to their children, bring them up from an early age to be ambitious and promote their ambition level.

Abstract:
Interests have been a central focus of counselling psychology (and vocational psychology in particular) for over 100 years. The awareness of professional interests increases self-knowledge and provides occupational information. In career counselling, vocational interests are assessed more frequently than any other vocational construct, though early evaluations (before 13 years old) of professional interests are very rare. The aim of this research is to examine the 3IP construct (Iconographic Professional Interests Inventory; an inventory composed of 65 stylised pictures that represent people in the act of performing a job) in depth, testing more models in addition to the 19 vocational areas proposed in the 3IP manual. Results show that most of the vocational areas can be grouped into 4 second-level areas (“things”, “people”, “leisure”, and “culture”). Moreover, Holland’s RIASEC model is tested; an accurate selection of items reveals that this model works well using 24 specific jobs. The research concludes that the inventory has good psychometric qualities which can grow further by mean of the increasing, in a targeted way, of the number of jobs.

Most vocational qualifications have been gazumped by general educational qualifications that have higher selection value, and their relative esteem is self-perpetuating. The use value of vocational qualifications depends on (1) the appropriateness of, and interconnection between, their work-related and work-based components, and (2) further work-based learning after qualification to ensure that the acquired knowledge and skills can be used in the particular circumstances and conditions of the current workplace. The NVQ experience has confirmed that detailed national specifications cannot match the diversity of workplace learning needs, so a more flexible approach is needed. Qualification policy should be based on evidence of fitness for purpose, rather than political troubleshooting or wishful thinking; and backed by a programme of incisive research.

Abstract:
Faced with the AI (artificial intelligence) era, it is both theoretically and practically important to examine the challenges and opportunities that vocational college education in China faces, as well as to actively explore how vocational college education can overcome the challenges and achieve a realistic path. This paper proposes and implements a wireless network-based vocational college talent management system. The main personnel management system primarily completes business operations related to daily personnel file management, while the data mining subsystem mines talent data using the DT (decision tree) classification algorithm to aid talent selection. At the same time, a new topology optimization algorithm based on the principle of minimum rigidity graph is proposed for talent management system wireless network optimization. The maximum-minimum balance criterion and the user-by-user optimization mechanism are designed to obtain the optimal relay selection and subchannel allocation strategy, ensuring the system’s reliability and fairness. The optimized algorithm has a user security satisfaction of 0.93 in the range of 250 m, which is higher than other algorithms. It demonstrates that this algorithm’s communication link is short, and it has good network connectivity and structural stability.

ABSTRACT INTRODUCTIONInterviews for selection into post graduate training courses are an accepted method of selection. There is the presumption that such interview processes are fair to both candidates and the training scheme. AIMDue to concerns over unconscious bias and a desire to move to best practice, the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners introduced the Mini Multiple Interview (MMI) process as the selection process for doctors wishing to enter vocational training in general practice. METHODSAspects assessed during the interviews were developed through wide consultation and included: reason for wanting to undertake training, managing poor compliance, addressing issues of equity, managing complaints, insight and understanding the role of general practitioners in chronic care. There were 218 applicants who took the MMI. Demographic data as well as scores were collected. RESULTSThe MMI process has good reliability and performs well in several aspects of validity. All three interview venues had similar results. There was no gender difference in overall result or scores. New Zealand graduates scored higher than overseas graduates. Of the 218 candidates, 12 were considered not yet ready to enter training. DISCUSSIONThe MMI process appears to have acceptable reliability and good validity. The structure of the MMI is likely to have reduced unconscious bias. Further research will study the predictive validity of the MMI for this cohort of candidates.
