Abstract:
Vocational graduates' readiness for selecting careers is an important topic for vocational education research. Although there have been many studies on vocational student career selection readiness, there are only few studies on the roles of teaching quality, social capital, and psychological capital in shaping vocational students' readiness for selecting careers. This study aims to examine the antecedent factors of high school students' readiness for career selection which involve teaching quality, psychological capital, and social capital factors. This study employed the quantitative approach with ex-post facto design. The data were randomly collected from 279 vocational high school students in North Lampung-Indonesia by means of online questionnaires. SEM analysis was carried out in this study to see the effects among variables. The results show that readiness for selecting careers is influenced by teaching quality and psychological capital, as social capital does not directly influence student readiness. Besides, psychological capital is influenced by teaching quality and social capital. Then, social capital is influenced by teaching quality. Social and psychological capitals together mediate the effect of teaching quality on the readiness for selecting careers. The research findings present some implications for vocational education practitioners wishing to make further improvements.

Abstract:
AIM: Selection processes for vocational training are common and are intended to predict future examination performance (predictive validity). Comparison of selection scores with measures of competence during training can provide supporting evidence that both the examination process and selection process are valid and reliable. METHOD: Selection interview scores for vocational training in general practice were compared to summative examination scores eight months into training between 2003 and 2006. RESULTS: A moderately strong correlation (Spearman’s rho = 0.5) was found between selection interview scores and summative examination scores. CONCLUSION: The ability of a selection interview process to predict future performance in vocational training is highly dependent on careful design of both the assessment of performance and the selection process. The selection interview process of the RNZCGP compares well with international data. KEYWORDS: General practice; graduate medical education; professional competence; educational assessment; intake selection

Abstract:
The author of the article has presented the results of the analysis of national approaches to the implementation of vocational guidance work among young people for the selection of police specialties. On this basis the author has singled out problematic issues in each of the vocational guidance areas (professional information, professional counseling, professional selection and professional adaptation). A number of general problems of vocational guidance among young people has been considered. The author has emphasized the general and special shortcomings in the organization and conduction of vocational guidance in regard to professional choice in general and professions related to the service in the units of the National Police of Ukraine, in particular. The general shortcomings include both the peculiarities of the organization of vocational guidance (lack of a unified system of vocational guidance work, insufficient level of interaction between the participants in the process of vocational guidance, lack of an individual, differentiated and phased approach to each individual while implementing professional choice, etc.) and its content component (low level of awareness of children, parents and teachers regarding the existing social professional inquiry; improper attention to the motivational component of the profession selection, etc.). The special shortcomings include the following: lack of awareness among young people about the peculiarities of different specialties (an investigator, an employee of operational units, a district police officer, etc.); lack of opportunity to try themselves in different types of law enforcement activities within the framework of interaction, for example, between district police station, educational institution, school and parents; insufficient use of media opportunities to adequately cover various aspects of police activities. The author has emphasized the necessity of creating an effective strategy of vocational guidance and qualitative selection procedure, referral and enrollment of young people to higher educational institutions with specific learning conditions.

Burton, Melissa Lynn. "The Effects of a Realistic Job Preview on an Applicant's Ability to Self-select into Organizations." PDXScholar, 1995. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/4893.

Full text
Abstract:
In typical selection processes organizations gather information about an applicant. Rarely, however, do applicants collect equal information about the job or organization. This unequal exchange can inhibit an applicant's participation in the selection process. Studies have shown that realistic job previews (RJPs) positively influence applicants' job expectations, job satisfaction, turnover, selfselection, etc. Applicant self-selection can benefit both the organization and the applicant in terms of time, money, and energy required during the selection process and after organizational entry. The purpose of the present study was to explore the relationship between RJPs and self-selection. The study assessed the influence of a content valid RJP on applicants' job expectations. It also measured the degree of fit between applicants' ideal job ratings and the job in question. This measure of fit was then related to the applicant's propensity to self-select. Twenty six applicants for an emergency 911 position participated. Each participant completed a Job Profile Measure consisting of three scales. These scales included ratings of job tasks (based on a job analysis), job characteristics (the Job Diagnostic Survey by Hackman & Oldham, 1980), and organizational characteristics (the Organizational Culture Profile by O'Reilly, Chatman & Caldwell, 1991 ). Applicants completed the measure before and after viewing the RJP and as a measure of ideal job requirements. Dispatch job incumbents also completed the measure to provide actual job ratings. Results were limited by a small sample size, but several trends were found. T-tests showed that the RJP did not significantly alter applicants' job expectations. However, chi-square analyses indicated that applicant job task ratings were more consistent with incumbent ratings post RJP than pre RJP. MANOVA analyses indicated that applicant Job Profile ratings and incumbent ratings did not significantly converge after viewing the RJP. Self-selection ratings were also not significantly correlated with fit scores, but they were in the predicted direction. Applicant's with lower fit scores were more likely to self-select out of the hiring process. The trends in the data are encouraging, but more research is needed to be conclusive.

Fox, Karen D. "Prediction of Air Traffic Controller Trainee Selection and Training Success Using Cognitive Ability and Biodata." ScholarWorks, 2011. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/1120.

Full text
Abstract:
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has experienced decreased return on investment caused by hiring too many air traffic controller specialists (ATCSs) who performed poorly in field training, thus failing to become certified professional controllers (CPCs). Based on Schmidt and Hunter's theory of job performance and biodata theory, this quantitative, archival study examined whether factors of cognitive ability and biodata could predict job performance status of 2 generations of ATCSs, poststrike (PS) and next generation (NG) controllers. For each generation of controllers, binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine if any of the independent variables---transmuted composite (TMC) score for PS controllers, Air Traffic and Selection and Training (AT-SAT) test score for NG controllers, average of high school arithmetic/math letter grade, overall high school average letter grade, self-estimation of time to become fully effective in the ATCS role, self-estimation of percentile ranking in the FAA program relative to the class, size of neighborhood raised, or socioeconomic status---are significant predictors of job performance status for controllers as measured by whether they pass the field OJT (i.e., certified or still in training, or failed certification or left training). The regression results for the PS and NG controllers were found to be statistically significant (chi2 (23) = 68.377, p < .001) and (chi 2 (17) = 99.496, p < .001), respectively. Findings that overall high school grade point average and socioeconomic status significantly predicted ATCS job performance for both PS and NG controllers could influence the FAA's use of revised biodata to better predict ATCS job performance. Further research should include studies of socioeconomic status, gender, and race to address new evidence that the AT-SAT has adverse impact.

Dillon, William D. "Public school principal selection by Indiana public school superintendents." Virtual Press, 1995. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/955089.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was suggested by the need to examine the role of Indiana superintendents in candidate selection, the recruitment and selection procedures used in principal selection and the prioritization of criteria used to evaluate the candidacy of individuals for the principalship with respect to Indiana public elementary and secondary schools. A three-part questionnaire was sent to each of 296 superintendents in Indiana requesting a ranking of superintendent functions in selection, candidate determination procedures, and criteria prioritization. Demographic variables were included to determine if superintendents' prior experiences or sizes of districts represented affected decisions about principal selection. A total of 191 responses were analyzed in terms of descriptive statistics and statistically significant differences among demographic groupings. The following null hypothesis was analyzed in terms of five demographic categories: "There are no significant differences among superintendents' ratings of the important selection criteria or desired principal competencies or characteristics on the basis of any of the following categories." Five categories were analyzed. 1. Whether hiring for an elementary principalship or a secondary principalship. 2. Size of district from which responding superintendent reported. 3. Number of principals hired as superintendent. 4. Number of years as superintendent. 5. Number of years as principal (if any). Although statistically significant differences were found, none was determined to represent an important difference among these categories. Candidate competencies considered most important by responding superintendents were the following: "Ability to listen effectively to others," "Ability to communicate effectively with others, and "Ability to work cooperatively with a variety of other people and groups."The data supported communications and "people skills" for principal candidates, and the importance of proven administrative experiences. The data also supported an interest by responding superintendents in controlling the principal selection process.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to examine the subliminal role of interest in preferences for 50 courses available at a community college. This is an idiographic study of educational decisions. It employed a sample of situations and a representative design. Four adults participated in an educational-vocational assessment and in the process of providing vocational guidance their course selection was examined using a logistic regression. The intra-rater consistency of choices ranged from 88%-100% for repeated course profiles. Choices varied from 2-11 courses. Results supported a minor role for vocational interest in these course choices. The overall R-squared values were around .281-.764. It was concluded that (a) adult choices did not rely exclusively upon interests; (b) adults used complex decision-making policies; and (c) the policies adopted were idiosyncratic.
