Abstract:
Vocal psychotherapy is the first model of music psychotherapy that focuses primarily on the voice. Vocal psychotherapy can be defined as the use of the breath, sounds, vocal improvisation, songs, and dialogue within a client-therapist relationship to promote intrapsychic and interpersonal growth and change. Since 2000 the Vocal psychotherapy training program in New York has been training postgraduate music therapists. This training provides the opportunity to learn the theoretical underpinnings that integrate the physical, psychological and spiritual benefits of singing, along with in-depth understanding of the theories from the fields of psychology, traumatology, addiction treatment, and psychodrama. There are now training programs in Vancouver, BC and in Seoul, Korea. An overview of Vocal psychotherapy is provided here and details of the main tenets of the approach are described, as well as techniques used in therapy sessions.

Abstract:
This book has a very specific target audience: singers and teachers in the vocal field. As a result of his experience as a singing teacher and researcher, he presents readers with an alternative vocal training model aimed at working the high region of male medium voices. To follow this path, we approached issues such as the main common technical difficulties encountered by baritones, aspects of vocal classification, aspirated vocal parameters and vocal physiology. Finally, we discussed possible signs of effectiveness of using a vocalize model that works with falsetto emission to facilitate access to head register notes in male middle voices.

Abstract:
Among the most commented upon aspects of Jackson’s singing was a perceived incongruity between her compelling vocal performances and her lack of formal training. Jackson herself distinguished between the home-grown voices she heard all around her in New Orleans and voices that had been honed through music lessons—that is, between what some have characterized as “vernacular” and “cultivated” musical practices, respectively. What becomes apparent from comments over the course of years is Jackson’s ambivalence. If in some contexts she defiantly identified with black vernacular voices—on one occasion calling herself “the world’s most primitive singer”—in others, she seemed to lament not having had the financial means to access the formalized vocal training received, for instance, by friend and musical colleague J. Robert Bradley. In the end, however, Jackson’s performances complicate recognized class-based categories far more than they corroborate them.

Abstract:
The Introduction positions the history of girl and young woman singers in the 1960s in the context of broader histories of vocal training; ideas about voice, respectability, and expressivity; and the models of youthful femininity that were emergent in 1960s Britain. It opens with discussion of vocal discipline in magazines and books produced for young women. This is followed by reflections on the concept of voice as sound and voice as expression, how ideas about the use of voice are tied to gender, and how they have been used by feminist thinkers and scholars in the field of Voice Studies. Then, the introduction provides historical background on vocal pedagogy and histories of accent and vocal discipline in the UK, tying this history to the 1960s and notions of modernity that emerged at the time. It reflects on what voice and freedom of expression signified during the youth and musical movements of the “Swinging Sixties,” and, in particular, on how ideas about voice affected girls and young women in this period. Finally, it provides an overview of the book’s chapters provides an overview of the book’s chapters.
