Bourbour, Ajdari Elena. "Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) Emission during Cured-in-Place-Pipe (CIPP) Sewer Pipe Rehabilitation." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2016. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/2126.

Full text
Abstract:
The maintenance or replacement of deteriorated pipes and culverts is a constant and significant concern for municipalities and transportation agencies in the United States (Donaldson and Wallingford, 2010). Trenchless technologies and especially the Cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) method have become increasingly common ways to preserve infrastructures owing to their feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and fewer social impacts (Jung and Sinha, 2007). Therefore, there is a growing need to understand the direct and indirect effects of pipeline rehabilitation activities on the environment. Nearly all past CIPP studies have focused on its mechanical properties, and its environmental impacts are poorly investigated and documented (Allouche et al. 2012). Sewer pipelines and storm-water culverts are administered by municipalities and transportation agencies who bear the responsibility for rehabilitation and renewal of these infrastructures. In consequence, they rarely allow sampling and research projects in the field due to liability issues. This is a main obstacle to conducting comprehensive, precise, and unbiased research on CIPP environmental impacts and to date, the degree of relevant health effects and related environmental impacts have remained unknown. Numerous building indoor air contamination incidents indicate that work is needed to understand the magnitude of styrene emission from CIPP sanitary sewer repairs. The main goal of this study was to better comprehend Volatile Organic Compounds emission at three CIPP sanitary sewer installation sites in one U.S. city. Results showed that CIPP chemical emissions may be a health risk to workers and nearby building inhabitants. Additional testing and investigations regarding chemical emissions from CIPP should be commissioned to fill in the environmental and public health knowledge gaps. The acute and chronic chemical exposure risks of CIPP chemical steam constituents and styrene to sensitive populations should be further examined. Other goals of this study were to estimate the magnitude of solid waste generated as well as the amount of certain criteria air pollutants and greenhouse gases emitted from onsite heavy equipment for both CIPP and open-cut sites in a U.S city. The results indicated that the amount of open-cut related solid waste, criteria air pollutants, and greenhouse gases were greater than those during CIPP activities. Additional work is needed to quantify pollutant emissions from CIPP and open-cut activities and consider emissions from a cradle-to-grave standpoint.

Abstract:
The research activities presented in this thesis are related to the design of analog CMOS Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits. In particular the effort was focused on frequency synthesizers (Phase-Locked Loop) for transceiver. This work especially deals with critical blocks such as Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) and Frequency Dividers. The first part of the thesis reports the design guidelines of a negative resistance LC-tank VCO and the design of a 15GHz Quadrature Voltage Controlled Oscillator. This represents the contributions to the realizations of a Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) realization in CMOS 130 nm technology for satellite applications in collaborations with the Polytech’Nice Sophia laboratory in France. The second part of this work reports the design contribution of a 60GHz Phase-Locked Loop in 65 nm CMOS technology for Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) applications in collaboration with the LAAS laboratory (Toulouse, France). In particular the design efforts were devote to the blocks working at millimeter Wave (mmW) frequency such as VCO and Frequency Divider (FD). Concerning the Frequency Dividers the Injection-Locked topology was selected for the sake of its high frequency and low power characteristics. In particular the prescaler is an Injection-Locked LC-tank Frequency Divider (ILLCFD) followed by an Injection-Locked Ring Oscillator Frequency Divider (ILROFD). For the VCO the negative resistance design approach has been employed. All cited circuits have been implemented and succesfully tested

Wang, Shen. "Design and Analysis of a Low-Power Low-Voltage Quadrature LO Generation Circuit for Wireless Applications." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39301.

Full text
Abstract:
The competitive market of wireless communication devices demands low power and low cost RF solutions. A quadrature local oscillator (LO) is an essential building block for most transceivers. As the CMOS technology scales deeper into the nanometer regime, design of a low-power low-voltage quadrature LO still poses a challenge for RF designers. This dissertation investigates a new quadrature LO topology featuring a transformer-based voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) stacked with a divide-by-two for low-power low-voltage wireless applications. The transformer-based VCO core adopts the Armstrong VCO configuration to mitigate the small voltage headroom and the noise coupling. The LO operating conditions, including the start-up condition, the oscillation frequency, the voltage swing and the current consumption are derived based upon a linearized small-signal model. Both linear time-invariant (LTI) and linear time-variant (LTV) models are utilized to analyze the phase noise of the proposed LO. The results indicate that the quality factor of the primary coil and the mutual inductance between the primary and the secondary coils play an important role in the trade-off between power and noise. The guidelines for determining the parameters of a transformer are developed. The proposed LO was fabricated in 65 nm CMOS technology and its die size is about 0.28 mm2. The measurement results show that the LO can work at 1 V supply voltage, and its operation is robust to process and temperature variations. In high linearity mode, the LO consumes about 2.6 mW of power typically, and the measured phase noise is -140.3 dBc/Hz at 10 MHz offset frequency. The LO frequency is tunable from 1.35 GHz to 1.75 GHz through a combination of a varactor and an 8-bit switched capacitor bank. The proposed LO compares favorably to the existing reported LOs in terms of the figure of merit (FoM). More importantly, high start-up gain, low power consumption and low voltage operation are achieved simultaneously in the proposed topology. However, it also leads to higher design complexity. The contributions of this work can be summarized as 1) proposal of a new quadrature LO topology that is suitable for low-power low-voltage wireless applications, 2) an in-depth circuit analysis as well as design method development, 3) implementation of a fully integrated LO in 65 nm CMOS technology for GPS applications, 4) demonstration of high performance for the design through measurement results. The possible future improvements include the transformer optimization and the method of circuit analysis.

Abstract:
The need to improve the aerodynamic performance of air vehicles is the origin of intense research on the real-time optimization of the airfoil shape. This real-time optimization can only be achieved by morphing the airfoil using adequate materials and actuators. The object of this thesis is to study smart-material actuators for aerodynamic performance optimization on different time scales (low-frequent and high-frequent actuation). First, the effects of the distinct actuation types, low-frequency large-displacement shape-memory alloy (SMA) and high-frequency low-displacement piezoelectric, on the surrounding flow are analyzed separately using dedicated time-resolved particle image velocimetry (TR-PIV) measurements. The experiments showed the deformation capacity of the SMA technology under realistic aerodynamic loads. Furthermore, it was highlighted that despite the limited actuation frequency the “quasi-static” hypothesis has to be carefully adapted for the Reynolds number range of 200.000. The PIV measurements conducted behind the piezoelectrically actuated trailing edge showed the capacity of the actuator to reduce the shear-layer instability modes. An open-loop optimum actuation frequency of 60 Hz has been identified. Secondly, a hybridization of the two previously studied technologies has been proposed. The implied actuators, SMAs and macro fiber composites (MFCs), have been modelled and the combined actuation capacity has been demonstrated. The designed prototype NACA4412 airfoil has been tested in the S4 wind-tunnel of IMFT and it was shown that the combination of the two technologies allows acting on the shear-layer vortices as well as control the lift.

Abstract:
IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is the next generation of telecommunication systems. The system is based on an IP network and uses technologies from the Internet. The IMS system is designed to evolve from a telephone system into a general information and communication system. It is meant to include television, Video on Demand (VoD), interactive services etc, etc. It is designed to simplify the implementation of newservices in telecom networks. This report investigates security aspects of VoD services when merging an IP Television (IPTV) system with IMS. The investigation covers security functions in IMS, transitionsolutions for authentication of the Set-Top-Box (STB) in IMS, and identifies problems inthe integration of IPTV and IMS. The report concludes that IMS has good solid Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA) functions that will provide security and billing functionality. One problemis found in the media control between the STB and the streaming server. This interface lacked specification at the time of investigation, and some problems have been identified. These problems have to be solved before a system can be brought into service and beregarded as secure.

Abstract:
The co-generation of heat and power (CHP) reduces fuel consumption in comparison with the separate production of heat and power. CHP is thus an important instrument for the reduction of CO2 emissions. Consequently, it is the ambition of the European Union to double the share of CHP in power generation. The methods applied for the assessment of CHP efficiency, however, are often inappropriate. Further problems are accurate definition of the power from CHP and assignment of the fuel consumption to the generated power and heat. Based on the existing problems, the paper offers suggestions for an objective assessment

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a search for the production of down-type b'' anti-b'' quark-antiquark pairs of a sequential fourth generation of fermions. In this search, final states with two same-sign charged leptons (e or mu), at least two jets (including at least one b-jet), missing transverse energy and a large total sum of the transverse momenta of all electrons, muons and jets were considered. Two different scenarios were assumed for the decays of these $b'' anti-b'' quark pairs. In the first scenario the two b'' quarks were considered to decay exclusively into a t quark and a W boson. For the second scenario, variable branching fractions for the decays of the b'' quarks into tW, cW and uW were allowed. The search was performed using data from pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 8 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The used dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 14.3 fb^-1. No significant excess of events over the background expectation was observed. Hence a lower limit on the b'' mass of 0.724 TeV was set with 95% confidence level in the first scenario. In case of the second scenario with variable branching fractions, exclusion areas with 95% confidence level were derived as a function of the b'' mass and its decay branching fractions. These limits are less stringent compared to the result assuming a branching fraction of 100% for b''->tW.

Abstract:
Wireless communication is witnessing tremendous growth with the proliferation of various standards covering wide, local, and personal area networks, which operate at different frequency bands. Future wireless terminals will not only need to support multiple standards, but also need to be multi-functional to keep pace with the demands of the consumers. For such an implementation, the local oscillator (LO) turns out to be the bottleneck, which must exhibit frequency agility by generating a very wide range of carrier frequencies in order to access all the specified communication standards. This dissertation presents various design techniques to realize compact low-cost low-power and broadband oscillators in silicon-based technologies. The two most suitable techniques for broadband signal generation: (1) Use of widely tunable active inductor, and (2) Use of switched resonator have been thoroughly evaluated. A fully reconfigurable active inductor with a widely tunable feedback resistor has been proposed. Using the proposed tunable active inductor in a VCO generates frequency tuning ranges higher than 100%, and helps achieve the highest PFTN Figure-of-Merit among Si-based active inductor VCOs reported in literature till date. The large-signal non-linearity of the active inductor has been utilized to develop the first reported broadband harmonic active inductor-based VCO. The degradation of phase noise due to active inductors is partially solved by a noise optimization guideline for active inductors. Utilizing the low saturation voltage of HBT technologies and high-Q short line inductors seems to be very useful to reduce power consumption of cross-coupled VCOs while achieving low phase noise performance simultaneously.

Abstract:

At present, caused by a large amount of wave energy resources and huge energy capacity, the development and utilization of wave energy have come to be an essential development focus of wave energy manufacturing. The purpose of this research is to simulate the ocean in an offshore environment. A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was used to analyze the propagation of ocean waves. The Volume of Fluid (VOF) multiphase model and laminar model were used to analyze wave propagation in offshore conditions. Function Methodology and Mobile Methodology were implemented by applying User Defined Function (UDF) code which characterizes transient velocity profile. The parametric study was performed to analyze how velocity and amplitude change. The models were first validated by comparing them with previous analytical wave solutions. To prevent the reflection of the wave, a damping term was added by using User Define Function to define the viscosity of the water phase.

Abstract:
A Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) is used to generate a signal with a frequency that is a function of an input voltage amplitude, and is an integral part of circuits such as phase locked loops, frequency synthesizers, down conversion receivers, and clock generators. A typical design flow for a VCO involves architecture selection based on specification, calculation of circuit parameters, simulation, and iterations of circuit parameters based on the simulation result. In such a design flow, changes in specification or process can lead to significant redesign. This report focuses on a C++ based LC VCO generation software that seeks to automate the design process and that includes calculation of circuit parameters, creation of Spectre netlist, invocation of simulation, automated checking of the result, and a feedback mechanism to modify circuit parameters until the design can converge to the desired specification. Object Oriented Programming principles such as inheritance, polymorphism, encapsulation, class abstraction are exercised to maximize reusability and portability to other projects which may require different foundry device models and supply voltages.

The dissertation examines the influence of Nietzsche’s philosophical concepts and stylistic elements on Spanish literature. In that process, it will be analysed how propositions like the overman, the eternal return of the same, Nietzsche’s aesthetics and his criticism of religion form part of selected texts of the so-called generaciones del 98, 14 and 27. This research takes various literary genres into account: poetry (e.g. “A Nietzsche“, “En Flor 50”), prose (e.g. Los trabajos del infatigable creador Pío Cid, La filosofía del hombre que trabaja y que juega), drama (e.g. El señor del Pigmalión) and essays (e.g. Papeles póstumos, La rebelión de las masas). The connecting element of these different literary genres is that they implement, in one way or another, the philosophy of Nietzsche. Hence this dissertation attempts at understanding his influence (1) by discussing the philosophical and societal circumstances under which Nietzsche is adopted in Spain; (2) by presenting Nietzsche’s relevant philosophical concepts and (3) by analysing specific texts with regard to how Nietzschean salient concepts and propositions are implemented there

A difficulty in automatic video object plane (VOP) generation is that not all regions in an object move constantly, making those non-moving parts hard to be distinguished from the background. The generated VOP thus may vary significantly from different frames. A common solution is referring to previous segmentation results in the current segmentation. Existing algorithms include recording the moving state with the granularity of pixels, or of regions as a whole followed by region matching. In this thesis, we compare the advantages and disadvantages of these existing algorithms, as well as study their implementation details. We combine the advantages of these existing algorithms to propose an efficient and stable memory mechanism. We also propose a method to reduce errors due to non-moving regions in the object. Finally, we propose two filters that generate smooth and natural object contour. The experimental results show our proposed methods can generate better video objects.

Abstract:
Master of Science - Science
The theoretical investigation of the Optical Kerr Effect (OKE) and Third- Harmonic Generation (THG) of Au-VO2 nanocomposite thin-films undertaken in this project is motivated by the potential use of the Au-VO2 nanocomposite in nonlinear optical (NLO) devices. NLO devices are a driving force in today fs high technology industry. In this thesis the OKE is estimated and computed and will be compared later to the measured OKE using the Z-scan interferometric laser technique [47]. This is a simple yet highly sensitive single-beam experimental technique used to determine the real part of the dielectric susceptibility. The study of the OKE in these composites has shown that it has a high value, comparable to that found in Au-SiO2, Au-TiO2 and Au-Al2O3 thin-films [29, 33]. This is despite the fact that the Au volumetric concentration in the Au-VO2 composites considered here is 10 percent at most, whereas in the other above mentioned composite thin-films the volumetric concentration range was between 5 − 60 percent. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that the OKE is thermally tunable in the Au-VO2 thin-films, owing to the thermally tunable optical properties of the VO2 [8, 38]. It is found that the magnitude of the OKE is of the order of 10−6 esu when the composite is below 68 0C and it is of the order of 10−7 esu when the nanocomposite thin-film is above 68 0C. The large enhancement of the OKE is due to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of the nanogold particles. Its fast response, which is of the order of few picoseconds [4, 6, 7], makes the Au-VO2 nanocomposite a good candidate as a fast thermally tunable optical switch or modulator. The modelling here of high-order harmonic generation in strongly absorbing media, as regards the amplitude of the primary beam, takes into account pump attenuation only, due to the absorption of light by the media. It is not concerned with pump depletion which is a consequence of the transfer of energy to the harmonics and which is small by comparison with attenuation in absorbing media. The modelling is applied to the so-called transmission and reflection configurations. The former refers to the case in which the high-order harmonic wave is monitored in the same direction as the input fundamental wave, whereas the latter describes the situation in which the fundamental wave is in the opposite direction to the high-order harmonic one. To analyse high-order harmonic generation one has to relate the high-order harmonic intensity to the fundamental intensity [1, 9, 10, 34-36]. In so doing, a general formula for analysing high-order harmonic generation is obtained and reduced to the particular case pertaining to THG in strongly absorbing media. The ratio of the third-harmonic intensity to the fundamental intensity is termed the conversion coefficient or the conversion efficiency, and it is denoted by ƒÅ [23, 34]. It is useful in the sense that it expresses quantitatively the amount of input light of frequency ƒÖ converted into light of frequency nƒÖ, where n is the order of nonlinear polarisation [1]. It is found that the THG conversion coefficient is higher the higher the laser intensity. It is thus advantageous to use a pulsed laser, which achieved very high intensities for short periods, separated by long off periods. The net harmonic output in this case is much higher than one would obtain with a continous laser of the same average output. It is found here that ƒÅ is greater in the reflection configuration compared to the transmission one above and below Tt in the photon energy range 1.0 − 3.0 eV, see Fig. 5.1 to 5.8. However, the conversion efficiency for THG in the Au-VO2 nanocomposites for the picoseconds laser illumination we have considered, is still extremely low, and it is difficult to see a potential use for this system as a tunable frequency converter. The situation would become more favorable with the use of femtosecond laser pulses, where for the same pulse energy the intensity is much greater. The laser pulse energy must be limited to avoid excessive heating of the thin-film. The heat generated as a consequence of the illumination of the thin-film by the laser [23] may be controlled by using a simple cooling device which consists of a substrate on which the thin-film is deposited. The choice of such a substrate depends on whether THG is monitored in the transmission or reflection configuration. In the former a transparent substrate must be used (for example diamond) whereas in the latter an opaque substrate may be used (for example Ag). Calculations pertaining to the removal of heat from the illuminated film are reported, and show that thermal control is manageable but only within limits. To avoid a temperature rise of more than 5 0K the peak laser intensity we found must not exceed 7.4 ~105Wcm−2 with a pulse duration of 5 ps.
