Full textThe research activities presented in this thesis are related to the design of analog CMOS Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits. In particular the effort was focused on frequency synthesizers (Phase-Locked Loop) for transceiver. This work especially deals with critical blocks such as Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) and Frequency Dividers. The first part of the thesis reports the design guidelines of a negative resistance LC-tank VCO and the design of a 15GHz Quadrature Voltage Controlled Oscillator. This represents the contributions to the realizations of a Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) realization in CMOS 130 nm technology for satellite applications in collaborations with the Polytech’Nice Sophia laboratory in France. The second part of this work reports the design contribution of a 60GHz Phase-Locked Loop in 65 nm CMOS technology for Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) applications in collaboration with the LAAS laboratory (Toulouse, France). In particular the design efforts were devote to the blocks working at millimeter Wave (mmW) frequency such as VCO and Frequency Divider (FD). Concerning the Frequency Dividers the Injection-Locked topology was selected for the sake of its high frequency and low power characteristics. In particular the prescaler is an Injection-Locked LC-tank Frequency Divider (ILLCFD) followed by an Injection-Locked Ring Oscillator Frequency Divider (ILROFD). For the VCO the negative resistance design approach has been employed. All cited circuits have been implemented and succesfully tested

Full textThe co-generation of heat and power (CHP) reduces fuel consumption in comparison with the separate production of heat and power. CHP is thus an important instrument for the reduction of CO2 emissions. Consequently, it is the ambition of the European Union to double the share of CHP in power generation. The methods applied for the assessment of CHP efficiency, however, are often inappropriate. Further problems are accurate definition of the power from CHP and assignment of the fuel consumption to the generated power and heat. Based on the existing problems, the paper offers suggestions for an objective assessment

Full textThis thesis presents a search for the production of down-type b'' anti-b'' quark-antiquark pairs of a sequential fourth generation of fermions. In this search, final states with two same-sign charged leptons (e or mu), at least two jets (including at least one b-jet), missing transverse energy and a large total sum of the transverse momenta of all electrons, muons and jets were considered. Two different scenarios were assumed for the decays of these $b'' anti-b'' quark pairs. In the first scenario the two b'' quarks were considered to decay exclusively into a t quark and a W boson. For the second scenario, variable branching fractions for the decays of the b'' quarks into tW, cW and uW were allowed. The search was performed using data from pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 8 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The used dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 14.3 fb^-1. No significant excess of events over the background expectation was observed. Hence a lower limit on the b'' mass of 0.724 TeV was set with 95% confidence level in the first scenario. In case of the second scenario with variable branching fractions, exclusion areas with 95% confidence level were derived as a function of the b'' mass and its decay branching fractions. These limits are less stringent compared to the result assuming a branching fraction of 100% for b''->tW.

Find full textAt present, caused by a large amount of wave energy resources and huge energy capacity, the development and utilization of wave energy have come to be an essential development focus of wave energy manufacturing. The purpose of this research is to simulate the ocean in an offshore environment. A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was used to analyze the propagation of ocean waves. The Volume of Fluid (VOF) multiphase model and laminar model were used to analyze wave propagation in offshore conditions. Function Methodology and Mobile Methodology were implemented by applying User Defined Function (UDF) code which characterizes transient velocity profile. The parametric study was performed to analyze how velocity and amplitude change. The models were first validated by comparing them with previous analytical wave solutions. To prevent the reflection of the wave, a damping term was added by using User Define Function to define the viscosity of the water phase.

Full textThe dissertation examines the influence of Nietzsche’s philosophical concepts and stylistic elements on Spanish literature. In that process, it will be analysed how propositions like the overman, the eternal return of the same, Nietzsche’s aesthetics and his criticism of religion form part of selected texts of the so-called generaciones del 98, 14 and 27. This research takes various literary genres into account: poetry (e.g. “A Nietzsche“, “En Flor 50”), prose (e.g. Los trabajos del infatigable creador Pío Cid, La filosofía del hombre que trabaja y que juega), drama (e.g. El señor del Pigmalión) and essays (e.g. Papeles póstumos, La rebelión de las masas). The connecting element of these different literary genres is that they implement, in one way or another, the philosophy of Nietzsche. Hence this dissertation attempts at understanding his influence (1) by discussing the philosophical and societal circumstances under which Nietzsche is adopted in Spain; (2) by presenting Nietzsche’s relevant philosophical concepts and (3) by analysing specific texts with regard to how Nietzschean salient concepts and propositions are implemented there

A difficulty in automatic video object plane (VOP) generation is that not all regions in an object move constantly, making those non-moving parts hard to be distinguished from the background. The generated VOP thus may vary significantly from different frames. A common solution is referring to previous segmentation results in the current segmentation. Existing algorithms include recording the moving state with the granularity of pixels, or of regions as a whole followed by region matching. In this thesis, we compare the advantages and disadvantages of these existing algorithms, as well as study their implementation details. We combine the advantages of these existing algorithms to propose an efficient and stable memory mechanism. We also propose a method to reduce errors due to non-moving regions in the object. Finally, we propose two filters that generate smooth and natural object contour. The experimental results show our proposed methods can generate better video objects.
Nkulu, Mulunda Franly. "Theoretical investigation of the Optical Kerr effect and Third-Harmonic Generation in AU-VO2 thin-films." Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/259.
Full textThe theoretical investigation of the Optical Kerr Effect (OKE) and Third- Harmonic Generation (THG) of Au-VO2 nanocomposite thin-films undertaken in this project is motivated by the potential use of the Au-VO2 nanocomposite in nonlinear optical (NLO) devices. NLO devices are a driving force in today fs high technology industry. In this thesis the OKE is estimated and computed and will be compared later to the measured OKE using the Z-scan interferometric laser technique [47]. This is a simple yet highly sensitive single-beam experimental technique used to determine the real part of the dielectric susceptibility. The study of the OKE in these composites has shown that it has a high value, comparable to that found in Au-SiO2, Au-TiO2 and Au-Al2O3 thin-films [29, 33]. This is despite the fact that the Au volumetric concentration in the Au-VO2 composites considered here is 10 percent at most, whereas in the other above mentioned composite thin-films the volumetric concentration range was between 5 − 60 percent. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that the OKE is thermally tunable in the Au-VO2 thin-films, owing to the thermally tunable optical properties of the VO2 [8, 38]. It is found that the magnitude of the OKE is of the order of 10−6 esu when the composite is below 68 0C and it is of the order of 10−7 esu when the nanocomposite thin-film is above 68 0C. The large enhancement of the OKE is due to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of the nanogold particles. Its fast response, which is of the order of few picoseconds [4, 6, 7], makes the Au-VO2 nanocomposite a good candidate as a fast thermally tunable optical switch or modulator. The modelling here of high-order harmonic generation in strongly absorbing media, as regards the amplitude of the primary beam, takes into account pump attenuation only, due to the absorption of light by the media. It is not concerned with pump depletion which is a consequence of the transfer of energy to the harmonics and which is small by comparison with attenuation in absorbing media. The modelling is applied to the so-called transmission and reflection configurations. The former refers to the case in which the high-order harmonic wave is monitored in the same direction as the input fundamental wave, whereas the latter describes the situation in which the fundamental wave is in the opposite direction to the high-order harmonic one. To analyse high-order harmonic generation one has to relate the high-order harmonic intensity to the fundamental intensity [1, 9, 10, 34-36]. In so doing, a general formula for analysing high-order harmonic generation is obtained and reduced to the particular case pertaining to THG in strongly absorbing media. The ratio of the third-harmonic intensity to the fundamental intensity is termed the conversion coefficient or the conversion efficiency, and it is denoted by ƒÅ [23, 34]. It is useful in the sense that it expresses quantitatively the amount of input light of frequency ƒÖ converted into light of frequency nƒÖ, where n is the order of nonlinear polarisation [1]. It is found that the THG conversion coefficient is higher the higher the laser intensity. It is thus advantageous to use a pulsed laser, which achieved very high intensities for short periods, separated by long off periods. The net harmonic output in this case is much higher than one would obtain with a continous laser of the same average output. It is found here that ƒÅ is greater in the reflection configuration compared to the transmission one above and below Tt in the photon energy range 1.0 − 3.0 eV, see Fig. 5.1 to 5.8. However, the conversion efficiency for THG in the Au-VO2 nanocomposites for the picoseconds laser illumination we have considered, is still extremely low, and it is difficult to see a potential use for this system as a tunable frequency converter. The situation would become more favorable with the use of femtosecond laser pulses, where for the same pulse energy the intensity is much greater. The laser pulse energy must be limited to avoid excessive heating of the thin-film. The heat generated as a consequence of the illumination of the thin-film by the laser [23] may be controlled by using a simple cooling device which consists of a substrate on which the thin-film is deposited. The choice of such a substrate depends on whether THG is monitored in the transmission or reflection configuration. In the former a transparent substrate must be used (for example diamond) whereas in the latter an opaque substrate may be used (for example Ag). Calculations pertaining to the removal of heat from the illuminated film are reported, and show that thermal control is manageable but only within limits. To avoid a temperature rise of more than 5 0K the peak laser intensity we found must not exceed 7.4 ~105Wcm−2 with a pulse duration of 5 ps.
