Abstract:
Designers are often concerned with communication through the visual; we focus on the printed object, images on screens, furniture, spaces, and other visual experiences. We should also be cognizant of audio and its communicative properties, especially when contextualized with visual content. Pairing visuals and audio can make a greater impact upon a viewer/listener than each media might make alone. My research focuses on a practice of working within strict sets of rules and boundaries to create visual-audio work. This visual-audio work not only communicates a concept or idea, but also lives as a research artifact of my design processes.

Evans, Benjamin D. "Learning transformation-invariant visual representations in spiking neural networks." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2012. https://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:15bdf771-de28-400e-a1a7-82228c7f01e4.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to understand the learning mechanisms which underpin the process of visual object recognition in the primate ventral visual system. The computational crux of this problem lies in the ability to retain specificity to recognize particular objects or faces, while exhibiting generality across natural variations and distortions in the view (DiCarlo et al., 2012). In particular, the work presented is focussed on gaining insight into the processes through which transformation-invariant visual representations may develop in the primate ventral visual system. The primary motivation for this work is the belief that some of the fundamental mechanisms employed in the primate visual system may only be captured through modelling the individual action potentials of neurons and therefore, existing rate-coded models of this process constitute an inadequate level of description to fully understand the learning processes of visual object recognition. To this end, spiking neural network models are formulated and applied to the problem of learning transformation-invariant visual representations, using a spike-time dependent learning rule to adjust the synaptic efficacies between the neurons. The ways in which the existing rate-coded CT (Stringer et al., 2006) and Trace (Földiák, 1991) learning mechanisms may operate in a simple spiking neural network model are explored, and these findings are then applied to a more accurate model using realistic 3-D stimuli. Three mechanisms are then examined, through which a spiking neural network may solve the problem of learning separate transformation-invariant representations in scenes composed of multiple stimuli by temporally segmenting competing input representations. The spike-time dependent plasticity in the feed-forward connections is then shown to be able to exploit these input layer dynamics to form individual stimulus representations in the output layer. Finally, the work is evaluated and future directions of investigation are proposed.

Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] One common task in Computer Vision is the estimation of three-dimensional surface shape from two-dimensional images. This task is important as a precursor to higher level tasks such as object recognition - since shape of an object gives clues to what the object is - and object modelling for graphics. Many visual cues have been suggested in the literature to provide shape information, including the shading of an object, its occluding contours (the outline of the object that slants away from the viewer) and its appearance from two or more views. If the image exhibits a significant amount of texture, then this too may be used as a shape cue. Here, ‘texture’ is taken to mean the pattern on the surface of the object, such as the dots on a pear, or the tartan pattern on a tablecloth. This problem of estimating the shape of an object based on its texture is referred to as shape-form-texture and it is the subject of this thesis . . . The work in this thesis is likely to impact in a number of ways. The second shape-form-texture algorithm provides one of the most general solutions to the problem. On the other hand, if the assumptions of the first shape-form-texture algorithm are met, this algorithm provides an extremely usable method, in that users should be able to input images of textured objects and click on the frontal texture to quickly reconstruct a fairly good estimation of the surface. And lastly, the algorithm for estimating the transformation between textures can be used as a part of many shape-form-texture algorithms, as well as being useful in other areas of Computer Vision. This thesis gives two examples of other applications for the method: re-texturing an object and placing objects in a scene.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the study has been to investigate how leadership can support organisational change by empowering Project Managers and Team Leaders to encourage organisational change into a Lean/Agile organisation. Lean is a management philosophy based on measuring flow efficiency instead of resource efficiency. To be able to create flow there are certain basic principles to be followed such as minimising waste, working in a team and constantly strive for improvement. It has in several studies been pointed out that leadership is an important factor in creating a successful organisational change that lasts. We have in our study strengthen the implementation of Lean by focusing on visual planning, feedback and leadership connected with theories on organisational change. This was done by providing by coaching leadership during the workshops and also a study visit for one of the pilot groups that consisted of Team Leaders and Project Managers from two of the divisions at Saab Technologies. In conclusion, the study has shown that leadership is a necessary factor to succeed with a reorganisation irrespective of what level in the company is being reorganised. The Management Teams have to lead with visions and create long-term goals. Based on these goals, clear milestones should be created that are implemented and then evaluated in short intervals, these milestones then sipper down the to the levels below in the organisation where the milestones and goals are translated from vision into action. The picture of that a reorganisation changes the company overnight needs to be erased in benefit of creating small continuous changes that in the long run will lead to a new organisation. The Project Managers and Team Leaders also have to lead their projects and teams for the reorganisation to evolve and not stagnate. Furthermore, the leadership has to be adapted to every situation, keeping in mind that teams and projects are in different stages just as a reorganisation. Visual planning has worked as a translator and as something reachable in the reorganisation and also as an anchor to be able to continue the implementation of Lean within the organisation.

Morimoto, Mai. "Signal transformation at the input and output of the Drosophila visual system." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2017. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/267911.

Full text
Abstract:
A key function of the nervous system is to sample data from the external world, generate internal signals, and transform them into meaningful information that can be used to trigger behaviour. In order to gain insight into the underlying mechanism for signal transformation, the visual system has been extensively studied: partly owing to the stimulus being reliably presentable, and the anatomy being well described. The Drosophila visual system is one such system, with the added advantage of genetic tractability. In this thesis, I studied the filtering property of visual neurons at two levels, biophysical and circuit levels. The first study looks at signal transformation at the biophysical level, at the input of the visual system, in photoreceptors. Voltage-gated potassium channels counteract the depolarization caused by opening of light sensitive channels, and the heterogeneous properties of their kinetics can fine-tune the photoreceptor’s frequency response to fulfill the animal’s ecological requirements. Shaker (Kv1) and Shab (Kv2) have been identified as fast and slow inactivating components of the photoreceptor’s outward currents, however a current with intermediate kinetics (IKf) has not been molecularly identified, but had been postulated to be Shal (Kv4). I focused on characterizing this current using whole-cell patch clamp in wild type and mutants, and using antibodies for Shal. My results from whole-cell patch clamp indicated that IKf in adult R1-6 cells are not Shal, from their voltage dependence and insensitivity to a Kv4 blocker. This calls for alternative molecular basis for IKf, which is likely to be a slow inactivating component of Shaker, or a combination of its many splice variants. The second study looks at signal transformation at the circuit level, at the output end, in the third optic neuropil, lobula. Visual projection neurons project from the lobula to the central brain, and have been proposed to carry behaviourally relevant visual features to higher brain regions. It was recently shown that optogenetic activation of individual visual projection neuron types could induce distinct behaviours such as takeoff and backward walking, linking these visual neurons to specific behavioural programs downstream. Using in vivo two-photon calcium imaging, I recorded visually evoked calcium responses from three of these cell types. Cell types that showed induced takeoff and backward walking preferentially responded to dark looming stimuli or fragmented expanding local features, suggesting their role in behaviours triggered by object approach. To explore how this visual information is transformed in the downstream circuit, we identified several candidate neurons that receive input from this cell type by anatomical overlap, and then validated their connections using optogenetic activation and calcium imaging. One downstream cell-type that projects bilaterally had very similar response properties to its upstream partner, whereas another cell-type that projects ipsilaterally seemed to filter out some information from its upstream partner. This is one of the first studies that functionally characterizes lobula visual projection neurons and their downstream partners in Drosophila, and their response properties agree with the general idea that visual information becomes increasingly selective as it is sent to higher brain regions.

Guerrette, Nadine. "The effect of visual transformation on implicitly and explicitly timed bimanual drawing tasks." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/27689.

Full text
Abstract:
Mirror drawing is a challenging task because appropriate hand actions must be planned and directed despite receiving visual feedback that is reversed by the mirror. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether visual transformation impacts the timing and spatial variability of explicitly and implicitly timed bimanual drawing tasks differently. To examine these issues, ten healthy participants bimanually drew various template shapes (circles, lines, vertical triangles and horizontal triangles) under normal (untransformed) and mirror-reflected vision conditions. Drawing movements were paced by a metronome and all templates were drawn in both symmetrical and asymmetrical coordination modes. Our results show that mirror feedback increased timing errors on implicit timing tasks but not explicit timing tasks. Mirror feedback also resulted in greater spatial variability and decreased interlimb coordination. These results provide insight into the role of visual information in the timing and performance of different types of bimanual drawing tasks.

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 88-96).
The objective of this paper is to investigate how UNICEF (the United Nations Children's Fund) represents the notion of childhood. A content analysis of 690 photographs as well as an in-depth textual analysis of the most authoritative publications is conducted to decode childhood representations. The methodological approaches are both quantitative (content analysis) and qualitative (textual analysis). The photographic and publications data are obtained from the UNICEF website for the period 1999 to 2003. Inscribed in the visual images are historical western notions of childhood as a blissful stage of life in which passivity and vulnerability are featured. These inscriptions are rooted in technologies of scientific knowledge and myths, which explains therefore their persuasiveness. As regards arguments that development institutions export ideal notions of childhood specific only to western societies, the paper finds that while such ideals certainly are present in the representations, the proper ideal is by no means the sole embodiment of exported notions. Over the last five years, UNICEF has begun to incorporate new views of children as socially competent, valuable social actors in their own right (a school of thought that has begun to be theorised, most notably, by the 'New Sociology of Childhood'). However, the ideas of children as social actors attains a particular meaning in UNICEF texts. Many instances of children's strength and resiliency in third worlds are not represented as constitutive of what the idea of child agency means.

Abstract:
The following portfolio is representative of my own artistic practice that combines the role of artist, educator, peace worker and researcher into one entity. The works are drawn from a back catalogue of fifty plus collaborative arts projects that has engaged with individuals and communities in different locations over the past twenty years. These works have been delivered within formal and informal educational settings. While each piece can be read as an individual artwork – collectively they talk to common issues related to visual art practice, public pedagogy and conflict transformation. I have identified four consistent themes present in the work Social Justice, Human Rights, Development Education, Democratic Education, Inclusion and Identity. My practice can be described as a socially engaged art practice. However, while I pay close attention to the aesthetics and artistic impression of my work, I place a primary importance on education by asking a simple question which often provides a myriad of highly complex answers. I ask - What is being learned? I have worked with children, young people and others who live in the midst of socio-political conflict or in societies affected by underdevelopment. This combination of experiences has enabled me to forge a deep understanding of the role of identity politics in the construction of division and conflict. I have developed what I choose to call a problem posing1 visual arts pedagogy that serves to expose and undermine the conditions that sustain such divisions. My work has uncovered an implicit interconnectivity among art practices, critical pedagogy and the concepts and practices of conflict transformation. This combination coupled with my experience in the field of peace building, has enabled me to develop a unique pedagogical form that is responsive to the context and needs of specific communities. Through the following commentary I posit this pedagogy firmly within the general discourse of peace building. The portfolio presents new knowledge that aims to inform innovative approaches to the role of the visual arts in conflict transformation and ultimately lead toward 1 Problem posing – drawing on Paulo Freire (1970) Pedagogy of the Oppressed: a problem posing pedagogy offers opportunities for learner and teacher to build a relationship based on critical inquiry. ii embedding such processes in the field of peace building and international diplomacy.

Abstract:
Visual Analytics is a multi-disciplinary field that uses interactive visualisations to promote and assist the analytic reasoning and generate insights. Understanding the perceptual and cognitive factors is key to the progress in this field. This research focuses on understanding the benefits of interaction in terms of insight generation Moreover, this investigation explores the compounding effects individual differences have with interaction when analysing data to generate insights. This study investigated the individual differences in two sets; psychometric set measures, and a sensorial preferences multimodal learning style. Interaction was analysed from an information visualisation perspective, exploring the Visual Mapping and View Transformation interaction, by isolating interaction as an independent variable. Moreover, the View Transformation experiment used two different visual representations 2D and 3D. Additionally, the individual differences were analysed using the aptitude-by-treatment interaction (ATI) methodology. The ATI approach enabled the assessment of the performance gains in terms of insight generation according to pre-defined set levels of individual differences measures. This thesis confirms the benefits of interaction in generating more insights and increasing their accuracy, whilst facilitating the generation of insights requiring lower mental effort. Further, the results show significant conjoint effects between interaction and individual differences. Furthermore this research revealed a performance difference between 2D and 3D visual representation in the serious game problem solving context. Overall, this thesis provides tangible proof that both visual mapping and view transformation interaction are beneficial to visual analytics in generating insights. Strengthening the view that interaction with the problem-set improves understanding, and the number of insights gleaned into the problem and that more research into the use of individual differences, as a performance predictor in Visual Analytics is beneficial.

Abstract:

Much language planning and policy in recent years in South Africa tends to overlook linguistic situations and practices, and focuses on notions of top-down language policy and implementation. This does not fit easily with the current multilingualism dynamics of late post-modern societies, which are increasingly characterized by a culture of consumerism and politics of aspiration. Taking its point of departure from a critical analysis of linguistic practices, in the form of visual literacies (billboards) in a township in South Africa, this thesis aims to draw forth alternative approaches that focus on the notion of sociolinguistic consumption, politics of aspiration and stylization of self, as a means of addressing the linguistic situation, and highlighting implications for language planning and multilingualism.

Abstract:
Both the Visual Studies classroom, and the subject of Visual Studies itself, may open possibilities for solving problems in creative, challenging ways, that in other contexts might be regarded as disruptive. My study deals with transgressive behaviour in Visual Studies lessons, and how such behaviour is understood and received by teachers. It grows out of my own experience of incomprehension and unease around surprising work produced by students in my own Visual Studies workshops, and my hypothesis that behaviour like this is a form of resistance to control. I carry out a focus group interview with children that I know from workshops that I have been holding every Saturday for two years, using visual elicitation to encourage them to talk about Visual Studies lessons in general. My intention with the interview is to develop insights into why children do things that are different from their teacher’s expectations, with the aim of increasing my understanding of the work that children do in Visual Studies lessons, benefitting my own teaching practice, and being useful to colleagues. Ideas from other studies that have to do with imaginative play and creativity help me to conceive of children’s unexpected behaviour less as of a reaction against rules and authority, and more as a response to the possibilities of a Visual Studies workshop. The visual component of my study, where I install a ping-pong table in Konstfack’s Vita Havet gallery, can be regarded as a correlative to the written part. Through placing signs on the table, and changing how it is arranged, I draw attention to the way that it seems to be regarded differently from other objects placed in public spaces around Konstfack. The work is implicitly concerned with decisions about which objects, behaviours and people are regarded as acceptable in which spaces. As in the written study, through focussing on elements that don’t seem to fit in, my intention is to better understand the system as a whole.

Bloom, Phillip Emmanual. "Descent of the Deities: The Water-Land Retreat and the Transformation of the Visual Culture of Song-Dynasty (960-1279) Buddhism." Thesis, Harvard University, 2013. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:10948.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation identifies a paradox at the heart of the visual culture of Song-dynasty (960-1279) Buddhism. On the one hand, as the celestial pantheon expanded, it was conceptualized in ever more bureaucratic ways, mirroring the growth of the terrestrial government itself. On the other hand, the boundary separating that supramundane realm from the human world became decidedly more permeable; ghosts and deities became an omnipresent part of daily life. How to treat these two contradictory phenomena--one pointing to rational orderliness, the other pointing to unpredictable unruliness--posed a distinct problem for Song visual artists, spurring the development of new strategies of pictorial representation and forcing reflection upon the nature of representation itself. Chinese Buddhist art was never to be the same again. I argue that the key to understanding these new forms of art lies in the Water-Land Retreat (Shuilu zhai), a massive, icon-filled ritual of decidedly cosmic pretensions. The patterns of practice and strategies of visual representation associated with this ritual constitute a system that radically broke with earlier Chinese tradition. Practitioners of the liturgy created an open ritual syntax that allowed it to take on myriad forms in accordance with its sponsors’ needs, while also allowing it to absorb deities and practices from non-Buddhist traditions. This dissertation examines these phenomena in three parts. Part 1 excavates the social place, methods of practice, and visual profile of the Water-Land Retreat in and around the Song. Relying extensively on paintings from the Jiangnan region, cliff carvings from Sichuan, and numerous liturgical manuscripts, I argue that image and practice are inextricably bound in this ritual. Part 2 focuses on the motif of the cloud in Water-Land-related images and texts. Through an examination of images of cloud-borne descending deities, I contend that this nebulous motif became the locus for reflection on the mediational nature of representation. Finally, Part 3 addresses the bureaucratization of ritual practice and pictorial production in Song Buddhism. I argue that practitioners of the Water-Land Retreat simultaneously embraced and transcended a bureaucratic idiom drawn from Daoism and contemporary government to create a new Buddhist vision of the cosmos.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the art of Babylonia, Iran and Bactria after the Macedonian conquest, from c.330 to c.100 BC, in light of current developments in archaeological theory of cultural interaction. In order to illustrate the character and scale of these interactions, the thesis presents a discussion of iconographic material ranging from architectural ornament and sculpture to minor arts. Chapters II-IV discuss the material from each site, highlighting regional characteristics and differences between media. Chapters V-VII use three cross-sections to examine cultural interaction visible in material used for different social functions (‘spheres’). The ‘sphere of gods’ discusses religious architectural ornament and iconography, and the implications for our interpretation of cult in Babylonia, Iran and Bactria in this period. The ‘sphere of kings’ considers ruler representation and the physical appearance of ‘royal space’ while the ‘sphere of citizens and subjects’ discusses material made and used by the wider populace. Macedonian rule and the influx of settlers to Babylonia, Iran and Bactria developed networks of exchange, transmission and transformation creating ‘visually multi-lingual’ societies. The adoption of new artistic influences did not replace all existing traditions or necessarily infringe ethnic identities. There was selective adoption and adaptation of iconography, styles and forms to suit the new patrons and contexts. This cultural co-existence included some combinations of features from different artistic traditions into individual compositions, emphasising how visual languages were not closed-off, rigidly defined or static. Patrons were not confined to using the visual language associated with their ethnicity or current location. There was flexibility of use and meaning, which may present a useful model in the study of other areas of cultural interaction in the Hellenistic period.

Abstract:
This master thesis aims to understand whether the connection of visuals and emotions on social media can be utilized by activists to increase awareness of environmental issues. In particular, this thesis discussed if emotional visual content about environmental activism on social media increases recipients' emotional awareness and small-scale activism when embedded in visual framing communication. The work is based on theories like affective visual framing, affective intensity, stickiness and grab, which define the dynamics of emotions online and the merits that come with it, when used for strategic communication. In combination with visual communication on social media and the emotional impact of visuals, environmental imagery develops power for social transformation. Analyzing the organization Greenpeace and the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation for their emotional strategic communication on Instagram, the research uses mixed-methods to gather data about the reception of emotional visuals. A questionnaire collects data about broad responses to images and seven in-depth interviews focus on deeper motivations and opinions behind the emotional reaction. The research reveals that first of all emotions are generated by emotionally framed visual contents. These emotions also lead to an emotional awareness of environmental issues. Nevertheless, small-scale activism was neither increased by emotional content nor by general emotional awareness. Solely short-term interest in activism could be identified.

Wesner, Simone. "Adaptation and resistance : the impact of German unification on the living and working conditions of visual artists in Saxony and their response to transformation." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2002. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/2357/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the changes in visual artists' living and working conditions and the ways in which visual artists reacted to these changes after German unification. It has sought to explore aspects of the interface between the state, the individual visual artists and the visual artists' community in a society of transformation and comments on the impact of change on the existence of such a relationship. The aims are twofold. First, to contribute to an understanding of visual artists' reactions to the dynamics of change created by changes of their working and living conditions after German unification. A second aim was to analyse the causes of the behaviour of the group of older visual artists. This study of change employed an interdisciplinary approach and combined sociology, psychology, history and cultural policy studies in order to analyse visual artists' responses to the challenge of German unification. Exploration of these themes has been informed by a qualitative empirical study of how visual artists respond to change in the East German region of Saxony. A theoretical framework was developed using grounded theory, which was used to code the following datasets: interviews with 30 visual artists, 10 administrators and 3 group discussions. The theoretical perspective adopted drew on organisational change theory, on sociology of culture and on socialisation theory. In this way it contributes to the relocation of visual artists as key actors in cultural policy research. The results of the research revealed that initial expectations of the swift adaptation of visual artists' to the new living and working conditions were not fulfilled and that visual artists moved between adaptation and resistance. Although the administrative transformation of the state was completed by 1998, the process of change is ongoing for the visual artists. Unification left the visual artists in a state of shock, a state they have been recovering from since 1990. The findings lead to development of the Visual Artists Adaptation Model, which as a unique approach combines the collective cultural shock model and human change role model with the responses of visual artists to German unification. It analyses the process of change experienced by visual artists in five stages (1. euphoria, 2. shock and disconfirmation, 3 adaptation, 4. stabilisation, 5. normalisation). In an ideal case scenario, the result of adaptation should be a career re-start, which can be achieved once visual artists manage to overcome cultural shock. I argue that adaptation is delayed when learning anxiety conflicts with survival anxiety and when a psychologically safe situation fails to be provided. This proved to be the case for the group of older visual artists. It is concluded that values, developed as part of a socialist socialisation, acted as key obstacles to adaptation to the capitalist system. These values and norms evolved in different ways over years due to successful indoctrination with Marxist-Leninist ideology.

Abstract:
In this thesis, we develop a supervised object recognition method using new global image descriptors inspired by the model of the human primary visual cortex V1. Mathematically speaking, the latter is modeled as the semi-discrete roto-translation group SE (2,N)=R² x ZN semi-direct product between R² and ZN. Therefore, our technique is based on generalized and rotational Fourier descriptors defined in SE (2,N) , and which are invariant to natural geometric transformations (translations, and rotations). Furthermore, we show that such Fourier descriptors are weakly complete, in the sense that they allow to distinguish over an open and dense set of compactly supported functions in L² (SE(2,N)) , hence between real-world images. These descriptors are later used in order to feed a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier for object recognition purposes. We have conducted a series of experiments aiming both at evaluating and comparing the performances of our method against existing both local - and global - descriptor based state of the art techniques, using the RL, the CVL, and the ORL face databases, and the COIL-100 image database (containing various types of objects). The obtained results have demonstrated that our approach was able to compete with many existing state of the art object recognition techniques, and to outperform many others. These results have also shown that our method is robust to noise. Finally, we have applied the proposed method on vessels recognition in the framework of maritime surveillance

Abstract:
In a world where archive footage melts with the “hashtag-city”, this thesis reports on the recent metamorphosis of a Lisbon square named Intendente. This urban plot historically crossed by a long commercial thoroughfare has always sheltered a cosmopolitan population. Adding interlope bars to clandestine activities, the Intendente square has become the stigma arena of the town center. Until the Mayor launched, between 2011 and 2014, a wide scale urban project aiming to its transformation into an attractive neighborhood of the capital city. The locals were warned from the beginning: the Mayor said he wanted to “change the neighborhood’s image” and, indeed, from the start to the end of the project, Intendente’s landscape undoubtedly toggles from a state of invisibility to hypervisibility. Recognizing the growing importance of the faire ville visual dimension, we restore the complexity of this process to a central question: which roles do images play in modern urban transformation ? From city images to urban imaginaries, our narrative thus follows, in a narrative present, the time line of Intendente’s history. Composing the portrait of a place in time, this thesis appears under the form of a “chronotopy”, whose chronological path comprehends the sum and the anachronysm of multiple events. Within a frame that continuously overlaps images and texts, this thesis displays the anthropological reflection of a visual culture in urban transformation

Abstract:
The semantic gap problem has been a major focus of research in the development of content-based image retrieval (CBIR) systems. In this context, the most promising research focus primarily on the inference of continuous feature weights and feature selection. However, the traditional processes of continuous feature weighting are computationally expensive and feature selection is equivalent to a binary weighting. Aiming at alleviating the semantic gap problem, this master dissertation proposes two methods for the transformation of metric feature spaces based on the inference of transformation functions using Genetic Algorithms. The WF method infers weighting functions and the TF method infers transformation functions for the features. Compared to the existing methods, both proposed methods provide a drastic searching space reduction by limiting the search to the choice of an ordered set of transformation functions. Visual analysis of the transformed space and precision. vs. recall graphics confirm that both TF and WF outperform the traditional feature eighting methods. Additionally, we found that TF method significantly outperforms WF regarding the query similarity accuracy by performing non linear feature space transformation, as found in the visual analysis.

Abstract:
of Liminal Space and Transformation” The thesis focuses upon the Threshold Concept theoretical framework and Transformative Theory as a means to consider the visual art making process. Constructs within the threshold literature that are highly relevant begins with the navigation of liminal space and interrelationships between the affective and cognitive dimensions. The study identifies the dialogic element of threshold concepts, as well as semiotic theory as integral to the visual arts and the navigation of liminal space and resulting transformations. The threshold concept theoretical framework and semiotic theory informs the epistemic nature of the art making process and the understanding of art making as a vehicle for navigating the liminal space. The thesis employs qualitative methods as a form of participant interviewing and action research that represent case studies of Rene, Aline and Jayden. The data collection uses the organic deadlines and assessment procedures of the IB visual art curriculum. Therefore, the data consists of art portfolios, written statements and sketchbook excerpts, as well as two interviews with each participant. One interview is part of the IB assessment and the second takes place after the IB assessments are over. Thematic analysis of the interviews provides larger themes and sub-themes by employing a process of segmenting. I have conceptualised larger themes and sub-themes to delve more deeply into the experiences of the young women and their respective liminal journey. The thesis documents the liminal journey of these young women as a basis for reflection upon the art making process. A point of departure for this research is to challenge the assumption that all forms of art education result in the development of critical thinking and self-expression. Many art learning environments are as prescribed and restrictive as any academic class, reducing art to exercises in technical skill. The Threshold Concept framework and the case studies documenting the liminal journey highlight important considerations for the role of art education in schools and the domain of education.

Park, Man Ki. "The Strange Case of the Animated Jekyll and the Online Hyde : a documentary study of Korean youth culture and identity." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2015. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/19665.

Abstract:
Robert Louis Stevenson s The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) is the starting point for my practice-led research project. Stevenson's Victorian novella enables me to identify core themes which are pertinent to a discussion of the construction of contemporary identities in Korean youth culture. These identities are exemplified in the creation of avatars the virtual characters of animated online games such as massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs). My animation practice is developed by addressing how Jekyll and Hyde provides useful critical and creative tools, such as gothic imagery and detective thrillers, for looking at the double . This concept is used to investigate the case of a young Korean boy, addicted to online gaming, who committed violent acts. My animated drama-documentary draws on research into the real and virtual Korean worlds and employs a visual ethnographic methodology to test my research question: in what ways can the construction of 'identity' (based on concepts drawn from 'Jekyll and Hyde') be identified in contemporary 'virtual' media (i.e. 'MMORPGs'/the 'animated' documentary), and how does this facilitate an address of the specific case of 'Korea' and 'Korean-ness'? The thesis is structured into five chapters: The Idea of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Theorising Identities in a Korean Context, Theorising Visual Ethnography, Theorising Animated Drama-Documentary, and A Film Practice as Animated Drama-Documentary in Visual Ethnography. Evidence of the research process and findings is located in a series of appendices. Theories about the construction of identity are discussed from three different perspectives: sociology, psychoanalysis and bio-culturalism. In my film practice, I look for the connection between the anxious self and Korean social issues, such as modernisation and the 1997 IMF economic crisis, to account for Korean youth s identity formation through online gaming. My research shows that many South Korean MMORPG users construct identity within contemporary virtual media and that this contributes to a very complex Korean-ness amongst Korean youth. Online gaming has both positive and negative consequences. Immersion in the virtual world can lead to addiction and to the violence which is at the core of my film narrative. It can also result in close online friendships, offering kinship not available in many broken families, or families inhibited in their communication by social roles and expectations, or the effect of economic failure and loss. My practice criticises young Korean people's narrow and limited social environment and proves that they desire liberal expression and decision-making for themselves, which can be experienced through the embodiment of animated avatars in MMORPGs. Hence, the online Hyde , though assumed to be a negative or destructive force, is actually a vehicle for varied and numerous social identities for youth culture preferable to those available in real Korean society. The research mounts a critique of the meaning of the online Hyde , not as a misrepresentative and negative representation of Korean-ness, but as a revelation of its contemporary meaning which can be articulated though animation, a tool which has applications within visual ethnography.

Abstract:
This thesis gives an experiential account of notions of the home in contemporary rural China. Based on a year of fieldwork in a mountain village in rural Shanxi Province, the thesis explores everyday and ritual practices to investigate how people make themselves at home under conditions of political economic transformation. Villagers accommodate and resist conflicts of interest by negotiating boundaries of insiders and outsiders through the home. Differences of gender and generation come to the fore as people compromise between aspiration and pragmatism within the home under conditions of resurgent market competition. The theoretical concern of the thesis lies in connecting wider social processes to personal life projects through the intimate sphere of the home. The rhythm of the seasons patterns the thesis into spring, summer, autumn and winter chapters, as the seasons were pivotal in ordering people’s everyday practices and ritual activities within a shared social and ecological environment. The opening chapter on the autumn harvest coincided with my arrival in the village. The chapter explores how labour, and particularly women’s labour, transforms the earth into affective belonging, and how women negotiate conflicts over food consumption between the agricultural and market economy. The winter chapter parallels tales of personal life history with wider kinship networks across various generations, while simultaneously tracing bodily pathways from the domain of the hot stove in the home to the cold grave in the fields. The next chapter begins with the celebratory periods of springtime during the New Year Festival, a time of ritual renewal in the home when women partook in a local domestic ritual of propitiating the little spirits of the house. At Qingming Festival villagers’ practices of worshipping the ancestors in the fields were juxtaposed with a tour company’s staging of an elaborate ritual revival of star worship in the village. Conflicting aspirations over the future of the past thereby tore fissures into the emerging ritual terrain between outside spectacle and inside convergence. The last ethnographic chapter looks at the summer as a time for regenerating life, particularly through marriage and children. Reciprocal caring cycles between different generations of women are central to balancing domestic and occupational aspirations in negotiation with the local implementation of the family planning policy. House-based rituals at children’s birthday parties and bridal farewell ceremonies formally celebrate the roles of matrilateral relatives.

Abstract:
High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging techniques potentially allow for the capture and storage of the full information of light in a scene. However, common display devices are limited in terms of their contrast and brightness capabilities, thus HDR images must be tone mapped before presentation on a display device to ensure that the original appearance of the scene is reproduced. In this thesis, we take two approaches to the tone mapping problem. First, we develop a general framework for improving any tone mapped image by reducing the distance with the corresponding HDR image in terms of a non-local perceptual metric. The distance is minimized by means of a gradient descent algorithm. Second, we develop a real-time Tone Mapping Operator (TMO) that is well suited to the statistics of natural scenes, and is in keeping with new psychophysical findings and neurophysical data. We determine the adequate non-linear adjustments needed for our tone mapping results to look best in different viewing conditions through a psychophysical experiment and develop an automatic method that can predict the experimental data. Our TMO produces results that look natural, without any spatio-temporal artifacts. User preference tests show that our method outperforms state of the art approaches. The TMO is fast and could be implemented on camera hardware. It can be used for on-set monitoring of HDR cameras on regular displays, as a substitute for gamma correction, and as a way of providing the colorist with content that is both natural looking and has a crisp and clear appearance.

Abstract:
The present research objective is to verify the existence of the Transformation of the Performer’s Appearance in live spectacles. The transformation is understood as a process resulting from the continuous interchange between scene light and visual characterization of the performer (consisting of costumes, makeup, hairstyle and accessories). Spectacles from the XX century are discussed, with special attention to theatre and dance. Initially, secondary objectives were defined in order to contribute to the thesis final result. These goals helped to determine some central aspects of the thesis, and to complement knowledge related to the theme. Therefore, the research aims: to make a literature review and understand the study subjects; to acknowledge process and technologies of the scenic design (light, visual characterization, scenario) through declaration of experts of the area; to verify differences and similarities of scenic design between eastern and western cultures; to verify scenic design evolution in the time rage defined; to define method to analyze the available material. Thus, from the thoughts developed during the knowledge formation (structured in three steps), we present the following research question: Could the interchange between the scenic light and the visual characterization of the performer result in a transformation of the performer’s visual appearance to the public? In other words, this study is a theoretical research with empirical approach. Some examples of the subject of study are qualitatively analyzed using the Content Analysis method. A content analysis methodology was used as a way of exploring images and text documents. The results from these analyses are registered at the end of the three parts (who are called here Route Methodological) of the thesis: literature review; empirical analysis – part one; empirical analysis – part two. The first empirical analysis contextualises the subject; it is composed of examples of experimentation of visual transformations in spectacles, and testimonials from professional artists of scenic design. The second empirical analysis is the central focus of the study. It investigates the Transformation of the Performer’s Visual Appearance in the trajectory and work of eight western artist of the XX century (who are called here Investigators Artists). The investigated artists are: Adolphe Appia, Edward Gordon Craig, Loïe Fuller, Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo, Josef Svoboda, Ariane Mnouchkine, Robert Wilson and Pina Bausch. The conclusion of the research indicates the existence of the Transformation of the Performer’s Visual Appearance. The transformation occurs in a predetermined short range of time, and is composed of a sequence of images in continuous transformation. This process starts in the initial appearance of the performer and ends with this appearance modified. The resulting visual characterisation of the performer, which happens in real time, may be permanent until the end of the spectacle or might come back to the original appearance. The Transformation of the Performer’s Visual Appearance, led by the light and the visual characterisation of the performer, was verified in this research mostly in the work developed by the scenic artists Loïe Fuller e Robert Wilson. The conclusion inferred in the present research is that visual changes in the performer are and have always been part of the scenic design of live spectacles during the time range studied. Nonetheless, the visual transformation of the performer has not always been a visual resource taking into account in the scenic design and plastic production. This study demonstrates that the visual appearance of the performer, influenced by the interchange between light and visual characterization, can be a live scenic element being active part of the dramatic proposal and work’s aesthetics.

This work presents a cooperative navigation systemof a humanoid robot and a wheeled robot using visual information, aiming to navigate the non-instrumented humanoid robot using information obtained from the instrumented wheeled robot. Despite the humanoid not having sensors to its navigation, it can be remotely controlled by infra-red signals. Thus, the wheeled robot can control the humanoid positioning itself behind him and, through visual information, find it and navigate it. The location of the wheeled robot is obtained merging information from odometers and from landmarks detection, using the Extended Kalman Filter. The marks are visually detected, and their features are extracted by image processing. Parameters obtained by image processing are directly used in the Extended Kalman Filter. Thus, while the wheeled robot locates and navigates the humanoid, it also simultaneously calculates its own location and maps the environment (SLAM). The navigation is done through heuristic algorithms based on errors between the actual and desired pose for each robot. The main contribution of this work was the implementation of a cooperative navigation system for two robots based on visual information, which can be extended to other robotic applications, as the ability to control robots without interfering on its hardware, or attaching communication devices

Abstract:

This dissertation considers packet-switched wireless networks for transmission of variable-rate layered hybrid video streams. Target applications are video streaming and broadcasting services. The work can be divided into two main parts.

In the first part, a novel quality-scalable scheme based on coefficient refinement and encoder quality constraints is developed as a possible extension to the video coding standard H.264. After a technical introduction to the coding tools of H.264 with the main focus on error resilience features, various quality scalability schemes in previous research are reviewed. Based on this discussion, an encoder decoder framework is designed for an arbitrary number of quality layers, hereby also enabling region-of-interest coding. After that, the performance of the new system is exhaustively tested, showing that the bit rate increase typically encountered with scalable hybrid coding schemes is, for certain coding parameters, only small to moderate. The double- and triple-layer constellations of the framework are shown to perform superior to other systems.

The second part considers layered code streams as generated by the scheme of the first part. Various error propagation issues in hybrid streams are discussed, which leads to the definition of a decoder quality constraint and a segmentation of the code stream to transmit. A packetization scheme based on successive source rate consumption is drafted, followed by the formulation of the channel code rate optimization problem for an optimum assignment of available codes to the channel packets. Proper MSE-based error metrics are derived, incorporating the properties of the source signal, a terminate-on-error decoding strategy, error concealment, inter-packet dependencies, and the channel conditions. The Viterbi algorithm is presented as a low-complexity solution to the optimization problem, showing a great adaptivity of the joint source channel coding scheme to the channel conditions. An almost constant image qualiity is achieved, also in mismatch situations, while the overall channel code rate decreases only as little as necessary as the channel quality deteriorates. It is further shown that the variance of code distributions is only small, and that the codes are assigned irregularly to all channel packets.

A double-layer constellation of the framework clearly outperforms other schemes with a substantial margin.

Abstract:
Entropy is a process of gradual decline as a system loses the strength to maintain itself. It begins with disorder and results in complete transformation. As a multi-cultural American, it has been my experience that the maintenance of my Iranian heritage parallels this concept. A method of visual communication that incorporates entropy is able to express notions of impermanence, disorder and transformation. This project is focused on employing entropy in the process of design and image making by using the transformation of my cultural identity as primary content.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze how the devil figure is used as a visual metaphor for depression in the animated short film How Have You Been? (2020) made by Polly Nor and Adam Baker. This with the goal to create a wider understanding about how visual metaphor can be used in the field of visual communication to portray emotions. The study is carried out with the help of a semiotic analysis as well as a metaphor analysis with a theoretical basis in semiotics and metaphor theory. The thesis resulted in knowledge about how the visual metaphor is enhanced through the personification of depression and a strong relationship between the protagonist and the antagonist. The transformation of the devil figure is also of great importance for how the visual metaphor is interpreted. Furthermore, it became clear that the filmmakers use symbols and non-verbal communication to enhance the visual metaphor.

Searching for the understanding of the relationship between the environment of a planned shopping center in the city of Recife, and the shopping experience of the visually impaired, this thesis was structured, emphasizing the stimuli present in such an environment. Thus, it seeks to also understanding the interpretation of the shopping experience of the people with disabilities visual perception through the elements of the physical and social environment. The choice of subject was motivated by the need for transformative research, covering topics and social actors little studied, as is the case of the visually impaired, as active consumers, but outside of the store, only in common a shopping environment, order to present a perspective of inclusion and pre-purchase affordability. Therefore, there were 12 episodic interviews and semi structured interviews with members of theBlind Pernambuco Institute and APEC in the city of Recife. There was also a participant observation through a walk at the mall, preceded by a field experience lived by the researcher, provided visually impaired, blindfolded, which provided an immersion in the reality of informants and environmental conditions. The study has interpretative approach and is characterized by basic descriptive qualitative research, with phenomenological basis, based on social constructivism theory. The data were analyzed according to the discourse analysis technique, the main result the realization that an environment designed with sensory elements not always fits in the reality of the people with disabilities visual. In the context studied, the physical elements contained in the retail environment end up away consumers with visual impairments, and determining the behavior of the people, both employees and regulars of the mall. Although the literature presents people as part of the social environment, based on the results, this research includes these, too, also in the physical environment, setting them up as barriers to accessibility. Thus, we propose a more humane posture, so that the retail environment to become inclusive and suitable for the the people with disabilities visual.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to improve our understanding of how elderly people, affected by visual loss late in life, experience and handle such a life-changing process. The thesis is based on a qualitative scientific method, in which six elderly participated in semi-structured interviews, after which thematic content analysis was conducted. The analysis resulted in four overarching themes: Learning, Coping, Independence, and Acceptance. This thesis presents a phenomenological study of the experiences of visually impaired elderly people. It is grounded in the concept of the “life-world” - the world we perceive in living our daily lives, and the theory of Transformative learning. Our research aims to highlight the perspective of the senior him- or herself. The results show that learning processes are individual and related to the participants' respective life-worlds and lived experiences. The conclusions show the importance of adopting a holistic approach adapted to the needs of the individual and providing integrated mental health support alongside the conventional low vision intervention.

Abstract:
Between Figure and Line: Visual Transformations of Cartesian Physics, 1620-1690 is the first sustained examination of the diagrams and illustrations that constituted the seventeenth century's new physics. When René Descartes introduced natural philosophy to the graphic techniques of geometry, mixed mathematics, cartography, and master engravers, subsequent interpreters of the new science were encouraged to respond in kind. But none of their pictures - neither the outlines of barometric tubes employed by Parisian salon impresario Jacques Rohault, nor the still lifes and landscapes into which Leiden university professor Wolferd Senguerd etched Cartesian matter, and certainly not the copies of Descartes's figures with which Jesuit priest Gabriel Daniel refuted the new philosophy - agreed on a single visual idiom for revealing nature's laws. Such pictorial diversity, I argue, marked the natural philosophical figure as a critical, and contested, apparatus for grasping at truth amidst the slow disintegration of Aristotelian certainty.

Full text
Abstract:
The dorsal pathway of macaque visual cortex is involved in the processing of motion signals that are useful for perception and behaviour. This involves multiple stages, with each stage integrating information from its predecessors. Along these stages, motion information is first measured by the primary visual cortex (V1), which sends specialized projections to extrastriate regions such as the middle temporal area (MT). Previous work with plaid stimuli has shown that most V1 neurons respond to the individual components of moving stimuli, while some MT neurons are capable of estimating the global motion of the pattern. The observation of this pattern-selectivity has led to two-stage models, in which MT neurons integrate the outputs of component-selective V1 neurons. In this thesis we first show (Chapter 2) thatthe majority of neurons in the medial temporal area (MST), which receives input from MT, have this pattern-selective property. We also show that increased pattern selectivity in MST is associated with greater prevalence of the mechanisms (i.e. motion opponency and component integration) implemented by two-stage MT models. Thus the relationship between MST and MT is qualitatively similar to that between MT and V1, as repeated application of basic motion mechanisms leads to novel selectivities at each stage along the pathway. The second and third chapters of this thesis use dissociation of spikes and local field potentials (LFPs) through stimulus selectivity and inactivation of spiking output, respectively, to investigate the anatomical source of the LFP. These experiments suggest that the β and γLband of the LFP exhibit properties similar to the presumptive feedforward input to each area while the γH band reflects local spiking output. Together theresults of this thesis suggest a strong link between the sensory tuning of cortical LFPs and afferent inputs, with important implications for the interpretation of the BOLD signal, which has been shown to correlate with the spike-independent component of the LFP. The thesis also has important implications for the design of Brain-Machine Interfaces, which use the LFP response to decode brain function.

Abstract:
Multimodal theory has developed out of social semiotics and can be seen as a response to the rise in the use of new technologies for the creation, distribution and consumption of media texts and the need to find new ways of describing and explaining their role in representation and communication. Its development is historical. It is a response to change over time. The incorporation of the visual into social semiotics marks a key moment in the development of multimodal theory. Visual literacy is discussed in relation to changes in modes of representation and a critique of this concept is provided. This is conducted in relation to how the visual modality has been integrated into social semiotics as a platform for research into multimodal communication more generally. Framing is developed along three main lines of enquiry (semiotic, cognitive and affective) as alternative ways of accounting for some of these shifts in communication and each are presented in the form of case studies. Framing and its close relationship with composition in media texts is discussed and this understanding, one that emphasise proximity as a multimodal principle, is applied to the visual design of content, the realisation of context through the provision visual cues, and later to embodiment and urban space. The three case studies, the application of framing to a range of media texts, the critical judgements made about the role visual in contemporary theory and the application of these concepts to multimodality are presented as part of an intellectual journey.

The purpose of this research was to understand the consumer behavior of visually impaired people in consuming educational services during elementary school, aiming to develop initiatives to mitigate its vulnerability as consumer. The ethnographic research, developed in a NGO, which is engaged in the education of students with visual impairment in João Pessoa /PB, was preceded by a review of literature about the Transformative Consumer Research, the Consumer Vulnerability and the performance of visually impaired people as consumers with emphasis on the consumption of educational services. The data were collected through 17 narrative interviews with elementary school students supported by this institution, six in-depth interviews with managers and teachers of the NGO Lar, five interviews with relatives of these students, and seven months of participant observation inside the institution. The results of the research indicate that the schoolmates, teachers, school managers and NGOs that work with visually impaired people interfere directly in the consumption behavior of the subjects, being able to contribute or inhibit the subjective well-being of the students. In addition, the powerlessness before unfair taxes, the lack of open positions in public or private schools and the lack of adequate teaching materials are characteristics of the investigated context that accentuate the vulnerability state of respondents. Starting the debate in Marketing of educational services in elementary school and developing this research on the fundamentals of Transformative Consumer Research can be considered theoretical contributions of this study, which also has practical contributions to civil society organizations from Joao Pessoa.

Abstract:
This bachelors thesis presents a vision based control system for the quadrotor aerial vehicle,Crazy ie 2.0, developed by Bitcraze AB. The main goal of this thesis is to design andimplement an o-board control system based on visual input, in order to control the positionand orientation of the vehicle with respect to a single ducial marker. By integrating a cameraand wireless video transmitter onto the MAV platform, we are able to achieve autonomousnavigation and landing in relatively close proximity to the dedicated target location. The control system was developed in the programming language Python and all processing ofthe vision-data take place on an o-board computer. This thesis describes the methods usedfor developing and implementing the control system and a number of experiments have beencarried out in order to determine the performance of the overall vision control system. Withthe proposed method of using ducial markers for calculating the control demands for thequadrotor, we are able to achieve autonomous targeted landing within a radius of 10centimetres away from the target location.
Abstract:
Arts organisations in receipt of public funding should seek to understand the impact of their work, for a variety of reasons. Contemporary outcome-based arts evaluation practice dichotomises impact as intrinsic or instrumental with the latter perspective defining what counts. However, a widely held belief in the transformative power of the arts is apparent in both arts policy and practice. It therefore follows that if evaluation is fundamentally about discerning value then arts evaluation should recognise transformation as core. I contend that visually-based research methods offer alternative ways of seeing and knowing from the methods that dominate arts evaluation practice. As a result, I consider how these methods might help to identify what is transformative within the context of a community arts project. To explore how evaluation can better reflect the transformative power of the arts, I ask three research questions. Firstly, can participants’ experience be theorised and understood as transformative arts-based learning? Secondly, to what extent can participants’ experience of a community arts project be understood through visually-based research methods? Thirdly, what are the implications for existing practices of arts evaluation? I explore these questions in relation to a single participatory arts project. The Happy Lands, funded (primarily) by Creative Scotland, brought together communities across Fife with a professional film crew to create a feature length film based on local stories of mining culture. Employing visual ethnography my research methods included image-elicited interviews with 19 participants over a 20 month period, participant observation during the making of the film, and documentary research. The theoretical contribution I make extends Morgan’s (2010) conception of the transformative potential of travel to the transformative power of the arts, which I define in terms of inspiration, interconnection and insight. I propose a conceptual framework that views the experience of ‘sameness’ (interconnection) and ‘Otherness’ (inspiration) as conducive to the possibility of voice (insight). The interaction of self, other and artwork in the context of the participatory (community) arts project leads to the creation of shared identity (identities) and a sense of belonging manifest in the symbolic status of objects and behaviour (‘spirit of place’) associated with the arts project. Visual research methods, combining subjective meaning-making and objective (representational) qualities, offer opportunities to understand and (re)present participants’ experience. I advance a methodological contribution that suggests image elicitation offers an epistemologically appropriate approach to understanding participant experiences of an inherently visual project. The identification of sense of place and spirit of place can be viewed as indicative of a transformative environment. I contend that the creation of an outcome acknowledging the transformative environment of the arts project would respond to the needs of government but also the beliefs of arts educators effectively redressing the balance of instrumental versus intrinsic worth. Moreover, the subjective and objective possibilities afforded by visually-based research methods would enable the latter to speak creatively, in language(s) reflecting their values. As a result my findings are offered as one possible version of a humanities-inspired approach to arts evaluation (Belfiore and Bennett, 2010b).

Abstract:
My research analyzes the mural paintings realized in the villages of Makwacha (Democratic Republic of Congo), Kakyelo (DRC) and Mudenda (Zambia). These mural paintings, while displaying apparently heterogeneous aesthetics, show similar production process (a mostly female collective dynamic, a similar use of clay and organic mixture as painting materials) that suggest their link to the former Lamba tradition called kushingula. Over the last 50 years, great economic and political changes have occured in Zambia and Democratic Republic of Congo. How do these mural paintings practices relate to each other ? What social status do have these paintings nowadays? Who does realize them and for which reasons? What kind of narratives do they elaborate? In order to understand what mirror these practices, I investigate on the inhabitants' motivations and sources of inspiration and the singular histories of each village, connecting individuals' initiatives and influences with village economic issues and structural organization. Indeed, along with the inhabitants, these mural painting practices involve a wide range of actors (NGO, tourists, journalists, artists, etc.) intertwinning different scales, divergent interests and heclectic imaginaries which question how cultural values and signs constantly (re)emerged from heterogenous agencies and how it circulates through individuals and groups

Abstract:
Recently, the Cais Mauá, ancient port in the city of Porto Alegre, had a revitalization project approved in the multiple administrative instances of the state bureaucracy and it is scheduled to be implemented in 2017. I intend to demonstrate in the course of this work that the idea of a "Reestablishment of a relation of the inhabitants of the city with the port", pointed out by the enterprise responsible for the revitalization, is not consensual. It brings together innumerable political contradictions that I sought to accompany ethnographically through consensual contact with urban activism collectives. Performing an anthropology of the processes of contradiction that are related to sociohistorical, landscape and economic aspects, I propose to demonstrate how urban transformations in the city, specifically those related to the port area, are linked to a political memory. Through the narratives of my interlocutors and research in the collection, I realized that the (re) qualification projects for the Cais Mauá are as historic as their resistance. With the decline of port activities in the 1980s, activists, policy makers and urban planners have dreamed differentiated developments for the region. In this sense, the resistance to the revitalization of the Cais Mauá emerges not only as the establishment of alternative plans, projects and proposals, but as a confrontation of the city models in the 21st century.
