Abstract:
‘Digital Democracy’ and ‘digital government’ are relatively new concepts posing challenges for governments, journalists, political analysts and political scientists. Written from a political science perspective, this article provides an overview of selected Pacific Island government efforts on the web and assesses the contribution this makes to political education, on one level, and building egalitarian democracies on another level. Providing a brief survey of internet developments in the area of government within 12 selected Pacific Island countries, the argument is made that, while any additional education in the broad area of politics is welcome, there are still challenges that exist and room for progress. Given current technological capabilities around the region, more ‘traditional’ forms of media still have a vital role to play.

Abstract:
The Pacific island region comprises a large and ecologically diverse area of the Earth, but is fragile and highly sensitive to environmental change. On some islands 80% or more of the species are endemic. These species are particularly vulnerable due to their geographic and ecological isolation. It is an area where local cultures conflict with Western development, leading to a myriad of environmental and social problems. Impacts affecting the Pacific islands include international mining, rising sea levels, land degradation, logging, toxic waste contamination of land and ocean, and contamination from nuclear testing. The extent of these problems has yet to gain international attention. Low education and communication standards in the region mean that many of the local people are not aware of environmental problems. Island governments have little political will to legislate to protect the environment. An exception is the Sustainable Development Bill that has been drafted recently in Fiji.

Abstract:
New Zealand International (RNZI) broadcasts from New Zealand into the South Pacific and is relayed to South Pacific listeners by their various national news services. In 2006, American academic Andrew M. Clark characterised the role of RNZI as ‘providing a service for the people of the South Pacific’ that also provided ‘an important public diplomacy tool for the New Zealand government’ (Clark, 2006). A decade on, this article evaluates the ongoing use and utility of RNZI as a taxpayer-funded voice of and from New Zealand, as a service for the diverse peoples of the South Pacific and as a tool of New Zealand’s transnational diplomatic efforts. RNZI is still a key source of local and regional information and connection for the distinct cultures and nations of the vast South Pacific area, whose peoples have strong links to New Zealand through historical ties and contemporary diasporas living in the country. But, RNZI now faces mounting financial pressure, a government swinging between indifferent and hostile to public broadcasting and questions of legitimacy and reach in the ‘digital age’. With RNZI under pressure in 2016, key questions arise about its present and future. What is RNZI doing well and not so well? What role should New Zealand’s domestic and international politics play in the organisation and its outputs? And how might its importance and impact be measured and understood in such a culturally and geographically diverse region as the South Pacific? Using a variety of sources, including documents released to the author under the New Zealand Official Information Act, this article explores the role of RNZI in the contemporary New Zealand and South Pacific media environments.

Abstract:
Abstract It is recognised that Indigenous Māori and Pacific Peoples are affected disproportionately by Acute Rheumatic Fever (ARF) and Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD). Rates of ARF and RHD in New Zealand and the Pacific Region are of concern. Appropriate community engagement and knowledge translation efforts that support dissemination of research work and findings of relevance to Pacific populations, are of importance for effective dialogue. Efforts to communicate scientific research work and engage appropriately with Pacific communities and audiences have been limited, and require cultural considerations to ensure communication and interactions are culturally appropriate, clear and meaningful. The purpose of this work was to facilitate discussion between researchers and Pacific communities, regarding ARF and RHD Penicillin related research works of direct relevance and importance to Pacific communities in the Wellington area. Led by a Pacific Biomedical Scientist and supported by University Pacific staff and Medical students, a Pacific Fono (gathering) outreach event in the Hutt Valley was held on the 24th July, 2018. Scientific information and research work with immunological components related to ARF and RHD were presented, followed by a question answer session. Members of the Pacific community that attended represented different Pacific population groups with written and verbal feedback indicating the event had been informative and was enjoyed by those in attendance. This scientific knowledge translation and science communication event demonstrated appropriate engagement had been achieved to support dialogue between researchers and the Pacific community, regarding ARF and RHD Penicillin related research efforts.

In order to improve the effect of diversified visual communication, this paper combines computer digital technology to design a multidimensional visual communication system. In order to improve lighting performance, parts of the surface of the secondary processing visually conveyed image have been processed with different diffusing materials, and the effects have been compared in simulations. There are two types of simulations: external simulation and internal simulation. Moreover, the cutting method based on the shape of the lighting area can design a rectangular lighting area, and the diffusing material can improve the lighting performance to a certain extent. In addition to this, according to the shape of the set target plane, a cut visual communication image is obtained. Through multiple simulation experiments, this paper verifies that the diversified visual communication design system based on computer digital technology can effectively improve the visual communication effect.

Abstract:
Pacific Island communities are increasingly experiencing the impacts of climate change. Inaccessibility to relevant information about contemporary climate change adaptation strategies at the community level presents challenges. At the same time, indigenous strategies to adapt to climate changes have been overlooked in both local and global climate change debates. This article discusses a project undertaken with a community on Andra Island, Manus Province, Papua New Guinea. Climate change impacts and adaptation strategies were explored through photo essays developed by community members, engaging in approaches of visual participatory action research and indigenous research approaches. The collaboration with the Andra Island community created a space for reflective dialogue about challenges posed by climate change as well as how photo essays can be used to promote Indigenous Knowledge (IK) as a viable capital for community-based adaptation (CBA). Within this context, this article demonstrates how climate change is both a natural and cultural process of change which poses socio-economic challenges. These challenges can compel people to engage in unsustainable practices that might exacerbate natural climate change impacts. The article highlights that building community capacity in participatory media can be an important tool to forge collective synergy, dialogue and ownership in local climate change initiatives. In particular, the authors demonstrate how participatory media can be harnessed to integrate indigenous knowledge in community-based climate change adaptation.

Abstract:
The cortical visual hierarchy communicates in different oscillatory ranges. While gamma waves influence the feedforward processing, alpha oscillations travel in the feedback direction. Little is known how this oscillatory cortical communication depends on an alternative route that involves the pulvinar nucleus of the thalamus. We investigated whether the oscillatory coupling between the primary visual cortex (area 17) and area 21a depends on the transthalamic pathway involving the pulvinar in cats. To that end, visual evoked responses were recorded in areas 17 and 21a before, during and after inactivation of the pulvinar. Local field potentials were analyzed with Wavelet and Granger causality tools to determine the oscillatory coupling between layers. The results indicate that cortical oscillatory activity was enhanced during pulvinar inactivation, in particular for area 21a. In area 17, alpha band responses were represented in layers II/III. In area 21a, gamma oscillations, except for layer I, were significantly increased, especially in layer IV. Granger causality showed that the pulvinar modulated the oscillatory information between areas 17 and 21a in gamma and alpha bands for the feedforward and feedback processing, respectively. Together, these findings indicate that the pulvinar is involved in the mechanisms underlying oscillatory communication along the visual cortex.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to investigate the role of the visual arts for communicating climate change in the context of the Pacific islands, through the perspectives of artists and climate change practitioners. Design/methodology/approach As part of an “Eco Arts” project carried out in Fiji, semi-structured research interviews were undertaken with artists and climate change practitioners. Findings Participants’ motivations to produce art reflected their personal concerns about, and experiences of, climate change. There was an intention to use art-based approaches to raise awareness and promote action on climate change. The artwork produced drew on metaphors and storytelling to convey future climate impacts and aspects of climate change relevant to Fijian and Pacific communities. Research limitations/implications The study reports the perspectives of participants and discusses the potential uses of arts communication. Conclusions cannot be drawn from the findings regarding the effectiveness of specific artwork or of arts communication as a general approach. Practical implications The research offers suggestions for the inclusion of creative approaches to climate change communication within education and vocational training. A consideration of the perspectives of artist–practitioners has implications for the design and conduct of climate change communication. Social implications The involvement of artist–practitioners in the communication of climate change offers the potential for novel discussions and interpretations of climate change with individuals and within communities, which complement more formal or scientific communication. Originality/value The present study identifies the motivations and objectives of artist–practitioners involved in climate change communication. The authors highlight the role of personal experience and their use of artistic concepts and creative considerations pertinent to the geography and culture of the Pacific region.

Abstract:
With the booming development of the tourism industry, how to bring good benefits to the tourist attractions has become a topic worth pondering. In today’s Internet age, digital communication has become a mainstream way of disseminating art and culture in tourist attractions. This paper takes Changbai Mountain as the research object and realizes the digital dissemination of scene art in Changbai Mountain based on visual sensor image technology. Digital communication not only changes the way of information dissemination but also profoundly affects people’s life, work, and entertainment, changing the way people receive information and the way of thinking, and people have higher requirements for information. Therefore, on the one hand, the communication of Changbai Mountain tourism culture should develop with the development of the times. On the other hand, it should evolve with the evolution of information and constantly change its own form of expression and dissemination to meet the needs of the audience. Finally, the effectiveness of digital dissemination of scene art in Changbai Mountains is reflected through the tourism statistics. The results show that the total tourism revenue of Changbai Mountain in 2019 is the largest, which is 5.61 billion yuan.

Abstract:
Abstract Indigenous Māori and Pacific population groups remain disproportionately affected by Acute Rheumatic Fever (ARF) and Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD). ARF is an autoimmune response to untreated throat (and skin) infection by Group A Streptococcal bacteria. Untreated and repeated episodes of ARF or a severe attack, can lead to permanent cardiac damage known as RHD. High rates of ARF and RHD persist in New Zealand and the Pacific Region. To help raise awareness and support knowledge translation efforts that facilitate dissemination of research work and findings of relevance to Pacific populations, appropriate community engagement is needed. The purpose of this work was to host a Pacific community event to support appropriate engagement and dialogue between researchers and Pacific communities in the southern Wellington Region that would facilitate communication and discussion of ARF/RHD related Penicillin research works and findings. A Pacific community event was held on 30th July, 2018 in Porirua that involved Pacific researchers, University Pacific staff a Medical student and various Pacific groups in the area. Scientific information and research focused on Immunological components related to ARF and RHD were presented by a Pacific Biomedical Scientist with the audience participating in a lengthy discussion session that followed. Feedback demonstrated those involved had engaged appropriately and successfully with the Pacific community groups represented with requests made for similar future events to be held. The response to this Pacific community event highlights the importance of cultural awareness being combined with appropriate scientific and knowledge translation communication activity to support effective dialogue.

Abstract:
The article proposes to consider the COVID-19 global pandemic as new major development for cultural industries and policies and to highlight timely and crucial trends due to the lockdown measures. Thus, it attempts to stimulate the scholarship debate regarding the consequences of the pandemic to the action of global online platforms, as well as to policy and economic aspects of cultural sectors. Taking as case study the audio-visual sector, the article explores whether the US global streaming platforms are the winning players of the lockdown measures and emphasizes the multifaceted strategies developed by US-based platforms in order to strengthen their soft power. Focusing on China and the European Union, the article also argues that the overwhelming action of US-based online platforms triggers the potential emergence of media platform regionalization in the context of COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, it highlights the regulatory challenges and how the new empirical trends are expected to shape the current audio-visual policy framework. The analysis focuses on the period between the beginning of global pandemic in Asia-Pacific in January 2020 and the progressive easing of lockdown measures in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific in July 2020.

Abstract:
This article analyzes the visual depiction of women in the Tribune, the main propaganda newspaper of Japan in the Philippines during the Pacific War. Japanese wartime propaganda painted an image of a productive and cooperative Filipina, respectable and modest like her Japanese counterpart. The analysis reveals three motivations for depicting women in said light: to show a semblance of normalcy despite the turbulent war, to entice women to serve Japan’s aims, and to disprove the Japanese women’s image as subservient wives or entertainers while asserting the connection between the two countries. Analyzing the depiction of women in Japanese propaganda contributes to the understanding of war as a gendered phenomenon. Beyond seeing women as symbols of the private obligations for which men fight or as surrogate objects of sexual desire, the image of women was perceived to be instrumental in showcasing Japan’s New Order.

Abstract:
Although fish are one of the most abundant, conspicuous and structurally important inhabitants of reef systems, the group has remained largely ignored from biodiversity accounts on the Oaxaca reef track. Reef icthyofauna composition at 10 sites between Mazunte and Isla Montosa was gathered through stationary visual census techniques during 19982008. A total of 112 species belonging to 81 genera, 40 families and 11 orders were recorded. Species richness of the study area is higher than similar reef communities in the Mexican Pacific. Thirty species represent new records for the study area, and some discrepancies were found between local (this study) and regional accounts. Our data suggest that species composition in the area is still incomplete.

Abstract:
In order to solve the problems of poor user experience and low human-computer interaction efficiency, this paper designs a 3D image virtual reconstruction system based on visual communication effects. First, the functional framework diagram and hardware structure diagram of the image 3D reconstruction system are given. Then, combined with the basic theory of visual communication design, the characteristics of different elements in the three-dimensional image system and reasonable visual communication forms are analyzed, and design principles are proposed to improve user experience and communication efficiency. After the input image is preprocessed by median filtering, a three-dimensional reconstruction algorithm based on the image sequence is used to perform a three-dimensional reconstruction of the preprocessed image. The performance of the designed system was tested in a comparison form. We optimize the original hardware structure, expand the clock module, and use the chip to improve the data processing efficiency; in the two-dimensional image; we read the main information, through data conversion, display it in three-dimensional form, select the feature area, extract the image feature, calculate the key physical coordinate points, complete the main code compilation, use visual communication technology to feed back the display visual elements to the 3D image, and complete the design of the 3D image virtual reconstruction system. The test results showed that the application of visual communication technology to the virtual reconstruction of 3D images can effectively remove noise and make the edge area of the image clear, which can meet the needs of users compared with the reconstruction results of the original system. Visual C++ and 3DMAX are used as the system design platform, and three-dimensional image visualization and roaming are realized through OpenGL. Experimental results show that the designed system has better reconstruction accuracy and user satisfaction.

Astronomy has been an inherently visual area of science for millenia, yet a majority of its significant discoveries take place in wavelengths beyond human vision. There are many people, including those with low or no vision, who cannot participate fully in such discoveries if visual media is the primary communication mechanism. Numerous efforts have worked to address equity of accessibility to such knowledge sharing, such as through the creation of three-dimensional (3D) printed data sets. This paper describes progress made through technological and programmatic developments in tactile 3D models using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory to improve access to data.

Abstract:
In order to improve the design of ceramic carving products, the author proposes a visual communication, combined with electrochemistry, laser engraving technology, using superpixel imaging technology, carry out laser engraving ceramic reticulation imaging processing, build a binary laser engraving image model, using image edge feature matching method, carry out the edge contour feature detection of the laser engraved ceramic reticulated image, and extract the local information feature quantity of the laser engraved ceramic mesh image. The fuzzy adaptive segmentation method is used for the extracted features and to perform grid area segmentation. The experimental results show that the greater the laser output power, the deeper the engraving depth. As the laser output power increases, the depth of the hole formed by a single pulse laser is enlarged, the etched area formed by the dense hole group also deepens. However, the experiment found that after the laser power is increased to a certain value (17 A), the temperature of the light spot rises sharply, reach the melting point of ceramics, and produce slag that is not easy to remove on the engraved surface, decrease the effective engraving depth. It proves that visual communication, combined with electrochemistry, can effectively realize the design of ceramic carving products.

Abstract:
A new tradition in the use of chatting communication technology with mobile phone (cell phone) is more lively with the use of stickers. Stickers are used as a means to increase the emotion expressions of communication users. Current mobile phone technology, along with the development of high specifications (for visual depiction), is adequate to display complex visual. This prompts a new tradition that accepts even to be a new behavior in modern communication methods. Looking at this phenomenon, it is not impossible for an artist to open up the work area (creative economy) and the creation of new business areas in the visual characters of Indonesian culture. This study used the chatting phenomenon with stickers to introduce the culture of the puppet characters with contemporary approach for young people around the world. The method carried out included the depiction of classification of facial expression emotions and collaboration with the approach of some common sticker visualizations. The result was then put into the classification of semiotic theory combining with simplified visual approach to obtain the appropriate visual characterstics of the puppet. Research also involved visual craft of the purwa puppet as visual character basis for character deformation of the contemporary puppet. Thus, the application of visual stickers can be used by users for communication functions.

There is yet much to learn from journalist Yasmine Ryan’s experience, who died tragically in conflicted circumstances in Istanbul, Turkey, on 30 November 2017 after a stellar career reporting in international conflict zones, from the Pacific to the Middle East. One element is relevant to journalism and communications curriculum. We all live in complex times, and for those who choose to exercise their professional craft in regions of conflict, there is a clear need to develop an awareness of how dangerous situations impact on us. The author of this article argues that professional development in this specific area of journalist safety must be designed to provide the individual an ability to self-assess and determine what kind of help is needed and how to access it before a crisis (whether internal or external) erupts.

Abstract:
Canada’s Wild Salmon Policy requires that biological status of conservation units of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) be assessed regularly in relation to abundance-based benchmarks. Visual survey methods, in which periodic counts of spawning fish are made throughout a season, will likely be used for this purpose because they provide a cost-effective means of monitoring interannual trends in escapement. Trend detection performance for visual survey methods depends mainly upon consistency in (i) the ability of observers to detect fish and (ii) the annual timing of fish presence in the survey area. We developed a Monte Carlo simulation procedure to evaluate the ability of four visual survey methods (peak count, mean count, trapezoidal area-under-the-curve (AUC), and likelihood AUC) to detect 30% declines in coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) escapement over 10 years (i.e., the magnitude of trend that would warrant listing a coho population as threatened using the listing criteria of the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC)) given realistic levels of variability in these two factors. The mean count outperformed all other approaches across a wide range of scenarios about true population dynamics and survey designs, suggesting that a simple mean count method is suitable for monitoring coho escapements in relation to COSEWIC guidelines.

Abstract:
Spatial niche partitioning of marine mammals is thought to be caused by dietary differences. However, due to the difficulty involved with conducting simultaneous marine predator and prey distribution surveys at the same scale, marine mammals have not been studied alongside their prey distribution. To understand the spatial niche overlap between 3 small cetaceans observed in the eastern coastal waters of Hokkaido, Japan (Pacific white-sided dolphin Lagenorhynchus obliquidens, Dall’s porpoise Phocoenoides dalli, and harbor porpoise Phocoena phocoena), and the mechanisms behind the differences in their distributions, visual and hydroacoustic surveys using a quantitative echosounder were concurrently conducted. A clear spatial niche overlap was observed between the Pacific white-sided dolphin and Dall’s porpoise, whereas the spatial overlap was moderate between the harbor porpoise and the other 2 species. In areas where Pacific white-sided dolphins were observed, potential prey was abundant in a shallower layer, at approximately 80-90 m depth. On the other hand, potential prey was more abundant in deeper layers in areas where Dall’s and harbor porpoises were observed. Water depth affected the potential prey abundance at all depth layers (0-300 m), as potential prey were more abundant in areas with a shallower water depth. Additionally, potential prey were more abundant in shallower layers (3-200 m) than in deeper layers (200-300 m), where the maximum water depth was 3000 m. The differences in spatial niche among Pacific white-sided dolphin, Dall’s porpoise, and harbor porpoise might cause their dietary differences, as they are epipelagic feeders, midwater feeders, and both epipelagic and midwater feeders, respectively.

Abstract:
Visual crowdsensing applications using built-in cameras in smartphones have recently attracted researchers’ interest. Making the most out of the limited resources to acquire the most helpful images from the public is a challenge in disaster recovery applications. Proposed solutions should adequately address several constraints, including limited bandwidth, limited energy resources, and interrupted communication links with the command center or server. Furthermore, data redundancy is considered one of the main challenges in visual crowdsensing. In distributed visual crowdsensing systems, photo sharing duplicates and expands the amount of data stored on each sensor node. As a result, if any node can communicate with the server, then more photos of the target region would be available to the server. Methods for recognizing and removing redundant data provide a range of benefits, including decreased transmission costs and energy consumption overall. To handle the interrupted communication with the server and the restricted resources of the sensor nodes, this paper proposes a distributed visual crowdsensing system for full-view area coverage. The target area is divided into virtual sub-regions, each of which is represented by a set of boundary points of interest. Then, based on the criteria for full-view area coverage, a specific data structure theme is developed to represent each photo with a set of features. The geometric context parameters of each photo are utilized to extract the features of each photo based on the full-view area coverage criteria. Finally, data redundancy removal algorithms are implemented based on the proposed clustering scheme to eliminate duplicate photos. As a result, each sensor node may filter redundant photographs in dispersed contexts without requiring high computational complexity, resources, or global awareness of all photos from all sensor nodes inside the target area. Compared to the most recent state-of-the-art, the improvement ratio of the added values of the photos provided by the proposed method is more than 38%. In terms of traffic transfer, the proposed method requires fewer data to be transferred between sensor nodes and between sensor nodes and the command center. The overall reduction in traffic exceeds 20% and the overall savings in energy consumption is more than 25%. It was evident that in the proposed system, sending photos between sensor nodes, as well as between sensor nodes and the command center, consumes less energy than existing approaches due to the considerable amount of photo exchange required. Thus, the proposed technique effectively transfers only the most valuable photos needed.

Abstract:
Abundance estimates of cetaceans in the western Indian Ocean are rare, but important, as many cetacean populations are under threat, especially those in coastal habitats. This study aimed to generate first estimates of abundance for Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus), assessed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, in an area identified by the Marine Mammal Protected Area Task Force as an ‘Important Marine Mammal Area’. Two study sites were surveyed along the east and west coastlines of the Pemba Channel, Tanzania. In west Pemba, between 2014 and 2016 four boat-based visual surveys conducted a total of 2467 km of survey effort sighting a total of 16 groups of T. aduncus. Abundance was estimated using mark-recapture models of photo-identified individuals as 83 animals (CV 7.8%, 95% CI 72-97) in the 1084km2 study area. In the Tanga study area in 2016 two boat-based visual surveys covered 1254 km of effort during which 15 groups of T. aduncus were sighted, resulting in a photo-ID based mark-recapture abundance estimate of 196 (CV 8.9%, 95% CI 165-233) individuals in the 1562 km2 study site. Group encounter rate for this species in Tanga was double that recorded in the Pemba study site. A total of 23% of identified dolphins bore the scars of interactions with fishing gear.

Abstract:
Lately, most studies on sustainable design from the perspective of emotional durability focus on product design, particularly on exploring how do product functions direct consumers’ emotional changes after the product is used, but overlook the significant impact of consumers’ visual impression of the product on their judgment. Therefore, this paper aims at finding out how to maintain the emotionally durable connection between consumers and products with the help of visual communication design so as to provide guidance for prolonging the service life of products and reducing the waste and consumption of resources. Based on literature reviews on sustainable design, visual communication design, and emotionally durable design, this paper firstly adopted the case study method to analyze more than 85 high-quality design practice cases and put forward preliminary design strategies. The behavior research method was then applied to analyze the consumer behavior involved in the preliminary design strategies, and those design strategies were upgraded according to the analysis results. Based on the above analysis and research work, this paper proposed six design strategies to improve the emotional durability of visual communication design, namely, Enjoyment, Functionality, Narrativity, Symbolism, Interaction, and Innovation. In the area of sustainability, the design strategies proposed in this paper provide a new design mode for emotionally durable visual communication design and make products to be more acceptable to consumers and long-term holding. Emotionally durable visual communication design can influence consumers’ aesthetics and lead consumers’ behavior toward more sustainable use of products.

Abstract:
The concept of practice occurs frequently in current research about the visual. However, the term remains problematic as it cannot always clarify the complexity of the topic. Following an initial discussion of the subject area and central questions of a sociology of visual communication, I proceed to show that visual practices are embedded in many different social structures that condition forms of practice. This aspect is reflected on theoretically with reference to the concept of artifacts outlined by Herbert Simons in Sciences of the Artificial. As Simons does not seek to establish any connection to sociology, his thoughts must first be developed for the discipline. This is achieved, inter alia, by taking up the structural concepts of Giddens and Luhmann. Having established this background, the notion of practice is reconsidered in relation to the structures of social realities and to a concept of the sociology of visual communication. In the discussion, methodological and methodical conclusions are drawn from these conceptual considerations, which are important for the further development of the analysis of the visual.

Abstract:
Bourgeoisia hypocrita Olivier is an atypical species of firefly where males lack light organs in ventrite 7 and have reduced light organs in ventrite 6 and may not produce light at all, while females are flightless and produce a long-lasting glow (up to tens of seconds). Here, photobiology of females is described for the first time. Colour of produced bioluminescence ranges in the green to yellow/green. Spectrum is unimodal peaking at 575–595 nm but more complex than other fireflies in having two shoulders at 545–550 nm and 600–610 nm. A taxonomic re-examination of the species based on recent collections and type material shows that larvae and adults exhibit a peculiar dark pigmentation. Fluorescence and absorbance of adult extracts indicate this pigmentation could be involved in UV protection, in addition to possibly serving as cryptic camouflage. Fluorescence and absorbance of eggs, which have a light gold colour, indicate the luminous compound could be used as an antioxidant during this early life stage. Overall, the signal of bioluminescence shows characteristics of a basal system of flash communication in B. hypocrita, which associates light production not only to visual communication but also possibly to UV and/or free radicals protective mechanisms.

Abstract:
Effective agent communication is always been an important modern area of research. This paper focuses on achieving greater precision in common by improving agent-human communication with the help of visual attention and auditory localization based on a simple model of the superior colliculus in the human brain system. The model receives individual visual and auditory sensory stimuli and combines them to generate an integrated stimulus predicting the location of the sound source. This integrated stimulus is used to generate a motor saccade of the visual system to attend to the sound. The computational model is based on a neural network approach with learning and is explored in experiments reflecting varied conditions to determine whether it mimes the performance of superior colliculus in auditory and visual stimuli integration. Finally with a evaluation strategy carried between unimodal and multimodal data, the efficiency of the computational model of Superior Colliculus is determined. Performance of the neural network based computational model has proven effective in terms of learning, the better performance of the integrated response over unimodal response and providing a realistic communication experience.
