Full textFor decades, social sciences researchers have searched for graphical forms to express human social relationships. The development of computer science and more recently of the Internet has given rise to a new field of research for visualization and social sciences professionals, that of social network visualization. This field can potentially offer new opportunities in reveal new patterns that can benefit a large number of applications and individuals in fields such as commerce, security, knowledge networks and marketing. A large part of social network visualization algorithms and systems relies on graph representations, highlighting relationships amongst individuals and groups of individuals, but mostly neglecting the other available attributes of individuals. Thus, this work presents a set of tools to represent and explore social networks visually, taking into consideration the attributes of the nodes. The first technique employs heterogeneous networks, where both individuals and communities are represented in the graph; the second solution uses visualization techniques based on multidimensional projection, which promote the placement of data in the plane according to some similarity criterion based on attribute; still another proposed technique coordinates multiple views in order to speed up focus in regions of interest in the data sets. The results indicate that the solutions promote high degree of representation power and that concept identification not easily obtained via other methods is possible; the evidence comes from case studies as well as a user evaluation. This work includes a study in the area of graph visualization for social network analysis as well as a system implementing the proposed solutions, that integrate network visualization and multidimensional projections to extract patterns from social networks

Full textThis essay consists of a analysis of a visual campaign consisting of five pairs of images with two images each, so called diptychs, created by Greenpeace. By examining factors like visual working memories, symbolic interaction, socialization, communication methods and visual language and applying these onto a visual communication one could with more ease see how these work and interact. Like this we find out how the sender could make use of different methods of communication to mediate a message as well as how the recipient could come to receive and interpret this. Greenpeace has used ethos, logos and pathos to deliver their message, and a knowledge about their target audiences general socialization to appeal to those connotations that the audience have about the climate crisis and its consequences. By not including a text but instead focus on these connotations and speaking to the observers intellect, Greenpeace calls for personal perception and interpretation. They have also used bright colors, contrasts and interesting compositions to catch the observers eye, attention and interest.

Full textIn vertebrates, perception of light is made possible through the conversion of photon energy into an electrochemical signal in photoreceptors. The photo-isomerization of the chromophore 11-cis-RAL into all-trans-RAL triggers a cascade of signal transduction and leads to loss of light sensitivity of photoreceptors, thus, a recycling process of chromophore called the rétinal visual cycle is involved to restore this sensitivity. The visual cycle takes place in the photoreceptors and retinal pigment epithelium and involves several proteins. The limiting step of this cycle is catalyzed by RPE-specific protein RPE65. Better understanding the regulation of this step might open up new ways for treatment of various pathologies related to the visual cycle activity. Our laboratory has shown that FATP1, a protein involved in lipid metabolism, inhibits the activity of RPE65 in vitro. In this study, we evaluated the effect of the lack of FATP1 on the activity of the visual cycle and visual function in a mouse model. FATP1 ko mice are characterized by lower a and b amplitudes of the elctroretinogram, delayed ERG and retinylesters accumulation recovery after bleache. 11-cis-RAL synthesis rates are similar to those of wt mice. FATP1 ko mice show a greater susceptibility to the aging effects: structural abnormalities were observed in the photoreceptors, Bruch's membrane and choroid without excessive accumulation of lipid or lipofuscin or retinal degeneration. The disturbance of visual function which accopagne the lack of FATP1 in mice could have a more increased effect in human who live longer and wich the retina receives more light. In conclusion, FATP1 might be an important component for the aging of the retina in humans

Full textWe study the challenging problem of tracking an arbitrary object in video sequences with no prior knowledge other than a template annotated in the first frame. To tackle this problem, we build a robust tracking system consisting of the following components. First, for image region representation, we propose some improvements to the region covariance descriptor. Characteristics of a specific object are taken into consideration, before constructing the covariance descriptor. Second, for building the object appearance model, we propose to combine the merits of both generative models and discriminative models by organizing them in a detection cascade. Specifically, generative models are deployed in the early layers for eliminating most easy candidates whereas discriminative models are in the later layers for distinguishing the object from a few similar "distracters". The Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) is employed for building the discriminative object appearance models. Third, for updating the generative models, we propose a weakly-supervised model updating method, which is based on cluster analysis using the mean-shift gradient density estimation procedure. Fourth, a novel online PLS-DA learning algorithm is developed for incrementally updating the discriminative models. The final tracking system that integrates all these building blocks exhibits good robustness for most challenges in visual tracking. Comparing results conducted in challenging video sequences showed that the proposed tracking system performs favorably with respect to a number of state-of-the-art methods

Full textOur thesis research is concerned with the estimation of motion saliency in image sequences. First, we have defined an original method to detect frames in which a salient motion is present. For this, we propose a framework relying on a deep neural network, and on the compensation of the dominant camera motion. Second, we have designed a method for estimating motion saliency maps. This method requires no learning. The motion saliency cue is obtained by an optical flow inpainting step, followed by a comparison with the initial flow. Third, we consider the problem of trajectory saliency estimation to handle progressive saliency over time. We have built a weakly supervised framework based on a recurrent auto-encoder that represents trajectories with latent codes. Performance of the three methods was experimentally assessed on real video datasets

Critical discourse analysis focuses on different types of media texts as an object of investigation, emphasizing the relation between language and social context. This study aims to investigate verbal and visual aspects of articles retrieved from websites of women's magazines from Brazil (Nova) and from the United States (Cosmopolitan). Articles were chosen following specific characteristics: 1) the verbal references of the titles could mention women and men directly or indirectly, but had to talk about them or the relationship among them; 2) the images presented in the articles could be full-body or partial, as long as the reader could identify the subjects as "man" or "woman"; 3) the articles were retrieved from the section "Sex and love" or "Sexo e Amor" of the magazines' website, because they referred to the relationship among men and women, whether they were single or not. The articles were analyzed based on Systemic Functional Linguistics, Critical Discourse Analysis, Visual Grammar and gender studies. The conclusion suggests that a) women`s magazines' websites make use of strategic discourse to propose traditional behavior to women, which are constantly portrayed as the ones responsible for the success of their relationships; b) the authors establish an intimate relationship with the readers as a strategy to gain readers' trust and approval; c) the magazines studied, in general, are persuasive and strategic in their discourse to attract more readers and to propose an improvement in relationships overall; and that d) the authors expose their ideas as being more experienced and having more knowledge than the readers, as if they were sharing their feminine secrets with the readers. The present study, may, therefore, be seen as an initial step towards the understanding of multimodal reading in websites and readers' awareness of the bidirectional relation between language and context.

Full textIn this thesis we focus on the development of methods and techniques to infer affect from visual information. We focus on facial expression analysis since the face is one of the least occluded parts of the body and facial expressions are one of the most visible manifestations of affect. We explore the different psychological theories on affect and emotion, different ways to represent and classify emotions and the relationship between facial expressions and underlying emotions. We present the use of multiscale Gaussian derivatives as an image descriptor for head pose estimation, smile detection before using it for affect sensing. Principal Component Analysis is used for dimensionality reduction while Support Vector Machines are used for classification and regression. We are able to employ the same, simple and effective architecture for head pose estimation, smile detection and affect sensing. We also demonstrate that not only do multiscale Gaussian derivatives perform better than the popular Gabor Filters but are also computationally less expensive to compute. While performing these experiments we discovered that multiscale Gaussian derivatives do not provide an appropriately discriminative image description when the face is only partly illuminated. We overcome this problem by combining Gaussian derivatives with Local Binary Pattern (LBP) histograms. This combination helps us achieve state-of-the-art results for smile detection on the benchmark GENKI database which contains images of people in the "wild" collected from the internet. We use the same description method for face recognition on the CMU-PIE database and the challenging extended YaleB database and our results compare well with the state-of-the-art. In the case of face recognition we use metric learning for classification, adopting the Minkowski distance as the similarity measure. We find that L1 and L2 norms are not always the optimum distance metrics and the optimum is often an Lp norm where p is not an integer. Lastly we develop a multi-modal system for depression estimation with audio and video information as input. We use Local Binary Patterns -Three Orthogonal Planes (LBP-TOP) features to capture intra-facial movements in the videos and dense trajectories for macro movements such as the movement of the head and shoulders. These video features along with Low Level Descriptor (LLD) audio features are encoded using Fisher Vectors and finally a Support Vector Machine is used for regression. We discover that the LBP-TOP features encoded with Fisher Vectors alone are enough to outperform the baseline method on the Audio Visual Emotion Challenge (AVEC) 2014 database. We thereby present an effective technique for depression estimation which can be easily extended for other slowly varying aspects of emotions such as mood

O conceito orientador do sistema é apresentado.
Abstract: This research consists in the conception and implementation of a system for kinematic analysis of human movements, based on video registers. The guide concept is presented. Problems inherent to the three-dimensional kinematic analysis of human movements are formulated and solutions proposed. The implemented solutions are tested and applied examples shown. The main features of the proposed system are the independence in relation to dedicated hardware, the possibility to use passive and active markers under distinct experimental condition, the goodness of the results, the simplicity to operate and the low cost. Two video cameras or more register the movement of interest. The image sequences are digitalised and saved on the hard disk. The images are measured and analysed in a dedicated software, where algorithms to manual and automatic measurement are available. In the software were implemented tools for automatic tracking of markers, pattern recognition and image processing. In order to allow the three-dimensional analysis of movements, procedures are implemented for cameras calibration, co-ordinates reconstruction, register synchronisation from non-synchronised cameras and the estimation of the goodness from results

Full textGeometric operations applied to a 3D mesh introduce geometric distortion in the form of vertex displacement that can be visible to a human observer. In this thesis, we have studied the perceptual impact of these geometric distortions. More precisely, our goal is to compute the threshold beyond which a local geometric distortion becomes visible. In order to reach this goal, we start by evaluating perceptually relevant properties on 3D meshes. We have then performed a series of psychophysical experiments in which we measured the visibility threshold relative to various properties of the Human Visual System (contrast sensitivity and visual masking). The results of these experiments allowed us to propose an algorithm that computes the visibility threshold relative to a local geometric distortion. This algorithm is capable of adapting to the different display condition of 3D meshes (resolution, display size, illumination condition and rendering). Finally, we showcase the utility of our work by integrating the developed perceptual method in several geometric operations such as mesh simplification and adaptive subdivision

Abstract: This work investigates the contributions of Production Medias in The Visual Language. The main focus is based on the search of the expressive potential of the different Medias and the innpvations they can provide in the evolution of Human Communications. The investigation deals with the processes of communication territories: the sign's uni verse. The search methods adopted herein are the Charles Sanders peirce Semiotic principIes. The methodological choice was determined because the Semiotic system has the attributions that mostly comprise expectations about the object in study. The syntatical analysis of the Visual Language was priviledged by the following two reasons: First, as the Visual specificalness was searched for, the best way achieved was by means of the syntatical analysis of its language. The second motive is the syntax's great expressive potential of Eletronic Medias. These differ from the others (Handcraft and Mechanic Medias) as they belong to our historical reality and arise more interest. According to observations of the universe searched compreending technical and cognitive aspects of communication, one notices their connection by two territories, such as: The questions referring to Mind Elaboration Language and those related to Production Media of this language. As the two above frontiers are the habitat of the sign, the common points will be found therein. The visual sign's syntatic analysis determined, through the semiotic principIes, the Visual Language Classification. The specific attributes of the Production Media were recognized through that Classification. By this way, this work estimates the Visual Language by semiotic principIes; attains the contributions of its Production Media and, finally, offers experiments directed by cognitive processes and expressive possibilities of Eletronic media, confirming the hereby presented theory

Abstract: The prevention or arrestment of caries lesions around restorations may be done through plaque removal and use of topical fluorides. Restorative materiaIs that release fluoride are still recommended for patients with high caries risk, although the real effect of their association with topical fluorides is not known. The aim of this study was to evaluate, in vitro, the cariostatic effect of six restorative materiaIs that contain fluoride associated with fluoride and non-fluoride dentifrices on human dental enamel. Standardized class V cavities were prepared on 240 enamel fTagments, randomly assigned in 12 groups. After cavity restoration, the fragments were submitted to 1000 thermal cycles, and to demineralization/remineralization cycles, simulating a high cariogenic challenge. During pH cycles, slurries of fluoride and non-fluoride dentifuces were applied for tive minutes after demineralization solution. Artificial caries-like lesions formations were scored independently and blindly by tive calibrated examiners, using a 0 to 3 ordinal scale through visual inspection. The data were evaluated by Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by paired comparisons test (?=0,05). There were no significant differences among restorative materiaIs when associated with fluoride dentifuces. Ketac-Fil was the unique that did not differ when associated with fluoride or non-fluoride dentifrices. Under experimental conditions, the association of restorative materiaIs with a fluoride dentifrice provided better cariostatic effect, except to the conventional glass ionomer cement, whose effect did not change with the dentifrice application

Abstract: This dissertation analyses the story ¿Campo Geral¿ by Guimarães Rosa, considering the sensorial perception of the character Miguilim. Before that, however, there is a study about the sensorial perception in Rosa¿s work, taking into account some ideas of the philosopher Merleau-Ponty. Fragments from Boiada (notes handwritten by Rosa all along his journey through the hinterland) are analysed, as well as excerpts taken from the short stories ¿São Marcos¿, ¿A hora e a vez de Augusto Matraga¿ and the novel Grande Sertão:Veredas. Above all, here is discussed the relation between the sensorial perception of the characters and the poetic nature of Rosa¿s language. Also included in this study is the relation between the body of the word and the body of the reader. The analysis of ¿Campo Geral¿ involves the experience of the visible. The myopic look of Miguilim reveals an experience of poetic order and resistance to a world that reduces the body to a mere instrument of work. Finally, under disc Such activity elaborates senses to the sensorial perceptions of the character and ends up revealing iself an important device in the facing of the death and in the affirmation of the joy, fundamental themes in ¿Campo Geral¿

Colours theory works of different country‘s and time’s colourist‘s, artist‘s, psychologist‘s, philosopher‘s and scientist’s were collected and summarized. Common and specific features of geometrical figures of different colours were discussed. Examples of combinations of colours were presented and aesthetic art influence was discussed. Different, pictures and understandable literature about compositions of colours was presented to schoolchildren during 2007-2008 year training experiment. Literature on psychology and visual expression of young people was analyzed. Additional information about compositions of colours and light was provided to the schoolchildren of the 5th - 7th class during the research. Completed tests and content analysis of art works of schoolchildren proved hypothesis that it is right to give to young people the knowledge about the colours because the schoolchildren of the 5th class were interested in contrasts and the schoolchildren of upper classes were interested in half-tones and indistinct colours.

Full textAlong the past two decades, the industry has developed several commercial products with audio-visual sensing capabilities. Most of them consists on a videocamera with an embedded microphone (mobile phones, tablets, etc). Other, such as Kinect, include depth sensors and/or small microphone arrays. Also, there are some mobile phones equipped with a stereo camera pair. At the same time, many research-oriented systems became available (e.g., humanoid robots such as NAO). Since all these systems are small in volume, their sensors are close to each other. Therefore, they are not able to capture de global scene, but one point of view of the ongoing social interplay. We refer to this as "Egocentric Audio-Visual Scene Analysis''.This thesis contributes to this field in several aspects. Firstly, by providing a publicly available data set targeting applications such as action/gesture recognition, speaker localization, tracking and diarisation, sound source localization, dialogue modelling, etc. This work has been used later on inside and outside the thesis. We also investigated the problem of AV event detection. We showed how the trust on one of the modalities (visual to be precise) can be modeled and used to bias the method, leading to a visually-supervised EM algorithm (ViSEM). Afterwards we modified the approach to target audio-visual speaker detection yielding to an on-line method working in the humanoid robot NAO. In parallel to the work on audio-visual speaker detection, we developed a new approach for audio-visual command recognition. We explored different features and classifiers and confirmed that the use of audio-visual data increases the performance when compared to auditory-only and to video-only classifiers. Later, we sought for the best method using tiny training sets (5-10 samples per class). This is interesting because real systems need to adapt and learn new commands from the user. Such systems need to be operational with a few examples for the general public usage. Finally, we contributed to the field of sound source localization, in the particular case of non-coplanar microphone arrays. This is interesting because the geometry of the microphone can be any. Consequently, this opens the door to dynamic microphone arrays that would adapt their geometry to fit some particular tasks. Also, because the design of commercial systems may be subject to certain constraints for which circular or linear arrays are not suited

Full textHumans receive large quantity of information from the environment with sight and hearing. To help us to react rapidly and properly, there exist mechanisms in the brain to bias attention towards particular regions, namely the salient regions. This attentional bias is not only influenced by vision, but also influenced by audio-visual interaction. According to existing literature, the visual attention can be studied towards eye movements, however the sound effect on eye movement in videos is little known. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the influence of sound in videos on eye movement and to propose an audio-visual saliency model to predict salient regions in videos more accurately. For this purpose, we designed a first audio-visual experiment of eye tracking. We created a database of short video excerpts selected from various films. These excerpts were viewed by participants either with their original soundtrack (AV condition), or without soundtrack (V condition). We analyzed the difference of eye positions between participants with AV and V conditions. The results show that there does exist an effect of sound on eye movement and the effect is greater for the on-screen speech class. Then, we designed a second audio-visual experiment with thirteen classes of sound. Through comparing the difference of eye positions between participants with AV and V conditions, we conclude that the effect of sound is different depending on the type of sound, and the classes with human voice (i.e. speech, singer, human noise and singers classes) have the greatest effect. More precisely, sound source significantly attracted eye position only when the sound was human voice. Moreover, participants with AV condition had a shorter average duration of fixation than with V condition. Finally, we proposed a preliminary audio-visual saliency model based on the findings of the above experiments. In this model, two fusion strategies of audio and visual information were described: one for speech sound class, and one for musical instrument sound class. The audio-visual fusion strategies defined in the model improves its predictability with AV condition

Full textThe thesis deals with the problem of visual quality control of high quality manufactured products. We make the hypothesis that the control of this quality will be still realized many years by a visual inspection of the products. The first chapter presents a bibliographical study of different elements relating to the quality control in general, and particularly, the visual inspection. The chapter 2 describes the generic approach that we propose to perceive, then evaluate an anomaly. This approach separates in a formal way the perception of an anomaly from its evaluation. We show that this distinction gives a better comprehension of the variability sources in the visual inspection. Based on the approaches very largely used within the framework of the sensory analysis, our approach thus formalizes these two steps in order to reduce the variability in the decision of conformity during a visual inspection. The chapter 3 proposes a structuring metrological approach having for objective to guarantee the accuracy and the reduced variability in time and space. Our suggestion, based on the concepts of a dimensional metrology, integrates the specificities related to any sensory measurement carried out by the man, and in particular the part of significant subjectivity which can be associated to this measurement. Based on the evaluation of only one anomaly, we describe in the chapter 4 an approach allowing to decide acceptance or refusal of a product combining various anomalies on various surfaces. Our approach, based on the Taguchi's loss function, makes it possible to generalize with the visual inspection the approaches of tolerance largely used in geometrical quality of the products. The chapter 5 illustrates the application of these concepts within the company with which we collaborated. It also proposes a synthesis of profits that such an approach can produce

Full textThe goal of this thesis is to design algorithms that enable robust detection of objectsand events in videos through joint audio-visual analysis. This is motivated by humans’remarkable ability to meaningfully integrate auditory and visual characteristics forperception in noisy scenarios. To this end, we identify two kinds of natural associationsbetween the modalities in recordings made using a single microphone and camera, namely motion-audio correlation and appearance-audio co-occurrence.For the former, we use audio source separation as the primary application andpropose two novel methods within the popular non-negative matrix factorizationframework. The central idea is to utilize the temporal correlation between audio andmotion for objects/actions where the sound-producing motion is visible. The firstproposed method focuses on soft coupling between audio and motion representationscapturing temporal variations, while the second is based on cross-modal regression. We segregate several challenging audio mixtures of string instruments into theirconstituent sources using these approaches. To identify and extract many commonly encountered objects, we leverageappearance–audio co-occurrence in large datasets. This complementary associationmechanism is particularly useful for objects where motion-based correlations are notvisible or available. The problem is dealt with in a weakly-supervised setting whereinwe design a representation learning framework for robust AV event classification, visual object localization, audio event detection and source separation. We extensively test the proposed ideas on publicly available datasets. The experimentsdemonstrate several intuitive multimodal phenomena that humans utilize on aregular basis for robust scene understanding

Full textThe Progressive Visual Analytics (PVA) paradigm has been proposed to alleviate difficulties of Visual Analytics when dealing with large datasets or time-consuming algorithms, by using intermediate results and interactions between the human and the running algorithm. Our work is twofold. First, by considering that the notion of “interaction” was not well defined for PVA, we focused on providing a structured vision of what interacting with an algorithm in PVA means. Second, we focused on the design and implementation of a progressive sequential pattern mining algorithm and system, allowing to explore both the patterns and the underlying data, with a focus on the analyst/algorithm interactions. The perspectives opened by our work deal with 1/ assisting analysts in their interactions with algorithm in PVA settings; 2/ further exploring interaction in PVA ; 3/ creating natively progressive algorithms, for which progressiveness and interaction are at the core of the design

Abstract: This study presents a description and analysis of a choreographic creation process intitled "À Escuta do Mar" (Waiting to Hear the Sea...). The study is based on elements of the feminine universe poetry, which is the central subject of my criations. The choreographic part aims to present a synthesis of many technical and inventive works in dance and theater of my artistic carrer. While revisiting my old creations in a search for a poetical corporal language or a particular poetry in dance I had analyzed and described the characters based on different feminine references, and also had observed the codified techniques and preconceived gestures used in each creation. Those feminine characters together with the character of this new choreographic proposal are results of a search for my own personal artistic language. Thus, this new character is a metaphor of my "hearing", that is, of a particular feminine reference.

Full textThis thesis focuses on the problem of understanding visual contents, which can be images, videos or 3D contents. Understanding means that we aim at inferring semantic information about the visual content. The goal of our work is to study methods that combine two types of approaches: 1) automatic content analysis and 2) an analysis of how humans interact with the content (in other words, usage analysis). We start by reviewing the state of the art from both Computer Vision and Multimedia communities. Twenty years ago, the main approach was aiming at a fully automatic understanding of images. This approach today gives way to different forms of human intervention, whether it is through the constitution of annotated datasets, or by solving problems interactively (e.g. detection or segmentation), or by the implicit collection of information gathered from content usages. These different types of human intervention are at the heart of modern research questions: how to motivate human contributors? How to design interactive scenarii that will generate interactions that contribute to content understanding? How to check or ensure the quality of human contributions? How to aggregate human contributions? How to fuse inputs obtained from usage analysis with traditional outputs from content analysis? Our literature review addresses these questions and allows us to position the contributions of this thesis. In our first set of contributions we revisit the detection of important (or salient) regions through implicit feedback from users that either consume or produce visual contents. In 2D, we develop several interfaces of interactive video (e.g. zoomable video) in order to coordinate content analysis and usage analysis. We also generalize these results to 3D by introducing a new detector of salient regions that builds upon simultaneous video recordings of the same public artistic performance (dance show, chant, etc.) by multiple users. The second contribution of our work aims at a semantic understanding of fixed images. With this goal in mind, we use data gathered through a game, Ask’nSeek, that we created. Elementary interactions (such as clicks) together with textual input data from players are, as before, mixed with automatic analysis of images. In particular, we show the usefulness of interactions that help revealing spatial relations between different objects in a scene. After studying the problem of detecting objects on a scene, we also adress the more ambitious problem of segmentation

Full textA visual servoing scheme consists of a closed-loop control approach which uses visual information feedback to control the movement of a robotic system. This data, called visual features, can be 2D or 3D. This thesis deals with the development of a new generation of 2D direct visual servoing methods in which the signal control inputs are the coefficients of a multiscale image representation. Specially, we consider the use of multiscale image representations that are based on discrete wavelet and shearlet transformations. This kind of representations allows us to obtain several descriptions of the image based on either low or high frequencies levels. Indeed, high coefficients in the wavelet or in the shearlet transformation of the image correspond to image singularities. This thesis has begun with the development of a shearlet-based visual servoing for ultrasound imaging that has performed well in precision and robustness for this medical application. Nevertheless, the main contribution is a framework allowing us to use several multi-scale representations of the image. It was then tested with conventional white light camera and with an optical coherence tomography imaging system with nominal and unfavorable conditions. Then, the wavelet and the shearlet based methods showed their accuracy and their robustness in several conditions and led to the use of both visual servoing and compressed sensing as the main perspective of this work

Full textNowadays, the automotive coating market is governed by a demand for deep and vibrant colors with effects. In this field, the requirement is very high because the color is associated with a sign of quality. In a typical collision, different parts of the vehicle may be damaged. The damaged part must be repaired, sanded and prepared before being painted. To reduce costs, the body shop must then prepare a paint with a good color matching, and thus as fast as possible. It is therefore necessary for the formulation of the repair coating to reproduce the effects, both colored and textured, from absorbent or effect pigments (aluminum particles, pearlescent materials …) from a characterization of the concerned vehicle coating. It is relatively simple to qualify the colored effects from the reflectance curves and then the CIELab coordinates. However, the description of the texturing effect generated by the distribution of effect particles at the microstructure scale is quite complex. The metrological approach of the perceptive properties is still at its beginnings. The parameters used do not necessarily correspond directly to the phenomena actually perceived by the human eye. As part of this thesis work, the mobilization of expert knowledge through various sessions of free sorting and brainstorming on coated samples made it possible to highlight really perceptive texture descriptors. These descriptors have been the subject of "objective" evaluations by experienced observers. They thus made it possible to associate a quantitative evaluation scale with each descriptor. This stage of the present thesis work allowed the establishment of ground truth data materialized by a set of reference samples representing different ordered levels of a descriptor. These ground truth data were then used to design a set of measurable physical texture descriptors that were directly correlated to perceptual scales constructed in the previous step. In the procedure developed, the human eye has been replaced by a digital camera acting as a tristimulus integrator of radiometric information. The image acquisition phase was a decisive step in the process: it was necessary to reproduce the conditions of evaluation of the properties perceived, recognized and retained during the various stages using expert human observers. It was then possible to characterize the texture phenomena by image analysis and to correlate them with the values of the previously defined mean observer
