Abstract:
Prior studies on museum visitors are extensively centred on national museums, the studies on regional museums are scarce. To fill in the academic gap, a research is proposed concerning the visitors of Dalarna Museum, a regional museum in Sweden. With an aim to profile visitors’ demographic characteristics and investigate the motivational factors that influence visitors’ frequency of visits, a face-to-face questionnaire survey was implemented at Dalarna Museum. To get visitors’ demographic characteristics, a few closed and open questions are devised to profile visitors’ gender, age, occupation, income, education, number of children and residence place. To investigate the motivational factors that influence visitors’ frequency of visits, a seven-point Likert questionnaire is employed with 17 motivational factors included. During a 12-day data collection, 372 visitors were invited to participate in the questionnaire survey, whereof 357 had filled in the questionnaire, generating a response rate that is as high as 96 percent. After data cleansing, there are 355 completed and valid responses in total. According to the results, some of visitors’ demographic characteristics are similar including gender, age, occupation, income, and number of children. However, the characteristics regarding visitors’ residence places and educational attainments are different comparing the frequent visitors to occasional visitors. Through running a multiple regression analysis, 13 out of the 17 motivational factors are detected having significant influences on visitors’ frequency of visits to Dalarna Museum, of which the most influential one is visitors’ day-outs with their friends and relatives.

Wiberg, Dustin S. "Development of a Survey Measuring Visitor Satisfaction and Service Quality of Cultural and Natural Sites in Belize." DigitalCommons@USU, 2009. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/294.

Full text
Abstract:
The literature suggests that a correlation exists between visitor satisfaction and a visitor's choice to re-experience a product. The higher one's satisfaction level, the more likely he/she is to experience the product again and/or provide positive word-of-mouth advertising to friends and family. The Tian-Cole and Crompton model was chosen because of its acknowledgment and explanation of the differences between Visitor Satisfaction (VS) and Service Quality (SQ) and how their relationship influences satisfaction and contributes to Future Destination Selection. In addition to identifying a theoretical framework that explains why visitors return, it was necessary to identify a survey methodology to be used in developing the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve (MPRFR) visitor satisfaction surveys. It was determined that a combination of the Relative Performance Assessment (RPA) and Customer Service Questionnaire (CSQ) was an appropriate survey framework for a visitor satisfaction survey. As a result of the research, two visitor satisfaction surveys were developed: Intercept Survey and Mail-back Survey. The Intercept Survey will be administered at a MPRFR site. It was designed to be concise and not take much of the visitor's time. This survey will be used to gather general information about visitor characteristics and level of satisfaction while at a site. The Mail-back Survey will be sent to the visitor after their trip so more time can be devoted to answering a more detailed visitor satisfaction survey. This survey asks visitors to indicate what site characteristics are important to them and then rate their satisfaction with each item. Instruments from the report entitled "A Front Country Visitor Study for Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument" were used as an example of how to format a visitor satisfaction survey and how to use the collected data as a managerial tool. The two main objectives of this research were accomplished and have established a foundation upon which subsequent research efforts will begin. This work serves as a catalyst to improving Belizean site planning, design, and management by better understanding what site characteristics contribute to visitor satisfaction.

Plews, Caroline Margaret Coatsworth. "Clients' reports of the work of health visitors in the child health clinic and during home visits." Thesis, University of Hull, 2001. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:4626.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines clients' reports of aspects of a single child health clinic visit and of a home visit by the health visitor. There are two foci of the thesis. First: recall; value and use of the advice/information selected by the client as the most important; second, an exploration of the meaning of support identified by some clients.Seven health visitors participated in the research, which incorporated two studies. In the first study, the researcher observed the content of discussions between 100 clients and the health visitor in child health clinics. These clients were then interviewed at home and asked questions about the advice/information received from the health visitor during theirprevious visit to the child health clinic. For the second study, information was recorded by the health visitor describing the content of 149 home visits. Clients were interviewed at home and asked similar questions regarding advice/information received from the health visitor. In addition, those clients who described receiving support were asked to describe the meaning to them of this aspectof the visit.Data analysis for both studies included descriptive and inferential statistics and content analysis.Findings from both studies indicate that recall of advice/information is related to the amount of advice/information given to the client. This may have implications for the amount of advice/information that health visitors are encouraged to provide.Advice/information received from the health visitor was generally valued and used by the mothers in both studies. Clients appeared most likely to be dissatisfied when topics had been raised which they had no interest in discussing. It is suggested that that there may be correspondence between some clients' descriptions of support, and taxonomies of social support found in social support literature. An exploration of health visiting work employing the concepts of social support is recommended.

Jackman, Anna Hamilton. "Unmanned geographies : drone visions and visions of the drone." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/26196.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis approaches the study of the (aerial) military and non-military drone through an examination of the communities that variously compel and propel it into action: that culturally constitute it. Employing the term ‘proponent communities’, this thesis approaches the drone through an empiric-led exploration of such actors, those including: manufacturers, industry, regulators, governments, militaries, trade associations and end users. These proponent communities are accessed through fieldwork at three central sites, namely military and non-military tradeshows, military conferences, and through the completion of numerous industry educational courses. Whilst by no means a homogenous group, such communities remain important in crafting, composing, (re)producing and circulating both technical and cultural knowledges of the drone. In approaching the drone’s cultural constitution, the thesis pursues two distinct analytic foci. First, in response to the tendency of extant scholarship to focus upon what the functioning drone does and its implications, thus treating it like a ‘black box’, the thesis ‘opens’ the drone through an exploration of particular proponent cultures through which it is instituted. Examining both the role of military drone operators and the employment of drones with multi-sensory payloads in emergency service settings, over two chapters the thesis explores the cultures through which the drone comes to function in framing that below it. Second, the thesis explores a series of mechanisms through which the drone is articulated, visualized and otherwise legitimated as a tool, asset, and commodity within military and non-military drone tradeshows. In approaching the drone at the tradeshow, the thesis expands extant analyses of the drone by considering its cultural constitution at such hitherto unexamined sites of consumption. In approaching the cultural constitution of the drone through these two strands of investigation the thesis offers three contributions. First, in working within a research context punctuated with access limitations, the thesis opens up different windows of access at which drone proponent communities gather, form, and (re)compose drone knowledges. Second, in approaching the drone at sites in which it is instituted and traded, the thesis engages with both proponent knowledges of employment, and articulations of expectation and potential therein. It demonstrates that such an engagement facilitates the challenging of several dominant and entrenched narratives surrounding the drone, variously revealing them as inadequate, fractured, or fantastical. Third, whilst the main contribution of this thesis is to geographies, and the wider interdisciplinary field, of drone scholarship, the thesis argues for, and demonstrates the value of, engaging with alternative geographical literatures in developing its argumentation. In situating the drone within such wider discussions and landscapes the thesis thus productively develops distinct frameworks through which to conceptually and empirically engage with the drone.

Abstract:
The main purpose of the sun visor is to prevent the driver and passengers to get blinded by the sunlight. It is essential that the sun visor is not blocking the view and that the driver has a clear line of sight so that collisions can be prevented. However, the solution of today is limited as it only covers superior parts of the light and its functionality depends on the head position of the driver and passengers. Therefore, ÅF has initiated this thesis project to develop and improve the product with the goal to further prevent the driver and passengers from being blinded by the sunlight. The scope of the project is to generate new concepts for the sun visor using product development methods. The product development process involves various phases. Collecting and identifying customer needs and wishes resulted in a detailed requirement specification. Competitor analysis, or benchmarking, was conducted to create awareness of what already exists on the market. New concepts were created by two separate brainstorming sessions. These new concepts were evaluated by concept screening and concept scoring matrices and a final concept was chosen for further development. The final concept was modeled and developed with all necessary components in CAD with help of the software Catia V5. A material selection was performed on the new components with help of CES Edupack and a final material suggestion for each component was presented. The new sun visor consists of a sun curtain that is connected to profiles in the WEM cover and the a-pillar. An electric motor in combination with a spring regulates the upward and downward motion of the sun visor to a precise position. The driver or passenger can regulate the height of the sun curtain by pushing a button. An advantage with the new design is that it eliminates the leakage between the sun visor and the WEM cover and to the a-pillar. The designed sun visor does not fit in the current interior of the driver compartment but has been created as close as possible to fit the current space with only small adjustments to the interior. In addition, the components of the new sun visor needs to be redesigned, mainly the WEM cover, to allow the new sun visor to reach down to the lowest allowed point. The new concept has the potential to increase the visibility more efficient than the standard sun visor.

Abstract:
Variational techniques are used to develop a theory for the time evolution of a thin strand of viscous fluid suspended from two points. The shape of the strand is approximated to be a parabola and energy conservation is used to derive a differential equation modeling the change in height over time. Data is collected with a high resolution camera and a strobe light to obtain the position and shape of the strand over multiple intervals of time. Three very different and unexpected types of behaviors are observed depending on the initial thickness and shape of the filament. The approximation fits well with one type of behavior but variations in the thickness of the strand, and consequently in the center of mass, need to be factored in to predict the others.

Abstract:
We have qualitatively explained the experiments of McCloud and Maher (McCloud and Maher (95)) for the viscous fingering problem in which an anisotropy in the surface tension parameter was imposed by engraving a grid in one of the plates of the Hele-Shaw cell. We saw the need to approach the problem in an analytical form. Therefore we decided to extend solvability theory to incorporate the effect of anisotropy. We have introduced the anisotropy through a moving boundary condition by considering an effective anisotropic surface tension with an anisotropy entering as the simplest cosine term having the right symmetry for a square lattice. We carried out the singular perturbation appropriate for the surface tension parameter assuming the length scale introduced by the anisotropy is small in comparison with the length scale introduced by the surface tension. In this sense, the perturbation can be said to be microscopic. For the case in which the surface tension has a maximum at the finger tip, our theory provides two possible solutions: one corresponding to the solution of the isotropic case and a new solution which, below a threshold of the surface tension parameter, predicts a wider finger than the isotropic solution. Intuitively, we expect the "old" solution, namely the one that does not differ from the isotropic case, to be the selected solution for large values of the surface tension parameter and we expect the new solution to be selected for small values of the surface tension parameter. This was confirmed by dynamical simulations of the interface done by David Jasnow. His simulation predicts that for the case in which the surface tension has a maximum at the finger tip, anisotropy is irrelevant for large values of the surface tension parameter. Furthermore below a threshold in this surface tension parameter, the selected finger width is systematically wider than the corresponding isotropic case. We conclude that our solvability theory together with the dynamic

We present a general theory for the dynamics of thin viscous sheets. Employing concepts from differential geometry and tensor calculus we derive the governing equations in terms of a coordinate system that moves with the film. Special attention is given to incorporating inertia and the curvature forces that arise from the thickness variations along the film. Exploiting the slenderness of the film, we assume that the transverse fluid velocity is small compared to the longitudinal one and perform a perturbation expansion to obtain the leading order equations when the center-surface that defines the coordinate system is parametrized by lines of curvature. We then focus on the dynamics of flat film rupture, in an attempt to gain some insights into the sheet breakup and its fragmentation into droplets. By combining analytical and numerical methods, we extend the prior work on the subject and compare our numerical simulations with experimental work reported in the literature.

A escolha desta metodologia procurou salvaguardar a complexidade e riqueza deste tema.

Abstract:
This thesis is a creative study of poetry and visual art, containing fifty poems and ten illustrations. It is situated on the continuum of a long and rich history of interactions between poetry and the visual arts, from the earliest works of ekphrasis poetry written over two-thousand years ago, and the Haiga poets of 11th-century Japan blending painting and haiku, to the numerous and varied works of contemporary poets and artists. Inspiration for this creative endeavor spans the works of many poet-artists, including William Blake, Mark Strand, Charles Simic, Russell Edson, Anne Carson, Nick Flynn, and Tom Phillips, and many others who have created visual and concrete poetry, erasure poetry, graphic poetry, broadsides, and illustrated collections. The visual art contained in this thesis is not intended as a mere addition to the poetry, rather the poetry and art function as a composite, an integrated form that simultaneously illustrates, augments, contrasts, and distorts.

Abstract:
Viscous fingering occurs when one fluid displaces another fluid of a greater viscosity in a porous medium or a Hele-Shaw cell. Linear stability analysis is used to predict methods of suppressing instability. Then, experiments in which nonlinear growth dominates pattern formation are analysed to explore the nonlinear impact of strategies of suppressing finger growth. Often, chemical treatment fluid is injected into oil reservoirs in order to prevent sand production. This treatment fluid is usually followed by water injection to clean up the well. We explore the potential for viscous instability of the interface between the treatment fluid and the water, and also the treatment fluid and the oil, as a function of the volume of treatment fluid and the injection rate and viscosity ratios of the different fluids. For a given volume of treatment fluid and a given injection rate, we find the optimal viscosity of the treatment fluid to minimise the viscous instability. In the case of axisymmetric injection, the stabilisation associated with the azimuthal stretching of modes leads to a further constraint on the optimisation of the viscosity. In the case of oil production, polymers may be added to the displacing water in order to reduce adverse viscosity gradients. We also explore the case in which these polymers have a time-dependent viscosity, for example through the slow release from encapsulant. We calculate the injection flow rate profile that minimises the final amplitude of instability in both rectilinear and axisymmetric geometries. In a development of the model, we repeat the calculation for a shear-thinning rheology. Finally, experiments are analysed in which the nonlinear growth of viscous fingers develops to test the influence of different injection profiles on the development of instability. Diffusion Limited Aggregation (DLA) simulations are performed for comparison. In all cases, the evolving pattern has a saturation distribution, with an inner zone in which the fingers are static and an outer zone in which the fingers advance and grow. In the very centre of the viscous fingering patterns, there is a small fully-saturated region. In the experiments, the mass distribution in the inner zone varies with radius as a power law which relates to the fractal dimension for the analogue DLA simulations. In the outer region the saturation decreases linearly with radius. The radius of the inner frozen zone is approximately 2/3 of the outer radius in the cases of DLA and -- after a period of evolution -- the viscous fingering experiments. This allows the radial extents of the inner and outer zones to be predicted. The ratio of each radius to the extent of the fully-saturated region is independent of the injection profile and corresponds to values for DLA.

This work is about an analysis of the images that we elaborated and/or we evoke when we observe the importance of the understanding of the reality, that is constituted with the action of the reading and, consequently, of the interpretation of texts of didactic, literary and also scientific character. We looked for the identification of possible images that they can result of such (re)interpretation, associated, for its time, to the geographical knowledge. So, our reflections are based on the analysis of the texts and of the MAN'S figure, present in the three types of the considered texts, therefore we understood its performance and interference in the geographical space and, due to this situation, we questioned which images result and as they interfere in the consolidation of what we denominate as Geography of the reality and geographical reality.

Abstract:

This thesis consists of an introduction and five papers concerning different numerical and mathematical aspects of viscous shocks.

Hyperbolic conservation laws are used to model wave motion and advect- ive transport in a variety of physical applications. Solutions of hyperbolic conservation laws may become discontinuous, even in cases where initial and boundary data are smooth. Shock waves is one important type of discontinu- ity. It is also interesting to study the corresponding slightly viscous system, i.e., the system obtained when a small viscous term is added to the hyper- bolic system of equations. By a viscous shock we denote a thin transition layer which appears in the solution of the slightly viscous system instead of a shock in the corresponding purely hyperbolic problem.

A slightly viscous system, a so called modified equation, is often used to model numerical solutions of hyperbolic conservation laws and their beha- vior in the vicinity of shocks. Computations presented elsewhere show that numerical solutions of hyperbolic conservation laws obtained by higher order accurate shock capturing methods in many cases are only first order accurate downstream of shocks. We use a modified equation to model numerical solu- tions obtained by a generic second order shock capturing scheme for a time dependent system in one space dimension. We present analysis that show how the first order error term is related to the viscous terms and show that it is possible to eliminate the first order downstream error by choosing a special viscosity term. This is verified in computations. We also extend the analysis to a stationary problem in two space dimensions.

Though the technique of modified equation is widely used, rather little is known about when (for what methods etc.) it is applicable. The use of a modified equation as a model for a numerical solution is only relevant if the numerical solution behaves as a continuous function. We have experimentally investigated a range of high resolution shock capturing methods. Our experiments indicate that for many of the methods there is a continuous shock profile. For some of the methods, however, this not the case. In general the behavior in the shock region is very complicated.

Systems of hyperbolic conservation laws with solutions containing shock waves, and corresponding slightly viscous equations, are examples where the available theoretical results on existence and uniqueness of solutions are very limited, though it is often straightforward to find approximate numerical solu- tions. We present a computer-assisted technique to prove existence of solu- tions of non-linear boundary value ODEs, which is based on using an approx- imate, numerical solution. The technique is applied to stationary solutions of the viscous Burgers' equation. We also study a corresponding method suggested by Yamamoto in SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 35(5)1998, and apply also this method to the viscous Burgers' equation.

Abstract:
Nowadays machine learning (especially deep learning) techniques are being incorporated to many intelligent systems affecting the quality of human life. The ultimate purpose of these systems is to perform automated decision making, and in order to achieve this, predictive systems need to return estimates of their confidence. Powered by the rules of probability, Bayesian inference is the gold standard method to perform coherent reasoning under uncertainty. It is generally believed that intelligent systems following the Bayesian approach can better incorporate uncertainty information for reliable decision making, and be less vulnerable to attacks such as data poisoning. Critically, the success of Bayesian methods in practice, including the recent resurgence of Bayesian deep learning, relies on fast and accurate approximate Bayesian inference applied to probabilistic models. These approximate inference methods perform (approximate) Bayesian reasoning at a relatively low cost in terms of time and memory, thus allowing the principles of Bayesian modelling to be applied to many practical settings. However, more work needs to be done to scale approximate Bayesian inference methods to big systems such as deep neural networks and large-scale dataset such as ImageNet. In this thesis we develop new algorithms towards addressing the open challenges in approximate inference. In the first part of the thesis we develop two new approximate inference algorithms, by drawing inspiration from the well known expectation propagation and message passing algorithms. Both approaches provide a unifying view of existing variational methods from different algorithmic perspectives. We also demonstrate that they lead to better calibrated inference results for complex models such as neural network classifiers and deep generative models, and scale to large datasets containing hundreds of thousands of data-points. In the second theme of the thesis we propose a new research direction for approximate inference: developing algorithms for fitting posterior approximations of arbitrary form, by rethinking the fundamental principles of Bayesian computation and the necessity of algorithmic constraints in traditional inference schemes. We specify four algorithmic options for the development of such new generation approximate inference methods, with one of them further investigated and applied to Bayesian deep learning tasks.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Slender structures in fluid flow exhibit a variety of rich behaviors. Here we study the equilibrium shapes of perfectly flexible strings that are moving with a uniform velocity and axial flow in viscous fluid. The string is acted upon by local, anisotropic, linear drag forces and a uniform body force. Generically, the configurations of the string are planar, and we provide analytical expressions for the equilibrium shapes of the string as a first order five parameter dynamical system for the tangential angle of the body ($theta$). Phase portraits in the angle-curvature ($theta,partial_s theta$) plane are generated, that can be shown to be $pi$ periodic after appropriate scaling and reflection operations. The rich parameter space allows for different kinds of phase portraits that give rise to a variety of curve geometries. Some of these solutions are unstable due to the presence of compressive stresses. Special cases of the problem include sedimenting filaments, dynamic catenaries, and towed strings. We also discuss equilibrium configurations of towed cables and other relevant problems with fixed boundary conditions. Special cases of the boundary value problem involve towing of neutrally buoyant cables and strings with pure axial flow between two fixed points.

Abstract:

Barnintervjuerna skedde i par, medan förskollärarna intervjuades enskilt.

Abstract:
Mestrado em Marketing
Museums face new challenges in XXI century. Their traditional role of guardians of the past is now questioned. Being forced to survive with lack of public funding, their functional role became obsolete. Museums start competing in the leisure arena, facing an aggressive competition. The educative experience is apparently no longer enough to increase audiences and retain old attendees, and museums start to understand the need to gain knowledge about their visitors' motivations, expectations, profiles, and lifestyles. This will allow the conception and implementation of marketing strategies in the difficult journey of creating attractiveness. The present research aims to contribute to knowledge about general motivations of visitors and demotivation of non-visitors, trying to determine lifestyle characteristics of each of these groups. The existent research about non-visitors is very scarce, with many undressed issues. We expect then to contribute to a better understanding of these potential museum's visitors. Moreover, considering that are also many people that tend to use the museums' surroundings (Slater 2007) and to not visit the exhibitions facilities, we also analyze this group characteristics. Findings indicate that those who go to museums search more educative experiences rather than escapism, fun or social interaction. This group of visitors is aesthetic appreciators and dependent from others. Regarding the museums' non-visitors, they were identified as mostly men, being more optimistic, sociable and achievement strivers than the museum's visitors. The "non-visitors" indicate as main reasons to not visit the exhibitions the fact that they don't even think about going there, but also reasons related with price and lack of time. They also indicate lack of interest as the main reason for not going to museums' surroundings. Findings from this study can be helpful for marketers to improve the image of museums while applying strategies in order to create attractiveness for non-visitors.

Abstract:

Playsam in Kalmar AB are world famous for their design of the toys they sell. Together with their CEO Carl Zedig the goal was to find a new product for the company.  The process has far from been linear, I started off in one direction, got rejected, turned another way and we finally decided to create a rocking horse in a De Stijl style. At the same time taking consideration of the demands from Playsam and myself.Playsam’s products are archetypes of ordinary objects around us such as the car or the aeroplane. The company mainly produces its toys in wood and the stylized shape together with the blank painted surface has become a hallmark for them.De Stijl, the Dutch art movement containing artists, designers and architects such as Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg and Gerrit Rietveld. Given inspiration for the rocking horse was Rietveld’s chair Red-Blue.I, Niklas Bonnevier, have a technical background and I am shaped by that. I rather draw with a ruler than by free hand, I often think mathematically instead of in free shapes. In my projects I often work with humour and playfulness, but with great seriousity as a base. The challenge in the project was to take in consideration the factors that would affect the shape and make decisions of what was the most essential to reach the goal. Compromises had to be done since all factors could not get the space they demanded. To renounce the thoughts of Rietveld in the making of the chair Red-Blue hurt in the designer soul but the main thing is that the product works for what it is meant to. Playsam also have to be allowed to say theirs if the result is supposed to be a commercial product in their range of products.

Stropky, Dave. "A viscous-inviscid interaction procedure." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28521.

Full text
Abstract:
A new viscous-inviscid semi-inverse (VISI) interaction method has been developed for predicting the flow field arising from a combination of inviscid potential flow and viscous flow. The technique involves matching the bounding velocities for each region by iteratively solving for the displacement thickness, δ*(x). The formula used to update δ*(x) after each iteration is generated by linearly perturbing the governing equations. Application of the VISI procedure to predict the unseparated flow past a flat plate gives excellent results, producing numerical solutions essentially indistinguishable from the appropriate analytical solution in less than 0.5 seconds of CPU time on an Amdahl 5850 computer. Application of the technique to external flow over a backward facing step (BFS) indicates that the region of strong interaction between the viscous and inviscid flows is much larger than reported for internal flow. Calculated reattachment lengths, LR, are clearly influenced by the thickness of the boundary layer upstream of the step, thicker boundary layers producing longer reattachment lengths. Good accuracy is achieved for a relatively coarse distribution of control points, and rapid convergence (< 2 seconds on the Amdahl 5850) usually occurs. Finite-difference predictions using an elliptic code (TEACH-T), modified at the outer boundary to simulate external flow, have also been made for the BFS, largely as a basis of comparison for the VISI results. Comparison of results for the two models (VISI and TEACH) gives similar trends in LR as a function of Rh and x₈, (a measure of the displacement thickness at the step). The values of LR obtained with the VISI method, however, are 15-80% longer than those from TEACH. Direct comparison with experiments is difficult because the experimental data does not clearly identify the effects of x₈, in the resulting values of LR. Trends appear to be the same for all computed and observed cases however. Disagreement between the VISI and TEACH results is thought to be due to a combination of neglecting velocities in the recirculation region in the VISI model, and numerical error and inaccurate boundary conditions in the TEACH code.

Abstract:
The domestic playing of videogames is examined through a series of extended dialogues with male adolescents. The research process was grounded in a theorisation of audience activity in communication studies which sees meanings emerging from the boys’ engagements with kinetic texts in terms of refigurative activity. This encapsulates reading, interpretation, and a cultural productivity whereby the kinetic text is returned to the everyday world, primarily through a relation of mimicry. The cultural fertility of videogames is traced through this mimicry to reveal a series of themes: a de-stabilising of the distinction between work and play spaces; the fragmentation of audiences of the small screen in the home through the establishment of gendered playspaces; the instilling of competitive relations within male community; and the melding of fantasy and discipline. An investigation of the significance of soundtrack to videogame play leads to the conclusion that in videogame playing a new cultural competency is taking shape in the form of a postmodern literacy, which lays stress on a continuous circumlocution, a destabilizing of narrative time, and middles rather than beginnings or endings. The findings contradict many ideas regarding videogame playing: that players are addicts; that videogame play is mindless; or that players are fickle. Videogame playing is implicated as an identity-making discursive project considered central to the business of being a male adolescent.

Abstract:
The village of Villagrande Strisaili, situated in central highlands of the island of Sardinia, Italy, is the subject of this ethnographic study of economic and cultural change. In Part I, a brief historical overview reveals that the pre-war society was largely subsistence based, with shepherding providing milk and cheese to sell on the market for cash. A strict division of labour and responsibilities by sex required mutual dependency of the male and female heads of a household, and supported local notions of gender equality. Part II examines the economic basis of and the restructuring of occupational opportunities in Villagrande today. Although shepherding and subsistence production continue to be important local activities, they are no longer the dominant forms of economic production and secure positions in government offices and institutions are now the preferred occupations. The profound cultural changes of recent decades is the focus of Part III. The notion of local culture, and of a distinctive local identity, is disappearing as cosmopolitan culture becomes localized through local acceptance. Contemporary villagers now create their sense of identity in terms of a wider reality, as defined by the powerful messages of the cosmopolitan system which are efficiently disseminated to villagers through the state educational system and the ubiquitous mass media. These cultural changes have unexpected consequences on the local culture and its reproduction to future generations.

Abstract:
This dissertation is concerned with studies of highly viscous Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids in bubble columns with, and without, draft tubes. The importance of the parameters influencing bubble column reactors is discussed with reference to previous work. The shapes and rise velocities of single bubbles in these liquids were studied in an 8.8cm diameter column, and the gas holdup, resulting from continuous bubbling of gas into this column, was also measured. Agreement between holdup predicted by the equation of Nicklin et al (1962), and experimental data in die present work and that of other workers is good. The limiting result of Dumitrescu (1943) was found to apply for fully developed slug flow in viscous non-Newtonian liquids in large columns. Gas holdup, in a 15cm diameter bubble column with a draft tube, consisted of large bubbles (slugs), which rapidly rose through the liquid, and very small bubbles, which accumulated in the liquid. These small bubbles were generated near the gas distributor and also at the liquid surface; less than 1% of the total gas flowrate into the system was converted into small bubbles for a highly viscous Newtonian liquid. The gas holdup due to small bubbles in non-Newtonian liquids was much less than that in Newtonian liquids. Large bubble velocities deduced from the bubble column measurements were consistent with the single bubble measurements. Liquid velocities in the 15cm column were measured by a neutrally buoyant flow follower; the liquid circulation rate was found to decrease with an increase in liquid viscosity. A model to predict the liquid circulation rate is outlined. The effect of scale-up on the gas holdup and liquid circulation rate was also studied experimentally in a 60cm square bubble column with a 30cm square draft tube. The bubble size distribution in this column was similar to the 15cm column but liquid velocities were higher, and gas holdup was smaller in the 60cm column.

Abstract:
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior
The traditional cartography aims to find points and sites themselves, often leaving aside other important elements to the location shown on the map. In this perspective, the cartography seems to be just a framework of point locations and places, strategic or not. The making of a map is typically linked to trained professionals for that which, in fact, is required when taken into account the scientific and the use of the techniques necessary for the accurate location. However, one must take into account that there are other ways of cartography that do not necessarily require location accuracy, but rather perception. The map, in addition to the location function is for social, anthropological, historical, biological or even geographic locations studies and also be the product of these studies. In this sense, create new methods and meanings to the cartography can lead to several problems found in the disciplinary field, it is necessary to open the doors to the outside, to the new. That´s what the construction of a new cartography need: insert new insights and perspectives about the forms of representation, without losing the essential character of a map of the location. Considering the strategic importance of the Itabaiana city for the state of Sergipe, we understand that a study involving the view that social groups have of the city is quite relevant. The work has as main objective to analyze the socioeconomic, cultural and environmental potential of Itabaiana from the social cartography produced by students of the campus of the Federal University of Sergipe in the municipality. Specific objectives were proposed: to identify UFS students views from socioeconomic, cultural and environmental Itabaiana city; interpret the social cartography produced by students; and present views of students on campus of the UFS in Itabaiana through social cartography in order to facilitate studies that emphasize the importance of social cartography to aid more effective public policies that take into account aspects often unnoticed by the look manager. It was found from the views of respondents that social cartography is a tool that enables reading of the perceptions of places, so as to contribute for the planning and better distribution and allocation of public resources, as well as it serves as a source of research for several areas of knowledge.

Abstract: A checkpoint is a state selected by a process during its execution. A global checkpoint is composed of one checkpoint from each process and it is consistent if it represents a snapshot of the computation that could have been taken by an external observer. The solution to many problems in distributed systems requires a sequence of consistent global checkpoints that describes the progress of a distributed computation. As the first contribution of this thesis, we present a set of algorithms to the construction of these sequences, called progressive views. Additionally, the analysis of properties during the progress of a distributed computation allowed us to verify that some assumptions made in the literature were false. Some checkpoint patterns present only on-line trackable rollback-dependencies among checkpoints. This property is enforced by taking a checkpoint immediately before the formation of a message pattern that can produce a non-trackable rollback-dependency. Theoretical and simulation studies have shown that, most often, the more restricted the pattern, the more efficient the protocol. The minimal characterization was supposed to be known and its implementation was supposed to require the processes of the computation to maintain and propagate O(n2) control information, where n is the number of processes in the computation. The quadratic complexity makes the protocol based on the minimal characterization less interesting than protocols based on wider characterizations, but with a linear complexity. The second contribution of this thesis is a proof that the characterization that was supposed to be minimal could be reduced. However, the complexity required by a protocol based on the new minimal characterization seemed to be also quadratic. The third contribution of this thesis is a protocol based on a slightly weaker condition than the minimal characterization, but with linear complexity and performance similar to the quadratic solution. As the last contribution, through a detailed analysis of the control information computed and transmitted during the progress of distributed computations, we have proposed a protocol that implements exactly the minimal characterization, but with a linear complexity

Abstract:
This study examines the Brazilian Transfer Pricing Regime from the standpoint of the different views that the issue may have. Initially the main characteristics are reported, for example, the arm\'s length principle, its history and application, thereafter it advocates the discipline within the OECD and comparative law. Following is addressed the Brazilian Transfer Pricing legislation, the position of jurisprudence facing with the customs valuation, and their relation with the double tax treaty. Once set up this introduction study scenario and its main outlines, are effectively analyzed the different views that the subject may have, especially with respect to the receipt of the arm\'s length principle, the adoption of fixed margins and the issue of hierarchical superiority of double tax treaties and domestic law, in case, transfer pricings law.
