Full textDigital technologies allow the preservation of heritage traces from witnesses of the past. Safeguarding an intangible heritage responds to various concerns, including that of allowing a mediation with the public. How can we ensure that such digital traces, staged with the help of instrumented or hybrid mediation devices, preserve the authenticity and strength of the initial testimony? Which mediations can allow the public to connect with content proposed to them? Is technological innovation always a guarantee of quality visitor experience? What is the place and function of emotions in their federating-links to witnesses of the past? The central question of the thesis can thus be formulated as follows: When considering an endangered intangible heritage, what solutions can enhance visitor experience? To answer these questions, an enactionist constructivist epistemology is mobilised along with survey methods, such as stimulated recall interviews (REMIND), are implemented. This theoretical and methodological framework provides access to visitor experience in its 12 cognitive, corporal and emotional dimensions. Developed primarily in the context of the memory of mining, the main results of this thesis identify the possibility of an experiential grammar of mediation devices. They underline the importance of the human facilitator in hybrid mediations. Finally, they open research perspectives regarding the technological conditions and the legal status of the digital witness, i.e. conditions that transform a living witness into a Grand Digital Witness

Psychological studies show that the context of a setting, in addition to facial expression and body language, lends important information that conditions our perception of people's emotions. However, context's processing in the case of automatic emotion recognition has not been explored in depth, partly due to the lack of sufficient data. In this thesis we present EMOTIC, a dataset of images of people in various natural scenarios annotated with their apparent emotion. The EMOTIC database combines two different types of emotion representation: (1) a set of 26 emotion categories, and (2) the continuous dimensions of valence, arousal and dominance. We also present a detailed statistical and algorithmic analysis of the dataset along with the annotators' agreement analysis. CNN models are trained using EMOTIC, combining a person's features with those of the setting (context). Our results not only show how the context of a setting contributes important information for automatically recognizing emotional states but also promote further research in this direction.

Full textIn this thesis we focus on the development of methods and techniques to infer affect from visual information. We focus on facial expression analysis since the face is one of the least occluded parts of the body and facial expressions are one of the most visible manifestations of affect. We explore the different psychological theories on affect and emotion, different ways to represent and classify emotions and the relationship between facial expressions and underlying emotions. We present the use of multiscale Gaussian derivatives as an image descriptor for head pose estimation, smile detection before using it for affect sensing. Principal Component Analysis is used for dimensionality reduction while Support Vector Machines are used for classification and regression. We are able to employ the same, simple and effective architecture for head pose estimation, smile detection and affect sensing. We also demonstrate that not only do multiscale Gaussian derivatives perform better than the popular Gabor Filters but are also computationally less expensive to compute. While performing these experiments we discovered that multiscale Gaussian derivatives do not provide an appropriately discriminative image description when the face is only partly illuminated. We overcome this problem by combining Gaussian derivatives with Local Binary Pattern (LBP) histograms. This combination helps us achieve state-of-the-art results for smile detection on the benchmark GENKI database which contains images of people in the "wild" collected from the internet. We use the same description method for face recognition on the CMU-PIE database and the challenging extended YaleB database and our results compare well with the state-of-the-art. In the case of face recognition we use metric learning for classification, adopting the Minkowski distance as the similarity measure. We find that L1 and L2 norms are not always the optimum distance metrics and the optimum is often an Lp norm where p is not an integer. Lastly we develop a multi-modal system for depression estimation with audio and video information as input. We use Local Binary Patterns -Three Orthogonal Planes (LBP-TOP) features to capture intra-facial movements in the videos and dense trajectories for macro movements such as the movement of the head and shoulders. These video features along with Low Level Descriptor (LLD) audio features are encoded using Fisher Vectors and finally a Support Vector Machine is used for regression. We discover that the LBP-TOP features encoded with Fisher Vectors alone are enough to outperform the baseline method on the Audio Visual Emotion Challenge (AVEC) 2014 database. We thereby present an effective technique for depression estimation which can be easily extended for other slowly varying aspects of emotions such as mood

Full textThis study aims to contribute to the conceptual development of consumer behaviour in wine tourism area by bringing new discussion and empirical evidences. For this, a literature review of the main concepts was conducted in order to develop and support a conceptual model. This model was subsequently validated and empirically tested, and a hypothetical relationship between constructs was established: involvement (personal involvement and wine product involvement), destination emotions and place attachment (place identity and place dependence). This is, so far, the first study that analyses the combined interaction of all these constructs. This research was undertaken in the framework of wine tourism, namely the measurement of the wine tourist behavior after visiting the Porto wine cellars. Methodologically, the first chapter is a qualitative exploratory study that performed a content analysis on the key constructs (involvement and emotions), allowing a better understanding of how they can be defined, and the main dimensions underlying each one of them. The second chapter consisted of a conceptual approach, which focused on the clarification of the definition of wine tourism, and the wine tourist behaviour in particular. It also explored the possible relations between constructs (involvement, destination emotions, place attachment and behavioural intentions), postulating the key preposition that stems from their interaction. In the third chapter, a quantitative research was used, using a personal intercept survey in the Porto wine cellars to validate and to give empirical evidences about the behaviour of the Porto wine cellar visitor. The multilevel analysis of the proposed structural model was made using the SmartPLS software, allowing the confirmation of all the proposed hypotheses. In the first chapter, the findings provided a theoretical support of the relevance of involvement and emotions constructs in the field of tourism. The content analysis produced insights based on concepts and definitions of these two constructs on a more holistic perspective. In the second chapter, the findings sustain the special interest in consumer behaviour in wine tourism, and it stated a set of five prepositions, where the main constructs are interlinked. In the third chapter, the empirical results indicated that wine tourists’ personal involvement and their wine product involvement have a significant influence (and a direct effect) on destination emotions and place attachment, driving their behavioural intentions. The study had direct implications (analysis and evaluation of the wine tourist travel behaviour and wine tourist profile) for the Porto wine cellars. The results led to practical implications and suggestions for wine tourism managers.

Schall, David M. "Two Case Studies of the Contribution of Emotional Intelligence, Communication Style, Job Competency, Vision, and Ethics to Constituent Buy-In for Leaders." Thesis, Lindenwood University, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10027097.
Full textThe purpose of this study was to investigate the similarities and dissimilarities of leadership traits that create leader buy-in for an educational leader and a football coach; specifically, emotional intelligence, communication style, job competency, vision, and ethics, between an educational leader and a sports coach. The rationale of this study was to create recent literature that provided insight for leaders in multiple areas on how to transfer leadership skills to establish common goals and missions within their organizations.
Data was collected using a survey completed by 154 volunteer participants, along with interviews of 12 volunteer participants. A focus group of four volunteer participants was completed as well. The researcher also interviewed the leaders themselves to gain their own perspective of their leadership characteristics and ability to achieve constituent buy-in.
The survey results indicated at least 87%, and in many cases, over 90%, of constituents either strongly agree or mildly agree that his or her leader maintained control of his emotions (emotional intelligence), had an accurate understanding of his own strengths and weaknesses (emotional intelligence), communicated effectively (communication style), understood the skills and responsibilities needed to do his job effectively (job competency), understood the follower’s responsibilities and role within the organization (job competency), successfully communicated the vision of the organization (vision), and displayed ethical behavior (ethics) throughout the course of his job. The interviews and focus group provided anecdotes and personal testimony to support the results of the survey.
The most prevailing themes that emerged from the data related to creating constituent buy-in fell under Emotional Intelligence; specifically, relationship building and making a personal connection. To that end, participants in both groups stated that the leader made them feel ‘valuable,’ ‘important,’’ ‘truly knew’ them and ‘cared about them’ as much in a personal way, if not more than in a professional way. Participants indicated the leaders were also good in the other four areas as well. Statements made regarding their communication style were ‘inspiring’ and ‘clear’ while data from participant responses about job competency were ‘a good coach’ and an ‘ability to make tough decisions.’ Responses about vision were consistent in both groups in that a larger percentage of participants noted they could ‘see” the direction the organization was going because of how the leader described it and they wanted to be a part of fulfilling it. Both leaders rated high in ethics as well.

Full textAnxiety and depression are characterized by an altered deployment of attentional resources particularly to visual emotional information. Also, these symptomatologies manifest atypical autonomic variations in response to emotional stimuli. We therefore sought to establish links between the deployment of attention and autonomic reactivity to emotion in order to better understand the mechanisms implicated in anxiety and depression. As a result, our experimental programming implemented an integrated approach to study the deployment of attention to emotional scenes. These were presented in central vision (CV) and peripheral vision (PV) or during paradigms allowing the visualization of emotional image pairs, in individuals with pre-clinical level of anxiety and depression. We then evaluated the attentional and autonomic consequences of a modified attention deployment procedure.First, we show that anxiety is associated with hyperreactivity to emotion and hypervigilance in PV. Additionally, anxiety leads to an increased response bias for unpleasant information in PV. Also, depression is associated with reduced responsiveness to emotional information and more particularly to pleasant information. Following levels of depression, a related focalization to emotional images was observed when presented in the central vision. Secondly, we were able to establish that the autonomic reactivity to emotion can be modulated by the deployment of attention towards emotion and by depressive symptomatology. Indeed, we observe an association between autonomic reactivity and attentional bias to pleasant information on the one hand, and to depressive symptomatology on the other. Finally, a modulation of autonomic reactivity was observed following the use of an attention modification procedure. This modification is characterized by a reduction in sympathetic activity and an increase in parasympathetic activity in response to emotional stimulation.Overall, presented results provide experimental arguments in favor of the concomitant measurements of attentional and autonomic processes in order to better define the distinction between anxious and depressive symptoms. The results also show the contribution of changes in attentional deployment towards emotional information in the visual space. Indeed, their impact may be relevant for acting on both attentional and autonomic aspects in individuals with pre-clinical manifestations of anxiety and depression. Our results thus open up encouraging perspectives on the personalization of behavioral techniques used in anxiety and depression, particularly in the context of attentional deployment in visual space

Full textThe increase in white-collar crimes has become a common feature around the globe and
its impact has left many conglomerates despaired affecting businesses, economies,
employees and families that are somehow related to these organizations. The famous
money laundering and accounting scandals such as; Parmalat, Adelphia, Yukos Oil
Company, Qwest Communications International, Tyco, and WorldCom, are true bitter
realities of the corporate world. The dilemma is costing enterprises great amounts of
money to set the image right that keeps on getting wrong. People are hired on loads of
relevant work experience with excellent academic backgrounds, yet the strain of
dishonesty lurks within the individual worker of an organization.
The purpose of the research is to investigate the dismal realities that occur within the
recruiters’ conscious or subconscious mind during a recruitment and selection process
(the gateway to an organization). Our objective is to identify the dimensions of enterprise
hypocrisy and to understand and explain the scenarios and the ways professionals are
trying to cope with the matter.
The recruiters see the white collar crimes as a potential rising concern and are using
personality test such as the OPQ 32 (Occupational Personality Questionnaire) together
with other methods (interviews, references, intuition, education, etc.) in hiring the right
candidate for the job, which hopefully would be potentially harmless to the organization.
The findings are not based on a systematic comparative study and can therefore only be
interpreted as indicative.

Full textThe thesis describes the results of the research and development of new technologies based on artificial intelligence techniques, able to achieve an empathic interaction and an emotional connection between man and "the machines" in order to improve comfort and safety on board of yachts. This interaction is achieved through the recognition of emotions and behaviors and the following activation of all those multimedia devices available in the environment on board, which are adapted to the mood of the subject inside the room. The prototype system developed during the three years of PhD is now able to manage multimedia content (e.g. music tracks, videos played on LED screens) and light scenarios, based on the user's emotion, recognized by facial expressions taken from any camera installed inside the space. In order to make the interaction adaptive, the developed system implements Deep Learning algorithms to recognize the identity of the users on board (Facial Recognition), the degree of attention of the commander (Gaze Detection and Drowsiness) and the objects with which he interacts (phone, earphones, etc.). This information is processed within the system to identify any situations of risk to the safety of people on board and to monitor the entire environment. The application of these technologies, in this domain that is always open to the introduction of the latest innovations on board, opens up several research challenges.

The origin of the eleven basic color terms identified in the literature is still debated, but may be more perceptive for the unique colors black, white, red, green, yellow and blue, and linked to cultural and linguistic consensus for orange, brown, purple and grey. Color may also have an emotional dimension, as denotes for example the expression “seeing red”. In this work, a first study investigated the conceptual organization of the 11 basic color terms. Participants had to provide proximity levels for each two-by-two pairs of the terms. Results showed that the conceptual color space is correlated to the perceptual color space for all unique colors but yellow. Other basic colors were organized based on perceptive factors, and also cultural ones, in relation to their association with certain concepts or semantic knowledge. A second study focalized on familiarity and emotional valence of basic and non-basic colors presented as words or as patches. Familiarity and arousal were higher for basic colors presented as words, which may be explained by a more accessible conceptualization than for non-basic colors and patches. Measures of emotional valence and associations with the six basic emotions for 33 color words and 33 patches, basic and non-basic, are provided as a potential tool for future research. A third study investigated a medieval pigment with a flat reflectance spectrum, but for which pairings and denominations confirmed an illusory blue for half of observers. A Stroop task was adapted to test perceptive and semantic effects on the presence of this illusion. Congruency effects were obtained upon association of this pigment as much with the word grey as with the word blue. Results showed (a) an anchoring of responses to the ambiguous hue biased towards the most resembling available category, testifying to the elasticity of color representation, and (b) that the congruence effect in the Stroop task also depended on perceptive factors, such as a color contrast created by manipulating background color during the task. On the whole, these results bring new elements specifying the interaction of perceptive and psycholinguistic processing in the interpretation of the colored environment

Dark tourism, or visiting sites or attractions associated with death, disaster and tragedy is not a new phenomenon, as long as people are been able to visit such places and events. Nevertheless, in our general idea, it is impossible to connect leisure with dark side, because the former is often related to happy or exhilarating feeling while the latter is akin to horrific or gloomy feeling, especially in the Far-East nations; we palpably avoid mentioning about demise or disaster, sometimes we even repress it. As a result, the affiliated archives are limited so far; respectively some related researches are presented in recent years. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to address this gap in the literature. This study will utilize Plutchik’s theory of emotional wheel and emotional solid to investigate visitors’ feeling during visiting Martyrs’ Shrine. Simultaneously, we further explore the mediating effects i.e. the appeal of dark tourism aligned with the intention of tourist participating in the unconventional itinerary, in explicit, on the emotional level. Approach-wise, a multilateral scheme was conducted in which SAS 9.2 was being maneuvered as a statistical tool in addition to the descriptive statistics, Pearson''s correlation coefficient analysis, reliability analysis, t-test and one-way ANOVA were executed in attempt to scrutinize the amassed data. Eventually, the multiple regression analysis corroborated the mediating functionality extracted from dark attractions. Meanwhile, a systematic sampling was adopted via survey;330 visitors were being sampled with a totality of 306 valid questionnaires were substantiated;gender-wise, there are 136 males and 170 females amid the respondents. The results of this study unseal dual revelations: (1) Quantitative analysis indicates that significant deviations were found between respondents’ socioeconomic background and how their characteristics related to dark tourism. (2) In terms of revisiting, happy and expectation are deemed the predominant mediators, while dark attractions are particularly maneuvered through the woeful sentiments, such as sadness. In brief, this study prove that positive feeling is not the solely response visitors’ are intended to receive; people will be more impressed about the sites when negating visceral such as fear or sadness. Therefore, it worth to develop dark tourism spots in the cause of fulfilling some visitor’s wishes to feel differently, and we should also construct the literature of dark tourism in order to fit the Far-East nations.

This thesis mainly researches that what I get from the scenery of Gongliao, and I try to propose that real and unreal opinions about the physical image. With the experience of my life, I display the self-value and write the life journal by the drawing creation. The thesis presents the creation motive. It begins from making a self-examination and taking nature as foundation to regard the life course approach. Then, the creative theory talks about the author’s creating idea, the Western landscape painting evolutions and as well as to a person to annotation of the nature. The author proposes another discussion about nature. It transforms the connotation of the Western art history, the Western representative artist and Taiwan early time painter into the self-creation way. Background and element in the theme includes creation essential factor and how to express the creator subjective and objective the feeling. The creative content, the form, the technique, and the material show what I use in the drawing process. Finally, In the part of work solution, it displays real paintings with the combination of each kind of element to verify that was presented previously. In recent years, one of the purposes that people go out for traveling is visit the graveyards of the celebrities or the death sites. The cemetery tourism is involved with respect and admiration for the death. The cemetery tourism is respective and serious; meanwhile, it shows reminiscent emotion to the death. Take Hollywood Walk of Fame for example; it becomes hot cemetery tourism spot by reminding people of those historical celebrities. In Taiwan, the cemetery tourism is not easy to become popular because of the awe to the death. However, due to the restriction-lifted on mainland tourists, cemetery tourism (The Culture Resort of The Jiang and Teresa Teng Memorial Park…etc.) attracts lot of tourists. So, it becomes an important part in tourism developing by local governments. The study is on tourists’side and focuses on the effect of reminiscence is related with the surrounding setting, reminiscent stuff, and visiting motive. Also, to understand that if the tourists are willing to visit again will be affected by the reminiscence. The study area is Yun Garden in Jinshan,Taipei. There are lot of fans from all over the world visit her graveyard and recall the young-died star together on her anniversary of death every year. Also, it attracts numbers of visitors in holidays, and that’s why it becomes the most well-know spot among cemetery tourism in Taiwan. Questionnaire method is mainly used in the study. There are 241 usable questionnaires which filled by the tourists in Yun Garden. SEM is chosen as the data analysis to verify the pattern and assumption of the study. Find full textVisitors’ expectations of museums in the modern world consist of both utilitarian and hedonic aspects. Given visitors’ diverse expectations and demands, traditional museums have taken actions to attract more visitors. Taking advantage of new technologies is the current action and trend in the museum industry. The emergence of digital museums is the reflection of this tendency, which use digital technologies such as projectors, surrounded sound, ambient lights, and multisensory cues to present a virtual environment. In the virtual environment, emotional state and sense of presence are considered to be useful to provide a more engaging experience. Therefore, this research empirically investigated digital museum visitor experience perceptions and the influence of emotional state and sense of presence on experience perceptions. The different impact of multisensory cues on experience and the relative mediation effect were also examined.
Data were collected with a scenario-based online survey conducted through Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk). A split-sample approach with a total of 382 respondents was used for analysis. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were used to explore visitor experience perceptions of the digital museum. Structural equation modeling was used to discover the impact of emotional state and sense of presence. One-way analysis of variance was used to compare the difference in impact of multisensory cues on overall visitor experience. This research also employed the PROCESS macro in SPSS for demonstrating the mediating effect of emotional state and sense of presence through the impact of multisensory cues on overall visitor experience. The findings of this study revealed three experience perceptions—respectively, joviality, personal escapism, and localness experiences—of digital museums. Also, this research presented the positive effect of emotional state on joviality experience and negative effect of emotional state on localness experience. In addition, a notable positive impact of sense of presence on joviality, personal escapism, and localness experience perceptions was found. No significant effect of emotional state on personal escapism was found in this research. Moreover, visual and auditory cues together were confirmed as the most powerful indicator for triggering the greatest experience level. The impact was found to be valid due to the mediating role of emotional state and sense of presence.
This research contributed theoretically and practically to museum literature and experience research. Theoretical implications were discussed to indicate this research as the framework to measure digital museum visitor experience based on the proposed three-factor structure. Practical implications were provided for museum managers. Limitations and future research were discussed.

Full textLimited research concerning a child's association between emotion and color is available, both in terms of the amount of research studies done as well as the generalization of the results for the purposes of the five year-old. This study's aim was to explore the individual, unique, symbolic meaning between the experiencing of emotion and color of the five year-old. Color was used as an expedient to facilitate the identification of emotion. The test sample consisted out of five, five year-old Afrikaans speaking children. The researcher developed a technique and used it to explore the above. The results of this study showed that the associations that five year-olds draw between emotions and color can't be generalized. The study further showed that color can be very helpful in the identification process of emotions when working with the five year-old child. The results of this study were compared to relevant previous research results and at the end the researcher made certain recommendations for further research concerning the subject.
