Abstract:

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Mission and vision statements are concepts that are often discussed at meetings where companies discuss and debate whether or not to implement them to ensure sustained profitability or increase the motivation of employees. This, however, is a misconception in the business world since mission and vision statements do not lead to instantaneous success. Mission and vision statements are strategic tools to help organisations to focus on what they are good at and what they stand for. Mission statements help an organisation to identify which current direction the organisation should be taking, whereas a vision statement helps an organisation to identify where it wants to be in the future. A mission and vision statement provides a goal towards which the people of the company can work so that it can be profitable and endure lasting success. This goal binds the workers of an organisation, resulting in people that are happy since they know what the organisation's core purpose is. They key importance of these statements is that they provide guidance of strategic and day-ta-day operational decision-making. Companies that enjoy enduring success have core values and a core purpose that remain fixed, while their business strategies and practices endlessly adapt to a changing world. The dynamics of preserving the core while stimulating progress is the reason that companies such as Hewlett Packard, 3M, Merck, Sony and Nordstrom became elite institutions able to renew themselves. It is important to realise is that there is no documented proof that organisations that do not have these mission and vision statements are less successful than those that do have them. The dynamic of the concepts developed in Built to Last, i.e. preserving the core/stimulate the progress should be kept in mind. Neither vision nor mission statements are the primary engines of enduring great companies, and bear in mind that visions simply provide the guiding context for bringing the this dynamic to life.

This work examines the purpose, construction, and identification of stakeholders in organizational vision and mission statements. This work also reviews differing views on the governing objectives of publicly held companies and concludes that the objective of maximizing shareholder value, while acting responsibly toward all the other stakeholders, provides the best opportunity for providing long-term value to all The Eastman Chemical Company vision, "to be the world's preferred chemical company", and the mission, ''to create superior value for customers, employees, investors, suppliers, and publics", are closely examined. Value creation, from each stakeholder's point of view, is evaluated, including the view of the employee investor. At Eastman, all employees have some equity ownership in the company. The thesis concludes that the Eastman vision and mission are both realistic and achievable, albeit difficult. Success will depend on effectively aligning the decisions and actions of the workforce to the vision and mission. Creating value for the various stakeholders requires that the value drivers for each is understood and that tensions among stakeholders be anticipated and managed. The ability to pick up on and act on "early warning signals" that threaten the firm's core capabilities, its competitiveness, and stakeholder satisfaction are critical for success.

Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
Vision and mission statements are believed to play an important role in organisations in their quest to provide clear and concise guidance to their ambitions and purpose. This is especially true for not-for profit organisations as they do not have a ‘bottom-line’ to drive performances and other strategic decisions. Although several studies have been conducted on the effect of effective vision and mission statements on organisations, there is no evidence of a study having been conducted on secondary schools in the Helderberg area, to the best of the researcher’s knowledge. The aim of this study was to explore the extent to which the vision and mission statements are communicated and used within the two secondary schools as part of their decision making processes, especially by the principals of these schools. In order to sufficiently address the implementation, communication and integration of the vision and mission statements in the secondary schools, the following research questions were formulated: • What is the level to which the school’s mission and vision statements are used by its principals to guide decision-making processes and the setting of goals and ambitions? • How well are the school’s mission and vision statements communicated to – and understood by its stakeholders? • How to properly create and integrate the school’s vision and mission statements in order to ensure improved and sustainable academic performances This study explores the levels of communication of the vision and mission statements most notably by the principals to the rest of the school’s stakeholders and the integration of these statements into the daily decision making processes. Furthermore, the study investigates the review process of these statements and whether the principals embody the values and visions of their respective schools. From the analysis of the findings, it was clear that these statements are still largely unknown within the two schools, as only 54% of the correspondents have ever seen these statements. The views were varied about whether principals have communicated the vision and mission statements to the stakeholders of the schools. According to Sherman (2001: 24) the ability to clearly and concisely communicate the vision and mission of the organisation is a critical characteristic of leadership. The study also concluded that the statements appeared to not have been fully understood, embodied and communicated by both the principals interviewed. The lack of a clear strategy and the focus on solving crisis issues at the schools were evident during the interviews with both principals. This research findings were analysed, concluded and recommendations made on the factors that could assist the establishment, communication and integration of the vision and mission statements within secondary schools within the Helderberg area.

Abstract:
This study examines the articulated vision of a new Catholic primary school in order to describe and assess its developing organisational culture. The following questions provide the major focus of the study: I How and to what extent does the Vision Statement describe the developing Catholic school culture at St Clare of Assisi Primary School? 2. What are the common beliefs and values underlying the Vision Statement at St Clare of Assisi Primary School? A review of the literature reveals that many educational researchers stress the importance of schools developing a strong, coordinated, cohesive and positive culture. The need for this culture to be based on a clearly articulated vision, embodying shared values and beliefs is also indicated and this provides the rationale for the study. A number of frameworks for school culture are examined and adapted to develop a conceptual framework for the study. The resulting Model for Developing Catholic School Culture provides a structure which enables collected data to be sorted and analysed, so that the research questions can be addressed. This study utilises the methodology of ethnographic research. Data collection strategies include participant observation, interviews, surveys, and other sources including school records and documents, photographs, artefacts and memorabilia. The findings are organised under five headings, each of which represents a belief articulated in the school's Vision Statement. These beliefs are examined to see how they are enacted verbally, visually and behaviourally by the school community Conclusions are drawn as to the relevance of the Vision Statement to the school community Other significant values and beliefs evident from an examination of the data are also identified The study concludes that the Vision Statement effectively describes the developing culture of the school for there is congruence between its beliefs and actions. What emerges of particular significance from this study is the importance of a school community articulating a shared vision. A school's Vision Statement serves a dual purpose It is the filter which allows the shared beliefs and values of the school community to be articulated, while at the same time serving as a scaffold for checking if these shared beliefs and values are being enacted by the community.

Abstract:
Trinity Christian School is a Christian parent controlled school which was established in 1980 with eleven students and one teacher. The current enrolment of the school is some six hundred and forty students. In 1991 the Trinity Christian School Vision Statement was written. This 'Vision Statement' gives an outline of the direction Trinity Christian School should be heading. It also gives a brief outline of the purpose for the school's existence. At the present time Trinity Christian School is beginning to expand into a school of some seven hundred and eighty students and is also undergoing a process of whole school review. It is therefore a significant time in which to study how the Trinity Christian School Vision Statement is being implemented within the school, particularly, within the Secondary section of the school. The focus of this study is to observe what if any, a selection of secondary teachers at Trinity Christian School are including in the classroom which would reflect the Trinity Christian School Vision Statement. In particular, to look for the inclusion of a Christian perspective as is defined in the Vision statement'. To undertake this study a naturalistic inquiry methodology was selected in which a range of field study techniques were adopted, especially from the field of ethnography. A range of data was collected from the following sources: curriculum statements; the Christian perspectives outline; teaching programs; lesson observations; teacher interviews; student interviews; student workbooks; and teaching resources. From the data collected for this study there is much evidence to demonstrate the teachers' inclusion of the Christian perspective in the classroom at Trinity Christian School. The manner in which this is included varies between cases, much as the teaching style of each individual teacher varies. Teachers' Inclusion Of The Christian Perspective In The Classroom How the Christian perspective is included also varies according to the subject and the unit being taught. For instance, to include a Christian perspective in the teaching of the Theories of Creation and Evolution' in Science is of course going to be far easier than in the teaching of 'Products and Factors' in Mathematics. A key implication for Trinity Christian School, is that the consistency of the documentation could be improved. If this was done, then a greater inclusion of the Christian perspective in the classroom could be provided to challenge the students more than at present. This could be achieved if the Christian perspective were incorporated in many more aspects of the classroom than was observed in this study. In this way the students would have modelled to them the Christian way to live in many more of the situations which arise in the classroom.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, the strategic planning process in a family owned firm of Saudi Arabia will be discussed. The main aim is to develop a comprehensive model of strategic planning, specific and customized to the family businesses of Saudi Arabia. The model will encompass all the factors that are unique to the Saudi Arabian family businesses, such as the family culture of Saudi business families, the interfamily dynamics that shape the strategic approach of the family and the unique market conditions or the external environment that influences the strategic planning process of family owned firms in Saudi Arabia. The literature review extensively covers the topic of strategic planning, family business dynamics and major salient features of family business described by various authors. The literature review also discusses the models of family business that define the interaction of various elements in family owned firms, their drawbacks and the gaps in applicability of these documented models to family businesses in general and specificallyt o Saudi Arabian family businessesT. he literaturer eview revealst hat there is no comprehensivem odel of strategicp lanning processf or the family owned firms that highlight all the critical factors that shape the strategic planning process and also documents uccessfufli rms that haveb enefitedf rom thesem odels. Based on an extensive survey of the family owned firms of Saudi Arabia and statistical analysis of various unique features of such firms, the most critical factors that play a major role in strategy formulation could be isolated. These critical factors helped in designing the strategic planning model for the family owned firms of Saudi Arabia. The model was practically implemented and validated in 10 family businesses of the kingdom and results confirm the applicability of this model. The model formulation and validation in the family firms of Saudi Arabia, forms the main focus of this dissertation.

Abstract:
D.Ed.
Schools have to provide quality education and maintain appropriate educational standards. Over and above that, schools have to deliver acceptable results. That will be the hallmark of schools being effective. Again, modem day schools can no longer be managed on an old fashioned way like in the past. School conditions have changed and keep on altering. Effectiveness and ineffectiveness could result from the changed teaching and learning environment. The main focus of this study is to investigate how public secondary schools in the Northern Province could be assisted to overcome ineffectiveness through the employment of vision and mission statements. Attention is placed on how clearly formulated vision and mission statements could be utilized to create effective schools. The main research question which has been driving the entire study is: What is the role and importance of clearly formulated vision and mission statements in developing and promoting school effectiveness in schools in the Northern Province? What are the perceptions of educators (principals and teachers) and parents with regard to the development and implementation of vision and mission statement in their schools? As already stated, the principal focus of the research is to address the problem of ineffectiveness as witnessed by some public secondary schools. The problem of ineffectiveness by schools is investigated from the point of view of vision and mission statements. This therefore, suggests that vision and mission statement have to be comprehended as interventionist strategy to assist ineffective schools to replace ineffectiveness with effectiveness. Vision and mission statements are located within a school as a learning organization. The reason for this is that in a learning organization every member feels an urge and drive to contribute his or her talent to the development of school as an organization. Again, in a school setting, these statements need to be approached as part of the school's comprehensive strategic plan. It is in that way that vision and mission statements could impact the school's organization structure, management process, management strategy, innovative ideas, values and culture. This will enable these statements to facilitate the occurrence of quality teaching and learning in schools.

Abstract:
The importance of vision and mission statements is well documented. An increasing number of authors argue that strategies in an organisation have a major impact on its performance relative to its peers (Hill & Jones, 2001:4; Thompson & Strickland, 1996:2). Raric and Vitton found that organisations with a formalised mission statement have double the average return on shareholders’ equity than those organisations without formalised mission statements. However, the extent of manager and employee involvement in developing vision and mission statements can make a difference in business success (David, 2001:57). Most organisations develop both a mission and a vision statement. There is a subtle difference between the two that should not be confused, this will be qualified in this study. The purpose of such statements is, among others, to give the customer and other stakeholders an overview of the identity of the organisation in terms of who they are, what they do and where they are headed (Thompson & Strickland, 1996:22). It implies a formal commitment by the organisation to its stakeholders, sending out the message that its strategies will be formulated with the claims of its stakeholders in mind (Hill & Jones, 2001:45). It is often found that these expectations are not realised. The customer is frequently left with the perception that employees are unaware of the key values and the overall direction the organisation is taking. This study will focus on Flight Centre Limited (South Africa) to determine the extent of commitment of employees to the strategic vision of the organisation.

This thesis is to record the conception and the development of my artwork during the past three years (2002~2004). I attempted to piece together the pictures of my mental world with describing the mental images that exist in my mind that are private and real. There are two main parts in this thesis. One part is to explore the theoretical groundwork about my creative idea; the other is to express my creative thought by assaying the meaning of symbols in my work. In the second chapter, I have explored the foundation of my creative thought. Then, I contrasted them between the definition of “mental vision”, Symbolism, the foundation of psychology of my work and the course of my creation. In the third chapter, I introduced the start of my creative thought that is about my fancy of inner space and mental world, and then I expanded in my opinions and my work. By assaying the objects in picture, I explained about symbol language of my work. In the fourth chapter, I expressed the idea, analysis and the meanings of the symbols individually. Finally, the chapter five is the progress of my creation. I reviewed from formulating the standpoint of myself and the reflection of my works, and my wish as for my life long of creation.

My creation is to explore living space, describe daily basis, and express and reflect how you feel based on personal observations and receiving environments. It was wonderful to be able to visualize numerous animation characters through your imagination and review life experience , in order to further analyze the process of forming the creation (of art). However, we try to make a hypothesis on the differences in human emotions “before” and “after” the play, and the possibilities of mood after the play, in order to present this thesis through “playing” and “imagination” paradise. Then, we project the change into our works. The first chapter will discuss the background, statement of purpose, and category of the research, and then discuss the factors regarding personal intent on production and styles. The second chapter will analyze the relation between contemporary artists and their own creations. I will also probe into the process of the straight out creation and internal discussion. Through using childhood memory image and experiences in the playground, such as stuff animals, entertaining materials, video games consoles, and animations as the main inspiration of art creation. The third chapter is based on personal creation. It will analyze the progress of the production from 2005 through 2010. The forth chapter will present the progress of creation, thinking, exhibition , and dialogue, then we will be able to discuss its own formation. The fifth chapter will organize the internal thoughts and external relation of the works, in order to practice the independency of the creation.

The creativity of “Print- the vision of the women”,which is based on the creator’s self viewing experience and used by Host-guest translocation, concerns the attentive and touching womens’ images.By avoiding the attitude of the opposive dualization between the genders, passiveness and activeness, host and guest; the creator attempts to discoevr the womens’ subjectivity through the philosophy of seeing and being seen. Sorting out the development of Taiwanese feminism’s history, it spotlights in-creasingly on Taiwanese mordern womens’ art; moreover, it has been aware of that the Feminism is a concept of which can be inherited and be passed on; and the mordern women are practicing their subjectivity in their life’s fields lately. Therefore, people look for the texts from the Visual Arts that the female subjectivity can be dipicted, and these texts also possess the concern to the cultural environments. Kibuuka, Hudson Eddie. "Mission statement and management of private tertiary religious institutions in Eastern and Southern Africa." 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/17085.

Full text
Abstract:
The region of Eastern and Southern Africa has recently experienced an unprecedented development of private tertiary institutions. Most of these institutions are established by religious organisations which, since the inception of education, have been involved in operating educational institutions of lower levels. Although referred to as private institutions, which by definition would imply funding other than the government sources, these private institutions find themselves, at times requesting the government to fund their development as well as their operations. This study sought to investigate if these private religious institutions have unique raison d'etre expressed in the form of mission statements. The study also investigated the nature of their management and the management structures in practice. The literature reviewed indicated that private religious institutions have a unique mission based on their basic concept of education and their world view. They seek to pursue and inculcate specific values. Operating in a competitive environment, however, in which their competitors do receive funding from the government makes the private institutions vulnerable to hardships. The study was conducted using qualitative research approach in three countries, namely Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe; involving all degree granting recognised private religious institutions in the sample and focussing on the management. The respondents were chosen by elite purposive and snowball sampling. The main data collection method was the interview. However, document analysis, observations, and a questionnaire were also used. The findings from the data indicate that private religious institutions have unique missions although they are, at times, not expressed in the form of mission statements. As a result some of the stakeholders, including those involved in management, don't get to know what their institutions' missions are. The study concludes by emphasising the development of clear mission statements involving the stakeholders in the process and having the mission statements widely disseminated. It is also recommended that training in management is important for the managers of the institutions at the various levels. A model of management is proposed for streamlining the management of the institutions considering the requirements of the national governments as well as those of the religious proprietors.

Abstract This article is a discussion and sorting of my creation from 2014 to 2017. Based on the personal experience, I combine the sense of the female, the background of the family, the social characteristic of the labor to weave the origin background of the creation. Also with some special feeling and the interest of the media of my creation, I internalized my different life experience by some complicated operations of media and materials. Through the visual observation and tactile of the glue color, the life perception can be presented. Additionally, I will use ‘the visual touch copies from daily life’ to define the characteristic of my series of my creation. The first chapter ‘Introduction’ is a retrospection of my early creation, which discuss the motivation, range and the method and frame of the research. Through the research of the stress experience of the daily life, family and emotion, the impact to the creation will be examined. The second chapter ‘the born of the theme’ is try to have a deeper understanding of my own creation from an academic perspective. With sorting some relational theory and the discussing of the different artist style, I build a connection between the creating and the theory. In the first section, through the discussion of the life consciousness and the creating consciousness, it shows the inevitability that the creation comes from the life. In addition, the second section ‘Female book’ is an explore of the style of the creation and the reasons why the author chose that creating method. Lastly, the third section will examine the artist creation from the perspective of media and materials, which not only means media and materials but also the metaphor and the characteristic. Furthermore, the third chapter ‘Never spoken’ is a sorting of the content, style and skills of my creating. The first section is a retrospection of life experience and living situation from the perspective of daughter, employee and creator. This thesis although is set out with the law standpoint, however therefore the two subjects are original to the economy development, belonging to accounting's realm up one important link, therefore, if the law standard isn't enough, then give complement through accounting's profession. The not-an-arm's operations of affiliated enterprise include not- an-arm's transactions and disadvantageous operation. What is the not- an-arm's transactions? What is the disadvantageous operation? This thesis doesn't learn to explain the law's meanings from the text right- eousness, and the accounting practices is in common use of the bargain type replace, and illustrate with example, so that, can make the reader understand easily not only and more, don't become besides empty. Press affiliated enterprise particularly chapter in order to develop whole economic benefit, the lawmaking allows controlling-company to make sub- ordination-company for be unsuited the not-an-arm's transactions and the disadvantageous operation. However, in order to avoid the control share- holder false by this legality is unsuited to the not-an-arm's transactions and the disadvantageous operation, with go a benefit to transport or steal out the enterprise's property, so that, the lawmaking rules and reg- ulations how prevent by illegal act got by these from, is this thesis's first topic. And the defensive system, besides “corporate governance” enhances, must rely on company-law, security-trade-law, and criminal-law all together. The information disclosure of affiliated enterprise include mainly should draw up from subordination-company of relation written report and should draw up from controlling-company of the consolidated financial statement, this is the thesis the second topic. In the aspect of the information disclosure of affiliated enterprise, the first, should con- junction above transaction between affiliated enterprise, adopt "trans- fer pricing system” to measure transaction between affiliated enterprise whether for be not-an-arm's-length transactions or not, and adopt "management judgment principle” to judge whether have disadvantageous operation to subordination-company. In the meantime, should impose sub- ordination-company record all transaction between affiliated enter- prise, and keep important management data entirely, think from sub- ordination-company's few shareholders and creditor on the litigation easily with offer as proof to attain the purpose of lawmaking protection subordination-company's few shareholders and creditor. USA's “ENRON case” and Taiwan's “BO DAR case” etc., is make use of above-mentioned of skill with cover up the long-term deficiency or illegal act. How to revise legal standard and draw up strict accounting standard to prevent manipulate income is another an important topic we will face. Affiliated enterprise legal theory is basically to observe from “economic substance relation”. Include the identification of control- ling-subordination relation, the identification of not-an-arm's transac- tions, and draw-up the consolidated financial statement etc. all should apply to “emphasize economic substance relation, ignore legal form”. Abstract:
Investment managers are entrusted with clients assets and should act with due care and diligence when dealing with it. The regulation of investment managers does not preclude the possibility that they can defraud their clients. The question posed by this research is whether the regulator can as part of its risk-based supervision methodology apply a fraud auditing approach to identify possible investment fraud schemes. The regulatory mandate and powers to pro-actively detect fraud is considered as well as the changes required to the regulator’s methodologies.

This study aimed to investigate and find strategies that might improve School A's Grade 12 results through the principal's visionary leadership. The theoretical framework that informed this study was the school principal as a visionary leader, which plays a critical role in ensuring the quality of teaching and learning is improved by providing necessary resources for teachers and learners and creating a sound culture of teaching-learning. Upper Echelon Theory's effectiveness is based on strategic choices by visionary leadership and school performance principles that served as the theoretical framework. A qualitative research approach was used for this study, as it allowed the researcher to conduct in-depth interviews with ten school principals in Ehlanzeni District, Mpumalanga, and examined relevant documents to collect data. The research indicates that most schools acknowledge the importance of visionary leadership and proved that there were many execution gaps in implementing the intervention strategies that needed to be addressed, such as lack of effective visionary leadership, lack of unity, support to teachers, monitoring of teaching and learning and recruiting quality teachers in Grade 12. The study recommends that school principals need to implement more effective leadership, strategic planning and implementation of policy, communication, parental involvement accountability, effective monitoring and placement of quality teachers to teach Grade 12 learners.
