Abstract:
The moving installation Visible is composed of parts of the classical painting, wooden slats and canvas. It represents the inner walls 8 anonymous portraits of dead children. They represent cruel and incomprehensible pain that a one can commit. Rotating an object is inspired by children's toys, children's carousel and its symbolism and design solutions to commemorate military mobile tent. Object carousel has an octahedral shape with a roof, levitates in the air space, not touching the ground and without a defined border.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1991.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 93-94).
All architecture is the interplay between structure, surface and ornament. Traditionally, ornament adorned structure thereby giving it its meaning. A society with its intellectual foundations resting in faith or the abstract emphasized the ornament over the structure. The growth of Rationalism and the substitution of the empirical for the abstract necessarily caused a reordering of ornament and structure. Enabled by technology, structure subsumed ornament. The new architecture was not designed as per canons, rather, new methods for design developed parallel to the technology which enabled its construction. The new architecture, supported by a load bearing skeletal structure represents a turning point in the history of building. The wall was dissolved and replaced by a skeletal structure. The structural members were not covered, rather, their exposure was a conscious act. They served to articulate the resulting architecture which was markedly spatial and expressive. Architecture was no longer confined by stylistic rules. New architecture reconciling realities of how it IS conceived and constructed finds meaning in and of itself. As a result, the conceiving and building of architecture factors into the architectural process. The reordering of the architectural elements of structure and ornament is indicative of the evolution of the intellectual process. Structure, made visible in architecture graphically represents the · thoughts, values and intents of its builders. Architecture in which structure subsumes ornament, is more reflective of the thoughts values and intents of its builders.

Abstract:
This bachelor thesis seeks to describe the displaced children’s situation and thechallenges they face due to displacement in Cali, Colombia. Many of thesechildren belong to Afro-Colombian and indigenous communities and thereforethis study will be made through an intersectional perspective based on ethnicityand class. Colombia was during recent years the country with the most internallydisplaced people in the world, and today, despite a peace agreement with thebiggest guerrilla groups, it is still a country in the top of the global statistics. Thecountry’s history is characterized by internal conflicts, illegal labor and drugtrafficking and the problems they are facing during this peace progress arecomplex. This is affecting displaced children and their families. The humanitariancrisis in Colombia is unique in many ways and have been creating manychallenges for the government. Therefore, one of the main reasons to study non-governmental, social work is because these organizations fill an important gap inresponse to help, support and empower displaced children in areas around Caliwith little governmental presence. The result of this study shows that manydisplaced children in Cali have a lower standard of living than other children. Themajority live in low-income areas and belong to the minority population, theyreceive lower quality education and are often discriminated for being Colombiansbut with a different culture and other origin than the majority population in thecity. There are various types of social work in Cali that work with empowermentto prevent this and to strengthen the children; through education or by maintainingculture in the form of music and dance. Social workers in Cali usually workwithout the support of the state and are run by people who themselves have beendisplaced. Many of the social workers feel that displaced children often are seenas a homogeneous group despite its heterogeneity.

Dee, Hannah-Mary. "Explaining visible behaviour." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2005. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/1338/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a novel approach to the problem of behaviour modelling within computer vision. This technique is not based upon statistical measures of typicality, but upon building an understanding of the way people navigate towards a goal. Representing movement through the scene in terms of the known goals and obstacles and interpreting people's behaviour as representative of underlying intentions enables behaviour to be explained in terms of these previously defined goals. A family of related algorithms for performing this goal-directed analysis of behaviour are presented and evaluated, alongside a number of metrics for measuring how well the computed explanation matches the observed behaviour. These measurements can be interpreted as measurements of goal-directedness or intentionality. The system is evaluated using a novel methodology which involves comparing the algorithmic output with the performance of humans engaged in a visual surveillance task. An application of this technique is demonstrated within the visual surveillance domain, providing classification of behaviour patterns as explicable or inexplicable. The advantages of such an approach are multiple: it handles the presence of movable goals (for example, parked cars) with ease, and trajectories which have never before been presented to the system can be classified as explicable. The output of the system (for example Agent n is heading towards goal m with an associated score indicating how good this explanation is) are easily interpreted. The systems described in this thesis could also in principle be extended to handle richer varieties of scene, moving obstacles, and more complicated systems of goals.

Hussein, Ahmed Taha. "Visible light communication system." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/15894/.

Full text
Abstract:
Visible light communication (VLC) systems have become promising candidates to complement conventional radio frequency (RF) systems due to the increasingly saturated RF band and the potentially high data rates that can be achieved by VLC systems. Over the last decade, significant research effort has been directed towards the development of VLC systems due to their numerous advantages over RF systems, such as the availability of simple transmitters (light emitting diodes, LEDs) and receivers (silicon photo detectors), better security at the physical layer, improved energy efficiency due to the dual functionally (i.e., illumination and communication) and hundreds of THz of license-free bandwidth. However, there are several challenges facing VLC systems to achieve high data rates (multi gigabits per second). These challenges include the low modulation bandwidth of the LEDs, co-channel interference (CCI), inter symbol interference (ISI) due to multipath propagation and the light unit (i.e., VLC transmitter) should be ‘‘ON’’ all the time to ensure continuous communication. This thesis investigates a number of techniques to overcome these challenges to design a robust high-speed indoor VLC system with full mobility. A RGB laser diode (LD) is proposed for communication as well as illumination. The main goal of using LD is to enable the VLC system to achieve multi-gigabits data rates when employing a simple modulation technique (such as on-off keying (OOK)), thus adding simplicity to the VLC system. A delay adaptation technique (DAT) is proposed to reduce the delay spread and enable the system to operate at higher data rates (10 Gb/s in our case). The thesis proposes employing angle diversity receivers (ADR) and imaging diversity receivers to mitigate the impact of ISI, CCI, reduce the delay spread (increase the channel bandwidth) and increase the signal to noise ratio (SNR) when the VLC system operates at high data rates (5 Gb/s and 10 Gb/s) under the effects of mobility and multipath dispersion. Moreover, the work introduces and designs three new VLC systems, an ADR relay assisted LD-VLC (ADRR-LD), an imaging relay assisted LD-VLC (IMGR-LD) and a select-the-best imaging relay assisted LD-VLC (SBIMGR-LD), which are modelled and their performance is compared at 10 Gb/s in two VLC room sizes (5m × 5m × 3m and 4m × 8m × 3m). As well as modelling in two different room scenarios: an empty room and a realistic environment were considered. The work also introduces and designs a high-speed fully adaptive VLC system that employs beam steering and computer generated holograms (CGHs), which has the ability to achieve 20 Gb/s with full receiver mobility in a realistic indoor environment. Furthermore, a new high-speed fast adaptive VLC system based on a divide-and-conquer methodology is proposed and integrated with the system to reduce the time required to identify the optimum hologram. The new system has the ability to achieve 25 Gb/s in the worst case scenario. This thesis also proposes four new infrared (IR) systems to support VLC systems when the light is totally turned off. In addition, it introduces the concept of a collaborative VLC/IR optical wireless (OW) system and investigates the impact of partial dimming on the VLC system performance. An adaptive rate technique (ART) is proposed to mitigate the impact of light dimming. Finally, an IROW system (cluster distributed with beam steering) is introduced to collaborate with a VLC system to maintain the target data rate in the case of partial dimming.

Abstract:
The theme for World Water Day 2022 is ‘Groundwater – Making the Invisible Visible’. Groundwater is water found underground in aquifers – geological formations of rocks, sands and gravels, that hold substantial quantities of water. Groundwater feeds springs, rivers, lakes and wetlands, and seeps into oceans. 80 percent of the world’s food depends on groundwater. It is recharged mainly from rain and snowfall infiltrating the ground, and can be extracted to the surface by pumps and wells.
