Full textAim: Previous research shows that the virtual environment poses challenges for the virtual leader and emphasizes the importance of leadership competencies to lead the virtual group. We see that there is a limited amount of research on project management in virtual project groups in relation to leadership competencies. The study therefore aims to increase the understanding of how project managers use their leadership competencies to handle the challenges that arise in virtual project teams. Method: The study adopts a qualitative research method, where semi-structured interviews have been conducted with project managers who have led or are leading virtual project groups. A thematic analysis has been applied where a connection has been made between significant themes in the results and previous research in the field. Result & Conclusions: The results show that virtual project managers experience challenges in the form of communication, group cohesion and digital tools. It also emerges from the results that the virtual project manager meets these challenges by being responsive, clear, and flexible, and adopts various solutions that can improve the work in the virtual environment. Contribution of the thesis: The study of virtual project management contributes to the business economics subject and leadership theory with increased knowledge of what the challenges for the virtual project manager can look like in relation to the virtual project manager's competencies. In the form of a practical contribution, the study can be useful for current or future project managers who wish to gain a deeper understanding of the subject. Suggestions for future research: For a deeper understanding of the subject, future research may examine whether different industries affect the experience of virtual project leadership, due to our limited selection. It would also have been interesting to look at whether the experience of the virtual environment differs in virtual project managers depending on experience.
