Abstract:
The thesis analyzes the Czech market of the mobile virtual network operators. It's a young and dynamic market. First entity entered in late 2012 and today there are over sixty competitors. This thesis therefore includes the historical background of the liberalization of the telecommunications market in CZ. Furthermore, the text briefly describes today's worldwide and Czech situation in telecommunications. The main goal of the thesis is to analyze whether there is stronger competition on the Czech telecommunications market after the entry of mobile virtual network operators and which of them are likely to succeed. Using Porter's five forces analysis the thesis concludes that there is a stronger competition. The MVNO's success matrix indicates which subjects will win on the market and the strategic groups' analysis compares them with their nearest competitors. The synthesis of applied analyses brings a complex view on the telecommunication market in CZ after the entry of MVNOs.

Innovation in platform industries, including mobile telecommunications, has a great impact on societies and economies; hence a migration from an existing platform to the subsequent one should be progressed under careful forecasting, weighed scenarios and strategies that encompass a broad view. This thesis analyzes why mobile network operators are struggling to move from the second generation (2G) and its derivatives to the third generation (3G) technologies and proposes migration strategies, which allow them to sustain their competitive advantage. First, a migration model is proposed as a reinforcing loop model composed of two dynamics, "Platform Migration" caused by a shortage of network capacity, and "Service Innovation" triggered by a decline in ARPU (Average Revenue Per User). Platform migration is an implementation process for new platform technologies and can be categorized into Revolution-type and Evolution-type. After these two schemes have been evaluated through case studies, Collaboration-type migration, an enhanced Evolution-type, is proposed for future, technically diversified situations. Service Innovation is a process for creating new profitable services to give further revenue growth. Empirical analysis clarifies that mental breakthrough management is a common approach in the mobile industry and proposes that a mixture of corporate, partner and market initiatives be adopted for diversified customer preference. This thesis then proposes the following strategies for future successful migration: first, mobile network operators should drive the migration cycle powerfully, concentrating on successive service innovation dynamics for their revenue growth and the next platform migration. Second, they should choose migration schemes carefully according to their level of technology leadership, value chain leadership and investment capability. Finally, service platform should be considered for realization of innovative services with Partnership Dynamics.

Abstract:
Mobile network operators are currently faced with a number of challenges at the market. The revenues from voice services have decreased the last couple of years. Mobile broadband access services are being adopted and the demand is increasing. The increasing traffic volumes require investments in order to increase the network capacity. This development leads to a large interest in network solutions that can offer high capacity and low cost. Besides the use of more efficient radio access technology mobile network operators use strategies for network deployment and operation involving other market actors. Operators share networks with competitors or outsource network deployment and operation to other companies, e.g. suppliers of network equipment. In these examples the mobile operators cooperate about the networks, the relations to end-users are the same as if the operator would operate the network on its own. However, in other areas other actors enter the market for mobile services where mobile operators traditionally have been the dominant player. Handset manufacturers and Internet companies offer value added services and applications to the end-users. They also establish relations with customers of the mobile operators. Hence, mobile operators look into new technical solutions and services in order to reduce costs and find new services and sources of revenues. Many of the networking solutions and services require that the operator cooperates with some other actor. In this PhD thesis cooperation strategies of mobile network operators are analyzed including cooperation with competitors, customers and different types of partners. The partner can be a provider of a non-telecom service like public transportation, financial institutes or third parties taking intermediary roles. The main research questions in the thesis revolves around why and how mobile operators cooperate. The drivers for cooperation and the way the cooperation is organized is analyzed for a number of cases. Three types of services and markets are analyzed: - Public mobile broadband access services - Services and solutions for indoor wireless access - Mobile payment, ticketing and contactless services A number of technical solutions, business concepts and different types of cooperation and business scenarios have been investigated. Two overall research questions that are applicable for all cases of cooperation are identified for the analysis. - What are the main drivers for a specific type of cooperation? - In what ways can the actors organize the cooperation?

Patterson, Cameron Webster. "An Economic Model of Subscriber Offloading Between Mobile Network Operators and a WLAN Operator." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/50660.

Full text
Abstract:
With increasing mobile data demand there is a push towards heterogeneous networks. Small-scale operators (SSOs) of WLANs are becoming more prevalent, while Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) seek an outlet for their customers' data usage. These conditions prompt the need for an effective relationship between the two parties for the purpose of offloading cellular data traffic to WLANs in a way that is economically beneficial to all involved. This thesis presents a model of such a relationship, in which the SSO sets a strategic offloading price per subscriber and several MNOs can choose how many subscribers they want to offload in order to minimize their costs. We determine the optimal offloading price, identify how the SSO incorporates its own network's quality of service (QoS) into its price decision, and examine the way in which the MNOs' cost structures affect their ability to offload. This model can be applied by both MNOs and SSOs to make informed network deployment decisions, even before engaging in an offloading relationship.

Abstract:
Network virtualisation has become one of the most prominent solutions for sus-tainability towards the dramatic increase of data demand in next-generation mobile networks. In addition, apart from increasing the overall infrastructure utilisation, it also greatly improves the manageability, the scalability and the robustness of the network. In order to allow multiple virtual networks to coexist in the same substrate network, the need for efficient network sharing techniques is imperative. The main purpose of this work is to provide a holistic optimization framework for vir-tual network embedding solutions, where the actual user mobility effect is explicitly considered. First, the main focus is given on the study of the mobility effect and the impact of the mobility management techniques on the end-to-end communication of the mobile user. A hybrid-distributed mobility management scheme is proposed and compared against the latest mobility management schemes. Then, an optimisation framework for efficient mobility-aware virtual network embedding is proposed and evaluated by comparison with other works from the literature. Moving deeper in the area of virtual network embedding, the focus is given on minimizing the end-to-end delay and providing service differentiation, allowing in this way delay sensitive services to use the formed virtual networks with the minimum possible delay, as op-posed to other more elastic services that use the same substrate network. The last part of this work is the study and the analysis of the stochastic nature of the virtual network embedding parameters and the proposal of an optimisation framework for adjustable-robustness virtual network embedding. Driven by the benefits from virtualising the network and its functions, research as well as industry are expected to exploit in a greater degree than today the merits of this concept. The co-existence of multiple tenants not only will greatly change the network industry from a business perspective, but also will emphasise the need for more efficient and flexible network sharing techniques. This work belongs to the initial efforts to embrace and adopt the virtualisation concept in the next-generation wireless networks.

Laws, Richard, and Ni Mo. "Product & Pricing Standardization within the Global Mobile Network Operator Industry." Thesis, Högskolan i Gävle, Avdelningen för ekonomi, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hig:diva-19976.

Full text
Abstract:
Aim: This study focuses on the degree to which mobile network operators standardize or adapt their product and pricing strategies amongst their foreign subsidiaries. Method: 10 mobile network operators with large overseas business investments and 70 of their foreign majority-owned subsidiaries are included in this empirical analysis. Variables related to data, SMS, Voice, and other relevant variables, are selected to represent ‘product’ marketing characteristics; and number of plans and specific price points across three ‘price baskets’ to represent ‘price’ marketing. Results & Conclusion: MNOs exhibited a moderate degree of standardization in terms of product design, with a lesser degree of standardization for price. Standardization scores were highly positively correlated to subsidiary operations in markets within the same region and level of economic development as the domestic market. There is also a notable clustering of marketing approaches in the Sub-Saharan African region. Implications: Existing research on standardization is reinforced by these results. Future research on the MNO industry, if global in nature, will need to account for the large degree of differences between markets. If focused on specific regions, studies can proceed on the basis of similarity in marketing strategies. Contribution: This is the most recent quantitative study on standardization in the MNO industry carried out in the last 10 years. Since that time the industry has also undergone significant changes.

Abstract:
All Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) as well as international carriers are moving voice services from the legacy Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to Voice over IP (VoIP). The benefit is that VoIP traffic can be easily rerouted at any moment, thus giving companies a variety of options as traffic can be rerouted to any carrier of choice leading to different Quality of Service (QoS) levels (and thus agreements) as well as different prices to choose from. With a fierce competition for the telecom companies involved in the voice traffic hubbing business, this new landscape offers not only opportunities but also opens the system to vulnerabilities. The stakes are actually quite high: If harm can be done to one of these international carriers, other companies will route away their traffic. The result will be significant financial damages for the company as well as a serious harm to its reputation. The aim of this paper is to raise awareness that internationalcarriers and in particular their VoIP traffic can be exposed to debilitating attacks to harm these systems that are critical for our everyday life. The experimentation in this project demonstrates with a hands-on example how a major carrier can be hacked and rendered useless. In particular, we craft a framework for testing the security of interconnects between MNOs and international carriers. The central point of the paper will be to demonstrate how easy it can be to attack major carriers in the market: using common open source tools without having any information in advance. Moreover, the goal is to understand how the market functions, how interconnects between companies are built, where the weaknesses are, and which solutions can thwart those threats and secure these systems.

As 5th Generation research reaches the twilight, the research community must go beyond 5G and look towards the 2030 connectivity landscape, namely 6G. In this context, this work takes a step towards the 6G vision by proposing a next generation communication platform, which aims to extend the rigid coverage area of fixed deployment networks by considering virtual mobile small cells (MSC) that are created on demand. Relying on emerging computing paradigms such as NFV (Network Function Virtualization) and SDN (Software Defined Networking), these cells can harness radio and networking capability locally reducing protocol signalling latency and overhead. These MSCs constitute an intelligent pool of networking resources that can collaborate to form a wireless network of MSCs providing a communication platform for localized, ubiquitous and reliable connectivity. The technology enablers for implementing the MSC concept are also addressed in terms of virtualization, lightweight wireless security, and energy efficient RF. The benefits of the MSC architecture towards reliable and efficient cell-offloading are demonstrated as a use-case.

Rahmatizadeh, Rouhollah. "Energy efficient routing towards a mobile sink using virtual coordinates in a wireless sensor network." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2014. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/6342.

Full text
Abstract:
The existence of a coordinate system can often improve the routing in a wireless sensor network. While most coordinate systems correspond to the geometrical or geographical coordinates, in recent years researchers had proposed the use of virtual coordinates. Virtual coordinates depend only on the topology of the network as defined by the connectivity of the nodes, without requiring geographical information. The work in this thesis extends the use of virtual coordinates to scenarios where the wireless sensor network has a mobile sink. One reason to use a mobile sink is to distribute the energy consumption more evenly among the sensor nodes and thus extend the life-time of the network. We developed two algorithms, MS-DVCR and CU-DVCR which perform routing towards a mobile sink using virtual coordinates. In contrast to the baseline virtual coordinate routing MS-DVCR limits routing updates triggered by the sink movement to a local area around the sink. In contrast, CU-DVCR limits the route updates to a circular area on the boundary of the local area. We describe the design justification and the implementation of these algorithms. Using a set of experimental studies, we show that MS-DVCR and CU-DVCR achieve a lower energy consumption compared to the baseline virtual coordinate routing without any noticeable impact on routing performance. In addition, CU-DVCR provides a lower energy consumption than MS-DVCR for the case of a fast moving sink.

With the emerging of online social networks along with the worldwide diffusion of smartphones, context awareness has become an essential concept in the field of mobile computing. Recent efforts and relevant research regarding mobile social networks aim at connecting people in smart environments considering not only their social behavior but also their context. In this perspective, this work presents a novel Mobile Social Network (MSN) model called Spontaneous Social Network (SSN). The main scientific contribution of the SSN model is the possibility of creating social communities based on a combination of multiple contexts, including location, profile and data obtained from external online social networks. In the literature, we found several works that lack on the community grouping approach, on the aspect that they are either limited to a specific location, or do not fully support virtual social interactions. We develop a mobile application called Dino, to provide a glimpse of what an SSN based application would be. To evaluate our model we perform two experiments using the developed mobile client. First, we present hypothetical scenarios based on possible real-world SSN applications to measure users’ perceived sense of community. The scenarios described are (1) music concert (2) sport event (3) shopping mall (4) conference or workshop (5) school or university. Second, we ask users to consider their real interests to assess our formed groups regarding their relevance and measure precision and recall of the groups’ suggestions. We compute average values of 0.72 and 0.83 for precision and recall, respectively. The experiments’ results to assess the proposed scenarios ascertain average values of agreement of 84% for sense of community, 80% for sense of belonging, 90% for social usefulness, 92% for member loyalty, and 81% for communities’ ephemerality. Therefore, our evaluation depict that dynamic virtual communities formed by a SSN model based application would beneficially improve a social-aware virtual environment.

Ho, Yao. "CONNECTIONLESS APPROACH – A LOCALIZED SCHEME TO MOBILE AD HOC NETWORKS." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2009. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/2763.

Abstract:
According to a Gartner Group (www.gartner.com) report in September 2008, the worldwide telecommunications market is on pace to reach $2 trillion in 2008. Gartner predicts that by 2012, the ratio of mobile to fixed connections will exceed 4-to-1. The North American mobile data market grew to 141.1 million connections in 2007, with a compound annual growth rate of 41.7 percent. It is believed that a large portion will be ad hoc and multi-hop connections, which will open many opportunities for Mobile Ad hoc NETwork (MANET) applications and Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) applications. A MANET is a self-organizing multi-hop wireless network where all nodes participate in the routing and data forwarding process. Such a network can be easily deployed in situations where no base station is available, and a network must be build spontaneously. In applications such as battlefield communications, national crises, disaster recovery, and sensor deployment, a wired network is not available and ad hoc networks provide the only feasible means of communications and information access. Ad hoc networks have also become commonplace for gaming, conferencing, electronic classrooms, and particularly vehicle-to-vehicle communications. A Wireless mash network (WMN) is collection of mesh clients and mesh nodes (routers), with mesh nodes forming the backbone of the network and providing connection to the Internet and other network. Their rapid deployment and ease of maintenance are suitable for on-demand network such as disaster recovery, homeland security, convention centers, hard-to-wire buildings and unfriendly terrains. One important problem with MANET is the routing protocol that needs to work well not just with a small network, but also sustain efficiency and scalability as the network gets expanded and the application transmits data in greater volume. In such an environment, mobility, channel error, and congestion are the main causes for packet loss. Due to mobility of mobile hosts, addressing frequent and unpredictable topology changes is fundamental to MANET research. Two general approaches have been considered: connection-oriented approach and connectionless-oriented approach. In the former, the emphasis is on how to reconnect quickly with low overhead when a broken link occurs. Examples of this approach includes , , , , , , , , , and . In contrast, connectionless-oriented approach focuses on minimizing the occurrence of broken links. We proposed one such scheme called Connectionless Approach (CLA) and . In CLA, the network area is divided into non-overlapping grid cells, each serving as a virtual router. Any physical router (i.e., mobile host), currently inside a virtual router, can help forward the data packet to the next virtual router along the virtual link. This process is repeated until the packet reaches its final destination. Since a virtual link is based on virtual routers which do not move, it is much more robust than physical links used in the connection-oriented techniques. Simulation results in our previous works and , based on GloMoSim , indicate that CLA performs significantly better than connection-oriented techniques (i.e., AODV, DSR, LAR, GRID, TMNR, and GPSR). The contribution of this work consists of investigating and developing new Connectionless-Oriented Approach for Mobile Ad Hoc Network. Two of the greatest impacts of this research are as follows. First, the new approach is targeted towards robustly support high mobility and large scale environment which has been adapted for vehicle-to-vehicle environment in . Second, the detailed simulations which compare eight representative routing protocols, namely AODV, DSR, LAR, GRID, TMNR, GPSR, CBF, and CLA, under high-mobility environments. As many important emergent applications of the technology involved high-mobility nodes, very little is known about the existing routing methods perform relative to each other in high-mobility environments. The simulation results provide insight into ad hoc routing protocols and offer guidelines for mobile ad hoc network applications. Next, we enhanced and extend the connectionless-oriented approach. The current connectionless-oriented approach, however, may suffer from packet drops since traffic congestion is not considered in the packet forwarding policy. We address this weakness by considering the connectionless-oriented approach with a collision avoidance routing technique. After that, we investigate techniques to enforce collaboration among mobile devices in supporting the virtual router functionality. Many works have been published to combat such problem - misbehaving nodes are detected and a routing algorithm is employed to avoid and penalize misbehaving nodes. These techniques, however, cannot be applied to the connectionless-oriented approach since any node in the general direction towards the destination node can potentially help forward the data packets. To address the security and cooperation issues for connectionless-oriented approach, we introduce a cooperation enforcement technique called 3CE (3-Counter Enforcement). In addition, wireless mesh networks have become increasingly popular in recent years. Wireless mash network (WMNs) are collection of mesh clients and mesh nodes (routers), with mesh nodes forming the backbone of the network and providing connection to the Internet and other network. We propose a paradigm that combines virtual routers and mesh nodes to create a hybrid network call VR-Mesh Network. This hybrid network can reduce number of mesh node needed without decrease the performance of the network.

Abstract:
The objective of this research is to investigate how mobile cellular network operators can increase the average revenue per user by stimulating the usage of mobile broadband services. There is a general consensus that the revenue from voice calls is slowly reaching saturation; hence, mobile cellular operators, service providers and content providers are looking for other sources of revenue from their new and existing customers. They are therefore beginning to focus more intensively on customer retention and on developing new strategies that will stimulate the usage of high speed mobile data services. The research shows that most people are aware of many of the mobile data services offered by operators, but that they thought that they were unreliable, slow, difficult to use and expensive. By and large, people signed up for mobile data services because they wanted a mobile always-on connection anytime, anywhere, with faster speed when accessing e-mail and other services or when downloading data from the Internet. The majority of people would use mobile broadband internet service if it cost less to use; if the speed were faster and the service were easy to use; if the cellular phone had a larger screen and used less battery power; and if the keyboard were larger. The relationship between Network operators, WASPs and content providers was found to be good, even though at times it is strained by the increased competition between them; this forces them not to cooperate on some issues for fear of compromising their competitive advantage.

Abstract:

This paper analyses how the Zimbabwean economic history has led to the perception and attitude of the population towards the financial industry. It has been blighted by extremes to the extent that in 2008 the Zimbabwe economy had one of the highest hyperinflation rate in the world. Pettinger sums up the hyperinflation journey of Zimbabwe as having begun in the 1990s shortly after the disastrous land reform. This is where private farms were grabbed from landowners and re-allocated to mostly peasant farmers who had no technical know-how in farming. It was also a time when the country was involved in an unbudgeted and unsolicited second Congo civil war necessitating that the Government increase salaries to cater for soldiers and other officials assigned to the Congo. Earlier on the government had buckled under pressure from former war liberators (war veterans) and paid out unbudgeted bonuses.

Abstract:
Cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) is a form of utility computing which has emerged with the recent innovations in the service computing and data communication technologies. Regardless of the fact that IaaS is attractive for application service providers, satisfying user requests while ensuring cloud operational objectives is a complicated task that raises several resource management challenges. Among these challenges, limited controllability over network services delivered to cloud consumers is prominent in single datacenter cloud environments. In addition, the lack of seamless service migration and optimization, poor infrastructure utilization, and unavailability of efficient fault tolerant techniques are noteworthy challenges in geographically distributed datacenter clouds. Initially in this thesis, a datacenter resource management framework is presented to address the challenge of limited controllability over cloud network traffic. The proposed framework integrates network virtualization functionalities offered by software defined networking (SDN) into cloud ecosystem. To provide rich traffic control features to IaaS consumers, control plane virtualization capabilities offered by SDN have been employed. Secondly, a quality of service (QoS) aware seamless service migration and optimization framework has been proposed in the context of geo-distributed datacenters. Focus has been given to a mobile end-user scenario where frequent cloud service migrations are required to mitigate QoS violations. Finally, an SDN-based dynamic fault restoration scheme and a shared backup-based fault protection scheme have been proposed. The fault restoration has been achieved by introducing QoS-aware reactive and shared risk link group-aware proactive path computation algorithms. Shared backup protection has been achieved by optimizing virtual and backup link embedding through a novel integer linear programming approach. The proposed solutions significantly improve bandwidth utilization in inter-datacenter networks while recovering from substrate link failures.

Mestrado em Engenharia Eletrónica e de Telecomunicações
Despite the substantial increase in the percentage of the globe surface covered by mobile communications, there are issues that have hampered the implementation and development of cellular networks in regions where the market and economic power are still under development. Many of these issues are of economic and financial nature. It is curiously a contradictory fact, since mobile communications on several occasions proved to be a great ally for the growth and economic development of this type of regions. Therefore, in situations such as these, where the development or installation of cellular networks is blocked or conditioned by economic and financial factors, the adoption of infrastructure or service sharing methods can facilitate the implementation and expansion of cellular networks in these regions. The work developed in this dissertation seeks to identify and study the most common methods of cellular network sharing. Through the use of a numerical tool, the effects and techno-economic benefits that each sharing method will bring to the operators interested in entering markets with these characteristics will be analyzed.

Abstract:
There has been a steady growth in the traffic generated by Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), and by 2020 it is expected to overload the existing licensed spectrum capacity and lead to the problem of scarce resources. One method to deal with this traffic overload is to access unlicensed and shared spectrum bands using an opportunistic approach. The use of Licensed Shared Access (LSA) is a novel approach for spectrum sharing between the incumbent user (i.e., the current owner of the shared spectrum) and the LSA licensee (i.e., the temporary user of frequencies, such as an MNO). The LSA system allows the incumbent users to temporarily provide the LSA licensee with access to its spectrum resources. However, licensees must adopt vertical handover and traffic steering procedures to vacate their customers from the LSA band without causing interference, whenever this is required by the incumbent. These procedures should be carried out, de facto, before the base station is turned off as a part of a rapid release of unscheduled LSA band facing evacuation scenarios. Thus, in this dissertation, a cognitive mechanism is proposed to make decisions in advance to find the best target network(s) for evacuated customers in connected mode and with active traffic per class of service. On the basis of these decisions, the vertical handover and traffic steering procedures are carried out for the best target network(s), which are selected in advance and undertaken immediately to avoid interference between the licensee and incumbent services. Furthermore, this guarantees the seamless connectivity and QoS of evacuated customers and their traffic respectively, during and after the unscheduled evacuation scenarios. A performance evaluation conducted in a simulating scenario consisting of one LTE-LSA and three Wi-Fi networks, demonstrated that the proposed solution could be completed within the time required for the unscheduled evacuation, as well as, being able to ensure the QoS and seamless connectivity of the evacuees. The total execution time obtained during the performance evaluation of the proposed solution was around 46% faster than of two related works and could thus avoid interference between the licensee and incumbent services.

Abstract:
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are composed of a large number of battery-powered sensor nodes that have the ability to sense the physical environment, compute the obtained information and communicate using the radio interfaces. Because sensor nodes are generally deployed on a large and wild area, they are powered by embedded battery. And it is difficult to change or recharge the battery, thus to reduce the energy consumption when sensors and protocols are designed is very important and can extend the lifetime of WSNs. So sensor nodes transmit packets with a lower transmission power (e.g. OdBm). With this transmission power, a packet can only be transmitted dozens of meters away. Therefore, when a sensor detects an event, a packet is sent in a multi-hop, ad-hoc manner (without fixed infrastructure and each sensor is able to relay the packet) to the sink (specific node which gathers information and reacts to the network situation). In this thesis, we first give an elaborate state of the art of WSNs. Then the impacts of duty-cycle and unreliable links or the performances of routing layer are analyzed. Based on the analytical results, we then propose three new simple yet effective methods to construct virtual coordinates under unreliable links in WSNs. By further taking the duty-cycle and real-time constraints into consideration we propose two cross-layer forwarding protocols which can have a greater delivery ratio and satisfy the deadline requirements. In order to have protocols for the WSNs that have dynamic topology, we then propose a robust forwarding protocol which can adapt its parameters when the topology changes. At last, we conclude this thesis and give some perspectives.

This study is aimed at exploring the key factors of successful management for physical and virtual network forms of mobile communication industry and comparing their differences. First of all, through the collection of secondary data, the factors influencing the business strategy of mobile communication industry are extracted from the collected literature; and in-depth interview of case studies as the basis for revising key success factors for this study, Mobile Network Operator, MNO and Mobile Virtual Network Operator, MVNO are designed to be reference indicators of key success factors. According to their nature, reference indicators are categorized to six major dimensions: 1. market opportunities, 2. policy act, 3. marketing channel, 4. financial management, 5. enterprise integration, 6. product value. Take business management cadres as research subject to conduct questionnaires and then adopt GM(0,N) model for weight analysis. As the result shown, among key success factors of MNO, “getting up with the latest status of competitors” is most valued, followed by “prompt reaction to competitors’ strategic activities”, thirdly “resources integration capabilities”, fourthly “clarity of government policies”, fifthly “grasping the development of technology” and the sixth is “timing of the launch of service products” and “fair and rational regulatory orders.” As for key success factors of MVNO, “the integrity of regulatory orders” is most valued, followed by “applicability of cross-industry regulations”, thirdly “clarity of government policies”, fourthly “launching the service products leading competitors”, fifthly “prompt reaction to competitors’ strategic activities” and the sixth is “grasping the change of customers need.” To explore the differences of key success factors between MNO and MVNO, it is mainly based on the different business modes between them. What MVNO management needs is flexibility, while MNO management requires economies of scale. Customer resources they pursued are not identical. Finally, this study also analyzes the relationship between success factors in the mobile communication industry and expects that the result will help the mobile communication operators to conduct more effective integration and planning, expand the management performance of business entity and improve operational efficiency to achieve the purpose of sustainable operation.

Abstract In response to the global trend towards telecommunications liberalization, Taiwan’s competent authority for telecommunications policies recently implemented “Speed up Hi-quality Broadband Network Infrastructure” and “Quality Service is the Core of Competition”. The island’s telecommunications authority not only announced the 5 bidding winners for 3G (Third Generation) licenses in February 2002, but also planned to open up the service to MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) in December 2003. How the strategies to open the market to MVNOs have influenced telecommunications marketing is of great importance for practical applications and academic research. We assesses the key factors in leading to a win-win situation for both MVNOs and MNOs (Mobile Network Operators) in Taiwan by analyzing the latest trends in MVNOs’ development. This study investigates the trends followed by MVNOs in the last three years and analyzes the strategies that can contribute to the success of Taiwan’s telecommunications industry and marketing. We apply the method and concept of PATTERN (Planning Assistance Through Technical Evaluation of Relevance Number) to establish a relevant system for researching the key successful factors of the strategies in reaching a win-win situation both MVNOs and MNO in Taiwan. We also use the fuzzy MCDM (Multi-Criteria Decision Making) method for analyzing the different preferences of decision groups in the criteria weights and rank the alternatives in a fuzzy environment to provide a strategy scheme. These results can assist telecommunications operators, 3G license owners, potential MVNOs, and equipment manufacturers when working out business plans.

A Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) is a telecommunications operator who does not own a radio frequency license to operate a mobile telecommunication network but acting like a Mobile Network Operator (MNO). MVNO operators do not own infrastructures such as base stations or a network backbone. Instead, they lease mobile network resources or wholesale airtime minutes from an MNO partner and then resell the mobile services to consumers using their own branding and marketing channels. MVNOs have lower startup costs and can provide consumers more service varieties. This research was based on the Technology Acceptance Model. The objective was to find out how Network Quality, Relative Advantages, Service Convenience, Reference Groups, and Service Price influence consumers’ adaptation behaviors of the MVNO service. This research used the questionnaire survey method and targeted at consumers who have heard about or used the MVNO services. There were a total of 285 valid surveys received. The Descriptive Statistics, Reliability Analysis, Correlation Analysis, Collinearity and Regression Analysis were used to analyze consumers’ adaptation of the MVNO service. The results showed that Network Quality, Relative Advantages, Service Convenience, and Reference Groups all have a strong positive influence on the Perceived Usefulness and Perceived Ease of Use of the MVNO service. In addition, the Perceived Usefulness and Perceived Ease of Use both have a strong positive influence on the consumer attitudes and behaviors; consumer attitudes have a positive influence on their behaviors; Service Price has a strong influence on the consumer attitudes, but it is independent from the consumer behaviors.

The first mobile cellular telephone was established In St. louis (Missouri. USA) in 1946. In a few years time Europe followed with a similar service. These systems were based on technology developed during the World War 2 (Vodacom Corporate Profile:1999/2000:1). Between 1950 and 1960, cellular radio evolved to become automatic and Its costs dropped due to the Introduction of transistor technology. During the 1970's large scale integration and development of micro-processors enabled more complex systems development (Vodacom Corporate Profile :1999/2000:1 ). In 1988 the European Telecommunications Standard Institute (ETSI) was created. This Institute enabled network operators and telecommunications equipment manufacturers to become Involved In the specification of Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) (Vodacom Corporate Profile :199~/2000:1 ). The GSM standard of communication was launched In Europe in 1992. This standard Is widelyused In European and African countries...

The Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) is an infrastructureless mobile wireless network. The mobile hosts in the MANET communicate each other with a proposed routing algorithm. The architecture of the communication between the MANET and Internet is seldom discussed in the recent. This thesis proposed a system architecture to manage the communications between the MANET and Internet. The Mobile IP is designed to access the mobile hosts in the MANET. We constructed the virtual backbone to manage the MANET by the clustering. The virtual backbone reduces the cost of the routing table and control messages. The simulation programs show that our proposal outperforms the CGSR, AODV, and DSDV in the cost of the routing table, the stability of the virtual backbone, and the transmission performance.

Nowadays, hotspots are being largely deployed by WISPs (Wireless Internet Service Providers) as a ubiquitous means of offering Internet access to their customers. However, sparse of spectrum and costly infrastructure, it requires more flexible bandwidth management than before. In order to alleviate the burden of cost incurred by service providers, this thesis introduces a simple concept of bandwidth sharing in a wireless environment. As in the case of MVNO, wireless networks will also develop “virtual operator” to run their business. The facility band operator can unite all of its virtual operators to share bandwidth by different market segment. It proposes a dynamic programming algorithm to obtain the optimal solution by forecasting bandwidth demand in advance. The research will simulate the three virtual operators’ behavior in an IEEE 802.11g environment. These simulations are conducted in different market segments and analyze the performance of the bandwidth sharing algorithm. The results show that the bandwidth sharing model for virtual network operators can not only provide higher bandwidth utilization and QoS but also earn more profit for all virtual operators. In addition, the model can help operators to alleviate the unexpected increase in bandwidth demand. As a conclusion, the model provides an optimal bandwidth sharing algorithm and the rental management procedure for operators in the future wireless environment.

This paper considers the problem of deploying a mobile sensor network in an unknown environment. A mobile sensor network is a distributed collection of nodes, each of which has sensing, computation, communication and locomotion capabilities. Previous work on mobile sensor deployment is based on a round by round process, where sensors move iteratively until the maximum coverage is reached. Although these solutions can deploy mobile sensors in a distributed way, the mobile sensors may move in a zig-zag way and waste a lot of energy compared to moving directly to the final location. We propose a clustered virtual force algorithm (CVFA) as an energy efficiency deployment strategy to enhance the coverage after an initial random placement of sensors. The virtual forces are constructed such that each node is attracted or repelled by other nodes, thereby forcing the network to spread itself throughout the environment. The approach is both distributed and scalable. The major concept of CVFA is to decrease unnecessary excessive movements through efficient communications. Because of the movement is much more expensive than communication and computation in terms of energy. In CVFA, more global information of k-hop neighbors can be acquired by the inter-cluster communications. Hence, mobile sensors can calculate their target locations, move logically, and update new logical locations through inter-cluster communications. Actual movement only occurs when sensors determine their final locations. Simulation results show that CVFA can significantly reduce the energy consumption compared to previous work, while maintaining similar coverage.

Abstract:
Research report submitted to the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management, Graduate School of Public and Development Management, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Master of Management in the field of ICT Policy and Regulation, University of the Witwatersrand, 2012.
Universal Service Obligations (USOs) have been used, for over a decade, as a regulatory mechanism to bridge the digital divide in South Africa. For USOs to be effective and efficient in bridging the digital divide, it requires close coordination between various impacted and interested stakeholders, such as mobile network operators (MNOs), the ICT regulatory authority (the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa), and the Universal Service and Access Agency of South Africa in order to extend the number of beneficiaries of the USOs. Furthermore, this requires stakeholders to understand the full impact, as well as the costs and benefits (financial and non financial) before imposing the USOs. The evidence from this research confirms that there was no monitoring and evaluation of USOs for MNOs during their implementation. More importantly, the Regulatory Impact Assessment (as a regulatory tool) was never used by ICASA in respect of the USOs initiative. This led to the failure of the initiative in achieving most of its objectives. Such failure can be attributed to lack of understanding by ICASA of the general impact of imposing the USOs upon MNOs, given that no impact assessment was done before such imposition. Recommendations arising from the research include the need for a shared vision on the USOs initiative, the need for clearly identified and defined roles for all stakeholders with an interest in the initiative, the need for a properly analysed and know ICT access gap, the need to balance the use of market and non market mechanisms in respect of USOs, the to ensure a proper funding mechanisms for USOs, and the need to identify effective regulatory governance in respect of USOs.

In the digital convergence era, telecommunication technology and new application services are changing steadily. It also changes the way telecommunication network constructed and dominant profit model from voice to 4G mobile internet service. The next event is the chance and challenge that the coming 5G network will bring. This thesis makes an analysis of the 5G network on the business model of Taiwan mobile operators. In between these analyses, by the ambition matrix, it shows that the investment to build a 5G network and create new service market should be designed and considered at the same time. By the 10 types of innovation, from the operators’ point of view, the telecommunication services covered all types of innovation including technology, network implementation, services, and channels. While in the initial stage of constructing 5G network, the most important innovation area are profit model and network to connect with other partners to create values. By the strategy profile analysis methodology and in response to the IoT, big data market demand, to approach new service market, it is recommended to adopt the Partner Service Provider model, cross different industry sectors collaboration and build a 5G network ecosystem. Facing the different new service models and different competitor profiles, the urgent task for the telecommunication operators is transformation、cross industry sectors collaboration、establishing close partner relationship and to create new service market and new profit model in the future 5G network.

Licensed assisted access (LAA) is the new technology of radio access network (RAN) in 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) release 13. In addition to accessing licensed band, LAA can also access unlicensed band to increase higher throughput through carrier aggregation. In fact, the demand for spectrum will obviously increase in the future because of 5th generation mobile networks (5G) system such as virtual reality (VR) or the internet of things (IoT). Besides, the phenomenon where people stay in-doors about 80% of the day is another reason. Therefore, combining licensed band and unlicensed band is one of the important ways to satisfy the demand in indoor environ-ment. If every mobile network operator (MNO) wants to fast and widely build high per-formance 5G RAN in indoor, the space will be wasted for same purposes and the oper-ator expense will be expensive. Thus, the concept of micro operator (μO) is proposed. μO will negotiate with the manager of area and build RAN. Then, MNOs can provide services to its subscribers through renting RAN from μO. After that, not only MNOs can reduce its capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operator expense (OPEX) but also μO can get profit from this market. In fact, there is some research about coordination of RAN and spectrum among multiple MNOs by coordinator or μO in indoor environment. However, whether μO will deal with MNOs for renting RAN and how μO coordinate unlicensed band among multiple MNOs have not been discussed. How μO coordinate LAA RAN and spectrum including licensed band unlicensed band among multiple MNOs to provide different quality of service (QoS) for MNOs’ subscribers will be discussed. This research will focus on the incentives and conditions of transaction between MNO and μO and how μO effectively uses unlicensed band. The problem is as following: I. What are the incentives and conditions in which one MNO rents LAA from μO? The challenges lie in the analysis of revenue, cost, permission fee, etc. of LAA for MNO and μO according to the number of subscribers and service scenario. II. How does μO coordinate LAA and unlicensed band between two MNOs? The challenges lie in the rules of allocation on unlicensed band to increase efficiency and fairness. This thesis discusses whether MNO will build LAA network itself or rent LAA net-work from μO according to number of MNO’s subscribers and quantity of spectrum which MNO has. Moreover, to build micro operator opportunity analysis (MOOpA), cost of LAA network, fee of different QoS, heterogeneous spectrum allocation, etc. are considered by paper survey. MOOpA includes MNO transaction module, μO transaction module, media access control of LAA simulator (LAA simulator), etc. to solve the ques-tions in this thesis. In the aspect of cost, CAPEX and OPEX of building one small cell whose lifetime is 10-year are considered. In the aspect of MNO’s revenue, subscribers are divided into two types of QoS by 3GPP corresponding to different fee: Guaranteed bit rate (GBR) and Non-GBR. This thesis follows the rules in 3GPP and implement het-erogeneous spectrum allocation module. In this module, licensed band will be firstly allocated to GBR subscribers because GBR subscribers should be guaranteed with strict Qos. On the other hands, unlicensed band will be firstly allocated to Non-GBR sub-scribers although Non-GBR appropriately use both licensed and unlicensed band, as Non-GBR subscribers only should be guaranteed with loose Qos. To guarantee Qos of every subscriber including guaranteed maximum delay and minimum throughput, pro-portional fair scheduler module, defined by Basukala (2007), is used in LAA simulator to prevent subscribers from “starvation”. Finally, this research uses LAA simulator to evaluate MNO’s revenue in the scenarios of different QoS demands with limited spec-trum MNO having according to quantity of spectrum, number of subscribers, Qos types, fee, cost, etc. Furthermore, we discuss whether μO will deal with MNOs and how much renting RAN is. To coordinate unlicensed band between two MNOs, priority-oriented unlicensed band allocation algorithm module (POUBA) is the new design in the LAA simulator to allocate unlicensed band to MNOs. By the feature of that spectrum can be split equally to N resource blocks (RB), RBs are allocated to MNOs one by one according to the value of MNO’s priority. The value of MNO’s priority has two features as followed: (1) To avoid having idle spectrum, the more remained licensed band, the value of that li-censed band minus the part GBR subscribers use is, the less the value of MNO’s priority is. (2) The more RBs MNO has got, the less the value of MNO’s priority is. Compared with method of equalization where every MNO gets equal quantity of RBs, POUBA can satisfy greater number of Non-GBR subscribers in the scenarios where supply can or cannot meet demand. Eventually, Micro operator coordination of licensed assisted access system is im-plemented in this thesis. The system includes POUBA, graphical user interface (GUI) web of allocation management, database of management, interface ready for setting throughput command on unlicensed band in Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) LAA small cell, etc. Proof of concept of for the feasibility of micro operator co-ordination of licensed assisted access in indoor environment is the goal.

When knowledge and digital economy have been coming in the twenty-first century, most enterprises protect the transmission of internal information using virtual private networks. However, transactions through wireless transmission anytime and anywhere have been paid much attention by enterprises. In this thesis, we focus on how to design secure and efficient schemes suitable for mobile virtual private networks subject to many restrictions of functions in mobile environments. Traditional digital signature schemes often consider single signature. Nevertheless, we must think about the relationship between an individual and groups in the real electronic commerce. Consequently, this study integrates the elliptic curve cryptosystems (ECC), group-oriented signature, self-certified public key cryptosystems and group-oriented authenticated encryption scheme so that the transmission of packets in mobile virtual private networks can be more secure. Also, we can develop further a secure environment of mobile group-oriented electronic commerce based on our proposed security schemes. Based on ECC, the proposed security schemes can possess fewer bits achieving the same security degree as other public key cryptosystems, and the key space needed can be also greatly reduced. Thus, ECC is very fit for applying in resource-limited mobile virtual private networks. As to the computing complexity and communication cost, they are also substantially decreased. Moreover, the proposed group-oriented authenticated encryption scheme can transform authenticated encryption message into a general digital signature with message recovery without requiring extra computing cost. Hence, in this thesis our proposed schemes are quite suitable for mobile virtual private networks in practical applications.
