Polak, Sara, and Daniel Trottier, eds. Violence and Trolling on Social Media. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789462989481.

Full text
Abstract:
‘Trolls for Trump’, virtual rape, fake news — social media discourse, including forms of virtual and real violence, has become a formidable, yet elusive, political force. What characterizes online vitriol? How do we understand the narratives generated, and also address their real-world — even life-and-death— impact? How can hatred, bullying, and dehumanization on social media platforms be addressed and countered in a post-truth world? Violence and Trolling on Social Media: History, Affect, and Effects of Online Vitriol unpacks discourses, metaphors, dynamics, and framing on social media, in order to begin to answer these questions. Written for and by cultural and media studies scholars, journalists, political philosophers, digital communication professionals, activists and advocates, this book connects theoretical approaches from cultural and media studies with practical challenges and experiences ‘from the field’, providing insight into a rough media landscape.

Full text
Abstract:
Gina Zavota’s “Plotinus’ ‘Reverse’ Platonism: A Deleuzian Response to the Problem of Emanation Imagery” attempts a radical rethinking of the Plotinian question of emanation through the lens of Deleuze’s account of ontological individuation and actualization. Zavota notes that, despite its widespread acceptance as a Plotinian concept, Plotinus himself acknowledges the inadequacy of the language of emanation. Rather, just as Deleuze’s virtual Idea does not impose order upon the plane of consistency but instead simply indicates divergent lines of generation, Plotinus’ One does not predetermine the organization of things from above. Instead, the variety of generated objects, from the Intellect down to the barest material particulars, self-organize through the inherently generative operation of contemplation or turning towards the One. Thus contemplation is an act of differentiation, and Plotinus’ philosophy can be read as a counter-Platonism or divergent-Platonism.

Wynn, Mark R. Spiritual Traditions and the Virtues. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198862949.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book develops a philosophical appreciation of the spiritual life. Specifically, it aims to show how a certain conception of spiritual good, one that is rooted in Thomas Aquinas’s account of infused moral virtue, can generate a distinctive vision of human life and the possibilities for spiritual fulfilment. Among other matters, the text examines the character of the goods to which spiritual traditions are directed; the structure of such traditions, including the connection between their practical and creedal commitments; the relationship between the various vocabularies that are used to describe, from the insider’s perspective, progress in the spiritual life; the significance of tradition as an epistemic category; and the question of what it takes for a spiritual tradition to be handed on from one person to another. So, while the discussion aims to make some contribution to the discipline that we standardly call the philosophy of religion, it has a rather different focus from some familiar ventures in the field, in so far as it starts from a consideration of the nature of spiritual goods and of traditions that seek to cultivate such goods. In his account of the virtues, Aquinas suggests how it is possible for our relations to the everyday world to be folded into our relations to the divine or sacred reality otherwise understood. In this sense, he is offering a vision of how it is possible to live between heaven and earth. This book considers how that vision may be extended across the central domains of human thought and experience, and how it can deepen and diversify our understanding of what it is for a human life to be lived well.

Katsafanas, Paul. Constitutivism about Practical Reasons. Edited by Daniel Star. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199657889.013.17.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter introduces constitutivism about practical reason, which is the view that we can justify certain normative claims by showing that agents become committed to these claims simply in virtue of acting. According to this view, action has a certain structural feature—a constitutive aim, principle, or standard—that both constitutes events as actions and generates a standard of assessment for action. We can use this standard of assessment to derive normative claims. In short, the authority of certain normative claims arises from the bare fact that we are agents. This chapter explains the constitutivist strategy, surveys the extant attempts to generate constitutivist theories, and considers the problems and prospects for the theory.

Radcliffe, Elizabeth S. Morality and Motivation. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199573295.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
Hume’s argument against moral rationalism says that because morals produce or prevent actions, and reason alone does not, morals cannot be derived from reason alone. The premise concerning morality is perplexing. This premise is best understood as claiming that the moral sentiments by which we judge virtue and vice produce motives when we find ourselves deficient of a morally-approved trait, or when we anticipate the pleasure of self-approval for exhibiting virtues. These motives are produced by self-approbation and self-disapprobation in the same way that motives are typically generated in Hume’s theory: a person retains an idea of a source of pleasure or displeasure and reacts to it with an impression of reflection. Hume’s sentimentalism is a way of explaining how normative concepts originate in impressions rather than in ideas; although internalist, it is consistent with cognitivism, since motives come from the discernment of morality, not from the ideas themselves.

Seth, Anil K. Consciousness. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199674923.003.0037.

Full text
Abstract:
Consciousness is perhaps the most familiar aspect of our existence, yet we still do not know its biological basis. This chapter outlines a biomimetic approach to consciousness science, identifying three principles linking properties of conscious experience to potential biological mechanisms. First, conscious experiences generate large quantities of information in virtue of being simultaneously integrated and differentiated. Second, the brain continuously generates predictions about the world and self, which account for the specific content of conscious scenes. Third, the conscious self depends on active inference of self-related signals at multiple levels. Research following these principles helps move from establishing correlations between brain responses and consciousness towards explanations which account for phenomenological properties—addressing what can be called the “real problem” of consciousness. The picture that emerges is one in which consciousness, mind, and life, are tightly bound together—with implications for any possible future “conscious machines.”

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the subject of the free or servile beginnings of Florence, and analyses the path taken by Machiavelli in the Discourses and the Histories. Despite historical appearances, which showed Florence to be totally servile and thus condemned to not being free, Machiavelli’s analysis demonstrates that the city was constructed by people who were partly servile and partly free, and its virtue expressed itself in the struggles against fortune, even if they generated political instability. The comparison between tumults that made Rome great and struggles that characterized the history of Florence was used by Machiavelli to distinguish between the different situations of the two cities and to show that Florence should not imitate the constitution of Rome but instead create its own way of exploiting the virtue generated by its own struggles.

Abstract:
At the core of this work lie the oneness hypothesis, which is not a single theory but a family of views found in different forms in a wide variety of disciplines, and its implications for theories of virtue and human happiness. The oneness hypothesis concerns the nature of the world, but it entails a view about the nature of the self and its relationship to other people, creatures, and things. Its core assertion is that we are inextricably intertwined with other people, creatures, and things. The connections the oneness hypothesis advocates are specifically those that conduce to the health, benefit, and improvement of both individuals and the larger wholes of which they are parts. The relational view of the self at the heart of the oneness hypothesis offers an alternative to more individualistic accounts. This new view of the self is a more expansive conception of the self, a self that is less self-centered and instead is seen as intimately connected with other people, creatures, and things. A central claim of this work is that a proper understanding of the underlying oneness of the world will lead one to a greater awareness and appreciation of innate inclinations and resources that when fully developed generate a distinctive set of virtues. A life guided by such virtues enables one to locate oneself within grand natural and social orders that facilitate greater spontaneity, security, and metaphysical comfort, resulting in a special, resilient, and enduring form of happiness.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the shifting dynamics of the magazine producer–consumer relationship within two different industrial contexts. First, it considers how media producers are making their offerings for audiences more interactive by integrating commentary, advice, photos, and more. It situates this trend in historical perspective by recalling women's magazines' tradition of “inviting readers in.” Second, it looks at an external force encroaching on magazine production: the rise of fashion blogging. It also describes the labor politics of user-generated content and goes on to discuss how various industry insiders conceptualize fashion blogging, along with industrial and organizational trends that seem to respond to this cultural movement. The chapter shows that media producers are “inviting audiences in” to numerous spaces that they have carved out within magazine-branded properties. Community chat rooms, virtual programs, and user-generated contests engage interactive consumers while supplanting the work of professional content producers. Although editors of women's magazines maintain control over these initiatives, they have unequivocally less power over fashion bloggers.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses recent and future developments in horror entertainment. It argues that future horror media will give consumers access to a wider range of experiences, some of which are more immersive and much more emotionally powerful than those offered by traditional horror media. The chapter analyzes horror videogames such as Until Dawn (2015), as well as so-called survival horror games such as Amnesia: The Dark Descent (2010), which foster immersion through interaction, and immersive virtual reality, which increases the sense of presence in a frightening computer-generated world. The chapter also analyzes haunted attractions and live-action horror experiences which situate consumers as protagonists in horror stories that unfold around them. Finally, the chapter argues that horror research needs to engage more actively with science, in theory as well as method.

Weimann, Gabriel. Terrorism and Counterterrorism on the Internet. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acrefore/9780190846626.013.420.

Full text
Abstract:
The internet has emerged as an important medium for terrorists. Two key trends can be discerned from cyberterrorism: the democratization of communications driven by user generated content on the internet, and modern terrorists’ growing awareness of the internet’s potential for their purposes. The internet has become a favorite tool of the terrorists because of the many advantages it provides, such as easy access; little or no regulation, censorship, or other forms of government control; potentially huge audiences spread throughout the world; anonymity of communication; fast flow of information; interactivity; inexpensive development and maintenance of a Web presence; a multimedia environment; and the ability to influence coverage in the traditional mass media. These advantages make the network of computer-mediated communication ideal for terrorists-as-communicators. Terrorist groups of all sizes maintain their own websites to spread propaganda, raise funds and launder money, recruit and train members, communicate and conspire, plan and launch attacks. They also rely on e-mail, chatrooms, e-groups, forums, virtual message boards, and resources like YouTube, Facebook, and Google Earth. Fighting online terrorism raises the issue of countermeasures and their cost. The virtual war between terrorists and counterterrorism forces and agencies is certainly a vital, dynamic, and ferocious one. It is imperative that we become better informed about the uses to which terrorists put the internet and better able to monitor their activities. Second, we must defend our societies better against terrorism without undermining the very qualities and values that make our societies worth defending.
