Abstract:
Palabras clave: Virgen María, apariciones, culto mariano, leyendas fundacionales, imágenes marianas, vírgenes milagrosas, virgen de Guadalupe, evangelización.**********************************************************Myths and realities about the origen of the worship of Guadalupe’s virginAbstract:The worship of the Guadalupe’s virgin has its origins from the remote Pre-Hispanic sanctuary established on the hill of Tepeyac, in the north of Mexico City, consecrated to the female god Tonatzin. Abstract:
Abstract1. Mixed sex groups of D. melanogaster were observed in large observation chambers in which food was available. The ratio of mated to virgin females was 3:1. 2. Fertilised females spent more time feeding than virgins and virgin flies spent more time in locomotor activity. 3. Most courtship behaviour took place on the food and consequently mated females received more courtships. 4. To test whether fertilised females were excluding virgin females from the food, groups of females without males were observed. The groups were composed either of virgin, or of a mixture of virgin and mated females. The results showed that even in the absence of fertilised females virgins fed less and were more active. There was no evidence that mated females excluded the virgins. 5. The adaptive significance of the observations is discussed in relation to dispersal from the site of eclosion, oviposition and remating.

Abstract:
Background Studies on virgins remain scarce. This study explores the characteristics of virgin young adults, the reasons for remaining virgin, and its potential social and health implications. Methods: Data were drawn from the 2017 Swiss study on sexual health and behaviour among young adults. A total of 5175 participants (mean age 26 years ± 0.01) were divided into virgins and non-virgins. Virginity was defined as never having had a sexual partner, defined as a person with whom the participant has had sexual contact with or without penetration. Results: A total of 275 (5.3% (95% CI: 4.7–6.0), 58% males) were virgins. Virgins had higher odds of being male (aOR: 2.27 (95% CI: 1.62–3.17)) and reporting poorer health (1.43 (1.07–1.92)). They had lower odds of living on their own (0.24 (0.18–0.32)), being satisfied with their social life (0.78 (0.72–0.85)), having experimented with substances (e.g. drunkenness, 0.27 (0.19–0.67)) and having used online dating (0.52 (0.26–1.12)) or pornography (0.67 (0.42–0.94)). The main reason for remaining virgin was ‘I have not found the right person’ for females, and ‘I have not had the occasion’ for males. Conclusions: Among young adults, 1 in 20 is a virgin. Virgins do not seem to have gone through the usual experimentations of adolescence, are less socially driven and reported more health challenges. The main reason for remaining a virgin reveals gender-stereotyped responses. Sexual inactivity among young adults should be considered by health professionals to ensure the absence of distress and open discussion for potential questions.

Abstract:
Female sagebrush crickets, Cyphoderris strepitans, feed on the male's hind wings during copulation. Because removal of hind wing material during mating may alter male acoustic signal characteristics and account for a virgin male mating advantage (Morris et al. 1989; Snedden, in press) we recorded virgin and mated males in the field, and virgins before and after surgical excision of a portion of the hind wings. We found no significant differences in signal spectral characteristics or pulse rate between virgin and mated males following hindwing excision. However, the signal amplitude of laboratory recorded virgins was greater than that of mated males, and song amplitude was reduced in manipulated males. In contrast, signal amplitude was lower in field recorded virgins than mated males.

Abstract:
The image referred to as Virgen de Quito, an art work by Bernardo de Legarda, sculptor and painter belonging to the Baroque Quito School of Art, is an artistic and religious referent for said city. It has been discussed whether the image is inspired in the Virgin of the Apocalypse, in the Immaculate Conception or in the Virgin of the Assumption. According to the author, complete identification between the Virgin of the Apocalypse and the Immaculate Conception is an iconographic synthesis originated in Spain by the end of the 16th Century. The same occurred later on with the advocation of the Virgin of the Assumption, which accepts the statement that Virgin Mary rose up to Heaven. Such dogma is very close to that of the Immaculate Conception. Therefore, it can be affirmed that any of the three aforementioned denominations applied to the Virgen de Quito may be correct. This paper also synthesizes which images are considered to be forerunners to this emblematic work of art, whose hybridization between the European and the Indigenous appears as a feature of our Baroque.

Full text
Abstract:
Earlier work showed that the number of eggs produced by a virgin female is smaller than that produced by a mated female. The current paper shows that this results not from a difference in rates of egg production, but from the operation of the same linear rate for different times. Denervating the corpus allatum in virgin females extends the time over which the same rate of egg production operates, thus indicating that the inhibition of egg production in virgin females results from a nervous inhibition of the corpus allatum. The initial rate of emptying of the crop is also approximately linear in both virgin and mated females. Later, crop emptying slows in virgins and remains linear in mated females. When these relationships are disturbed by plugging the anus of females before feeding, the rate of crop emptying in virgins more closely resembles that in mated females, and the difference in egg production between mated and virgin females disappears. These results are put into the context of a hypothesis which predicts that the degree of distension of the crop is an important determinant of the length of time that the corpus allatum remains active.

Abstract:
Endogenous opioid regulation of neurohypophysial and hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis hormone secretion in response to forced swimming (90 s in deep water at 19 degrees C) was investigated in virgin and 21-day-pregnant rats. There was no difference in basal plasma oxytocin concentrations between pregnant and virgin rats, but the opioid antagonist, naloxone, increased basal oxytocin secretion in the pregnant rats. Forced swimming increased oxytocin secretion similarly in pregnant and virgin rats, and this response was enhanced by naloxone. In pregnant rats naloxone had a greater effect (by 3.1-fold) than in virgins, showing stronger endogenous opioid restraint of an enhanced oxytocin secretory response to stress in pregnancy. Vasopressin secretion was not increased with forced swimming in virgin or pregnant rats, and naloxone had no effect. ACTH and corticosterone secretion in response to forced swimming was attenuated in pregnant rats compared to virgin rats, measured at 5 min. Naloxone had no effect on basal plasma ACTH or corticosterone concentration, but it reduced ACTH secretion in virgin rats 5 min after forced swimming; in pregnant rats naloxone had no such effect. Naloxone removed the pregnancy-related attenuation in corticosterone secretion measured at 5 min after forced swimming. Fifteen minutes after forced swimming, plasma corticosterone concentrations were not different between groups. In the late-pregnant rats, the increases in plasma ACTH and corticosterone induced by forced swimming were significantly prolonged compared to virgins. The results show that endogenous opioid inhibition emerges in pregnancy to restrict the responses of oxytocin neurones to a stressor. In contrast, the endogenous opioid enhancement of mechanisms regulating HPA axis secretory responses in virgin rats is not evident during pregnancy.

Full text
Abstract:
The present paper is focused on the problem of consecrated virginity. A consecrated virgin is a sign of Church’s love for Christ, what situates the consecrated virgin in the community of the Church essentially as a prophetic person and a kind of example for other faithful. Her virginity, which is her characteristic feature, is for her both a gift from God and a task to realize within her vocation. Consecration of a virgin means the establishment of a spousal covenant between her and Christ. Therefore the first paragraph focuses the attention on Christ as a Bridegroom both of the Church and of every Christian, and finally of every consecrated virgin. The second paragraph discusses the virginity as a gift both to Mary and to the Church, as well as to the consecrated virgin. The third paragraph deals with the tasks of the consecrated virgin resulting from her virginity. The present paper is the ninth Author’s publication concerning the individual forms of consecrated life. The presented viewpoint is a formational proposition for both consecrated virgins and candidates for consecration.

Abstract:
Laboratory exercises using Drosophila crosses are an effective pedagogical method to complement traditional lecture and textbook presentations of genetics. Undergraduate thesis research is another common setting for using Drosophila. A significant barrier to using Drosophila for undergraduate teaching or research is the time and skill required to accurately collect virgins for use in controlled crosses. Erroneously collecting males or nonvirgin females contaminates crosses with unintended genotypes and confounds the results. Collecting adequate numbers of virgins requires large amounts of time, even for those skilled in virgin collection. I have adapted an effective method for virgin collection that eliminates these concerns and is straightforward to use in undergraduate settings. Using a heat-shock–induced, conditional lethal transgene specifically in males, male larvae can be eliminated from a culture before adults eclose. Females thus eclose in the absence of males and remain virgin, eliminating the need to laboriously score and segregate freshly eclosed females. This method is reliable, easily adaptable to any desired phenotypic marker, and readily scaleable to provide sufficient virgins for large laboratory classes or undergraduate research projects. In addition, it allows instructors lacking Drosophila expertise to use this organism as a pedagogical tool.

Pollack, Alexander Gregory. "Half-virgin." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2011. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5010.

Full text
Abstract:
Half-Virgin is a cross-genre collection of essays, short stories, and poems about the humor, pain, and occasional glory of journeying into adulthood but not quite getting there. The works in this collection seek to create a definition of a term, "half-virgin," that I coined in the process of writing this thesis. Among the possibilities explored are: an individual who embarks upon sexual activity for the first time and does not achieve orgasm; an individual who has reached orgasm through consensual sexual activity, but has remained uncertain about what he or she is doing; and the curious sensation of being half-child, half-adult. Ultimately, I believe, a "half-virgin" possesses all of these traits. One of the goals of the collection is to scramble the prototypical coming-of-age story into bits and parts and halves. Among the approaches included are earnest memoir (the real and metaphorical costumes a young couple wears on Halloween), character-driven fiction (the life story of Marlow, a college track star who ends up the unwitting inspiration for Super Mario Brothers), and narrative experiments (a tongue-in-cheek creative writing syllabus and a bullet pointed resume of sexual conquests). By exploring the untidy fragments in love, lust, and human connection in these works, Half-Virgin aspires to find wholeness through the jagged adventures of growing up.

Abstract:
'The virgin, the temptress and the godess' is a visual exploration of love, longing and beauty from the carnal though to the sublime. The narrative of the research has several subtexts: one that explores female archetypes, the muse as figurative source of inspiration and also beauty as a transcendental catalyst. I have sought to represent a comprehensive vision of the female muse that embraces both the spiritual and the sensual and explores the duality of corporeal and metaphysical yearning. This is done through photographic imagery; the journey that it evokes is an interior landscape that takes place in the purgatory that is longing and ascends to a sublime state of stillness and peace through the experience of the divine.

The US Virgin Islands must face drastic changes to its electrical system. There are two problems with electricity production in the USVI-it's dirty and it's expensive. Nearly one hundred percent of the electricity in these islands comes from imported diesel, brought in by ship. Expensive fuel and inefficient power generation facilities have caused residential electricity rates to soar to $0.58 per kWh-five times the national average.' These electricity prices are causing businesses to close their doors and residents to camp in the dark in their own homes because they are unable to pay the bills. This must change. Electricity prices must come down, else risk political and economic disaster. The thesis proposes a set of policies to help USVI get cleaner as its energy gets cheaper. Nearly year-round, the Caribbean sun shines and the Trade Winds blow, yet both are virtually unused. The USVI is in a position to be a world leader in clean energy. The USVI government has demonstrated its commitment to this role as a clean energy leader. In 2009, Governor John P. DeJongh passed Act 7075, creating an ambitious renewable energy standard. By 2025, the USVI will reduce fossil fuel use by 60 percent. Having committed itself, the USVI must determine how it may meet this goal. In this paper, I analyze the issues and propose specific paths towards the USVI clean energy future.

Abstract:
This study concerns two women who were religiously active either side of the Great Schism (1378–1417), a period of intensification of the excesses of personal pride and political ambition that divided the western Church and caused distress to devoted, thoughtful laity and clerics alike. Devout laity sought new expressions of piety in these stressful times and through examining the written legacies of two non-enclosed religious women, Caterina Benincasa and Margery Kempe, I explore not only the contemplative/devotional practices that characterise them, but also the clerics upon whom they relied for protection, support and guidance in male-dominated, strife-ridden medieval Europe. The two women, a northern Italian lifelong virgin for Christ and an East Anglian mother of fourteen children, prima facie, appear to have little in common except claimed illiteracy, a diversity of influences and acknowledging Bridget of Sweden as a fundamental inspirational source. However, both of their personal and literary management teams included members of several religious orders and their written productions were mostly dictated to and edited by men. They both negotiated their ecclesiastical acceptance from the position of institutionally inferior women through the exclusively female rôles of mother/sister/daughter in exerting influence over their father/brother/son managers through confronting them with their male self-images. Although the management practices applied in each case were very different in terms of structure and hierarchical level, the women‘s negotiations with the men followed similar lines, albeit through different written media. Caterina‘s negotiating techniques are found in the immediate medium of her letters and they involve persuasion and instruction as she tries to create situations that she can control in furtherance of her objectives. The study includes a selection of twelve letters that I have translated in full and analysed from the perspective of the register of the dialogues, the style and the imagery contained therein. Evidence of Margery Kempe‘s influence over her managers, including her husband, comes solely from the medium of the retrospective narrative of her Book in which she chooses the events that illustrate how she reacts to and manipulates people and situations to her advantage. The clerical managers were responsible for keeping their head-strong charges compliant with ever-changing contemporary views of orthodoxy within parameters negotiated between the women and the institutional church. Although there are clear, identifiable parallels between the managers in their styles and techniques, there are also differences rooted in the managers‘ perceptions of the two women‘s respective contributions to the furtherance of institutional aims. Caterina‘s situation was that of a woman whose institutional support was considered necessary at the highest levels of the Church‘s management structure. In Margery Kempe‘s case the management seemed to use her to develop aspects of their local inter-institutional competition for status and alms in Lynn. Despite this difference in influential level there is the strong probability of personal contact and shared theological academic backgrounds among the clerics that draws the teams together. This study concentrates primarily on comparing and contrasting the subtleties of the negotiations between each woman and her managers, negotiations which are often influenced by the women‘s introduction of the transcendental force of God‘s will as revealed only to them, and secondarily on the possible connections between the managers that link England to Italy, Lynn to Siena and Margery to Caterina. The management techniques revealed are independent of any connections between the managers and there is little by way of common techniques apart from the complexities of reciprocal management and the women‘s exploitation of male conceptions of what is appropriate to themselves (the managers) and to women in the Church.

Abstract:
Abstract. Different mechanically recycled PET issuing from different countries of origin have been studied and compared to a neat one, as a reference. Strech ability above glass transition temperature was explored towards uni-axial tensile experiments or injection stretch blow moulding (ISBM) tests. It has been shown in that study that rPETs and virgin do present global mechanical behaviours. This similar trend is obvious either in low or large deformations domains. Master curves built for the 5 grades indicated equivalent behaviour between the grades from the glassy to the rubbery state. A controlled stretching campaign confirmed that all grades present visco-hyperelastic behaviours that are similar until the deformation for which the materials start to strain-harden. Uni-axial tensile tests were proved to be efficient to discriminate all grades especially regarding the Natural Draw Ratio (NDR) onset of all grades. The virgin PET does present a lower NDR that comforts the fact that strain-induced crystallization can be easier in the virgin case. This test campaign analysis is confirmed by the injected preforms blowing process where the virgin case grade develops lower blowing volumes because of a sooner NDR. It highlights the fact that forming behaviours of rPET must be slightly adapted compared to virgin PET. For rPET, the effects of loss of molar mass combined with the presence of contaminants could be at the origin of these discrepancies.

Abstract:
Abstract This study investigates virgin and recycled high-density polyethylene/multi-walled carbon nanotube (HDPE/MWCNT) composites using thermo-physical and mechanical characterization techniques to generate knowledge and understand recyclability of these composites. Firstly, virgin samples with 0.1–5 wt.% of MWCNTs were prepared by injection molding. Then, the HDPE/MWCNT composite waste was mechanically recycled and consecutively reprocessed by injection molding. The experimental results show that, after the first mechanical recycling and reprocessing cycle, the thermal, rheological, mechanical, and electrical properties for the recycled and virgin HDPE/MWCNT composites with 0.1–3 wt.% were rather similar within the experimental error of the measurements. In contrast, the recycled HDPE/MWCNT composites with 5 wt.% showed a reduction in viscosity, mechanical and electrical properties with recycling. After four recycling and reprocessing cycles, degradation in the Young modulus (−35%), tensile strength (−25%), elongation at break (−60%) and electrical conductivity (−2 orders of magnitude) of the HDPE/MWCNT composite with 5 wt.% was observed as compared with the virgin composite. From an industrial perspective, it is feasible to recycle HDPE/MWCNT composite waste by mechanical recycling and use it to manufacture products with favorable mechanical properties, covering insulating, antistatic and semiconducting ranges depending on the MWCNT loading, owing to the protective effect of carbon nanotubes against thermomechanical degradation.

Mailer, Rodney, and STEFAN GAFNER. Olive Oil Laboratory Guidance Document. ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Prevention Program, March 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.59520/bapp.lgd/evfu8793.

Full text
Abstract:
Extra virgin olive oil is often described as the healthiest of all commercially available edible oils. Olive oil has a high percentage of monounsaturated fat and because it is generally consumed in the unrefined (virgin) crude state, the oil contains natural compounds which would otherwise be removed in refining. The high value of the virgin oil compared to refined seed oils make it highly susceptible to adulteration. This laboratory guidance document provides a review of (1) analytical methods used to determine whether olive products have been adulterated and, if so, (2) methods to identify the adulterants. As olive oil is frequently diluted with undeclared refined olive oil or degraded virgin olive oil, methods have been established to determine the quality of the oil’s freshness and compliance with international standards. Adulteration has also been observed in various vegetable oils including canola (Brassica napus, Brassicaceae), sunflower (Helianthus annuus, Asteraceae), and other oils. This document should be viewed in conjunction with the corresponding Botanical Adulterants Prevention Bulletin on olive oil published by the ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Prevention Program.
