Abstract:

German historians long assumed that the German Kingdom was created with Henry the Fowler's coronation in 919. The reigns of both Henry the Fowler, and his son Otto the Great, were studied and researched mainly through Widukind of Corvey's chronicle Res Gestae Saxonicae. There was one source on Ottonian times that was curiously absent from most of the serious research: Liudprand of Cremona's Antapodosis. The study of this chronicle leads to a reappraisal of the tenth century in Western Europe showing how mythology of the dynasty was constructed. By looking at the later reception (through later Middle Ages and then on 19th and 20th century historiography) the author showcases the longevity of Ottonian myths and the ideological expressions of the tenth century storytellers.

Abstract:

The Turkish reception of Virgil has a colourful history that started mainly during the decline of the multi-ethnic Ottoman Empire in the late nineteenth century. This may seem typical of Virgil’s initial reception by a culture, usually European, that relates primarily to his perceived idealism. However, closer study of this first period alone, which relies largely on French scholarship, reveals that factors other than cultural politics are at play. Right after the 1897 politico-literary ‘classics debate’ over the need for a literary canon for the new Turkish culture and its most suitable source, Öyken and Dürüşken observe a focus on Virgil’s poetics rather than on the political value of his work. Similarly, the first complete translation of Virgil (through an intermediary translation in French), published in 1929 as one of the first books in the newly adopted Latin alphabet, represents the beginning of a new era in more than one sense.

Abstract:

This chapter argues that German translations of Virgil are the result of a complicated process, in which history of reception and history of translations move alongside one another. It explores the interaction between translations of Virgil and translations of Homer, giving particular attention to the role of the authoritative translation of Homer by Johann Heinrich Voß. It demonstrates that the discourse on translations of Virgil since the eighteenth century is deeply entwined with literary, aesthetic, and political questions, which are closely entangled with the German struggle for unity and cultural identity. The chapter tries to show this by looking briefly at translations of the Aeneid beginning with Friedrich Schiller’s experimental work, focusing particularly on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Abstract:

The First Pagan Historian traces the reception history of a text that is now largely neglected but once occupied a central role in the ancient canon—the De excidio Troiae historia or History of the Destruction of Troy of one Dares Phrygius, who claimed to have been an eyewitness observer of the Trojan War. From late antiquity (when most scholars today now agree that the extant Latin version of the text was written) to the eighteenth-century Enlightenment, this study charts the many surprising twists and turns in the afterlife of an author long considered the first of the pagans to write history. It examines the subversive challenge that Dares posed to other ancient canonical traditions (especially the poetry of Homer and Virgil), and the manner in which Dares’s bold rewriting of the Troy story enabled centuries of postclassical readers to forge their own—sometimes radical—visions of the distant past. In doing so, The First Pagan Historian moves back and forth between the ancient world itself and various moments in the Middle Ages and the early modern period. The book uses the fortunes of a forged text to interrogate approaches to history, fiction, myth, philology, criticism, authorship, and numerous other topics of profound importance to the interplay between antiquity and modernity.

Geopolitics and its theoretical formation in the 19th and 20th centuries are still among the most controversial interdisciplinary fields of research today. The biogeographical works of the German geographer Friedrich Ratzel are of fundamental importance for the transformation process of large-scale thinking, ordering and acting. Ratzel is one of the key figures who linked the imperial idea of Lebensraum of the 19th century with the large-scale expansion and extermination concepts of the 20th century, as well as with geopolitical and biopolitical patterns of order that became effective worldwide after 1945. The volume ‘Denken im Raum’ analyses Ratzel's concepts of geography in the scientific context of the 19th century and thus provides key insights for international reception research into his complete works, which is still lacking. With contributions by Mark Bassin, Nicola Bassoni, Edoardo Boria, Patricia Chiantera-Stutte, Isabella Consolati, Ulrike Jureit, Ian Klinke, Matteo Marconi, Carlotta Santini, Hans-Dietrich Schultz and Niels Werber.

Abstract:

The collective monograph examines one of the least studied pages in the history of Russian literature of the 19th century — pre-symbolism. There are two versions of the approach to the pre-symbolism studies as an independent phenomenon are proposed in the book: “narrow” — consideration of the literary situation of the “timelessness” era of the 1870s-1880s, and “broad” — understanding of pre-symbolism as a special trend in Russian culture, which became a “bridge” connecting romanticism and symbolism. The following problems are discussed in the collective monograph are pre-symbolism – modernism – theory and individual practices; pre-symbolism as a phenomenon of Russian and European culture; pre-symbolism – predecessors and heirs; religious and philosophical aspects of the creativity of the pre-symbolists; the prosaic heritage of the pre-symbolist poets; poetics of A.K. Tolstoy, A.A. Fet, S.Ya. Nadson, K.K. Sluchevsky, Vl.S. Solovyov, A.A. Golenishchev-Kutuzov et al.; reception of pre-symbolists creativity in literature and criticism of the Symbolists (Andrei Bely, Fyodor Sologub) and the post-symbolists (Igor Severyanin, E. Zamyatin). For the first time, the book introduces archival materials from the epistolary and literary heritage of Vl. Solovyov, I.F. Annensky, A.L. Volynsky et al.
