Abstract:
Microplastics (MPs) pose biological and chemical hazards in aquatic and terrestrial food webs across the globe. Research on microplastic contamination has long focused on marine ecosystems, whereas the toxicological impact on freshwater organisms is still little explored. In this study, the lethal and sublethal response of the freshwater macroinvertebrate Hydropsyche pellucidula exposed to polypropylene MPs after different pre-conditioning treatments was assessed. Field samples were collected in a riverine system (Vipacco river; northeast Italy) to assess the characteristics of the MPs in the aquatic environment Both water and sediment were contaminated by MPs (3.73 ± 2.11 items m−3 per min and 3.33 ± 4.16 items dm−3, respectively). The chemical MPs composition included polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyurethane, polyamide, polypropylene, and polyethylene. Polypropylene (PP), although not the most abundant polymer recorded in the study area, was preferred over the other types according to its abundance in freshwater and H. pellucidula feeding behavior. A housing test was performed to recreate the natural conditions of larvae sampled for a reliable response to the ecotoxicological tests. The microplastics underwent either preconditioning with Vipacco River water (PP-river) and surfactant Triton X-100 (PP-sf) or no pre-treatment (PP). Submersion of microplastics in 10 µg L−1 of surfactant solution for 24 h was sufficient to induce consistent spectral changes and modify the chemical profile of the plastic surface. Mortality rate differed according to treatment: PP and PP-river > positive control > PP-sf > negative control. Integrated biomarker response (IBRv2) and analysis of oxidative stress biomarker levels showed a greater response of superoxide dismutase and lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde) in larvae treated with PP conditioned in surfactant. Our findings enhance knowledge on the toxicity of PP and conditioning phases on H. pellucidula larvae.

Abstract:
The study of the different hydrogeological compartments is a prerequisite for understanding and monitoring different fluxes, thereby evaluating the environmental changes in an ecosystem where anthropogenic disturbances are present in order to preserve the most vulnerable groundwaters from contamination and degradation. In many karst domains in the Mediterranean, areas groundwaters and surface waters are a single system, as a result of the features that facilitate the ingression of waters from surface to subsurface. This is also the case for the Classical Karst hydrostructure, which is a carbonate plateau that rises above the northern Adriatic Sea, shared between Italy and Slovenia. The main suppliers to the aquifer are the effective precipitations and the waters from three different rivers: Reka/Timavo, Soča/Isonzo and Vipava/Vipacco. Past and ongoing hydrogeological studies on the area have focused on the connections within the Classical Karst Region aquifer system through the analysis of water caves and springs hydrographs and chemographs. In this paper, the authors present new combined data from major ions, oxygen, hydrogen and strontium stable and radiogenic isotopes which have allowed a more complementary knowledge of the groundwater circulation, provenance and water-rock interactions. All the actions occurred in the framework of the European project HYDROKARST.

Abstract:
This paper discusses changes in the Roman mining policy that took place during the Empire, based on the provisions found on the second tablet of the Lex metallis dicta2 (Vip II, 1, 2,5,6,7,8,9) from Vipasca. The main stress is placed on the position, rights and obligations of the coloni and miners and the status of mining pits after their sale. By examining the efficiency of the indirect model of silver and lead exploitation in the mining district of Vipasca, the authors present their solution to the unresolved issue of the means by which the Roman state obtained large quantities of metals necessary for the operation of state-run factories and imperial mints.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: This article presents the main concepts that are related to Cyber-Archaeology: a recent development within archaeology that establishes a dialogue between Virtual Reality and archaeological works. First an overview of the history of cybernetics is presented in order to contextualize Virtual Reality. Then the real and virtual definitions are discussed. Finally, the cyberarchaeological practice (i.e. the dialogue between cybernetics and archeology) is presented through the Vipasca Antiga application: an interactive simulator about an ancient Roman mining area now belonging to the territory of Portugal, and the final product of my PhD research.

Abstract:
In order to understand the functioning of mining in ancient Rome, it is necessary to investigate the rules of classical and post-classical Roman law related to mines. Most of the mining information is extracted from the Lex Vipasca, the two bronze plates found in Aljustrelo in Portugal in 1876 and 1906. The first plate from Aljustrelo provided valuable information on the mining sale taxes, the auctioneer’s provision, the management of baths, shoemakers, barbers, metallurgy workers, mining waste tax, teachers and seizure of mines and receivables. The second plate from Aljustrelo defines the responsibilities of the procurator, the rights and obligations of the owner, the price of the mine, and tells us about the way of organizing the leaseholders in societies – societas. From the preserved provision of Codex Theodosianus (CTh.X.19.8.) we learn about the existence of specially separated rights related to the mining and exploitation rights. The aim of our work is, through analysis of the Aljustrelo plates, to show how far Roman law has defined all aspects of mining in detail and to show the functioning of the system starting from the formation, acquisition of property, business, control, disputes, and associated activities that were formed with mines. These two plates with Roman mining laws provide an inexhaustible study-basis for lawyers, as well as others dealing with Ancient Rome. In addition to the mentioned Lex Vipasca, some minor and later mining regulations have been briefly outlined to complement the picture of Roman mining law.

Abstract:
KULTURisk is an European project that aims to evaluate the benefit of risk prevention of water-related natural hazards (Balbi et al.,2012). In particular a Team that work at the Department of Economics of Cà Foscari has developed an integrated assessment methodology to estimate flood risk in a spatially explicit fashion. It is called SERRA methodology and comprises three tiers of analysis: 1)RRA (Regional Risk assessment which provides a physical/ environmental risk assessment; 2)the Social assessment aims at considering the benefits of the human dimension of vulnerability; 3)the Economic assessment which provides an economic evaluation of costs and benefits of different prevention measures This methodology should be a good guideline for its application to different case studies. In particular the case study that interest my work is about risk assessment in Vipacco river sub-catchment (at the border between Italy and Slovenia); Vipacco is an affluent of Isonzo, a river that flows into Mar Adriatico in the Golfo di Trieste. It is presented a spatial implementation of valuation algorithms in a GIS context.
