Abstract:
ABSTRACT SER virus, a paramyxovirus closely related to simian virus 5, induces no syncytium formation. The SER virus F protein has a long cytoplasmic tail (CT), and truncation or mutations of the CT result in enhanced syncytium formation (S. Seth, A. Vincent, and R. W. Compans, J. Virol. 77:167-178, 2003; S. Tong, M. Li, A. Vincent, R. W. Compans, E. Fritsch, R. Beier, C. Klenk, M. Ohuchi, and H.-D. Klenk, Virology 301:322-333, 2002). We hypothesized that the presence of the long CT serves to stabilize the metastable conformation of the F protein. We observed that the hemifusion, cytoplasmic content mixing, and syncytium formation ability of the wild-type SER virus F coexpressed with the SER virus hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) protein was enhanced, both qualitatively and quantitatively, at elevated temperatures. We also observed enhanced hemifusion, content mixing, and syncytium formation in SER virus F- and HN-expressing cells at reduced pH conditions ranging between 4.8 and 6.2. We have obtained evidence that in contrast to other paramyxoviruses, entry of SER virus into cells occurs by a low-pH-dependent process, indicating that the conversion to the fusion-active state for SER virus F is triggered by exposure to reduced pH.

Abstract:
AbstractThe small Van Gogh painting discussed in this article (fig. I) has never been published before. Originally, it belonged to Antoine Philippe Furnée (I86I-I897), whom Vincent had met in I883 in The Hague through Furnée père, the proprietor of a chemist's shop which also sold artists' paint. In the letters (365 (300), 372 (307) and 409 (342)) Furnée is referred to as 'the surveyor'. He was an amateur painter to whom Van Gogh gave advice. The two men would go out into the nearby countryside together to paint landscapes. In April I884 Furnee went to Java, where he remained until I897. He was probably already ailing on his return, for he died a few months later. His property passed to a brother, Antoine Louis Cornelis (I867-I965), a respected pharmacist of The Hague. The little painting, signed 'Vincent' at the bottom left, is done in oil on canvas pasted on cardboard, 30.5 by 23.I cm. Examination under fluorescent light shows it to be covered entirely with old varnish. On the back Furnée the pharmacist wrote: 'Chestnut tree on Broeksloot by Vincent van Gogh. This study was given by Vincent van Gogh to my brother A. Ph. Furnée (the surveyor)'. The gift accounts for the painting's being signed. Like many of the Hague paintings, this early work is of limited artistic merit. The poorly indicated space and forms are however offset by the good rendering of the contrast between light and dark areas. (Compare the paintings F 8a (fig. 3), F I92 (fig. 5) and the watercolour SD I680 (fig. 4).) The authenticity of the painting was established back in I963 in an appraisal by R. W. D. Oxenaar, and again at the Netherlands Institute for Art History by the present authors in I979, the year it was sold by the Furnee family. Two little pictures painted by Furnee on his expeditions with Vincent van Gogh come from the same source (figs. 6 and 7).

"Diagnostic Accuracy of CareStart™ Malaria HRP2 and SD Bioline Pf/PAN for Malaria in Febrile Outpatients in Varying Malaria Transmission Settings in Cameroon." Abstract:
Background: There was an increase in the number of malaria cases in Cameroon in 2018 that could reflect changes in provider practice, despite effective interventions. In this study, we assessed the diagnostic performance of two malaria rapid diagnostic tests (mRDTs) for diagnostic confirmation of suspected cases of malaria in public and private health facilities in two malaria transmission settings in Cameroon. Methods: We evaluated the diagnostic performance of CareStart pf and SD Bioline Pf/PAN mRDT and compared these parameters by RDT type and transmission setting. Nested PCR and blood film microscopy were used as references. The chi square test was used for independent sample comparisons, while the McNemar’s test was used to test for the dependence of categorical data in paired sample testing. A p < 0.05 was considered significant in all comparisons. The R (v.4.0.2) software was used for analyses. Results: A total of 1126 participants consented for the study in the four sites. The diagnostic accuracy of the CareStart Pf mRDT was 0.93.6% (0.911–0.961) in Yaoundé, 0.930% (0.90–0.960) in Ngounso, 0.84% (0.794–0.891) in St Vincent Catholic Hospital Dschang and 0.407 (0.345–0.468) in Dschang district hospital. For SD Bioline Pf/PAN the accuracy was 0.759 (0.738–0.846) for St Vincent Catholic Hospital Dschang and 0.426 (0.372–0.496) for the Dschang district hospital. The accuracy was slightly lower in each case but not statistically different when PCR was considered as the reference. The likelihood ratios of the positive and negative tests were high in the high transmission settings of Yaoundé (10.99 (6.24–19.35)) and Ngounso (14.40 (7.89–26.28)) compared to the low transmission settings of Dschang (0.71 (0.37–1.37)) and St Vincent Catholic hospital (7.37 (4.32−12.59)). There was a high degree of agreement between the tests in Yaoundé (Cohen’s Kappa: 0.85 ± 0.05 (0.7–0.95)) and Ngounso (Cohen’s Kappa: 0.86 ± 0.05 (0.74, 0.97)) and moderate agreement in St Vincent hospital Dschang (k: 0.58 ± 0.06 (0.44–0.71)) and poor agreement in the District Hospital Dschang (Cohen’s Kappa: −0.11 ± 0.05 (−0.21–0.01)). The diagnostic indicators of the SD Bioline Pf/PAN were slightly better than for CareStart Pf mRDT in St Vincent Catholic hospital Dschang, irrespective of the reference test. Conclusions: Publicly procured malaria rapid diagnostic tests in Cameroon have maintained high accuracy (91–94%) in the clinical diagnosis of malaria in high malaria transmission regions of Cameroon, although they failed to reach WHO standards. We observed an exception in the low transmission region of Dschang, West region, where the accuracy tended to be lower and variable between facilities located in this town. These results underscore the importance of the routine monitoring of the quality and performance of malaria RDTs in diverse settings in malaria endemic areas.

Abstract:
In this paper we will discuss some of the issues related to the attempts of Ralph Howard Fowler and Nevil Vincent Sidgwick to create a legitimizing space for quantum and theoretical chemistry in Britain. Although neither Fowler nor Sidgwick made original contributions to quantum chemistry, they followed closely the developments in the discipline, participated in meetings and discussions and delivered lectures, talks and addresses, where methodological topics, ontological questions and implicitly the problem of autonomy of the new discipline vis-à-vis both physics and chemistry were taken to be pressing issues. In particular, they encouraged young people to work within the nascent discipline. Viewing quantum chemistry as a branch of applied mathematics became an emblematic characteristic of the practice of the new discipline in Great Britain.

Abstract:
Martin Wight once claimed there was no international political theory worthy of the name. In this I believe he was mistaken. But he also maintained, as Benedict Kingsbury and Adam Roberts put it, that ‘the most fundamental question you can ask in international theory is, What is international society? Hedley Bull likewise drew a basic distinction, as several contributors to the volume edited by J. D. B. Miller and the late R. J. Vincent remind us, between the system of states and the society of states. Each of these volumes takes up Wight's question and explores Bull's distinction in various ways, most of them engaging and enlightening. For an overview of the main approaches and controversies in the study of normative international relations today one could scarcely do better than consult them.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Paramyxoviruses enter cells by fusing their envelopes with the plasma membrane, a process that occurs at neutral pH. Recently, it has been found that there is an exception to this dogma in that a porcine isolate of the paramyxovirus parainfluenza virus 5 (PIV5), known as SER, requires a low-pH step for fusion (S. Seth, A. Vincent, and R. W. Compans, J. Virol. 77: 6520-6527, 2003). As a low-pH activation mechanism for fusion would greatly facilitate biophysical studies of paramyxovirus-mediated membrane fusion, we have reexamined the triggering of the PIV5 SER fusion protein. Using multiple assays, we could not find a requirement for low-pH triggering of PIV5 SER fusion. The challenge of discovering how the paramyxovirus receptor binding protein (HN, H, or G) activates the metastable fusion protein to cause membrane fusion at neutral pH remains.

Abstract:
Three-dimensional surgical simulation, already in use for hepatic surgery, can be used in pancreatic surgery. However, some problems still need to be overcome to achieve more precise pancreatic surgical simulation. The present study evaluates the performance of SYNAPSE VINCENT® (version 6.6, Fujifilm Medical Co., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan) in the semiautomated surgical simulation of the pancreatic parenchyma, pancreatic ducts, and peripancreatic vessels using an artificial intelligence (AI) engine designed with deep learning algorithms. One-hundred pancreatic cancer patients and a control group of 100 nonpancreatic cancer patients were enrolled. The evaluation methods for visualizing the extraction were compared using the Dice coefficient (DC). In the pancreatic cancer patients, tumor size, position, and stagewise correlations with the pancreatic parenchymal DC were analyzed. The relationship between the pancreatic duct diameter and the DC, and between the manually and AI-measured diameters of the pancreatic duct were analyzed. In the pancreatic cancer/control groups, the pancreatic parenchymal DC and pancreatic duct extraction were 0.83/0.86 and 0.84/0.77. The DC of the arteries (portal veins/veins) and associated sensitivity and specificity were 0.89/0.88 (0.89/0.88), 0.85/0.83 (0.85/0.82), and 0.82/0.81 (0.84/0.81), respectively. No correlations were observed between pancreatic parenchymal DC and tumor size, position, or stage. No correlation was observed between the pancreatic duct diameter and the DC. A positive correlation (r = 0.61, p<0.001) was observed between the manually and AI-measured diameters of the pancreatic duct. Extraction of the pancreatic parenchyma, pancreatic duct, and surrounding vessels with the SYNAPSE VINCENT® AI engine assumed to be useful as surgical simulation.

Abstract:
An experimental trawl survey was conducted in the Bay of St Vincent between December 1984 and April 1986. In all, 85 hauls were performed during four cruises. The trawled fish represented 233 species and 59 families. Biomass and density estimates declined 13-fold between the first and last cruises. This decline is not due to the survey catch (less than 2% of the biomass of the bay), nor is it likely to be due to trawling-induced changes in habitat. Natural causes are the most likely reason for the decline. The r-type species (Leiognathidae, Lethrinus nematacanthus) had the largest population fluctuations, whilst longer living and later reproducing species (Saurida undosquamis, large Upeneus spp.) had the smallest. Trophic structure is studied using three expressions: number of species, biomass and density per trophic group. Number of species per trophic group was the most insensitive to changes in time and place, with density being the most sensitive. Study of the variations in trophic structure could help with the monitoring of major changes in fish populations caused by fishing or environmental changes.

Abstract:
AbstractCharles Peirce provided a few, but interesting we believe, remarks about metaphor. Aristotle on the other hand developed a theory of metaphor that, to this day has been, and still is, influential (even though his theory, especially within recent years, also has been heavily criticized, e.g., by Lakoff, George & Mark Johnson. 1980. Metaphors we live by. Chicago: Chicago University Press). Factor, Lance R. 1996. Peirce’s definition of metaphor and its consequences. In Vincent Colapietro & Thomas Olshewsky (eds.), Peirce’s doctrine of signs: Theory, applications, and connections, 229–235. Berlin/New York: Mouton De Gruyter, as one of very few scholars, makes a comparison between Peirce and Aristotle. Factor claims that Peirce’s definition of metaphor and its consequences undermine and overturn Aristotle’s theory. We do not believe that Factor is right; and this is due to Factor’s misinterpretation of key elements within Aristotle’s theory. We rather believe that Peirce and Aristotle, in fact, have central ideas in common concerning metaphor; perhaps, in particular, when it comes to the function of metaphor. Hence, both see, for example, metaphor as a cognitive mechanism. The article tries to develop this argument.

Abstract:
Objectives: To investigate pre- and post-operative renal global function and renal parenchymal volume (RPV) in both partial nephrectomy (PN) and radical nephrectomy (RN) utilizing film-based technology. Patients and Methods: The patient cohort consisted of 81 and 82 cases with T1 tumors (≤ 7 cm) treated by PN and RN, respectively. Renal global function was assessed using the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and RPV was measured using a Synapse Vincent volumetric analyzer which creates a reconstructed image from a computed tomography scan. Renal global function and RPV were evaluated pre-operatively and 6 months post-operatively. Results: The percent eGFR decline of PN cases was significantly reduced compared with RN cases (p < 0.0001). Post-operative RPV of the contralateral side was significantly increased compared with pre-operative RPV (p < 0.0001) in RN cases. The percent change of the contralat-eral side RPV was slightly increased in RN compared with PN cases (p = 0.1881). A strong positive correlation was noted between post-operative eGFR and post-operative total RPV (r = 0.69, p < 0.0001), and a strong negative correlation was noted between percent eGFR decline and post-operative total RPV (r = -0.63, p < 0.0001). Conclusions: Prominent compensatory renal hypertrophy occurred within 6 months after RN. Post-operative renal functional outcome was closely correlated with the post-operative total RPV. In addition to RPV, further studies to unravel post-operative renal function from multifactorial aspects including surgical factors and intrinsic medical disease should be performed in the future.
