Full textMany fields of applications use spatial representations. This is the case of architecture, town planning or geography. The acquisition of these spatial datas in town planning these last years has experienced a significant progress with the introduction of new instruments. This acquisition allows to get urban support analysis at different levels of details and for different purposes. This thesis proposes an approach to combine two disciplines, the urban typomorphology and geomatics. We have explained the central notion of morphological process, the different steps of operation peculiar to the historical analysis for the treatment of map datas with the GIS instrument, primarily our work consist to explore the GIS contribution to the historical data treatment and analysis. We focused particularly on the approach to complete typomorphological potential interpretive and descriptive. Our thesis work has been made from different stages, we can mention the construction of a formal classification, concepts related to the historical development and morphology of Constantine and Aix-en-Provence. Starting from this urban history compare the two cities has established a chronology of the evolution of urban forms, to better understand the challenges each of these latter. Specifically, this work allows us to contribute to improving the mastery of the urban project. Finally tracks are proposed to continue this work by exploiting the platform exploration of 3D representation proved very useful for making historical analysis

Full textEconomic and social changes of old industrial societies have contributed to the transformation of the downtown of many cities. The centripetal flow of capital and population has initiated and intensified in recent decades. The suburbs of cities, initially so attractive, seems to decline for a new type of population who prefers the downtown way of life. This is gentrification. Barcelona, and most recently Marseille, have not escaped this dynamic. Firstly, based on interdisciplinary works, this thesis proposes to record the definition of the process and to grasp the steps and procedures in the field. However, this study leads us to understand the gentrification as an aspect of metropolization, in its economic, urban, social, political and cultural dimensions. Since the 1990s, what have the changes been, that allow us to affirm that "a back to the city" is running? A quantitative approach based on an extensive statistical corpus and the confrontation of these statistical results of the qualitative data, we can answer this question, while revealing an idiosyncratic reality that questions the theory. Finally, the modes and rates of development of a process that is no longer confined to the old and central areas but spreads by capillary action in the inner-suburbs, demonstrates in both north -Mediterranean cities, that there is not one process of gentrification but differentiated processes

Full textAs a privileged space for the manifestation of social inequalities, the city is often divided into neighborhoods that vary significantly in terms of the socio-economic resources of their inhabitants. This division of urban space based on these resources is sometimes described as a form of social segregation within the city. This socio-spatial segregation is frequently described in social science literature through the measurement of differences between neighborhoods. Without denying this urban reality, this thesis focuses on i sub-municipal divisions (here understood as IRIS units) where significant income disparities among residents are observed. This phenomenon, described here as the internal socio-economic polarization of these IRIS units, is measured using two indexes (indexes of wealth and poverty) constructed from available income deciles per consumption unit. Initially, we identify the IRIS units most affected by this internal socio-economic polarization in 14 French provincial metropolitan areas. A principal component analysis at the IRIS level allows for dentifying the housing and population characteristics associated with the internal socio-economic polarization of the IRIS units. Subsequently, this research concentrates on the three metropolitan areas of the French Mediterranean coast — Montpellier, Marseille, and Nice — whose diversity allows for a better examination of the local specificities of internal socio-economic polarization. We also attempt to understand the recent trends in these "polarized" neighborhoods in terms of income distribution and formulate hypotheses regarding the origins of the strong internal socio-economic polarization in these neighborhoods (early stages of gentrification, ongoing or incomplete gentrification; pauperization; sustainable cohabitation)

Full textWhilst there seems to be a consensus on the feasibility of applying sustainability thinking to town and city development, our research contributes to the critical understanding of the notion of a sustainable city within the field of urban planning. We will begin with a study of the modalities of the emergence of this term, combining it with an analysis of the ways in which the notion is used in professional and scientific literature. Following on from the correspondence drawn between "méditerranéité" and complex thinking (MORIN 1999), our approach will then be embodied in the heart of a Mediterranean city : Marseille. Considering the mental pictures conjured up by the notion of sustainable city, we thus analyse the ways in which the elements of meaning previously highlighted are being used or not, interpreted, or even diverted, and how they influence decisions and actions. As the object of our work is the relationship between these and their material, socio-spatial and experiential impact, we then go on to conduct a sensitive exploration using observations and stories told by local residents within a sector in which actualisation principles are relating to the idea of sustainable city. This research shows, in the end, how the notion of sustainable city, which is exogenous to the domain of urban planning, does not offer a sufficiently emancipating or robust framework to allow the development of new “knowledge and know-how” or to outweigh the constraints and forceful trends that hinder the development of the town. This leads us to propose an "ecological" approach to explore what and whose contributions urban sustainability or rather sustainabilities might be built upon

Full textTo reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption in urban areas, understanding buildings' energy performance and consumption patterns is essential for implanting effective energy management and efficiency strategies at a city scale. Such plans' implementation at large scale requires information on how the energy demands may change under specific interventions. Urban Building Energy Models (UBEM) are proposed tools to estimate current and future building's energy demand. These models rely on a bottom-up approach, combining both statistical techniques and physics-based methods. This study aims at providing an enhanced modeling approach that simulates buildings' energy demand at high spatial and temporal resolution, which can help in evaluating energy management strategies and decision-making energy policies. The methodology is applied for the city of Beirut, representative of the Mediterranean region where the similarity of buildings technologies and climatic concerns among its cities is pronounced. The main objectives of the thesis are to develop, investigate and adjust a bottom-up energy modeling tool at urban scale; to provide evidence of the tool's suitability to support guidelines for future interventions; and finally to investigate the impact of the city's compactness on daylight availability and thus citizens' well-being. In this case study based on two different districts within the city, a near-city-scale building energy model, BEirut Energy Model BEEM, is generated to estimate the building's stock electricity consumption. To reduce the modeling and computation time, an archetypal classification of the buildings based on their types and periods of construction is adopted. The additional information required to generate the 3D model of the buildings are the number of floors, buildings' areas and a topographic map of the study areas. By coupling the models to the hourly weather conditions, the thermodynamic model of 3,630 buildings is simulated in EnergyPlus. Adapting the model to Beirut's occupancy and users' behaviors is crucial to enhance the reliability of BEEM. The availability of metered electricity data allows the model calibration, which is based on buildings' clustering and finding the clusters' coefficients representative of specific energy patterns. After the training phase, the model's accuracy in predicting electricity consumption is improved. Comparing the actual consumption and the calibrated results, the averaged absolute percentage error of the electricity consumption was reduced from 310% to 41% in district A and from 326% to 39% in district B. The calibrated model is combined with Geographic Information System (GIS) for a spatiotemporal distribution of energy demand patterns, which can help in assessing the most suitable intervention technologies

Full textExtending over more than 500 years, the Meroitic kingdom extended its influence to the edges of the Middle Nile. Although it is difficult to identify clearly the specific limits of the kingdom, it covered approximately one thousand five hundred kilometers from the Nile Valley, from the Egyptian border to south of the present city of Khartoum and peripheral territories east and west. The primary objective of this study is to understand the organization of the urban centers along the Nile in establishing comparisons between sites previously excavated, such as the Wad Ben Naga palace, palaces and mansions of the ancient capital of Meroe and the site of Mouweis currently excavated by the Louvre Museum. Although there is still little awareness of the political and cultural developments marking the middle of the first millennium BC -the birth of Meroitic empire- it is clear that a new conception of power emerged at this time. A new state is established, although its extent is still difficult to define. The great cultural diversity of this kingdom is made clear through its material and architecture, which has led to amazing regional particularities. Such examples are an excellent source of information on state control practiced in these areas. It seems that power is developed through major administrative and religious centers. The addition of new sites is also a great way to achieve a more accurate understanding of the organization of palaces and their implementation inside an urban network, but also their area of influence on the rest of the city

Full textAt the cross-road of the colonial history and immigration history in France, this PHD thesis proposes to address under a new angle the role of the Italians in the colonisation and settlement of the cities of Algerian western coastline, through the case of Annaba. It is based on a corpus of sources gathered in France (Paris, Aix-en-Provence, Toulon, Marseille), Italy (Rome, Puglia, Sardinia) and Algeria (Annaba, Constantine). A first axis is dedicated to the study of migration policies adopted in both sides of the Mediterranean Sea during the 19th century, which aimed at regulating and controlling the growing circulation between Italy and Algeria. The second axis deals with the modalities of settlement of Italians in Annaba. Through a socio-quantitative study, the specificities of the settlement and integration of foreigners are studied from an urban and colonial perspective. The third axis addresses the status of the Italians in the Algerian colonial society of the inter-war period. It enables to place back Algeria in the African policy of the liberal and fascist Italy, and furthermore in the relationships between Italy and France in Maghreb

Full textThe french language novel often evokes the mediterranean town but it is less as a picturesque decor than as particuliar place where an area can be revealed and shows strange and bizarre human way, as oppose to what can be expected. Marseilles and Algiers, to some extend Nice and Oran, were or are privileged places of that peculiarity. From the first XIXth century novelists to Blaise Cendrars, Jean Giono, Albert Cohen, Jean-Marie Le Clézio - for Marseilles and Nice -, from Albert Camus to Boualem Sansal or Yasmina Khadra - for Algiers and Oran -, it is the same fascination for towns which seem to be uncommon. In the novel, that permanence expresses by narrations with stupefying topics with characters who are very far from classical heroes : degradation, dereliction, self hate are the rule, the mediterranean town seeming to lead to them

Full textUntil 1481, Marseilles is a part of an independant state, the county of Provence and it’s the biggest city, even if it’s not the capital. But, in 1481, the last count of Provence died without a son and he gives in his testament all his goods and territories to the king of France Louis XI. After that, Marseilles, like the rest of the former county is integrated in the French royal domain. But, in Provence the cultural and political structures and practices are different from the kingdom of France, and Marseilles belongs to a politico-cultural space where the political life is influenced by the model of “commune”, we can also see in the north of Italy. My aim in this thesis is to study the mobility between a politico-cultural space influences by the counts of Provence and the political structures and culture of the “commune” to a politico-cultural space dominated by the king of France thanks to a structure called “bonne ville”. I decided to study the council of the city which is the main structure of the municipal power and the leaders who are in this council in order to see the modifications after 1481 about the culture and the identity of this ruling class. I propose with this thesis an essay of cultural history of the municipal power. Each city is a political system, where different powers coexist. Those powers move and fix themselves towards the other ones. In the 1st part, I study how the municipal power becomes the most important one in Marseilles during the reign of René the 1st of Anjou. Then, in the second part, I study the leaders of the council, the foundations of their power and the modifications after 1481. Finally, in the 3rd part, I study the new ambitions of the leaders of Marseilles which lead in the 17th century to build a real thalassocracy in the Mediterranean world

Full textMurcia is a typpical peripheric city case of christian accident from the economical, social, political and cultural point of view. Its study give us with preciseness limits of its transformation into a "periphery", its modalities and chronology, set the responsabilities, years 1243-1430 present the fundamental military and pioneer phasis of peripheric murcian genesis. Development of the city and its area have been conditioned by gragility of ecological balance, moslem heritage, reconquest rupture, disorder of settlement and calamities of this period. Murcia endures an important chronical deficit in men. It accumulates delays and doesn't resist to dominations. Its agriculture and craft activities show us a recession and a devaluation. Its economy becomes more and more towards self-subsistance and sylvo-pastoral culture. The aristocratic condition of urban knighthood goes together with the oligarchic state of town-charges. The power elite maintains a preferential relation with the state and takes the choice of rent as an ideal

Its Topography, Its Urban, Social and Commercial History and Its WaqfsWaqf, the institution which played a primordial role in urban development and organisation of space in Ottoman-era cities, underlines relations between men and women and the built environment. Sfax is the example studied here and the role of waqf in intra and extramuros urban developmentIf the waqf documents represent a well-researched field nowadays, this is not the case for the study of the nature and typology of these documents nor for the terminology and diversity of information found within them. The PhD centers on the impact of waqf on the urban fabric of Ottoman Sfax from the end of the 16th century to the French colonisation. It studies urban life organised around places supported by waqf (mosques, zawiyas) as well as waqfs whose revenues supported society’s poor or the city infrastructure such as the maintenance of its walls.Furthermore, waqf participated in reinforcing the presence of European merchants and traders and the development of commercial life in Sfax

Full textThis creation/thesis revolves around a medium-length film – I Can Swim Home (I Can Swim Home), questioning the renewal of forms and the artist’s practice in a context of global crisis (environmental crises, health crisis, economical, political and institutional crisis.) What leads may art provide toward envisioning a communal horizon? How may art, through research and experimentation, contribute to invent tools and practical alternatives allowing us to renew our modes of exchanging, sharing, attention, and imagining? This research doesnot aim to make an inventory of forms throughout art history, but to underline what, in the patterns encountered therein, might reveal the artist’s desire to invoke the collective, and to invoke commonality as the nature of the work itself. I C S H aims to go back to one of art’s primary truth: the “inauguration” of an open community, relying upon both the ecological concern of the artist and their adhesion to an ethics of care. The work of the artist will therefore oscillate between the negative pole of the crisis of production/reproduction in the era of the Anthropocene, and the positive pole of a quest for an identity through the plurality of their environmental and social inscriptions. In line with this theoretical stance, through the multiplicity of practices it implements, I C S H constitutes an experiment in investigating “reconnection” (between the artist and the art world, between art and the living), situated in two Mediterranean sites, the Villa Arson and the Lerins Islands.I Can Swim Home is a multiform comprehensive work including a fictional film, a number of collective moments of intensification of the aesthetical experience, a research notebook documenting the artist’s intuitions and questioning, and a critical analysis of the artist’s practice, inviting entities and individuals to partake into the aesthetic invention
