Abstract:
Magnetic composites of soft magnetic FeGa particles embedded in a silicone matrix have been synthesized. The Villari effect has been studied depending on the size and concentration of the particles and on the magnetic state of the composite. The results indicate a decrease in the Villari effect when the concentration of the magnetic particles increases. These results suggest a relationship between the Villari effect and the mechanical properties of the composites. The Young’s modulus of the composites has been obtained by microindentation and their values related to the intensity and slope of the Villari signals. The results are explained on the basis that the reduction in the cross section of the composite when submitted to stress is the main origin of the variation of the magnetic flux in the Villari effect in this kind of composite. It has also been obtained that the magnetic state of the composite plays an important role in the Villari signal. When the magnetization of the composite is greater, the magnetic flux across the composite is greater too and, so, the same reduction in the cross section originates a greater Villari signal.

Abstract:

Staples, Stephen George Henry. "Using the Villari effect to detect anomalies in steel materials." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2017. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/19107/.

Full text
Abstract:
Magnetostriction in various metals has been known since 1842. Recently the focus has shifted away from ferrous metals, towards materials with a straightforward or exaggerated stress magnetostriction relationship. However, there is an increasing interest in understanding ferrous metal relationships, especially steels, because of its widespread use in building structures, transport and equipment and pipelines. The purpose of this PhD is to develop the relationship between stress and magnetisation for commercial steel, such that experimental determination and theoretical modelling will allow prediction and location of stress concentration zones, which can in turn be identified as defects within the material. Such defects are either expected, such as weld joints, or unexpected such as damage caused by pipeline corrosion or dents. This will serve to support a magnetic field measurement instrument, developed in University of Leeds Electrical Engineering, to allow non- invasive inspection of underground pipelines, and the detection of any defects using the technique of measuring Self Magnetic Flux Leakage (SMFL) from the pipe material. Extensive trials show reliable field performance, basic algorithms can estimate pipeline integrity. The prototype is being used commercially by the project sponsor, and is the subject of a patent. Experimental measurement of magnetic fields around stress concentration zones supports the development of a theoretical model which will enhance the operation of the prototype exploiting this magnetic technique. The hypothesis proposed is that the magnetic flux observed from SCZ (Stress Concentration Zone) in steel objects is because of a flux leakage mechanism from a SCZ, which could be due to a defect or anomaly. A simple magnetic model is proposed, where a pipeline is represented as a series of connected bar magnets, the joints or welds in the pipeline are discontinuities which create a magnetic field pattern in the pipe sections and at the weld joints. These areas can be modelled and located by characterizing each region as a dipole, with resulting characteristic magnetic field patterns, particularly when they are resolved into orthogonal components. Pipeline defects can be similarly modelled, and given this characteristic magnetic pattern, the SCZ area can be located by magnetometry. Analysis of the forward problem, predicting magnetic field from a given steel material stress state, has indicated that observed magnetic field from flux leakage is of the same magnitude as that calculated from the bulk flux of the steel object. This has led to the solution for the inverse problem of estimating material stress from the measured magnetic field from flux leakage of SCZ. Algorithms have been developed that allow the calculation of pipeline stress, the estimation of pipeline depth and correction for the direction of the pipeline. A simple depth algorithm is required to estimate the distance from the magnetic field measurement, to the SCZ, in this case the depth algorithm has been shown, by field trials, to have a standard error of +/- 40 cm with a 70 % confidence level. In addition, a stress algorithm has been developed, with an estimated standard error of +/- 15 MPa, and the algorithm is judged to be capable of estimating pipeline stress to +/- 20 % of the absolute value, whilst this is insufficient for a detailed determination of pipeline integrity, it is sufficient to indicate potential problem areas, which then can be evaluated with established techniques. Field trials carried out on industrial underground pipelines show the technique can locate welds in the pipeline and that 81\% of welds are located within +/- 3m of ILI (in line inspection) reference data with a POD (probability of Detection) of 75%. Unexpected defects were located, 83% being found < 2m compared to ILI data, with a mean error of +/- 1m. These features are demonstrated in surveys carried out in conjunction with National Grid. Work on the location of weld position has also demonstrated that there is a capability for this system to be used in this mode, which is of importance to pipeline operators, as they use weld positions to find pipeline sections that have defects. This then leads to the conclusions that the prototype system developed, can in principle identify and locate SCZ, the aspect to be developed is the characterisation and the determination of the severity of either a defect in the pipeline or an expected SCZ such as a weld, which is the subject of further work, beyond this PhD.

Abstract:
Strain sensors are used for structural health monitoring issues, certainly in parts with high safety requirements made of fibre-reinforced plastic composites. The integration of these sensors inside the parts protects them against any mechanical and corrosive impact. The sensor functionality can be enhanced by integration. There is a lot of international research effort to further develop integratable strain sensors. Different approaches are currently pursued. This thesis presents the results of investigations on three different approaches for novel strain sensors. The main goal of these investigations was to minimise the sensor diameter down to the diameter of reinforcing fibres. The small diameter allows for an optimum and artefact free integration of the sensors. The formation of resin nests and notches to the material structure can be prevented by integrating sensor with a smaller diameter. The strain measurement and monitoring is enhanced and more reliable then

Abstract:
Some would say today’s villas lacks interesting architecture. Little variation and frankly, uninteresting. In this thesis, investigations will be made towards figuring out if this is what the Swedish people want, or if given the possibility, they would pick something different from what is available and also, which qualities they look for in their home. This is what this thesis will look into. In order to answer this question, information needed to be obtained, information which was attained through a survey that was sent out to the Swedish people. And interviews that was sent to architects and house brokers in different parts of Sweden. The response rate was 221 answers from the people, 8 answers from the brokers and 9 answers from the architects. With these answers the result was divided into 5 groups to see if there was a difference according to the participants age. The result showed that the swedes think much alike when it comes to location of their house, but when it comes to their own home, the answers are much diverse even though some specifications are more appreciated than others.

Abstract:
During the congress on Paolo Diacono held in Cividale del Friuli in 1899 (eleven centuries after Paolo's death) a scientific committee decided to publish a new edition of Paolo’s opera omnia. A sort of scholar jealousy arised: the Istituto storico italiano thought that its own duty was to publish the Historia romana and the Historia Langobardorum, the main works written by Paolo. The eminent scholar Carlo Cipolla, on the contrary, believed that task was of the Deputazione veneta di storia patria. A compromise was signed: Amedeo Crivellucci (of the Istituto storico) invited Cipolla to collaborate on the edition of both Histories. The present essay recalls that collaboration (that unfortunately was interrupted in 1904) studying the correspondence between Cipolla, Crivellucci and other historians (Villari, Crivellucci) and reopening an unknown page of the history of Italian medievistic scholarship.

Abstract:
In the second half of the 16th century, in the garden of the Medicean villa of Pratolino the sculptor Valerio Cioli created, among other groups, the Villano con la falce, which represented a peasant in the act of sawing the reeds in a marshy lake where there was a salamander that spurted water from its mouth. The salamander is now lost while the Villano has been identified so far by critics with the statue of the so-called Mietitore attributed to Cioli and now in the Boboli garden deposits. In the 1990s, during restorations at Pratolino, a stone fragment of a male statue was found: through a careful analysis of the documentary and figurative sources as well as a close comparison with other works certainly by Cioli, this paper aims to recognize the fragment as the Villano con la falce.

Abstract:
Energy harvesting, sometimes referred to as “power scavenging” or “energy extraction”, can be defined as “converting ambient energies such as vibration, temperature, light, RF energy, etc. to usable electrical energy by using energy conversion materials or structures, and subsequent storage of the electrical energy for powering electric devices”. There has been a significant increase in the research on vibration-based energy harvesting in recent years. In this contest magnetostrictive devices are considered a promising technology. The Villari effect, also known as the inverse magnetomechanical effect, is the change in magnetization that a magnetostrictive material undergoes when subjected to an applied uniaxial stress. This effect pertains to the transduction of energy from the elastic to the magnetic state and is inverse of Joule magnetostriction. Furthermore, the Villari effect exhibits many of the attributes of the direct magnetostrictive effect since its physical origin lies in magnetoelastic coupling. Transducers utilizing the Villari effect consist of a coil wound on a core of magnetostrictive material. In this paper, a linear magnetomechanical coupling model is developed to analytically calculate the potential electrical power such transducers can generate when subjected to applied harmonic mechanical vibration. Theoretical results are confirmed by experimental tests on two different magnetostrictive devices.

Abstract:
This paper describes a proof-of-concept non-contact strain sensor, using a magnetostrictive Fe-Ga alloy (Galfenol). Magnetostrictive materials demonstrate dimensional changes in response to a magnetic field. In contrast with typical piezoceramic materials, Galfenol is the most ductile of the current transduction materials and appears to have an excellent ability to withstand mechanical shock and tension. Galfenol also exhibits the inverse (Villari) effect: both the magnetization and permeability change in response to an applied stress. Galfenol has low hysteresis loses, less than ∼10% of its transduction potential over a range of −20 to +80 °C. The magnetization’s response to stress depends strongly on both magnetic field bias and alloy composition. Galfenol’s Villari effect can be used in various sensor configurations together with either a giant magnetoresistance (GMR) sensor, Hall Effect sensor or pickup coil to sense the magnetization / permeability changes in Galfenol when stressed. The sensor described in this paper utilizes the permeability change, which is not time dependent and can measure static loads. The design reported here targets low force, low frequency applications, such as inclination measurements and stress monitoring. The sensor was able to measure both static and dynamic stress. The static sensitivity was +3.64 Oe/kN for the Hall sensor close to the bias magnet and −1.49 Oe/kN for the Hall sensor at the other end of the Galfenol strip. We conclude that a Galfenol strain sensor is a viable candidate for bolt stress monitoring in critical applications.

Abstract:
This paper describes a computational scheme for the modeling of magnetostrictive material in a fluid utilizing the immersed finite element method (IFEM). The IFEM is used for the modeling of magnetostrictive particles (MPs) in a fluid with the goal of capturing changes to viscosity. The IFEM approach entails having an Eulerian fluid mesh for an entire computational domain, a single continuum, with MPs being immersed deformable solid structures in the fluid as unique Lagrangian meshes moving on top of a fluid mesh. The interaction between these deformable structures and the surrounding fluid is accomplished by distributing forces and interpolating velocities between these two domains, fluid and solid, utilizing the Reproducing Kernel Particle Method (RKPM) delta function. MPs are modeled to enable a future physical system exploiting the Joule and Villari effects to measure the relative changes to viscosity. This sensing action is directly proportional to a fluid’s viscosity, e.g. different fluid viscosities result in different signal signatures.

Abstract:
This study presents mechanical energy dissipation with a proof-of-concept prototype magnetostrictive (Fe-Ga alloy, galfenol) based shunt circuit using passive electrical components. Magneto strictive material can harvest electricity out of the structural vibrations based on the Villari effect using permanent magnet and pickup coil configuration. The device in this study consists of a polycrystalline galfenol strip bonded to a brass cantilever beam. Two brass pieces, each containing a permanent magnet, are used to mass load at the end of the beam and to provide a magnetic bias field through the galfenol strip. The voltage induced in an induction coil closely wound around the cantilever beam captures the time rate of change of magnetic flux within the galfenol strip as the beam vibrates. To dissipate the electrical voltage output from the pickup coil and/or to change the phase of eddy current from the magnetic flux density fluctuation, a shunt circuit is attached. The effective mechanical impedance for the magnetostrictive shunt circuit is derived in a model. The effectiveness of a series L-R and L-C shunt circuit is demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. The non-linear model parameters, which include the mechanical-magnetic coupling factors, α and αT, and the permeability of galfenol, β, are extracted from experimental measurement. The shunted magnetostrictive damping model of both resistive and capacitance shunt cases compare well with the experimental results.

In 2018 12th International Pipeline Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/ipc2018-78162.

Abstract:
Buried steel pipelines are subjected to mechanical stress, by internal or external forces, resulting from geo-hazards, shear or external loading, and hoop stress. These conditions are key factors that can be detrimental to the integrity of the pipeline and lead to possible failures such as: coating damage, dents, buckles, cracks, and leaks. Identifying stress concentration regions, in difficult to pig pipelines, is challenging, especially when compared to piggable pipelines. Using the Large Standoff Magnetometry (LSM) technology, an innovative screening tool, we can identify stress concentration by performing an indirect inspection. LSM technology detects inverse magnetostriction (also known as the Villari effect) “which is the change of the magnetic susceptibility of a material when subjected to mechanical stress”. Using this technology we can detect changes in the magnetic field of the pipeline which can indicate the presence of stress on the pipe wall. LSM technology has shown significant results when correlated with additional data. For instance, LSM technology correlated with Inline Inspection (ILI) or As-Built drawings have aided in the accurate selection of digs to mitigate failures due to stress concentration. Successfully identifying digs to mitigate stress concentration is vital as it substantially reduces cost due to potential failures and avoiding unnecessary digs. This paper will show the benefits of an integrated approach and how the correlation of inline and aboveground pipeline integrity data ensures that threats due to stress concentrations are confidently identified and mitigated. Several case studies will be presented to show how recent advancements have helped to identify and prioritize regions with Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC), Cracks, Unknown Buried Feature, Dents, and Buckles.

Abstract:
In this paper we aim at presenting the digitalization process done on the archaeological site at San Gregori a villa a mare from the Early Roman Empire found in Burriana, a Mediterranean coastal village of Spain. The archaeological work is part of a joint research project carried out by Universitat Jaume I in Castellón and the Archaeological Museum of Burriana. To date, the residential part of the villa in the northeast corner of the settlement has been excavated; this area is situated about 100 meters from the waterfront. The villa has been dated around the change of Era and IV c. A. D.; however, some Roman republican and Iberian materials have also been registered. The last phase of the work consisted on the development of a 3D laser scanning to complete the graphical work for the archaeological documentation of the site.
