Trigg, Roger. Religious Freedom in a Secular Society. Edited by Phil Zuckerman and John R. Shook. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199988457.013.19.

Abstract:
In the West, the distinction between the forms of secularism in France and the United States is instructive. The attitudes and legal approaches of both have their roots in the European Enlightenment, but their treatment of religion is significantly different due to their distinctive views on human reason. The first takes reason to be intrinsically liberating. Its watchword is human freedom and autonomy, but it takes these as given, just as it assumes a fundamental equality among all people. The second understands reason, freedom, and equality within a religious context. Freedom is God-given and must be respected as such, so freedom of religion must be recognized. Beyond these two positions, aggressive secularism regards all religious claims as beyond reason or even irrational and potentially dangerous. That kind of secularism can never achieve the neutrality to which aspires and always creates second-class citizens out of some religious believers.

Abstract:
This open access book offers a systematic overview of the relations between comics and religion from the perspective of cultural sociology. How do comics function in religions? How does religion appear in comics? How does the reading of comics relate to rituals, ethics, and worldviews? And how do graphic narratives inform us about contemporary society and the changing role of religion? Contributing authors, use examples from across the globe to explore a diversity of religions, spirituality and dispersed notions of the sacred – including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Zoroastrianism, Indian and Japanese religions, Anthroposophy, Hinduism and Norse religion – but also the rituals, ethics, and worldviews that pop up in the comics milieu itself. In the burgeoning field of comics studies, research on the religious aspects from a sociological point of view is missing, a gap filled by the current contributors, making this volume as relevant to students of religion in popular culture, cultural sociologists and students of comics. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license on www.bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by The Faculty for Humanities and Education and the University Library at the University of Agder, Norway.

Abstract:
How is religion portrayed on prime time entertainment television and what effect does this have on our society? This book brings together the opinions of all the important factions involved in this important public policy debate, including religious figures (Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and Freethinkers—liberal and conservative), academics, media critics and journalists, and representatives of the entertainment industry. The debate provides contrasting views on how much and what type of religion should be on entertainment television and what relationship this has with the health of our society. Many contributors also offer strategies for how to reform the present situation. This is an important work that delineates the debate for the layperson as well as researchers, scholars, and policymakers.

Haroon, Sana. Competing Views of Pashtun Tribalism, Islam, and Society in the Indo-Afghan Borderlands. University of California Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1525/california/9780520294134.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores descriptions of Pashtun tribes and their religious predisposition in 20th century Urdu literature associated with strategic mobilization of the Pashtun regions, and highlights the inconsistency of this discourse with other twentieth-century nationalist projects in colonial India and Afghanistan. In the first instance, the 1914-36 writings of a group called the Jama‘at-i Mujahidin were at variance with the Pashtun and Muslim nationalist positions of the Khuda’i Khidmatgars and the Jamʻiyyat al-‘Ulama-yi Hind, and with the officially sanctioned geographies of the Afghan state. In the second instance, writings published in Pakistan during the period of the anti-Soviet Afghan jihad contradicted USAID- and Kabul-funded demographic and cartographic studies of the 1970s. Such descriptions of Pashtun religious predisposition, tribal valor, resistance and autonomy must be understood as intentional and disruptive interventions in knowledge production about, and political organization in, the Pashtun regions.

Abstract:
Research on religious/spiritual needs to follow all international guidelines for studies involving human subjects. However, some specific aspects related to ethical controversies are discussed here. First is the ethical duty to study religious/spiritual in psychiatry, since it impacts mental health and is a topic valued by psychiatric patients. Second is the ethics of performing interventions involving spirituality (e.g., to develop a patient’s spirituality or change negative religious coping): What is the limit? Third is bias and conflict of interest based on spiritual/anti-spiritual view of the researcher or clinician; this includes the obligation to publish findings irrespective of whether they support the views held by researchers, supporters, or society. Fourth is the need to respect patients’ religious/spiritual in designing and discussing a study. And fifth is dealing with sensationalism or distortion in media coverage of scientific findings regarding religious/spiritual.
