Abstract:
Will there be any ‘happy dispute’ again? A debate among people holding different opinions that does not end with a repetition of the initial idea, but rather with an improvement of one’s own beliefs and those of others? In order to achieve this, we need to rely on education which, through deliberative debate training activities, can foster the development of rhetorical and dialectical skills (the ability to persuade and compete) as well as critical thinking and open-mindedness (living together and cooperating). A number of scholars from around the world reflect on the topic both from a theoretical point of view – the significance of debate in a hyperconnected society – and from a practical point of view, the application of educational models and tools to measure their effectiveness.

Nachtomy, Ohad. Leibniz’s View of Living Beings. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780190490447.003.0009.

Abstract:
Leibniz’s theory of organic emboîtement is well known, but seldom analyzed in detail. The model of embodiment Leibniz deploys is not a material one, not the kind of physical emboîtement that we find exemplified in Russian dolls, which are physically encapsulated one within the other, or the view of living things as subtle machines advanced by Descartes. This paper will examine several models of embodiment: physical, logical, expressive/representative, as well as a model of functional organization. I will conclude that the latter captures most adequately the Leibnizian view of a living being as a nested individual and the kind of embodiment it involves. What makes all these nested individuals components of a single individual is that they all follow one dominant program of action which may be seen as composed of many subprograms. But they all serve a single end (telos) that informs the developmental program of an individual.

Hasker, William. Incarnation: The Avatar Model. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198806967.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter presents a model of the Incarnation developed on the basis of the Na’vi avatars of the science fiction movie Avatar. The model does not address the metaphysics of the Incarnation; rather, its main concern is with the consciousness of Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son. “One-sphere models,” in which the Son while incarnate has a single sphere of consciousness, are examined and found to be unsatisfactory. The avatar model is a “two-sphere model,” in which there exist distinct spheres of consciousness for the divine nature and the human nature, similar to the “two minds” view proposed by Thomas Morris. It is argued that this does not amount to Nestorianism. The possibility of a single person with multiple spheres of consciousness is defended by comparison with the psychological “split-brain” and “multiple personality” phenomena; this way of understanding those phenomena is defended against a contrary view expounded by Tim Bayne.

Abstract:
This article describes the conceptual framework that provides a unified description for all kinds of nanoelectronic devices covering different transport regimes from the diffusive to the ballistic limit, including molecular conductors, carbon nanotubes, and silicon transistors. More specifically, it presents a unified bottom-up viewpoint to the subject of electrical conduction of particular relevance to nanoelectronic devices and highlights the important role played by contacts. It also discusses the basic inputs that define the NEGF–Landauer model, along with its relevant equations, including those that provide a general approach to the problem of quantum transport. A few examples are given to illustrate how these equations are applied.

Prawitz, Dag. Logical Consequence From a Constructivist View. Edited by Stewart Shapiro. Oxford University Press, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780195325928.003.0022.

Full text
Abstract:
In spite of the great advancement of logic in our time and the technical sophistication of disciplines such as model theory and proof theory, the concept of logical consequence—the most basic notion of logic—is still poorly understood. Basic intuitions are often in conflict with each other, and rather few attempts have been made to sort this out in a systematic fashion. This article critically reviews some of the attempts that have been made to articulate intuitions about logical consequence, but the review makes no claim to be comprehensive or to settle the issues. Most attention is given to how the notion of logical consequence may be developed from a constructivist point of view.
