Abstract:
Hải Ninh’s The Little Girl of Hà Nội (1974) captures the traumatic war causalities caused by the US B-52 bombing campaign in December 1972 through the memories of a child witness figure. While the US media typically portrayed Vietnamese children as helpless victims, and mainstream North Vietnamese media portrayed them as heroes, the film presents its child protagonist as both a victim and care agent within her community’s care network. The essay shows that Little Girl foregrounds the caring capability of a wounded community by using care as a structural force and a central aesthetic. I argue that Little Girl produces an aesthetics of care, including visual and sonic motifs to inscribe the tender tone that underscores the images of the damaged city. In this way, the film shows that care has the potential to reframe the narrative of war while avoiding the dominant frozen trope of traumatic memories.

This study is to explore the structural relationships among experiential value of Korean food, Korean food image, behavioral intentions on Korean food, and Korean national image, for Vietnamese locals. Data were collected from 258 Vietnamese locals, combining online and field survey. The findings are as follows. First, CROI(customer return on investment), playfulness and service excellence dimensions of experiential value positively affect Korean food image. These experiential value dimensions of Korean food can improve Vietnamese locals’ Korean food image. But aesthetics dimension of experiential value does not affect Korean food image. Second, Korean food image influences on both the behavioral intentions on Korean food, and Korean national image. Results suggest that positive experiential value of Korean food does not only increase sales of Korean food in local, but also enhance the Vietnamese locals’ Korean national image. Implications and limitations are also discussed.

This study examines the tunic designed by Lemur Nguyễn Cát Tường—most often cited as the precursor to the modern áo dài—as a physical entity and as a historical and abstract symbol of modernity. My argument is twofold: first, that Lemur was the first modern Vietnamese designer, evidenced by his engagement in two modern fashion practices—the establishment of an institutionalized system and his proposal for a Vietnamese national costume. Second, I argue that despite protestations of its insignificance, dress served as a ground on which weighty social and cultural battles—such as gender, class, national identity, aesthetics, and modernity itself—were fought.

Abstract:
Introduction. Educating the young generation is the future of every nation. President Ho Chi Minh was a philosopher of Vietnam who saw the critical role of educating the young generation to build a strong country. The purpose is to find out suitable educational content and methods, thereby applying it to Vietnamese education to build Vietnamese people to develop comprehensively to meet the requirements of industrialization and modernization and international integration in Vietnam. Study participants and methods. The paper is based on Ho Chi Minh's view on educating young people to clarify educational content and methods. The paper uses materialist dialectics to analyze and explain Ho Chi Minh's thoughts on educating the young Vietnamese generation expressed in his works, articles, and speeches. In addition, the paper uses methods of comparison, analysis and synthesis to clarify the contents and methods of education in Ho Chi Minh's viewpoint. Results. Ho Chi Minh's thought on educating the young Vietnamese. That generation is not only mentioned in the narrow sense of knowledge and academic education; Education is not only limited to schools, between teachers and students, but the contents of Ho Chi Minh's educational thought is very broad and cover many fields. That is the idea of humanistic education, the point of view of educating people in general in terms of ideals, knowledge, health, aesthetics and morality in all social relations to build Vietnamese people to develop comprehensively in terms of physical strength, intelligence, ethics, and personality. These contents car out based on the correct educational method, which is a close combination of theory and practice, a combination of education in school with education in the family and society, and at the same time it arouses and promotes self-discipline in learning and training of the young generation. In general, Ho Chi Minh’s contents and methods of educating the young generation contain many positive and progressive points. That thought shows the dialectic, the mutual influence between elements of the teaching process. Practical significance. In the context of Vietnam's current integration and development, besides the positive effects of the market mechanism, its negative side has also had an increasingly profound influence on the young Vietnamese generation. A large part of the younger generation is still showing limitations in terms of education, professional occupation, physical strength, learning ability, and practical capacity; living passively, lacking the will to practice, lacking dreams and ambitions; being afraid of difficulties and hardships; lacking a sense of responsibility to family, society and to themselves. That is a matter of particular concern. To overcome this situation, it is necessary to deeply research, study and apply President Ho Chi Minh's thought on educating the young generation in order to comprehensively develop the Vietnamese people in general and the young Vietnamese generation in particular. Abstract:
Matt Huynh’s The Boat (2015), an interactive digital adaptation of Nam Le’s short story of the same name (2008), follows the story of a young Vietnamese boat migrant to explore the dilemma of belonging in migrant and refugee flight. While Le’s text details narratives of refugee flight, Huynh’s multimodal rendition translates the narrative of boat migration into an interactive, multisensory aesthetic mode that simulates the experience of boat passage on the ocean as well as the online viewer’s sense of a boat approaching national shores. In this article, I develop the concept of kinotextuality, an aesthetics of movement that renders the border generative and creative. I demonstrate that the literary imagination offers a conception of the border not merely as the limited space of the nation but as a space for reimagining the idea of human rights and protection.

Rickshaw circulation gave rise to issues of hygiene, safety, traffic control, taxation, convenience, comfort, aesthetics, accessibility, uses of public space, and morality. These increasingly contentious issues were debated within municipal councils, and also by the press and the public. Large French companies dominated rickshaw manufacturing while the downtrodden condition of rickshaw pullers sparked a debate among Vietnamese journalists and intellectuals who urged the suppression or reform of the trade.

Abstract:
Translation of Buddha’s discourses (suttas) is one of the most challenging yet less researched areas in Translation Studies. The question of ‘a faithful translated version’ gains most importance in the translation process. The main focus of this research is to foreground the Buddhist theory of interpretation and translation and to look into the Vietnamese translated version of Majjhima Nikaya (MN) of Theravada Buddhism’s Pali Sutta Collection semantically and etymologically. The study found out that, just like translated works in any other language, the Vietnamese translations of the suttas are still not satisfactory versions for readers- both monks and laypeople, as the translators determined the meanings of Buddhist texts from their own cultural and religious experience, outlook, and interpretative traditions. Han (Chinese) language influence of the Mahayana tradition suttas was also commonly found on both semantic and etymological features of the translations. Therefore, there is a crucial need to envisage and define proper methods of translation that would help translators of Buddhist religious texts to convey the real meaning of Buddha’s teaching to the learners. This is very crucial in the Asian contexts, especially in Vietnam, because Asian conceptions of language, interpretation, translation, literature, aesthetics are very different from that of the West, and even vary by country. Future translators should have a professional attitude towards the translation of such religious texts, should possess both language proficiency and wide knowledge in religious matters. Most important, they should put their heart into every of their religious translation works.

Abstract:
The fast speed of urbanization in Vietnamese big city like Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) has pushed a large number of longstanding cemeteries deep into the inner city. It consequently leads to the gradual loss of urban aesthetics and negative impacts on urban environment. Choosing location for cemetery in modernized city is currently realized as one of serious and difficult issues in terms of urban space planning. Also, it is an urgent concern of environmental problem. The result of traditional inhumation, for example, has led to an uncontrollable wide underground spread of polluted leachates exuding from human body corpses in longstanding cemetery and surrounding areas. In order to improve the effectiveness of urban planning, together with environmental and cemetery management and groundwater conservation responsibilities on site and surroundings of a cemetery, assessment of the groundwater pollution and simulation of the contaminant transport potential are compulsory. This study aims to conduct both tasks into Binh Hung Hoa (Tan Phu district) and Vinh Nghiem (district 12) cemeteries, the two typical longstanding cemeteries in HCMC.

Abstract:
This article conducts a comparative analysis of the concept of invisibility within two literary works: The Absent(Nguoi di vang, in Vietnamese) by N.B. Phuong and As I Lay Dying by W. Faulkner. It employs M. Henry’s phenomenological insights into life and aesthetics as a theoretical framework to delve into the expression and perception of invisibility in these texts. The study demonstrates that invisibility plays a dynamic role in both novels, exploring how it is articulated, revealed, perceived, and comprehended. By immersing characters in states of dying and coma, these narratives facilitate an exploration of the invisible as a perceptual experience. Both authors delve into the realm of invisibility by granting voices to the earth and its inhabitants, simultaneously emphasizing the silences and gaps in human communication. The central objective of this article is to identify common themes and perspectives related to the manifestation of life in these two writers’ works. Both N.B. Phuong and Faulkner conceive life as fundamentally invisible, with art serving as the means to unveil this invisible life.

Davydova, Olga. "Participation of USA in the War in Vietnam in Soviet Press in 1965: the Specifics of the Photo Image of the Enemy." Metamorphoses of history, no. 25 (2022): 0. http://dx.doi.org/10.37490/s230861810023092-1.

Full text
Abstract:
The article is devoted to how the image of enemy is built and how it functions within the Cold War discourse. Ideas presented within the article are based on research of the photographs published in official Soviet press, namely in “Izvestia” and “Pravda” newspapers, illustrating the articles about War in Vietnam. The period under consideration is 1965, when USA increased its military presence in the region mentioned above. The aim of the article is to figure out and describe the key elements of the image of enemy in the context of mass media. The article also suggests a conceptual and methodological frame of how the photographs represented can be read and interpreted. Thus, Walter Benjamin’s conception of the emptiness and meaninglessness of a photograph without a caption allows to show that a photographic image does possess a great potential for inserting an additional sense. Also, Benjamin’s notions of aesthetization of politics and politization of aesthetics are taken into account when dealing with aesthetics of the photographs used in press. As to the contents of the images, one can highlight a number of topics repeated through the visual elements. We face numerous images of protests against the war all over the world; we see the terrors of war (children and women); we see the aggressor itself represented through military equipment and soldiers; finally, we meet brave Vietnamese people resisting the Americans. The detailed analysis of the images representing the aggressor (soldiers and war equipment) allows to reveal key strategies of how the image of enemy is built within the Cold War discourse. It is shown that the enemy is cruel but one does not need to be afraid of him: the enemy is defeated and will be defeated. The enemy’s strength is visible only in comparison with a weaker opponent. The enemy is deceitful and hypocritical, he cannot be trusted. At the same time, America has also another face – the face of people who are against the war and who also suffer from cruelty and injustice.

Abstract:
Abstract Lists, and the practice of listing, provide avenues of insight into Bình, the protagonist in Monique Truong’s The Book of Salt (2003). Working as a cook in the infamous Stein Salon in Old World Paris, Bình, a narrative footnote extracted from The Alice B. Cook Book (1954), exercises a linguistic and culinary grasp shown to rival the resident darling couple’s own modernist projects. Demonstrating the narrator’s artistry under the radar, the list represents a formal feature that stages the particularities of queer aesthetics against the humanist backdrop represented by Gertrude Stein and Alice Toklas. As the novel spans geographical coordinates and varied temporalities, Bình’s curious expression of choice prompts narratological overlooking even as it tracks the desires of diasporic bodies and the taste of cherished dishes. Exercised with remarkable restraint, the generative accretions of running catalogs and errant recipes represent small acts of creativity in the novel. Simultaneously, the practice of listing foregrounds the enumerations as tactical sites of interruption and deferral, to constitute a critical methodology that reflects the list-maker’s precarity as a queer Vietnamese exile. This essay attends to the achievements of a minoritarian character who casts a shadow in the familiar archives of high modernism, as the “superficial” stylistic feature of the list opens up The Book of Salt to larger reflections on the intimate ties between coloniality and avant-garde experimentation.

Abstract:
FROM THE TIME OF SOCRATES' Phaedo to the present, misanthropy has been thought of as spoilt idealism: the flipside of generosity for Timon of Athens, of sincerity for Molièère's Alceste, of reason for Jonathan Swift's Gulliver, and so on. Misanthropy thus construed places one in a critical position between ''humanity and humans'' (Schiller). In contrast, Chris Burden's work leads us to see the misanthropy fundamental to and constitutive of the very conception of art. For instance, through its erasure of the line commonly drawn between symbolic and real violence and through the uncertainties, equivocations, contradictions, and overdeterminations it evoked, the performance he titled 747 represented art's undoing of humanity, its drive to betray what Samuel Beckett called ''anthropomorphic insolence,'' or whatever may be thought of as properly human desires, intentions, and concerns. Similarly, through The Other Vietnam Memorial (1991) Burden drew out the fierce misanthropy in Maya Lin's beloved wall by reminding us of the names of the millions of Vietnamese that it symbolically and, in effect, violently erases. More recently, and perhaps even more controversially, the artist Dread Scott has followed Burden's example in a work titled (and dramatizing the equivoque in the term) Enduring Freedom (2002), a shrine based on those created in New York City in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks but devoted to the Afghan casualties of the war the United States is conducting in response to them. Using Beckett as one of his favored exemplars, Theodor Adorno directed attention to the aesthetic implications of misanthropy (even as he struggled to give them a utopian spin) when he remarked upon the Baudelarian ''spleen'' of art, without which it cannot be and with which it maintains ''a permanent protest against morality.'' Even though we continue to play it down whenever we try to discipline art into spiritual health by working some sense of responsibility into our theories of what it is, does, and has been, this disorienting protest is arguably the most ancient theme of Western aesthetics. Despite its so-called terrorist aspects, then, Burden's art is thoroughly traditional in emphasizing art's misanthropic appeal. A comparison on this score to literary works by writers such as Franz Kafka and Thomas De Quincey, to historical episodes such as the practice of ascetism among the fourthcentury ''desert fathers,'' to artworks by Caspar David Friedrich and Pieter Bruegel the Elder, to the films of Ingmar Bergman, and to the controversies over aesthetics that arose in the immediate aftermath of the events of 9/11 shows us why politics will be aestheticized, whether we like it or not. In other words, this analysis shows us why we cannot even begin to conceive of human justice without working through art and thus through the subject of misanthropy.

This article examines David Damrosch’s notion of “scriptworlds”—spheres of cultural and intellectual transfusion, defined by a shared script—as it pertains to early modern Vietnam’s abandonment of sinographic writing in favor of a latinized alphabet. The Vietnamese case demonstrates a surprisingly rapid readjustment of deeply held attitudes concerning the nature of writing, in the wake of the alphabet’s meteoric successes. The fluidity of “language ethics” in early modern Vietnam (a society that had long since developed vernacular writing out of an earlier experience of diglossic literacy) suggests that the durability of a “scriptworld” depends on the nature and history of literacy in the societies under question.

It explores the corporeal and aural qualities that are central to an understanding and sensorial experience of the artist's installations and visual practice. In paying attention to breath, sound and motion in visual art production, Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba's works reveal how corporeality and sonicity can dismantle the ocular-centrism of visual art. The discussions between Jun and Prarthana map the varied traumatic histories of racial colonialism, war and forced migration that haunt Vietnam's present, and bring to the surface the artist's aesthetic and political concerns around art, performance and cultural memory.

Abstract:
This study explores the impact of religious architecture on the aesthetic perceptions of elementary school students in Hanoi, Vietnam, focusing on students majoring in fine arts. Employing regression analysis, the research assesses the influence of six key dimensions: architectural design and details, cultural and historical context, spiritual symbolism, emotional impact, context and setting, and students' perceptions of beauty and art. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire developed from a thorough literature review and expert consultations and administered to a randomly selected sample during Vietnam's Lunar New Year in January 2024. The results revealed that each dimension significantly contributes to students' perceptions of beauty, with context and setting having the most pronounced effect. The reliability of the questionnaire was confirmed via Cronbach's alpha, indicating high internal consistency across all scales. The regression analysis validated the theoretical framework, establishing that religious buildings' architectural and contextual elements significantly shape students' aesthetic judgments. These findings underscore the importance of integrating architectural aesthetics into educational curricula, highlighting how environmental and cultural contexts influence educational outcomes in art and aesthetics. This research contributes to filling a significant gap in understanding the academic impact of cultural heritage, offering significant implications for educational practices and policies in culturally diverse settings.

Every individual globally possesses a distinct surname and given name. The space Chinese, Vietnamese, and English systems of surnames intricately intertwine with their corresponding national histories, religious beliefs, traditional cultures, and social customs. These systems distinctly reflect the images and evolution of their social histories, the origins and progression of ancient civilizations, the amalgamation and enrichment of Chinese, Vietnamese, and English societies, as well as the transformations and reforms in social norms. Furthermore, they provide valuable insights for delving into the histories and cultures of these nations. Chinese, Vietnamese, and English surnames have undergone evolution within two disparate social environments, enduring extensive periods of historical refinement and accrual. They manifest various cultural idiosyncrasies, emanating distinctive historical allure, spotlighting individual national traits, and revealing diverse valuable orientations and aesthetic standards. This thesis delves into the concepts and connotations of Chinese, Vietnamese, and English surnames. On one hand, it scrutinizes and dissects differences in their formation times, historical origins, developmental trajectories, cultural characteristics, national amalgamation, and cultural connotations. On the other hand, it aims to identify primary factors arising from social reforms, religious beliefs, national psychologies, valuable conceptions, and political and economic elements. The study explores the semantic significance of surnames, uncovering variations in Chinese, Vietnamese, and English histories and cultures while nurturing cross-cultural awareness. The examination of historical and cultural differences in Chinese, Vietnamese, and English surnames proves valuable in acknowledging both shared traits and unique distinctions in cultural customs, facilitating a more profound understanding of societal development. Abstract:
Abstract Critics have long pointed out that there was nothing “cold” about the Cold War—its wars extended as hot proxy wars impacting spaces outside of the Eastern and Western Blocs. Treating the Cold War as a metaphor, this article analyzes how interdisciplinary artist Hương Ngô mobilizes “sonic performances of infidelities,” a term I use to draw attention to how diasporic bodies reject the polarizing discourses of the Cold War in spatial, temporal, and epistemological terms. By noting how Ngô employs the visual, sonic, and performative, this article identifies how Ngô’s sonic performances of infidelity ultimately construct an alternative to the Cold War that pulls from her feminist refugee aesthetic repertoire; enunciates from the specificity of Vietnamese diasporic life; and is, moreover, in spirited dialogue with the long historical and internationalist ethos of nonalignment.
