Abstract:
Every time the Journey-to-the-East Movement (known as the Đông Du Movement in Vietnamese) is mentioned, people quickly think of Phan Bi Châu and his comrades from Northern Vietnam/Tonkin and a part of Middle Vietnam/Annam called Thanh Ngh . Actually, the movement attracted many more patriotic scholars from Southern Vietnam/Cochinchina than those from Northern/Tonkin and Middle Vietnam/Annam. Many of them had suffered prison and exile or even died in prison or in remote countries. Scholars such as Trn Chánh Chiu, Nguyn Thn Hin, Trương Duy Ton, and Nguyn Háo Vĩnh were not only famous writers in the Southern Vietnamese/Cochinchinese literary and press world but also leading patriotic scholars in the Journey-to-the-East Movement. This paper will try to find out, amongst the patriotic scholars coming to Japan in the Journey-to-the-East Movement, who were from Southern Vietnam/Cochinchina, and what they did before, during, and after their visit to Japan. This finding will help to clarify a historical issue that has not been mentioned yet.

Abstract:
In this paper, we looked at “Tran Ich Tac(陳益稷)”, who surrendered to Yuan during the war with Yuan(元) during the Tran(Trần, 陳) Dynasty in Vietnam in the 13th and 14th centuries, as “King of Annam(安南國王)”. At that time, the Southern Song(南宋) conquest was carried out by Yuan and the conquest of Vietnam began, and discussions were being held on the side of the Tran Dynasty. Yuan made a strong demand for “Six Duties(六事)” against Vietnam at the time, of which it was strongly demanding “audience of the emperor(親朝)”. However, when the Tran Dynasty refused to do so, Khubilai appointed Tran Di Ai(陳遺愛), who had been dispatched as a Vietnamese envoy, to “King of Annam”. And this Yuan's move later affected Tran Ich Tac(陳益稷), and surrendered during the war between the two countries and was censured as “King of Annam”. Some argue that the reason for the surrender of Tran Ich Tac is to understand Yuan's internal situation. He also said that the reason for the surrender to Khubilai at the time was to protect the territory of the Tran Dynasty and the position of Jong-myo Shrine, but this was only a justification to unify the surrender of Tran Ich Tac and to satisfy the ambition he had brought before. However, it is noteworthy that the punishment for Tran Ich Tac was different from others in the process of punishing the surrender after the war and rationalized his surrender with the birth story, showing his influence within the Tran Dynasty, so inside Vietnam, Tran Ich Tac would not publicly inform him of the fact that he was accused of “king of Annam.”

Abstract:
The modern history of Vietnam indicates that the country has always had more than one legal system, whether the country was unified or divided. These systems have changed and been influenced by indigenous customs, by Chinese, French, American, and socialist laws, and by other political or violent events. For example, starting from the period when Vietnam was under French domination, the country had three separate sets of laws for its three geographical regions: 1) Tonkin in the North; 2) Annam in the Center; and 3) Cochin China in the South.

Abstract:
This article explores the place of the first Vietnamese Catholic bishops in the politics and society of late colonial Vietnam. It places the rise of these influential figures in the broader contexts of the decline of missionary Catholicism, the Vatican's push to form national Churches in Asia, and institutional and cultural changes in Vietnamese Catholicism during the interwar years. By doing so, the article explores the links between faith and politics in colonial Vietnam, showing how changes in Vietnamese Catholicism reflect a growing contestation of colonial rule and greater ties to global Catholicism that help explain the Church's place in Vietnamese society after independence.

Abstract:
A new species of semiterrestrial freshwater crab, Tiwaripotamon nganima n. sp. is described from northern Vietnam. The gonopods of the new species most closely resemble T. annamense (Balss, 1914) originally collected from Phuc-Son in Annam, central Vietnam, but can easily be distinguished as it has the median lobe on the posterior margin of the epistome being more projecting, the male pleon is proportionately more quadrate and less wide, the basal part of the male first gonopod has the median part of the subterminal segment more strongly curved, and the outer surface of the basal part of the terminal segment of the male first gonopod is prominently swollen. The taxonomy of two species described from southern China, T. pingguoense Dai & Naiyanetr, 1994, and T. xiurenense Dai & Naiyanetr, 1994, is also clarified after re-examination of type specimens and photographs of the original material; both species are redescribed and refigured.

Abstract:
Megophrys Kuhl and Van Hasselt are an Asian radiation of terrestrial frogs which are usually associated with montane forest (Mahony et al. 2017). The Annam horned frog (Megophrys intermedia) is reported from montane evergreen forest in Vietnam and Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Stuart 2005; Hendrix et al. 2008; Nguyen et al. 2009; Tran 2013; Orlov et al. 2015; IUCN 2017; Mahony et al. 2017). The IUCN Red List assessment for the species reports an elevational range of 782–1500 m asl (IUCN 2017) although the type locality was reported to be above 1500 m asl (Smith 1921), and Tran (2013) collected a specimen at 1515 m asl. Megophrys intermedia is assessed as Least Concern (IUCN 2017) and little is known about the reproductive behaviour and life history of the species. In Lam Dong Province (Vietnam), male M. intermedia call in March (Tran 2013); on the Langbian Plateau (Vietnam), male specimens are reported to call by day and by night from March to May and specimens called from within deep crevices between boulders in streams (Smith 1921); in Xe Kong Province (Laos), males call or guard egg clutches that are laid in water in July (Stuart 2005).

Abstract:
Laos constituted one of the five territorial entities making up French Indochina—comprising in addition the colony of Cochinchina and the protectorates of Annam, Tonkin and Cambodia. It was never, however, one among equals. Even before the annexation of Lao territories east of the Mekong river in 1893, Laos was perceived as little more than an extension of Vietnam west towards Siam (Thailand), a much more significant potential prize. The addition of minor extensions west of the Mekong demarcated by treaty in 1904 and 1907 still gave France no more than half the former Lao Kingdom of Lan Xang. Any possibility of reconstituting a greater Lao state was thereafter lost.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper reveals synoptic-scale atmospheric conditions over the South China Sea (SCS) that cause heavy rainfall in central Vietnam through case study and composite analyses. The heavy rainfall event discussed in this study occurred on 2–3 November 1999. Precipitation in Hue city (central Vietnam) was more than 1800 mm for these 2 days. Two atmospheric disturbances played key roles in this heavy rainfall. First, a cold surge (CS) northerly wind anomaly in the lower troposphere, originating in northern China near 40°N, propagated southward to reach the northern SCS and then lingered there for a couple of days, resulting in stronger-than-usual northeasterly winds continuously blowing into the Indochina Peninsula against the Annam Range. Second, a southerly wind anomaly over the central SCS, associated with a tropical depression–type disturbance (TDD) in southern Vietnam, seemed to prevent the CS from propagating farther southward. Over the northern SCS, the southerly wind anomaly formed a strong low-level convergence in conjunction with the CS northeasterly wind anomaly, and supplied warm and humid tropical air. These conditions induced by the CS and TDD are favorable for the occurrence of the heavy orographic rainfall in central Vietnam. The TDD can be regarded as a result of a Rossby wave response to a large-scale convective anomaly over the Maritime Continent associated with equatorial intraseasonal variability. Using a 24-yr (1979–2002) reanalysis and surface precipitation datasets, the authors confirm that the coexistence of the CS and TDD is important for the occurrence of heavy precipitation in central Vietnam. In addition, it is observed that CSs without a TDD do not lead to much precipitation.

Dao, Le Thanh. "An empirical analysis of the manufacturing sector in Vietnam during the period 2000-2006 with a particular emphasis on technical efficiency, trade reforms and workplace injuries." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2013. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/46798/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates empirically the manufacturing sector in Vietnam during the period 2000-2006. The main objective is to provide a comprehensive analysis on the technical performance, and workplace safety of this sector. The analysis uses the sub-dataset for the manufacturing sector extracted from the annual Vietnam Enterprise Surveys for the period under consideration. Chapter one provides an overview of the economic renovation (commonly called Doi moi). The chapter reviews milestones in the Doi moi process and its consequences in terms of economic structural changes, trade, and investment. Chapter two describes the dataset used in the thesis and the construction of the key variables adopted in the subsequent chapters. Chapter three estimates technical efficiency in the Vietnam's manufacturing sector. The chapter explores if, among other things, the estimates of technical efficiency obtained using the stochastic frontier approach are sensitive to the different distributional and econometric assumptions. Based on several test results, the chapter concludes that average manufacturing sector operated at 62 percent of its technical efficiency. Chapter four investigates empirically the determinants of technical efficiency in the Vietnam's manufacturing sector using both mean and quantile regression approaches. Results suggested that types of ownership, feminization, and compliance of firms to labour market regulation are among important determinants of technical efficiency. Notably, there is a positive, albeit modest impact of trade liberalization on technical performance of the manufacturing sector and this impact is most pronounced for the least technically efficient firms. Chapter five focuses attention on workplace injuries in the manufacturing sector. As data on workplace injuries in Vietnam is very limited, a number of experiments was tried to find the most relevant estimation strategy. The chapter finally adopts a probit model and a simple OLS to inform determinants of workplace injuries. Results suggest that types of ownership and firm size are important factors that exert influences on workplace injuries reported. Interestingly, the foreign-invested sector was found to be the worst performer compared to the domestic counterparts in terms of technical efficiency and workplace safety. Drawing from these chapters, some policy conclusions, limitations of the current exercise, and outlines of possible agenda for future research in this area are discussed in the conclusion section.

Grintchenko, Michel. "L'opération Atlante, conquête et pacification d'une province Viêt-minh en Annam pendant Dien Bien Phu : analyse et enseignements (13 mars - 15 juin 1954)." Paris, EPHE, 2003. http://www.theses.fr/2003EHESA001.

Full text
Abstract:
Integral part of the French Plan Navarre, the operation Atlante was conducted by the French and Vietnamese forces during the first half of 1954, against the Lien Khu V (a Vietminh stronghold established in Annam since the end of the WW II). France expected to take the initiative in the south of the 16th parallel in supporting the first massive involvement of the new Vietnamese Armed Forces. France wanted to prove the credibility of a Vietnamese Government acting in the framework of the French Union. Aréthuse, the first phase of the operation, achieved the conquest and the pacification of the Phu Yen, the first Vietminh province. The second phase, Axelle, took place during the battle of Dien Bien Phu and the beginning of the negotiations in Geneva, forcing the troops to carry out fierce fighting in order to block a robust Viêt-minh offensive towards the south of the Mountain Plateaux. The situation continued to get worse during June and July, after the end of Atlante, in the strict sense. This thesis emphasizes on lessons learned from these operations of pacification : civilians and the military have to cooperate closely in accordance to co-ordinated plans ; you cannot improvise forces just like that, and it is hazardous to build plans based upon fragile, poorly supervised and under-trained units. Pacification is a course of action belonging to wartime. To achieve their goals, units have to act with a very favourable balance of power (from 15 to 20 vs. 1)

Abstract:

Abstract:
Aim:The aim of the thesis was to study the effect of a self-care education in oral health for a group of dental nurse students in Danang, Vietnam. Methods: A quantitative intervention study was performed consisting of 53 selected participants, who were clinically examined to measure the dental biofilm and gingival inflammation. The intervention was a self-care education session where both information and instruction about the materials and methods of self-care in toothbrush technique and interdental cleaning were included. Results: The self-care education in oral health proved to have an effect on the students' oral hygiene. There was a statistically significant difference between the first and the second examination of the gingival inflammation. No statistically significant difference was found between the first and second examination of dental plaque but plaque score of buccal, lingual and distal surfaces significantly decreased before the second examination. The results did not show any significant difference between the group from the rural area and the group from the urban area. Conclusion:The result of the study shows that the self-care education in oral health had a positive impact on the participant´s oral hygiene. It would be beneficial to develop a self-care educational program for the population in Vietnam to improve the oral hygiene.Through knowledge and information about good self-care habits and its positive effects, more people can achieve a better and healthier oral health as a result.

Abstract:
The democratic space for civil society has become a topic of significant international debate. Particular concern has been raised toward a worsened situation for human rights defenders and civil society organisations. This thesis aims to gain further understanding of the phenomenon democratic space by examining the situation for human rights defenders and civil society organisations in Viet Nam. This qualitative case study examines the freedom of speech, freedom of expression and opinion, and the freedom of peaceful assembly and association for human rights defenders and civil society organisations through the method of semi-structured interviews. To gain deeper understanding of the current situation in Viet Nam, this study puts forward the question of whether the democratic space can be said to be expanding or shrinking in this contextand if this has an effect on human rights implementation. The collected material revealed an opinion amongst interview respondents that human rights and economic growth have developed at different paces in Viet Nam. The democratic space for civil society has in large expanded during the past twenty years, but is of late revealing restrictions for human rights defenders and civil society organisations working to protect and promote human rights. Respondents expressed optimism toward the widening of democratic space in the long-term, but remained uncertain of the development of human rights implementation in the near future.

Abstract:
The helicopter is regularly used for performing evacuation of sick and wounded. Its ability to take off and land almost anywhere makes it especially useful for these kinds of missions. Even though the ability to do this has been around for nearly 50 years, theories concerning MEDEVAC are lacking. This essay will examine the helicopters role as a MEDEVAC resource during the Vietnam war and the war in Afghanistan. The respective doctrines and Field Manuals that guide the usage of MEDEVAC helicopters will also be examined. The lack of theories in this field will be central in this essay, since the goal is to point out if any shortcomings in the evolution of the MEDEVAC helicopter could be a result of this.

Outbreaks of novel influenza viruses are continually occurring on many places on our planet, with the ultimate and most extreme consequence being a full-scale pandemic. Modern communication technology is widely used for risk communication regarding recommended change in behavior patterns and other precautions in order to mitigate the transmission. However, the assumption and bias that modern communication technology constitutes the norm causes vulnerable groups to be at possible risk of systematic exclusion to correct and updated information. Through conducting a literature- and case analysis, the aim of this study is to identify insufficient or inadequate risk communication efforts in South Korea and Vietnam during influenza outbreaks, especially with concern of vulnerable groups. Further, to analyze how national influenza preparedness plans observe or ignore these insufficiencies. Results show that vulnerable groups are explicitly recognized in the preparedness plan of Vietnam. However, the South Korean preparedness plan show a more homogenous approach. Both South Korea and Vietnam showed a broad variety of channels used in their risk communication strategies which could be positive in terms of a broad outreach to a heterogenous population, including vulnerable groups. Four key factors that moderate the outcomes of risk communication were identified: Channels, Messages, Transparency and Trust.

Abstract:
The Epilogue glosses political and artistic repercussions for Anna Sokolow during the mid-to-late Cold War era. Negotiating the twilight of the Old Left and the rise of the New Left after the 1962 founding of Students for a Democratic Society, Sokolow was caught between aesthetic changes from revolutionary modernism to Vietnam War–era postmodern impetuses. This was manifested most clearly in the upset surrounding Sokolow’s choreography for the musical Hair (1967). The Epilogue argues that Sokolow’s social–choreographic values continue to be passed down through new generations of dancers as they learn her repertory in times and places removed from the dances’ premieres, and in doing so the dances kinesthetically inform their dancers of their historical contexts within a new era. Finally, the Epilogue poses questions mediating the politics of dances’ residue.

Abstract:
Abstract In September 1952 the slackening rains of the Southwest Monsoon signaled the beginning of another campaign season in Indochina. To wage the battles of the “winter-spring” campaign of 1952-1953, the Vietminh had about 110,000 to 125,000 men in their Main Force units. Giap had formed them into six infantry divisions (the 325th Division was formed in Annam in late 1951), four independent infantry regiments, and some five or six independent infantry battalions. By 1952 the Chinese had supplied all of these units with ample numbers of machine guns and mortars. To support this infantry force, Giap formed a seventh division, the 351st Heavy Division, composed of two artillery regiments, an engineer regiment, and some light antiaircraft units.

Abstract:
Abstract Michael Herr’s Dispatches begins with a meditation on a map of Vietnam that hung on the wall of Herr’s Saigon apartment. It had been left there years before by another tenant, probably a Frenchman, since the map had been made in Paris. The paper had buckled in its frame after years in the wet Saigon heat, laying a kind of veil over the countries it depicted. Vietnam was divided into its older territories of Tonkin, Annam, and Cochin China, and to the west, past Laos and Cambodge sat Siam, a kingdom. That’s old, I’d tell visitors, that’s a really old map.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the conversion of seventeenth-century Vietnamese women to Catholicism and the narration of their conversions in the accounts of European missionaries. In Annam (as early-modern Europeans called the two polities Tonkin and Cochinchina), missionaries from the Jesuit order and from the French Missions Étrangères de Paris converted tens of thousands of women and men during the seventeenth century and composed narratives of their most notable converts. In the accounts women stand out for two reasons: a number were from high ranking court families, including members of the royal families, and a number of the lower-ranking women converts suffered from demonic possession. The most spectacular conversion cases concerned women spirit-mediums, who played an important role in Annamese religious observances as oracles. The missionaries described them as possessed by demons. Once converted, these former spirit-mediums became miracle workers, and thus fit into another category recognizable to European readers. But the Catholic Reformation had ambivalent feelings at best about such women playing an important role in the evangelization campaign. Thus missionaries seeking credibility and narrating conversions by working with what Annamese culture offered them stretched the limits of what was acceptable to their audience at home.

Abstract:
Abstract The Sung dynasty in China began in 960, succeeding theT’ang dynasty. For a time, the Sung controlled territory stretching from the southern reaches of modern Manchuria to the northern borders of Vietnam, with their power extending westward 1,000 miles from the China Sea. In 1127, they lost their northern lands to the Jurchen Mongols and concentrated their authority in the richer southern China by building a new capital city at Hangchow, at the mouth of the Yangtze River. The Southern Sung dynasty came to be regarded as something of a golden age in China, with expanding trade routes bringing in immense wealth as well as from Annam a new type of rice, which led to improvements in agriculture. Culturally, they reintroduced an interest in Confucianism, which had gradually been losing popularity to Buddhism and Taoism; that in turn led to a new form of bureaucracy, with examinations on Confucian principles becoming the basis of gaining a position in the civil service, a practice that was maintained almost until the twentieth century.

Abstract:
The Community Health Club (CHC) Model in Makoni District, Zimbabwe operated 265 CHCs with 11,600 members from 1999 to 2001 at a cost of US$0.63 per beneficiary per annum. A decade later, 48 CHCs were started in three districts in Vietnam with 2,929 members at a cost of US$1.30. Hygiene behaviour change was compared using a similar survey of observable proxy indicators in both projects, before and after intervention. In Vietnam there was a mean of 36% change in 16 observable proxy indicators (p > 0.001) which compared positively with Makoni where there was a mean of 23% hygiene change in 10 indicators (p > 0.001). In Vietnam, 8 Health Centers reported a reduction of 117 cases of diarrhoeal diseases in CHC communes, compared to only 24 in non-CHC communes in one year; in 8 Health Centers in Makoni, Zimbabwe, a reduction of 1,219 reported cases over a 2–9 year period was reported, demonstrating the efficacy of CHC both in African and Asian context. We suggest that regular government data of reported cases at clinics may be a more reliable method than self-reported diarrhoea by carers in clustered-Randomised Control Trials, which have surprised practitioners by finding negligible impact of WASH interventions on diarrhoea in rural communities.
