Abstract:
Abstract Patient safety including falls risk, is a high priority and an increasing challenge for all health care facilities. Safety risk factors include both physical factors and psychological factors. One common strategy to increase safety has been the use of “sitters.”. Studies on functions and outcomes are conflicting some have reported no differences in falls, decreases in falls and restraints, and increases in falls. A total survey sample of 22 “sitters” and 56 registered nurses conducted at a large midwestern VA facility to assess perceptions of sitters. Groups were similar in ages (41-50 years) with sitters having slightly more experience (11-20 years) versus nurses (6-10 years). Safety conditions most likely to be identified with sitter usage were delirium, elopement, and being a hospice patient. Sitters were more likely to identify falls risk, sitters 63% of time versus RN perception 30.9% (Chi Square=7.0, df=l, p=.008); dementia 59% vs 13% (Chi square=17.15, df=1, p=.001); and weakness 66.7% vs 18.2% (Chi square=16.54, df=1, p=.001). Sitters were more likely to have training in delirium 55% vs nurses, 34% (Chi sq=2.557, df=1 p=.11). Nurses identified that the use of sitters were very likely to prevent falls 29.8%, calm patients 25.2%, maintain lines 25.2%, prevent elopement 30.5% and redirect patients 29.7%. Nurses identified the following available safety strategies: alarms (67.2%), adjusting assignment (47.2%), music therapy (5.4%), use of restraints (<2%), pet therapy (<2%), and video monitoring (<1%). Implementation of safety programs must address availability of multiple strategies including: matching sitter competencies with patient populations served.

Abstract:
Presents the state-of-the-art Deepfake face replacement image collage method, an artificial intelligence (AI) product that can be used to create high-quality, realistic videos with a fake or replaced face, with no obvious signs of manipulation. Based on the DeepFaceLab (DFL) application, the process of creating video images of an “impossible face” is described step by step. The results of the experiments of studying the perception patterns of the moving “impossible face” and their differences in statics and dynamics are presented. The stimuli were two DFL-generated models of virtual sitters with impossible faces: a video image of a chimerical face, in which the right and left sides belong to different people, and a Tatchered face with the eyes and mouth areas rotated by 180°. It was shown that the phenomena of perception of the “impossible face”, registered earlier under static conditions (integrity of perception of the split image, distraction and inversion effect), are preserved and acquire a new content when dynamic models are exposed. In contrast to the collaged images, the original faces in statics and motion, regardless of egocentric orientation, are evaluated positively at the level of high values. Under all tested conditions the gender of the virtual sitter is determined adequately, the perceived age is overestimated. Estimates of the virtual sitter’s emotions from his video images are differentiated into basic (stable) and additional (changing) states, the ratio of which depends on the content of a particular episode. Deepfake image synthesis technology significantly expands the possibilities of psychological research of interpersonal perception. The use of digital technologies simplifies the creation of “impossible face” stimulus models necessary for in-depth study of representations of the human inner world, and creates a need for new experimental-psychological procedures corresponding to a higher level of ecological and social validity.

Abstract:
The objective of the research was to test the hypothesis about the relationship between the features of communicative situations and the perception of a stranger. Three types of situations were used, differing in the degree of the observer's involvement in communication: 1. looking at a photo image of the sitter, 2. watching a video with the sitter in communication, 3. communicating with the sitter “face to face”. It has been shown that the dynamics of interpersonal evaluations are multidirectional and depend rather on the diagnostic metrics used. Thus, the values of adequacy of evaluation of individual psychological features of the sitter are higher in the situation of photo perception as compared to the situations of video perception and face-to-face communication, at the same time the values of complexity of interpersonal evaluation (number of choices of neutral evaluation “0”) are lower in the situation of face-to-face communication and the situation of video perception as compared to the situation of photo perception. The study revealed the dynamics of interpersonal evaluations in different communicative situations, i.e. it was shown how situations influence the way the perception of a communication partner is formed.

Abstract:
The work is aimed at studying the dynamics of interpersonal perception in various situations of representation of the sitter and at different stages of the development of the situation. The study involved 126 people (74% women and 26% men) aged 18 to 60 years (M = 31.78; SD = 9.78). The subjects were randomly divided into four independent groups. Each group was shown videos, where the sitter was shown in three situations, differing in the degree of formalization of communication (passing through the entrance of the institution, passing the exam, consulting a psychologist), while the first group saw only the beginning of the situation, the second — the middle, the third — the end, and the fourth the group watched each of the videos in their entirety. It is shown that, in general, the assessments of one and the same person, in different situations of interaction, are determined not only by the appearance and behavior of the sitter, but also by the situation itself. Also, for some personal qualities, differences were found in the assessment depending on the stage of development of the communicative situation.

Abstract:
<p>The relevance of the study is due to the need to study the patterns of interpersonal perception using qualitative-quantitative methodology and in environmentally valid situations of human life. Three videos of interpersonal interaction were used as stimulus material. The study involved 22 people, randomly divided into two groups, one of which was presented with three stimulus videos with the participation of a sitter, and the other with the participation of a sitter. The task of the study participants was to evaluate the personal characteristics of the sitter on 21 scales of the &ldquo;Personality Differential&rdquo; method, as well as on the scale &ldquo;does not inspire confidence&rdquo;, and then provide written explanations of the ratings made on each of the scales. An inductive content analysis of verbalizations containing explanations of subjective assessments was carried out, and an empirical classification of categories of verbal units characterizing various aspects of the object of perception was constructed. As a result of the study, it was shown that perceptual situations related to different spheres of life significantly influenced the subjective assessment by observers of some personal characteristics of the person included in these situations (object of perception), as well as the ratio of categories of verbal explanations of subjective assessments. The results of the study contribute to the understanding of the processes of social perception and, in particular, the processes of perception and description by an observer of the personal characteristics of another person in different life situations of interpersonal interaction.</p>

Abstract:

Abstract:
<p>The features of expression and perception of vivid facial expressions in the system of multimodal affective states of a person are studied. The study is based on the Russian-language version of the Geneva Emotion Recognition Test (GERT) and consists of two series. The first serie of experiment was devoted to demonstration of short audio&mdash;video clips of 14 affective states expressed by specially trained actors, the second &mdash;to the same videos without sound accompaniment (intonation of voice in pseudolinguistic utterances). The subjects &mdash; 72 women in each series of the experiment, age: 18-45 years (M1=22.4 g, SD1=5.4; M2=27.47 l, SD2=5.7) - identified the states of the actors&mdash;sitters (five women and five men), using an interactive image of the Geneva Wheel of Emotions on the display screen for evaluation. The analysis of the characteristics of the accuracy and semantic structure of the expression and identification of emotional expressions, depending on the type of modality and exposure conditions, is carried out. The main expression and identification metrics of facial, prosodic and multimodal states are correlated. According to experimental data, within the framework of bimodal (face+voice) expressions of emotions, a mobile face has a higher expressive potential and is the basis of cross-modal integration.</p>

Abstract:
Since the discovery that the expansion of our universe is most likely driven by vacuum energy, finding four-dimensional de Sitter vacua in String Theory has been one of the main goals of String Phenomenology. However, despite two decades of efforts, constructing metastable de Sitter vacua continues to be a great challenge, and the twenty-year-old construction of Kachru, Kallosh, Linde and Trivedi (KKLT), although not uncontested, remains one of the prototypical examples. The KKLT scenario is a two-step construction, where initially four-dimensional effective field theory is used to obtain a supersymmetric AdS4 vacuum, and then anti-D3 branes are added to break supersymmetry and uplift the vacuum energy to a positive value. In the first part of this thesis, we study in detail some aspects of both steps of this proposal. On the one hand, we provide a ten-dimensional description of the intermediate AdS4 vacua using the language of Generalized Complex Geometry. On the other hand, we study the backreaction of the anti-D3 branes and find that they also source three-form fluxes. We tabulate all components of this flux, calculate their effect on the D7-branes wrapping four-cycles in the bulk of the compactification manifold, and devise a more minimalist KKLT-like scenario. In the second part of the thesis, we work on the nature of the microstructure of black holes, which is another important issue that String Theory should be able to address. In General Relativity, black holes are uniquely characterized by very few asymptotic parameters. However, black holes also have a huge entropy S, which should be explained by a microscopic description. We look at this numerical discrepancy through the lens of the fuzzball proposal, which claims that there are e^S horizonless solutions that resemble the black hole from afar but differ from it in the vicinity of the horizon. More precisely, we work in the context of the microstate geometries programme, which concerns fuzzballs that can be described as horizonless solutions in supergravity. We study the M2-M5-P black-hole, whose entropy at weak coupling comes from the fractionation of each M2-brane into strips connecting parallel M5-branes. The backreaction of such M2-strips is similar to a Callan-Maldacena spike, and for multiple M5- and M2-branes, one gets a complicated maze-like structure to which one can add momentum waves. Globally, this “super-maze” preserves four supercharges, but locally this number is enhanced to sixteen. Inspired by this result, we show that all known microstate geometries are based on “themelia”, which are brane configurations that exhibit this local supersymmetry enhancement. We explain why the fully back-reacted supergravity solutions corresponding to themelia should be smooth and horizonless, and then discuss recent progress in constructing the supergravity solutions corresponding to the super-maze. We show that the supergravity solutions for 1/4-BPS intersecting systems of M2- and M5-branes are completely characterized by a single function that satisfies a non-linear Monge-Ampère-like equation, and we demonstrate that given any M2-M5 1/4-BPS solution, the addition of momentum to arrive at an 1/8-BPS solution is governed by a linear system of equations. Finally, as a first step towards constructing explicit solutions, we look at a near-brane limit of certain single M2-M5 intersections, where the BPS equations linearize and one gets geometries of the form AdS3×S3×S3×Σ, with Σ a Riemann surface

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the work of policing, regulating and monitoring of New Zealand public censorship classifications. It follows the processes and agents involved in the day-to-day practices of the enforcement of the classifications given to objects by the Office of Film and Literature Classification. Responsibility for the enforcement of the classification decisions of the Office is delegated to private agents and agencies involved in supplying audiences with classified media products - cinemas, video stores, bookstores and libraries. The thesis also documents enforcement undertaken directly by public agents of the Censorship Compliance Unit. In this case enforcement is concerned with unclassified publications circulating on the Internet. The thesis argues that the networks of agents assembled for the practices of enforcement evolve as the forms of media evolve or change. The thesis focuses on the modes of interaction between agents, media and publics enacted in the different sites of the cinema, the bookstore, the video store, the library and the Internet. It documents the work of enforcement involved in the purchase of images for a fixed period of time in the fixed site of the cinema; the purchase of books from the fixed site of the bookstore; the hire of video films and video games from the fixed site of the video store; and the borrowing of books and videos from the fixed site of the public library. It contrasts the work of enforcement in these different sites with the development of new work practices involved in the interactive, fluid and seemingly intangible yet still policed site of the Internet. It documents how the responsibilities for, and the practices of, enforcement shift between public sites of enforcement to the increasingly difficult public monitoring of the private consumption of images distributed through the media of the Internet. It pays attention to how different methods and strategies of enforcement have been developed in response to both the classification and consumption of the expanding variety of mobile media and the proliferation and consumption of images in the unclassified and fluid world of the Internet.

Abstract:
This thesis critically interrogates the role of local context in the adoption and interpretation of video technology and gaming practices in the little studied locale of India. Video gaming is a recent phenomenon in India which has been rapidly increasing in popularity, yet it has gained little academic attention in digital gaming research. The project seeks to understand the emergence of practices of consumption of video games in India from the point of view of Indians themselves through the exploration of how Indian video gamers situate, interpret and negotiate the practice of video game play. In his book Video Gamers (2012), Gary Crawford makes a case for analysing game play as a practice, situated within everyday experiences and social networks. Crawford identifies two deficiencies in gaming studies: the dominance of a Western-centric viewpoint and the disregard for player context. This research addresses these shortcomings in two ways. First, through situating the field research in Chandigarh. Second, by employing a mixed methods qualitative approach - observations, interviews, focus groups, field notes, pictures and video recordings – to elicit the detail of the gamers' cultural context. Situating these practices within the broader social, historical, geographical and cultural milieu allows for the conceptualisation of contextual factors in terms of their influence on the adoption and interpretation of the global gaming practice in a local setting. These methods allow for the examination of, first, multiple culturally embedded factors and, second, the players' processes of sense making applied to video gaming. Each method makes the social world of the gamers visible in different ways. Fieldwork predominantly took place in video gaming parlours. Investigating game players in the space of the video gaming parlour enabled a more honed understanding of how the practice of video gaming was ‘glocalised’ within particular social, geographical and cultural contexts. A smaller second study was conducted in Manchester, to collect data in a setting that is culturally different from India. This contrasting data provided greater sensitivity to cultural factors in India which might have otherwise been overlooked or which had been obscured. The research draws theoretically upon Bourdieu’s theories of social field, habitus, and capital, combining these with Goffman’s notions of dramaturgy and framing, and Robertson’s concept of glocalisation. These concepts provided a theoretical framework that enabled a interrogation of the data to reveal the sociocultural processes embedded in the gaming parlours, and the individual’s creative engagements with video game products themselves. The methodological and theoretical framework, then, were complementary, offering both an experiential and contextual approach. This study found that video gamers interpret and make sense of the practice of video gaming through their contextual situation, and that they will both consciously and unconsciously attempt to glocalise the practice of video gaming so that it becomes culturally more acceptable.

Abstract:

This study investigates Chinese online users’ adoptions of various languages and other meaning making signs in their online literacy practices in two popular Chinese CMC sites, Weibo (micro-blogging) and bilibili.com (video-sharing). Adopting the theoretical framework of heteroglossia (Bakhtin, 1981), I explore how various meaning making resources are creatively and playfully utilized by Chinese users in their online communication. After two-month data collection, I sampled the non-standard literacy practices (e.g., foreign language transliteration) identified from micro-blogging postings and comments in Weibo, as well as spontaneous (known as “bullet curtain” comments) and traditional text-box comments from featured videos in bilibili.com. The findings resulted in 30,005 non-standard literacy practice types which contain meaning making features from languages (e.g., stylized Chinese Mandarin) and other meaning making signs (e.g., emojis) from both sites. The analysis suggests that Chinese online communication are noticeably hybrid with plurillingual and non-linguistic semiotic resources. These practices reflect the Bakhtinian notion of heteroglossic communication in which people stylize their language use with various meaning making resources. In addition, many practices are also “carnivalesque” (Bakhtin, 1984) which is characterized with creativity and playfulness. The study further deconstructs the notion of multilingualism and extends the discussion of how online communication opens up space for non-conventional and creative literacy practices, which potentially challenge the authoritative policies and voices.

Abstract:
Today, multimedia services have become accessible for private individuals thanks to ADSL technologies that uses existing phone lines to transmit data at high bit rates. However, video broadcasting over ADSL is only accessible to subscribers with good quality lines. We present an original system that optimizes the video quality over ADSL lines. The aim of the proposed system is to increase the reach of video broadcasting solutions over ADSL that already exists. The system is based on a joint source/channel optimization: source coding is based on a MPEG-2 scalable transcoding scheme using Data Partitioning that simply adapts the video bit rate depending on the subscriber quality line. The optimal bit rates are automatically chosen according to the line characteristics so that visual degradations of the video are minimized. In this goal, a new video quality metric that is very simple to implement is proposed to assess MPEG-2 sequences. On the channel coding side, a complete study of bi-resolution transmission schemes over DMT channel presents a comparison of two hierarchical transmission schemes: the Frequency Division Multiplexing schema and the Embedded MultiCarrier Modulation Scheme that uses hierarchical QAM to transmit bits of the two layers on the same sub carrier. This study leads to the proposal of two new bit and power loading algorithms for the two different transmission schemes. The final analysis of the system and experimental results highlight advantages of the suggested solution compared to a classical monoresolution transmission

Abstract:
AbstractThe use of audio-visual methods as a source of data for social inquiry has gained momentum, especially in research with migrant children and young people. For many youth scholars, photos and videos are used both as field notebooks and as working tools that can be employed during interviews or in creating personal diaries to unearth feelings and thoughts that otherwise would remain unexplored. However, producing, viewing and examining visual data together also creates the conditions to develop the collaborative potential that is inherent in the relationship between researchers and young participants. Building on a multi-sited ethnography with a group of Romanian Roma adolescents with different mobility experiences, this chapter offers a theoretically-informed empirical account of the failures, negotiations, and opportunities disclosed by the use of participatory video-making in ethnographic research with underprivileged young people “affected by mobility”.

AbstractAccording to Xu, Buhalis & Weber [1], gamification can enhance the on-site tourist experiences and be a marketing tool. However, the use of games in tourism development by DMOs is still an unexplored topic. The King’s Road in Finland combines the idea of gamified and storified live experiences with a video game. The development idea of a video game introduces King’s Road to a broader audience. The idea of a storified mobile game leads tourists on-site and rebuilds historical sites with augmented reality while leading tourists to less crowded attractions. This paper aims to provide new insights and increase understanding of gamification in tourism. To understand the innovation acceptance among Finnish DMOs, the gamified concept idea of King’s Road was presented to them. With the inductive approach, their feedback was analysed thematically. The findings highlight the obstacles and possibilities of the proposed gamification concept from the DMOs’ point of view. This paper aims to extend the previous research in innovation acceptance by identifying the level of acceptance regarding gamification in this case study and presenting solutions to advance it. Hence, this knowledge works as a basis for future research and development.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter examines the discourses found in Japanese gay vlog entries to see how such streaming contents are used as sites of contact between gays and straights in Japan. Early internet sites created safe public spaces for sexual minority members to meet and socialize where straights previously seldom had access or were expressly unwelcome. Using a collection of coming out and Q and A videos, the chapter will also explore the use of vlogging discourse for social change in Japan. More recently, sites like YouTube have created new contact spaces where straights are welcomed and can interact with gay content creators more directly. This chapter analyzes the ways in which Japanese gay men construct themselves as well as other gay and straight people around them in these videos. Utilizing membership categorization and indexicality the analysis will show how notions of family and gayness along with associated bound predicates are used to discursively resist heteronormativity. The discourse also shows how these videos focus on the purposes of informing and educating over phatic communication. The analysis will also demonstrate how the concept of internationalization has become semiotically relevant to the gay Japanese male category, constructing an image of masculine interculturality, contrasted against overly feminine mass-mediated stereotypes. Possibilities for further change and social justice in Japan through such sites of contact will also be discussed.

Abstract:
Construction industry has reported among the highest accident and fatality rates over the past decade. In particular, crane lifting is a notably hazardous operation on construction sites, causing fatal accidents like workers being struck by the boom or objects fallen from tower cranes. Manual monitoring by on-site safety officers is labour-intensive and error-prone, while incorporating computer vision techniques into surveillance cameras would enable more automatic and continuous monitoring of construction site operations. However, existing studies for lifting safety mainly detect the presence of individual objects (e.g. workers, crane components), while a methodology is needed to predict their potential collision more proactively before accidents happen. This paper develops a vision-based framework for predictive lifting safety monitoring, including three modules: (1) object detection and classification: targeting at hook and lifting materials to enable danger zone estimation, along with workers and their personal protective equipment; (2) worker movement tracking and prediction: analyzing the historical moving trajectory of each unique worker to foresee his/her future movement in certain period ahead; (3) multi-level safety assessment: issuing predictive warning in real-time upon any crane-worker conflict foreseen. The proposed framework is applicable to real-time site video processing and enables end-to-end lifting safety monitoring with instant alerting upon unsafe scenarios observed. Importantly, the proposed framework predicts the future movement of workers to proactively identify potential site hazard, in order to trigger earlier safety alert for more timely decision-making. With a large video dataset capturing tower crane operations, the proposed framework demonstrates competitive accuracy and computational efficiency in crane-worker conflict prediction, validating its practicality for real-time lifting safety monitoring

Abstract:
Existing web video systems recommend videos according to users' viewing history from its own website. However, since many users watch videos in multiple websites, this approach fails to capture these users' interests across sites. In this paper, we investigate the user viewing behavior in multiple sites based on a large scale real dataset. We find that user interests are comprised of cross-site consistent part and site-specific part with different degrees of the importance. Existing linear matrix factorization recommendation model has limitation in modeling such complicated interactions. Thus, we propose a model of Deep Attentive Probabilistic Factorization (DeepAPF) to exploit deep learning method to approximate such complex user-video interaction. DeepAPF captures both cross-site common interests and site-specific interests with non-uniform importance weights learned by the attentional network. Extensive experiments show that our proposed model outperforms by 17.62%, 7.9% and 8.1% with the comparison of three state-of-the-art baselines. Our study provides insight to integrate user viewing records from multiple sites via the trusted third party, which gains mutual benefits in video recommendation.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Video of an event recorded from a moving camera contains information not only useful for reconstructing the locations and timing of an event, but also the velocity of the camera attached to the moving object or vehicle. Determining the velocity of a video camera recording from a moving vehicle is useful for determining the vehicle’s velocity and can be compared with speeds calculated through other reconstruction methods, or to data from vehicle speed monitoring devices. After tracking the video, the positions and speeds of other objects within the video can also be determined. Video tracking analysis traditionally has required a site inspection to map the three-dimensional environment. In instances where there have been significant site changes, where there is limited or no site access, and where budgeting and timing constraints exist, a three-dimensional environment can be created using publicly available aerial imagery and aerial LiDAR. This paper presents a methodology for creating a three-dimensional environment and performing video tracking analysis without a site visit. To validate the methodology, a blind study was conducted where three different videos were tracked. Each video presented a different traffic scenario including oncoming traffic, cross traffic, and passing traffic. The speed of the vehicle from which the video was recorded was determined through the video tracking process, and speed was also determined for a second vehicle visible within the videos. The speed of both vehicles in each video was then compared to vehicle speeds measured with vehicle instrumentation using Harry’s LapTimer to evaluate the accuracy of vehicle speeds determined through video and object tracking.</div></div>

Abstract:
Monitoring and analysis of wildlife are key to conservation planning and conflict management. The widespread use of camera traps coupled with AI-based analysis tools serves as an excellent example of successful and non-invasive use of technology for design, planning, and evaluation of conservation policies. As opposed to the typical use of camera traps that capture still images or short videos, in this project, we propose to analyze longer term videos monitoring a large flock of birds. This project, which is part of the NSF-TIH Indo-US joint R&D partnership, focuses on solving challenges associated with the analysis of long-term videos captured at feeding grounds and nesting sites, among other such locations that host large flocks of migratory birds. We foresee that the objectives of this project would lead to datasets and benchmarking tools as well as novel algorithms that would be instrumental in developing automated video analysis tools that could in turn help understand individual and social behavior of birds. The first of the key outcomes of this research will include the curation of challenging, real-world datasets for benchmarking various image and video analytics algorithms for tasks such as counting, detection, segmentation, and tracking. Our recent efforts towards this outcome is a curated dataset of 812 high-resolution, point-annotated, images (4K - 32MP) of a flock of Demoiselle cranes (Anthropoides virgo) taken from their feeding site at Khichan, Rajasthan, India. The average number of birds in each image is about 207, with a maximum count of 1500. The benchmark experiments show that state-of-the-art vision techniques struggle with tasks such as segmentation, detection, localization, and density estimation for the proposed dataset. Over the execution of this open science research, we will be scaling this dataset for segmentation and tracking in videos, as well as developing novel techniques for video analytics for wildlife monitoring.

Abstract:
Abstract The present paper describes how an artificial intelligence-based video analytics system was implemented to improve workplace safety in a construction site in the Middle East. The system can detect and notify potential HSE violations and provide insights and statistics to support HSE management. The system uses high-resolution cameras that stream videos and images to a local server where the video analytics software is installed. The software uses an AI algorithm that can learn to identify unsafe acts and conditions by analyzing the video data and receiving feedback from the HSE operators. The system also sends real-time notifications to the HSE operators via mobile devices. VAWS detects various types of HSE violations, such as PPE noncompliance, work at height, proximity to heavy machinery, and poor housekeeping. The system's reliability, measured by the ratio of confirmed events to total events, increased from 8% to 30% in six months (from November ’23 to April ’24). The system also learned to reduce false positives by receiving specific comments and images from the VAWS analysis team. Thanks also to this solution is possible to identify the riskiest areas and riskiest activities thus allowing site management to provide feedback and specific training to the workers. The implementation of the system faces challenges such as selecting the appropriate type and position of the cameras, complying with explosive zone requirements where necessary, ensuring the network bandwidth and storage capacity, avoiding glare, shadows, and obstructions. The system also requires human validation and intervention, respecting the privacy and ethical rights of the workers, and managing the cyber security risks of the AI system. Based on available results and further planned developments it can be concluded that VAWS is expected to improve the quality and quantity of HSE supervision at large and remote construction sites, especially for routine tasks, night shifts, and less monitored areas.

Abstract:
In addition to content from accounts the user follows, TikTok frequently emphasizes content with similar subject matter to videos the user has previously liked. As long as a user has indicated an interest in the topic (most likely by engaging with a related video), they may see a TikTok about it despite not following anyone who has ever interacted with it. Consequently, political networks and communities do not always emerge around prominent figures like politicians or professional content creators, but rather manifest as ephemeral trending topics. Our methodological approach to studying engagement with politics on TikTok therefore uses topic modeling to identify how and when TikTok users respond to news coverage about prominent current events. Specifically, we examine a large dataset of news articles, TikTok videos, and TikTok comments to uncover how TikTok discussion of the Russian-Ukrainian war temporally differs from coverage in mainstream news outlets. By examining points in time where the proportion of TikTok content about a specific topic within the war mirrors its discussion in the news – and more importantly, where it diverges – we are able to see how TikTok users include news events in their engagement with political issues. We find that the majority of TikTok videos about the Russian-Ukrainian war rarely feature prominent news stories, but rather focus on the users’ personal experiences and perspectives. However, TikTok comments are more strongly engaged with specific events and ‘hot-button’ issues related to the war. The application of our methodology allows us to observe how major news events inform the creation and discussion of content on TikTok, the discrepancy between video descriptions/hashtags and video subject matter, and the importance of the comment section as a site for political conversation.

Abstract:
Abstract This article describes a National Science Foundation sponsored project to promote technological education with a focus on composites manufacturing. This project has four components: (1)the promotion of careers in Technology to students in grades 7–11; (2) summer camps for students grades 7–11; (3) short courses for high school teachers; (4) developing new courses at the undergraduate level. For each component of the project, a rationale, detailed content, delivery methods, and assessment methods will be discussed. Experience indicates a need to reach secondary school students to make them aware of careers in Technology and related educational opportunities at two-year and four-year institutions and to present a positive and attractive image of the field. Our efforts are directed towards students in grades 7–11. To reach a maximum of students in a large geographic area using several approaches: 1. Presentations using distance learning facilities that allow interactive audio/video presentations at different sites. Faculty members on campus can communicate with six or more sites simultaneously and present computer-based materials, videos, and conduct live demonstrations. 2. School visits. Many schools do not have access to site for interactive video presentations. 3. A web site developed for the project contains regularly updated information about the project, information about composite materials, and the field of technology. Interested parties can register for various programs by filling out the appropriate forms on the web. 4. Special events such as National Engineers Week and Open House Days are used to establish personal contacts. This paper describes how the presentations are delivered, their contents, and how effective they are in promoting a positive image of technology. Another important component of this project is that each institution offers summer camps for students in grades 7–11 and short courses for high school teachers. Each of these activities concentrate on one specific technical area and offer both a general view of that area and how it can lead to rewarding careers in industry, and direct hands-on experiences.

Abstract:
Integration of ICT significantly increases the possibilities of the educational process and extends the boundaries of the educational sphere as a whole. Publicly available resources, such as e-mail, blogs, forums, online applications, video hosting sites, can serve as the basis for building open learning and education. Informational educational technologies of learning foreign languages are in the focus of this study. The article represents the results of theoretical analysis of content on the subject of its personal- and didactic-definite orientation, as well as some aspects of the practical use of commonly used YouTube video materials in the process of teaching German as the first or second foreign language in higher education, namely at the pedagogical university. Taking into account the practical experience of using the materials of several relevant thematic YouTube channels with a fairly wide constant audience, a concise didactic analysis of their product is presented and recommendations on converting video content into methodological material in the framework of practical course of German language by future teachers are offered. Due to the suggested recommendations, the following tasks can be solved: enrichment of the vocabulary; semantization of phraseological units, constant figures of speech, cliché; development of pronunciation skills; expansion of linguistic competence; improving listening and speaking skills; increasing motivation to learn, etc.

Abstract:
In 1993, Neville Exler filmed on his Sony Handicam, the three Connell brothers on site at their market garden on Rosebank Road. This film was made just as these men, the last farmers on Rosebank Road were negotiating the sale of their farmland for development, and so ending the last chapter of Rosebank Road as the fruit and vegetable basket of Auckland. In 2012 this video was given to our research collective to convert to digital format.

Sprague, Joshua, David Kushner, James Grunden, Jamie McClain, Benjamin Grime, and Cullen Molitor. Channel Islands National Park Kelp Forest Monitoring Program: Annual report 2014. National Park Service, August 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2293855.

Full text
Abstract:
Channel Islands National Park (CHIS) has conducted long-term ecological monitoring of the kelp forests around San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Anacapa and Santa Barbara Islands since 1982. The original permanent transects were established at 16 sites between 1981 and 1986 with the first sampling beginning in 1982, this being the 33rd year of monitoring. An additional site, Miracle Mile, was established at San Miguel Island in 2001 by a commercial fisherman with assistance from the park. Miracle Mile was partially monitored from 2002 to 2004, and then fully monitored (using all KFM protocols) since 2005. In 2005, 16 additional permanent sites were established to collect baseline data from inside and adjacent to four marine reserves that were established in 2003. Sampling results from all 33 sites mentioned above are included in this report. Funding for the Kelp Forest Monitoring Program (KFM) in 2014 was provided by the National Park Service (NPS). The 2014 monitoring efforts utilized 49 days of vessel time to conduct 1,040 dives for a total of 1,059 hours of bottom time. Population dynamics of a select list of 71 “indicator species” (consisting of taxa or categories of algae, fish, and invertebrates) were measured at the 33 permanent sites. In addition, population dynamics were measured for all additional species of fish observed at the sites during the roving diver fish count. Survey techniques follow the CHIS Kelp Forest Monitoring Protocol Handbook (Davis et al. 1997) and an update to the sampling protocol handbook currently being developed (Kushner and Sprague, in progress). The techniques utilize SCUBA and surface-supplied-air to conduct the following monitoring protocols: 1 m2 quadrats, 5 m2 quadrats, band transects, random point contacts, fish transects, roving diver fish counts, video transects, size frequency measurements, and artificial recruitment modules. Hourly temperature data were collected using remote temperature loggers at 32 sites, the exception being Miracle Mile where there is no temperature logger installed. This annual report contains a brief description of each site including any notable observations or anomalies, a summary of methods used, and monitoring results for 2014. All the data collected during 2014 can be found in the appendices and in an Excel workbook on the NPS Integrated Resource Management Applications (IRMA) portal. In the 2013 annual report (Sprague et al. 2020) several changes were made to the appendices. Previously, annual report density and percent cover data tables only included the current year’s data. Now, density and percent cover data are presented in graphical format and include all years of available monitoring data. Roving diver fish count (RDFC), fish size frequency, natural habitat size frequency, and Artificial Recruitment Module (ARM) size frequency data are now stored on IRMA at https://irma.nps.gov/DataStore/Reference/Profile/2259651. The temperature data graphs in Appendix L include the same graphs that were used in past reports, but include additional violin plot sections that compare monthly means from the current year to past years. In addition to the changes listed above, the layout of the discussion section was reordered by species instead of by site. The status of kelp forests differed among the five park islands. This is a result of a combination of factors including but not limited to, oceanography, biogeography and associated differences in species abundance and composition, as well as sport and commercial fishing pressure. All 33 permanent sites were established in areas that had or were historically known to have had kelp forests in the past. In 2014, 15 of the 33 sites monitored were characterized as developing kelp forest, kelp forest or mature kelp forest. In addition, three sites were in a state of transition. Two sites were part kelp forest and part dominated by Strongylocentrotus purpuratus...

Abstract:
We provide an updated presentation of the spectacular erosion forms at French River Ontario (Kor et al. 1991) based on new methods of data collection and wider observations. This work includes ~ 10 more detailed study sites, documentation of the range of forms over a larger area, the use of extensive drone image capture and ground surveys, as well as a detailed inventory of forms. Key sites are illustrated using video images. The update extends the conclusions of the Kor paper regarding the significance and scale of subglacial meltwater erosion with some novel findings. We document the importance of plucking (including hydraulic plucking) and, the control of structure on s-forms, which were not highlighted in the Kor study. Apparent cavitation erosion forms are prominent across the study area and provide support for inferred high-velocity meltwater flow. A growing interpretative framework includes discussion of evidence to test a theorized hydraulic sequence of sheet-channel-distributed flow, followed by re-grounding of glacial ice as meltwater flow waned. This hydraulic sequence may also be complementary to observations in thick sediment terrain down flow.

Bates, C. Richards, Melanie Chocholek, Clive Fox, John Howe, and Neil Jones. Scottish Inshore Fisheries Integrated Data System (SIFIDS): Work package (3) final report development of a novel, automated mechanism for the collection of scallop stock data. Edited by Mark James and Hannah Ladd-Jones. Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland (MASTS), 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.15664/10023.23449.

Abstract:
[Extract from Executive Summary] This project, aimed at the development of a novel, automated mechanism for the collection of scallop stock data was a sub-part of the Scottish Inshore Fisheries Integrated Data Systems (SIFIDS) project. The project reviewed the state-of-the-art remote sensing (geophysical and camera-based) technologies available from industry and compared these to inexpensive, off-the -shelf equipment. Sea trials were conducted on scallop dredge sites and also hand-dived scallop sites. Data was analysed manually, and tests conducted with automated processing methods. It was concluded that geophysical acoustic technologies cannot presently detect individual scallop but the remote sensing technologies can be used for broad scale habitat mapping of scallop harvest areas. Further, the techniques allow for monitoring these areas in terms of scallop dredging impact. Camera (video and still) imagery is effective for scallop count and provide data that compares favourably with diver-based ground truth information for recording scallop density. Deployment of cameras is possible through inexpensive drop-down camera frames which it is recommended be deployed on a wide area basis for further trials. In addition, implementation of a ‘citizen science’ approach to wide area recording is suggested to increase the stock assessment across the widest possible variety of seafloor types around Scotland. Armed with such data a full, statistical analysis could be completed and data used with automated processing routines for future long-term monitoring of stock.

Abstract:
This paper presents an analysis of the possibilities and advantages of augmented reality technologies and their implementation in training of future Chemistry and Biology teachers. The study revealed that the use of augmented reality technologies in education creates a number of advantages, such as: visualization of educational material; interesting and attractive learning process; increasing student motivation to study and others. Several augmented reality applications were analyzed. The Blippar app has been determined to have great benefits: it’s free; the interface is simple and user-friendly; the possibility of using different file types; the possibility of combining a large amount of information and logically structuring it; loading different types of information: video, images, 3D models, links to sites, etc. Thus, convenient interactive projects were developed using the Blippar application, which were called study guide with AR elements, and implemented in teaching chemical disciplines such as Laboratory Chemical Practice and Organic Chemistry. Using such study guide with AR elements during classes in a real chemical laboratory is safe and does not require expensive glassware. The student interviews revealed that the use of the Blippar application facilitated new material understanding, saved time needed to learn material, and was an effective addition to real-life learning.

Pavlovic, Noel, Barbara Plampin, Gayle Tonkovich, and David Hamilla. Special flora and vegetation of Indiana Dunes National Park. National Park Service, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2302417.

Full text
Abstract:
The Indiana Dunes (comprised of 15 geographic units (see Figure 1) which include Indiana Dunes National Park, Dunes State Park, and adjacent Shirley Heinze Land Trust properties) are remarkable in the Midwest and Great Lakes region for the vascular plant diversity, with an astounding 1,212 native plant species in an area of approximately 16,000 acres! This high plant diversity is the result of the interactions among postglacial migrations, the variety of soil substrates, moisture conditions, topography, successional gradients, ?re regimes, proximity to Lake Michigan, and light levels. This richness is all the more signi?cant given the past human alterations of the landscape resulting from logging; conversion to agriculture; construction of transportation corridors, industrial sites, and residential communities; ?re suppression; land abandonment; and exotic species invasions. Despite these impacts, multiple natural areas supporting native vegetation persist. Thus, each of the 15 units of the Indiana Dunes presents up to eight subunits varying in human disturbance and consequently in ?oristic richness. Of the most signi?cant units of the park in terms of number of native species, Cowles Dunes and the Dunes State Park stand out from all the other units, with 786 and 686 native species, respectively. The next highest ranked units for numbers of native species include Keiser (630), Furnessville (574), Miller Woods (551), and Hoosier Prairie (542). The unit with lowest plant richness is Heron Rookery (220), with increasing richness in progression from Calumet Prairie (320), Hobart Prairie Grove (368), to Pinhook Bog (380). Signi?cant natural areas, retaining native vegetation composition and structure, include Cowles Bog (Cowles Dunes Unit), Howes Prairie (Cowles Dunes), Dunes Nature Preserve (Dunes State Park), Dunes Prairie Nature Preserve (Dunes State Park), Pinhook Bog, Furnessville Woods (Furnessville), Miller Woods, Inland Marsh, and Mnoke Prairie (Bailly). Wilhelm (1990) recorded a total of 1,131 native plant species for the ?ora of the Indiana Dunes. This was similar to the 1,132 species recorded by the National Park Service (2014) for the Indiana Dunes. Based on the nomenclature of Swink and Wilhelm (1994), Indiana Dunes National Park has 1,206 native plant species. If we include native varieties and hybrids, the total increases to 1,244 taxa. Based on the nomenclature used for this report?the Flora of North America (FNA 2022), and the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS 2022)?Indiana Dunes National Park houses 1,206 native vascular plant species. As of this writing (2020), the Indiana Dunes is home to 37% of the species of conservation concern in Indiana (241 out of 624 Indiana-listed species): state extirpated = 10 species, state endangered = 75, and state threatened = 100. Thus, 4% of the state-listed species in the Indiana Dunes are extirpated, 31% endangered, and 41% threatened. Watch list and rare categories have been eliminated. Twenty-nine species once documented from the Indiana Dunes may be extirpated because they have not been seen since 2001. Eleven have not been seen since 1930 and 15 since 1978. If we exclude these species, then there would be a total of 1,183 species native to the Indiana Dunes. Many of these are cryptic in their life history or diminutive, and thus are di?cult to ?nd. Looking at the growth form of native plants, <1% (nine species) are clubmosses, 3% (37) are ferns, 8% (297) are grasses and sedges, 56% (682) are forbs or herbs, 1% (16) are herbaceous vines, <1% (7) are subshrubs (woody plants of herbaceous stature), 5% (60) are shrubs, 1% (11) are lianas (woody vines), and 8% (93) are trees. Of the 332 exotic species (species introduced from outside North America), 65% (219 species) are forbs such as garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata), 15% (50 species) are graminoids such as phragmites (Phragmites australis ssp. australis), 2% (seven species) are vines such as ?eld bindweed (Convulvulus arvensis), <1% (two species) are subshrubs such as Japanese pachysandra (Pachysandra terminalis), 8% (28 species) are shrubs such as Asian bush honeysuckle (Lonicera spp.), 1% (three species) are lianas such as oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus), and 8% (23 species) are trees such as tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissimus). Of the 85 adventive species, native species that have invaded from elsewhere in North America, 14% (11 species) are graminoids such as broom sedge (Andropogon virginicus), 57% (48 species) are forbs such as fall phlox (Phlox paniculata), 5% (six species) are shrubs such as Carolina allspice (Calycanthus floridus), 3% (two species) are subshrubs such as holly leaved barberry (Berberis repens), 1% (one species) is a liana (trumpet creeper (Campsis radicans), 3% two species) are herbaceous vines such as tall morning glory (Ipomoea purpurea), and 17% (15 species) are trees such as American holly (Ilex opaca). A total of 436 species were found to be ?special? based on political rankings (federal and state-listed threatened and endangered species), species with charismatic ?owers, and those that are locally rare.
